Despite the cold and rainy weather, the children have been spending lots of time outside this week. This research report from Natural England highlights some of the many benefits from children being connected to and spending time in the natural world. How the Natural Environment can support Children and Young PeopleEIN067
(naturalengland.org.u k)
These include a reduction in and recovery from stress and anxiety, improved capacity to concentrate or pay attention, ability to self-regulate emotions and better academic performance.
Just as for sport that I wrote about last week, being outside in nature is a valuable and key part of our educational offering at St Peter’s 2-8. The behaviours and dispositions that we see from your children as a result of outdoor activities such as being at Forest School and being outside at break and after school care are those that are evidenced by research. Being in the natural world, particularly when self -directed allows children to follow their interests, learn how to assess and choose risk, negotiate

social situations and collaborate, think creatively and problem solve, all of which are keys skills for future success.
The report also found evidence to suggest that time spent in nature may “buffer” any negative health impacts of excessive screen time, therefore nature may be a useful public health resource for youth psychological well-being. This is very important as we are seeing increasing concern about the amount of time children are spending on screens and the negative effects this is having. Last Friday Ofcom published ‘A Window into Young Children’s Online Worlds A window into young children’s online worldsOfcom.
It found that 24% of children aged 5-7 years old own a smartphone phone and 76% have their own tablet. Children aged 5-7 are spending increasing amounts of time online, gaming, watching content on YouTube, on social media such as Tik Tok and Instagram and messaging using WhatsApp.
Additionally, the rates of children aged 5-7 having their own social media accounts has increased year on year. A key positive was that 76% of parents said that they had talked to their children about
staying safe online. These are interesting facts to consider alongside the research about being outside in nature and physical activity. At school using digital technologies as a tool for learning and creating content has significant value but equally this must not be at the expense of other activities that benefit children.
This week we say goodbye to Miss Platts as she heads off to begin her maternity leave. We can’t wait to meet her baby when he or she arrives, and we all wish her a happy maternity leave.
Just a reminder that we have class photographs on Tuesday. Children can come in either summer or winter uniform, but please could they have school shoes and long hair tied back with navy hair accessories. If your child has PE on Tuesday, they should come to school in their uniform and being their PE kit to school.
Have a lovely weekend.
Best wishes,

House Captains
MICKLEGATE
Hi! My name is Rupert and I am very proud to be Micklegate House Captain.
I live at home with my mummy and daddy and I visit my grandad and granny and my cousins.
I like to play football at school and I love to play tennis at the weekend.
I enjoy building lego models and playing with my friends. One of my favourite foods is pizza and I have just learned how to ride a jet ski which is scary, but fun!
MONK WALMGATE
Hello! I’m Hugh and I’m delighted to be Monk’s House Captain. I’m very happy because this is my last ever chance of being House Captain.
I really like helping (doing chores) and helping other people. I love dogs so much that I have one of my own; his name is Thor and not being biased, he is the cutest dog ever!
I think St Peter’s is the best school ever. I have many friends who were house captains and now retired. I think the people in Year 2 will be very good house captains too.
As a house captain I will treat everyone fairly and nicely. I want this school to be a safe environment. That’s all from me. Bye!
Hello, my name is India. I am 8 years old. My brother is sixteen years old and is in the senior school.
I play the clarinet and my favourite sports are netball, football and darts. My hobbies are art, reading and sports. My favourite books are Olga da Polga, Polar Bear Explorers, and best of all Mallory Towers.
I am glad to be House Captain of Walmgate this term. I hope we get lots of house points this term. Go Walmgate (the best house ever)
