WELCOME TO SPL The holiday season is always such a special one for those of us who live, work and play in the ‘Burg. This year we have much to look forward to -- traditional favorites like the annual Candlelight Home Tour in Old Northeast and many holiday events and performances at the Mahaffey Theater, Palladium, and along our waterfront parks. Our favorite New Year’s Eve bash, First Night, returns to some 10 venues around downtown, offering up lots of family fun, live music, street performers, choirs and, of course, fireworks twice that evening over the Bay. We have compiled a special feature just for Holiday Events around St. Pete so you can plan the coming months. What a wonderful life, indeed! A couple features are near and dear to our hearts at SPL – they look at local residents who make a difference by volunteering. Meet Jennifer Lockwood, the guiding light at Sol Relief, Inc, a nonprofit organization that provides disaster relief through the help of local pilots donating their planes and time, and hundreds of volunteers, businesses, organizations and groups around Tampa Bay. Learn about recent relief efforts from St. Pete to the devastated islands of the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. It’s an amazing story and one that will restore your faith in the goodness of humanity. We also give a high five to the hundreds of folks who make up the Second Time Arounders Marching Band. This entertaining bunch of hometown funsters is heading to New York City to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Read Kayla Gleason’s story and be sure to tune in to watch! Finally, as the year closes, we want to thank our advertisers for helping St. Pete Life become the success we had hoped for. We appreciate each and every business that has chosen us to deliver their message, and we appreciate each and every compliment from our loyal readers. Our mission to provide this magazine to 20,000 targeted households in St. Pete can only continue through the support of our advertisers. Please consider joining us in the coming year to promote your product or service to our discriminating readers.

Here They Go Again!

Second Time Arounders head to Macy’s Parade PHOTOS/ SECOND TIME AROUNDERS

Second Time Arounders performed at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washinton DC. BY KAYLA GLEASON Marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a once-in-alifetime opportunity for select bands across the country but, this year, the Second Time Arounders Marching Band gets to experience it all over again.

He estimates the average age of the band is around 50 years old but anywhere between 19-year-olds fresh out of high school up to experienced marchers in their late 70’s. “Age makes no difference, if you can march and step, come join us,” he said.

Their name actually has nothing to do with their second Macy’s parade appearance, but rather, is a reference to the members’ ages. “I started the band 38 years ago,” said director and co- Bill Findeison. “Every year, there was a major festival here called the Festival of States. For a week, the town would be packed with band kids and I asked myself, ‘what happens to them after high school or college?’

And many listened to that call to action.

“Once you graduate, marching band stops but people still want to play their instruments. So, I figured, let’s just start an adult marching band and see what happens.”

Some members have been playing instruments for as long as they can remember, like Lora Sadler and Paula Crandall, who began learning music in fourth and fifth grade, respectively. “I really just wanted to march again but, getting to do the Macy’s Parade, that’s a trip of a lifetime, it was a major bucket list item of mine in high school,” Sadler said.

Some 75 people showed up for the first meeting – a number that has now grown to over 800, including players, twirlers and dancers (known as the Rounderettes). “Everyone was thrilled with it, so we just kept doing it and here we are,” said Findeison.

Stephanie Lafleur, who plays bass drum and is also fundraising chairperson, has been a member since 2009. “I like the social aspect – music really has a way of bringing people together. I learned of the band by watching them in the Macy’s Parade and I joined the next year,” she said. “Once a band geek always a band geek.”

Crandall added: “It’s a great family activity, too. There are lots of couples, siblings, parents and children. I have four other family members in this.”

SPL LIVING From Near and Far And the band isn’t just reserved for locals either. Many travel from all over the state, even the country, to practice and perform with the group. “I travel from Atlanta with my wife for this,” said drum major Lee Butts. “The chance to do all this again as adults is incredible. We’ve played everywhere from Canada to Savannah, D.C. to Seattle but the Macy’s Parade is the ultimate performance. There’s nothing bigger or better.”

are divided into sections – like percussion and brass – where they learn specific choreography and prepare for the parade’s two-anda-quarter-mile walk.

Despite the season only being two and a half months long, according to Findeison, the members train hard during that time, especially with this year’s televised performance coming up. The New York City Macy’s Committee makes their performer decisions over a year in advance, so bands have a little extra time to prepare.

“Being in the staging area with all the celebrities, floats and gigantic balloons is incredible. It makes all of the hard work and preparation worth it and it is truly an honor to be invited and to represent our city,” said Brown.

“Both times the Macy’s Committee has come to personally invite us, the first time during our 25th Anniversary Party and this last time during our Festival of Bands performance at Williams Park. Then, the planning begins with 18 months of preparation to decide on the uniform, music and drill,” said Angie Brown, the official Speaker of the Band. “Our creative staff – Bill Findeison, Roger Green, Mike Wetzel, Jennis Thomas and Cathy Kersten – are awesome at what they do, with the goal being to entertain.” The band itself has six practices before they leave for New York, fine-tuning their performance for hours on end – sometimes before even picking up an instrument. Under Findeison’s guidance, players

But rehearsal doesn’t stop when they get to New York. The Wednesday before the parade, everyone practices at a spot in New Jersey. Then, Thanksgiving Day, a dress rehearsal is held at 3 a.m. before the parade begins at 7 a.m.

And it isn’t just the musicians putting in all these hours of work. The Second Time Arounders have a range of auxiliary groups to add visual interest, including rifles and dancers. “We help enhance the performance while the musicians play,” said Cathy Scavelli, co-lead of the Rounderettes. “Rounderettes have been a part of the band for 30 years, we march at the very front of the parade. Macy’s was a great experience the first time and, to be able to do it again, it’s just amazing.” Funding the Band While most members pay their own way to NYC, the band also does a fair amount of fundraising to help offset some of the costs, like chili cookoffs and the recent Oktoberfest. “We raise money for PHOTOS/KAYLA GLEASON

In recent years, they’ve performed at the St. Petersburg Christmas Parade, the Ybor City St. Patrick’s Day Parade and at Walt Disney World. They are also an exhibition band at the Florida Marching Band Regional Championships at Riverview High School this November.

Anyone 18 years or older is welcome to join the band and, even if you don’t have instrument experience, you can always audition for the Rounderettes or one of the many auxiliary groups. “We have so much fun, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played in years, dust off that horn, get your embouchure in shape and join us in the spring,” said Brown. “Your tribe is waiting!” The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be televised on Thursday, Nov. 28, from 9 am to noon on NBC. www.secondtimearounders.org

It’s been six years since PureLife Medi-Spa opened its doors on Indian Rocks Road in Largo. The medical spa, owned by Medical Director, Dr. G. The event featured entertainment, exquisite foods catered by Bonefish Grill, as well as specials and prizes for their guests. Tampa-based charity, Wheels of Success, was also on hand to give a vehicle to a domestic violence survivor in need, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Fitzgeralds recently donated a car to the charity, which was sold and used to purchase two vehicles for the program. The recipients of the 2002 Lexus RX are a mother and her two daughters currently transitioning from a shelter in St. Petersburg to an apartment. “We couldn’t be more grateful to our loyal patients and supporters,” said Dr. Fitzgerald. “Every year we continue to grow our practice and the annual anniversary party is a chance to bring people together to remember our humble beginnings and to recognize how far we’ve come. I couldn’t be more proud of our staff and all of their hard work and dedication to providing first-class service to our patients. This year is particularly special because we had the opportunity to help a family in need with a car that will help them get back on their feet. We believe wholeheartedly in giving back to those who can use a hand. The car reveal was truly a beautiful moment!” The medical spa, consistently recognized for excellence, has

DINING OUT Sundial St. Pete 199 2nd Ave. N, St. Petersburg (727) 523-6297

FarmTable Cucina PHOTOS/FARMTABLE CUCINA

BY MARCIA BIGGS Look for the giant sundial and the life-size brass dolphins frolicking and you have discovered the heartbeat of downtown St. Pete at Sundial. The attractive entertainment, shopping and dining complex is anchored by Locale Market, a popular locals go-to for curated artisanal foods from meats and cheeses to coffee and pastries, handmade dishes and imported products, fresh produce and an excellent selection of beer and wine. It’s a great place to grab a quick bite or takeout to sit in the plaza out front and watch the world go by. For those looking for an exceptional dining experience, or just a great hangout for happy hour, head up to the second floor and FarmTable Cucina. Locale and FarmTable are one operation under the auspices of founders and chefs Michael Mina and Don Pintabona. The casual ambiance takes inspiration from an Italian farmhouse, with plank floorboards and tables and an open floor plan that invites conversation around a bar in the center of the room. Choose from seating indoors or on the patio that overlooks the plaza. During the holiday season, it’s delightful to sit beside the festive lighted Sundial Christmas tree (starting November 23 this year). Carefully curated menus for lunch and dinner offer farm-and-Gulf-to-table fare that combines highquality mostly natural and organic ingredients, all fresh and locally-sourced when possible. We appreciate the sustainable carryout packaging, too (don’t think we don’t notice). Chef James Kirby now has a year under his belt and is hitting his stride with creative dishes inspired by the various regions and history of Italy. He told us he is presenting new pasta dishes monthly – many with recipes that go back generations – after painstakingly researching the foods of each region in Italy. This night he proudly brought us one of his hand-made specialty pastas, busiate, a traditional Sicilian pasta served with pesto and lots of flavorful garlic.

Top photo, from top left, Fried Rainbow Cauliflower, Chicken Cacciatore, Spinach and Ricotta Cavatelli, and Gulf Tilefish. The rustic farm table in the dining room welcomes groups.

Kirby is diligent about sourcing from local/Florida farms, fishermen and farmers (kudos for serving greens from our local family-run Brick Street Farms). Selections are fairly well distributed between steaks, seafood and pasta – so something for everyone. From the wood-fired grill come healthy renditions of prime skirt steak, rib

weekend brunch menu based more on appetizers, salads, sandwiches and a few brunchy items like a melt-in- yourmouth lemon ricotta pancake souffle. For nibblers, the salami and cheese board might be just right ($15/$25).

Ah, but it’s the pastas we adore. Each is lovingly made by hand and go far beyond the mundane. Game lovers will want to try the locally-sourced wild boar Bolognese served in a hearty ragu with whole wheat pappardelle. Squid ink tagliatelle is another winner, featuring spicy Key West pink shrimp and fennel sofrito. Forget the diet with the spinach and ricotta cavatelli in pecorino cream with bits of country ham. For winter, look for porcini and robiola filled pasta with parmesan and mushroom crema.

A special pizza menu ($17-$21) is available from 5 pm to close daily and makes a great early dinner or aftertheater snack with a glass of wine or beer at the bar. Pick from 10 handcrafted pies (the crust is perfectly golden and bubbly), from your traditional Margherita to the Sicilian (ricotta, pecorino, anchovy, tomato, squash blossom, and white sauce) to the Norma Jean (fried eggplant slices, shaved parm, basil, arugula). We loved the garlicy Fun Guy covered in chanterelle mushrooms, fontina, salsa verde and white sauce.

FarmTable loves families and groups to gather around its main farm table. They offer a Taste of Cucina for $59 per person served family style featuring starters and appetizers, pasta, entrée and dessert (must fill the entire table, bring your neighbors). There is also a

Join an exclusive 10-seat Chef’s Table tasting dinner in the intimate private dining room on Friday and Saturday evenings at 6:30 pm.; $105 per person; gratuity, tax and drinks extra. Book online at farmtablecucina.com/events Wine tastings featuring various regions of Italy are held often, accompanied by an assortment of cheese and charcuterie. Check the Facebook page for event updates.

It’s worth mentioning that this is not a restaurant for a cheap date. Dinner prices are high-end, and side dishes are extra, but a visit to FarmTable Cucina is certainly a must for anyone who loves traditional Italian cuisine.

Holiday Food Bites Who doesn’t love an Italian pastry from Mazzaro’s? Dive intro miniature cannolis, eclairs, cream puffs and sfogliatelle. Your guests will love you forever. Trays run $30-$45; Mazzaro Italian Market is at 2909 22nd Avenue N., St. Petersburg. Closed Sundays.

Create a festive fall charcuterie board for your Thanksgiving dinner by choosing from a selection of gourmet cheeses, meats, olives, dried fruits and nuts. Start with some checked napkins or placemats and add fall leaves from a craft store. This creative board featuring Windsor Red Cheddar, Braseola, Aged Havarti, Proscuitto, Manchego, Hot Coppa, and Cahill’s Porter Cheddar was pulled together by Locale Market. Celebrate The Holidays

BY WILL HOWARD The season of family, friends, and celebration is here. All around the world people celebrate the end of the season’s harvest with holidays like Thanksgiving. With wine, perhaps the largest festival is Beaujolais Nouveau Day which is celebrated in France on the third Thursday of November to mark the completion of the harvest and the release of Beaujolais Nouveau at precisely 12:01 am that day. Beaujolais is the southernmost appellation of Burgundy. Unlike Pinot Noir in the Côte d’Or of Northern Burgundy, Gamay is the red grape of Beaujolais in Southern Burgundy. Nouveau means “new” in French. And Beaujolais Nouveau is the newest wine of the year’s vintage, going from vine to bottle in only a matter of weeks. To me the wine represents celebration, the Fall season, and taking the moment to appreciate what we have without the wait. Beaujolais Nouveau is youthful, fresh, fruity, slightly sweet, and has a light tingle of effervescence. This wine is not for wine snobbery. In fact, most oenophiles turn their noses up to Beaujolais Nouveau. Here are some reasons not to do that: Honesty - The wine is only weeks old and is from the largest wine producing region in Burgundy; that is all summed up in the name. Beaujolais Nouveau is not trying to be something it’s not. Price - The wine is a suitable and affordable option for entertaining friends and family during the holidays. A bottle or six won’t set you back too much. Uniqueness - The wine is red, but best served with a chill. The wine is still, but tingles the tongue like sparkling wine. The wine is French, but sweet and fruity. This wine is certainly different. In the Spirit - This shouldn’t be the wine you drink every week of the year, it isn’t the wine to commemorate reaching a milestone in life, and it just isn’t a wine to be cherished or doted upon. But if you have candy on Halloween, turkey and sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving, and you stay up till the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, then you know

26

StPeteLifeMag.com

November/December 2019

what it means to be in the spirit. It’s ok to be in the spirit and enjoy Beaujolais Nouveau with friends and family this time of year. Here are my recommendations for Beaujolais Nouveau and other wines to entertain and celebrate with this holiday season: 2019 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau - I have not tasted this vintage, since it is still grape juice as I write this article, but Georges Duboeuf is the producer I am recommending. In 2017, St. Petersburg artist Ari Azzopardi won the first annual Nouveau Artist Label Competition with the painting “Candy Coated.” The winning label is selected based on votes from social media and art professionals. In the third year of the competition Dallas artist Laura Runge submitted the winning painting. Check out Runge’s “Joyous Crush” on labels this November. 2016 Domaine Eden, Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains - This wine represents exactly what Pinot Noir should be while still being affordable and accessible. The wine comes from the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The wine is a blend of several pinot noir clones and is an elegant balance of alcohol, acidity, and oak. The wine brings to mind red cherries, clean forest air, and baking spice. 2015 Domaine Specht, Riesling Grand Cru Mandelberg, Alsace, France - It’s important to offer alternative white options to Chardonnay when entertaining. This is a wine that will set you apart from the standard Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio out there. This is a dry Riesling from Alsace. The wine bursts with aromas of dried fruit and citrus with minerality and petrol wafting through the glass. 2017 Buglioni Il Vigliacco Spumante Brut Rosé, Veneto, Italy The holidays need bubbles and this is a great bottle. The wine is made from 100% Molinara from Veneto. The bubbles are creamy throughout the palate, followed by notes of strawberry, with a savory finish. FOOD BITES The 2019 Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show at the Orange County Convention Center in September was abuzz with new products, food tastings and innovative ideas from some 400 vendors. We loved the Best in Show Winner, the Edible Cookie Cup, from Noi Caffe – filled with your choice of cappuccino, latte or hot cocoa. Talk about no waste, you simply sip, then eat the Italian biscotti cup! A box of 36 costs $71.64, a bit pricy but just think how impressed your guests will be (big hint for gourmet coffee bars). Go to noicaffe.net/edible-cookie-cup. The Healthy Food Expo Florida offered up green, sustainable and organic products and trends. We loved seeing the many vendors selling compostable, plant-based and bamboo cutlery and dinnerware, in particular the many paper straw vendors. These vendor prove it is getting easier for local restaurants and businesses to join in the ocean-friendly

practice of moving away from single-use plastics.

Volunteers gather in a hangar at St. Pete Air for instructions on loading supplies bound for the Bahamas. Right, (from left) April Gillmore (SOL Relief), Dr. Jo Ann Daniels (Central Pasco Veterinary Care), and Jennifer Lockwood (SOL Relief) worked on getting veterinary supplies to the islands. BY MARCIA BIGGS In September and October of 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused massive devastation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and many other areas of the Caribbean. A former St. Croix, U.S.V.I. resident and pilot, Jennifer Lockwood, wanted to help. Jennifer partnered with St. Pete Air and the Glasscock Family Foundation to create an innovative disaster relief mission utilizing small aircraft to serve U.S.V.I and Puerto Rico with immediate aid. From that mission a new venture focused on providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief with the use of aviation was formed – Sol Relief, Inc. On September 1, Sol Relief, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, launched a relief effort to support the Bahamas in recovering from a direct hit by Hurricane Dorian. The Category 5 hurricane pounded the islands of the Bahamas for 40 hours, leaving total ruin and devastation, flooding, no electricity or clean water, people trapped in their houses and entire families missing. At least 70,000 people were left homeless.

November/December 2019

Since then Sol Relief has flown over 80 flights, received over $1,000,000 in donations and collected over 400,000 pounds in supply donations. The immediate relief phase of this mission is over, but Sol Relief is still hard at work helping Bahamians with rebuilding their communities. Leading the day-to-day logistics and the face of Sol Relief is St. Pete resident Jennifer Lockwood. Lockwood has been a tour-deforce during the Bahamas relief effort, working on logistics and flight plans, and with partners, volunteer pilots and hundreds of St. Pete residents, businesses, churches and organizations who have donated funding, supplies and time. We sat down with Lockwood in her office at St. Pete Air recently. She is quick to point out that it’s the support and compassion of the local community that has been the driving force behind her work at Sol Relief.

CONVERSATIONS It’s been almost two months now since the Bahamas relief effort began. What was it like at first? We started by transporting certified search and rescue teams, mechanics and boat captains. We also sent over three Sol Relief volunteers to handle logistics. There was no organization, nobody in charge, it was chaos. Roads were blocked, there was no way to get to the airport. We repaired trucks to help clear the road to the ferry dock, fixed the ferry, and repaired the dock. There was no clean water so that was a top priority. We would fly into three small airports, and take supplies by boats to smaller keys. One of the residents let us use their home as a distribution center, even though it was filled with sand and mangroves, that was very important. So our first flights we delivered bottled water and water filtration kits that can be used to turn salt water into clean drinking water. We transported workers for one of our partner organizations, World Hope International, to set up clean water stations throughout the islands. We brought in medical supplies, doctors, food, chain saws, generators and basic survival gear like cots, air mattresses, tents, tarps, and solar panels. Those flights continued for several weeks. Talk about the big Sol Relief supply drive in early September. We had nearly 200 volunteers show up and work in the supply drive center which was in a hangar at St. Pete Air. We had no idea it would get so big … people just showed up and took over. Kahwa brought coffee every morning, restaurants dropped off lunches. It was amazing. After a week we had more than we could handle, 350 pallets of supplies, so we had to end it. So many church groups, schools and organizations were doing their own drives. Even the Tampa Bay Rays held a major supply drive over one weekend. We had so much

we had to ship it to Freeport … eight containers and volunteers to unload the boat and distribute. Any local superstars you would like to acknowledge? There are just so many, but John Auer donated a match of a half million dollars, he’s a retired insurance executive and a plane owner. He probably flew 30 or more flights, he has been incredible, a catalyst for the program. St. Pete Air, of course, donated the hangar for the supply drive and Tampa Bay Air Charter managed customs paperwork and helped with loading and management. Travis Parker, a member of the band the Inhalers, came to me and said he wanted to put on a Bahamas Relief Concert. He organized the entire concert and did an amazing amount of work, with seven locals bands, Jannus Live donated the venue. We made $35,140 in donations, and Dr. John Strong and his group at Bankers Financial matched it. What is happening now with Sol Relief? We still get flight requests on almost a daily basis, so we need to vet those and prioritize. Now we are into the long-term recovery phase, researching home-rebuilding. We are starting with 10 homes and looking for partners here to work in rebuilding. We have a pool of 200 volunteers and many are skilled laborers, so we want to put together a program that will fly in skilled laborers. Our supply drive is over but we are still seeking financial donations since it will be expensive to rebuild.

Pilot John Auer has been devoted to the rescue efforts. He What have you learned about the has flown dozens of supply flights to the Bahamas. people in St. Pete from all this? Volunteers are still needed on an occasional basis. We are amazingly resourceful and To keep updated on Sol Relief, go to their Facebook compassionate … it’s incredible page at www.facebook.com/solrelief/ how many big hearts have shown up and given their time and worked For contact information and how to donate, really hard. I thank the community go to www.solrelief.org for the success of Sol Relief because it was a community effort … over To sign up to volunteer, go to solrelief.org/get-in200 volunteers and local businesses volved/ (Note that Bahamas rebuild efforts will giving their time or resources. Ask The

Concierge Isaiah Joseph

Concierges (navigators, hosts) are relied upon for their knowledge on all things fun, unique and worthwhile in their location. It’s their job to keep up on the latest events, new restaurants and bars, and even quirky things to do. Who better to ask for advice about ‘the Burg? This issue we talk to Isaiah Joseph, Chief Concierge and Event Coordinator at ONE St. Petersburg in the heart of downtown. He has been assisting nearly 500 residents since it opened in late 2018, compiling a weekly newsletter with local events and things to do. At just 21, Joseph may well be one of the youngest concierges in town. “What attracted me to St. Petersburg is the city’s growth and how accommodating it is for someone as young as I am to thrive in its environment,” he says. What are your top requests from residents new to the area? My residents mainly want to have a true “Florida experience” so I’ll send them on a private day trip to Egmont key by boat, this way they can see the scenery of being on the water and experience unique snorkeling that Egmont has to offer. Give us your recommendations for: Favorite Restaurant – Casual: BUYA Ramen. This spot is excellent for a great bowl of ramen, but I suggest going for their lunch special which includes a little bit of everything for $13. Also Pizza Box is so small you wouldn’t think much of it, until you’ve

32

tried their organic homemade French oven pizza. Money Not an Object: The restaurant that has surprised me the most would have to be FarmTable Cucina with the diverse menu options and the madein-house pasta, you can’t go wrong. If you’re looking to have a taste of everything, try their “Taste of Cucina.” Best Hangout Spot: This one becomes difficult because there are so many amazing spots to hang out in the ‘Burg, but in my opinion, it would have to be Park and Rec with all of the original arcade games and the air hockey tables there is plenty to do to keep you occupied for a whole night out. Best Place to Go With Your Dog: Other than all the amazing parks we have, it would have to be the Dog Bar. Best Cheap Date: $5 movie night on Tuesdays at AMC Sundial. Best Night on the Town: Start the night at Crafty Squirrel for the 2 for 1 drink specials until 7 pm, then head over to Hideaway Cafe to enjoy live music and great people. How to experience the real St. Pete: The best way to experience St. Pete is to be involved in the community even if it’s just volunteering a few hours at one of the museums or even the library. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and help support the great city we live in.

SPL LIVING BY MARCIA BIGGS ST. PETERSBURG - Beverly Yepes loves the holidays. She also loves Christmas trees. As a world traveler and collector of memories and beautiful things, Yepes speaks with reverence about her beloved ornament collection and the meticulous routine she begins early each October to bring to life some 15 beautiful Christmas trees and wreaths throughout the 8,200-square-foot penthouse condo she shares with husband, Carlos Yepes, in downtown St. Petersburg. As a child with an artistic mother and military father, she grew up all over the world, “so our Christmas trees have changed depending on where we lived,” she says. She cherishes family heirloom ornaments from her mother and grandmother, vintage blown glass, nutcrackers and old-fashioned decorated eggshells. She incorporates them with her collections of Lenox and Swarovski crystal, and other ornaments made, gifted and purchased throughout the years. She and Carlos married in 1982, when she started collecting Lenox ornaments … and so her first family tree was filled with cream Lenox bisque. A few years later, after the birth of her son and daughter, they added a second tree. As the family traveled, they collected memories -- seashells, sand dollars and starfish, and trinkets that later became tree ornaments. So was born the Florida Tree filled with shells and topped with a starfish. Now with four grandchildren, the Yepes family has grown – and so has the Christmas tree collection. “This house gave me the opportunity to dedicate each room to a different tree, each with a different theme,” said Yepes, who along with Carlos, is known as a gracious host, often opening her house to charity fundraisers. Most of the Christmas trees are 9 feet high, with a 15-foot tree in the Great Room overlooking Tampa Bay covered completely with Lenox ornaments. There is even a small whimsical tree in their master closet. Trees are artificial with tiny LED lights, but she inserts real pine boughs in the Great Room tree to add a pine scent. A 5-foot wreath in the kitchen window is decorated with fruit ornaments in rose gold; a dining room window wreath is covered with cherubs, musical instruments and gold balls and sprays. Four half-trees in the foyer sport red Murano glass hearts, all equally divided with organza ribbon and Lenox gold icicles. Each has its own memory. The office tree is mainly hand-blown glass balls, many which the family blew themselves both here in St. Pete and while on vacation. On either side of the Great Room fireplace, 10-foot skinny trees in Asian vases are identical Bahamian Trees, garnished with Love, Peace and Hope, grapes and birds, vegetables and fruits.

Special family ornaments in the Yepes home include a bisque Lenox angel, red hand-blown Murano glass hearts, and a delicate Swarovski crystal ball.

A 5-foot dining room wreath overlooking downtown St. Pete is filled with golden glittery fruit, leaves and ornaments.

In the master bedroom is a Swarovski crystal tree, some are globes, others precisely cut reindeer, angels (her favorite), nativity scenes. The playful game room tree is topped by a monkey and filled with feathered and stuffed animals including Boyd teddy bears, feather butterflies and owls. Her daughter’s former bedroom tree is a Victorian theme, complete with white lace, pearls, fairies and angels; while her son’s former bedroom tree is filled with handcrafted birchwood ornaments. Yepes has a design background, so creates each tree and

wreath without assistance. When she begins, she divides trees into quadrants, and lays out ornaments on the floor so she can precisely place each one. She tries to work daily, taking two to three days to decorate each tree in her spare time, and aims to be completely finished by early December (although travel sometimes delays the process). When the holidays are over, the slow tear-down begins. The ornaments are removed, cleaned, lovingly wrapped and stored in boxes in their own special closets. But Beverly Yepes knows that it won’t be too long before she will see them all again.

Design for City or Beach Interiors Bring Sophistication, Elegance PHOTOS/ROB HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

BY SHAWN TANNEY RICHARDS From urban chic condo living to a luxury beachside retreat, Suzan Decker Ross, owner of Decker Ross Interiors, and her talented team of designers have been busy creating beautiful interiors throughout Florida for over 25 years. Downtown Style St. Petersburg has become one of their favorite locales due to the thriving downtown. At JMC Rowland Place, the Art Nouveau building offers lovely amenity areas for the residents and their guests to enjoy. These areas were the focus for the initial design work by Suzan Decker Ross and senior designer Marci Tempesta. “In keeping with the luxury urban vibe that is attracting so many people to downtown St. Petersburg, our design and color palette reflects the tasteful sophistication of the area,” Decker Ross explained. The Living Room and Game Room feature dark espresso wood floors, crown molding, and a neutral grey and taupe color scheme, punctuated by pops of vibrant orange. The design team maintained a classical elegance in the Living Room, selecting furniture pieces that complemented the architectural features of the fireplace, flanked by recessed built-in bookshelf nooks accented with interesting accessories. The beautiful baby grand piano anchors one corner of the room, offset by window walls featuring color block drapery panels. The Game Room provides a bit more casual comfort and entertainment options with a pool table, TV and high-top tables surrounded by leather barstools featuring nailhead trim and unique decorative hardware on the back. A contemporary chandelier, artwork and accessories complete the space. The neutral color palette continues into the hallways, with a designer carpet, paint and a few accent pieces, art and accessories providing the finishing touches. All of these common areas offer a comfortable yet classy design aesthetic for the residents’ enjoyment.

Beach Beauty “A short drive from downtown are the beautiful blue waters of St. Petersburg’s scenic coast, which provides a gorgeous backdrop for many of our designs,” Decker Ross commented. Located on a barrier island, this client’s spectacular home offers breathtaking views of the expansive waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Intracoastal Waterway. Senior designer Jen Kravchuk decided on a Rustic Modern Beach design for this waterfront retreat. A coastal dusty blue

color palette with gray undertones was carried throughout the home. The design is rich with textural contrast -- from the oyster shell chandelier to the embroidered drapery panels the eye is captured by the variety of subtle shades, layers, natural elements and finishes. A circular motif was carried throughout the open concept main living area, which provides a common design element within the various spaces. Specializing in both residential and commercial design, Decker Ross Interiors is located at 1445 Court Street in Clearwater. www.DeckerRoss.com 727-442-9996

PARC – 65 Years Serving Pinellas County

Programs offer skills, careers to adults with disabilities PHOTOS/PARC

PARC’s Culinary Arts instructor Christina Gallucci works with a student to prepare plates for the Top Chefs fundraiser held in August at the Morean Center for Clay. BY MARCIA BIGGS What’s on the menu today at Curry Villa? Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Money Mustard Sauce, Butternut Squash and Apple Fritters and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. Sound impressive? Perhaps so, if this were a restaurant. But it’s not. Curry Villa is a group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, one of four such facilities managed by PARC in Pinellas County, and this is Culinary Arts Class. No hotdogs on this menu. Chef Christina Gallucci is setting up the industrial kitchen on the second floor for her second class today. Pulling out the pork loin and baking pans, lining up the fresh squash. Her budding chefs – David, Marcus, TJ and Nick - will be arriving shortly for their weekly class to learn how things are done in a kitchen. They arrive in a bustle of excitement, first things first. They know to don an apron, wash their hands. As they gather around the metal prep table, Gallucci begins the class. It’s mostly show and tell as she rolls the slab of pork and slices it. The easier work –

cracking eggs, dipping the pieces, paring the skin off the squash, mixing the honey and mustard - is performed by her students. Chef smiles brightly; she is patient and kind, trying to involve each individual to the best of their ability. It can be challenging. Running an electric mixer. Flipping fritters in a frying pan just so. David in particular enjoys the accomplishments and accolades. An hour later, we all sit down to a hot lunch, enjoying the fruits of our labor. Happiness is wafting across the table. Chef comes out carrying poster boards with photos and today’s quiz begins: Who can name some ingredients we used today? Who can name the equipment and utensils we used? PARC’S 3-year-old Culinary Arts Program has 26 registered, and small classes of 4 to 8 take over the Curry Villa kitchen two days a week. At the end of the 10-week course, graduates receive a certificate, recipes, a chef hat and an apron. More than cooking, safety and sanitation skills, the course is also aimed at enhancing self-esteem, creativity and encouraging responsibility and a

SPL LIVING sense of accomplishment, says Gallucci. “Each person has different abilities, so it’s important to understand each one and work on a ‘person first’ basis,” she says. “Our hope with this program is that some of our clients will go on to a career, or be able to use these skills at home.” Big excitement in the Culinary Arts Program came in August at PARC’s annual TOP CHEFS event held at the Morean Center for Clay. The restaurant tasting and fundraiser engaged local restaurants, chefs and personalities in an evening of delicious dining and drinks, with assistance from some of the culinary students, of course. The Culinary Arts Program was highlighted with a special video presentation prior to the award presentation. Celebrating 65 Years In 2018, PARC marked 65 years of providing care and opportunities for children and adults of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The idea for PARC began in 1952 when Mrs. Edythe Ibold placed a small notice in The Evening Independent inviting parents of children with developmental disabilities to a meeting in the St. Petersburg City Hall. In 1953, the Pinellas Association for Retarded Children received its corporate charter and The Peter Pan School opened in 1964. The nonprofit soon secured six acres of land through the City Council at what is now PARC’S main campus near Tyrone Boulevard.

programs for toddlers to the aging. Most are “day campers,” transported via PARC’s 43-vehicle fleet; 90 adults are in the residential program. Some 125 employees range from therapists and social workers, to shuttle drivers, administrative, and vocational and arts instructors. President and CEO Karen Higgins is uniquely qualified to man the helm – the longtime St. Pete resident has been with PARC for over three decades. She has seen it grow and flourish and knows better than anyone the difference it has made in the lives of many families in Pinellas County. “I came in the early ‘80s when the state was still institutionalizing,” she said. “Back then, it was the only thing they knew. It was not considered unusual. We started the first preschool for children with developmental disabilities, and one of the first residential programs in Florida. Some of our adult clients have been with us for many years. We have people here who have grown from children to adults and know no other home.”

Today PARC serves up to 800 people annually offering nearly 40

In addition to the Culinary Program, PARC works with adults to pursue meaningful employment, says Higgins. They can choose to become artists and sell their work through a robust arts program, or enlist in the horticulture program where they can learn to grow and tend vegetables, herbs and flowering plants in outdoor raised bed gardens on campus. They can also earn money by performing light industrial work, such as packaging and labeling, in a campus work center.

SPL LIVING Higgins gives credit to the many Pinellas businesses, organizations, and individuals who sponsor or otherwise fund the programs, or offer job opportunities and internships. Through PARC’S Supporting Employment Program, over 100 individuals work in places like Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Bayfront Hospital, and Publix. In 2017-2018, over 70 local employers participated in the program.

PARC CEO and president Karen Higgins poses with artist Michelle at Florida Shines On, an art exhibit and fundraiser held this fall at the James Museum in St. Petersburg.

Indeed, PARC has longtime unwavering support from the power brokers and philanthropists of Pinellas County, chief among them is Tom James, former CEO of Raymond James Financial, says Higgins. “He has been one of our staunchest supporters,” she says. Board members throughout the decades read like a Who’s Who list – Duke Energy

Florida, Merrill Lynch, Bank of Tampa, Tampa Bay Rays, Johns Hopkins All Children’s, Morgan Stanley, to name a few. The ranks of dedicated volunteers is also steadfast. Andrea Castaneda, Director of Community Relations and Volunteers, works with hundreds of individuals, groups, and organizations who help organize events, man tables at festivals, perform office work, teach classes and help with building maintenance and landscaping. “Volunteers are the heart and soul of PARC,” she admits. “Without our volunteers, we would not be who we are today.” To learn more about PARC, go to www.parc-fl.org.

ARTS & CULTURE I don’t know about you, but it feels as though the holidays come around faster each year! How is it even possible that 2019 is nearing an end? I mean, it just began… didn’t it? Well, if you can explain it to me, I’m all ears. Fortunately, I just love the holidays, so while I try and unravel the complexities of my personal space/time continuum, I’ll share with you a small sampling of the many artsy goings on in our beautiful ‘Burg during the most wonderful time of the year. If you have events you’d like to share in upcoming issues, or you have an answer to that whole space/time conundrum, email me at ctovall5@gmail.com BY CINDY STOVALL

On Stage An American Dreamscape, the 2019-2020 season theme at American Stage, continues with an offering for “starstruck” holiday audiences. Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson, opens on November 20 and takes us back to the turn of the century. No, the last one. The Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s was a place for men of science ... MEN of science. Henrietta Leavitt contemplates the stars as she serves her astronomer employer, unable to touch a telescope or express an idea. She takes a journey to understand her place in the world and in the lives of those in her “orbit.” Runs Nov. 20-Dec. 22. www.americanstage.org For those of you familiar with the plot of The Lion in Winter, it doesn’t exactly conjure up those holiday warm and fuzzies – a king locking his wife away in prison for years, power hungry sons plotting murder and jockeying for ascendancy. Of course, you may know someone whose Christmas is exactly like that, it’s an interesting world. In any case, the story does in fact, take place during the holidays and that’s all the reason freeFall Theatre Company needs to stage it during that time. Radio Theatre Project

Keeping a bygone era alive in St. Pete PHOTOS/RADIO THEATRE PROJECT

A sign language interpreter accompanies the cast during live performances.

BY CINDY STOVALL

I was born to Depression-era parents. My father, a New York City police officer, often regaled us with tales of the radio shows of his youth - The Baby Snooks Show (starring Fanny Brice), Abbott & Costello, Burns & Allen, FDR’s Fireside Chats and, of course, his very favorite serial, The Shadow. His descriptions tickled our imaginations as he repeated dialogue from memory, imitated sound effects and delighted in his considerable knowledge of the actors lives and roles. It often occurred to me, even as a young child, that he secretly yearned to be a part of that world, his recreations were that affecting. In fact, the stories were so compelling, they almost made me consider the downside of television …. almost. Radio was a world where imagination reigned - a world slowly

crowded out and ultimately extinguished by the TV broadcasting boom that descended, for better or worse, in the late 1940s. My only experience of what existed before was inexorably tied to my father’s memory. You can imagine my excitement, a few years later, when my favorite Top 40 radio station began airing episodes of The Shadow on Saturdays at midnight. I stayed up to listen each week. Dad’s tepid objections never fooled me for a minute. His “secret” delight was, to me, as obvious as his love. Now, as I find myself in the same age group as Dad was back then, I feel the same child-like excitement every time I attend Radio Theatre Project.

ARTS & CULTURE Radio Revival Please forgive me for the detour down Memory Lane. I’ve shared this story so you will get the truest sense of what Radio Theatre Project, “RTP” to regulars, has come to mean to me and my older brother, Bruce. For the past decade, from October until May, on the fourth Monday of each month, Bruce and I make our way to The Studio @620 in downtown St. Pete. At 7pm, the magic begins, and we are transported back to a faraway place and time. The engaging staged readings performed in an “old timey” radio style, reunite us with our younger selves and with our beloved father. No doubt, many Radio Theatre Project “regulars” have very similar stories. It’s what, at least in part, keeps us all coming back month after month, year after year. Also, because it’s just so damn much fun.

over scripts and, once selected, revising them for “radio.” Agan took over as artistic director four years ago. “I feel so fortunate to have an opportunity to work with all these amazing people,” she says. All take roles in various productions, write scripts and Wilborn provides piano accompaniment. “We wear many hats,” says Rice. Everyone agrees, though, that a key person in pulling it all together early on, was Matt Cowley. “There would be no RTP without him,” says Agan. Cowley was producing a show on WMNF called Sound Design. He agreed to record, edit and broadcast RTP on his show. And they’ve never looked back. Currently, Cowley oversees sound design, runs the “Foley Orchestra” (theater-speak for the props used to create sound effects), and he also writes some scripts performed on stage. This includes crowd favorite and ongoing serial, Noel Berlin, Cabaret Detective - a hilarious collaboration with Paul Wilborn that skewers local politics, often with unexpected cameos by guest stars like St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman. Growing Strong The first season or two of any new company is a critical time. “We were broke,” muses Rice. “There were maybe 30 or so audience members, so we relied heavily on local actors and playwrights. It was eye opening to realize just how deep a well of talent we actually had right here.” An early Florida Humanities Council grant helped put some wind in RTP’s sails. “What kept things growing was the quality in every aspect of production,” says Devin Jones. The crowds grew. The word spread. “After the grant period, when we actually began charging an admission fee, we held our breath. But the people came. We’ve raised the price twice more over the years, and still, the people come.” Now, most performances are SRO.

So how did Radio Theatre Project, a unique jewel in St. Pete’s thespian crown, come to be? I sat down with Studio @620 cofounder and executive director Bob Devin Jones, as well as current and previous RTP artistic directors Bonnie Agan and Mimi Rice. “The fact is, that Radio Theatre Project came about because I was a 70-year-old actress,” says Rice. ”I was frustrated over the dwindling opportunities for an actress of ‘a certain age’ in booking good roles. I happened to read an article on radio theater in American Theatre Magazine and immediately brought the idea to Bob.” Once again @620’s founding mantra was invoked. “The answer is ALWAYS yes,” said Devin Jones. “I told Mimi we would house and host, but she had to run it.” And so, Rice’s search for an acting ensemble, scripts and tech assistance began. “It was a labor of love,” says Rice, “but I loved every minute. I knew it was a good idea.” Bonnie Agan came on board, initially, as one of the founding members of the RTP ensemble. A prolific actor and voice-over talent, Agan says she felt as if she had “found a home.” Also in that inaugural group were Rice’s husband, Richard Rice, Jim Wicker, LeRoy Mitchell, Paul Wilborn and Eugenie Bondurant and, of course, Bob Devin Jones. There were certainly others, but after a decade, this core group is still there and going strong. Wicker acts as dramaturg, scouring

After another fruitful relationship developed with The Dramatists Guild of America, “scripts began coming in from all over the country and beyond,” says Agan. “More and more incredibly talented actors and writers have become aware of RTP. They often contact me and ask to submit work or participate as guest performers. It’s an embarrassment of riches,” Agan says with a broad smile. “And the quality continues to improve.”

ARTS & CULTURE Cherry and Jacob Barrens, to name just a few.

The attention to detail is evident. For instance, each show has an American Sign Language translator to broaden audience access. Then, last season, a beautiful frame for the stage was built by set designer Steve Mitchell to enhance the visual effect and branding. There is carefully executed choreography, tech, blocking and rehearsal on level with any professional company. Stay Tuned So, what’s on tap for the 2019-2020 season? The opening production was performed to a rapt, sell-out crowd on October 28 with the usual Halloween antics. “We always have so much fun being back together for the opener,” says Agan. “We love to present so many types of work: comedy, drama, satire, holiday related themes, special programming, etc. I like to think of it as taking the audience on a journey. And it should always end with laughter.” Many well-loved actors have either joined the group, or will be making guest appearances this season - Lisa Powers Tricomi, David Warner, Vicki Daignault, Jim Sorensen, Stephanie Roberts, Colleen

But through the growth, the expanded audiences and sources of talent, the heart of RTP still beats for St. Pete. “We’re a family,” says Rice, “and we love to tell stories to our extended family - the audience. People love to hear a story. It’s amazing to see folks hanging around, talking, long after the performance is over. We almost have to kick them out!” Devin Jones says that the Studio @620 wants to be a part of whatever is good for the community. “Many amazing programs have been incubated here over the past 15 years,” he says. “And RTP has been absolutely foundational for us. It’s simply delicious.” For more information: www.thestudioat620.org Previous seasons of Radio Theatre Project can be found on www.SoundCloud.com/ radiotheatreproject To listen to Cindy Stovall’s audio version of this story with complete interviews, go to her Beauty & The ‘Burg Podcast at www.heliumradio.com

Beautiful Bugs

An MFA exhibit shows exotic insects in a whole new light PHOTO /MARCIA BIGGS

BY MARCIA BIGGS While some people collect books or coins or Christmas ornaments, Jennifer Angus has spent years collecting dead bugs – well, insects she prefers to call them (there is a difference, insects have six legs). She has searched out and collected thousands upon thousands of specimens, mostly from tropical climates, all departed from this world. Her startlingly bizarre yet beautiful exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg fills nearly 7,000 square feet of gallery space in the Hough Wing with some 5,000 big insects. The Grasshopper and the Ant and Other Stories, as told by Jennifer Angus, was inspired by Aesop's Fables, neo-Victorian design, climate change and the world of nature. Sound strange? Each viewer will take away their own interpretation, but be prepared to wonder. Enter the world of Jennifer Angus and you have entered a world of dead beetles, cicadas, katydids and weevils in playful wall designs and suspended in jelly jars; there are dollhouses dripping in beeswax, a bestial dinner party, and glassdomed scenes akin to snowball globes, although these you cannot pick up and shake. Some displays evoke mystical drama with animal skulls, Bulgarian clay beehives, decaying leaves and dried flowers; others are nearly human-like. Walk through a small dark entry room and along one side, glowing in transparent reds and yellows, are two rows of jelly jars containing the carcasses of dead insects. Angus made real jelly and carefully placed each critter inside. Creepy or fascinating? It takes a moment to decide. This is the Ant’s Gallery, dark

like an ant’s tunnel; it sets the stage for the next room. Like Alice entering Wonderland, the main gallery with its twostory ceiling appears cheerful with lime green walls covered in floral patterns, topped with sunbursts. But look closer. The intricate scrolling designs are strategically placed insects, pinned precisely to the wall to create a flowing “wallpaper” design. In one corner, 12-foot tall dollhouses are dripping in beeswax, a solemn ode to the importance of bees in human existence and a warning about global warming. There are no insects to be found. Could it be from the rampant use of pesticides? Angus wants viewers to think. The mood lightens considerably at the Victorian Dinner Party in the adjoining gallery which gives us the wildlife version of a fancy dinner party. This is no Downton Abbey. The guests seated at this elegant banquet table are all Florida native animals. Angus plays with the intertwining roles in the animal world. Dinner guests are real animals (all taxidermy): a deer and racoons, playful otters, feuding bobcats and a naughty squirrel all appear ready to chow down on a dinner of fruit, honey, nuts and, of course, tasty insects. Looking down from the walls are the heads of more animals, as if wanting to join the party, amid circles and ellipses and a trail of winged insects. The final gallery presents a large Victorian apothecary-type Cabinet of Curiosities as a centerpiece, with 130 drawers each containing its own vignette of the insect world. During the Age of Enlightenment, when science began to challenge religious beliefs, the cabinets were

ARTS & CULTURE small collections of extraordinary objects which attempted to tell stories about the wonders and oddities of the natural world. Spread throughout this gallery are seven black cases (vintage typewriter cases), each depicting scenes from the Seven Deadly Sins. A series of bell jars show insects in various scenarios, each looking at Victorian-era microscope slides. The tiny critters are often placed in humanlike stances, gazing at books, standing on two legs. Four display cases are giant still-lifes with animal skulls, silk cocoons and fascinating handmade clay beehives from Bulgaria. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Argus says her first love was archaeology. Now she is a Professor of Textiles at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But she is also an environmentalist, one who asks questions about the world and nature and the part humans play in its destruction. She challenges beliefs and wants to educate the public on the importance – and beauty – of the insect world. “I seek to rehabilitate the image of insects and draw correlations between humans and members of the six-legged kingdom,” Angus said at the opening of the exhibit. “The fear we have of insects is generally unwarranted. Their role in the environment is vital [to human survival], whether it be in the pollination of flowers, which in turn produce the fruits we so enjoy, or the decomposition of matter. Insects are both beautiful and essential.

I hope this exhibition will inspire conversations about what we value, the stories we are part of, and the small actions we can take today to make change for the greater good.” This is her largest installation; her collection has been exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC and around the world including Australia, France, Germany, Japan and Spain. None of the insects on display are endangered, the artist points out. They are either farm raised—primarily in Madagascar, Malaysia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea—or collected by the indigenous peoples who live in the areas from which they originate. None of the insects have been colored and no, she does not collect them herself. She buys most of them from a dealer. There are no cockroaches (too icky) and no butterflies (too fragile). Even if you are not a fan of insects, a visit to The Grasshopper and the Ant is guaranteed to be an entertaining and thoughtprovoking experience. And please, don’t call them bugs! The Grasshopper and the Ant and Other Stories as told by Jennifer Angus runs through January 5, 2020. The author will present a lecture on November 16 at the museum. For more information on hours, admission and related events, go to mfastpete.org.

The “ento-cuisine” will be complemented by an adventurous cocktail menu, which will feature a broader selection of edible insects.
