WELCOME TO SPL
Home For The Holidays It’s hard to believe that we are moving into the holiday season already. Time flies, as many say, but this year, time has been flying on the wings of a global pandemic the likes of which this generation has never seen – and could never believe possible. The coronavirus in Florida as we go to print is on the upswing, which means we must remain vigilant to keep our families safe. It certainly looks different in St. Petersburg this holiday season. We have no holiday parades or Christmas tree lightings or performances of the Master Chorale or the Nutcracker to write about. However, things are slowly – albeit cautiously -- coming back. I am glad to report that the beloved First Night St. Petersburg, the city’s popular downtown New Year’s Eve celebration, is working hard to present an entertaining evening of music, art and interactive fun virtually from the comfort of your own living room. Be sure to read “And the Curtain Rises… (Finally)” by arts writer Cindy Stovall for an overview of how performing arts groups such as American Stage, freeFall Theatre, Florida Orchestra and others, are re-imagining their fall season with adjustments for safety. The show must go on for our beloved arts organizations in St. Pete, and we are ever so grateful. Many people are adjusting their usual holiday routines, staying close to home and downsizing family gatherings and parties. We wondered how people of various nationalities and ethnic backgrounds would be celebrating this year and found that many are focusing on their cultural traditions to keep them grounded in these tumultuous times. Take a look at our “Holiday Traditions Around the World” story to learn how your neighbors are coping. Finally, as we mark the end of the year, we wish to thank our advertisers who have pulled this magazine and our faithful community of readers through this year. We know it has not been an easy year, financially and emotionally, but rest assured that we are St. Pete Strong and will continue to support you.

SPL HEALTH
Dye or Not to Dye! Recently a client who is on hair restoration protocol asked if she can go ahead and color her hair as scheduled. Before I replied, I checked her Cell Wellbeing Report we recently ran to ensure we avoid or minimize the negative effects of chemical treatment while we are regrowing her hair. Unfortunately, her report showed she is deficient in amino acids called cysteine and glutamine. What was my answer? Keep reading… Human hair has a complicated chemical composition: protein, water, lipids, and trace elements. Keratin proteins consist of 16 amino acids and cysteine is the main one. Cysteine, high in sulfur, is responsible for hair strength and durability, therefore it plays a crucial role in hair health. Glutamine is a shuttle of sulfur for cysteine. As you can see, missing one element of the structure will make hair brittle. Especially under chemical or mechanical stress. Problems with hair and scalp, like different types of alopecia (hair loss) are not a disease, but signs and symptoms of disbalance deep down in the body. It should be a signal to check your health closely. Our hair can be an amazing source of information. Hair follicles are the live parts of your hair. By analyzing just four hair shafts with their follicles, we can identify what micro- or macro- nutrient deficiencies your body has, such as vitamins, minerals, amino and fatty acids. Also we can see if the client has mold, bacteria, viral or parasitic toxicity, heavy metal loads, what type of food the body is intolerant to and much more essential information. This allows us to optimize immunity, support gut function, improve health of hair, skin, nails and the rest of the organs and systems. Based on the results of this non-invasive test, in 20 minutes we can build a custom plan to show you how to optimize overall health and wellbeing. My answer to my client was: “Yes, you can color your hair while in hair restoration protocol. However, before making an appointment at a hair salon, consider restoring your cysteine and glutamine levels with an appropriate food plan and/or supplementation to minimize potential damage that may occur.” Hair is a very distinctive personal feature playing a major role in self-perception. It is one of the physical features that can be easily changed in length, shape, and color. The chemical styling process can be done safely with the help of modern technology and science, like a Cell Wellbeing Hair Report. ADVERTORIAL
Ladies: Did over-the-counter hair restoration not work for you? We have the solution! Our non-surgical natural regrowth strategy can provide results in as little as 30 days.

“Dalí seems to intersect in his interests and life with nearly every significant cultural movement, event or person of our era – Van Gogh is no exception,” said Dr. Hank Hine, executive director of The Dalí Museum. “Van Gogh and Dalí shared a passion for landscape and the portal it provides to a hidden world. A glimpse of Van Gogh’s world will be transformed onto the walls and floors of our gallery, providing a dramatic and awe-inspired experience for our audience.” Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art. Van Gogh grew up in a religious family and struggled with mental illness; mystery surrounds the circumstances that led to his cutting off his own ear and to his suicide at the age of 37. His artwork is celebrated for its intense color and the pioneering use of a technique known as impasto. Van Gogh Alive continues Nov. 21 – April 11; for admission prices and hours go to www.thedali.org or call (727) 823-3767.

The Time is Right for Comfort Food

Banana Pudding
BY MARCIA BIGGS It’s been a rough year. Between the continuing pandemic and political mayhem, travel cancellations, sports separation anxiety, and kids that rarely leave the house, is it any wonder that dining out has taken on a new meaning? Have you found yourself almost giddy with excitement when you decide to treat yourself to brunch, or lunch or dinner at a restaurant? Venturing out for a meal should not be cause for anxiety. One thing that most restaurants continue to strive for no matter where we stand with COVID is safety for all patrons and workers, which means masks continue to be worn and diners separated. Choosing a spot with wide open space is at the top of my list when selecting a restaurant and Dr. BBQ fits the bill nicely with its two-story 9,000 square feet of cavernous dining space allowing plenty of room to spread out. A breezy outdoor balcony bar that looks out on the Trop and Central Avenue’s bustling Edge District is also perfect for drinks. Comfort food is back and back big, and we found it during a leisurely Sunday lunch that allowed my companion and I to kick back and relax with some creative ‘cue. The BBQ man himself, Ray Lampe, was on hand to greet and chat up diners. He’s often there on weekends to welcome folks and pose for photos, happy to recommend menu items and talk about his recipes and grilling. They don’t have Sunday brunch, per se, he told us since the regular menu items are always in demand. “We’ve been open two years now, and we finally feel like we’ve hit our stride,” he said proudly. “The smoker is at the heart of the restaurant and the heart of the menu.” Indeed, with two in-house

smokers working round-the-clock, Dr. BBQ has mastered the art of perfectly smoked meats from chicken and ribs, to pork belly and brisket. Earlier this year when the restaurant was closed to diners, they did a brisk business of carry-out meats by the pound and still do, Lampe told us. (Take note, holiday cooks, you could make this a BBQ Christmas.) The menu is a smorgasbord of grilled and smoked meats and sides. Six house barbecue sauces are yours for the asking, although hardly needed. A good place to start for first-timers is the Texas Two-Step. Select from two meats – Pulled Chicken, Smoked Turkey, Sliced Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sliced Pastrami, Pork Belly or Sausage -- and two house sides of your choosing. We tried the Smoked Turkey, thick slabs of moist and perfectly smoked bird, and the house-cured and smoked Pastrami. Add on a side of the Tai Pei Sweet Corn, whole ears of fire-roasted corn basted in honey-Siracha aioli, to knock your socks off. The St. Louis Ribs are meaty and juicy, slathered with a sweet and spicy sauce. A variety of sandwiches are mighty tempting, too, including a perfectly seasoned sliced brisket topped with melted pepper-jack cheese on a toasted baguette. Your mouth will sing with flavor when you sink your teeth into the Korean-inspired Sticky Ribs dusted with sesame seeds and green onion. Tacos with a choice of meats on flour or corn tortillas and a hefty Frito Pie covered in chili, queso and jalapenos are great for sharing. There are plenty of offerings for the non-meat eater here

as well, including a three-bean Meatless Chili, Beyond Tacos, and four salads. Signature sides include the Smashed Potato, Jack Daniels BBQ Beans and Sandi’s Bacon Blue Cheese Slaw. You can also pick from Collard Greens, Mac N’Cheese and a Cowboy Caviar of roasted corn, black beans, tomatoes, Kimchi Fries and Fried Avocado Wedges. Not up for a lotta eatin’? It’s worth a trip just to share one of the
humongous, sinfully tempting Southern desserts like the Epic Peanut Butter Pie, the perfect-for-two Banana Pudding Parfait or the Horse Soldier Bourbon Chocolate Cake. A massive bar in the main dining area is perfect for hanging out with lots of space and on Sundays you can watch the games projected on the brick wall. Take a stroll upstairs, admire the collection of barbecue trophies, and check out the balcony bar. You’ll feel right at home and maybe, just maybe, you won’t think about the woes of the world for a few hours. Heavenly!

Take a Tri p with Wines
from Around the World
BY WILL HOWARD Whether you’re giving a bottle as a gift, choosing something for a holiday meal, or celebrating with friends and family, wine is a necessity during the holidays. Choosing wine for a holiday meal or gift can be a lot of fun. As always, rule number one is to drink what you like. There’s no need to overcomplicate your wine choice for a meal because the wine does not necessarily have to be the star of the show, but it should enhance the experience. The wine choices should be balanced (not too sweet, tannic, oaky, or acidic), easily paired with a variety of food, and enjoyed by everyone partaking in the festivities. Here are my choices for wines from around the world this holiday season: Domaine Serene, Evenstad Reserve, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon Evenstad Reserve is a benchmark for American pinot noir. This wine is consistently great from vintage to vintage and easily paired with food. Grace and Ken Evenstad are hands-on in every step of making their wines, with family and philanthropy as cornerstones to their success. Dal Forno Romano, Valpolicella Superiore, Veneto, Italy - The tedious method and attention to detail in creating this wine delivers an experience in every bottle. The wine shows bold and concentrated dark cherry, blackberry, and plum that leads into a lengthy and smooth finish. It is safe to say that the Dal Forno family has mastered Valpolicella because I don’t think it gets better than this. Torbreck, The Steading, GSM, Barossa, Australia - Torbreck is guardian to many of the most important vines in South Australia. Some of the vines producing this wine date back to the 1880s and
18

are still yielding excellent fruit. This wine balances the red fruit aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, and raspberry with an earthy mid-palette and silky smooth finish. Chateau Ormes de Pez, St. Estephe, Bordeaux, France - Jean-Michel Cazes, owner of Chateau Lynch-Bages, has been able to utilize the skills, technique, and resources from his Grand Cru Pauillac Chateau to offer one of the best values of the left bank of Bordeaux in Ormes de Pez. The blend is nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine offers soft tannins, spice, dark fruit, and a savory meaty finish. Bodega Garzon, Single Vineyard Albarino, Uruguay - If you love Albarino, then you have to try this one. This is a palate coating, full bodied, white wine with flavors of tropical fruit, nutmeg, and white pepper. The wine is made on a beautiful, state of the art winery on the coast of Uruguay. Bruno Giacosa, Roero Arneis, Piemonte, Italy - Bruno Giacosa was one of the world’s greatest winemakers. He is partially credited with saving the Arneis varietal in the 1960s and I’m really glad he did. His daughter, Bruna, now operates the family business. This wine is as clean and precise as they come. There is lemon and peach on the nose and mouth watering minerality through the finish. Pahlmeyer, Jayson, Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Pahlmeyer is synonymous with great Chardonnay and this is no exception. The wine is dense and creamy with flavors of pear, tangerine, and baked apple. The flavors finish with a hint of caramel that keeps you coming back for more. Will Howard is Sommelier at Rococo Steak in St. Petersburg.

Kenwood Gables Bed and Breakfast PHOTOS/LISA PRESNAIL www.presnail.com
Great Room BY MARCIA BIGGS When Jayson and Reymond Lazaro dream, they dream big. With the opening of the Kenwood Gables Bed and Breakfast last fall, the couple’s dream came true. But renovating the sprawling historic Tudor Revival home became a road paved with ups and downs that continued over 3 1/2 years. After spending the year searching, the couple purchased the fivebedroom house in late 2016. Reymond spotted it for sale on the internet, its magnificent high-ceilinged Great Room with ornate carvings above the fireplace catching his eye. Jayson grew up in Pinellas County so was familiar with St. Pete, but Kenwood in those days was not a desirable neighborhood. He was amazed to see the transformation two decades later. Taking a leap of faith, the couple packed up their New York condo and headed to St. Pete to begin their new life as owners of a historic bed and breakfast. And an adventure it became. Their goal
20

for the home was to create comfortable elegance, each room with its own individual character. “The home had been renovated and was turn-key ready for a family,” said Jayson, “but we needed to do a lot more renovation and restoration to bring it up to code for a bed and breakfast. I was a fashion designer in New York for the better part of 25 years. Reymond is the experienced one as far as
SPL LIVING hospitality and sales go. He lived in Havana, Cuba, where he owned and operated a B&B or ‘casa particular.’ ” The next couple years would be filled with repairing and restoring stucco throughout the house to make it similar to the 1920s style, installing a proper fire alarm and sprinkler systems, removing carpeting on the second and third floors and installing wood floors, renovating the stairwell, baseboard and trim, and restoring the cypress in the great room and porch. In the backyard, they added a pool, a pergola and a lounge deck and lush landscaping. Paperwork, inspections, and approvals seemed to be never-ending. “I did extensive research on Tudor Revival home color palettes,” said Jayson. “Most of them were quite dark, but we kept going back to a really deep blue and decided to go with that color since the Great Room is so large and has so much light.” They worked closely with a contractor to make sure all renovations were done to the specifications and design plan. Reymond was trained in Cuba as a carpenter, so took pride in restoring the woodwork trim and other details throughout the house.
The Lazaros have had great fun furnishing the home, scouring consignment shops, thrift stores, salvage yards and home furnishing stores. Some items, like the porch rocking chairs, a wardrobe and cathedral bed they restored themselves. Reymond’s favorite room is the Brewton Vintage Room. It’s filled with an eclectic mix of hand-picked furnishings including artwork from Cuba. Jayson’s favorite room is the Great Room with it high ceiling and welcoming fireplace. They officially welcomed their first guests last November, anticipating a busy spring and summer. The pandemic has created a bit of anxiety, Jayson admits, with most guests cancelling. They feel fortunate to have received several grants for small business owners, including one from the city’s Fighting Chance Fund, to help them survive the summer months. And hope continues to grow. “We feel this is a new chapter in our lives,” says Jayson. “We love St. Pete and we both have family in the state. We could not have done this without all their support, encouragement and love.” Continued next page

SPL LIVING
A pool, lounge area and suite-side deck greet guests at Kenwood Gable Bed and Breakfast.
About the House Located in the Historic Kenwood neighborhood at 2801 7th Avenue N., the Tudor Revival home was built in the early 1930s as a seven-room house. Kenwood Gables’ first owner, Mrs. Grace Brewton, moved to St. Petersburg from Washington, D.C. in 1920 and was credited with contributing to Kenwood’s development during the 1920s. Mrs. Brewton undertook some renovations and added a large room, quite probably the Great Room, adding more bathrooms and enlarging the kitchen throughout the years. She lived there until her death in 1962. The property had at least six owners from then until Jayson and Reymond Lazaro bought it in December 2016. Records indicate since 1962, the residence was converted into apartments, fell into disrepair and underwent remodeling including the addition of two ground floor master suites. The Kenwood Gables B&B received recognitions in 2019 for Best Preservation by Preserve the Burg, a preservation society that honors private homeowners and business owners for preserving the character and construction of a building. In September, the Lazaros were recognized with a Best Business Award by the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association. The bed and breakfast offers five guest rooms including two master suites on the main floor, both with French doors opening onto a poolside deck, and three vintage rooms on the second floor.

The Nomad Suite is a colorful, cheerful poolside suite in rich jewel tones decorated with ornate textiles and art drawn upon the exotic bazaars of north Africa and the markets of India, Thailand and Vietnam. The Castaway Suite, in contrast, is tranquil and light, an oasis of white-washed coastal chic with a king-size poster bed and soaking tub. The Astoria Room reflects on the New York Queens neighborhood where Jayson lived; it’s a cozy room with design books, magazines, photos and artwork and other fashion mementos from his career. Specializing in Clinical Research and Surgical Oncology
Dr. Jinny Gunn was born and raised in Florida, and family has always been an important and influential part of her life. Following in her Grandfather’s footsteps, Dr. Gunn served in the U.S. Navy, then went on to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego. She then returned to Florida where she received her medical degree from Florida International University in Miami, and completed her general surgery residency at May Clinic Florida in Jacksonville. At the Mayo Clinic, her last year of training was primarily focused on surgical oncology and breast disease. After watching her Aunt fight a long and strenuous battle with breast cancer, Dr. Gunn knew she wanted to specialize in breast care throughout her career, in order to help other women in similar positions. She says that one of the things that sets her apart from others in the field is that she is a female, and can relate to her patients on an entirely different level than her male colleagues. From the time a patient walks into a consultation with Dr. Gunn, they feel at ease, despite what they may be going through. Patients are provided with a guidebook, that has been crafted specifically for them, which directs patients to local resources for wigs, curated massages, and how to talk to their families about cancer.

Palm Beach Panache at the Brazilian Court Hotel
BY BETH ANN DRAKE With a pedigreed history dating back to the 1920’s, the Brazilian Court Hotel has long been known as a discreet enclave for the rich and famous. Celebrity guests date back to Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo and Marjorie Merriweather Post. Known to locals as a “home away from home,” the hotel has served as an overflow for guests of local families, and was a favorite of the Kennedy clan. Cloistered amid lushly landscaped courtyards, the hotel’s Old World charm is steps away from the ocean as well as storied Worth Avenue. The moment you arrive, the feeling of a deep rooted and fabled history is palpable. Stone floors feature burgundy marbling which is the result of hundreds of years of grape juices flowing down to the limestone beneath French vineyards. The cloistered courtyard was where Cary Grant regularly danced the night away with a star in his arms. And today guests can enjoy their own experience in suites with names such as Bergman, Bogart, Astaire, Hepburn and Brando. The original architecture was designed by Rosario Candela, a

famous New York architect who dared to create a classic SpanishMediterranean hotel that stood out from the traditional projects of Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner. In 1936, Maurice Fatio added the south wing as well as the now famous courtyard, and the hotel became the epicenter of Palm Beach society. In 2008, 80 rooms and suites were re-designed with Candela’s vision of simple elegance in mind. A recent refreshment in 2019 added custom wisteria panels as well as lush green velvet and leather that complement marble and brass accents. White linens and pops of color brighten the motif. Each room features a curated collection of black and white photography by renowned photographer Terry O’Neill. Other luxuries include ultra-air bathtubs, as well as flat screen TVs and select rooms feature a private terrace that opens to secret gardens.

Another favorite is the Roasted Beet Salad, with chevre, walnut and rye croutons. The Charcuterie Board features a delectable variety of pates and cured meats that melt in your mouth. You Can Still Make the Holidays Special BY MEGAN SIMONS May you live in interesting times, as my grandma used to say, and ironically we are in the most challenging holiday season in our generation. But I am sure of one thing – the holidays are not canceled -we all will celebrate. The way and nature of our celebrations may be altered, the company we are comfortable with may be missing, but we will still celebrate. It is our right, it is our tradition, it is our privilege and fun. So much was taken from us this year, we were deprived of our normal ways of living in so many ways, but we can still make this holiday season special. So, let us leave behind the countless casual days and let us celebrate in style. Even if you’re planning to spend the days of Thanksgiving or Christmas or Hanukkah in the deep woods of North Carolina with just your significant other and an intimate dinner for two, make it merry, make it festive, make it memorable. Create an evening full of meaningful moments -who said you cannot have a glamorous candlelight

dinner in a full-length gown and tuxedo in the privacy of your own home? A gown is not in your plans? Well, I hope I got your attention. One of the ways to celebrate as safe as possible is to have an outdoor party or dinner -- after all we live in Florida and we can use the beautiful weather to our benefit. In an al fresco gathering, nothing says you’re fierce more than a red jumpsuit adorned with shiny gold and bravely bold jewels. Not only fashionable but extremely versatile, great red head to toe is one of those things that will remain in our wardrobes forever. Do you Zoom? Hold a virtual cocktail party online with your friends and family prior to dinner when nothing will make a better statement than a daring leopard print tunic over black pants. If you don’t have that animal daring desire, go feminine or with sparkles, feathers or chiffon. Make it exciting with shiny fabrics and embellishment. Pearls and rhinestones can make casual jeans fun and festive. Designers and celebrities are on board, having figured out the proper way to style these ordinary pieces and transfer them into endless versions of glam. Then suddenly you feel like you can conquer the world on this holiday season. Megan Simons is owner of Pippa Pelure, a fine fashion boutique in downtown St. Petersburg. MFA Debuts New Look, New Collection Works A big change awaits visitors to the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg. The original 12,000-square-foot galleries in the museum’s 1965 building have been fully renovated as part of a major project undertaken during the months of the museum closedown. The 18 galleries not only present modified layouts with more intimate spaces, but some 100 works of art previously not on view are making their debut, many for the first time or returning after several years in art storage. The “reimagining” of the galleries involved months of discussions and planning with museum curators. The goal, envisioned by MFA Executive Director and CEO Kristen A. Shepherd, was to transform the flow and visitor experience. “We are tremendously excited for visitors to rediscover the Museum of Fine Arts,” Shepherd said. “With major acquisitions in recent years, it was the right moment for us to showcase our important and evolving collection, which has been completely reinstalled to reimagine how we tell the story of art.” The project was originally planned to begin in summer, however when the MFA temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 crisis, it
was decided to accelerate the renovation schedule and do the work concurrently rather than in phases. In addition, visitors may hear the sound of music while perusing the museum. The MFA is launching Resonance, a new program that explores the relationship between sound and visual art. A collaboration with The Florida Orchestra will bring archival recorded music selections to be played in specific galleries throughout the day. For example, you can enjoy a bit of 17th century composer Antonio Vivaldi in the galleries dedicated to the Baroque Period. Two gallery spaces dedicated to special exhibitions curated from the MFA Collection: Explore the Vaults: Abstraction and the American Scene and Working Point: Contemporary Glass from the MFA Collection. Explore the Vaults present a changing series of rarely seen and light-sensitive works from the MFA collection. Working Point features contemporary glass from the collection in a range of techniques that include cast and blown processes. Admission tickets must be reserved online for timed entry in accordance with the museum’s COVID safety measures. mfastpete.org

Holiday Traditions From Around the World St. Pet e Life Holidays
This holiday season, more than ever, many will rely on their heritage and traditional customs to bring a sense of peace and continuity. We asked a cross-section of area residents from different ethnic backgrounds how they plan to spend the holidays. While many will be missing loved ones due to travel restrictions and safety precautions, they say the pleasures of familiar foods and rituals from their youth will pull them through.

Theresa Scott / Italian Throwdown / Feast of the Seven Fishes For most Italian Americans, Christmas Eve is celebrated as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. It’s the focus of the holiday season, a time for family and friends to gather to celebrate their regional heritage and the riches of the sea. For Theresa Scott (formerly Morelli), though, it’s her annual “Italian Throwdown” on the first Saturday of December that kicks off the holiday season. This casual and very large gathering of friends and family keeps Theresa busy in the kitchen preparing Italian specialties such as eggplant parmesan, Stromboli, sausage and pepper, Chicken Vesuvius with artichokes, stewed rice balls stuffed with spinach and cheese, an array of cookies, tarts, zeppole, and her famous lemon olive oil cake with fresh rosemary. Just a few weeks later, she’ll be

at it again, but this time preparing fish dishes for up to 20 family members for the Feast of the Seven Fishes. For this, she insists it be a properly plated and seated affair. Planning, prepping, cooking and baking – but it’s all a labor of love. “My family is from Sicily and I am a true Italian cook,” she admits. “I make everything from scratch. It’s how you preserve the old way of doing things. The preparing and serving of food speaks to simple pleasures.” Despite being mom to 5-year-old twins Noah and Bella and holding down a job as a business strategist, Theresa revels in the customs and traditions of her Catholic Italian heritage, knowing that her
SPL HOLIDAYS children will be raised to appreciate the family bonds that are such an important part of their ancestry. She and husband Edward cherish the holidays, which put family first. “We follow all the religious traditions, too, we go to church, sing holiday songs. When we do gift-giving, we remind the children of the notion that the Three Kings brought gifts to Baby Jesus and it’s more about giving than receiving. For us, holidays are a time to be grateful and to celebrate our blessings.” The Feast of Seven Fishes The ancient Italian tradition of The Feast of Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve dates from the Roman Catholic custom of abstinence from meat and dairy products on the eve of certain holidays, including Christmas. In the early 1900s, when the official Feast of the Seven Fishes first emerged, Italian-American families rekindled
This year, due to the pandemic, Theresa admits the Italian Throwdown and Feast of the Seven Fishes will be smaller, more intimate gatherings. Still she plans on cooking and baking her heart out with all the traditional foods. “For me, food is love,” she says. “It’s a lot of work, but I do it out of service and out of love for my family. It’s for the joy of seeing everyone sitting around the table together – which we just don’t do anymore.”
the Old Country’s Christmas Eve tradition by preparing a sevencourse seafood meal that both made them feel close to their homes, while celebrating the sea, a major connection in Italy. Typically, the family gathers around a feast of seven different seafood dishes or one or two different types of fish prepared in seven different ways.
Tina Dyer / Chinese New Year Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival and Lunar New Year is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year according to the Chinese calendar.
Tina Dyer vividly remembers her Taiwanese mother bringing her and her brothers to the Chinese New Year celebrations every year in downtown Salt Lake City. The colorful dragons dancers, bright lanterns, steaming fried foods, drumming, dancing and fireworks all immersed her in another world. Although they lived in a small Utah town, her mother introduced her children to the Chinese customs and traditions of this most important lunar holiday. Flash forward to 1995, Dyer was married and living in St. Petersburg with two children. “I started thinking that I wanted my kids to know that side of my life. I hadn’t nurtured the Asian part of our background,” she said. So she began celebrating the Chinese New Year every February in her home to honor her culture and instill the fundamental traditions in her children. She continues to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but now her family gathering is much larger.
The first tradition of the new year, she said, is to prepare with a thorough house cleaning. “I make sure to do this,” she says. The custom is meant to sweep away ill-fortune and make way for incoming luck. Then the cooking begins – egg rolls, dumplings, a long noodle dish for longevity and a fish dish. Dyer presents a red envelope with money to her children, the red keeps the evil spirits away and the money represents good fortune. On the day of Chinese New Year, Dyer dresses in traditional Chinese silk and welcomes her grown children and their partners, her partner Scott Kempfhall, and assorted close friends for a festive family dinner. The meal ends with fortune cookies and tea, of course. In addition to Chinese New Year, Dyer celebrates all the traditional American holidays (she is half American). “It’s pretty busy around my house for a couple months,” she admits. “We do Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year.” But she doesn’t seem to mind one bit.

Adeline and Neville Christmas / A French Christmas Coming to the United States from France to live six years ago would be a transition, Adeline Christmas knew. She and husband Neville landed in Tampa Bay, and soon two children came along. Their French heritage remains strong, and the parents did not want Gabrielle, 5, and Armand, 3, to lose it. They enrolled the young ones in the French American School of Tampa Bay, where they are taught in French, and they continue the cultural traditions of the Christmas season, as well. Growing up in a small town near Toulouse, Adeline’s family celebrated Christmas as any French family would – gathering on Christmas Eve for a spread heavy in seafood starting with foie gras and a champagne toast followed by oysters, shrimp, snails, and fish and finishing with delectable French pastries and chocolates.
On Christmas Day, they would roast a goose or duck. “Nobody eats turkey in France,” she remarks. Instead of stocking gifts, the French would place a pair of slippers for each person under the Christmas tree “to let Santa know how many people lived in the house.” This year, with international quarantines, no relatives will be visiting and Adeline admits she will miss her French family, particularly now. Still, she and Neville plan to carry on the French traditions of seafood on Christmas Eve and slippers under a Christmas tree. As far as Thanksgiving, it’s a non-holiday for the Christmas family. “In the United States, people cook big dinners for the holidays, but we are French,” Adeline says. “We cook all the time for no reason at all!”
Natasha Kane / Ukrainian Christmas Born in Moldova, Ukraine, Natasha Kane’s family was at the center of her life growing up. “Ukrainians are very family-oriented,” she said. “Most families stay in the same region, and holiday customs are very important to keeping traditions going.” In Eastern Ukraine where she was raised, the Christian Orthodox faith is prevalent and they celebrate Christmas on January 7, said Kane. But Christmas Eve, January 6, is the most important tradition. They fast all day as they wait for the “first star,” at which time the dinner will commence. “The dishes are very important and signify different things,” explains Kane. “We start with the kutya, a holy food made of wheat grains and honey, poppy seeds and walnuts.” It represents the union of the

living with their ancestors. Twelve dishes are served in honor of the 12 apostles with no meat or dairy products. They include sauerkraut, pierogi, baked fish, salads, pilaf and vegetables and fruit. On January 7, the family gathers again for a dinner that includes stuffed duck and kolach bread, a round loaf of bread with a burning candle in the center as the centerpiece. Caroles are sung after dinner, said Kane, and visits are made to godparents, where treats or small gifts are shared. Kane is grateful her two grown daughters live nearby so she can continue to share Ukrainian Christmas with them, and her husband. They typically don’t do much on December 25, she says.

Carla Bristol / Kwanzaa First Night When Carla Bristol opened Gallerie 909 in the Deuces area of downtown St. Pete in 2014, with its focus on African American and South American fashion and art, she never realized it was destined to become an important part of the community. And she would play an even bigger part. Her little storefront soon became a gathering spot for St. Petersburg’s black community and that year’s Kwanzaa First Night became a pop-up event that established Bristol as organizer and host ever since. A non-religious festival that is fairly new, having begun in 1966, Kwanzaa is a celebration of unity that begins with a First Night on December 26 and continues until the evening of December 31. It celebrates the harvest and is a time to come together to give thanks for community and to honor ancestors. There is joyousness in the First Night gathering, with drumming and storytelling. Kwanzaa calls for baskets filled with fruit and vegetables from the fall harvest to be presented upon
handcrafted African textiles, along with a Unity Cup and a 7-candle kinara that is lit each night. Each candle represents a different principle of life. Bristol has since moved Gallerie 909 to The Pavilion on 49th Street South, a space too small for First Night. Last year, it filled the Pinellas Technical College community room, so this year she is moving it to the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum’s Legacy Garden. She’s getting support from museum and city leaders, and is expecting the largest Kwanzaa First Night crowd ever. “The First Nights here are actually very diverse,” says Bristol. “There are many ethnic backgrounds and all ages, from elders to small children. This year’s First Night will be in a beautiful backdrop with historic significance.”

SPL HOLIDAYS
Elizabeth Gelman and Tom Sivak/ Hannukah It will be a quiet Hannukah at home for Elizabeth Gelman and husband Tom Sivak. Their two grown daughters live outside the state, and the pandemic means they won’t be coming to visit this year. Still, Gelman, who is executive director of the Florida Holocaust Museum, plans to light a menorah. “It’s important to me after so many years to continue the tradition, it’s a reminder of who I am,” she says. She recalled when the children were growing up, teaching them the importance of religious rituals and caring for others. “In the Jewish faith, Hannukah is really a minor holiday,” she explains, “but we always lit the candles, said a blessing, gave small presents.” They
would eat latkes and doughnut holes. And they would celebrate Christmas as the Giving Holiday, adopting a family in need and helping them with food and clothing and toys. “We taught the children to find inspiration and love in Christmas, and to help one another.” In her leadership role at the Holocaust Museum, Gelman has seen the deepest and darkest of sadness and memories. But she still finds hope, even now. “This pandemic is so hard for so many that we start to lose hope,” she says. “To me, Hannukah is a time to remember miracles are possible.”
Hannukah This year, Hanukkah begins the evening of December 10 and continues into the evening of December 18. On each of the eight nights a candle is lit in a special menorah. It’s also a time for giving and receiving small presents on each night. Food fried in oil is traditionally eaten during Hanukkah such as latkes (potato pancakes) and deep fried doughnuts filled with jelly and sprinkled with sugar.
The eight-day festival of Hanukkah commemorates the miraculous victory of the Maccabees and rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah is not the Jewish equivalent of Christmas. In fact, it is a relatively minor Jewish holiday (in religious terms) which has no restrictions whatsoever on work or travel—although many Jewish families and communities get together to celebrate.

Anthony Ivers-Read/ A British Christmas
Big Man’s Voted #1 Mover A glimpse into their story
Big Man’s Moving Company has been a constant in an ever changing real estate market. How can you miss the eye-catching logo of the Big Man with his curling mustache? We decided to do some research and uncover: Who is the Big Man behind the ‘stache? Standing tall at 6’8, Josh Anderson is local giant and entrepreneur of Big Man’s Moving Company. He jokes, “Actually, my wife is the owner, I’m just the mascot!” Brooke Anderson adds, “He calls me the brains, and I call him the brawn.” The unique logo was designed by Josh’s friend, who he met in the military.
When their three-week holiday cruise was cancelled due to COVID, Anthony Ivers-Read and Tom Rigg knew they had to rebound. Not to worry. Well-versed in cooking and baking at the holidays, British-born Ivers-Read started planning the Christmas menu. While it might be just the two of them at their Gulfport home, it made no difference. The traditional English feast would commence, albeit a tad smaller. “In England, most holidays are about the food,” said Ivers-Read, who is retired from the hospitality business but spends lots of time in the kitchen. He grew up around restaurants and learned to cook from his father, who was a chef. “Holidays center around family and food … sausage rolls, mince pie, roasted potatoes and goose.” He fondly recalls the Christmases of his youth when the family festivities would start in earnest on Christmas Eve with plenty of food. There would be Christmas crackers (toys) and party hats and lots of noise. This year will be different in that respect, but he plans to chat with his family virtually on Zoom. Planning began in earnest in early October, when he started the long process of making a traditional English Christmas Cake. Similar to a heavy fruitcake filled with nuts and currants, it requires the addition of brandy every week over two months. “It’s something my friends expect,” says Ivers-Read. “I cover it in marzipan and it bakes for 4 and half hours.” He’s thinking he might even bake a stuffed goose for Christmas dinner this year, too.
The St. Pete Life Team would like to wish everyon e a safe, healthy and happy Holiday Season.
After 14 years working in a corporate setting, the couple took their future into their own hands. As an engaged couple, a terrible moving experience with a local, well-known company fueled their vision for starting a detail-oriented, customercentric, boutique moving company. “They arrived hours late without calling, scratched half our furniture, left a large item behind, and the bill was double the estimate. If this was the best company in the area, we knew we could do better. Hence, the vision for Big Man’s Moving Company was born. When we got married, we decided to pursue our dream of opening a family business, using wedding gifts to partially fund our first 26’ truck!” Intensive training coupled with quality employees has led to the successful completion of over 2600 local and out-of-state moves in under 4 years, and they’ve now expanded to 5 trucks. “We are very thankful for the community support, and for their referrals!” In fact, Big Man’s was voted the #1 Mover in Tampa Bay by readers of the Tampa Bay Times in August. A customer call to BMMC goes directly to the owners, not a call center. Josh and Brooke speak with each client, offering helpful advice. “Customer service is our #1 priority, and that includes the entire process from the first point of contact to the completion of the move.” If a move is in your future, Bigmansmoving.com offers must-ask insurance questions, pre-move planning, and money-saving tips. ARTS & CULTURE
And the Curtain Rises…(finally) PHOTO/ STEVEN LE THEEPHOTONINJA.COM
FreeFall Theatre came up with an ambitious drive-in theater concept for their “War of the Worlds” musical production which was staged facing the parking lot. The run, through December 6, is selling out most of the 30 parking spaces for each performance.
Fall traditionally marks the opening of most performing arts seasons, and as it applies to theater in St. Pete, you can’t, as they say, keep good men and women down. BY CINDY STOVALL No doubt we have seen amazing levels of innovation during our collective COVID journey. Many arts related programs and businesses have found clever ways to harness the power of the interwebs in order to stay visible and afloat. In the case of live staged performances, however, it’s been a different story. Though online readings and other offerings have been put forward, the live theater experience with its (exquisitely) close quarters and enclosed spaces has remained, for the most part, in a holding pattern. But lately, with an infusion of innovation, plenty of determination and a redirection of the creative spirit, the ghost lights dim just a bit and the footlights are going up. Here’s a look at what we can look forward to this season. A Season (Literally) Reimagined What could be more on the nose than a theater season titled Reimagine? American Stage has a habit of nailing a concept, and long before any global pandemic. “Our 2020-2021 season, Reimagine embraces this time of transition

and change within our world and within our artform,” said Producing Artistic Director Stephanie Gularte. “ It was essential that we craft a season that allows us to remain connected to the community at a time when we all need the meaningful human connection that powerful storytelling can provide, while at the same time, preparing for ongoing flexibility in an evolving public health landscape.” Considering real world circumstances, American Stage’s season is especially ambitious and full of hope with “more powerful stories than ever before.” Here’s what you can expect in a hybrid (virtual and live) season designed to include all: A Digital Theatre Series is solely for digital access. This series includes three plays in three months to open the season. At time of press, Letters to Kamala is nearing end of run. Two additional offerings for November and December include Kate – The Unexamined Life of Katherine Hepburn and Nosotros La Gente (We the People).
ARTS & CULTURE Another virtual series that embodies the whole Reimagine concept is Creative Collaborators. Described as a “linking of creative arms across the country,” it truly takes the virtual theater experience to the next level by providing American Stage members the opportunity to view productions from participating theaters across the country. A Hybrid Production Series includes four mainstage style plays intended for virtual viewing as well as a return to live, onsite performances. Beginning in January, this series opens with a play by local favorite and Buffalo native Natalie Symons. The People Downstairs was all set to premier in March 2020 just as shut-downs began. It’s really heartening to see it return, as it symbolizes a sort of defiance against adversity and a grasping at visions of normalcy. January also sees the return, in hybrid form, of the wildly popular 21st Century Voices: Emerging Plays – New Plays Festival. It’s American Stage’s innovative annual search for new works across the country. Chosen plays will earn staged readings, with one play slated to be fully produced in the following season. Live onsite performances are planned. Of course, no American Stage season, reimagined or otherwise, would be the same without a return to live theater in the park. Footloose is set to return in April and May after its cancellation last Spring for a bit of dancing under the stars at Demen’s Landing. For show schedules and ticket information: americanstage.org (727) 823-7529 Goosebumps! That’s the way freeFall Theatre’s artistic director Eric Davis describes a conversation he had with a patron at one of the last live shows before shut-down – a patron who was simply reveling, not in the performance per say, but in the audience reaction to the performance and to each other – the irreplaceable element of attending live theater that no Zoom production could ever match. In a public message to freeFall fans during the forced hiatus, Davis expressed his sincere hope for a “return to goosebumps.” Well, I’m happy to report that, even as we speak, goosebumps have returned to audiences at the freeFall campus – and in quite a wonderfully nostalgic way. “War of the Worlds,” H.G. Wells’ 1938 radio broadcast that interrupted a regular show to report an alien invasion, both fooled and terrified a nation. It has been adapted for the stage by Davis himself and musical director Michael Rabbe. While that’s certainly true nostalgia, it’s the way in which the production is being staged that takes me back. The performances are being done on an outdoor stage and viewed by the audience drive-in style! In one of the most original
responses to the dilemma of keeping audiences safe, what could be more fun, or more responsible, than staying in your car? It’s genius. This live, drive-in radio experience tells H.G. Wells’ sci-fi classic using music, comedy, multimedia and a bevy of special guest stars via satellite. Maybe I’m so excited because I actually remember going (often) to drive-ins with my family in the ‘60’s. It’s where I first saw The Sound of Music in 1965 and Night of the Living Dead in 1968. Those nights of sitting on the car roof in my pajamas are an enduring and sweet memory that I can’t wait to relive at freeFall (well, the roof and pajamas part, not so much). War of the Worlds runs through December 6. General admission tickets are per car with up to four occupants and parking is first come, first served. Hurry, tickets are going fast. Go to freefalltheatre.com (727) 498-5205 Combining Virtual and Live The Palladium, like all performing arts venues in St. Pete, had gone dark for a time – cancelling many shows and facing the unavoidable loss of revenue. But Executive Director Paul Wilborn has been even more concerned about the loss of revenue to the artists. “We’ve managed to get by through good budgeting and our St. Pete College affiliation,” says Wilborn. “We’ve even avoided furloughing staff. But I always say that you’re not a real arts community unless your local artists can afford to LIVE in the community through their chosen work and talents.” With that in mind, Wilborn and staff have been hard at work updating virtual theater experiences, adding back live staged performances and developing a revolutionary donor funded programming development series. The fall and coming holiday season will be “full steam ahead” at the Palladium. The virtual programming, known as The Palladium Live, will Continued on next page November/December 2020

ARTS & CULTURE continue with a total revamping of production quality. Lighting and video guru Christopher Spatafora has assumed the responsibilities of production manager and plans to begin using multiple cameras and upgraded sound equipment. Live staged performances will be offered in an updated format already in use. “We have always been fortunate in that the Palladium is essentially two venues in one,” says Wilborn. “The Side Door offerings on the downstairs stage with cabaret seating have been based on a 180 ticket capacity. With that limit as a guide we plan to offer these same performances - except they will be staged upstairs in Hough Hall. This will allow for natural physical distancing as the mainstage has an 830-seat capacity.” Genres include comedy, music, dance and much more. Additionally, several live shows produced by other arts organizations like the St. Petersburg Opera, but staged at the Palladium will go on as scheduled. The newest addition to the Palladium’s mission to support artists comes in the form of a program that will actually pay them for developing and staging new work. “We’ve always wanted an ‘artist in residence’ type of program and, through the generosity of one of our patrons, the Palladium will have the ability to offer development stipends to our valued artists for the creation of their work in addition to paying them to perform it,” Wilborn explains. “We’re calling it the Palladium Creative Class of 2021.” The initial series of 10 program development grants for the coming year will go to frequently appearing Palladium artists of all genres like jazz and bossa nova impresario, Nate Najar and the ever talented Helen French, co-creator of the annual dance showcase Beacon. “We plan to offer this opportunity to many deserving artists for multiple seasons moving forward,” says Wilborn. “We want to be a part of what makes St. Pete a real arts community.” For show schedules and ticket information: mypalladium.org (727) 822-3590

Pop-ups and Hybrid Programming The St. Petersburg Opera Company, led by its devoted director Mark Sforzini, is yet another study in passion, determination and creative energy applied in a crisis. In SPO’s 15-year history, it’s not even the first one. The economic crisis of 2008 threatened the then fledgling company as well. “We have been likened to ‘The Little Engine That Could,’ says Sforzini. “And I’m giving my commitment to see SPO through this current crisis.” Though many productions were cancelled, patrons continued to donate funds and their unused tickets in a show of solidarity and support. Now, with the current 2020-21 season’s offerings, the faith of SPO’s fans will be rewarded. Of course, as with most performing arts venues, virtual offerings will continue such as the Artist Recital Series, featuring eight artists recounting their personal journeys through song. The Maestro Series will be offered via “hybrid” programming – a combination of online and in-person performances. Concerts are filmed (with three cameras) outdoors at various locations for online consumption, but a limited number of patrons are also invited to purchase tickets to attend the performance being filmed in person. Probably my favorite reimagining of programming in the St. Pete Opera repertoire is Popera – a series of “pop-up” holiday offerings staged at various locales with an in-person, physically distanced and masked audience. Still to come on the schedule is Opera Harvest on November 22, and the annual seasonal extravaganza, Holiday Sparkle, a fan fave which will return to its home at the Palladium Theater. For show schedules and ticket information: stpeteopera.org (727) 823-2040 Phasing Protocols and Options The 53rd season of The Florida Orchestra has been, in a word, reimagined. Music director Michael Francis has devised a series of modifications that will effectively reunite us with our passion for live classical music. “Your concert experience will be different
The Palladium is moving smaller concerts into the larger Hough Hall for added seat spacing.
ARTS & CULTURE than your last visit, but you will not be disappointed by the depth and passion of the music,” he stated in a press release. Virtual concerts and programming will continue to be available, but “Phase One” protocols will allow for attendance at live performances in the concert hall at the Mahaffey Theater. Here’s how it will work: To begin, limited seating will be available to allow for 25% capacity (close to 500 seats). Seats must be reserved and they will be offered in pairs, six feet apart. Smaller, shorter performances of about 70 minutes will be performed without intermission. Full time musicians will be divided and rotated through performances and seated apart at safe distances on stage. Face coverings are to be worn at all times; and strict cleaning regimes will be carried out.
Concerts will be offered with more options. For example, Soundwaves offers an expansion of the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series, featuring explorations of music from a wide range of composers. Raymond James Pops returns for Holiday Pops and Coffee Concerts gives us an opportunity to attend brunch time performances. There is literally something for everyone who dearly loves and has missed live classical music. For tickets and more information, go to floridaorchestra.org (727) 892-3331 While we can never be certain what the future holds when it comes to the pandemic, it’s quite clear that the show must go on for local performing arts in one form or another. Kudos!

BY CINDY STOVALL Much has changed since my last Beauty & The ‘Burg column. But the very good news is that we – all of us in this creative community, have continually demonstrated heart, resourcefulness, determination and boundless hope. Despite the obvious limitations of our current circumstances, there is amazing work being done out there and creative energy being adapted and refocused to meet this crisis. It is an honor reporting on the inexhaustible innovation that keeps us connected to each other and to beauty – to art. It’s been an oasis. I, and a grateful community, thank you all. So, let’s just enjoy some holiday doings, shall we? I want to give a shoutout to the Arts Annual at the Creative Pinellas Gallery in Largo which opens on November 12 as an in-person exhibit and a virtual event reception on the November 15. Two dozen talented artists from throughout Pinellas County will present their work in the gallery’s beautiful spaces. One of the most sorely missed events around downtown -- Second Saturday ArtWalk -- is back. There have been wonderful virtual ArtWalks over the last few months but being able to safely shop our favorite local galleries at holiday time is a definite salve for the soul. Safety protocols are observed at each location to allow for physical distancing, access to masks and sanitizer. Trolley access was not utilized in October, so check stpeteartsalliance.org for updated information. Rather not walk? Check out the new Virtual ArtWalk video tours that take you inside of St. Pete’s galleries and studios at curatestpete. com, a project of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance.
For you first time ArtWalkers, five of our local arts districts combine forces to provide the perfect evening of gallery hopping – places like Articles Gallery, Duncan McClellan’s Glass Gallery, The Arts Exchange in the Warehouse Arts District and so many more are open from 5-9pm with many having special shows and holiday offerings. Mark your calendars for November 14 and December 12 and support local artists! Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave., is the longtime home to dozens of local craft artists. Like all businesses, they have struggled in the times of Corona. Thankfully, the gallery is once again open to the public Wednesday – Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. For the holidays, CraftArt with a Twist comes to us as an open-air market on Central Avenue to give us the opportunity for real seasonal shopping. Vendor/artists will be showing off their sculpture, mixed media, ceramics and jewelry. Two dates, two markets, two chances to get outdoors, see your neighbors (safely) and spend locally. Saturday, November 21, and Saturday, December 5, from 10am-5pm floridacraftart.org And if you’d like to stay virtual, there’s always the joy of the Radio Theatre Project, hosted by the Studio @620 on the 3rd Mondays of the month. Check thestudioat620.com for precise schedule, showtimes and ticket information. Bonnie Agan and crew always have such lovely holiday offerings done in such a nostalgic way. It’s sure to restore a sense of holiday wonder. Wishing you all a happy and HEALTHY holiday season. See you next year. Non-Profits Face Challenges During Season of Giving In 2020, nonprofit organizations didn’t just step outside of the box, they completely reinvented and reimagined fundraising approaches. They had to. COVID-19 crushed that box and obliterated traditional opportunities. As the community takes on the dual challenge of grappling with the pandemic and reviving the economy, charitable organizations have turned to acts of innovation and inspiration to not only raise dollars, but sustain a connection with supporters.
Even my own organization, the American Cancer Society, had to find new ways to connect with supporters. Our Tampa Cattle Baron’s Ball went from a planned gala at Armature Works to a virtual event that featured nationally-renowned comedian Tom Cotter and home dinner delivery for VIPs.
Heels to Heal, which aims to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, elevated its fundraising approach with a hybrid event. Supporters could watch their annual fashion show and bid on a silent auction, their main fundraiser of the year, from home, or attend a watch party at 400 Beach Drive. Starting Right, Now, an organization that helps homeless teens, converted its annual luncheon into a November outdoor event at Al Lang Stadium. PARC has transitioned its annual gala into a weeklong (Dec. 4-11) virtual black tie gala, promising “an event like no other with music, stories from our families, messages from our community, a signature drink and more.”
Success has been redefined for nonprofits, who have had to readjust goals while striving to remain relevant during a pandemic. It’s a tall order given that the demands for their services have peaked in an era where the financial stress on its capabilities continues to intensify. But they have to meet the need. They can’t give up. And now more than ever, they need the help of the community. The holiday season has always proven fruitful for nonprofits, but there’s a fear of fatigue. Donors and supporters rallied during the earliest months of the pandemic, anticipating the return of some degree of normalcy by the fall. Now a potential second spike in coronavirus looms, and a giving community may be exhausted from nine months of connecting virtually and giving more of their finances and themselves.

SPL LIVING “I think a lot of people are nervous about the holidays,” said Wilma Norton, vice president of community connections for the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. “There is a concern about this question: Have people given what they’re capable of giving during COVID? Traditionally, this is the big giving time of the year.
In a year of unimaginable challenges that have become all too real, everyone needs to do what they can to help, even those who find themselves in need of assistance. As John Kennedy once said, a rising tide lifts all boats -- and never has our community needed that rising tide more. Supporting philanthropic organizations is about more than helping the less fortunate or giving to a favorite arts organization. It’s about brightening the light at the end of this unprecedented tunnel. It’s about infusing the confidence of those who can help us escape the darkness of these tumultuous times.
“So we’re gearing up to give the whole end of the year push our all. Not that we don’t always, but especially this year, we think it’s incredibly important to keep the word out there about what the needs are, keep in touch with our donors to help them maximize their end-ofyear giving, both for now and going into next year. This isn’t going to be overcome December 31.” But philanthropy not only gives residents a chance to help, it provides a chance for all of us to find a patch of common ground in a year littered with political and social divisiveness. We can all agree that the color of hands lending support matters not, and no one really cares what side of the political spectrum funnels dollars towards worthy causes.
If you work for a nonprofit, like I do, push yourself to create solutions. If you can give, do so. If you can volunteer without endangering your health, find a way. No amount is too small, no effort is too little. After all, it is the season of giving. Ernest Hooper is the regional communications director for the American Cancer Society and a former Tampa Bay Times columnist.

Looking Back on a Century
YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg PHOTOS/YMCA OF GREATER ST. PETERSBURG
BY MONICA KILE In 1920 St. Petersburg was a sleepy tourist town on the verge of a tremendous population boom. Motivated by a desire to meet growing social needs in the community, a small group of citizen leaders met on a late spring evening to form the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg. Like its counterparts at home and abroad, the St. Petersburg YMCA sought to provide safe refuge, fellowship, sport, and life skills to its members. Within a few short years it was serving thousands of young men through gymnastics, swimming and fitness programs, as well as camping and church groups. One hundred years later, the organization still shines as a beacon of health and community spirit. Today’s YMCA offers a wide variety of programming from its state-of-the art facility on 1st Avenue South, but many still fondly remember its original ornate downtown location, built just a few years after its founding. With its 1925 opening, the grand Mediterranean Revival style building began to serve as a community gathering place, hosting dignitaries and important events alongside youth basketball games and swimming lessons.

Its dormitory provided accommodation to young men new to town or just getting on their feet, and during WWII housed thousands of servicemen paying 50 cents a night while on short leave from nearby airfields. The Y’s popular summer camp MaWi-An (its name taken from the first two letters of the daughter of Dr. A.W. Anderson, who donated the land for the camp) was a place where young boys learned outdoor skills like archery and canoeing, and took their daily swim. Yet, like all of early St. Petersburg, the YMCA did not welcome all citizens equally. The grand downtown building was off limits to black members. After prodding from the community, the Colored Branch YMCA opened in 1945, later renamed the Melrose Park YMCA. Its beloved leader, Dean Mohr, was
SPL LIVING Florida’s first black YMCA Director, and he led an organization at the heart of the city’s vibrant African American community. Even after the downtown location integrated in 1966 the Melrose Park YMCA remained an important community center. Over the years the Y has nurtured a spectrum of athletes, some of whom have reached the pinnacle of their respective sports. YMCA athletes in gymnastics, wrestling, and judo have achieved state, national, and in the case of the 1984 Olympic judo competitor Dewey Mitchell, world recognition. Doctors, lawyers, and judges played badminton on their lunch hour, while thousands of children learned to swim in the YMCA pool. In recent years, the YMCA Dance Academy has garnered acclaim from the community and devotion from its dancers. With the grand opening of the Jim and Heather Gills YMCA on 1st Avenue South in 2001, a new era dawned. The bright and airy facility is centrally located and features a full sized gymnasium, state-of-the-art cycling studio, heated pool, and the same
commitment to fitness, family, and community that the YMCA is known for. The YMCA’s reach in the community has continued to expand over the years, with an additional wellness facility - the Bardmoor YMCA in Largo - expanding into a new building in 2014, and several Resource Centers opening at Childs Park, Lealman Exchange, and Harbordale. Today’s YMCA is also closely associated with early education and childcare, opening three Pre-school Academies and multiple after-school programs at schools throughout the county. Over the past 100 years the YMCA has reflected the best of our community, while sometimes serving as a place to address our flaws. From its early days of camping, youth groups, and basketball, through gender and racial integration, the YMCA has kept its finger on the pulse of the community and today offers a warm welcome to all who pursue health, fellowship, and a chance to serve their community.

First Aid Course Helps Spot Mental Health Issues The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay has launched a new mental health initiative aimed at training people how to identify, understand and respond to the mental health challenges of family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Mental Health First Aid is an online course that focuses on early intervention, in essence a “first responder” training that anyone can take. The 8-hour real-time online course aims to empower people who work in public-facing roles to identify, understand and respond to signs of addiction, depression and mental illness. The Community Foundation is aiming to train 5,000 people over the next three years,
partnering with St. Petersburg College and Love IV Lawrence, a Community Foundationhosted fund that supports organizations making positive changes around mental health. One in five American adults experience a mental health challenge within any given year, and social isolation, loneliness, worry and stress related to COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted many Americans’ mental health. Two in five Americans reported struggling with mental health or substance abuse in June 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control. SPL HEALTH relationships, and finances. Isolation, depression, anxiety and loneliness are all on the rise. Recognizing the signs may save lives, says Marlene Spalten, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. Surprisingly, it’s not always the people you might expect who are suffering. “These emotions are affecting people who have not had these issues before,” says Spalten. “This course is modeled after CPR training but for mental health. It helps you identify and diagnose a possible problem, without being judgmental. In CPR, the first thing you do is stop the bleeding. That’s what this course is all about.” Mental Health First Aid was developed through the National Council for Behavioral Health and is being offered throughout the United States. It teaches people to listen thoughtfully for key words and phrases, identify any odd words or behavior, and encourages you to gently suggest ways to find help. The course can be done in a
day or a weekend, with a two-hour prep course followed by one session of 6 hours with a trainer. Courses are limited to 20 participants; the first course in late October filled quickly. Mental Health First Aid classes will continue “until 5,000 people have been trained, and hopefully beyond that,” said Spalten. The Foundation has grant funding which will cover the $125 fee for those who work in nonprofit organizations, faith communities and educational settings – people who are constantly in communication with hundreds of people. Those who work as medical first responders would also find it helpful. But all individuals are welcome to sign up and funding is available for those who can’t afford it. “We don’t want anyone who wants it, not to get trained,” said Spalten. “This course will create everyday heroes, it can save lives.” To learn more about Mental Health First Aid or to sign up, go to CFTampaBay.org/mentalhealth/

Choosing a CBD Product For Your Pet CBD oil (cannabidiol oil extracted from the hemp plant) is one of the newest and hottest consumer products available, with a seemingly endless supply of producers. While this is an exciting time for the pioneers of the market, this can also be a scary time to be a consumer. The FDA recently approved a product with CBD oil, but that product is intended for human use for people with a rare form of epilepsy. However, hemp and CBD products, especially hemp products made or marketed toward pets, are not as heavily regulated. Finding a CBD company that you can trust is crucial. Whether you decide to join the CBD Dog Health pack or decide to try another CBD company, there are a few marketing terms and things to watch out for as you search. “Pet” products originally made for people Companies which previously produced CBD for people are now diving into the pet market. This may seem like a savvy business move, after all, if I trust you to provide my CBD, I can certainly trust you with CBD for my pets, right? Unfortunately, there are companies out there that simply put a pet label on a human product. This can be dangerous because human products often have added sweeteners or flavors to make them more pleasant tasting, but these ingredients can be harmful to dogs. For example, xylitol and stevia can often be found in human CBD tinctures, but can cause liver damage in dogs. The best way to avoid these sweeteners is to make sure you read the labels and know what is inside of the bottle or package before giving it to your dog. Even better: find a CBD company that makes tinctures specifically formulated for pets. Industrialized hemp oil vs. made in USA Where hemp oil is made matters. Industrialized hemp oil from overseas is not regulated so there is no way to know exactly what is inside of the oil unless it is lab tested. Moreover, even
64
StPeteLifeMag.com
November/December 2020
Pet Tales though you may trust your CBD company, they may not know where the grower is even located if they are using industrialized hemp oil from overseas. They may have the best intentions, but it can be a gamble when a company uses industrialized hemp. I recommend that you look for a company that uses hemp grown in the U.S. If the company is reputable, they should be able to disclose the state where they get their hemp. For example, CBD Dog Health’s hemp is grown in California, Colorado and Minnesota.
Broad vs. full spectrum You might notice that some CBD oils say full spectrum, while some say broad spectrum. They sound similar enough, but there is a difference. Full spectrum means that all of the cannabinoids and terpenes that can possibly be present are left intact and remain in the final product. While there are thousands of cannabinoids and terpenes present in each plant and it is not possible to preserve every single one during the manufacturing process, full spectrum means that none of the cannabinoids were purposefully removed. Full spectrum still has the benefits of the “entourage effect” (which means that all of the elements work together to enhance the overall effect), making the cannabinoids pack more of a punch. On the flip side, broad spectrum means that the CBD or cannabinoid profile was specifically extracted from the plant, without regard to any cannabinoids or terpenes that might be left behind or lost during the extraction process. This can negate the “entourage effect.” You might see this more often with CBD extracted from marijuana plants (containing more than the legally accepted limit of .3 percent THC), rather than just growing a hemp plant with .3 percent or less THC and using all of the extracted product. Broad spectrum will not create the same end result as a full spectrum hemp CBD oil.
SPL PETS Full panel third-party lab testing Full panel third-party lab testing for purity and potency is how reputable CBD companies are putting their money where their mouth is. If the CBD company that you are looking to buy from does not have full panel third-party lab testing information easily accessible, you may want to rethink your purchase. While CBD companies are not required to have third-party lab testing results, it is widely viewed as a best practice. Transparency is key, and if you come across a company unwilling to share their full ingredients list and testing with you, it is a red flag. Full panel third-party lab testing should be performed on every batch produced, and should show the full cannabinoid profile as well as the presence of any pesticides, herbicides, or chemical solvents. For example, if a company claims to use CO2 extraction for their hemp plants, they should not have any chemical solvents like butane (lighter fluid) or alcohol. If you see alcohol or butane in the third-party lab results, it can indicate dishonesty. The full panel third-party lab test will also show the exact potency (in number of milligrams or as a percentage) of active CBD, which is important in determining if the product will work. Third-party lab testing is so important when it comes to spotting counterfeit cannabidiol. Sadly, there are companies
m contemporary d e r n
who have been known to sell counterfeit or synthetic CBD, which can cause sickness. Making sure that your CBD provider has full panel third-party lab testing and good reviews from other users can be crucial in avoiding counterfeit CBD, as well as ensuring that you are getting a quality product. Education is key As with any new industry, education is vital. Finding a CBD company that is willing to educate their staff, customers, retailers is important. A company that has a team of experts can help you know if the products are right for your pet, and are often willing to answer any questions you have. Moreover, a company with experts focused on continuing education—whether they are cannabis experts, pet experts, veterinarian advisors, or all of the above—is going to ensure that their products are safe and effective. If the company you are considering purchasing from does not provide educational materials or content, or doesn’t show a willingness to educate, it might be time to reconsider. “Abundance” by Anna Ayres
ArtJones, Gulfport’s annual art studio walkabout, continues this year on December 5-6. The self-guided tour, show and sale of fine original artwork is a great opportunity to check out everyone’s favorite quirky town along the shore of Boca Ciega Bay in south St. Petersburg. Meet the artists in their working studios scattered through backyards and down alleys in the historic neighborhood. Find everything from ceramics and glass art to paintings, jewelry, fiber crafts, photography and more. Hours are Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm. Print a map online and find out more about the artists at artjonesstudiotour.com
[Gallery open Tuesday 11-4 & Thursday-Saturday 11-6]
If you miss Art Jones, head on down to Gulfport for the upgraded First Friday Art Walks from 5 to 9 pm on the first Friday of every month. The expanded event includes local and regional fine arts and crafts vendors for a juried show with both emerging and professional artists in all media. It’s hosted by the Gulfport Merchants Chamber and all safety protocols are met for a safe and entertaining night out.
Holiday Market in Gulfport
Sad because Shopapalooza won’t happen this year? The good folks at LocalShops1 are partnering with the City of Gulfport, Gulfport Merchant Chamber and SIK Promotions for a Shop Small Holiday Market on November 28. Find unique arts and crafts by local makers just perfect for gift-giving from 10 am to 7 pm along Beach Boulevard downtown. When you get thirsty or hungry, there are plenty of places to quench your thirst or grab a bite, too. Gulfport is requiring CDC protocol for all events so you’ll feel safe, but shoppers are asked to bring your own mask.

We know what it means to be here for the
communities of St. Petersburg. After all, we’ve
been doing it for generations — listening, guiding
and providing award-winning, compassionate care
that’s always nearby. And as we’ve built our expertise, we’ve also built strong relationships within our
communities. That alone makes a big difference. Because when you need care you can trust, you want the kind that’s been there, like a friend, year after year.

safety and protection for patients and team members at BayfrontStPete.com.
