January 2015 Restoring a City’s Image—Through Images by Dan Cross St. Louis has received more than its share of bad press lately. The negative portrayal of the city extended beyond national cable news outlets to become a public relations nightmare on an international scale. This is disturbing to most residents of the St. Louis area, none more so than public relations professionals like Chris Kuban. Kuban, nephew of local bandleader Bob Kuban, saw the attention focused on the city as an opportunity. To help counter the negative images on the news, Kuban created a business and website to showcase the beauty, history, culture, and architecture of St. Louis captured through the lenses of local photographers. “Although we launched the site December 4th, I originally started 314Photos.com in memory of my father (Larry Kuban) to promote and sell his amazing photographs taken over the last 50 years in St. Louis.” Due to the success of his brother’s band, Larry Kuban had frequent access to Club Imperial and many of the Teen Towns in St. Louis in the Mid-60’s. Using a Hasselblad camera, Larry captured beautiful images of legendary St. Louis musicians like Ike and Tina Turner, as well as touring acts like James Brown and Tony Bennett.

“My father always wanted to share his work, but he was a creative person rather than a business person, so he never got the recognition he deserved. I decided to use my skills and my connections to help promote his photography.” Then, after the events of the past few months, the scope of Kuban’s mission expanded. “We launched the site in December in the hope of promoting a positive image of St. Louis through the eyes of the people that love this city so much: local photographers.” One of those photographers is Mark Polege of Highland. “When I saw images on TV of people burning other people’s businesses, I thought, ‘that is not the St. Louis I know.’” One look at his work, and you can see why. Mark’s photos often focus on the architectural marvels of the city, including the Gateway Arch, the Stan Musial/Veterans Memorial bridge, and the Fox Theater. After talking with Chris Kuban about the goals of 314photos.com, Mark signed up and agreed to offer some of his photographs on the site. A self-taught photographer, Mark began shooting pictures on black and white film during six years in North Dakota. “There was not a lot else to do there. I started taking pictures of abandoned houses and buildings as a kind of archeology, but then it gradually began shifting into more of an art form.” Though he had a couple stints in journalism, working for the Belleville News Democrat and the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Mark’s interest in photography definitely leans toward fine art. “I’ve been working to get my work into galleries. I had two photographs in the recent STL at 250 art show at the Sheldon. One of them is now on display at Seven Sushi in Belleville, and the other is in the window at Kaskaskia Engineering on Main Street.” Mark’s photos are distinctive because of their dazzling light. “I think about it as painting with light,” he explains. “I often shoot very slow exposures with a very small aperture, f18 or f22. Some of the images I took inside the Fox Theater were actually 30 second exposures because it was pretty dark in there.” Other interesting slow exposure photographs he has done include a spinning Ferris wheel, the moon over St. Louis, and a gorgeous shot of fireworks at the downtown riverfront. “I took that picture from Martin Memorial Park in East St. Louis. There were so many people on the observation deck that it was hard to get a good view, so I finally set up my tripod on top of the giant compass there. I had the best seat in the house!” One of the things Mark likes best about 314photos is what he liked about the STL at 250 art show. “It is so interesting to see all these different perspectives, different views on the same city from so many different artists. Everyone has their own vision and angle on it, which is really fun to see.”

January 2015 Mark views 314photos much the way he views Straight Up Magazine (to which he is also a frequent contributor). “It is an opportunity to let people see a positive image of our area and all the great things it has to offer.” The site is designed so people all over the world can purchase galleryquality framed photographic prints of St. Louis landmarks and events. Founder Chris Kuban explains, “We have partnered with a high-end printer to print, mount, carefully pack and ship each photo sold, as well as number them if they are offered through a limited edition status. Photos on this site will be available for purchase from 8” x 8” up to 30” x 40” with the goal of promoting St. Louis in a positive way.”

January 2015

My Mother’s Hands by Paul Seibert I am so fascinated by my mother’s hands. My mother is 94 years old now. I have known her for 66 of those years. In that time, her hands have bathed me, changed my diapers, done the laundry, cooked thousands of meals, fed the chickens and so many other wondrous things.

They have graced many a situation, those wondrous hands. They are now still wondrous, but no longer serve many of the functions they once accomplished. It is some 20 years ago that arthritis began its handiwork on my mother’s hands. It’s a condition I do not pretend to understand. I only know what I observe. And that is that her hands are now twisted and curved. Once straight fingers bend to the right and to the left.

I guess I remember how young and soft her hands were when I was small. How strong they were in their femininity. How graciously they welcomed friends and family into the farmhouse kitchen. How gloriously they complemented the simple, singular ring on each. My mother’s hands used to sew our family’s clothes. They used to darn socks. They used to drive the family car – and even, on occasion, the family farm grain truck. Oh, the dishes those hands have washed. And the garden vegetables they picked, cleaned, cut, diced, pickled and canned. Her thumbs offer little opposition as once they did. They have diminished with age. They appear painful yet blessedly they are not. They are largely dysfunctional. They can barely hold a spoon much less a needle or a pin. Shoe laces have given way to Velcro. No more dishes. No more meals. We still hold hands but now it is I who grip her, not her who grips me.

There was a time, long before we met, that my mother’s hands stitched samplers, wrote beautiful letters, played the guitar and painted in oils. I’m sure they held boys’ hands, much as they did my father’s. Long, slender fingers that entwined gracefully between those of others. I remember how large and comforting those soft, warm hands were to me as a youngster, holding their guidance in mine as we traversed the sidewalks and steps of stores, schools and church hallways. I can still feel them as they touched my shoulders in her embrace on my graduation, my marriage, the birth of my own child.

January 2015 And my mother’s hands remind me of a pendant I had as a teenager. The inscription on the back read “Praying Hands”. It was the replica of an artwork by Albrecht Dürer. And I remember the story, true or not, that accompanied the piece.

Elsie Seibert - Straight Up Magazine Matriarch September 6, 1920 - December 25, 2014

The story told of two brothers, both artists by nature, who wished to study art at a great university. Neither had the resources to pay for college. Together, they created the pact that one of them would go off to study while the other worked in the local mines to pay his brother’s fees. Upon completion, the first brother would return home and work to fund his brother’s terms at school. Albrecht went first. His studies lasted several years. He became an accomplished and sought after artisan. He returned to fund his brother through his successful art trade only to find that the years of cold, damp, hard labor of the mines had taken its toll upon his brother. His fingers had been broken. Arthritis had set painfully in. His shaking hands could no longer manage the tools of his artistic talents. Albrecht paid tribute to his stricken brother by creating his best known drawing “Hands”. Better known as “The Praying Hands”, the meticulous work depicts his brother’s shattered hands raised in prayer. The image has been --- in print, sculpture, jewelry --- an icon of the blessing of one individual to another. And it is such that I see my mother’s hands. They may not be able to hold a pen or a brush. But they so hold the everlasting gift of love that is mymother. A gift that abides in inner strength, no finger strength required.
