THE LORICA OF SAINT PATRICK

This has become a week to remember Saint Patrick! There sure are some fun ways to celebrate the folk stories about him. However, if you are beyond simply drinking green beer to remember Patrick, I offer you these words, a prayer attributed to him. In the Irish tradition, a “lorica” is a “protection prayer.” This familiar version was translated by Cecil Frances Alexander (who also wrote “All Things Bright and Beautiful!”)

I bind unto myself today  the strong Name of the Trinity,  by invocation of the same,  the Three in One, and One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever,  by power of faith, Christ’s Incarnation;  his baptism in the Jordan river;  his death on cross for my salvation;  His bursting from the spiced tomb;  his riding up the heavenly way;  his coming at the day of doom:  I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power  of the great love of cherubim;  the sweet “Well done” in judgement hour;  the service of the seraphim;  confessors’ faith, apostles’ word,  the patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls;  all good deeds done unto the Lord,  and purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today  the virtues of the starlit heaven,  the glorious sun’s life-giving ray,  the whiteness of the moon at even,  the flashing of the lightning free,  the whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,  the stable earth, the deep salt sea,  around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today  the power of God to hold and lead,  his eye to watch, his might to stay,  his ear to hearken to my need;  the wisdom of my God to teach,  his hand to guide, his shield to ward;  the word of God to give me speech,  his heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,  Christ behind me, Christ before me,  Christ beside me, Christ to win me,  Christ to comfort and restore me,  Christ beneath me, Christ above me,  Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,  Christ in hearts of all that love me,  Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,  the strong Name of the Trinity,  by invocation of the same,  the Three in One, and One in Three.  Of whom all nature hath creation,  eternal Father, Spirit, Word:  praise to the Lord of my salvation,  salvation is of Christ the Lord.

(attributed to Saint Patrick, died circa 461 A.D.)

STEWARDSHIP

CHILDREN’S STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN CONTINUES IN LENT

Thanks to all of the children of the parish who are sharing with the church as part of the 2023 Stewardship Campaign! This year we are encouraging families throughout the Cathedral to make stewardship a family habit! Stewardship chairs Ron and Kate Henry will lead the efforts in educating Cathedral children on the basic roles that money serves – spending on the here and now, saving for the future, and sharing with others in need. As part of the Lenten season, we are encouraging children to make their own pledges and sharing with the Cathedral community.

Children can return the pledge card below to the Children’s Chapel Offertory or during the main service at “Big Church.” Children who submit a pledge form will receive their very own pledge envelopes to share their contributions with the Cathedral. Learn more at cathedralATL.org/kidspledge. Thank you!

I pledge to the Cathedral of St. Philip because:

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN LENT

Join us on Wednesday evenings during Lent for a light supper and program offerings for all. We’ll start in Child Hall with dinner at 5:30 p.m., and break into smaller groups for programming from 6–7 p.m. Godly Play, for children through 5th grade, and childcare for children 3 and under will be available. Meals must be ordered in advance. Register for dinner at cathedralATL.org/LentenDinner. Please note that all of the study books are available at cathedralbookstore.org.

CHOOSE FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: Book Study with Canon Julia Mitchener

Cathedral Book Store

Join us for a five-week study of Stephanie Land’s acclaimed book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. Ms. Land’s story is compelling and highly narrative, chronicling her struggle to provide a stable life for herself and her young daughter after fleeing domestic abuse. While we will discuss ways in which we might better help people who are unhoused in our own community, the main focus of the class will be to gain better understanding of the housing crisis and the societal dynamics that contribute to it. Please contact Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@ cathedralATL.org, for more information.

“The Chosen” with the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith

Gould Room

*Please note this class begins at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. option to arrive and join the discussion followed by video clip highlights. “The Chosen!” It’s arguably the greatest breakthrough in Christian film media so far this century. Join a core group of Cathedral-goers as we gather together on Wednesday evenings in Lent for a free film screening and follow-up discussion co-moderated by the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith.

Book Study with Canon Lauren Holder

Conference Room 239

Parishioner Sara Blackwood and Canon Lauren Holder are facilitating a weekly conversation using the book Good Inside: A Guide To Becoming the Parent You Want To Be by Dr. Becky Kennedy. While the book is geared towards parenting, it is truly a book about relationships, and this conversation is open to all. Alongside the book, we will explore the baptismal covenant, what it means to be created in the image of God, the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, and how we can support one another in our walk with Christ. Your presence will bless our conversation—no reading necessary!

Book Study with Adam Mathes

Chapter Room (319)

Regarded by some as the second most influential book in the western world (behind only the Bible), St. Augustine’s Confessions profoundly shaped the Christian faith and the ways in which Western minds regard themselves, their primary relationships, and their pursuit of the good. This reading group will move quickly through Confessions and gather to discuss key elements to aid in understanding and to enrich the faith of participants.

ALL GOD’S CHILDREN: A CONVERSATION ON BEING CHRISTIAN AND LGBTQ+

Sunday, March 26, 5:30 p.m.

Gould Room

Join Cathedral parishioner Hubert Tate as he engages in a conversation with fellow parishioners Del King and Victor Moldovan, the first LGBTQ+ couple married at the Cathedral of St. Philip, after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down the ban on marriage in 2015. Though the Cathedral had blessed same-sex marriages prior to 2015, the union between King and Moldovan was the first formal ceremony that legally recognized the marriage. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Gould Room on Sunday, March 26. Come and enjoy this intriguing conversation with small bites and wine. RSVP to cathedralATL.org/AllGodsChildren. A voluntary donation of any commitment is asked to support the Cathedral’s Ricks Wheeler fund, which is a ministry to support programs and activities to persons living with HIV/AIDS.

SIGN UP TO JOIN A FOYERS GROUP

Join us in the mountains for the 2023 parish retreat at Kanuga in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Enjoy a weekend full of spirituality and fellowship with other Cathedral parishioners and clergy. Kanuga is a wonderful place to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and experience God with the beloved community. We will offer an adult and children program on Saturday morning and enjoy worshiping together in the informal chapel on Sunday. Early bird registration is $230 per adult and $100 per child. After April 15 the fees are $255 per adult and $110 per child. Register at cathedralATL.org/Kanuga. Contact Lisa McNamara, lmcnamara@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

Foyers offers small group dinner opportunities throughout the year. Members of each group take turns hosting—some providing the space, others providing the food, all providing meaningful fellowship. This is a great way to get to know a handful of people without feeling overwhelmed. Groups are intentionally intergenerational and eclectic. The Super Foyers dinner – where all groups convene to kick off the year – will be Sunday, April 23 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. To sign up for a Foyers group, contact Danny and Jennifer DuBose at jdubose@ goddard-group.com by Tuesday, April 4.

COMMUNITY

ADULT Education

THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 19

Old Fashioned Sunday School with Dale Adelmann, Ph.D. Child Hall , 10:10 a.m.

This week, Dale Adelmann, our Cathedral Canon for Music, will talk to the class about how and why music is a vital part of our worship experiences. Dale will touch on the wide range of the traditions from which we draw our hymns and anthems, and will provide some insight into how our music is chosen to fit into the themes of the church year and the various types of services we offer at the Cathedral. Bring your questions. It’s a rare opportunity to have Dale with us at this hour (instead of in rehearsal with the Cathedral Choir), so we want to make the most of it!

Living Faith with Dr. Allison B. Hill Chapter Room (319), 10:10 a.m.

This week’s Living Faith topic is “ How do we support families in transition?” led by Dr. Allison Hill. Changing family structures, whether via separation or divorce, is challenging. Supporting loved ones and friends in our community through this process can be even more difficult. Join Dr. Hill as she facilitates a discussion about families in transition, particularly when there are children involved. Combining both a law degree and a degree in clinical psychology, Dr. Hill will discuss what “bests interests of the child” means and how we as a community can keep that standard at the forefront to offer health, hope, and ultimately happiness to individuals going through separations and divorce.

Young Professionals “Coffee & Conversation Cards” Walthour Library, 10:10 a.m.

On Sunday mornings during the formation hour, the Young Professionals’ Group will gather in Walthour Library using conversation cards to inspire Christian discussions on scripture, faith and life.

Body and Soul: Men’s Health and Spirituality

Walthour Library and on Zoom, 1 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Stuart Higginbotham of Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville, Georgia will be the guest speaker this month. Fr. Stuart contributed to and co-edited the volume Contemplation and Community: A Gathering of Fresh Voices for a Living Tradition (Crossroad, 2019) and is the author of The Heart of a Calling: Practicing Christian Mindfulness in Congregational Ministry (Crossroad, 2021).

Enjoy Biblical Greek Room 239 and on Zoom, 1:15 p.m.

This newcomer-friendly class is open to beginners, while including long-term members who enjoy exchanging tips, best learning practices, and coaching points on how to translate the Greek New Testament. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

MISSION

THE CATHEDRAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 10, 2023 FOR THE 2023-2024 ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR

The Cathedral Scholars program has been blessed with growth. We began our mission in 2019 supporting one Cathedral scholar with $5,000 and by 2022 we supported twelve Cathedral scholars attending eleven different universities with more than $70,000 in scholarships. Our prayer is for these numbers to grow again in 2023.

By supporting students who deserve to attend college but need various forms of support, this ministry of the Cathedral is a blessing for the students, their families, and the Cathedral community. The program’s primary objective is to support our scholars both during their time in college and beyond with individual support (phone calls, gift baskets, etc.), group get togethers, references, introductions to professional contacts, and more. We particularly strive to help lower the amount of student debt scholars incur.

We encourage everyone within the Cathedral Community – clergy, members, staff, parochial entities and beyond – to help spread the word about the scholars and help us identify students within the immediate Cathedral community as well as in the broader Atlanta community. Please also consider supporting the Cathedral Scholars program with your prayers, time, and treasure. You can contact the Cathedral Scholars committee for additional information or to find out how you can help at scholars@cathedralATL.org.

For those who would like to apply to become a Cathedral scholar, please note that the deadline to apply for the 2023-2024 academic year is April 10, 2023. Applications can be made at cathedralATL.org/scholarship.

PASTORAL Care SPIRITUALITY

THIRD MONDAY FACILITATED LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ

PRAYERS FOR PEACE

March 20, 7 p.m.

Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a twoday workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive.

The cost is $175 for Cathedral members and $250 for nonCathedral members. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. The payment is non-refundable by April 14; and before that date, there is a possibility of up to a 50% refund. Register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST. For questions, please contact the Rev. Canon Cathy Zappa.

Please join us for a contemplative Third Monday of March. We’ll begin in Child Hall for an hour of walking the sacred labyrinth path starting at 7:00 p.m. Or come a few minutes early for a brief introduction if you are new to the labyrinth. Carlisle Dent is our Veriditastrained labyrinth facilitator.

Then, come to Mikell Chapel at 8:00 for Taizé Prayers for Peace. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, silence, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. Sandra Carey and Barbara Bazzel are our Taizé coordinators.

The facilitated Labyrinth walk and Taizé service take place every 3rd Monday at the Cathedral. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend! Questions? Contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031.

FARMERS MARKET

... AND ONE FOR YOUR NEIGHBOR

The Cathedral Farmers Market takes place every Saturday through December 16 in the Cathedral parking lot from 8:30 a.m. –noon. This parochial entity of the Cathedral provides fresh fruits and vegetables from local and sustainable farms, prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and a variety of other goods created, curated, and crafted by local small businesses.

In addition, the farmers market offers a place for community and outreach for the Cathedral. You can leave a prayer request, learn more about happenings at the Cathedral, and provide food for our community partner Intown Collaborative Ministries by dropping off canned and shelf-stable goods at the market’s information tent or participating in the “One for Your Neighbor” program. Just look for the “One for Your Neighbor” signs at the farmers’ stalls to purchase fresh produce for the ICM food pantry which is delivered each Saturday after market. Also, as a Georgia Fresh for Less partner, SNAP dollars (formally known as food stamps) are doubled for purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables making eating healthy more accessible for all.
