WELCOME TO SPL We were delighted to learn in February that St. Pete Beach was recognized as the 2020 Traveler’s Choice “Best Beach in America” on TripAdvisor. This confirms something we’ve known all along — we live with paradise in our backyard. The announcement was especially meaningful since SPL decided to expand our circulation to include St. Pete Beach starting with this issue. You’ll be seeing more coverage of the beaches as we move forward, such as our feature on the striking multi-million dollar renovations just completed at The Don Cesar and a review of the updated Maritana restaurant. With Spring officially here, many homeowners turn attention to their yards and gardens before the oppressive heat of summer drives us indoors. We asked some experts in landscaping and design for tips on how to create and maintain our properties now, and consulted furnishings professionals on trends for indoor/outdoor living. We even found a local milkweed expert to help us get into butterfly gardening specifically for Monarchs. Who doesn’t want more color in their lives? This year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Dali Museum in its world-class building on the St. Pete waterfront. Arts writer Cindy Stovall takes a look at how the museum has broken boundaries in its exhibits and what the future holds. Can you believe it’s been one year since the COVID19 pandemic swept the nation and the world? It’s turned our lives upside down and caused hardship and loss for many. It’s also brought out the best in many who have shown compassion and kindness to other individuals. We wondered what lessons our healthcare and community service professionals have learned at this one-year mark. You will be touched to read their reflections, which are strikingly similar. Take a look at “What I Learned.”

Specializing in Clinical Research and Surgical Oncology
Dr. Jinny Gunn was born and raised in Florida, and family has always been an important and influential part of her life. Following in her Grandfather’s footsteps, Dr. Gunn served in the U.S. Navy, then went on to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego. She then returned to Florida where she received her medical degree from Florida International University in Miami, and completed her general surgery residency at May Clinic Florida in Jacksonville. At the Mayo Clinic, her last year of training was primarily focused on surgical oncology and breast disease. After watching her Aunt fight a long and strenuous battle with breast cancer, Dr. Gunn knew she wanted to specialize in breast care throughout her career, in order to help other women in similar positions. She says that one of the things that sets her apart from others in the field is that she is a female, and can relate to her patients on an entirely different level than her male colleagues. From the time a patient walks into a consultation with Dr. Gunn, they feel at ease, despite what they may be going through. Patients are provided with a guidebook, that has been crafted specifically for them, which directs patients to local resources for wigs, curated massages, and how to talk to their families about cancer.

SPL LIVING
A Home For Your Boat!
Living the easygoing Florida lifestyle has never been in more demand, especially since the world’s lifestyles changed in March of last year due to Covid. Everyone from all over the world decided it was time for a change which created enormous demands for open concept floor plans and outdoor living that this stunning single story home offers. Live on island time year round! You are greeted by open water views of Boca Ciega Bay the moment you enter this completely remodeled stunning residence. The owners of this home, Mike and Leann, are boaters and also needed a home to accommodate their 6O foot vessel, therefore location as well as the view was most important. Instead of looking for the perfect home, the owners had the vision to take the original home down to the studs and create this fabulous open floor plan, ideal for entertaining. They reengineered areas to increase the ceiling height making the home live larger than its size and combined organic elements such as leather finished granite and bamboo flooring to compliment the coastal vibe. Attention to detail, master craftsmanship and designer finishes are found throughout this boaters paradise located on St. Pete Beach! This home is listed by Tammy Campbell McNelis and the CPM Team with ReMax Metro for $1,350,000. For more information contact Tammy at 727-455-2351.

With an extensive renovation now complete, the grand Don Cesar brings a whole new attitude – and a few surprises – to the guest experience. BY MARCIA BIGGS
While Paris has the Eiffel Tower and London has Big Ben, the Gulf Coast of Florida has its own iconic landmark – The Pink Palace® also known as The Don CeSar. Most locals can recount a visit of some kind – or possibly many visits. Over the decades, “The Don” as we like to call it, has been the scene of countless weddings, engagements, graduations, anniversary and birthday soirees, girlfriend getaways, romantic liaisons, and just about any special occasion one could muster up. Marking its 93rd anniversary, The Don CeSar officially unveiled its highly anticipated, multi-million-dollar renovation in late January. Three years in the making, the makeover has touched nearly every aspect of the resort from the historic Lobby Bar to the guest rooms, restaurants, shops, and everywhere in between. The concept has resulted in a remarkably tasteful mix of coastal and modern, while maintaining elements of classic 1920s design in keeping with the hotel’s history and status on the National Register of Historic Places.

March/April 2021
The transformative redesign of the Pink Palace® began in 2018, when Florida-based design studio, Edge of Architecture, brought a fresh look to meeting spaces, guest corridors and The Don’s palatial exteriors, including a complete restoration of the iconic, palm tree lined front drive. In 2019, The Don partnered with Boston-based Parker-Torres Design to transform the retail shops, The Lobby Bar and fine dining restaurant Maritana. More recently, the final phase showcases the clean, fresh redesign of the 277 rooms and suites. The newly appointed guestrooms incorporate a beach-inspired aesthetic using elements such as wicker, whitewashed headboards and airy, blush tones reflective of the hotel facade’s signature pink. One of the biggest surprises, though, has to be the former Sea Oats casual poolside/beachfront restaurant which has had a complete makeover into Social Table. This light, airy dining room has gone chic, with the addition of several private dining rooms including a

The adjacent Rowe Bar takes advantage of beachfront views, with an indoor nautical-theme bistro/bar and outdoor patio beneath a sailtop shade. Kudos go to the addition of comfy couches and outdoor gas firepits, making this hands-down one of the best sunset
viewing spots on the beach. Finally, the new Beacon Pool Bar & Lookout offers poolside bites, an extensive selection of beach-inspired cocktails and a rooftop lounge boasting unmatched views of the Gulf of Mexico. Now who needs a special event to visit the Don Cesar? Continued on next page

SPL SPOTLIGHT PHOTO/MARCIA BIGGS
A Quick History of the Pink Palace Opened in the heyday of the Gatsby Era in 1928 by real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe, The Don attracted some of the most famous and notorious figures of the day. Upon Rowe’s sudden death in 1940 of a heart attack in the lobby (his ghost is still said to haunt the halls), the U.S. Army purchased the hotel in 1942 to be used as a war hospital, and later a convalescent center for airmen returning from World War II. It later became a VA Headquarters, gradually falling into disrepair until it was vacated in 1969. In 1971, threatened by the wrecking ball, a group of concerned citizens formed the Save the Don Committee, vowing to help restore and preserve the once-grand hotel. A new owner, William Bowman, soon began a $3.5 million restoration project and the resort reopened in 1973. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places and soon attracted Hollywood stars and filmmakers. Spa Oceana was added in 2008, along with more than 30,000 square feet of event space in 2009. In 2015, the Don was awarded Best Historic Hotel by Historic Hotels of America. The resort is currently owned by Host Hotels & Resorts and managed by Davidson Resorts.

Updated Maritana at the Don CeSar Still a
Magical Experience BY MARCIA BIGGS
Like proud parents showing off a beautiful new babe, the legendary Don CeSar is touting tastefully refreshed dining experiences sure to make guests coo with delight. The new additions show off a completely renovated Maritana restaurant (dropping the Grille from its name), the conversion of the former Sea Porch into a more sophisticated Social Table, and a new nautical theme Rowe Bar, complete with seating poolside and covered deck dining with a view of the Gulf. For decades, Maritana Grille has been listed in countless “Best of …” reviews, a noted AAA 4 Diamond Dining experience. Indeed, the restaurant maintains its prestigious reputation, not so much for its curated menu by Executive Chef Emily Ferrari, but for outstanding service, an extensive wine list, and an elegant ambiance one does not soon forget. The Maritana facelift removed the aquariums lining one wall and the dark carpet to opt for a clean, white interior from tile floors and palatial round columns to furnishings. Accent colors of royal blue and gold with subdued lighting lend to an air of elegance, with spaced banquettes along the side walls perfect for intimate dining. (Tables are appropriately spaced, too.) Our hospitable waiter was knowledgeable in all aspects of the menu, helping us select just the right wine and even allowing us tastings before we ordered single glasses. The menu is limited with four Small Plates and four Sharable Plates which are tapas-size appetizers including Beef Tartare, Foie Gras, Broiled Oysters with black truffle butter sauce, and Grilled Octopus. We opted for a main entrée – the Forest Mushrooms and Polenta – which came in a bowl and was easily an appetizer for two. A bisque and three salads round out the sides. Seafood comprises four of the eight main entrée selections – a Poached Main Lobster, Black Bass, Grilled Corvina and Turbot. Each comes with a hand-crafted sauce or seasonal accompaniment. I ordered the Corvina, a square of mild whitefish atop a light yellow curry sauce served with black rice. It was light and perfectly seasoned. The other four entrees include an oxtail ravioli, ordered by my guest, delicate hand-made pasta squares swimming in a tasty mushroom sauce. Rounding out the mains are Filet Mignon, artfully accompanied by quail egg, mushroom and a drizzle of port glaze, and Duck Breast with turnip, quince, chestnut and farro. We arrived an hour early, to take advantage of the Rowe Bar’s outdoor deck for a craft cocktail and a view of the sunset, which always seems dreamy from the Don. Even though we were there on a weekday, dining at the Maritana remains, as always, a special evening.

A Decade of Dali Since opening in a stunning new home 10 years ago, the Dali Museum has gained worldwide recognition for groundbreaking exhibits. Is anyone really surprised?

Cutting the ribbon at the 2011 opening of the new building was museum director Hank Hine, left, Infanta Cristina of Spain, and Tom James, former President of The Dalí Museum Board of Trustees.
BY CINDY STOVALL In the “time flies” category does it even seem possible that one of the most iconic structures on downtown St. Pete’s picturesque waterfront is already 10 years old? You know, the one that houses one of, if not the largest collection of Salvador Dalí works, drawings, sculptures, writings and photos on the planet (2,400 pieces in total).
of this collection of multi-sensory, surreal and iconic masterpieces can only be categorized as transformative. And in that vein – in the spirit of Dalí’s envelope-pushing techniques and imagery, many fascinating exhibits featuring other notable Dalí contemporaries have graced the adjoining gallery space with an ever-increasing integration of technology.
It seems like only yesterday that, in preparation for this transformative project, executive director Hank Hine and worldrenowned architect Yann Weymouth of HOK (and Louvre Pyramid fame), traveled to Spain together to surround themselves in all things Dalí – the people and places that were important to the artist and, of course, to visit the original hometown museum devoted to his work.
“It greatly enhances the overall experience for the visitor and improves our ability to offer uniquely imagined programming,” says curator of education Peter Tush. This tech-forward philosophy is dramatically reflected in the current Van Gogh Alive exhibit, and will continue to be a high priority as expansion is being planned.
But beyond inspiration for aesthetic impact, Weymouth was also tasked with the engineering directive to develop a state-of-the-art design that better protected the collection from hurricane force winds and other environmental considerations. The vision realized in brick and mortar reality 10 years ago has arguably become the most recognizable building in the Tampa Bay area. You would not be wrong to see it as a work of art on its own – and Architectural Digest would agree with you. They placed the Dalí Museum on the Top 10 list of interesting museum structures in the world.
They certainly have the right person in Yann Weymouth to be involved in such forward-thinking endeavors. “After over 50 years, it is still a thrill to learn about new advancements in design, science and technology,” he says. “Dalí was fascinated by these things as well. What I can tell you, is the barrel isn’t empty yet. “Seriously though, we MUST solve the carbon problem. It is essential to consider such things as structural resilience,
The sloping, twisting, bubble of geodesic glass and steel known as “The Enigma” envelopes and bursts from a cube of natural yet industrial concrete with protective 18-inch-thick walls. No building I can think of so perfectly captures the philosophical and surreal leanings of its namesake and his work – all while simultaneously meeting vital practical considerations with cutting edge design. A Memorable Decade Millions of visitors have come to this fantastical place to see this collection of Salvador Dalí works, which includes eight of his acclaimed masterworks, donated by his personal friends Eleanor and A. Reynolds Morse some 40 years ago. The continuing impact

sustainability and energy consciousness in modern design. Things like LED lighting and solar roofs will help address these concerns. Also, the ability to create aesthetic elements not previously possible – virtual staging elements that don’t include actual paintings, audio advancements, moveable walls, floors and ceilings — these all figure prominently in tech-forward building design and will be a part of any expansion,” says Weymouth.
that have walked through our doors over the past 10 years is an incredible feat as we strive to serve as an active resource in both our community and the world at large.
Milestones like this are a gauge for just how quickly a decade flies by. I had the opportunity to interview Dalí Museum Executive Director Hank Hine to talk about his vision for the future.
What is your vision for the role of technology in presenting fine art? It is our belief that technology can enhance an art experience. This can be seen in our other digital experiences available at The Dalí. For example, our Masterworks in Augmented Reality experience available on The Dalí Museum app helps visitors uncover the meaning behind Dalí’s larges canvases; and our Dalí Lives experiences allows visitors to hear from a reimagined Dalí, who shares his inspirations using authentic historic quotes.
What would you consider the most impactful accomplishment of the decade in the new location? First and foremost, the biggest impact of our current location is the building’s ability to protect our unparalleled collection of Salvador Dalí works and therefore preserving Dalí’s legacy for years to come. Dali Museum Greatest Hits Some exhibition highlights of the past decade: Midnight in Paris: Surrealism at the Crossroads, 1929 – This exhibit, a coveted collaboration with Centre Pompidou in Paris, was unceremoniously cut short by Covid-19, but it certainly made a splash while it ran. The collection of photos, paintings and virtually immersive features examined the works, friendships and clashes of Dalí, André Breton, Luis Buñuel, Alexander Calder, René Magritte and others. Of note: The short film written by local actress Roxanne Fey in which she starred as Gala verbally fencing with Breton played by Ned Averill Snell. Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dali’s Spain – Florida’s own modernday Ansel Adams, the renowned nature photographer, was commissioned to go to Spain to explore and visually document Dalí’s homeland. He brought back some truly magical images.

Dalí & Schiaparelli – Another cross-Atlantic collaboration with Schiaparelli Paris, this exhibition featured haute couture gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings, objects and photos, as well as new designs by Bertrand Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. Frida Kahlo at The Dalí - This exhibit was an intriguing exploration of the life of Kahlo, her striking artwork and her fascinating psyche. Together with the exclusive photographs of family, friends and lovers, the exhibition gave a complete view of Kahlo’s world, along with the joys, passions and obsessions of this remarkable artist.
ARTS & CULTURE experience art in a new way, while further educating our audience about art and artists. Please name your top 3 favorite exhibits during the decade and why. Dalí/Duchamp. This exhibition joined two artists considered as opposites, Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp, and showed that they both wanted to fuse art and life seamlessly. Disney and Dalí: Architects of the Imagination. Here we brought two of the great imaginations of our time together and also created a new work that carried their passion for technology. Dalí’s Sacred Science: Religion & Mysticism showed how Dalí used extended series of works to dive deeply into the connections of the material and the spiritual. What do you want visitors to come away with after a visit? We hope to provide our visitors with a unique arts destination that grants moments of powerful inspiration. We want visitors to walk away with a new perspective – delivered through Dalí’s exceptional skill – to make one feel as though a world of infinite possibilities has been revealed.
Tell us one thing that people would be surprised to know. Dalí positioned a mirror in his bedroom so that the first rays of the sun would touch his face in bed as he slept. What are some of your hopes and plans for the coming decade? We recognize that the way visitors want to consume art continues to evolve, as does the advancement of technology in museums, which pushes us to continually explore new, engaging experiences. We’re committed to staying at the forefront of technology, embracing new methods to engage guests in unconventional ways and our vision is to create a revolutionary space inviting the world to innovative digital art experiences. *** At a media event on January 11 celebrating the museum’s 10th anniversary, Hank Hine summed it up nicely, quoting advertising executive John Gossage: “Changing the world is the only worthy pursuit of serious people.” Hine and the Dalí staff embody that point of view each and every day. What is your favorite piece in the permanent collection? Why? Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at 20 Meters becomes a Portrait of Abraham Lincoln. The painting requires two kinds of sight, two ways of looking: up close and from a distance. When you look up closely you see Gala, when you look from far away you see Lincoln. The painting is beautiful and skillful, and it is also a metaphor about life and living – there is always more than one way of seeing something. And we must be flexible in the way we approach life. Who are some of the most famous Dalí visitors over the last decade? Alice Cooper, Bill Murray, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Tony Bennett, Katie Couric, George Takei, Jeremy Irons, Susan Sarandon, Penn & Teller, Dick Cheney, TJ Miller, Patch Adams and Ferran Adria, to name a few.
Disney & Dalí – Presented through a multimedia wonderland of original paintings, story sketches, conceptual artwork, objects, correspondences, archival film, photographs, and audio, this comprehensive exhibition showcased two vastly different icons who were drawn to each other through their unique personalities, their enduring friendship, and their collaboration on the animated short Destino. Dreams of Dalí in Virtual Reality - An early foray into the remarkable marriage of art and technology, featuring a study of Dali’s painting Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus,” visitors were immersed in the world of the Surrealist master like never before - venturing into the towers, peering from them to distant lands and discovering surprises around

every corner. “Visual Magic: Dalí’s Masterworks in Augmented Reality” - Viewing each Masterwork through The Dalí Museum app on a mobile device, visitors could see the paintings come to life, highlighting and exploring their individual complexities.

Collins was handed the task of organizing what came to be the immensely successful Shine Mural Festival, which after six years has brought national and even global recognition to our City of the Arts. Board Vice Chair Helen French will serve as Interim Executive Director. “I believe we succeeded in filling a vacuum in arts advocacy and leadership at the time, and in creating a supportive and collaborative environment for the growth of our creative community,” Collins said in a press statement. St. Pete’s Ya La’Ford is proving to be one the city’s most in-demand and recognized artists and now she has been commissioned by the National Football League to create the official NFL tribute gifts which will be presented to each team owner. Culinary adventure awaits at new Social Roost PHOTOS/SOCIAL ROOST

Social Roost itself is a clever play on words for this casual, drop-in bistro with a peculiar diversion to poulet, pollo, frango, or as we Americans call it, chicken. Combine two congenial owners, add one extraordinarily creative head chef, a Mad Menmeets-disco ambiance and a unique menu of both American and global cuisine and therein lies the foundation for Social Roost, downtown’s shining new star on the restaurant scene. The brainchild of owners and real-life partners Rob Bowen and Jason Teabout was born long before an inkling of a virus called Covid moved into town. But the couple was up for a new adventure, and so far, this one is getting rave reviews. Bowen, a well-known luxury interior designer who heads Rob Bowen Design Group, has put his magical touch on Social Roost through a sophisticated black, teal and glam gold color scheme, accented by an entire back wall of gold glitter (hail, disco!) and velvet banquettes. The devil is in the details and Bowen touts them with rose gold cutlery and crystal glasses and stemware. Smart technology throughout includes lighting and background music systems that automatically monitor and adjust to the light and sound in the room, and energy efficiency controls that regulate the air conditioning. An intimate craft cocktail bar and sidewalk patio dining beckon for date night or a classy happy hour cocktail.

fusion of chicken dishes, many influenced by the world travels of Bowen and Teabout. “We eat healthy so we wanted to focus on healthy food,” said Teabout. “Chicken is one of the purest high-protein foods in the world, and most everyone likes chicken. So we started from there.” Executive Chef Susan Burdian cooks each dish in a healthy manner by steaming and roasting, incorporating spices from around the world with a light touch. (Those with a kick are indicated on the menu.) We loved the authentic North African influenced Chicken Tagine, a classic stew that includes couscous, bits of apricot, orange, yogurt and saffron. The Thai-influenced Chicken Khao Soi features noodles swimming in a coconut curry broth, with enoki mushrooms, scallions, and cilantro. Like it spicy? A flaming chili oil can be added, but we found it perfect without. A nod to the Deep South can be found in a classic Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich served on a bun with coleslaw and pickles, Chicken Pot Pie, and Chicken and Waffles featuring breaded and deep-fried chicken served atop a crispy waffle with smoked maple syrup. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches and salads are perfect for a light lunch. Our Chicken Cuban came with chunks of mojo chicken, honeymaple ham, swiss cheese, pickles, with a grainy brown mustard on perfectly grilled Cuban bread. For an interesting twist, order the Banh Mi, a roasted chicken sandwich on French baguette with curry
DINING OUT mango chutney. Light bites include a Chicken Samosa, delicate pastry triangles with a ground chicken and spice filling served with two creamy dips, or Chicken Quesadillas. But chicken isn’t the only thing on the menu. Marinated Skirt Steak, Filet, Scallops, Ahi Tuna Poke and a daily market fish entrée round out the menu. Vegetarians get a nod with a crazy-good Wild Mushroom Salad accompanied by a truffle portabella mousse and Porto Romesco, a grilled portabella sandwich topped with roasted red pepper, goat cheese and arugula. It’s obvious Bowen and Teabout had fun creating the craft cocktail menu. With a name like Social Roost, they came up with a selection
of names that reflect society – The Socialite, The Goddess, the Jet Setter, The Social Butterfly and The Diplomat, which literally smokes with a mix of mezcal, Campari, coffee and bitters. An excellent menu of fine wines and craft beers is also available. The latest addition of Sunday Brunch debuted after our visits but looks totally worthy of consideration. Served from 10 am to 4 pm, the menu features a number of favorite menu items like Chicken & Waffles, a few salads and sandwiches, but then blows the doors off with items such as Stuffed French Toast, a Frittata that comes in four different versions, and Shakshuka, a poached egg and tomato sauce dish originating from the Middle East. Reservations are highly recommended.

Take Time to Explor e Affordable ‘Any Day’ Wines
BY WILL HOWARD We often celebrate special occasions with a nice bottle of wine, like Champagne on New Year’s Eve. But what bottle do you drink on any average day?
some pithy lemon. The finish fades quickly and you can taste a little bitterness at the end. This wine would be best paired with a rich fish, like grilled salmon.
I’m looking for the wine to just get through a long week. A wine for any old Wednesday. I’m diving into four wines that meet two simple criteria: 1) the wine is readily available in our local community and 2) the cost is less than $20 per bottle. I’m going to taste the wines blind (without seeing what bottle it was poured from), take some unbiased tasting notes, suggest a food pairing, and offer my take on the wine. I have not tasted any of these wines prior to this tasting.
Jacques Charlet, Chardonnay, Macon-Villages La Crochette, Burgundy (2018) - This wine is clear and pale straw color. The smell is subtle, crisp, clean, floral, and a little gravelly. The wine tastes like yellow apple, lime zest, and wet stone. The wine is mouthwatering, yet dry. There is moderate length to the finish. The wine seems fairly low in alcohol and brings you right back for another sip. This wine begs for food and would certainly be enhanced with some chèvre.
Two of my “any day” wines can be found at Publix and were two of the biggest selling wines in the country last year: Josh Cellars, Chardonnay, California (2019) and 19 Crimes, Red Wine, South Eastern Australia (2018). Josh Cellars is the No. 2 largest growing wine brand in the U.S. and 19 Crimes is the No. 5 largest growing brand in the U.S. With that being said, there definitely won’t be any trouble finding these two bottles.
19 Crimes, Red Wine, South Eastern Australia (2018) - This wine is clear and ruby color. The wine has an aroma of red licorice, black cherry, baking spices, and cola. The wine seems almost sweet at first, but finishes dry. The tannins are soft and the wine has a smooth, creamy texture. The alcohol seems pretty low and the wine has a moderate finish with the flavor of plums at the end. I’d pair this wine with something salty and fatty, like fried chicken and waffles.
The next two “any day” wines can be found at CellarMasters Wine Bar & Bottle Shop on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg: Jacques Charlet, Chardonnay, Macon-Villages La Crochette, Burgundy (2018) and La Mateo, Tempranillo, Rioja (2018). These wines aren’t breaking any sales records like the last wines, but they are available at your friendly local wine shop and come in under $20.
La Mateo, Tempranillo, Rioja (2018) - This wine is clear and garnet color. The wine smells like ripe strawberry, currant, rhubarb, and a hint of sweet tobacco. This wine is dry with gripping tannin. The wine is fruity and playful at first. Some elevated acidity keeps the wine dancing around through the palette. The wine finishes quite dry with tannin and black pepper that lingers for some time. This wine would pair excellently with cured meats and some sweet preserves.
Let’s find out if they can stand up to the big dogs. Josh Cellars, Chardonnay, California (2019) - This wine is clear and light honey color. The wine smells overall like ripe peach, but with a hint of flowers. The aroma is intense and inviting. On the first sip I taste peach, but only for an instant. The flavor quickly evolves to green apple and is somewhat tart at first. There’s a hint of oak, but the fruit is the predominant flavor. Peachy with a little honey and

There’s no judgement passed on your “any day” wine. As always, rule No. 1 is drink what you like. If any of these wines sound like something you’re into, then check them out. For me, the La Mateo is the winner of this bunch. Will Howard is Sommelier at Rococo Steak in St. Petersburg.

What I Learned You all make us proud to live in St. Pete. You all make us St. Pete Strong.
It’s been one year since the COVID-19 virus took over the country like an unexpected terrorist. Despite the fear and confusion, the anguish and sorrow, we have witnessed great acts of kindness and generosity and learned lessons along the way. We asked local healthcare and community workers to look back at the last year and tell us what they have learned about themselves or others. The responses we received are heart-warming reminders that at our very core, family and personal connections are what pull us through in troubling times. — Marcia Biggs, SPL Editor
Meghan Martin, MD Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital I feel like I’ve been busy my whole life. I started my family in medical school, and now as an attending physician, I have four kids. All of them have activities and we were constantly on the move between tennis practices, piano lessons, gymnastics, etc. I felt like that one night of the week we could relax was golden, if I didn’t have to work. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and all of these activities were cancelled, I initially found myself paralyzed. I almost felt guilty being still for a moment. There must have been something to accomplish. Then it hit me. I have rarely been truly present with my family. There has always been something to prepare for. Sure, we’ve had quiet evenings, but our lives are so fast paced, and activity driven. COVID-19 forced us to slow down and while initially it was almost uncomfortable to be slow, now I have really started to engage more with my kids. We play with Play-Doh in the morning and we play in the backyard after school. Messy ice cream sundaes after dinner. It’s amazing what I would have missed if I wasn’t forced to slow down.

SPL SPOTLIGHT Deb Imbach, RN, MS, CHPCA Director of Clinical Operations, Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care We cannot trust this virus, it is something that we can’t see and it is taking people down. The virus does not discriminate. Friends have tested positive, some sick, some not. Quarantine becomes a way of life. My 46-year-old nephew Tyson in Pennsylvania fell ill with COVID-19. He was hospitalized and we thought he was dying. We began having final conversations, or so we thought. Hopelessness. But he pulled through and seven days after he was admitted to the hospital in extremely poor condition, he was allowed to go home to his family. My personal experience of a loved one who almost died from COVID has taught me that I continue to practice caution, I protect myself and others, I wear my mask, I received my vaccination and I advocate for access to vaccinate the community. I know that COVID does not discriminate, it sickens healthy people, it threatens everyone. What was once important is no longer. Seeing a friend face to face, holding a socially distanced meeting in person, and fellowship with others is essential. Connections and protections are what is important. Keeping our families and friends in our precious circle of protection is priceless. This virus wants to rob us of what makes us human but it cannot rob us of hope, compassion, and moving forward to protect our community from surges in the disease.
Nathan Jones BSN, RN, EMT-P Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital When COVID hit the U.S. hospital systems, no one knew what to expect. Being a pediatric ICU nurse, I did not see the full effect of COVID-19 as the adult ICU nurses, but I did experience firsthand how COVID affects us all. We couldn’t go out, places were closed and people were dying. It was a fear I think the whole world shared.

with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), I saw many friends losing their jobs and wondering what are they going to do, and people blatantly deny that the virus is real. I found myself spending more time at home, working on projects, playing with my kids, and finishing my education. That was my way of coping with this pandemic. The life lesson I learned early on during all this is, the real true essentials in life are closer than you think. I found that all you need is family, happiness and good friends to get you through anything ... including a pandemic.
I learned more about other people than I did myself during the pandemic. I saw people lose their loved ones, watch their kids deal

SPL SPOTLIGHT Eric Keaton, CMO SPCA Tampa Bay This COVID-19 experience has challenged many organizations especially non-profits. Our staff has been resilient taking care of the shelter pets and wildlife we see annually. Despite the pandemic our mission and work continued to flourish.
Eric Keaton with pet pals Roxie and Sharie.
All of us in the animal welfare business learned what we already knew: the unique bond between humans and animals strengthened. At SPCA Tampa Bay we call it Spreading the Humanimality. Our pets are always there for us. They enjoyed having their humans at home while we worked from a makeshift home office. However, some of our staff could not work from home. During the peak of hurricane season SPCA Tampa Bay worked with
several regional organizations to transport hundreds of animals to safety. COVID-19 or not we had to accomplish the mission. Throughout the pandemic our team also showcased their creativity by finding new ways to continue fundraising without the traditional events. In November, our fund drive called “Paw It Forward” reached new audiences and new donors. Sharing our story and how we serve the community brought us closer to the people and the animals we developed relationships with over the years. The biggest lesson I have learned this past year is our growing need for a connection and to disconnect as well. Working from home was actually longer hours and more time online. We need to connect with each other offline, and disconnect from our devices.
Lariana Forsythe, CEO CASA | End Violence: Stand Up To Silence Dear COVID-19, You were far away, something that happened to other people. But slowly and methodically, you entered my world. I feel confused and dazed. What rules do I follow? They seem to change every day. I can’t leave my house. I’m not allowed to see my friends. If I shelter at my parent’s house, would they die? If I did leave, how many more people will be hurt? If I did leave, would I even be safe? Your strength is invisible, yet your grip is fierce. Protections against you are flimsy, and you are not easily detoured. And so I put on a brave face and a happy smile, praying, hoping this ugliness will pass. How do I escape your grasp when you give no notice of when you’ll strike? I feel powerless against you. And so I wait. In a hell not unlike my normal life. Yours truly, Victims of Domestic Violence For people experiencing domestic violence, the COVID-19 pandemic has mirrored the fear, vulnerability, and uncertainty surrounding their abusive relationship and compounded the trauma and isolation inflicted on them. At CASA, we’re committed to helping those who are not “safer at home” find the peace and safety they deserve. CASA’s 24-hour Emergency Hotline: (727) 895-4912 | TTY: (727) 828-1269

SPL SPOTLIGHT Kayla Cavicchio, BSN, RN, CEN St. Anthony’s Hospital Before it began, 2020 was given expectations to be a year of vision, a new decade of hope. Despite the anticipation, 2020 became a perfect storm with the outbreak of COVID-19. Out of the storm were lessons to learn, worldwide and within me personally. Lessons learned about the human spirit are the ones that will stay with me forever. I became acquainted with the generous people of St. Petersburg. Many selfless people dropped off homemade masks. In a time when grocery shelves were lean, people delivered more food than could be imagined. These were people who took time out of their lives and used their resources and talents to take care of us. I was in awe of how immensely dedicated our emergency room staff was in a time with so many unknowns. Through all the chaos and confusion, our unity to provide care to the community was inspiring. We stood by each other as always when things got tough, relying on one another in ways we never expected. Our actions and resilience gave each other and the community reassurance that we will get through this together which is a lesson worth learning.
Kirsten Berg, RN Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Bayfront Health St. Petersburg I think we all can agree that everyone has suffered and struggled in some way during the times of COVID-19. As a registered nurse, I have witnessed first-hand the struggle of those fighting for their lives and those coping with unexpected loss, and I have experienced the crushing emotions that have overtaken those dealing with loss. Many others have lost jobs and businesses during this time and their struggle has not gone unnoticed. During this time, I have managed to realize what is important in my life and that includes the human connections I have made and strengthened as I have witnessed those struggling come together and support each other during hard times. I have also witnessed tremendous love for one another between families, friends and nurses. No one ever could have expected what was to come of this, but I do feel that this pandemic made most of us realize we are stronger than we could have imagined.

SPL SPOTLIGHT Hope Woodson, Health Center Director St. Petersburg Free Clinic To be a healthcare professional at the starting phases of a pandemic, throws you into a cycle that mirrors the states of grief. Denial: Though keenly aware of the impact of a novel virus, this cannot possibly be happening. I will not panic, it will go away before we have even begun. Anger: I just started this job, I just moved here. I’m making progress with our clinic, I cannot believe this virus is disrupting my work life, home life, new friendships and any progress I’ve made with my patients.
At various parts of the pandemic, these emotions elevated and dissipated over and over with zero pattern and without prediction. On days of quiet and acceptance it was important that I took time to realize I was not alone in these thoughts. I still had food, shelter and my health. The patients we care for at the St Petersburg Free Clinic Health Center rarely have that trifecta of comfort. The overall impact of this pandemic was crippling to those we serve. Patients were afraid to leave their homes for care, some lost their income completely and many could not get important prescriptions they needed for maintenance of chronic conditions.
Bargaining: If we as a society do everything we are told, we will be back sooner than expected. Our doors will open and our patients will return. Depression: I miss my coworkers, I miss my patients, I miss my family. Our clinic will never return to normal; it is not impossible. Everything we love about our work will change.
Often, we get lost in everyday patterns of operations and forget how much we matter to those we serve. My staff and I will not take that for granted when this is all over. We will remember every “thank you for staying open,” “thank you for helping me get my medical supplies,” “thank you for help with my pain,” “thank you for listening.”
Acceptance: As a work team we are getting into a new groove. We have bonded as a staff and we can safely continue to see patients and make a difference.
Elizabeth Shirley, RN St. Anthony’s Hospital ICU There have been a lot of things to learn during our experiences with COVID-19 and I am sure there are still many more to come. I feel my most important lesson was realizing how important our relationships with our patients’ family members are. When COVID-19 numbers were growing, our hospital quickly restricted visitors to ensure the safety of our team members and patients. After only a few weeks, it was so evident how much we missed them. To me, family members not only offer a personal insight on patients but also PHOTOS/STEVEN LE

This pandemic has opened my eyes to several things. We can see patients in a non-traditional clinic format. We can adjust our clinical way of operating to meet the needs of patients, as well as keep our staff and clients safe. We matter to our patients; we are their healthcare home.
play a role in their healing process. They provide comfort, care and might even notice subtle changes in condition. Additionally, a unit full of ventilated patients without anyone to share their unique stories took something away from what I enjoy about nursing. I was able to get through the day, but I missed stories about their grandkids, their favorite pet or hearing about how they met their spouse. I have coped by spending more time on the phone with a patient’s family or utilizing our video chat tablets. It was a lesson to me learning how much I value that personal connection that was lost during our lockdown. As a lesson going forward, I am sure to tell my visitors how important they are to me, my team and their loved one.
SPL SPOTLIGHT Megan Patterson, RN Neuro Progressive Care Unit Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Looking back over the last year, I can safely say that the COVID-19 pandemic came with several life lessons: fear, mental health, and the value of healthcare workers. Volunteering for the COVID-19 unit, I realized I wasn’t afraid when I was at work; I was doing what I was trained to do. Fear of the unknown is what weighed heavily on my shoulders. As time progressed, medications and interventions supporting better patient outcomes were discovered and fear of the unknown wasn’t as heavy. To take care of me, I needed to find a mental escape, I needed something that would consume my mind when I wasn’t at work.
I enrolled in a BSN program and that helped me focus on something other than the pandemic. The 8 pm cheers coming from downtown residents in St. Petersburg were emotional. I’m grateful for a supportive community. I think it’s important for others to realize that during the pandemic, healthcare workers weren’t doing their jobs differently. I’m passionate about caring for sick people. I’ve done this pre-pandemic, during pandemic, and will continue to do it post-pandemic.

Brittany Hamilton, RN, BSN, CCRN Manager, Quality Process Improvement and Patient Safety Quality Assurance Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Personally and professionally, COVID-19 has been a roller coaster of emotions for me. As a nurse, I have seen the fear and panic of my peers facing the difficulties of working the frontlines during a pandemic. Over the last year, I have watched my colleagues and friends fall ill and fight for their health. I have worried for my family’s safety, while longing for the company of friends. Despite these troubled times, I have experienced feelings of joy and pride. I have cherished the extra time with family and enjoyed different adventures, like car parades! I am proud of my healthcare colleagues. They continuously strive to push forward, coming together to provide a sense of hope for the community. I have valued learning from my peers as we began operations for vaccination clinics within the facility. We have cried tears of joy with patients who were able to receive their COVID vaccine. This year has provided me with many new abilities from creating online meetings to common core second-grade math.

Lisa Williams
Evolve & Co. President/Founder If it’s a challenge, Lisa Williams is up for it. As founder and president of full-service advertising agency Evolve & Co., she steers a small but mighty team of young creatives who thrive on St. Pete’s energy and growth. The company’s office in the historic Kress Building in downtown St. Pete is home base, while most of her crew works from home. Evolve helps companies, organizations and individuals create an identity and then get the word out. Her clients range from bars, restaurants and hotels to artists and charitable organizations. From brand development to website design, videos and social media, public relations and advertising, Williams is a pro at research and campaign development. She also cares about her community. In April of 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing havoc across Tampa Bay, Williams created a Local Heroes campaign aimed at rewarding essential workers, first responders and other dogooders for their selfless support and generosity to the community. She approached her clients, many in hospitality, who donated thousands of dollars worth of gifts from hotel staycations to restaurant gift cards. “The company was founded on the premise that when we can give, we do,” she said. “We donate a significant amount of resources each year to various local and national charities.” What inspired you to start Evolve & Co? Having worked in the advertising industry for the better part of a decade, I was often on the ad sales side of things, essentially pushing shareholders’ agendas on clients that served only a portion of their needs. When I left ad sales and moved over to agency work, I fell in love with ideation and creation. I worked with multimillion dollar firms on Fortune 500’s and also with boutique agencies, directly with the ownership of a brand. It was there, seeing how impactful my work could be, I found my true passion and formed Evolve & Co. in 2016. What is the best part of your job? There are many aspects to love. For me, it’s the ideation that keeps me up at night with excitement. I also truly enjoy the culture we’ve cultivated within the agency … The best part of agency work is impacting change or shaping human behavior. I especially love this in the charity sector, where one well-written headline or creative ad PHOTOS/STEVEN LE campaign can profoundly and positively affect lives.

People To Watch What kind of leader are you? That’s definitely a question best answered by the team (a creative director, junior designer, illustrator, videographer, web developer, senior brand manager, photographer, copywriter, and interns.) I think they’ll say passionate, open minded, and logical. (Here’s what they actually said: Knowledgeable. Helpful. Inspirational. Encouraging. Passionate.) What’s in the future for Evolve & Co? We specialize in the hospitality sector, so when COVID hit, it wiped about 70% of our clientele off the map for a month or two. From a logistical standpoint, we had to make some big changes to our work-flow. PreCOVID, we built campaigns by the quarter and were always one month ahead. With varying federal, state, and local mandates implemented (occupancy, masks, etc.), our design and copywriting teams have been working more real-time than we ever have. The team has taken the challenges head-on, and I’m immensely proud of the work we’ve produced despite the heaviness of the issues at hand. What advice would you give to other business owners? One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned along this journey is the power of time. If you can learn to optimize your time, you’ll have an advantage. For me, it’s little things like prioritizing my most intensive projects during the most productive time of my day. The past year has been challenging for small businesses. What measures have you taken to keep on track? We’re agile as a company and can easily scale, but like many small businesses, didn’t see a global pandemic coming. Our hospitality clients were forced to shut their doors, and in good faith, we decided as an agency to keep fulfilling our retainers - without invoicing. We kept our clients’ brands top of mind and their narratives alive for when they could reopen. This gesture garnered a loyalty that has been our lifeblood. What advice can you give to entrepreneurs just starting out? There are a great deal of resources for new and entrepreneurial businesses in St. Petersburg, but the best advice I can offer anyone embarking on a new business venture is to DEFINE YOUR BRAND before you do anything else. Craft a mission statement, research your market + competition, and perfect your branding. Everything you do from that point forward should serve your mission … the programs you invest in, the best resources to utilize, and all the ways in which you will position your brand.

Are you Struggling with Anxiety? Research has consistently shown that the stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic has had a negative impact on mental health. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) determined that the most common mental illness in the U.S. are anxiety disorders. Additionally, those suffering with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. So how does one know whether his/her anxiety is normal “worry,” or if if is an anxiety disorder? This is a reasonable question and one that is being asked more frequently now.

Feeling Overwhelmed and Anxious? Having difficulty navigating through life? Feeling stuck?
PHOTO/THEE PHOTO NINJA
Distinguishing the difference between regular stress and an anxiety disorder is not always simple. Worrying is a normal reaction to a stressful or fearful event. For example, if you are worried about a presentation at work, meeting a deadline, etc., that’s a normal worry that can create some mild anxiety and typically that feeling passes after the task has been accomplished. However, when anxiety grows so intense that it impacts an area of your daily functioning, that’s cause for concern. Our life is generally comprised of eight areas: friendships, family, spirituality, career, finances, relationship, health and “me time.” If any of these areas are being impacted, then it may be time to reach out to a therapist.
report a disruption in sleep due to their anxiety. It’s normal to have difficulty falling asleep from time to time, but when you find yourself laying awake at night with an endless loop of “what if” scenarios about your life , finances, relationships, etc., this may also be a sign that your anxiety is impacting you! Keep in mind, sleep is essential for optimal emotional health. Too much anxiety can also result in physiological symptoms, such as stomach distress, fatigue, headaches and can also compromise the immune system. In addition, if you find yourself having difficulty concentrating and/ or making decisions, anxiety may be the culprit. Lastly, if you are experiencing symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, tingling or even sweating, you may be experiencing panic attacks as a result of emotional overload.

ADVERTORIAL
What makes Guaranteed Rate Different? Guaranteed Rate was founded with the mission of delivering more value to customers than any other bank or mortgage company while providing its loan officers with the tools and flexibility we need in order to succeed in all aspects of business and life. The company was built on a principle of low rates, ground-breaking technology, complete transparency, excellent customer service and a quick, easy mortgage experience. In 2015, Guaranteed Rate launched the world’s first digital mortgage, bringing the mortgage process to the 21st century with online applications and real loan approval in less than 20 minutes. Why refinance now? With rates continuing to stay at historic lows, everyone interested in refinancing should talk with a loan officer to see if they can take advantage of this environment. This is a great opportunity for qualified borrowers to lower monthly payments. We are utilizing Guaranteed Rate’s technology to make the process of refinancing simple and fast. How has the pandemic affected home financing? In an effort to speed along the economic recovery, the Fed cut
interest rates to historic lows and has indicated that rates will be low for the foreseeable future. As borrowers look to benefit from the historic low rates, both purchase and refinance volume have been robust. This is good for homebuyers because lower rates create improved affordability, meaning borrowers can get more for their money and lower monthly payments. About Us Jeff Crain is the VP of Mortgage Lending for Guaranteed Rate in St.Petersburg. His constant dedication to a transparent and ethical lending process are just a few of the reasons he makes such an impact in the mortgage industry. “I moved to the Tampa Bay area when I was a teenager and I have watched St. Pete, Tampa and the beaches grow dramatically over the years. I am very lucky to have the privilege of raising my own family here today, so I know and follow the local markets closely.” Jeff graduated from Florida State University. Outside of the office Jeff enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife Jackie, and his two sons, J.R. and Jackson. He enjoys coaching little league baseball and taking family RV trips to FSU football games.

While our Florida weather allows us a longer season of outdoor enjoyment, it also poses challenges to our landscape and outdoor furnishings due to harsh sunlight exposure and, of course, dampness during our rainy season. We spoke with local experts about landscaping and tree care, new pool construction and maintenance, and the challenges of outdoor decorating.
Outdoor Decorating and Accessories Jesse Murse with Rugs As Art details some of the characteristics of outdoor rugs, which can enhance any outdoor living space or pool patio. “While outdoor rugs are technically referred to as ‘indoor/outdoor’, true outdoor rugs are usually thinner (to allow for drainage) and made of synthetic materials that are durable and able to ward off mildew and mold.” And while nothing is completely resistant to our harsh Florida sun, the UV treating process will certainly keep them from fading too quickly. These rugs can also be cleaned very easily simply by hosing off and letting them dry. From an aesthetic point of view, Murse says that bold tropical patterns such as palms, leaves and flowers are always popular here in Florida, but as he says, “We are seeing a trend for more linear and contemporary styles over the last year.” Rugs As Art can also create custom rugs, from simple designs to one of a kind works of art. many years in the design field and can turn your idea into a true work of art for your floor. From synthetic fibers to New Zealand wools and fine silk, hand tufted and hand knotted with unlimited colors (including custom dying to match fabrics) there is nothing she cannot create. In the interest of giving back, Rugs As Art has a partnered “Trees for the Future” program which plants a tree for every rug pad sold. Their eco-friendly premium rubber non-slip pads are washable, hold rugs flat and in place as well as extending the life of the rug. To date they have planted over 33,000 trees! For more information, see www.trees.org. Ever popular this year for outdoor accessories is pillows. Lots of them. Says Murse, “Besides rugs, this is the number one outdoor accessory. We have a huge selection of outdoor pillows that are machine washable, made in the USA, and feature fade resistant fabric for years of wear and enjoyment. We have many coastal themed designs, one of my favorites being our nautical map pillows.”

Tree Care and our Landscapes Nothing helps create a tropical outdoor vibe like the tropical foliage that thrives in our sunshine state. Certified Arborist Phil O’Connor, owner of Arbor Source Professional Tree Care, talked to us about maintenance and care of our local trees and shrubs. “For large trees, every two to three years we need to remove dead wood and do selective sprout pruning to keep them healthy and away from existing structures.” Foregoing regular care can lead to issues such as decay, which can cause failures in limbs or entire trees. Removal of invasive or non-native trees on your property may be necessary as well. “There is a place for them, but they take over real estate,” says O’Connor. Nuisance species can force out native species that would normally thrive in our landscape. Common invasive species include Cherry Laurels, Chinaberry Trees, Brazilian Peppers and Australian Pines.
Another challenge is with new home construction, or adding a second story to an existing home. “Creating a larger home may mean that some trees need to be ‘limbed up’ or trimmed away from a taller structure,” says O’Connor. Even more challenging are situations where Live Oaks are involved. Many trees are protected, and simply removing them may not be an option. Air root excavation is a service that O’Connor provides, which can preserve existing Live Oaks and redirect the root system so as not to interfere with a home’s foundation. “Pneumatic tools are used to expose the roots, so they can be pruned properly. A herbicide called Biobarrier can then be used to redirect the roots, followed by backfilling,” says O’Connor. This ensures that there will be no issue with the foundation in the future. When selecting a company to perform these services, O’Connor says “Look for three things in a company. A Certified Arborist, with liability insurance and worker’s comp.”

An Aquatic Oasis Whether you are thinking about adding a pool or upgrading your existing one, advancements in technology are playing a key role in pool design. Bart O’Connell, owner of Landmark Pools, has seen the trends change over the years. “Pools used to typically be a rectangle or kidney shape, and equipment included a time clock. Now designs are endless, and most pools are built for ease of use and maintenance. Salt has replaced chlorine, as it makes its own chemicals naturally.” Today’s pools can be controlled from your smart phone. “You can turn your pool heater on when you leave work,” adds O’Connell. LED lighting with a range of colors and themes is popular, along with water features such as the laminar water jet, which arches into a pool, often colored by LED lighting.

O’Connell notes that trends are leaning towards “Cleaner lines and contemporary looks like the Infinity Edge, which can encompass the entire perimeter of a pool. Lagoon style pools have given way to a more modern look.” Rain curtain waterfalls are also a popular feature that adds movement as well as calming sounds to your outdoor living space. O’Connell’s advice for before you start a new pool or remodel project? “Choose materials that you will like for the next ten years that will hold up. And explore your options vs. the cost.” He suggests considering travertine pavers or Pebble Tec for durable options. Also he says, “Plan for how it will be used. Is it for the kids? Will you be entertaining?” The answers should guide your choices.

Be prepared to wait if you plan to purchase new furniture this spring BY MARCIA BIGGS I had to have it – that apple green sofa on sale at Macy’s over Thanksgiving week. Having recently moved into larger digs, I could finally get rid of my little loveseat and move up to a full-size sofa. If I wanted it in two weeks, I could have it in grey? Never. White? The kiss of death. Beige? Boring. And so I wait, and wait, and wait for my apple green sofa to arrive. But I knew this was coming.

Thinking of updating or expanding your furnishings? Get ready for a wait up to three or even four months if you custom order. Alas, the home furnishings industry has been taken by storm in the last year, as the homebound seek to upgrade or expand their living spaces to provide both function and a reflection of their personal style.
and many people uncomfortable shopping in person, online purchasing has exploded for everything in the past year -- home furniture included. Ikea, for example, reported a 32 percent increase in e-commerce sales in 2020. This increase in demand combines with a number of other factors on the production, shipping and distribution levels, such as factories closing and worker layoffs, reduced trade with China, increased tariffs, a lumbar shortage, backed up cargo ships and a lack of delivery truck drivers. Adapting to these changes has been challenging for retailers, who are trying to keep up with the demand through online sales and livestream video selling. After re-opening, some stores switched to “virtual showroom” appointments or opened for individual one-on-one appointments in the showroom.

SPL LIVING report found consumers are looking for outdoor furniture that offers the same level of comfort as that provided by indoor furniture. The demand for quality outdoor furnishings in Southwest Florida is seeing all-time highs, says Stephanie Stegman, manager and buyer for Bonita Springs-based Elegant Outdoor Living. “Outdoor living has been a growing home improvement category for years,” she says, “but the COVID-19 pandemic has elevated the importance of having private space outside. Instead of traveling back up north or to second homes during summer months, people are staying in their Florida homes and investing that travel money back into their homes and creating their own outdoor vacation spot right at home. It is all about making your home feel special …
Outdoor Living Trends
Expanded outdoor living spaces with upgraded furnishing and firepits for year-round use are in high demand. Outdoor kitchens will continue to grow in popularity, along with patios, decks and screened porches. Look for more furnishings in neutral colors like gray, beige and white. “Many buyers settle for stock merchandise in order to expedite delivery,” says Stephanie Stegman of Elegant Outdoor Living. “Knowing the demand for in-stock merchandise, consumers should expect lots of neutral color palettes. They can add a pop of color in throw pillows and accessories like garden stools,
like you’re getting away from it all.” Her biggest piece of advice for anyone shopping for furniture is to buy quickly when you see something you like, and take it from stock inventory if you don’t want a long delivery waiting period. Her stock at Elegant Outdoor Living moves very quickly, she says, because most customers “want it tomorrow.” Be patient and understand the principal of supply and demand is at work – even when it comes to pool umbrellas. If you must have a custom order, be prepared to wait. “A special order one year ago would take four to six weeks, but now it is taking 16-20 weeks,” Stegman warns. “Everyone is affected and everyone is working their very best to try to keep up with the unexpected demand.”
umbrellas, rugs and tabletop items.” In addition, fully coordinated outdoor setups are popular for entire lanais, she said, such as sofas or sectional seating areas with coordinating dining furniture. The days of gravitating to a large front porch are waning. Privacy is an increasing priority which is why the back yard is now the main place for gathering with family or relaxing. Sheltered decks and covered patios that offer shade, privacy and flowers or greenery offer respites for dining, meditation, resting or even working. Look for pergolas with flowering vines to lend beauty and shade.

last two decades. Because of the warm climate and continuous availability of host plants — that’s milkweed — much of Central and South Florida’s monarch population stays in the state year-round and breeds continuously throughout the year.
Milkweed is the host plant for the monarch butterfly, the only plant where they lay their eggs. Without milkweed, the larvae would not be able to develop into butterflies, and monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed.
One way we, as urban homeowners and renters, can help the struggling monarch is fairly obvious — grow more milkweed. A lot more milkweed. A female can lay hundreds of eggs in one day, so it takes a lot of milkweed to sustain the larvae as it grows into a caterpillar, munching its way from stalk to stalk.
Monarch butterflies have been on earth for more than 10 million years, but their numbers have substantially dropped over the

HOME & GARDEN seeds,” says Chris Parisi, a Tarpon Springs native plant expert who grows various strains of native milkweed for sale to nurseries and wholesalers. “You might get 25 to 50 eggs on one plant, they can be from different females, so just having three or four plants is considered a starvation station.” Parisi is advocating seeds over seedlings for several reasons, one being the cost can run into a lot of money if you transplant a good number of store-bought plants (they are not cheap despite being a weed). Another is that milkweed is hard to find, most nurseries and big box stores run out of stock very quickly. “Figure two caterpillars for every gallon of milkweed,” says Parisi. “The more milkweed, the more will survive. And butterflies will lay eggs year-round. It generally takes 60 to 90 days to fully grow milkweed from seed, so it’s important to keep growing year-round.” He says growing indoors in seedling trays is the way to go for success, not tossing into an untended bed. They will need full sun to partial shade and constant watering to get rooted. Once they have grown leaves, they can be placed in a garden or outdoor pots. Milkweed actually does well in pots, he adds. “You can move them around and they will thrive, especially in partial shade.” Nicole Jones, who owns Hort and Soul Landscape Design in Palm Harbor, says planting a variety of native wildflowers and grasses along with milkweed can be especially advantageous not only for monarchs, but for all butterflies. “By mixing pollinator plants and native grasses of different colors and heights, you’ll offer food and host plants for butterflies for each season,” she says. “You should try to plant them all over, too, not just in one place.” Indeed, a recent University of Florida study suggests that adding other flowering plants to the mix may help monarchs more than milkweed alone. The study found that monarch butterflies laid 22 percent more eggs on milkweed in plots with a mix of milkweed and other flowering plants than they did in plots with a single milkweed species. Before planting a butterfly garden, Jones says you should determine if pesticides are being applied regularly anywhere nearby. “These can be toxic to butterflies if they get on milkweed,” she warns. “You don’t even want to attract them.” If you’re lucky enough to have caterpillars on your milkweed survive to chrysalis stage, it can be an exciting and rewarding experience. And don’t think you need a yard to accomplish a monarch habitat. My apartment back patio turned into a giant butterfly nursery last summer thanks to four full-grown milkweed in pots. Yes, I plan to grow more milkweed, lots more milkweed.

DIY Butterfly Gardening
Create a monarch habitat in your yard by providing milkweed, other flowering plants, water and shelter for the caterpillars to form a chrysalis. Large rocks in the sun will attract the butterflies to rest. There are 21 native milkweed species in Florida, but the one most commonly found here is the butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), a perennial with orange or yellow flowers that appear in late summer and early fall. It attracts monarch butterflies for nectar and larval food. Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnate), a creamy pink, is also becoming more prevalent. While planting native milkweed is always preferred, says Chris Parisi, it’s not easy to find. Very few nurseries carry the native varieties. Outdoor Amenities By Doug King, CR, CGC, MBA King Contracting, Inc. NARI National President
ADVERTORIAL
Ahhhh, the great outdoors! People have always loved to be outdoors, but we usually travelled to a destination to enjoy an outdoor excursion. The pandemic has changed the way we work, where we play and how we live at home. Our backyards have become the oasis and now the excursion consists of getting there from your bedroom or the main living area of your home. So, when you walk outside from your house, what are the backyard features you might like to see? Does your new athome lifestyle create some “must-haves”? Or are you simply looking for a place to escape from the craziness of 2020? I will note several in this article both from my own personal perspective and from the perspective as a contractor who hears and sees what clients are asking to have installed in their back yards. Pools are the number one item being added to a back yard. Not just any pool but ones with a hot tub connected, perhaps with a water fall feature. For homes that already have a pool, many are upgrading the decking around it, maybe re-surfacing the pool itself or adding an elevated hot tub or other water feature to the existing pool. Another way to increase outdoor living space is to build a lanai roof that connects to and blends in with the roof of the main house. This enables easy passage from the interior of the main house to the pool and to the outdoor kitchen while being
60
StPeteLifeMag.com

protected from the sun and rain. Two columns typically support the roof structure and these may be decorated with stone, glass tile or simply stuccoed to match the house. Ceilings are usually vaulted and covered with stained T&G boards. Another nice option are the PVC products that are very durable and are either paintable or come pre-stained from the factory. Outdoor kitchens have long been perceived as a luxury item, but now many households need to cook larger meals for more people and household members are literally not able to “…stand the heat so they are getting out of the kitchen”! The outdoor kitchen might be positioned just outside of the indoor kitchen to help with coordinating food and beverage delivery. Or it may be a stand-alone kitchen that includes a sink, undercounter fridge and grill with cabinetry for storage. Cabinetry materials range from stainless steel to acrylic and PVC blends to natural woods such as cypress. Counter tops are usually a quartz or granite and it is highly advisable to have a roof, such as a lanai roof or a tiki hut style roof to protect the kitchen components. Besides, who wants to grill kiboshes under a blazing sun!

St. Pete Grand Prix Moves to April
Photos/Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
With COVID-19 remaining a dynamic situation for us all, the organizers of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and City officials called the yellow flag on the season opener set for March 5-6 opting to reschedule for April 23-25. “We appreciate the officials at INDYCAR for their support in setting a new date for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, and also to Mayor Kriseman and his team at the City of St. Petersburg for identifying a time when it will be conducive for more fans to attend,” said Kim Green, co-owner, chairman and CEO of GSSP, organizers of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. “We are grateful to keep the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in the springtime window and also maintain the live national broadcast coverage of the race on NBC.” The 17th annual NTT INDYCAR SERIES race in St. Pete is currently set for Sunday, April 25, if organizers, along with City of St. Petersburg officials, deem it the best date for all involved given the current conditions. The level of spectator attendance to be permitted will be determined in collaboration with county and local health officials. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg was the final race of the 2020 season with an INDYCAR champion crowned (Scott Dixon). The event took place at a reduced capacity October 23-25, delayed from last March due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While fans may have to wait a bit longer than planned, the anticipation builds stronger for another great weekend watching the excitement on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront and Albert Whitted Airport runways. Attempting to maintain his winning streak after taking the trophy in 2019 and 2020 will be Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden. With October’s win, Newgarden continued a trend of

back-to-back wins on the streets of St. Pete. (Since 2015, the race has been won back-to-back by three drivers. Juan Pablo Montoya did it in 2015-16, Sebastien Bourdais in 2017-18, and mostly recently by Newgarden in 2019-20.) St. Pete resident and four-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais, driving for A.J. Foyt Racing, will undoubtedly remain the hometown favorite to win it again for a third time. Building the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street track is a massive undertaking for the race organizers working with the City’s events team, engineers and work crews who spend just over three weeks in construction around Pioneer Park, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts Mahaffey Theater, the Dali Museum and lastly on the runways of Albert Whitted Airport. But the collaboration of the City of St. Petersburg and the staff from Green Savoree Racing Promotions, has resulted in a well-oiled machine. In October, Firestone announced a three-year extension of its title sponsorship for the St. Pete race, continuing a partnership which began in 2014 through the 2023 event. As in October 2020, the race weekend will be operated with continued caution and the necessary health and safety requirements put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. April’s Grand Prix will follow closely the guidance of the City of St. Petersburg “Race to Safe” initiatives for COVID-19. Fans can get updates on the complete measures to be implemented at gpstpete. com/COVID19. The April 25th race will be broadcast live to a national audience on NBC. SPL EVENTS Dan Wheldon And Victory Circle Monument
In 2011, an incredibly important man was lost, not only to the INDYCAR family, but also his hometown of St. Petersburg. The loss of driver Dan Wheldon aka “Lionheart” and his impact continues to be felt from his fellow athletes who loved him, the up-andcoming drivers who idolized him, and the fans who cheered for him. On March 21, 2013, the Dan Wheldon and Victory Circle Monuments were unveiled to continue on Wheldon’s legacy for years to come and recognize those who have also won on the streets of St. Petersburg.
All the winners previous to 2013 were installed during the ceremony with plaques commemorating their victories here. Each year, the previous year’s winner is presented a plaque that he personally receives and installs into a permanent place on the Victory Circle Monument, taking a moment to honor the legacy of Dan Wheldon. During race weekend this April, Josef Newgarden will stand at the monument again carrying on the tradition. Fans and the public can visit both of these monuments anytime, located south of the intersection of Bayshore Drive SE and Dan Wheldon Way just beyond the track’s Turn 10.

Benz GT53 AMG Shifts Luxe Sedan Market Into Overdrive
BY NITISH S. RELE OK, so it isn’t quite as fast as the Corvette Stingray Z51 but this one can still fly! The “four-door, four-passenger coupe,” as Mercedes calls its performance-oriented sedan, reaches 60 mph from a standing stop in a mere 4.4 seconds. Top speed is rated at 174 mph. They’re not earth-shattering numbers but still very impressive, one must admit. But after all, the 3.0-liter turbo inline-six engine with an integrated EQ starter-generator (located between engine and transmission) in the GT53 isn’t just a run-of-the-mill. It was specially hand built by the AMG division in Affalterbach, Germany. Step on the throttle of the all-wheel-drive luxury car to blast off with its 429 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 384 pounds-feet of torque at 5,800 rpm. Mated to a slick and effective 9-speed automatic gearbox, the E53 is equipped with a razor-sharp, electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering. Suspension is handled competently by an independent multi-link system. Both ends have gas shocks and coil springs to improve ride comfort. Bringing the speed demon to a halt are AMG high-performance vented 14.2inch brake discs. To vary the driving experience, this Benz comes in slippery, individual, comfort, race, sport, and sports+ modes. Walk up to the GT53 and the first element that grabs your attention are vertical high-gloss chrome struts decking up the radiator grille, embossed with AMG badge and the familiar three-pointed star. Horizontal LED headlights decked with carbon fiber components please the eye. The lavish, elegant cabin is expected of any AMGequipped Benz with dual auto a/c, Burmester surround sound system, wireless charge pad, illuminated door sills, panoramic sunroof, steering wheel-mounted shifters, and heated front seats. AMG enthusiasts will quickly notice the emblem imprinted on the seat backs. All materials and craftsmanship are top-notch.

Stylish ‘Burgers reveal their fashionista favorites
I believe it takes a certain amount of sense for aesthetics to dress well. To be trendy, it takes taste and some knowledge. My favorite styles are the ones that don’t blindly follow the trends but embrace our personality and accentuate our best features. Therefore, I decided to ask my readers for their fashionable choices. The results are refreshing and sometimes surprising. Mostly what comes across is that we are feminine, we are stylish, we are practical, classy, and sassy, we care because we are women. So, come with me on the journey of discovery of what Tampa Bay women love in fashion. What is the one item you buy brand new for Spring? Spring symbolizes new beginnings. For our wardrobe, we love to refresh our look with new and feminine items. The most mentioned was a new dress, either for Easter like Barbara P. likes to do, a new fun summer dress for Solange G. or a classic one for any occasion like Maureen G. prefers. Unique tops come in second, ones that we can wear with a variety of bottoms. Handbags are strong contenders to be purchased in Spring, followed closely by sunglasses. But my favorite new Spring item came from Dee P. who loves to reward herself with a gorgeously flowy, luscious Spring flower print duster!

What is your favorite trend right now? Fashion today offers many choices, and the responses to this question were the most versatile. But I’m delighted to notice that there was one strong common denominator – femininity. We love our style to be effortless and chic, with trendy puff sleeves like Solange G., bejeweled jeans with bling tuxedo stripes are Dee P.’s favorite. Christine H. loves the newly arriving crochet dresses, Tracy E. like many others loves the bright colors with yellow Pamela R.’s preference. Barbara P., however, pointed to my favorite detail making a strong comeback – the belt. What was the last fashion purchase you were most excited about? To my delight I’m in great company — most of my responders mention boots in one way or another as favorite pieces. Richie S. loves her new pair of snakeskin print with red accent shoes. Lauren F. loves her leather jacket, and Pauline D. sleek boots, Dee P. is thrilled about her leather jacket with snakeskin trim and jeans with tuxedo stripe that match the jacket. Christine H.’s find was a strapless white jumpsuit. Sylvia K. bought a pair of animal print ankle boots!

something from the famous house. Flamboyant Versace styles and Louboutin shoes find their place in Dee P.’s heart. Some of Lauren F’s contemporary, urban favorites are Rag n Bone and Helmut Lang. We see hip Free People lovers with Tracy E., bohemian Hale Bob and colorful Lilly Pulitzer with Pauline D., Solange G. feels that Balmain designs are distinctive compare to others, like punk and chic would join a piece of art. But the most mentioned and wearable label was Joseph Ribkoff, the brand Richie S. describes as one that always adds the unexpected to his collection.
What would you love to add to your wardrobe if anything goes? Here once again we are showing that we love our feminine wardrobe and longing for romantic details that would coordinate with our contemporary styles. Dee P. wants to see more old glam flowing pants with furs and boas, and long evening gloves combined with sexy, slit skirts. Tracy E. desires more fine Italian handbags and shoes. Sylvia K. dreams of floor-length anything, cardigans, dusters, dresses. Richie S. dreams of cashmere lounge pants and top. But the most mentioned item many of us would love to see in today’s fashion is a hat. A great headpiece is the most stylish finishing touch to any look, and we have an appreciation for it. What is the one fashion item you would splurge on? No surprises here — we love to splurge, and the list of what we love to splurge on is long. What we all agree on is that we indulge in what we love the most. For some like Valerie M. and many others it is jewelry. Occasionally we buy that extraordinary, everlasting piece of fine jewelry, sometimes we collect unique pieces of fashion jewelry to update everyday styles. Purses and shoes are equally popular on Lauren F.’s splurging list, followed closely by good slacks that are Barbara P’s favorite and great coats/jackets according to Andrea J. Solange shared with me her peculiar splurging obsession — a good sweater. I don’t see anything unusual about that, do you? What label do you consider totally cool? The timeless meets the modern here, and designers’ names of all fashion levels do make their way to our homes. Let’s start with one of the most classic and recognizable names in the fashion industry – Channel. Christine H. like many other Channel lovers just must have
If you could buy only one thing tomorrow what would it be? We either unleash our dreams and go for the one item we really want, or think practically about what would go with most items in our closet. A classic white blouse that fits well and pairs perfectly with jeans, slacks, and leggings is what Virginia B. desires. A glamorous satin ball gown that is strapless and all black is what Dee P. wishes. Maureen G. claims that The One purchase would be either a casual, classic dress with sleeves or a pair of beautifully shaped and versatile dress trousers. Nancy G. would get a luxurious dusterjacket that would make a dramatic statement. What would your One Thing be? What in your closet will you kiss goodbye forever this season? Most of us have items that we should say goodbye to and move on, what are they? Apparently, we’re not in love any longer with all the baggy and oversized pieces that we were hiding behind for way too long. Like Lauren F. we want to remove the clothes that are too big so we won’t grow into them. Shapeless, long jackets, gigantic T-shirts, and trendy styles from decades ago like the silk, floral, kimono-style wrap sweater in Tracy E.’s closet – I can’t even imagine that one! We don’t want Continued on next page... March/April 2021

SPL FASHION uncomfortable shoes – that’s definitely one item to kiss goodbye forever, and everything that doesn’t fit. Oh, one more – Solange G. fell out of love with her bright colored purses! What’s the most important accessory you can’t leave home without? Right now, Pamela R. and I would place a fashionable and functional mask as the most essential fashion accessory. Many of us love our sunglasses and wouldn’t leave the house without them. We also are strongly attached to our jewelry, earrings are the leaders here from hoops like Beverly W., and simple studs that are Tammy P’s favorites. How about red lipstick? I know that Debbie R. would not be seen without it, just like Barbara P. would feel out of place without her beautiful rings. I’m just surprised that nobody mentioned a handbag! Ladies, what to carry your phone in?
What is your favorite style? How complicated can it be to describe our personal style? We are juggling with a collection of words to describe our preferences, but the truth is we have many choices, we broke many barriers, removed many rules. Good for us! Richie S.: “Just unusual things is my style, not something off the racks at retail stores that everyone will have. That is why I like boutiques.” Lauren F.: “Hip and edgy.” Pamela R.: “Clean lined basic for daily and something eye catching for evening.” Dee P.: “Sophisticated glamour.” Christine H.: “I love classic tailored pieces, and funky creative necklines and collars.” Solange G.: “I like to consider myself pretty laid back but stylish. I have always clicked with the Californian style (denim bottoms and a neutral-colored top, sometimes loose fitting) or the New York style (black everything, minimal look). As long as the accessories are up to par, and the shoes make the outfit, I am good to go.”
Who is your inspirational fashion icon? I’m happy to know that we are independently thinking women and creating our own style, but we do admire certain people in the spotlight who inspire us and sometimes take us out of our boxes. Most mentioned was Jennifer Lopez and her impeccable sense of style. Then we have an array of fashion icons from Maria Callas, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren to Halle Berry, Victoria Beckham, Salma Hayek, Zendaya, Gal Gadot and Moira Rose. I’d have to agree with all the above, throwing into the collection Sarah Jessica Parker.

Earth Day is every day at Brick Street Farms PHOTOS/BRICK STREET FARMS
Shannon O’Malley and Brad Doyle are proud founders of Brick Street Farms, a hydroponic garden in downtown St. Pete that sells organic greens to residents, restaurants and retailers, including Publix.
BY KELI SIPPERLEY First came love. Then came marriage. Then came a farm in a St. Petersburg parking lot. For Shannon O’Malley and Brad Doyle, owners of Brick Street Farms, the years since running into each other on Christmas morning in 2011 have been fruitful. The couple have come a long way since purchasing the rundown, former junkyard in the heart of the Grand Central arts and warehouse district shortly after they married in 2015. What started with a home-based experiment in hydroponic growing has bloomed into a multifaceted urban farming operation, managing the equivalent of 48 acres of farmland inside upcycled, climate-controlled shipping containers, as well as the food’s multiple distribution channels. Brick Street’s wash-free, certified non-GMO kale, lettuce, and other greens are grown year-round, without pesticides, in a nutrientdense water solution. To get the highest-quality results, the company even designs and builds its own equipment. Hydroponic growing is an intricate process of continual trial and error, Doyle said, and despite the thriving business they’ve cultivated, the learning never stops. “We are still figuring it out,” he admits. “The science is constantly evolving with new research.” The couple is in constant problem-solving mode, and no two days are ever the same. “Both of us can be everything from farmer to CEO to mentor to plumber in one day,” the couple noted. Still, the

HOME & GARDEN daily challenges are offset by the milestones the company reaches and the rewards it reaps. But in early 2020, a potentially catastrophic problem arose. As restrictions were implemented to quell the spread of COVID-19, Brick Street Farms felt the effects immediately. “We lost our restaurant and resort wholesale business pretty much overnight,” O’Malley said. “It was a terrifying moment as business owners, we weren’t sure if we would be able to keep the business going for a minute.” What they did next would determine if they’d sink or swim. A quickly formed distribution partnership with Publix kept the company afloat, O’Malley said. There are now four types of Brick Street lettuce available at 272 Publix stores, with butterhead clam shells proving the most popular variation. “We also pivoted to making online shopping and curbside pickup available and relaunched our
membership program,” O’Malley said. Memberships are offered at three price levels, providing discounts on purchases, first dibs on greens, unlimited reverse-osmosis water, and other perks. The program has grown by more than 200 members since its relaunch, she added. The company isn’t just focused on its own growth, though. Brick Street also supports other St. Petersburg businesses by carrying local makers’ products in the Brick Street Market and online shop. And when they’re not hard at work, Doyle and O’Malley are still all about everything that makes St. Pete such a vibrant scene, from its sunny parks to its palate pleasers. “We love trying new restaurants, obviously, and seeing what our local chefs are cooking up, especially when they’re using our products,” Doyle said. And at the end of a stressful day, you can often find him unwinding with “a few sneaky beers” at one of the city’s local breweries, he added.

The Deuces Food Hall Aims to Revive Casino, Community Listen closely when you walk into Historic Manhattan Casino and you can still hear it: Louis Armstrong blaring his trumpet, Duke Ellington tickling the ivories and Nat “King” Cole caressing the lyrics of an enchanting ballad.
how he died. “I will make sure that brightness that Vincent brought to everything he ever did continues to shine just as bright in the Manhattan Casino,” Farias said. “I can think of no better way of honoring my friend.” The food hall will be home to varied concepts operating together under a single roof. Upstart restaurateurs will add their own unique aura of flavors, ranging from barbecue to Jamaican cuisine to Louisiana-style entrees.
The legend of the casino’s most famous performers lives on in the walls of this landmark venue in south St. Petersburg. Now Mario Farias and the Callaloo Group will look to make sure the memory of their most famous partner lives on in the latest reformation of the historic site. The group’s plans to launch a soft opening of a re-imagined food hall this month was poised to be another significant accomplishment in the life of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Vincent Jackson, a visible member of the Callaloo Group and a pantheon in the community. Farias and the other partners will now look to move forward without Jackson, who was found dead in a Brandon hotel in February. In the days after Jackson’s death, the coroner had yet to determine the cause. However, Farias said the food hall, dubbed 22 South, will be just one way he’ll look to celebrate how Jackson lived, not
But to ensure harmony, Farias says, they will not only lend serving, table bussing and dishwashing support to the chefs operating in a revamped 2,800-square foot kitchen, but he will hire managers to help the food hall operate in concert. “We’ll have a conductor to make them sound like a symphony,” Farias said. “We want to ensure we have excellent service, which is so important.” Having the “conductor” in place to guide the varied operators reflects the partnership’s desire for an orchestrated effort. Farias said their first-hand research of other food halls found that many operated more like food courts, with an off-key delivery of orders. “We would order from the same menu, but the food would come at different times,” Farias said. “It shouldn’t work that way.”

SPL LIVING Along with the modernized kitchen will come an updated ambience with more space between tables, increased lighting and warmer colors. There’ll also be a chef’s counter where the different restaurants can conduct specialty service and patrons can peek into the kitchen. That has to be welcome news to the concepts that have signed on to be in the food hall: William Gravely’s barbecue, Three Generations gourmet offerings and Irie Mon Jamaican Grill. “The story behind each one of these people makes it even greater,” Farias said. “These are the next generation of restaurants in St. Petersburg.” In addition to the food hall, the Callaloo Group’s latest plan will feature other additions, including an extension of Rising Tide Innovation Center, a downtown co-work space. Their members will benefit from Deuces Cafe, a coffee bar with its own special roasted blend and fresh baked goods. The Manhattan Casino will also continue to host a weekly fresh market on Tuesdays, and it will sustain event space for social events and business meetings. If all goes as planned, the new concept will help former food truck operators and burgeoning restaurateurs establish their concepts before moving on to independent operations in the neighborhood. It’s an approach Farias says they will model after La Cocina, San Francisco’s successful community kitchen incubator. The rebirth of the city-owned Manhattan Casino began in earnest in 2005 with a $2.8 million renovation, but promising projects and restaurants have yet to bring it to full fruition. Sylvia’s Soul Food occupied the first floor from 2013-2016 but it ran out of steam. After
winning city approval over other development groups, Farias and his group took over the revival and launched Callaloo, a restaurant that combined Southern and Caribbean entrees. But after a criticallyacclaimed start, Farias said that concept began to “die down” just before the pandemic. On a 5-3 vote, the St. Petersburg City Council approved the tweaks last August, but not without some stern questions. Clearly, the council and the community are watching closely to see if the new concept can succeed while fueling the Manhattan’s cultural connections to The Deuces’ glory days and improving the lives of residents. Despite the challenges, Farias said he and his partners — local pastor Greg Murray and Rising Tides owners Leigh Fletcher and Tina Fischer — remain committed to succeeding in the once legendary dance hall and social hub. “We still believe, and not only do we believe, but we’re also putting our money where our mouths are,” said Farias, who grew up in South St. Petersburg and professes a personal passion for the area. “There are a lot of great partners and organizations working to bring that spirit back to The Deuces. We’re just a small cog in a machine that’s already working to revive the area.” Ernest Hooper is the vice president of communications for the United Way Suncoast, and a former Tampa Bay Times columnist. Perhaps you’ve heard about the development plans for the Tropicana Field site (or perhaps you’ve been living in a cave)? What to do with 86 acres of highly desirable publicly-owned land in downtown St. Pete has been a hotly debated issue in recent years. Indeed, the site represents a development opportunity unlike any other in the Southeast. The burning question is will the Tampa Bay Rays stay, or will they go?
