Woman of substance:
Pooling creativity to benefit the community by Robyn L. Kirsch I am woman, hear me roar - a common anthem of ladies pulling themselves by the bootstraps and bringing dreams to action - something the iconic figure in the local community of Belleville, Kim Vrooman, A.K.A. Kimmy V, personifies. As a fixture of the Bellevegas landscape, she has not only influenced the lives of many with her candid, fiery lyrics and soulful song-o-plenty, but she has acted as a pillar of strength to the many women who look up to her. Growing up with a military background and a mother, Joy Armour Hudgins, who spent years as a family advocacy program manager for the U.S. Army and, later, a manager of the Shelter Shop for the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, it isn’t a surprise that Vrooman has grown to be a selfless, empathetic individual who goes to all lengths to help those around her. “I always knew Kim was a giver, not a taker - she’s been a loving individual her whole life, and I love being able to volunteer at the shop,” Hudgins said. Woman with many hats - Vrooman is the lead singer of the local band Earthsol, winning the title of Best Female Vocalist in 2003 by the Riverfront Times and she’s been hosting an open mic in Soulard at the Shanti, which was voted Best Open Mic in St. Louis in 2008. As Executive Director and founder of the Tapestry of Community Offerings, A.K.A. TOCO, which she built from the ground up about 11 years ago with her husband, Tony, friends and family, Vrooman has aided many initiatives to help families and children in our area, as well as funded through TOCO annual single mother scholarships at Southwestern Illinois College. After completing her higher education at Southern Illinois University, she moved on to teach English at SWIC. Although, she doesn’t teach at SWIC currently, we could all learn a lesson from her, which is to love your neighbor - she’s a pro. Not only an artist - musically, lyrically, poetically in her own right Vrooman is a passionate individual who brings smiles and spirit to her fans and comrades, said Dan Cross, longtime friend of Vrooman and bandmate of Earthsol who works bass, sax and vocals, when he’s not spearheading the film department at SWIC. “I’ve known her for a long time, in varying capacities, and she literally has the power to bring people together,” Cross said. “When we’re on stage or with friends or anywhere, really, she just lights up a crowd, no matter big or small, and everyone becomes one big family.”

hosting our own community programs. Today TOCO hosts seven different community programs. What were some of the benefiting organizations from the annual TOCO Festivals? The past two TOCO Festivals were record breakers thanks to TOCO Board Vice President Teresa Parker; owner of The Shanti in Historic Soulard. She took the festival to a new level. Because of her influence on the festival’s success, and the success at the resale shop, run by Colleen Cramsey, TOCO has been able to operate a business which houses the TOCO office which gives me a place to work and develop and maintain our direct service programs, all of our event storage, the TOCO Shop, The TOCO Textile Pantry, TOCO Recycling efforts, and more. How has the TOCO Shop been involved with Women’s Herstory? Tapestry of Community Offerings NFP took over Herstory Weekend proper in its second year of existence. I originally started it with Amy Cyrus, former owner of the Ground Floor Club. While I was on staff at SWIC, I became a member and, at one time, Chair of the Women’s History Month, or Herstory Month Committee. At that time, I suggested that the event start providing a scholarship. That is when the event turned from just a night of music to a night with a purpose. The only way TOCO Shop specifically has been involved is that we cross promote the event (we give out discount entrance coupons when you donate in March to TOCO Shop). TOCO Shop also decorates all of our events. And TOCO Shop also received one year’s donations from the clothing exchange portion of the event (although, we no longer do that feature). What are the plans for next year’s TOCO Festival? This year’s TOCO Interview with Kimmy V: Festival will happen for our fourth year at Jellystone Park in Eureka, MO, How has your shop grown since its inception? When we opened the shop, September 27 & 28. TOCO Festival has a lot to offer this year. For the 2nd there were no paid employees and a few volunteers. We donated most of year in a row, we are hosting our direct service feature within the festival. our funds to other not for profits such as Make-A-Wish Foundation, with We invite different groups of children and families in need in our comthe exception of one single parent scholarship we hosted at SWIC, and our munity to come out to the day camp aspect of our Saturday during festival. annual toy and supply drive. After some consultation and thought, I decided They will partake in a number of workshops and creative arts and sciences that, in order to grow TOCO fully into our mission, we would need to start sessions, free of charge. Last year we served 28 children. Those particular 4

June 2013 families were from homes which had endured the loss of a loved one; particularly suicide survivors. The festival is going to be great this year! Our 12th year! The musical line-up includes: EarthSol (my band); Vitamen A; Sully; BOB, Elemental Shakedown, Following the Water, Cree Rider, Old Salt Union, and many more! There are numerous kids’ activities, PM Babysittters Club, and lots of fun for the whole family. How old are your kids now? And your husband - is he still an integral part of your music and TOCO? Emma is almost 2, and JP is 8. Tony is doing good. His band, Vitamen A, has been taking a break from playing out to focus on songwriting and development until the summertime. He is the Marketing Director for Camp Ondessonk; an amazing nature camp in Southern Illinois. He also works with Triple Jam Productions and they will run the summer concert series at the Alton Amphitheater again this summer. He is a busy man too! How many volunteers do you have working at the TOCO shop? We have about 20-30 active volunteers; some come once a month, some once a week, some once a day. All of them ARE AMAZING PEOPLE. Our youngest volunteer is two and our oldest - I don’t want to guess... We have a good group of caring, thoughtful individuals. It is like a club for givers. We are always looking for folks to join the club! What are some of your programs and services at the TOCO Shop? The shop itself is a gift to the community it serves. By offering very low cost, high quality items, there are folks who live better lives because the shop is there. That sounds funny at first, but we have regulars that come in daily, weekly, monthly. Everyone has a story. We just enjoy seeing everyone and being able to provide them with a service. We also host the TOCO Textile Pantry, and because of the shop, in 2012 TOCO Textile Pantry, through a referral program with other social service agencies, provided clothing, shoes, and housewares to 56 individual children and 41 families in need free of charge. How is Earthsol doing? Any new music in the last year or so? Any new tunes/tracks coming out anytime in the near future? EarthSol plays out about once per month these days. Our upcoming gigs are: June 22nd at Blue Agave in Belleville; August 10th at The Shanti; August 30th Alton Amphitheater; TOCO Family Festival September 27 & 28. We are releasing a new CD this summer... it has been due out for a decade. Don’t ask. I gave birth to two children instead of digital CD babies. What can I say; both are exhilarating and enlightening and life changing! How is the relationship between you and your Earthsol bandmates? I love the guys. Everyone of them is a true honest friend. I love writing songs with my brother-in-law Matt. We’ve been doing it for over a decade! We’ve been through allot over the years, and the guys are there no matter what. They are my family. What drives the band? What inspires you? Life drives us and inspires us. All of our songs, or most, are about the evolution of the human condition. Love drives us and inspires us. We sing a lot, or especially I do, about trying to get down to what is most important about being human; loving one another. And legalizing the constitution of course . What events or shows do you have planned? There are a fun 80s pub crawl in Soulard in August and a Halloween in July Belleville Pub Crawl coming
up as TOCO Festival pre-parties. Watch the web: www.toconfp.org; www. tocofestival.org; www.tocoshop.com. It’s been three years now since the TOCO Shop has opened its doors. How do you feel its mission has benefited the community? Are there any changes or expansions in its future? We need a new building. We would also like to see some new board members with fresh ideas. We are growing, but we need the help of the community. We can do this together. We need donations for the shop and the NFP. We need volunteers. We’d like to double the size of our existing programs and double our number of programs in the next three years. YOU can help! How do you feel your teaching and musical connections within the community have helped facilitate or generate for feedback and awareness for the shop? I would not be where I am today without my experiences in music, and in education. I miss teaching. I miss it a lot. Someday all of these experiences of me serving in our community will serve a higher purpose in my future classrooms. I have no doubt that I am not done teaching. But then, I’m not done learning yet either.

Brew, Que and You – First Annual Brew & Que Comes to Belleville by Mark Johnson
Belleville is known for its downtown events: Art on the Square, the Chili Cook-off and Wine, Dine and Jazz, to name a few. Each of these have become staples of the social year for Bellevilleians, a people who seem to love mixing food, drink and art with sectioned-off streets and tents. This year we’ll get to add another event to the list: Belleville Main Street’s Brew & Que BBQ Challenge and Craft Beer Walk, which will kick off on June 8 from 11 am to 9 pm. The brainchild of Big Daddy’s 618 part-owner, Scott Schmelzel, the event combines the two great culinary companions of every good summer, barbecue and beer. The barbecue portion of the event will take place on one block of Belleville’s East Main Street between Church and Charles Streets and the Craft Beer Walk will be located in businesses across the downtown and will run from noon to 4 pm. Non-craft beers will also be available throughout the event. The barbecue will take place throughout the day on the block and, like the Chili Cook-off, includes a challenge which will name a first place winner of the event. Contestants will be able to create anything they like for the competition, be it ribs or pulled pork, but only the tastiest will get the custom-made pig ribbon and bragging rights for the year. Voting works like this: every sale of barbecue includes a ticket to vote, so those that buy six items will get six chances to vote in the competition, those who buy only one get one vote, and so on. Voting will last until 7 pm with the winners being announced at 8 pm. Also, again like the Chili Cook-off, samples from each vendor will be available for a modest $1-2 per sample. Entrée prices will vary as those are set by the contestants, but everyone should be able to try a wide selection of the foods hoping to claim the ribbon. Vendors will range from Mr. BBQ, the Pie Pantry, Shooters Bar to the East Side Volunteer Fire Department; at least nine vendors will be bringing their best to the competition. Variety is the name of the game for the Craft Beer Walk which will bring creations from thirteen breweries like local favorites Schlafly and 4 Hands, as well as others from around the nation like Shiner, Stone, Abita and Founders. The brew walk is fashioned after the Art and Wine Walk in mechanics, which means that when you buy a ticket, you’ll receive a map of each local business that’s offering samples downtown. Beers will be available in 1-3 oz samples, the amount limited by Illinois Law. And one $15 ticket gets you 16 tastings. If food and brews aren’t enough to keep you entertained, there will also be three bands playing during the day and a DJ spinning throughout the event as well. All of the proceeds go to benefit Belleville Main Street, which seeks to revitalize and invigorate Belleville’s downtown through coordination with local businesses, leaders, active community members and the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce. Check out the Brew & Que – napkins and steins will be provided. If you have any questions about the event, you can call 233-2015 or visit www.BellevilleMainStreet.net for more information.
Old Town Market is Back in Season by Mark Johnson
May 4 was the first day of many for 2013’s season of the Old Town Market in Downtown Belleville. Located in the parking lot at the corner of West Main and 1st Street, the market brings vendors from across the county from 7:30 am to noon each Saturday. Vendor’s booths are all filled with handmade, homemade, and homegrown items. The market began after a group of members of the Turkey Hill Grange wanted to bring some of their produce and products to locals in Belleville. The result has been a market that brings some of the highest quality produce from local farmers and gardeners as well as other artisan items like bread, cupcakes, as well as crafts and flowers. Set up in tents across the parking lot, there’s usually a musician strumming away nearby and lots of people milling about, chatting with the vendors and buying the good things before them. Each vendor brings something unique to the market, and most of the produce you’ll find here is organic, natural and from less than 25 miles away. Coming to a market like this and speaking to the person who harvested the tomatoes you’re buying creates a real appreciation for the food and the process behind bringing it to your table. And three of the vendors you’ll find at the market are: Cooley Farms is a specialty crop farm located in Carlyle, Illinois. Cooley Farms produces pecans, asparagus, blackberries, heirloom tomatoes, radishes, and one of their most well-known and unique offerings, brown eggs. Cooley Farms is specifically licensed to sell brown eggs at markets like ours. Their chickens are fed on a wide variety of foods that improve their egg’s nutritional value and flavor over store-bought varieties. Turkey Hill Grange, represented by David Donley, brings a huge assortment of homemade jams, jellies and produce to the market each Saturday. Turkey Hill Grange is a fraternal organization with a specific interest in agriculture. Donley had some apple butter last weekend made in a copper kettle over a wood fire, the original method of making this favorite. They have many varieties of jams and jellies that are made with homegrown fruits. Dale and Pat Black are known for their honey. Dale has raised bees since he was 11 when his dad found a bee swarm on a fence. Dale began more seriously keeping bees after selling his cattle a number of years ago. Now he has forty hives and his bees produce honey from nectars gathered from a wide variety of sources which gives their honey a flavor unique to the region. times got completely lost as I became entranced by the spontaneity of using different patterned decorative papers cut into shapes and placing them within the confines of the printed background, creating a unique and separate world.” To celebrate Jansheski’s “Sicilian Dynasty Part I” run at the gallery, there will be an Artist’s Reception on Thursday, June 6 from 4:00-7:00 pm. Downtown Lebanon shops will be open the evening of June 6 for your shopping pleasure. The McKendree University Gallery of Art is open Fridays and Saturdays from 1:00-4:00pm. The gallery is staffed by volunteers from the university and surrounding community and is free and open to the public. In addition to the artist showcases, the “Gallery: Talk” program is a new speaker and event series hosted at the gallery. These events are also free and open to the public.
There’s a new addition to the Brick Street in Lebanon, Illinois. The McKendree University Gallery of Art opened in November and has been bringing new talent and life to the Lebanon community. McKendree hopes the gallery can be a way to showcase student talent, as well as an opportunity for students to earn hands on experience working in a gallery, interacting with artists and the community, and gaining real world training. It features exhibits by students, faculty, alumni, and artists from across the country. Each month spotlights a new installation or collection with most of the artwork available for sale. From June 5-24, the gallery will feature the work of artist David Jansheski - a visual artist, painter, printmaker, and the occasional educator who has dedicated the last 30 years to his arts career. For him, not pursuing a career in which he was creating something, making something, seeing his ideas become reality or involved in the creative process was not an option. “I feel as though I’ve had little choice. It’s something that I must do for my mental, emotional, and spiritual survival,” Jansheski said. Once he has an idea or a direction for a project, Jansheski explores it within a “series” context. Business Profile
June 2013
Steeped in History by Julia Jensen Nestled in the heart of downtown Lebanon, Illinois, just 25 miles from St. Louis, is a little shop unlike any other. Fezziwig’s Marketplace has been a staple on the brick street for six years and specializes in unique and one-of-akind products. But Fezziwig’s is about much more. It’s an experience. Husband and wife team Tim Moore and Ellen Leaf-Moore dreamed of opening their own small business and thought historic downtown Lebanon would be the ideal spot. Tim had over thirty years of experience in sales, marketing, advertising and purchasing; and Ellen had been a general manager at Williams-Sonoma and at Pottery Barn. In 2007, a British grocery store on St. Louis Street became available, and the couple jumped at the chance to make the dream a reality and opened a gourmet food and wine shop, specializing in everything needed for entertaining, a favorite pastime of both Tim and Ellen. Drawing from Lebanon’s unique past, the name Fezziwig’s was chosen as a tribute to Charles Dickens. Lebanon has the honor of being the only town in Illinois where Dickens stayed overnight. Mr. Fezziwig was Scrooge’s former employer in the Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. A jovial merchant, Fezziwig was the opposite of Scrooge – happy, kind, congenial and good to his employees. Tim and Ellen strive to create an environment that would make Fezziwig proud. One of the most unique aspects of the Fezziwig’s experience is the selection of loose-leaf teas. Leaf-Moore is one of sixty certified tea educators in the United States and one of only a handful to obtain level IV certification from the Specialty Tea Institute. The store carries over one hundred varieties of premium loose-leaf teas that change seasonally and are painstakingly sampled and chosen. Leaf-Moore also shares her love and extensive knowledge through tea education classes held at the store. In Tea 101, students learn about the five types of tea (black, pu-erh, oolong, white and green), the benefits of each particular category, how they are each processed, and how to brew the perfect pot of tea. From there, students can take the “higher level” tea classes, which focus on each variety individually. Leaf-Moore trains her staff diligently to ensure they know exactly which tea will suit the customer’s needs. Tell them a favorite flavor, type of tea or ailment, and they’ll help find the perfect fit. Over the last few years, Fezziwig’s has added a collection of premium grade balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oils. Shipped from Italy, Argentina and California, each variety is bottled in the store. Though they’re best known for the Four Leaf Balsamic, aged 15-18 years from Modena, Italy, the store also carries infused oils and vinegars with flavors like Cinnamon Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, Summer Peach, and Ruby Red Grapefruit balsamics and infused olive oils like Tuscan Herb, Garlic, Hot Chili, Basil, Herbs de Provence, and Lemon. Because the staff uses the olive oils and vinegars in their own homes, they are a great resource for recipes ideas. They even create recipe cards for the oils and vinegars, as well as the gourmet food products and are more than happy to share their tips and tricks. The newly renovated Bottleworks room houses the olive oil and balsamic tasting station where customers are encouraged to sample each the varieties and find a favorite.

June 2013 The Bottleworks is also home to Fezziwig’s wine selection. The Moores strive to maintain a rotating collection of wines that aren’t found in grocery and chain stores. Their concise yet impressive range consists of Cabernet and Merlot, bold Zinfandel, fruity red blends, crisp Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and sweet wines in red or white from vineyards all over the world. Wine tastings are a common event at Fezziwig’s. Usually on Saturdays, customers can enjoy a complimentary tasting while they peruse the store. Evening wine tastings make a great friends’ night out or date night. The event includes a wider selection of wines to taste presented by one or more of the store’s wine reps as well as hors d’oeuvres and sometimes live music. Reservations are required for most events. The gourmet foods selection at Fezziwig’s is fit for anyone, from a seasoned gourmet to a culinary novice. Featuring products from Stonewall Kitchen, Robert Rothschild Farms, Savannah Bee Co., Low Country Produce and many others, Fezziwig’s has something for every taste. And the staff has plenty of ideas on how to use each product! Recipe cards for gourmet foods are also readily available to take the guesswork out of how to use unusual and unique food finds like Fischer & Wieser’s Smokehouse Bacon Chipotle Grill Sauce or Cumin-Cinnamon Seasoned Salt from Sabrosa Salt Co. Fezziwig’s also carries coffee from Goshen Market located in Edwardsville, Illinois. The team strives to make gourmet eating and entertaining as easy and approachable as possible. The serving pieces and dishware are evidence of that, too. Each season, they debut new collections of stunning plates, platters, tea sets, tablecloths and wreaths. For summer, the focus is on backyard barbecues with melamine plates and platters that are not only fun but also functional for outdoor grilling and summer fiestas around a gorgeous table set with festive plates and tablecloths. Leaf-Moore also hosts decorating classes every few months to help customers create beautiful arrangements and tabletops at home. Lebanon may be a small, historic town in Illinois, but there’s nothing small about shops like Fezziwig’s. Customers can feel the passion and attention to each detail throughout the store. From product knowledge and recipe creation to educational classes and special events, Tim and Ellen, as well as their staff, make every effort to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience by continuing to be purveyors of fine tastes.

Sarah’s Jewelry Box by Daniel Nygard
As I sat down at the table, I looked across at a wide variety of jewelry. Handmade bracelets and necklaces exploding with reds, blues, purples and other bright colors that made the pieces stand out. This was a first glance of Sara’s Jewelry Box. One piece stands out to me. It’s a set; a necklace, bracelet, and earrings. This particular set was made with crystal, metallic, and black pieces, giving it an edge and glowing effect. A much thought through and carefully put together sample of Sarah’s skill and attention to detail.
When it comes to handmade jewelry, Sarah Wolery is the real deal. “It started out as a hobby, then it quickly turned into a passion,” Sarah says to me during our interview. I can tell just by the way that she carefully and neatly arranged the display of her work for me on the table that she cared about every single piece. “I put everything I have into my work; everything I design has a little piece of me in it”. It’s a very personal process and helps Sarah to be able to help others. Just like everyone else, Sarah has been through some rough patches in life, some really rough. Sarah found making Jewelry as a healthy and effective outlet. She was able to use making jewelry as a way to keep her busy and be productive with her time in a positive way. Sarah holds a God given talent
for attention to detail that, mixed with her creativeness, results in a pretty potent product that truly is more than meets the eye. Although what meets the eye is a sparkling and eye catching array of fascinating talent-filled jewelry. Sarah’s Jewelry Box consists of many hand-picked materials such as glass, hematite, Swarovski crystal, and even pearl. All of these combined carefully to make such priceless trinkets like bracelets, necklaces, anklets, and even Red Hat watches. It even gets more impressive with such items as awareness bands, charms, and personalized pieces. Sarah has displayed her Jewelry Box at many craft shows, fairs, Farmers and Flea Markets in the area. Sarah has created a Facebook page to honor all of the hard work and dedication to her art. Sarah’s Jewelry Box has many viewers and followers keeping up with what she has ingeniously created next, including where and when to catch her at the next show. Sarah has also been known to throw jewelry parties to display her work which gives people a more comfortable and laid back opportunity to check out what she has to offer. These are no pressure events typically filled with invited friends and friends of friends; “Even if you don’t want to buy something, bring someone who might”. Sometimes Sarah offers a referral discount at these parties to help as an incentive to either buy or bring more people who would. Above anything else, Sarah has found that her niche, at least for now, is making personalized pieces. A lot of people come to her and request personalized pieces for gifts, like anniversaries or birthdays, and even sports teams. Anything you request, Sarah will be willing to work with you on. Sarah proclaims that right now her demographic is females, 18-30, for which she has a seemingly endless spectrum of possibilities. She wants to eventually get into making a wider variety of products to broaden her customer and fan base. For example, she plans to start producing leather and hemp braided jewelry like bracelets. The sky is the limit for Sarah’s Jewelry Box. There are big things to come for this young entrepreneur and her very impressive work. Even though she has put forth a huge amount of effort into what she has created so far, Sarah has even more jewels to reveal in the future. Find Sarah’s Jewelry Box on Facebook or call 618-207-7684.

June 2013 I refer to my art as “New Classic Pop Art” and I shoot for a fun, nostalgic feel in every piece I make. My mother, grandfather and sister Lori were all artists and have always been an inspiration to me. I still have my grandfather’s oils and chalks, my mother’s pastels and art supplies, and I use a little of them in every piece.

My works are one of a kind. I do my own research and secure the permissions or licenses as needed for the works I draw from. I design each piece, use computer adjustments or modifications where desired, cut puzzle sections, paint, ink, mat and frame the art. My goal is to create interesting and enjoyable art that makes people smile. KMPickardart.com

Justin C. Fash
Megan is a sophomore at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She is majoring in English and Political Science with a minor in Creative Writing and Women’s Studies. Her hometown is Tamaroa, a small town south of Mt. Vernon and north of Carbondale. “Lace”
My line of work is inspired from a steampunk drawing style. I was inspired by a Japanese animation called “steamboy.” I am hoping one day to become a tattoo artist and open a parlor in San Francisco. I love the look of machinery and my artwork has a meaning to it. It represents that people can be cold on the inside (hence the machine body) but when given the proper care and love they can blossom with life. (hence the fact every piece has a head or a skull or some type of biological head.) I am very intrigued by biomechanics as well. I love human anatomy. Slipping on my gray sweater then readjusting the collar of the shirt under it I glanced in the mirror one last time. My glasses and bald spot shined back at me. Then with a sigh I called, “Carla!” “Yes dad! I’m ready!” She yelled back, probably in her bedroom still. I stepped out of my bedroom then knocked on her white bedroom door. I looked at the pink flower stickers that had been there since we moved. Not much had physically changed sine we’d lost Tracy. “Carla!” I called once again. “Okay,” She said then she pushed her door open and stepped out. She’d straightened her brown hair and put on a really lacy shirt I didn’t even know about. “Why are you so dressed up?” I asked following her down our gray hallway. She stepped over Gary, our sleeping and massive dog, then said, “Oh no reason.” I opened our front door for her to go out of then I cleared my throat, “Is there, ummm, someone who you like?” With both of us out in the somewhat chilly for a day in June I closed and secured the door of our two-story white picket fence type house. “No, dad.” She said nibbling on the tip of her sparkly pink fingernail. “Okay well I’m sorry.” I said looking down at my keys as I started towards the garage. “I’m not as good at these things as your mom was.” She sighed, “why do you always do that?” Sniffing I shrugged, “do what?” “Make me feel guilty so I tell you what was on my mind anyway.” I smiled and opened the garage door for her, “I’m glad you think that. So please tell me that I’m wrong.” She smiled now too and went for the passenger’s side of my Silver Prius. “Sorry dad, yes I am trying to impress someone.” I went to the driver’s side not sure how to react. So I just sighed.
