Celebrating 10 Years

2019 NATIONAL WINNER Entire House Under $250,000

Multiple Award Winning Contractor! • Certified Remodeler • Certified Remodeling Project Managers • Certified Lead Carpenters • Universal Design Certified Professionals

Thank You! I started King Contracting on February 7, 2012 and it has been one heck of a fun ride! From remodeling kitchens and baths to building upscale room additions and custom homes, I have had the honor of working with many of you, the wonderful residents in our beautiful communities. Remodeling is challenging for everyone involved; for us, the contractors, the suppliers and the vendors, the sub-contractors and especially for you, the homeowner. I have always said, mistakes will occur but by gosh, I am going to make it right in the end and I think that philosophy is what has gotten us to the 10 year mark! I have also been privileged and honored to serve as a National Officer for The National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI) for the past 5 years. What a great organization, made up of the best remodelers and suppliers across the country! NARI is a source of a variety of educational topics for the remodeling industry that supports my goal of on-going training for my employees AND for myself. Many of my employees hold several NARI certifications and in the next issue of St. Pete Life, you will meet them!

This note is to all my past, current and future clients, “THANK YOU”! I also wish to thank my employees, my sub-contractors and suppliers for without their hard work, we would not be able to provide superior remodeling services to your home and to make your castle more functional and safer. “I would also like to thank my family and friends who have endured my “stories” and encouraged me when I needed it the most. Please come visit us at our new showroom and offices!

WELCOME TO SPL

Have you felt the excitement in the air? Spring has brought a renewed sense of optimism now that the pandemic seems to be winding down. People are more comfortable going out, dining in restaurants, attending concerts and festivals – and just in time. This is the season for getting out and enjoying the fabulous weather and all that St. Pete has to offer! For this reason, we are presenting our new Dining Guide in this issue. We have culled a listing of local favorites in St. Petersburg, all come recommended. Keep the issue handy, as it may be helpful when deciding on a new dining experience. In coming issues, we hope to expand our coverage area to the beaches, and include a number of bakeries, coffee shops and small cafes. You can also find the Dining Guide on our web site at stpetelifemag.com. This is our annual Real Estate Issue and as everyone knows, the St. Pete market is on fire. We offer you ideas for building, renovating and home design, and hope you will peruse our advertisers to assist you in finding or creating your dream home. The talent we have in this market is second-to-none. The downtown arts scene continues to excite and surprise us. We take a look at three diverse new exhibits worth exploring: The Dali’s Picasso and the Allure of the South; Bernini and the Roman Baroque at the Museum of Fine Arts; and the wacky, wonderful Fairgrounds St. Pete.

ARTS & CULTURE

Whimsical, wonderful Florida takes center stage at the Fairgrounds. Enter if you dare. PHOTOS/FAIRGROUNDS ST. PETE

BY MARCIA BIGGS It’s not exactly a museum, although over 60 local and international artists are presented in various forms. Some might call it an attraction for its many experiences. The busy yellow Doodle Wall at the entrance that beckons you inside definitely screams circus funhouse (it’s the handiwork of local muralist Chad Mize). And fun, it is. Fairgrounds St. Pete is 15,000 square feet of imagination under one roof that combines wacky and wonderful art installations, technology, video and sound, all in one way or another an homage to Florida. As visitors wander and explore the various rooms in the roadside Mermaid Star Motel, fantasy and reality meld. Escape reality, or become immersed in fantasy, it’s your choice. The ”grounds” of the motel are like a maze, drawing the visitor through the retro lobby into the pool area where a massive Flora-Da-Scope aimed at the sky offers a kaleidoscope universe of neon starfish and shells and palm trees rather than constellations. It was created by Aleisha Prather, Alex Kaufman and George Retkes, all Tampa Bay sculpture artists who have designed and fabricated large scale public art for Mark Aeling’s MGA Studio in St. Pete. Beyond the scope in the darkness something is watching. The 24-foot Wall of Eyes by Bec Conrad of Durham, NC, shows silhouettes of glowing eyes belonging to six animal species who make their home in the Florida Everglades. Can you tell which is which? Wander into the Everglades Arena space where you are greeted by twilight and a panoramic sunset in the Everglades. It’s

ARTS & CULTURE a 20-minute animated video on a 50-foot digital landscape made by Fairgrounds St. Pete in collaboration with Olivia Sebeskey. Here you can sit a spell and relax, but you can’t ignore the round CentCom room that resounds like a giant pinball machine. Step inside to find a 3-channel video installation where Nintendo 64 and PlayStation games have been corrupted and now play continual loops of patterns and sounds. It’s by Eddie Lohmeyer of Orlando. A fascinating experience awaits with Mike Hicks’ (Clearwater) A Mysterious Portal to the Bay. Look through a non-descript slot in the wall and you find yourself beneath a bridge on a warm summer night where you see and hear Tampa Bay stirring in the breeze with the skyline in the distance. It’s a merging of projection mapping, 3D modeling, 3D printing, audio and a lot more. In the Floridarama room, artists have designed custom dioramas offering a view into tiny worlds all reflecting versions of the Florida experience past, present and future. You’re not human if you don’t get a smile or two from Drive-In and Swamp Motel by Ashley Cantero of Tampa. In contrast, Babs Reingold of St. Petersburg offers The Last Sea, depicting a desolate scene of sand and debris where no life exists; it’s a warning for Florida if environmental issues are left unchecked. Mark Mitchell’s (St. Petersburg) Fountain of Youth is a satirical piece, poking fun at the tendency of so many aging Floridians who attempt to recapture their former youth. Continued on next page...

ARTS & CULTURE Fairgrounds St. Pete: The Concept After two years of planning, Fairgrounds St. Pete officially opened in December, spearheaded by a team of four enthusiastic entrepreneurs from Tampa Bay. The concept was the brainchild of Liz Dimmitt, an arts consultant and strategist who has helped produce other large arts experiences like Beach Tampa and Art of the Brick, a Lego exhibition, in Tampa. Wanting to create an immersive arts destination in St. Pete, Dimmitt (now Fairgrounds CEO) met and teamed up with Mikhail and Olivia Mansion who were behind OK! Transmit, an art and technology meet-up in St. Pete dedicated to building a community of artists and technologists. Mikhail took the lead on design and technology and is the Chief Creative Technology Officer, while Olivia is Director of Communications. COO and Managing Director The CentCom Room

ARTS & CULTURE Tyson Johnson came on board a short time later providing expertise in financial management and logistics operations. With financial backing and consulting support from philanthropists Jeff and Penny Vinik, the team was able to set the Fairgrounds in motion. The Viniks have long been recognized as strong supporters of the arts and technology in Tampa Bay. “From the start, Fairgrounds St. Pete set out to innovate in the fields of storytelling, art and technology,” said Dimmitt. “We immerse visitors in a playful narrative that celebrates the weird, wacky, wonderful aspects of Florida. Every visit to Fairgrounds St. Pete provides a new experience.” Why St. Pete? “We chose St. Pete because it has a beautiful tight-knit community which already celebrates arts and culture,” said Olivia Mansion. “Ninty percent of the artists who were commissioned are from Florida. When we share the concept, people always say, ‘This is so St. Pete.’ We are providing a platform for our creative community to come together, experiment and grow.”

Picasso

PHOTOS/THE DALI

BY MARCIA BIGGS It’s not often that the American public gets the opportunity to see a major exhibit of exclusively Picasso works, which is why The Dalí’s Picasso and the Allure of the South, is so important and impressive. The Musée national Picasso-Paris has loaned out nearly all of the 79 paintings, drawings and collages, almost half of which have never been seen in the U.S. The Dalí is the only venue worldwide to present the exhibition. Impressed yet? This is the second major exhibition featuring Picasso work at The Dalí, the first being in late 2014-early 2015 when 20 international museums and private collections loaned over 80 works for Picasso/Dalí, Dalí/Picasso. That exhibit presented works of the two masters side by side, showing the individual vision and creative force that made them two of the most influential modern artists of our time.

In this presentation, we are treated to an all-Picasso show, one that demands study and attention as it takes you through the many stages of a complex yet legendary artist. The famed 20th century master Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain, creating a voluminous archive of work before dying in 1973 at the age of 92. He received artistic training from his father, a traditional artist and instructor, starting at the age of 7. Picasso was a prolific painter, sculptor, poet and ceramist; some estimates claim he produced an estimated 50,000 artworks during his lifetime. He is probably best known for his mural masterpiece Guernica (1937), his powerful political statement in reaction to the Nazi’s bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso moved frequently between Spain and France, but some of his most creative periods took place during summer sojourns in the south of France along the Mediterranean Coast and in northern Spain. The artist was inspired by the regions’ geography, history, cultures and customs. This exhibit is filled with portraits and still lifes, figural studies and landscapes he produced dating from 1909 to 1973. It also includes interesting archival photographs of Picasso, his friends and his life.

ARTS & CULTURE Picasso was a pioneer of the Cubism movement that explored geometric shapes in the context of painting. His artistic style changed throughout his career, but he always maintained a unique insight into the human condition. His style was characterized by bold, contoured lines and distorted proportions, merging the representational and abstract and challenging traditional concepts of art. The Dalí exhibit follows the artist’s evolution through time, and is divided into four themes. The Birth of Cubism features a selection of drawings and collages that show Picasso’s early experimentation and the evolution of Cubism. From Cubism to Realism examines Picasso’s shift to a more playful approach to Cubist idioms. He dallies in unconventional portraits and landscapes, and architectural paintings that appear illogical in form. In the third section, Corridas de Sud (bullfighting), we see Picasso’s fascination with the sport through a series of intricate sketches and collages, even a

ceramic plate by the artist. The gallery is presented in brilliant orange and draws in the viewer with a mounted bull head and cape above a mural photograph of legendary Spanish bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguin with whom Picasso was infatuated. The exhibition concludes with Surrealism and Beyond, when Picasso’s painting turned to the unconscious and the impulsive. The artist was drawn to music and musicians, and especially the guitar which are often themes. Images of couples embracing became important to the aging artist. A final self-portrait, Le Baiser (The Kiss, 1969), shows the artist, old and balding, in an embrace with his second wife Jacqueline Roque. For the serious student of art masters, Picasso and the Allure of the South should not be missed.

What is Cubism?

Visitors to The Dalí can learn more about the genre by creating their own portrait in Cubism style through an artificial intelligence experience called “YOUR PORTRAIT.” Sit in front of an LCD screen and tap to capture your head shot. While your face is being mercilessly distorted and colorized (not for the faint of heart), your mouth moves to your forward, your eyes tilt sideways and your nose becomes your ear. But it’s great fun as you learn fun facts about Cubist imagery, compositions and color palettes. Your new visage can be texted or e-mailed, so you can share with friends and family.

Picasso and the Allure of the South continues through May 22. Advance-purchase timed tickets are required to visit The Dalí, go to TheDalí.org.

ARTS & CULTURE

Going for Baroque

Bernini and the Roman Baroque brings a world-class collection of rarely seen art to St. Petersburg

Carlo Maratti, called “Il Maratta” and Mario Nuzzi, called “Mario de’ Fiori”, The Summer, 1658-59, Oil on canvas, Palazzo Chigi, Ariccia.

BY MARCIA BIGGS The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg brings the masters of the Roman Baroque to Florida in a sweeping exhibit that captivates and titillates with the high drama that defines the art of the period. Bernini and the Roman Baroque: Masterpieces from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia features 55 paintings by some 40 artists who captured the cultural dynamics of the period in Italy from roughly 1600 to 1750. The collection features rarely seen and privately owned masterpieces from the illustrious and monied Chigi family, curated by Francesco Pettrucci of the Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, Italy. Paintings, prints and decorative arts make up this show, but no sculpture, which is surprising considering the Bernini title would imply otherwise. Only a handful of small Bernini decorative arts objects are actually on view; nonetheless, it’s a powerful show for

those who relish the opportunity to stand within inches of Baroque masterpieces. Rome was a leading center of the arts during the Baroque period. Encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church and the aristocracy to make the city one of unparalleled beauty “for the greater glory of God and the Church,” artists and architects of the period were commissioned to create elaborate works of art that depict Biblical history and mythology though religious and erotic imagery and spiritual forms. Many of the works in the MFA exhibit portray religious, mythological and allegorical subjects and events that relay messages about the brevity of human life, the role of divinely appointed rulers, and the

importance of traditional Roman Catholic faith. The Chigi family of Rome were enormously wealthy bankers who gained aristocratic titles and lands; the family included cardinals and a pope. One highlight of the collection, Portrait of Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1670) by Ferdinand Volet, depicts one such family member who enjoyed a position of wealth and privilege. Many portraits fill one of the two main galleries, portraying glorious scenes from the life and death of Christ, the Apostles, battles and uprisings, saints and sinners, and countless heavenly cherubs floating upon billowing clouds. A highlight of this gallery is Bernini’s bronze and gilded Hanging Lamp (1657, cast 1885). It shows his brilliance as a sculptor, with three cherubs in mid-air lifting a gilded crown to the heavens. The eight pointed stars on it were adapted from the Chigi coat of arms. Plan to spend a thoughtful couple hours visiting this exhibit in order to fully appreciate these often emotionally complex works. You will want to read the label copy with each to gain a deeper understanding of the works. Six of the highlight pieces are accompanied by a QR code. Take a photo of it on your smartphone, then tap on the link to hear Senior Curator of Exhibition and Collections Stanton Thomas briefly tell its story. He’s a great storyteller and will enrich the experience. Want more? Head to Italy. In 1988 the Chigi family sold the Chigi Palace to the municipality of Ariccia and it opened to the public in 1999. It remains a gilded palace of the Baroque age filled with furnishings and art — some commissioned, some acquired. The works in the MFA exhibit are from the palace’s collection. Bernini and the Roman Baroque: Masterpieces from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia continues through May 8. For more information, go to mfastpete.org

The James Museum brings together two masters of landscape photography, Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher, in two side-byside exhibits opening April 9. Ansel Adams: The Masterworks includes 32 black and white gelatin silver prints spanning four decades by the legendary photographer who was most recognized for iconic images of National Parks and the Southwest. A number of his most well-known images will be on display, such as Moonrise, Hernandez New Mexico; Aspens, Northern New Mexico; and Winter Sunrise, The Sierra Nevada. Florida photographer Clyde Butcher’s large-scale dramatic photographs reveal wild and natural places where few humans have ventured. He is most well-known for his iconic images of the Florida Everglades, often being referred to as “the Ansel Adams of Florida.” The exhibit Clyde Butcher: America the Beautiful shows a variety of his landscapes from all over the country. SPL LIVING

A sprawling 5,200-square-foot, 5-bedroom, 6-bath waterfront home on Snell Isle was given a facelift by Leslie Gross with Constructive Design Services. The complete renovation of the dated Tuscany style home into a transitional modern design included moving the existing pool, adding a remote-controlled pergola with outdoor fireplace and outdoor kitchen, along with opening the interior to the exterior for true Florida living. Modern bronze sunshades cover an arched entry and arched windows on the front to help with the transition. Black steel and glass entry doors and Euro-wall sliding panels along the back of the home and off the courtyard help complete the transition to a clean modern Florida home. A Julian Chichester gilded table makes a grand statement in the entry. This table also serves to showcase more of the homeowner’s extensive art collection. The new homeowners moved to St Petersburg to be near their daughter’s growing family and needed the home to be family friendly yet express their passion for good design and showcase their fabulous art collection. pieces and help create and coordinate the custom window treatments and colorful pillows, Gross called on her friend Chelsea Potthast, of Potthast Design, who has an incredible eye for fabulous furnishings, colors, textures, and patterns. The homeowners wanted a multi-purpose, playful space with indoor/outdoor living as they can be found with the doors thrown open most days and evenings. The courtyard fireplace is usually going on chilly mornings and evenings, and the courtyard fountain is a welcoming sound for guests. Potthast added brilliantly colored pillows to the outdoor banquet eating area by the new state of the art pool and to brighten up the modern Restoration Hardware outdoor furnishings. The heavy, ornate Tuscan feel of the interior was replaced with a modern iron railing, a modern beveled shell stone and black steel fireplace with modern square lighted niches to showcase the owner’s collection of sculpture pieces. A custom bar with backlit stone completes the bar area, just steps from the pool.

Did you know … St. Pete’s trash is sent to a Waste-To-Energy facility, where it is incinerated. This process produces usable energy and reduces the volume of trash by approximately 80-90%. The remaining waste is sent to a landfill, so it’s still vital that we reduce our waste. By making small everyday changes, everyone can help decrease the amount of waste that ends up in the trash, where it can produce greenhouse gases and other pollution.

What’s Trending in Outdoor Living

Photo Elegant Outdoors

BY MARCIA BIGGS Last year at this time, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, consumers were buying up inventory on outdoor furnishings at a record-setting pace. We followed up with Stephanie Stegman, merchandise manager for Elegant Outdoors in Bonita Springs, to see if things have changed and what to expect if you plan on upgrading or purchasing new outdoor furniture.

Florida has resulted in high demand for furnishings. People are entertaining again, looking for more furniture to accommodate more people and more areas to entertain. Big sellers for outdoor living include deep seating as in sofas and lounge chairs, and firepits. Large firepits and bigger dining tables in particular are in high demand due to bigger seating groups.

A few facts to keep in mind:

Gray continues to be a dominant color, but greens are trending outdoors. Coastal and beachy décor will always be a Gulf Coast design tradition. Blue and white cushions and pillows, umbrellas and rugs, will never go out of style.

If you want custom furniture, be prepared to wait … and wait. The delays in manufacturing and shipping remain high, with no signs of letting up. If you need it sooner than later, buy what’s in stock. “Lead times from manufacturers on custom orders are now 24 to 60 weeks, depending on the manufacturer,” said Stegman. “We do not see it getting better any time soon.” Price increases are a fact of life. Material shortages and freight rates are at an all-time high, said Stegman. For example, a container of furniture last year cost around $3,000 to ship. This year, one container is averaging $23,000 to $25,000, not including the cost of the furniture. More Floridians need more furniture. The national love affair with

Save a tree and opt for recycled plastic Adirondack chairs. They have been around for years, but are gaining popularity now for their durability and style. The heavy marine-grade polymer chairs come in a variety of colors with matching accessories. “They are a high-end recycled plastic that is durable and will last in our extreme Florida weather,” says Stegman. “You see it used for in-pool seating and outdoor dining, too.” Resin wicker couches and chairs in natural colors are popular now, too. 5 Color Trends for a Stylish Home

A cool, organic green (Blanched Thyme/Valspar) works beautifully for a natural and balanced look in a home office. /Photo from Valspar

A new year brings new opportunities to refresh your living space and add new colors into your life. These five trends are all about incorporating more of yourself and your lifestyle into your home, whether it’s answering your need for a serene escape or dialing up the energy with vibrant surroundings. Bring in Nature Soothing earthy tones help bring a sense of calm and balance indoors. When designing with nature in mind, use gray-green tones to connect your aesthetic with the serene elements of the outdoors. Incorporate nature’s palette with greens in fabrics, accessories and even on the walls. Wood and stone materials naturally complement these shades for a look that’s cohesively pleasing and peaceful. Stylish Sophistication If you’re aiming to infuse some sophistication with an update to a favorite space, opt for a monochromatic look in a dark (almost black) hue. The approach is simultaneously bold and classic, but the secret to this trend is finding a shade that’s rich and deep, but not quite black, then complementing it with fabrics and furnishings that let the hint of color shine.

Add Comfort and Warmth Treating your home like a sanctuary never goes out of style, and one way to create a soothing, inviting space is through the use of cozy neutrals. Whether it’s applied to a bedroom retreat or a more bustling space like the living room, a neutral palette can add to the allure of comfort and warmth. Keep the visual interest strong by incorporating subtle patterns, textures and layers of complementary neutral colors. Go Retro It may seem counterintuitive, but vibrant retro shades like orange and yellow, and even warmer neutrals, can help establish a calming vibe within your home. The throwback hues can help your mind connect to moments from the past when life may have been filled with less challenges. This trend with colors like Valspar’s Delightful Moon, Subtle Peach and Sunset Curtains is less about the actual look and more about the mood it evokes for you personally, so if a retro scene takes you to a happy place, this may be the right choice for your home. Toxic Beauty: Keeping Pets Safe in the Garden If you have pets that enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s important to make sure your yard is a safe place for them to be. Consider these hazards that can negatively impact the wellbeing of your furry friends.

Some common plants can be dangerous for animals, causing anything from mild oral irritations and upset stomachs to cardiovascular damage and even death. For example, these are some of the toxic plants the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has identified as harmful for either cats or dogs: Aloe – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia and depression Azalea – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, cardiovascular collapse and death Burning bush – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weakness, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities with large doses Caladium – can cause burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing Daylilies – can cause kidney failure in cats Hibiscus – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and anorexia

The decomposing elements that make compost good can be bad for pets, according to the National Garden Society. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced off area so pets can’t get to it. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice.

The chemicals used to get rid of pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poison, according to the ASPCA. Follow all instructions carefully, and store pesticides and fertilizers in a secure area out of the reach of animals. In addition to using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars and sprays, make sure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms and anemia. Ticks can do all of that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Lyme disease.

Not a Geek? Consider Smart Home 24/7 Tech Support BY SCOTT MCKINLEY It’s been almost two years since the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to shift their physical models and adapt to a remote, virtual environment. A recent survey from Assurant shows that full time work from home activity is expected to increase by 33% as the pandemic continues, tripled from 11% when the pandemic began. This upward trend in work from home culture also comes with an upward trend in smart home device connectivity. From security systems and thermostats to microwaves, coffee makers, and other kitchen appliances, builders and appliance retailers today have already begun to outfit homes with every smart technology device imaginable to create the ultimate connected home experience, and the demand is expected to increase throughout 2022. The new trend in the future of smart homes allows the homeowner to choose the technology and devices they want based on the initial voice prompt system, rather than worrying about the compatibility. The goal of future smart home builders is to make every smart device compatible with each other. Whether it’s sending voice commands through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or another artificial intelligence solution, they need to work with other smart devices, such as lights, thermostats, TVs, and more. Staying connected Wi-fi is ever more important as parents work on computers while the kids are on laptops and tablets, smart televisions and other devices operating in the background. Renters and homeowners alike are opting for smart home appliances, security and other amenities, as the demand for smart home technology increased by nearly 25% at the end of 2021 and is expected to accelerate throughout the next few years. Troubleshooting these devices when they are not working properly can be stressful for busy at-home workers. As the first instinct of many would be trying to fix the problem themselves or going directly to the device manufacturer, there are simple steps one can take while not interrupting workflow at the same time. To ensure smooth connectivity in every corner of the home, start by keeping a close eye on issues shown by the existing wi-fi router, such

52

StPeteLifeMag.com

as web pages loading slowly or video playback constantly buffering. If the router frequently displays issues with the network, the user should consider adding a wi-fi range extender in the home to increase the wireless bandwidth across different rooms. These can be found at most office and computer supply stores. This would be an extreme help for company video meetings and software capabilities when two people in the same household are both working at the same time. Tech support plans For at-home workers, troubleshooting a device can be timeconsuming and hinder work productivity. Whether it’s learning how to set up, connect, or fix a particular device that’s causing problems, live home tech support for all devices is available 24/7 through companies such as Pocket Geek Home (pocketgeekhome.com). Instead of turning to the manufacturer of the device for technical support, these companies provide on-the-spot support for the latest high-tech devices on the market or the TVs, laptops, tablets, speakers, gaming systems, smart watches, Bluetooth headphones that come out annually. Plans entail a monthly fee starting around $25. As anticipated, devices like Ring’s Always Home Cam drone and Amazon’s Astro home robot will be hitting the market this year. Even though smart home devices will make everyday tasks much more convenient to accomplish in the home, homeowners will still get easily frustrated if these devices are not set up properly or not connecting to their home’s network hubs. Providing the right tech support and protection for all of these smart devices in the home is crucial, especially for the work-at-home society that relies heavily on fast and secure wi-fi connections. Homeowners concerned about privacy and vulnerability to hackers or burglars rely on devices like security cameras, to be connected at all times. Even though the work-from-home culture with the pandemic is continuing, it doesn’t mean old tech support ways have to. Scott McKinley is AVP, Premium Technical Support for Pocket Geek Home. How Do I Love Trees? Let Me Count the Ways Going G

reen

BY REBEKAH HEPPNER Pinellas County Master Gardener Volunteer How many trees are there in the City of St. Petersburg? No, this isn’t a trick question or a game like how many marbles in the jar. The St. Petersburg Urban Forestry Committee, a part of the City Beautiful Commission, is undertaking a tree inventory. Why? Trees provide shade which makes us happier during the dog days of summer and keeps our electric bills down. They provide habitat for birds and squirrels. But they also do something called “carbon sequestration,” a very fancy sounding term that means they store CO2, that bad gas that everyone is so worried about these days. There’s a lot of talk about reducing our CO2 emissions, but not much on increasing sequestration. Maybe because “increasing sequestration” is much harder to say three times fast? Bottom line, the more trees we have, the less CO2 in the atmosphere. So, we need trees. We should protect the ones we have. We should plant more. But how will we know 10, 50, 100 years from now if we have more or fewer trees if we don’t know how many we have now? Hence, the need to count them. Of course, we have all kinds of high-tech tools to measure the tree canopy in St. Petersburg and that has been done. The city can use that data to measure the overall increase or decrease over time. But wouldn’t it be nice to know how much of the canopy is long-lived Live Oaks versus relatively shorter-lived Laurel Oaks? And how many pines are left in Pine-ellas, anyway? How many of our trees are invasive non-natives that need to be removed?

56

StPeteLifeMag.com

March/April 2022

There is a cool website at pg-cloud.com/StPeteFL where you can watch the tree inventory grow, but why not log in and get your own trees on the map? Or the trees on your favorite walking path or in your favorite park? In addition to gathering data, the tree inventory teaches about tree species and their value. Once a tree is identified (common name or genus and species) and measured (height and diameter) it can be entered in the appropriate spot on the tree map. Only a small amount of actual tree hugging is required. Then the mapping software not only shows you the Google street view of your tree, it calculates its economic value, breaking it down into stormwater management, property value, energy conservation, air quality and, of course, carbon sequestration. It is a real thing, see? You say you aren’t good at identifying trees? Don’t have a clue what Pi is (needed to determine diameter) and can’t remember the tangent rule from high school trig class (used to measure tree height)? Don’t worry, the Urban Forestry Committee will provide training and tools that will make the identification and measurement easy—maybe even fun. This is a great project for families, neighborhoods, civic clubs and youth groups. You can start by reading the handy Getting Started Guide on the website. If you want to learn more or schedule an inperson training for a small group, contact Cathy Harrelson, Chair, St. Petersburg Urban Forestry Committee (CathyHarrelson@gmail.com or 727-415-8805). Hope to see you hugging a tree soon!

Age is Just a Number to National Senior Games Organizer Andrew Walker wants to live to be 100. Sure, a lot of people dream about celebrating a centenarian birthday and hearing Al Roker extol the day while their photo flashes across the screen on a jar of Smuckers strawberry jam. But children seldom mix in such dreams with youthful athletic aspirations. Walker, a St. Petersburg native, did just that. “I was in fifth grade at St Paul’s Catholic school,” said Walker, rattling off the names of sports legends. “And I wanted to be Bob Hayes, Jim Thorpe and Wilt Chamberlain. And also, one of the oldest people in the world. “I can’t remember why I was drawn to being one of the oldest people in the world, but my grandparents lived with us and I used to see my maternal grandfather (Andrew Polk) go down and work out in this room. I would sneak down and peep in and he would be doing his exercises early in the morning.” Now a youthful-looking 62, Walker does more than reflect on the uncommon fitness drive that allowed his paternal grandfather to become a centenarian. As the director of health and wellness for the Clearwater-based National Senior Games, Walker helps elevate an entire movement that celebrates mixing athletics with aging. In May, thousands of senior athletes will converge on Fort Lauderdale for The Games. They’ll participate in more than 20 sports including track and field, beach volleyball, basketball, pickleball, tennis and triathlons. It may sound like impossible tasks for people in their twilight years, but Walker joins his organization in pushing against those assumptions and encouraging active lifestyles. “Ageism is one of the last isms that we need to deal with, and that’s the stereotyping of seniors,” Walker said, noting that the Seniors Games will include a 105-year-old athlete. “Our athletes

exemplify what is not typical.” Walker has spent a lifetime at the intersection of athletics, fitness and education, drawing from the work of his grandparents and parents. Polk, his grandfather, once served as Dean of Boys at Bethune-Cookman College and went on to be a principal at Gibbs High. His mother, Anna Maria Walker, taught home economics at Gibbs for 35 years, and his father, Mordecai Walker, taught agricultural science and built ag-science programs at several area schools. Andrew also learned about track and field from his father, who competed at Tennessee State University. He blossomed into a nationally-ranked hurdler at Northeast High School in 1977 and went on to the University of Florida where he competed against the world’s best and lettered all four years. He graduated with a degree in health education and exercise science from UF, and also earned a Master’s in public health education from the University of South Florida. Like his father, Andrew built programs – but these focused on wellness and he built them for a municipal health plan serving small towns and counties throughout Georgia. Returning to the bay area and joining the National Senior Games team in 2016 not only allowed him to return home and care for his father, who’s now 97, but it also gave him the chance to re-engage with a community he loves. A self-described “son of the Bay,” he revels over hot weather, ocean vistas, seafood and fresh fruit. He also appreciates the sense of community his return has brought him, and he’s worked to make improvements in his hometown. Walker was part of the Community Remembrance Project, a group that successfully erected a historical marker that publicly acknowledges St. Petersburg’s lynching victims. He embraces revisiting dark vestiges of the past, not to imbue guilt but to promote harmony. “There should be an understanding that I’m not here to harm

SPL PEOPLE you, but I’m a truth teller,” Walker said. “I got involved in the marker project through the inspiration of Bishop Michael Curry, who preached at the Royal wedding (of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle). I read about him doing pilgrimages with another leader in this movement of racial healing. “There’s no reason to feel guilty because you’re not the one who did it.” The group connected an art project to the marker dedication and it resulted in Pinellas County students receiving scholarships. The educator within Walker beams about that achievement, and it’s because he’s constantly teaching. With the seniors, the lessons may involve fitness tips and focusing on preparation instead of arriving at the games hoping to recreate athletic feats of the past. Or he may seek to teach the participants it’s not about “super senior” heroics, but improving health. He shares the story of Vivian Stancil, a teacher from Long Beach, Calif., who turned to the games after diabetes began to threaten her health. “Being legally blind and overweight, she learned how to swim,” Walker said. “She’s been competing in the games now, and she’s not a big-time medal winner, but she gets standing ovations. “So the games are more than just about the elite athletes and the record setters. Our communications person has developed a program called personal best. And instead of doing your personal best in a distance, your personal best is how you live your life as a result of being a senior games athlete.” As you listen to Walker describe various performers, it’s clear he’s drawing fulfillment from watching them succeed and improve their lives. The games include screenings with physical therapists, health tips, dietary advice, a chance for seniors to escape the sense of isolation brought on by the pandemic and, of course, the thrill of victory. His newsletters underscore many of the same aspects. “When you’re at the games and you see these older adults competing and competing well, it’s just an inspiration,” Walker said. “I feel like this was maybe a little bit more than just a guy with a public health background, a wellness background who had competed at the collegiate level, getting a job in his hometown. “It’s vocation and avocation. Really, it’s a calling.” Ernest Hooper is the vice president of communications for United Way Suncoast, and a former Tampa Bay Times columnist. His public affairs program, That’s All I’m Saying, airs on WEDU-PBS.

SPL FASHION

The Dress is Back

A floral dress is definitely the one every girl should own Have fun with fashion! What makes fashion fun though, you may ask. The greatest factor is that fashion is ever changing and evolving, just like our lives, our moods, our needs. One year we adore military styles and natural colors, just to admire explosion, blaze of colors and feminine details the following year. Even if we observe nostalgic design components inspired by previous decades, they are always improved, refreshed, updated and current. I am so excited about this season’s fashion trends. The tendencies are strongly optimistic with brilliant colors, extra fabulous, chic designs you can throw on in a hurry and be stylishly gorgeous and ultra-sassy, since now we have places to go and people to see. The dress is back and it’s here to stay. Dresses in general have gone to the back burner in the last couple of years. Mostly we opted for the comfort of pants and shirts, but the current variety of standout dresses in a multitude of silhouettes will satisfy the most challenging requests. An additional benefit of today’s dress is multifunctionality, don’t you love the fun, easy garment that offers you versatility for day and evening and a variety of occasions?

The key to being shamelessly amazing is to find a dress just perfect for your body type, and enhance the best features you possess. Don’t shy away from cutouts, show your skin, or the parts of your body you love the most. A little peep into your midriff, an open shoulder, higher slit in a long skirt or pants, or design exposing a little of your skin in an unexpected

place will be fresh and exciting. A floral dress is definitely the one every girl should own. It doesn’t matter if it’s a maxi, midi or mini, if you like your body to be hugged by it, or prefer an oversized style, they’re great for work, for laid back graceful looks, for weekends, for events, it’s usually the go-to piece of summer. So now you have the dress, how do you make it more fun than ever? I’m sure you know the answer – accessories and confidence. Don’t be afraid to explore items you haven’t worn before that are new and fun to you. Wear a hat that is large, bold and has its own personality, and own it. Colorful hoop earrings are so much fun, whenever I see someone wearing brightly colored jewelry, I think it is a person with zest for life, outgoing, affectionate personality and curious about the world. Have you ever had a handbag that depicts an item, say a purse that looks like a small guitar, or heart? Why not have an alluring orangeshaped purse, yes, the fruit. How fun it is to pair it with a blue dress? Your state of mind, and the mood of people around you will be instantly lifted, you may even make someone’s day. Of course, those are not the only fun choices for the season, but whatever you wear remember, life is short, have fun with fashion. Ocean Conservation Inspires ‘Fishes Wishes’ Teen Going Green BY MARCIA BIGGS Protecting the ocean is a daily goal for Ryan Moralevitz, a 14-year-old environmentalist devoted to spreading awareness about the plight of our troubled waters. Pollution, trash and plastics, oil spills, it all takes a toll on the fragile ecosystem. Taking action locally, Ryan raises funds for ocean conservation, has authored two books and is finding success as an artist by creating imaginative marine life sculptures from beach refuse and trash. Last fall, Ryan received Honorable Mention at the Florida CraftArt “Environmentally Engaged” exhibit that included works from established artists. His fish sculpture entitled “Angling for a Cleaner Ocean” was composed of beach trash and other waste he collected. A 10th grader who virtually attends New Gate Montessori School in Sarasota, Ryan is bubbling with enthusiasm on a recent phone interview, and seems wise beyond his years. His recently released self-published book “InspirOcean” is filled with lessons for all ages, even including interviews with respected ocean conservation leaders such as Dr. Sylvia Earle, Guy Harvey, Robert Weiland and Philippe Cousteau. It’s a follow-up to his first release, “Puffy the Pufferfish Saves the Ocean,” which he wrote at the age of 6.

Ryan created The Fishes Wishes (thefisheswishes.com) to help promote ocean awareness and raise funding for ocean conservation. It all started when he was a tyke. “When I was about 4 years old, my parents would take me to the beach and I started noticing trash. So I started bringing a bag with me and collecting trash when I would see it,” he explains. “One day, when I saw some teenagers roll a tire into the ocean, I decided that I really wanted to help and I let my parents know. They helped me to start The Fishes Wishes.” Ryan and his parents started making ocean-theme magnets and ornaments out of driftwood to sell at local craft fairs, with profits donated to Ocean Conservancy. He’s now moved on to making suncatchers and keychains out of recycled glass and natural materials. These, along with his books, a selection of hats, t-shirts and plushies, are sold on his web site. Ryan always seems to have something on his calendar — he helps organize and attends beach cleanups, mangrove and sea oat plantings. He attends festivals and craft fairs where he can sell his merch. And wherever he goes, he continues to spread the gospel of a clean and healthy ocean.

Left, Ryan’s trash sculpture, Angling for a Cleaner Ocean, received Honorable Mention at a Florida CraftArt environmental exhibit. Right, his new book is filled with inspiring interviews from nationally renowned ocean conservationists.

People To Watch

Eco-Fashionista / Joey Pouch Leggings BY MARCIA BIGGS

With an active lifestyle, Melody Mendoza-Auslander saw a need and decided to find a solution. The idea sprouted in early 2020 when the avid yoga practitioner realized that running errands in yoga pants (common practice for many women) posed a problem: fumbling around in a shoulder bag, backpack or fanny pack simply was not functional. “I need a hands-free way to carry my money, my mask, and my keys,” said the St. Pete resident, who moved here from California three years ago. So her fashion sense kicked in and she hatched a plan to design and manufacture her own line of leggings with a built-in zipper compartment. But Mendoza-Auslander wanted to go one step further — she wanted the fabric to be eco-friendly and sustainable. After nearly a year of research and with the help of a number of supportive businesswomen, MendozaAuslander launched her company, LaBetri, and introduced her patent-pending Joey Pouch Legging in May 2021. The high-quality leggings feature a built-in retractable zipper compartment that can be tucked inside the front of the high waistband. The lightweight yet durable antimicrobial fabric is certified by OEKA-TEX to ensure sustainability. When it’s time to recycle, Joey Pouch Leggings will decompose in a landfill within five years thanks to a special compound added to the nylon fabric. “It’s important to care about the environment,” said Mendoza-Auslander. “Nylon is the worst fabric because it never disintegrates. A company I found in Brazil uses a new technology that infuses a compound into the nylon to help it disintegrate after it’s discarded.” Joey Pouch Leggings are ideal for those with an active lifestyle from running and yoga to walking the dog, grocery shopping, and traveling. They are manufactured in the USA, and offer high performance quality. Last December, Mendoza-Auslander made her debut at the St. Pete Pitch Night for entrepreneurs and start-ups, and although she didn’t win the $5,000 grand prize, the publicity helped propel and inspire her. On the drawing board is more eco-friendly activewear, she says, and a dream to expand the Joey Pouch Leggings globally. Joey Pouch Leggings ($109) can be ordered at labetri.com or at Sip Shop Hooray, 2053 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg.

SPL HEALTH

Understanding Grief and Coping with Loss • Loss- Examining what that relationship meant to you. • Grief- Exploring the emotions associated with that loss. • Letting go- Not letting go of the person, but letting go of the pain.

If anyone would have ever said to me that one day I was going to be a therapist, I would’ve replied, “No way.” My passion was always for fashion, and after graduating from college, I was immediately hired as an assistant buyer for Robinsons. I was traveling to New York, teaching at a fashion college, and working my way to a lead buyer when suddenly my world changed. Shortly after graduation, I lost my mom at age 39 to a brain tumor. Thirteen months later, my dad committed suicide. My life as I knew it no longer existed. I have seen my share of grief in 30+ years of counseling. If you envision your life as a puzzle, with all the pieces as facets of your life, and suddenly, one day that puzzle shatters. You’re left to put the puzzle back together again, yet, you notice one key piece missing. That feeling portrays grief, and grief is often a reflection of the love that you felt for the person who’s now gone. Most people experience some type of loss: a death, the ending of a relationship, or the loss of a pet. The grief over those losses depends on the type of loss, the intensity of the relationship, and the events surrounding that loss. Grief is a natural response to loss and is unique to each individual and often makes us vulnerable. The real challenge begins when we attempt to reconnect with a world that is moving forward without the person we lost. Grief is not about the pain that we feel, it’s about the love that we felt. Not everyone experiences the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Grief is not a linear process. From my experience, I assist my clients in navigating through three distinct phases of grief:

Often my clients ask, “ How long will I need to grieve?” but no timetable exists. Many elect to keep busy and use distractors to avoid grief, yet that is only effective for short term. Avoid using distractors as it will only prolong the grieving process. In order to heal, you need to feel. Growth eventually comes from pain. So what are some ways to cope with grief and put the pieces of your puzzle back together? • Talk to friends and family • Give yourself permission to feel • Don’t isolate yourself • Tap into your faith • Celebrate the memory of your loved one • Find meaning in your loss • Seek professional help Coping with loss is often the most difficult challenge we face but loss can also be a transformation for change. It changed me. My losses set me on a new career path as a therapist now assisting my clients in coping and rebuilding. If you are struggling with loss, contact McNulty Counseling and Wellness. DINING OUT

Winemakers Break From Tradition to Create the Extraordinary BY WILL HOWARD A winemaker has an interesting job because it requires a diverse array of skills, ranging from enology, biology, and chemistry to art, economics, and marketing. The process of making wine is steeped in tradition, with the history crossing countless regions across the globe and edging towards the best practices for thousands of years. Over time, some winemakers have taken risks to break from tradition, or risks to revert back to traditional techniques over modern advancements, in the pursuit of creating a better wine. These are some of the winemakers that broke the mold by advancing winemaking in a completely different way. Veuve Clicquot Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, Veuve (French for widow) Clicquot, advanced champagne production and distribution around the world after her husband, François Clicquot, died in 1805. Madame Clicquot is credited with creating the process of riddling champagne bottles before disgorgement. Riddling is the process of resting champagne bottles at an angle towards the top of the bottle to gently collect dead yeast after secondary fermentation creates the bubbles. With the yeast settled at the top, the dead yeast could be removed through disgorgement. This resulted in better bubbles, clean wine, dry wine, and much more efficient production to meet the global demand. Le Grande Dame Barbe-Nicole is a legend and the process of riddling is still used by champagne producers to this day. The signature wine, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label, is a benchmark for bubbles.

“The world is in perpetual motion, and we must invent the things of tomorrow. One must go before others, be determined and exacting, and let your intelligence direct your life. Act with audacity.” ~ Madame Clicquot OO OO (Double Zero) owner Chris Hermann and winemaker Pierre Millemann are perhaps the most extreme advocates of a once discarded winemaking technique of embracing oxidation of white wine during fermentation. This is referred to as Black Chard. In the modern era of winemaking, oxygen is the enemy. Oxygen is typically removed during fermentation through the use of pneumatic presses and by pumping in nitrogen gas to replace oxygen. If oxygen is able to saturate the wine, then a white wine could accidentally turn brown during fermentation and create the ideal environment for bacteria to grow. You might be familiar with this horrifying occurrence from the movie “Bottle Shock,” in which a California wine, a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, turned brown in the bottle before going to be judged against the best chardonnay of Burgundy at the “Judgement in Paris.” That wine settled, clarified, and went on to be the winner of the tasting and the best white wine in the world at the time. Although it worked out for Chateau Montelena, oxygen was seen as the enemy because there is a huge risk of destroying the entire bottling in order to make the wine resistant to oxidation in the future. The Oregon producer, OO, goes a step beyond brown to get the darkest Black Chard possible by hyper-oxidizing their

DINING OUT chardonnay fermentation. With a careful eye, Pierre Millemann is able to create some of the most astounding chardonnay in America. VGW and EGW are fitting names for two of their wines (an abbreviation for very good white and extra good white). OO VGW is a precise and crisp chardonnay that immerses you in minerality. The wine opens with crushed stone, underlying acidity, and grapefruit. 00 EGW has the minerality playing a supporting role, but additionally offers richness, silky texture, and evolving flavors of peach, apricot, and papaya. Roberto Voerzio Perhaps the most spectacular example of winemakers breaking from tradition is that of the Piemonte rebels known as the Barolo Boys. Roberto Voerzio started his winery in the commune of La Morra in 1986. Voerzio’s modernist techniques of green harvesting, fermenting in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast, and aging the wines in barrique (smaller than traditional wooden barrels), earned his 1997 Brunate Barolo the first-ever double 100-point wine score in Piedmont.

Voerzio’s green harvesting method supposedly caused many of his vineyard workers to quit because it seemed so wrong at the time. Green harvesting simply means to reduce the number of grape bunches on a vine by removing them early. The average grape vine for making wine has about 50 bunches of grapes. Voerzio’s vines have about 5-8 bunches. And to further concentrate the focus of the vine, those remaining bunches are trimmed from a large V-shape to a much smaller sphere. The traditionalists saw this technique as wasteful and unnecessary, but today Roberto Voerzio is a living legend of Barolo. Roberto Voerzio Barbera d’Alba ‘Il Cerreto’ is an approachable and more accessible wine if you’d like to see what all the hype is about. Il Cerreto has flavors of raspberry, cherry, cigar box, leather, and orange with level tannin throughout and pronounced acidity. For a first-class representation of Roberto Voerzio wines, try the La Serra Barolo. La Serra has a unique rich and chewy texture, dried flowers, cherry, plum, blood orange, licorice, and an extremely long finish. Open the La Serra Barolo a few hours before tasting. Acclaimed Ford Bronco Gallops Back to Dealerships 2022 Bronco (Black Diamond) Tires: P265/70R17 Wheelbase: 116.1 inches Length: 190.5 inches Width: 76.3 inches Height: 73.9 inches Weight: 4,995 pounds Tow capacity: 8,840 pounds Fuel capacity: 20.8 gallons City: 18 mpg Highway: 20 mpg Base price: $39,340 Price as tested: $48,325 Web site: www.ford.com

BY NITISH S. RELE In case you haven’t noticed, the Ford Bronco has come back to the rodeo! And what a revival after over 25 years out to pasture. Kudos to Ford engineers for bringing stiff rivalry to the game in response to its chief contender, the immensely popular and iconic Jeep Wrangler. The Bronco version (Advanced 4X4) Ford gave us comes with rough-and-ready looks and off-road prowess. And it has plenty of muscle with its 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. It pumps out 315 horsepower @ 5500 rpm and 410 pounds-feet of torque @ 3250 rpm. EcoBoost is essentially twin turbochargers and a smalldisplacement engine working in tandem with gas-direct injection to produce a powerful but fuel-efficient engine. It’s mated to the standard 10-speed auto gear box. An independent front end with tuned struts and stabilizer bar, and five-link solid axle rear suspension isolates occupants from road noise and imperfections to ensure a safe jaunt. Providing superb on-center feel to the driver is an electric power system. G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) modes are normal, eco, sport, slippery, sand, mud/ruts and rock crawl. Up front, rounded LED headlights flank the signature cartridge black grille with BRONCO etched in white letters. Heavy-duty modular bumper, metal bash plates, front tow hooks, active grille shutters and mainly short front and rear overhangs convey off-road prowess of a vehicle that can wade through 33.5 inches of water.

The cabin, though comfy, offers features such as rubberized flooring (and cargo area too) and zipper pockets (with Molle straps) for extra gear that proves it’s safe to venture into nomad land. Other goodies include leather/wrapped tilt/telescopic steering column/shifter, 60/40 split fold rear seat, manual single a/c, six-way manual front seats, second-row under seat storage bin; and an 8-inch instrument panel, Sync3, which accesses audio, telephone, navigation controls via a voice command. The standard Ford CoPilot360 bundles together driver-assist safety features such as blind spot monitor, cross-traffic alert, pre-collision and lane-keep aid with auto emergency brake, auto high beams, and rearview camera. Also included are dual front and side airbags, front knee, side curtain airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes with electronic stability and traction control, front 180-degree camera, trail control (essentially cruise control while off-roading), tire pressure monitor, and daytime running lights. The Bronco’s gallop back into the wilderness, this time with the Advanced 4X4, is a tremendous and much-needed addition to the already-impressive Ford lineup. If you like to go off the beaten path or customize your vehicle (as in Jeep), the exciting and cool Bronco offers endless choices. It’s a job well done. Take a bow, Ford! Nitish S.
