As we move into fall, it’s time for our Annual Home Design Issue. We love putting this magazine together since it gives us the opportunity to see up-close the trends and transformations that go into making a house a home. We were excited to learn about a stunning historic home renovation in Pass-a-Grille that is our cover story. If you have ever thought about owning one of St. Pete’s many historic homes, this article is a must-read. Author Sylvia Hopkins provides much insight into the many considerations that a prospective historic homeowner needs to make before taking the leap.

If you are a wine collector, you’ll want to check out our Wine Rescue story about St. Pete Cellars. It’s a great read about an entrepreneur couple who embarked on a mission to open the city’s first curated wine storage facility. And if you feel like upping your game and sharpening your communication skills, read about the hugely popular improvisation classes offered by Spitfire Comedy House. Yes, improv is a thing in the ‘Burg!

Fall brings with it a lot of festivals and things to do. In this issue, we take a look at the city’s premier annual food and wine festival Savor St. Pete, the annual SHINE Mural Festival which brings international artists to town in October, and two popular jazz events - Clearwater Jazz Holiday and Suncoast Jazz Festival. In addition, Ernest Hooper checks in with local jazz musician Nate Najar to learn more the explosive success of his partnership with Brazilian singer Daniela Soledade.

Enjoy the read!

Wine Rescue

A new wine storage facility fills a missing link for owners of fine wine collections in St. Pete.

A new business quietly opened in St. Pete earlier this year that should have local wine collectors seriously happy. Part storage facility/part private club, St. Pete Cellars offers secure, state-ofthe-art wine storage and a personal concierge to assist you. Clients become “members” upon signing up for the storage service, and the benefits include a member portal with online access to a catalog of your wine inventory (including a photo of each label), and the ability to have your selected bottle or bottles available for pickup with only an advance phone call. Member tastings and dinners are also part of the perks.

A service-oriented wine storage facility was sorely needed in St. Pete, say owners Roy and Rhonda Whitehead, who came up with the idea for St. Pete Cellars after moving to St. Pete and having nowhere to store their extensive collection of wine. Coming from Seattle, where vineyards, wineries and wine storage are not uncommon, the Whiteheads faced a conundrum.

“One thing we didn’t think about when we decided to move here was our wine collection,” explains Roy, who had retired after 40 years as a banking executive. “We’ve been collecting for

about 25 years and in the Pacific Northwest there are plenty of places to store your wine, so we just took it for granted there would be a place like that here. Then we got here and discovered there was no place in Pinellas County to store your wine. So out of desperation, we decided to do this ourselves.”

The Whiteheads had previously lived in Tampa Bay in the early 1990s, when Roy was a regional president of First Union Bank. After moving to Seattle, they would come back to the area to visit relatives, and after retiring, the Whiteheads kept coming back and eventually fell in love with St. Pete. “The city has changed so much in the last couple decades, we just couldn’t believe it,” contributes Rhonda. “Every time we came back we saw change. The art scene, the restaurants, the high-rises and the walkability downtown. It was all very attractive to us.” They moved here permanently in December of 2019.

16 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2023 SPL LIVING
Founders Roy and Rhonda Whitehead are joined by manager and cellarmaster Kory Lynn in front of St. Pete Cellars.

Ideas of sailing off into the sunset during retirement faded once the Whiteheads moved to St. Pete and set their sights on establishing a wine storage facility. They spent nine months just searching for the right facility and location, settling on a corner parcel in a quiet industrial complex just north of North Kenwood and a stone’s throw from I-275. They spent another year working with designers, landscapers and builders remodeling the 4,000-square-foot manufacturing plant to specifications that included a 3,800-square-foot temperature and humidity controlled storage room (constant 55 degrees with 65% to 75% humidity). It needed to be flood-proof during a storm event and provide onsite generator backup. A high-tech security camera system with 17 cameras and 24/7 monitoring was also installed.

The Whiteheads hired local wine expert Kory Lynn as general manager, resident wine expert and cellarmaster, and consider him an integral part of the team from handling member requests and deliveries, to monitoring cellar conditions. Lynn, a wine buyer and co-owner of the Cellar Masters wine bar in the Edge District, is also a sommelier, ready to answer questions and provide advice to members.

St. Pete Cellars opened on April 1 this year and word is getting out. During a tour, Rhonda shows visitors a comfortably appointed Member Lounge which allows members to relax with friends or associates and their selected wine, or host a private wine tasting. A spacious modern kitchen just steps away allows catered dinners or other social gatherings. Additional event space can be found both indoors and on an outdoor patio where mature trees offer a shady venue. The massive storage room can store between 140,000 to 150,000 bottles, she estimates.

Roy Whitehead feels St. Pete is ready for this business.

“We’re getting steady inquiries from people who are moving here from the West Coast and need to store wine,” he says. Manager Kory Lynn concurs. The restaurant scene is “getting there,” he adds, and there’s “a huge demand for a place like this in conjunction with the increase in fine dining … it’s a natural evolution.”

“People are moving here from metropolitan areas where there is a strong culture of wine,” says Lynn, “and with the high influx of people there is a demand for more modern options, so this (St. Pete Cellars) was a logical step for people who enjoy fine wine. We are able to enhance a collection that people are already excited about to guarantee they have the best possible outcome. And, as far as wine storage, we are a fairly unique member-driven experience designed to give you a place to actually enjoy your wine without being in a restaurant.”

Rhonda keeps busy marketing the business to real estate professionals, high-end restaurants and wine shops. She has hosted numerous meetings and small events such as private cigar and wine tastings, and envisions hosting more wine events on property.

The Whiteheads are clearly proud of the unique business they have created. Retirement? That’s a faroff notion now.

Says Roy: “We feel we are like a rescue mission. There are a lot of fine wines in St. Petersburg that need to be rescued. You can spend a lot of money on wine, but if you don’t store it properly you’ll be disappointed. We want to facilitate that.”

St. Pete Cellars is located at 1501 22nd St. N. in St. Petersburg FL. For a tour or more information, call (727) 827-2977 or go to stpetecellars.com

Tropical Modern

For more information call The Richardson Group - Smith & Associates 727-224-6331 or visit www.stpetewaterfrontliving.com.

This striking home is situated at the end of Bayside Drive and presents sweeping views of Big Bayou. It is a rare and exceptional example of “Tropical Modern”, a variation of Mid-Century Modern architecture seen mostly in South Florida and Cuba. Extensive updates have made this a 21st Century home in keeping with its original history and design.

In 1948, Hubert Birk, head of Birk Construction Co, an industrial and commercial building company, decided to use his experience and expertise to design and build his own personal residence in South Saint Petersburg. A 1949 St. Petersburg Times story titled ‘UNBURNABLE, ALL CONCRETE’ HOME BUILT ON BIG BAYOU, summed up the result.

Akin to a lighthouse, a two story semi-circular tower with multiple windows in the dining alcove and master bedroom are topped by a dome of clerestory panes. An updated kitchen includes Sub Zero refrigerator, Wolf gas cooktop, Bosch double ovens, warming drawer, and speed microwave. A beautiful owners suite includes sitting room and bedroom combination with a universal designed bathroom. 10’ ceilings, Italian Porcelain Tile, and original banister with solid maple stairs are just but a few of the appointments that make this home so notable.

An outside entertainment area with a Saltwater, Trapezoid Pool, Spa, and Concrete Dining Pavilion with gas outdoor fireplace provide a wonderful venue to enjoy the water, beautiful sunsets, good friends and family. Finally, a 60’ composite dock leads to deep water with easy access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Rise and SHINE

The streets and alleyways of downtown St. Pete will once again play home to an international cast of artists and their crews when the SHINE Mural Festival returns October 13-22. SHINE will add 14 new murals throughout the art districts plus a series of street art related events, tours, and community Bright Spot projects.

In its ninth year, SHINE has created nearly 150 murals throughout downtown, earning the city a reputation as an international arts destination. The 10-day event, produced by the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and a large number of volunteers, features an impressive line-up of local, national and international mural artist. The festival recently announced a new title sponsor – REFLECTION St. Pete, a luxury condominium residence currently under construction on Mirror Lake.

While final details were pending at press time, SHINE fans can expect an Opening Reception on October 13 and Grand Finale Party October 22, both open to the public. A

number of events hosted by various venues are expected to be offered during the week. Community Bright Spots – murals that invite the community to paint – are expected to be announced in September.

The lineup of artists for 2023 include:

Artist Jones (Tampa)

Chris Dyer (St. Petersburg/Peru)

Fabstraq (Tampa), Andrea Wan (Canada)

Dave Bonzai (London)

Bryan Beyung (Canada)

Loretta Lizzio (Australia)

Bunnie Reiss (California)

Hannah Eddy (Nevada)

Iconic 1925 Spanish Mediterranean Estate with Water Lot

Located on a corner lot of premier Coffee Pot Blvd’s waterfront bricklined street in the historic district of the Old Northeast, this exquisite 4 bedroom, 3 full baths and 2 half baths with 3,637 heated square feet estate is a designated Historic Building. Edgar Ferdon, the architect who designed the home, was a preeminent pioneer architect in St. Petersburg during Florida’s Golden Age, and he built many of our city’s landmark buildings. The home was considered one of the most ambitious Mediterranean Revival homes in the area with the architecture and design choices reflecting a rich history of old world Florida grandeur. The current owners have the original plans to the home which is very rare.

Built with superior hollow tile construction, original wood floors with Cabin Cornered pattern, extraordinary millwork, original chandeliers and sconces, and 11 foot ceilings, the estate seamlessly blends historic design and preservation with modern living. The solarium contains an original gas fireplace and Faience tile, the same tile that was used in the Vinoy Hotel. The spectacular, hand stenciled Pecky Cypress clad ceiling is a show stopper having been painstakingly installed in a uniquely intricate pattern. Graceful arched doors open from the solarium leading to a private courtyard.

The primary bedroom and adjacent bedroom both have en suite bathrooms with elegant cathedral ceilings and original tile and fixtures still in place that harken to another time. Updated to an open concept design, the eat-in kitchen features custom wood cabinetry milled to match the period with a large island and breakfast bar overlooking the pool and water views of Coffee Pot Bayou.

This exquisite estate features a large 14,693 sf lot with detached two-car garage, resort-style pool with pergola, courtyards and basketball court as well as a deeded water lot across the street. The tropically landscaped grounds surrounded by a masonry wall offer spectacular water views from both the sparkling pool and inside the home.

This one-of-a-kind estate is being offered for $3,500,000 through Caryn Rightmyer Group at Premier Sotheby’s International Realty.

A Unique Example of Thoughtful Waterfront Living

This luxury home on the Island of

Verde offers a rare combination of highly desirable factors: Supreme boating and waterfront living, an unusual level of privacy, elegant entertaining and everyday living spaces, immense energy savings, peace of mind, and low insurance costs.

Located on the island’s Grand Canal, widely regarded as some of the Gulf Coast’s premier boating water, this property is clearly a boater’s dream. With a newly rebuilt dock offering two slips, each with its own lift, on wide protected water, very quick bridgeless access to the Gulf of Mexico, and just moments from a full-fledged marina, the boating possibilities are truly first-class.

Unlike many luxury homes on protected water, however, this home offers something very unusual: privacy. Set back from the water, the home is surrounded by meticulously designed tropical landscaping reminiscent of Sunken Gardens, inviting the owners to relax by the pool or wander along winding pathways, all while avoiding the prying eyes of the other Grand Canal residents and passersby, creating a perfect oasis for those requiring a higher level of privacy.

The home itself features a desirable single-level split floor plan, perfect for those looking to avoid stairs, and the layout is elegant and inviting, with large open spaces and tons of glass, offering water views through the lush tropical canopy.

As insurance costs rise throughout the state, this home offers some relief: extensive wind mitigation, resulting in tremendous cost reductions for home insurance, as well as added peace of mind for its owners, In addition, the new roof has a state-of-the-art fully-integrated solar system, resulting in energy costs that are less than zero. The owner actually gets a check from the power company. You can learn more at 693poncedeleon.com

Artist designer Demeree Barth brings

PHOTO MARCIA BIGGS
new life to objects often forgotten

As a young girl, Demeree Barth would watch her seamstress mother create garments on her sewing machine. Eventually, the two would work together on projects, with inspiration from Vogue magazines. Demeree’s talent blossomed and today the Seminole artist creates with a keen eye for fashion. Through her brand called DemiGod Studio, she delivers stunning one-of-a-kind garments, headwear and jewelry worthy of being displayed in a gallery.

Her trademark is layering materials sourced from local thrift stores and found objects, such as spent metal grinder pads, bullet casings, dried flowers and shells. Her experience is evident as she is able to sew, mold and join a variety of non-conventional materials resulting in wearable art. The DemiGod customer often attends parties and wants to stand out from the crowd, she says. “I design a one-of-a-kind accessory, headdress, or outfit that will garner many compliments and amazing photographs for social media,” said Demeree.

Demeree’s wearable art fashions became her medium of choice in 2016, when she joined The Garden Fairies, an art collective in Pinellas County. Since then, she has designed and constructed an “artfit” for the Dunedin Wearable Art Show, a quirky, amusing and amazing runway benefit held annually at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center. “I look forward to this show every year as it motivates me to really create something fabulous that I can wear down the runway,” shared Demeree.

Earlier this year in March, Demeree was invited to display her work at MUSE 2023, the annual St. Pete Arts Alliance fundraiser and

awards. “A fellow wearable art friend, Janna Kennedy, invited me to show some wearable art on models at this gala that’s filled with St. Pete artists and supporters,” Demeree says. “It was incredible seeing four of my designs being modeled under the balloon sculpture by Jason Hackenworth that filled the room.”

Demeree works as an elementary school art teacher by day, encouraging young children to let their creativity flow. But when school’s out, you’ll likely find her in her DemiGod Studio mulling over fabrics and feathers and found objects.

Last November, she mentored high school students for a few sessions in the Dali Museum’s Fashion Design at the Dali program. “Students applied to the program and got to create for five months in the Gibbs High School theater sewing studio,” explains Demeree. “They designed and sewed an outfit inspired by one of Dali’s artworks and had a fashion show at the end. I guided them on how to create, using repurposed and found objects.”

The avant-garde galas held annually at the Dali Museum also provide a perfect complement for DemiGod creations from wild headwear and custom jewelry to one-of-a-kind masks. “I have had a few clients who attend the Dali galas,” Demeree says. “I love designing for these galas.”

See more of Demeree’s work and contact her at demigodstudio. com Ro Martinez is a creative writer and fine art artist. She can be reached at romartinezrimes.com.

Age Before Beauty

Tampa, St Petersburg, and St. Pete Beach all boast rich histories. One of the oldest and best-preserved neighborhoods in this area is nestled on the southern tip of St. Pete Beach. Just south of St. Pete Beach’s Don Cesar Pink Palace, you’ll find the quaint beach community of Pass-a-Grille Beach. Settled in 1886 by army veteran Zephaniah Phillips and his family, the area was already known among Spanish and French fishermen for its fruitful waters.

Zephaniah built the first home on Pass-a-Grille, and among one of the first homes on the Pinellas County beaches. Many homes would be built in the years following this initial settlement. These early residents would use a ferry service to cross the intracoastal waterway between St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach. It wouldn’t be until 1919 that a local developer would build a bridge connecting the beaches and mainland St. Pete. In 1928 the Don Cesar, famously known as the “Pink Palace” of St. Pete Beach would become the crown jewel of the area.

The home featured in these photos is located on historic Pass-aGrille Beach. Built in 1920, just one year after the opening of the first bridge to Pass-a-Grille, the home encapsulates early St. Pete Beach charm. This project was completed by Strobel Design Build through a successful and intimate collaboration with the homeowners.

Originally built in the popular beach house bungalow style of the early 20th century, the home features large windows that bring light into the open floor plan. During the design process the owners worked with Strobel Design Build to come up with a plan that honored the history of the house while still bringing it up to the owner’s modern standards of living. are tastefully and intentionally planted throughout, providing an elevated level of comfort and functionality to this historic home. As an added bonus, the back of the property is home to a charming little cottage that can be used by visiting family and friends.

Renovate vs New Build

If you have ever considered home ownership in the Tampa Bay area, then you have likely explored some of the area’s historic neighborhoods and possibly even some of the historic homes. Coming in all shapes and sizes, the historic homes of Tampa Bay feature all degrees of unique character. Unfortunately, that character often includes very real signs of aging which typically require some level of professional attention in order to make these residences safe and comfortable.

In many cases this leads homeowners to entertain the question: “Should I renovate, or should I build new?” There is no one-sizefits-all answer to this question. The answer typically depends on a variety of factors, both to do with the house itself as well as the homeowners.

First, let’s explore factors that involve the property. The condition of the historic home is usually directly linked to how well the home has been maintained and updated throughout its life. For example, maintenance such as termite and moisture control and treatment, updates including pipes, electric wiring, and HVAC units and ductwork. If these updates and maintenance items have been appropriately performed to the home throughout its life, the project scope will be more cost-effective than it would be if these items

were neglected for large spans of time. Ultimately, the remodel of a well-maintained historic home is more likely to have the luxury of focusing on aesthetic elements rather than safety and functionality issues.

Next, we can explore the factors that relate to each individual homeowner. As with any remodeling project, there are a myriad of factors to consider, and there are a number of additional factors to note regarding historic homes.

First and foremost, it is important for homeowners to identify their tolerance for the unexpected. The process of historic home remodeling, more often than not, includes more work than one may bargain for. Most competent contractors will perform some degree of due diligence investigation of the condition of the home before presenting the homeowner with an estimate or contract. Nonetheless, it is impossible to predict or determine what a remodeling project could reveal about the condition of what lies hidden beneath the surfaces of a home.

Consequently, most historic home remodels reveal additional work that needs to be done. This can range from minor moisture damage repair to major foundation issues. Therefore, it is important for a homeowner to be prepared for some (possibly unpleasant and costly) discoveries during their historic home remodel.

Another factor that is often relevant in the large-scale renovations of historic homes is that it may not necessarily be the most economic option. Meaning that in some cases, an extensive remodel

is comparable in cost to a new home build. To certain homeowners, the value of their historic home is enough to justify the cost. Whereas some homeowners prefer the predictability of cost and dependable value of a new home build. There is no correct course, it simply comes down to individual preferences and priorities.

Understanding FEMA Rules

Living in coastal cities means that homeowners must also be aware of restrictions implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to flood-zone properties and improvements. The FEMA rule states that improvements to noncompliant homes (typically referring to homes with living floors below base flood elevation) cannot exceed 49% of the depreciated structure-value.

This “Structure Value” refers to the value an appraiser assigns to the home structure alone, not including the value of the land or any other property features. The property appraiser assigns a value to each property and its corresponding structure; however, FEMA will also accept appraisals executed by certified independent appraisers.

The reality is that many historic homes have relatively low structure values compared to their market value. Consequently, many of these properties do not have the FEMA allowance necessary to support the remodels that may be desired by the homeowner, or even necessary in order to make the property comfortable.

In certain municipalities it is possible to undergo consecutive permits, meaning separate projects within a property’s FEMA allowance can be performed consecutively. However, many municipalities are implementing time restrictions to FEMA allowances. For example, in St. Pete Beach, a homeowner must limit improvements to their property’s FEMA allowance within a 5-year period. An exception to this rule is homes which are Historically Registered. The project featured here is a home remodel completed by Strobel Design Build that was exempt from FEMA restrictions as it was historically designated.

A solution that coastal historic home homeowners are exploring more and more is the route of lifting a home’s structure to above base flood elevation, and setting them on new, compliant foundations. Once the lowest living floor is sitting above base flood, it is considered to be a compliant structure and no longer subject to the FEMA allowance restrictions.

Ultimately it is important for homeowners to do their research on the FEMA restrictions their home may be subject to whenever considering a remodel. Experienced and informed contractors will be an integral part of this research. A competent contractor will be able to walk clients through the restrictions they are subject to, collaborate with clients on what their options are, and identify which option is the best course of action for the homeowner.

Choosing the right contractor

Home remodeling in any form is an intimidating affair, even more so when one adds the additional complexity of the remodel taking place on a historic home. The contractor chosen for the project can make or break the experience, not to mention the final result. There are multiple factors that should be considered when deciding on a contractor.

First, it is important to note that most historic home renovation projects begin with the need for a design and likely engineered architectural drawings. There are two main paths that can be taken in this. “Design-Bid-Build” is a process where the client hires an architect directly to collaborate with in the development of plans that can be presented to contractors for estimates and bids. The benefit to this is that clients are able to work closely with the architect on designs. The downside to this is that it is challenging for clients to anticipate the cost of the different design options during the design process.

The second option is “Design-Build,” in this process firms are composed of both builders and designers on staff. The benefit of a design-build firm is that the design process includes feedback

40 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2023
SPL LIVING

and collaboration from both a general contractor and an architect, giving the client a well-rounded understanding of project feasibility and economics. In a design-build project, the client is typically able to determine project costs and timeline early on in engagement with their chosen firm.

The level of experience in historic homes of the architect and/or contractor being engaged is of paramount importance. A contractor with experience remodeling historic homes is going to be better equipped to determine the unique needs of individual projects based on their specific characteristics. In order to determine if a given contractor is up to par with their project, potential clients should review photos of completed work and interview contractors on their experience level and comfortability in older homes. Years in business is also a telling indicator of several things, including a positive reputation in their community as well as a high degree of familiarity with the homes and projects in your area.

When considering hiring a contractor, before all else, a client should confirm regulatory compliance. Each licensed contractor is issued a license number that you can search and confirm on the website for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Additionally, there are professional organizations that contractors can elect to be members of which offer additional credentials and certifications and set higher standards. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI Tampa Bay) is a great example of this.

Strobel Design Build has been a member of NARI for over 20 years and has won over 100 awards for their design-build projects through NARI and other professional organizations, including “Remodeler of the Year” for 2022. If you are considering a waterfront, beachside, or historic home remodeling project, they are the most qualified firm in the Tampa Bay area to turn your vision into reality.

Record-breaking condo sale in St. Pete.

he St. Pete sky is the limit, literally, with this stunning full floor Ovation condo which was recently sold by Rafal Wazio, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. The home, encompassing 7,300 sq ft., was featured in the March/April issue of St. Pete Life Magazine. This sale surpassed the previous record high condo sale of the penthouse at Vinoy Place which sold for $7.3 million last year. The 22nd floor luxury condo located at 180 Beach Drive NE sold for an astonishing $7.45 million.

Wazio stated that the new homeowners, who were from the Midwest, were adamant about having the best view of Tampa Bay, and they surely accomplished that. He went on to say “the double-width view from a 22nd floor elevation, that is wholly unobstructed, sold the buyer. With seven balconies, four bedrooms, a double-sided living and family room and views of Tampa Bay, downtown Tampa, Albert Whitted Airport, Skyway Bridge and all of the downtown St. Pete skyline panoramas.”

St Petersburg continues to be a highly sought after location for people looking to relocate from all over the country. The city where we live continues to be the top choice for many to LIVE, WORK & PLAY.

Creating the ideal living space means something different to everyone. It reflects individual tastes and personalities, and for most the end goal is to turn a house into a home. You can go with the latest styles or tailor your décor to reflect your individuality. Whether your space is for one person or a family will guide your decisions

as well as the purpose of the space. Even pets (often considered family) can affect some design elements.

We spoke with industry experts about the latest trends in their fields, and what homeowners might need to know before starting a project.

Kaley Connelly, Connelly & Co. Studio www.connellyco.studio

What trends are you seeing in the home design industry? Today’s design trends stem from a historic style, and are being channeled into spaces in new ways. Some styles that I personally have been loving recently are the mix of old and new, and the use of collected and vintage pieces throughout the home. One of my favorite aspects of the design process is incorporating personal pieces from a client’s travel. It brings interest to a space and helps tell the story of the people who live there.

What are the hottest colors right now?

I am seeing a wide assortment of colors being used. I am gravitating towards earth tones, creamy warm whites, and bluegreens. I also love natural stone pieces with a ton of texture, especially travertine and onyx.

What is your favorite part of the home design process?

My favorite part of the design process is the early planning stages because it’s when I can be the most creative and push the boundaries a bit with different design concepts. I love being able to help a client bring their vision to life and create a space that they love to spend time in.

What is the most challenging part of designing or redesigning a home?

There are always unforeseen issues that arise during a renovation, such as timeline delays or unexpected project costs. An important role of a designer is helping to problem solve when these issues do arise, and acting as a resource for clients to keep the project moving forward successfully.

What advice would you give a homeowner who is considering designing or remodeling their home?

It’s important to find a team of people who you trust to help guide you through the process. There are so many small details and decisions that go into a renovation, so having a collaborative team is key.

Custom spaces within the home, whether a closet or office, can be challenging to tailor to specific needs.

while custom closets are growing in demand here in Florida, there’s also increased demand for pantry systems, entryways, entertainment centers, home offices and garage cabinetry.

What is one of your favorite design projects?

My most recent favorite project was turning an extra bedroom into an office/large closet. It is gaining in popularity and is called the “cloffice.” Working from home has become the new normal for many and you might not have an entire room to dedicate for the office so we are blending an office in a closet or a closet in the office. I want my clients to enjoy their space whether it’s for work, family or play.

Are you seeing trends in certain color schemes this season?

I like to design with a timeless style and not follow too many trends. That being said I’m seeing brass accents, colorful and/or textured cabinetry and open shelving. Wood in its natural raw state is trending, and creams and browns are back.

For insight, SPL spoke with a designer who has specialized in this arena for 18 years.

What are some of the hottest trends you are seeing in your industry right now?

Natural colors are a growing trend but white is still in the lead. Mid-century Modern (think Frank Lloyd Wright) is all the rave and you must “light up” your closet and cabinets with ribbon or puck lighting. Add glass doors and you’ve got it styled. Also,

What is the most common reason(s) your clients want or need to redesign space in their home?

Common reasons my clients want and need me, and Closet Factory, is to get beautiful, custom cabinets. I ensure that their closet, office, entertainment center or bar will become a functional, organized, and totally stylish space. I collaborate with my clients to design the perfect fit for the way they live every day. My designs create usable space and turn a home into a sanctuary with a place for everything and where everything is in its place. I call it the art of organization.

What sets Closet Factory apart from other companies?

smell can all indicate problems.

What are the benefits of trenchless technology vs. traditional/older replacements?

Extreme cost savings to the homeowner is the main benefit. Replacing plumbing using traditional systems causes massive damage to the home. Our website has a cost savings calculator that helps homeowners realize the money and time they can save. Our trenchless technology takes two to three days. Traditional replacement takes two to three weeks when factoring in the plumbing repair and cosmetic repairs.

What many homeowners may not know is that there can be issues hidden in or around the house. These are not necessarily the pretty parts of a home, but problems with functionality can cause major unseen and potentially costly problems. We asked a local pro how to identify and solve problems that occur with aging cast iron pipes in older homes.

What are the signs a homeowner should recognize that can indicate a failing system? Slow drains, frequent back-ups, gurgling sounds, or a sewage

APT is the largest residential pipelining company in Florida, completing over 600 jobs per year. The trenchless technology is our specialty where other plumbing companies dabble in it.

What is a key piece of advice you would give a homeowner that has a failing system?

Call us as soon as possible for our free inspection. Unfortunately time is not on your side when most of these systems have severe deterioration.

Bored with static painted walls? Want to liven up a room or space? Give wallpaper a try. With a craving for individualized homes to reflect personal styles, wallpaper is a wonderful way to achieve this design goal, says Brooke Eversoll, St. Pete designer and owner of Bee Studios. Her stunning work with wallpaper as seen on these pages inspired us to dig in for a deeper understanding. She was happy to share her expertise in this interview.

Is wallpaper trending now — are you seeing an increased interest?

Wallpaper is absolutely seeing a place in the market right now. The majority of wallpaper is not overly expensive, and covers a lot of surface area, so you can get a lot of design impact for your money.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of wallpapering a room?

The advantage of using wallpaper is that one can incorporate a unique element to a room that complements the design. Wallpaper can be sweetly simple like a subtle texture which is unachievable by plain paint, but adds a

uniqueness. Some textures are showstoppers, and the walls become the talk of the room. Wallpaper can be also be bold and full of personality, making a statement. Wallpaper is also very durable, and can last years longer than regular paint.

The disadvantage is that you can’t just paint over the walls to get a new look, you need to hire a professional to hang and remove wallpaper. If you are someone who likes to change your room design frequently, or tire of your décor, wallpaper may not be for you.

What types of wallpaper are popular here in Florida residences?

In higher traffic areas we tend to recommend vinyls. The residential market for vinyl wallpaper has come a long way. Years ago, vinyls were predominately a commercial product with limited selections and a very commercial look. With the increased popularity of residential wallpaper, many companies are introducing more and more vinyls. You can get vinyl papers in murals or bold patterns. You can also get vinyls that mimic concrete, leather, linen, wood veneer, etc. The sky is the limit with design ideas!

We have also used true wood veneer wallpapers, hand block printed papers, grass cloths, and many others.

Which rooms/walls do you like to recommend for wallpaper? Are there any general guidelines to follow in small spaces vs. large spaces? Accent walls? What about walls with art?

We use wallpaper to complete a design of a space. We are not limited to small or large rooms. In a larger room we will tend to use a more subtle pattern that can complement and balance many elements. We tend to go more bold with selections in smaller rooms such as a powder bathroom.

For accent walls we would use wallpaper behind a bed wall in a bedroom, most other rooms are fully wallpapered. We love incorporating wallpaper in ceilings, as well. We have wallpapered ceilings in bedrooms, home offices, dens, and even recently a kitchen.

I just completed an art gallery design for a modern home that used a vinyl wallpaper that looked like textured concrete. Instead of hanging art directly to the wall, we installed a floating gallery rail with cables in front of the wallpaper. You can also hang art directly on wallpaper walls. There are two rules: 1) Find a piece of art that you love and will rarely change. 2) If you like to change out your art a lot, consider a standard size frame that you have a selection of art pieces that same size to swap as you want.

What’s up with wallpaper on the ceiling?

The ceiling is the “5th wall” in the design world and not to be overlooked. Whether it’s an accent paint color, a paint the same as the walls, or a wallpaper – it’s an unexpected place to have fun with the design. Most wallpaper we specify for the ceiling is bold and patterned- which is a fun surprise.

On the Road to Jazz Stardom

From Rio with love, Nate Najar never forgets his musical hometown heroes

For years, St. Petersburg native Nate Najar has spellbound audiences with his versatile mastery of the guitar, but the jazz artist possesses other gifts.

For starters, he can take you on a journey down his personal memory lane while driving on California’s U.S. 101 Highway in Los Angeles. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, just hours after he teamed with Brazilian singer/songwriter Daniela Soledade for an August performance at a Los Angeles County Museum of Art concert in Hancock Park, the couple glows about their bossa nova/samba collaborations.

They’re looking forward to returning home to play October’s Clearwater Jazz Holiday and November’s Suncoast Jazz Festival on Sand Key.

Yet it’s the winding musical road Najar took to reach this new zenith that prompts him to look back with amazement. His voice rises with excitement as he reflects on the diversity of performances he’s delivered all around St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay for decades. He traces it all back to the love affair that started as an 11-year-old when he heard a Delta blues guitarist playing near his home. That set him on a journey that spanned blues, jazz, soul, R&B, gospel and ultimately bossa nova.

Along the way, his “steamrolling” desire to play guitar led to meaningful relationships, multiple performances and touring gigs with an array of stars including Tampa-born saxophone star Eric Darius, and Mexican-American saxophonist Jessy J. Ultimately, he connected with such greats as guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli and Gene Bertoncini, trumpeter Clark Perry and pianists George Shearing and Ray Kennedy. Not to be overlooked is famed double bassist John Lamb, once a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and now a St. Petersburg resident who Najar considers a mentor and family member.

But it largely started with local jazz legend Shawn Brown.

“The minute I could play the guitar all I wanted to do was go play the guitar somewhere,” Najar said. “I was 16 years old the first time I played with Shawn Brown. I snuck into Le Bordeaux (in Tampa).

I finally had a driver’s license … and he let me sit in. Playing with Shawn Brown, up there singing Luther Vandross like he means it.

“Then Shawn called me one time for a gig. It’s just unbelievable. I played with him off and on for 20 years, and solidly for a decade. I’ve got those experiences and everything that branched out from that. I met Sly Stone – I met Sly Stone! – because of Shawn Brown. All those experiences come together because you played it and you heard it.”

Najar speaks with reverence when he references his musical influences, but perhaps no one shaped his path as much as Charlie Byrd, the jazz guitarist largely credited with introducing bossa nova to American audiences. Much like when he heard the blues guitarist, he immediately took a liking to the smooth, sultry sounds of Byrd’s classical nylonstring guitar.

It stoked such a passion that when Najar met Solidade in 2018, they immediately clicked. Introduced by Phill Fest, a guitarist and son of jazz pianist Manfredo Fest, Nate calls it a serendipitous encounter.

“When Daniela and I met, I was enamored that no matter what tune I mentioned, she knew everything about the tune,” Najar said. “She knew the melody, she knew the lyrics, she knew the history. It was fascinating. For her, she could call the tune and I could play it.”

Now, as Solidade says, they’re partners in “life, love and music.” Najar says he doesn’t want to hear anyone sing but Daniela. He calls her the princess of Rio and with good reason. She has bossa nova and jazz samba in her heart with a grandfather (Paulo Soledade) who composed with some of the bossa nova creators and owned a club, the Copacabana, where the inception of that music happened.

Soledade also drew influence from her father who plays bass and owns a recording studio where top bossa nova stars recorded. She always heard stories about the artists who are now her idols, and some of the idols came out for an impromptu concert when she and Najar returned to Brazil earlier this year.

Like Najar, she mixes her lifetime experiences with new influences

to put a unique stamp on her performances. These are two musicians who easily could be talking about a rich stew when they describe their music.

“I’m a product of all the music I listened to growing up,” Soledade said. “I feel like it’s ever evolving. Every album is a little different. Every album is a new phase. We’re always growing. We’re always having new experiences. We always have a different moment of the artistry in mind.”

At the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Soledade will take the lead with a samba/soul journey to paradise at an afternoon free concert in Coachman Park on Sunday, October 22, backed by Najar’s band. Najar says, “imagine if Sade was from Brazil.”

At the Suncoast Jazz Festival, Najar and Soledade will offer a variety of stylings. The multiple shows will include Soledade’s “With

Rio From Love,” a smooth, bossa nova jazz samba set, and “Daniela Sings and Swings,” when she does all jazz tunes. Najar will add a jazz guitar set.

To get a preview, stream Najar’s Jazz Pra Sempre, the 2022 album that pays homage to Byrd and Stan Getz and features Soledade on two tracks. You also can stream her recordings, including the single Ligia. In 2024, Soledade’s latest album, Deco Tropicale, will debut with Najar serving as producer.

It’ll again be a tasty blend of musical genres.

Improving Through Improv

If there ever was a cheerleading squad for the power of improvisation, Carolyn Ramsey would be the team leader. By day, she manages an office for a staffing solutions company. But on weekends, she can be found at Spitfire Comedy House guiding a diverse cross-section of people into a world of unscripted interactions involving creative challenges and problem solving.

Ramsey teaches improvisation, a craft she has honed over decades of acting and directing at community theaters. To the casual observer, improv appears to be a slap-dash attempt at pulling imaginary characters and scenes out of thin air, a test of a performer’s cleverness and wit. In reality, the acting method allows individuals to work on personal strengths and weaknesses and a variety of other skill sets. The comedy that can result is the reward for both the performer and the audience.

At Spitfire, the demand for improv classes is high, according to general manager Hadas Cassorola. A six-week Intro to Improv class is generally sold out in advance and the drop-in classes on Sunday are usually filled with up to 30 participants.

People are turning to improv classes for different reasons. In a recent six-week Intro to Improv course, 15 students each arrive with different backgrounds and motivations. Some comments on why they signed up:

“I am super shy and struggle with speaking” … “I struggle with anxiety and wanted to do something that would force me out of my comfort zone” … “I’m a pre-school teacher constantly around small children; this is an outlet for me to meet new people” … “I am very introverted and wanted to try something new. My motto about coming here was to get serious about having fun.”

The class is Morel Miller’s big foray into stepping out of his comfort zone and trying something challenging. He admits to being an introvert. “I’m taking improv to become a little more open socially,” the 25-year-old confesses. “I enjoy music and acting so I’m exploring to see where I can go with it. … I feel like I am gaining a lot of necessary skills in this class, it’s quite a different experience and I feel it’s worthwhile.”

A local comedy club offers anyone the chance to spread their wings
Students gather around instructor David Morelli during an exercise held during a Sunday Drop-In Improv Class at Spitfire Comedy House.

Another class participant, 25-year-old Jeff Wait, is establishing himself in the Tampa Bay area as a standup comic. He previously acted in community theater before deciding to try standup. Now he’s on stage about five nights a week, he says. His reason for taking an improv class is to strengthen his comedy skills.

“My biggest weakness as a standup is forgetting what I was going to say, when I just freeze up,” he explains. “I figured taking an improv class would make me more confident without a script. Carolyn has taught us that life is improv, there is no script day to day and there are a lot of opportunities to improvise, to feel confident and be a better communicator… I feel so much more prepared for those moments.”

“You will find every walk of life, every age, every culture, in our classes and that’s what makes improv successful,” explains Ramsey. “We are building a community that is comfortable and able to be very transparent with one another and participate at whatever level you want.”

For shy or introverted people, Ramsey says, performing improv is a way to work on overcoming personal fear and pressure of interacting with other people. For the outgoing and playful, it’s a way to get their creative juices flowing. For public speakers, improv teaches deep listening, focused attention, and openness to others. Improv is also credited with strengthening the capacity to cope with uncertainty, manage anxiety and depression, and boost creative thinking.

An article in Psychology Today references a 2020 study “Improv to Improve” in the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. The study found “that improv promotes peoples’ ability to find creative and resourceful solutions and that therefore it can help us to think in more diverse ways or even break away from ingrained patterns of behavior.” The other finding was that improv improved participants’ self-esteem and self-confidence.

What is improv?

There are different types of improv from improv games (often called short form), to improv scenes (often called long form) to full length improvised plays, usually with a genre (often called narrative improv). But in all of them, the performer is challenged to think with split-second imagination. There are no scripts in improv, and the audience usually sets the stage for the characters and scenes.

“For me, it began as a fun, new acting outlet and something to try, and a way that I even was able to perform with two of my three kids,” says Ramsey. “Moving forward six years, I have found a literal family and a community that I care for far beyond my time on the stage. … Local theater at its core is a true community and you will find a literal family. Not by blood but by choice … and a lot of laughs.”

Let the games begin

At its most basic level, improv lessons are games, and Carolyn Ramsey has lots of them on her list. On this Sunday afternoon, it’s the final session of a six-week Intro to Improv class, a last chance to prepare for a final showcase next weekend when family and friends are invited to be in the audience.

Above, students practice the art of intent listening to conduct an exercise in rapid response. Below, Morel Miller and Jeff Wait (center) engage in quick-fire improv with Sam Teal, left, and Hunter Stanford.

In the 38-seat theater, she takes a seat at a podium with a giant bell at her fingertips and they are off to the races. She leads her class through a series of interactive games aimed at kick-starting the brain and finding a creative solution to finish a thought or a scenario with other performers. “I teach listening with your eyes and your ears,” Ramsey explains.

The game of Challenge asks participants to challenge a topic in two sentences. The audience yells out the challenge: Pop Tarts vs. Cereal, Army vs. Navy, Icey vs. Slurpee. When the bell dings the game is over.

In the Advice game, Ramsey instructs each person to pick a name and personality and introduce yourself as an expert. One is an expert on waterslides, another is knowledgeable in squirrels and trees, another is a professional digeridoo player. Advice questions come from the audience. Why do squirrels eat nuts? What happens after we die? What’s the key to happiness? What really happened in Roswell?

In the Remote Possibilities game, every ring of the bell means changing the genre of the scene in a split second, for example from a horror movie to a romantic comedy to a Broadway musical. As the audience yells out topics, the students must immediately launch into a new way of thinking.

Between games, Ramsey offers bits of advice and positive pep talk about “being yourself” and “helping your fellow performers.”

“Improv scenes can go in a million different directions,” she tells the class. “It’s unpredictable, like life, but don’t overthink it, on stage your thoughts will come. … Whatever your answer, you need to say it with utter and complete confidence.”

Drop-In classes

As the class wraps up, out in the lobby a line of people stretches out the door waiting to plunk down $20 for a session of Drop-In Improv. They hang out at the bistro tables chatting before instructors Zach Mouriz and David Morelli split the group of about 35 in half. One group heads to the theater and stage with Morelli, the other stays in the lobby with Mouriz.

“Sunday Drop-In is extremely popular,” says Mouriz. “A lot of people who come are regulars, showing up a couple times a month. Then others will be first-timers who are curious and just want to try it out. Some might even just watch and not participate, and that’s totally fine. We don’t make anyone do anything if they are not comfortable.”

Many of the participants today appear to be regulars, they are good at improvising and it shows. Today’s theme is Human Connection and Honesty and the exercises work on eye contact and speaking honestly. In one exercise, the participants use personal memories to create an improv sketch, or ask for help relaying a problem that needs to be solved.

At the start of each session, for both classes and drop-ins, the participants form a circle. “Circles are important for self-validation so the first-timers feel part of the group,” David Morelli says. The instructors are gentle and kind with their critiques, offering both positive feedback and suggestions on improving interaction and dialogue.

Two first-timers at the drop-in class today are Kendall Tobin and Tristan Beasley-Painter of St. Petersburg. The couple is active socially and “we like to try different things,” says Tobin, a 30-yearold paralegal. After the class, she said she enjoyed it because it “allowed me to tap into my emotions and creativity.” She said the couple will likely come again because “it’s a learning opportunity.”

Carolyn Ramsey concurs with that assessment.

“What improv does is not transform you into another person, it just finds those parts in you that you didn’t know you had,” she says. “We don’t do things if we are afraid of them. It doesn’t mean we are a different person if we do them.

“In improv, failure is imperative and that is going to happen in life. The difference is we celebrate it here.”

Annual Mammograms: 30 Minutes a Year for Peace of Mind

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in their lives, the National Cancer Institute says. Early detection is crucial for treatment and survival. Proper screening — starting with self-exams at home, clinical breast exams and regular mammograms — lets health-care providers check for possible issues even before a woman notices any signs or symptoms.

For most women of average risk, an annual mammogram should become part of your self-care routine in your 40s.

“You can think of it like going to the dentist for your cleaning. It’s a routine screening, and not something to be anxious about,” says Dr. Michael Hwang, a board-certified radiologist who serves as director of breast imaging at Bayfront Health Medical Group in St. Petersburg.

The recommended age to begin mammograms has changed over the years, but Dr. Hwang says most experts agree 40 is the new

standard. “The reason we want to start screening at age 40 is studies show the 40- to 50-year-old subset can develop breast cancers,” he says. “The smaller an in situ pre-cancer is, the easier the treatment is and the better the outcomes for the patient.”

Early detection is critical

“While the vast majority of mammograms are negative, if your mammogram can pick up on a small ‘in situ’ tumor — meaning one that is pre-invasive and has not spread into surrounding breast tissue — the survival rate is 99%,” Dr. Hwang says.

Five-year breast cancer-specific survival rates are excellent even for more localized breast cancer cases: 99% survival for Stage 1 and 9099% for Stage 2 if caught in time.

This is why a mammogram every year is so vital. Think of it as a 30-minute investment of time that can pay off in peace of mind for an entire year.

72 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2023 SPL HEALTH

“If an undetected cancer developed two years ago, but you didn’t come in for three years, that’s a lost opportunity for the patient and for us” because the tumor will have grown over time, Dr. Hwang says. “We always want to catch cancers as early as possible.”

Anxiety over the mammogram procedure is a common reason why some women put them off, “but it’s important to keep in mind that even if you’re called back, it’s usually a benign finding,” Dr. Hwang says. “The benefits of catching and treating a cancer early far outweighs the ramifications of some women experiencing anxiety. It’s better to just come in.”

Some women also express concerns about radiation. But mammograms are very low-dose X-rays, and the risk of harm from their radiation is extremely low, experts say.

A typical mammogram exposes a woman to a miniscule amount of radiation compared with what we receive just from walking around living everyday life. The average annual radiation dose per person in the U.S. is about 6 millisieverts (mSv), much of that from natural sources in the environment. That’s fifteen times as much radiation as a mammogram (0.4 mSv).

Importance of self-exams

Although a self-exam at home is highly unlikely to detect the smallest of tumors, it’s still a good idea for women to examine their breasts monthly and alert their health-care providers if they notice any changes. Women should especially be aware of any new lumps, thickening, discharge in only one nipple, bloody or clear nipple leakage, or other changes in how the breasts feel.

But which breast changes tend to be less of a concern? Breast pain that is throughout both breasts or in line with one’s menstrual cycle, while unpleasant, typically isn’t a sign of a serious medical problem, Dr. Hwang says. “In some cases, pain can be caused by cysts, which

are harmless. We see cysts all day long.”

Still, a self-exam doesn’t even come close to being a substitute for your annual mammogram. In the rare event that a mammogram detects a problem, treatment is not one size fits all at Bayfront Health Medical Group. Because each woman and each case is unique, the Bayfront oncology and surgical team create a customized plan of care each time. This may consist of some combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

“It all depends on what type of cancer and how early you detect it,” Dr. Hwang says. “The earlier it’s detected, the less complex and involved the treatment will be.”

What about menopause? The end of a woman’s menstrual cycle does not mean the end of her annual mammogram.

With women living longer lives, most breast radiologists are on the same page: Keep doing it as long as you’re in good health — meaning that you would still be a good candidate for treatment in the event that anything is caught.

“I see lots of women in their 80s these days who are super healthy, and we want them to keep living their fantastic lives,” Dr. Hwang says.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each year in the United States, more than 250,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and roughly 42,000 women will die from the disease. Men can also get breast cancer, however not as common. About 1out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.

Gulfport Photo Exhibit Focuses Lens on Breast Cancer Survivors

Photographer Michelle Caudle is a storyteller, and the stories she tells with her camera are intimate and heroic, personal and universal. She captures great lovers and warriors, the delicate and injured, and those made whole again. Caudle photographs breast cancer and domestic violence survivors whose injuries have been restored and beautified by the hands of skilled tattoo artists.

“Art communicates through emotion,” says Caudle. “You never know how sharing a piece of art might change the course of one’s life. You never know who might need to hear what you have to say; you never know how your life experience will help another going through a similar situation.”

An exhibition of Caudle’s work opens on Friday, October 6, from 6-9pm at Gulfport’s Brenda McMahon Gallery as part of the Gallery’s commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the show, Caudle will exhibit photographic works of breast cancer survivors who have turned pain into passion and her work will be on display

throughout the month. Shares Gallery owner and host Brenda McMahon: “For us, the message is radical self-acceptance: Our bodies, our lives. We are showing the world what strength looks like from a woman’s point of view.”

“Our breasts have been sexualized and used to define us our whole lives,” adds McMahon. “To lose them is something unimaginable. To reclaim them, and reclaim our definition of female and beauty creates a tectonic cultural shift that vibrates through every woman, whether or not she has personally had that experience.”

Caudle is honored to be part of the gallery’s monthlong celebration: “We are intrinsically connected to the unique stories and life events that shape who we are,” says Caudle of the exhibit. “Sharing our stories can be extremely important to not only our personal journey of healing and transformation, but can assist others in their own life of growth, acceptance and love, and I hope this show reaches those it can benefit.”

Brenda McMahon Gallery is contributing 10% of all sales in the month of October to The Affirmations Project, which will have an informational booth set up outside with representatives on hand to discuss the project during the exhibit’s opening on October 6. Additionally, the gallery is featuring Gulfport tattoo artist Samantha Roberts’ Mother Ocean Studio, which provides delicately designed areola restoration tattoos for cancer survivors, and selling blownglass pink pumpkins by renowned Tampa artist Susan Gott as part of their fundraising efforts for the group.

“I love the power, dignity and vulnerability of this art show,” says McMahon. “Women are defining beauty and strength on our own terms! As always, art has a way of piercing social norms, of redesigning old concepts to fit today’s reality and tomorrow’s vision. The Affirmations Project is doing beautiful work and we’re honored to support them.”

The Affirmations Project was founded in 2016 by cancer and domestic violence survivor Adriana Pabon. Their main event is an annual gala featuring the unveiling of a photo gallery showcasing

survivors with their words of affirmation painted on their bodies. The survivors also share their inspirational stories to bring healing and hope to others who may be going through the same struggles - a reminder that they are not alone and that there is always hope.

“It’s a group of loving and vibrant individuals who hope to help others overcome their struggles by sharing their own with the world,” Caudle says of the Project.

Clearwater Jazz Holiday Returns to Downtown Clearwater

After two years away from its Coachman Park home, Clearwater Jazz Holiday is back in the heart of downtown Clearwater at the transformed waterfront park and its new venue The Sound. And no one is happier than Steve Weinberger, CEO of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation, the 501 (c)(3) which produces the annual event. “We are beyond excited to be back at Coachman Park,” Weinberger says.

Now in its 44th year, the popular four-day event set for October 19-22, relocated to BayCare Ballpark (formerly Spectrum Field) while construction for the Imagine Clearwater downtown waterfront redevelopment project was underway. The upgraded Coachman Park, nestled below the causeway to Clearwater Beach, has added three acres of green space and landscaping, a gateway plaza connecting to downtown, a splash pad and play area, lighting and more. The centerpiece, The Sound amphitheater, features 4,000 covered seats with space for seating on the lawn. Covered seating for the Jazz Holiday will be similar to past festivals, with VIP seats taking up the front ten rows and a special Backstage Bistro.

This year’s festival promises more of the same diversity of performers as in previous years, with a new addition – two days of free jazz music at three performance areas. The added daytime concerts on Saturday and Sunday are offered in part to provide

added value to the community and ticket-holders who may feel that the jazz genre has been getting short shrift in recent years. Headliners like this year’s Beach Boys (Thursday), Gladys Knight (Friday), Buddy Guy (Saturday) and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Sunday), often fall into the pop/rock/blues categories.

“The daytime concerts will feature 18 jazz performers in Coachman Park and Station Park, “ says Weinberger. “These are all going to be jazz – everything from straight-ahead to Latin, fusion, swing, and contemporary. Best of all they are free, and we’ll have the Beer Pier open and food trucks so people can bring lawn chairs and enjoy the day.”

With the new venue, also comes new pricing and fans will notice increased ticket pricing. “Our expenses have increased, as the cost of renting the venue and the cost of top national acts has also gone up in recent years,” explains Weinberger. In addition, added restrictions have been put in place by the City of Clearwater for ticket holders to The Sound. No lawn chairs, umbrellas, backpacks, coolers or pets are allowed, even in the lawn area.

“My best advice if you’re going to come is to review The Sound web site and familiarize yourself with the entry restrictions, parking and entrances to the park before leaving home,” says Weinberger.

The 33rd Annual Suncoast Jazz Festival will return to Clearwater’s Sand Key November 17-19, featuring local, national and international performers from New Orleans, San Francisco and New York, to Italy, Brazil, Australia and Rio. Headlining this year is two-time Grammy Awardwinning Ranky Tanky, along with festival favorite Kermit Ruffins and his band, the Barbecue Singers. Grammynominated Brazilian jazz guitar wizard Diego Figueiredo will be back by popular demand.

Performances will be held inside two resort settings at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort and Marriott Suites. The three-day festival offers an array of music from Big Easy-flavored jazz and American Songbook to Gullah, modern acoustic, swing, blues, zydeco and a touch of rockabilly and gospel. Local jazz legends are once again making

appearances including John Lamb, the beloved double bassist who was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The musical line-up also includes dozens of local musicians including Nate Najar and Daniela Soledade, La Lucha, John O’Leary, Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, Ona Kirei, Jean Bolduc, Jeremy Carter and many others.

Performing Saturday night, Ranky Tanky is a Charleston-based quintet that specializes in jazz and blues-influenced arrangements of traditional Gullah music which is a culture that originated among descendants of enslaved West Africans in the Lowcountry areas. Back for the second year will be Kermit Ruffins, the charismatic jazz trumpeter, singer, composer and actor from New Orleans. He performs with his group the Barbecue Swingers both Friday and Saturday nights.

Dali Dome is Alive and Very Cool Experience

The anxiously awaited dome experience Dali Alive 360° opened August 3 after a three-week delay due to an air-conditioning electrical malfunction. Dali devotees will receive maximum coolness now if they add on this $15 experience to a regular museum admission (sorry, but no “dome only” ticket admissions).

If you were impressed with the immersive multi-media Van Gogh Alive production in 2021, you’ll find a similar concept in Dali Alive 360°. The 35-minute digital production was co-produced by the same Melbourne, Australia-based Grande Experiences using 11 separate projectors mounted in the ceiling.

Dalí Alive 360° is created specifically for the 360-degree environment of the Dalí Dome by Omnispace360, the creator of immersive environments seen at six Super Bowls. Constructed in the Museum’s Avant-

framework stands 39 feet tall and 60 feet in diameter. Visitors stand and walk freely inside the dome (minimal seating is offered around the perimeter, though) as the life and works of Salvador Dali come alive on the walls and floor and dramatic music fills the room.

The presentation celebrates the life of the eccentric Spanish surrealist who is considered one of the most influential and inventive artists of the modern era. Get ready for a wild wide as you are enveloped in 360 degrees of moving images that include many photographs of the artist’s life from his childhood in Spain, through his introduction to the surrealist circles in Paris, with his wife and muse Gala, to his life in America and finally his return to Spain.

Dali’s story is told through a series of written synopses and snippets of his own words that serve to give the viewer a deeper look

a dizzying experience for the Dali newbie with melting clocks, alien-like creatures and other iconic weirdness floating around the room, but hang in there – it’s well worth it. It’s obvious as the program progresses that Dali has evolved over the decades into an immensely intriguing and bizarre personality with an astounding body of work. Toward the end, we see images from his four Masterworks — The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus (1958-59); The Ecumenical Council (1960); Galacidalacidesoxiribunucleicacid —

Homage to Crick and Watson (1963) and The Hallucinogenic Toreador (1969-70) — which can be seen on permanent display in the museum.

For anyone planning to visit, I would suggest scheduling the Dali Dome experience first, then wander through the galleries where you’ll spot many images from the Alive show. Be sure to plan for at least two hours of time, or three if you include stops in the Gala Café and gift shop.

IF YOU GO

Dali Alive 360° is a $15 add-on to an admission ticket and can not be viewed separately. Timed tickets are required and can be purchased on the museum’s website at thedali.org/tickets

Many benefits to spay, neuter your pets

“Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.” That familiar phrase from Bob Barker, the former host of “The Price is Right,” is great advice.

Spaying or neutering your pets prevents accidental litters, meaning there are fewer homeless animals in local shelters, and it also provides important health and behavioral benefits for your pets, and our community. The procedures reduce pets’ susceptibility to certain diseases, and prevent unwanted behaviors like roaming and marking territories.

Other benefits of spaying and neutering your pets include: Increased life expectancy. Spaying a pet before she is six months old can increase her life expectancy by 12 to 18 months. Male dogs that are not neutered are more likely to roam, which puts them at risk of injury from traffic accidents or from fights with other dogs. Neutered dogs are less likely to roam.

Less likely to develop certain kinds of cancer. Spaying a cat before her first heat cycle (as young as six months old) can reduce her chances of contracting breast cancer to 1 in 20,000. Spaying also eliminates your pet’s risk of ovarian cancer. Neutering your male pet eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.

Eliminates going into heat. During breeding season, un-spayed female cats usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks. Spaying your cat eliminates behaviors like yowling and urinating around the house while in heat.

May be better behaved. Neutered pets are less likely to exhibit behaviors like marking their territory around the house or mounting other dogs, people or inanimate objects. While neutering your pet won’t solve all behavior issues, it can reduce undesirable behaviors.

Save on future veterinary bills. Female pets that are not spayed have a far greater chance of developing dangerous uterine infections, uterine cancer, and other cancers of the reproductive system. And spaying and neutering your pet is much less expensive than the cost of caring for an unplanned litter.

Dogs and cats should be at least three months old (12 weeks) before being spayed or neutered. It’s never too late to spay or neuter adult animals, but be aware that senior pets may face a greater risk of post-operative complications. Please remember there is no “one-age-fits-all” and check with your veterinarian or contact SPCA Tampa Bay’s Veterinary Center in St. Petersburg for age and weight recommendations. Those of us who grew up here know that unmistakable “Old Florida” feel you get when a song, an aroma, a memory or a place takes you back to a simpler time. Salt Water Suites is one of those places. Tucked away in North Redington Beach, it was originally built in 1938 and thoughtfully and thoroughly renovated in 2022 by a local husband/wife team that calls this their “Happy Place.”

The vintage décor is paired with all the modern conveniences you might need, with themes such as Summer Wind, Beach Vibes, and the Hideaway. Every suite was designed with a retro feel and there are thoughtful and whimsical touches everywhere you turn.

The entire property is wrapped in lush tropical landscaping that creates an island feel. Poolside tiki huts, pergolas and lanais are nestled amongst the palms and blooming bougainvillea. Performance-Driven Audi S6 is a Thrill of a Ride

S6 (PREMIUM PLUS)

Wheelbase: 115.3 inches

Length: 195 inches

Height: 56.9 inches

Width: 83.1 inches

Fuel capacity: 19.3 gallons

City: 19 mpg

Highway: 26 mpg

Base price: $73,700

Price as tested: $91,165

Web site: www.audiusa.com

It’s sporty, stylish and luxurious. To top it all, the 2023 Audi S6 also comes with the renowned quattro all-wheel drive that provides peace of mind in any road/weather condition. One cannot ask for a more graceful and energetic ride in the luxury midsize sedan segment than this Audi. Lest we forget, the S6 is performance-driven, too!

The 2.9-liter bi-turbo V-6 engine cranks out 444 horsepower and 443 pounds-feet of torque. This allows the sprightly sedan to accelerate to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, a major feat for a 4,486-pound vehicle. To fight turbo lag, it is equipped with 48-volt electric mild-hybrid capabilities, helpful during stop and go or while cruising the highway. An 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission results in a quiet and smooth drive train. An electronically controlled, adaptive air suspension system delivers admirable poise and stability. The potent brakes, which feature 15.8-inch front and 13.8-inch rear ventilated discs, have a firm pedal feel. They operate inside 21-inch V-spoke design wheels shod with 245/35 tires.

The aluminum-alloy structure-based S6 sports a massive double-slat single-frame grille with the familiar four Audi rings, which are flanked by matrix-design LED headlights. The rear gets four S-specific tail pipes and diffuser inlay in black chrome matte. The cabin is packed with all the luxury accoutrements expected in a ride of this class. A pleasing 12.3-inch digital instrument Cluster matches up well with dual black-gloss touch screens, a 10.1-inch upper display for navigation, radio and telephone controls while the 8.6-inch lower one is solely for

climate control and vehicle settings.

Offering a solid grip is the splendid and inimitable yachtlike shifter knob. Rear-seat passengers will enjoy abundant headroom and legroom. Our favorite was the red stitching on the Valcona black leather seats, a sight to behold! Also standard are a three-spoke power tilt/telescopic steering column, 12-way heated power front seats, rear manual sun shades, four-zone auto a/c, open/close power trunk, glossy piano black trim, Bang & Olufsen sound system with 16 speakers and Audi Drive Select so the driver can pick dynamic, comfort, auto or individual modes.

In the event of a possible collision, Audi pre-sense basic and front detects an emergency maneuver and prepares the vehicle and its occupants. Ten airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability/traction control, rearview camera, lane departure warning, front/rear parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights are standard.

Undoubtedly, the performance-oriented S6 is a blast to drive. Plus, it’s got the looks, exterior and interior, that should appeal to any potential luxury midsize sedan buyer. We expect this Audi to continue to give the competition (Mercedes and BMW, are you listening?) sleepless nights.
