Bringing Generations Together: Four & Twenty rollin’ into Belleville by Robyn L. Kirsch The third annual acoustic Four & Twenty concert hosted by Belleville’s Crehan’s Irish Bar is fast approaching folks! Come to the West End of Belleville to see what you’ve been missing--a true musical gem of the local music circuit. The rhythms and harmonies of the versatilely inclined musicians never fail to amaze and leave people feeling a buzz of awe that clings to the minds and hearts of listeners, said friend and fan of the band, Jim Viviano of Belleville. “They play so effortlessly with a finesse that encourages even new

listeners to not peel away from the music--it’s not even just about listening to some good live music, it’s truly an EXPERIENCE that everyone should have under their belt,” Viviano raved. When watching the group play, eyes closed and energy flowing, it’s as though the music is a clear extension of the band’s soul, and onlookers gasp and coo, hanging onto every note while the band takes them to the very edge. Through observation, one can see that it’s almost as though the band creates a musical sphere that pulls people in while all else falls to the wayside. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young left it’s footprint on the landscape of American music, and Four & Twenty tribute band takes that impression a step farther. With world class musicians who’ve played all over the Midwest, nationally and internationally, this band is a must see--for young and old. 4

According to Mondin, of Alton, people love the tight harmonies, the musicianship and the intricate musical arrangements. “The music of CSNY allows for people who like different types of music to enjoy. There’s some for those who like folk, or jazz, or rock. It really crosses over a vast majority of age groups and genres actually. I think one of the large draws is to see how many guitars Scott can fit on stage,” Mondin says as he chuckles. Belleville resident and longtime fan of the musicians, Jacque Davis said not only are they a professional bunch, but also humble with a level of pedigree that is phenomenal. “I think they’re the best guitar players we have in this area. I love that they

July 2013 as much of the music as he can in the present, as the bands are often playing metro east venues, larger scale and more intimate. “They’re like a treasure that seems to be slipping away--I hope I’m wrong, but I still feel like it’s imperative we get the word out about these guys,” Viviano said. Four & Twenty will be also playing the Family Arena in early winter in 2013, making it their fourth year with more to come. “The family arena show has grown to be a tradition for myself and friends, we’ve gone every year and we get a hotel room and make a night of it,” Davis said. We let it flow and it’s really taken on a life of it’s own,” Mondin said. The upcoming Belleville show will be at Crehan’s Irish Pub at 5500 North Belt West, produced by Jim Viviano and media-sponsored by Straight Up Magazine. Doors open at 2 pm on July 21st for the 4 pm show. Tickets may be available at the door. Advanced purchase is recommended. Expect this to be a sell-out event.

Terry Henke and her husband Steve, of Florissant, Mo., have been going to two or three shows a month on average for the last eight years, no matter where the venue may be -- traveling near and far to see this eccentric and down-to-earth group of guys play is rewarding and worth it, Terry explained. “They are just so nice and humble and it really shows in their playing that they love what they’re doing. I love the genre of music they play because, not only is it awesome, but it brings back so many memories of what I grew up with,” Terry said. “When I look out in the crowd, I seriously see people in their twenties ranging all the way up to their seventies--a well diverse audience... it’s just fantastic,” Mondin said. “I’m speechless when I hear stories from people who hear us play...I find it fascinating that we’re able to bring generations together.” Mondin recalls a story from one fan who brought her daughter who was in her early twenties to a show and she quickly turned from being apprehensive to watch them play to loving it. It would be hard not to notice the amazing impact the moist spring has had on the natural world around us. The drastic difference from the ample rain and longer duration of the cooler temperatures has been wonderful to the native trees and wild flowers when compared to the last year’s slow growth from a much drier late spring. In every garden and landscape, annuals, vegetables and perennials are exploding with green, lush growth. Worth taking note of, however, is that if these plants are all doing so well, so are a few plants most people would do better to avoid contact with such as poison ivy and stinging nettles. Colonies of nettles are growing fast and quite thick, under the canopy of local woodlands and parks. They are achieving maturity and also a stronger sting at an earlier point this season than last year. Poison ivy vines are also vigorously spreading and climbing in the spaces between buildings and trees alike. These potentially irritating plants are distributed virtually everywhere by many species of birds who eat their berries which are toxic to mammals. This year, the Metro East’s climate has been the perfect conditions for all plant species which in turn has supported local fauna populations, such as deer, ground hogs, raccoons, rabbits, opossums and coyotes. With healthier animals, the parasites that rely on them as hosts have been thriving as well. Populations of ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes are much higher this spring than the last and will continue to be so during the hot summer months to come. Despite these increased hazards of traveling out into fields or wooded areas, the brilliant display of vitality and energy at work is more than worth the effort to protect yourself. Chemical controls in bug repellants, such as DEET, can protect you from these parasites. However, recent research has shown that they may cause damage to parts of the central nervous system involved with muscle control and the sense of smell after long time exposure and continuous use. There are many herbs that can be grown in a home garden that repel these pests without ill affect to you or your pets’ health. These herbs, as essential plant oils, can be infused into plant-based Castile soaps, such as Dr. Bronner’s, and used to wash clothing, hair, and skin to prevent exposure before adventuring to the woods. Also, this protection can be obtained by suspending the raw or dry materials of these species in pure plant-based oils. Coconut oil is a particularly good choice because, by itself, it is already healthful for the skin and hair, providing some protection from the sun’s UV rays while simultaneously moisturizing and allowing it to breathe. Herbs in the mint family, especially basil, lemon balm, StraightUpMagazine.net
and catnip, give off a scent that discourages pests such as ticks and mosquitoes from biting. Rosemary is particularly effective against ticks. These plants, along with scented geraniums and citronella, can be planted in landscapes and containers in places where people congregate such as porches, around pools and patios which can reduce the impact of pest presence. The frequent food use of basil, rosemary, lemon balm, apple cider vinegar and alliums, such as onions and garlic, help build up the body’s defenses to these pests without even having to apply anything to the skin. For added protection, coconut oil can be infused with a combination of the following fresh picked herbs: rosemary, garlic, basil, catnip, lemon balm, citronella and geraniums. To make this outdoor protection, simply combine the herbs with liquid coconut oil in a glass jar and allow them to sit at room temperature for at least a couple days to pull the herbs’ oils out into the coconut oil. Allowed to sit longer, a few weeks or more, the potency of the oil increases, providing more effective protection. After being bitten by chiggers, ticks or mosquitoes, the wounds can be uncomfortable, itchy or even painful. To reduce the impact, the leaves from a wild species of violets and plantains found all over our area in fields and lawns can be crushed and applied directly to the location affected. Both plants have astringent properties which help dry up the bites and contain compounds that act as a disinfectant. Calendulas, or pot marigolds, are common plants in gardens and the leaves and flowers are also used to alleviate these symptoms. These plants can also be applied effectively to bee and wasp stings and spider bites to reduce irritation and swelling. As for protection from exposure to poison ivy and stinging nettles, jewelweed - a native flowering herb - is quite useful to heal the skin that came in contact. The plants can be found in low lying wet areas and on the edge of woodlands, and can be recognized by the yellow or orange flowers and glossy stems. The fluid inside the main stalk of the blooming jewelweed can be applied to the skin directly and soothes the irritating symptoms such as burning, itching, redness and blistering. Our perception of the grandeur of the natural world shouldn’t be limited by a few insect and plant pests. Armed with the proper remedies and knowledge of beneficial plants, the wilderness can be inviting and rewarding to explore, bringing peace to your soul, smiles and good memories to this summer, not just irritation and discomfort. Go out and explore the beauty of our Metro East parks and nature preserves for yourself this season! Str8Up Magazine

Jake Bishop Southwestern Illinois College student Jake Bishop of Glen Carbon recently received the Kiwanis Club Award for his oil-on-canvas piece, “Splash,” at the 2013 SWIC Student Art Show held annually at the Schmidt Art Center. “This 4’-by-5’ piece is the first in a series I’m working on,” said Bishop. “I wanted to take the human face and abstract it in such a way that will draw attention from a distance if necessary. The bold colors ‘splashed’ across the canvas allow the face to ‘emerge’ from within the chaos.’” Although Bishop has shown a true talent for the use of vivid colors in his work, he faces a unique obstacle as an artist. He is colorblind and cannot see variations or shades in color. “I don’t let being colorblind slow me down,” he said. “I try to use color in a way that draws the viewers’ attention and allows them to have an emotional connection to my work.” The 23-year-old is currently studying for his Associate in Fine Arts degree at SWIC. He plans to complete a bachelor’s degree, and would love to eventually work full time creating art. For more information about Bishop and his art visit Bishop-Arts.com.
