August 2013
On the Diamond: Midwest Salute to the Arts by Mark Johnson Under great white tents, a crowd has gathered on an August afternoon on a park’s baseball field. Families stop to speak with artists and fans hum a breeze through the shade. In another part of the park, children are painting together, and an artist walks over and join them for a while. That night a band plays. Eventually, the people go home. And at the end of the weekend, the tents come down.
For twenty-five years, that scene has made an annual visitation to Everett Moody Park during the Midwest Salute to the Arts. This year, it will return on August 23-25, and with it will come the same fun, relaxation and culture that Fairview Heights has enjoyed for those two and a half decades. Above all other things, the Midwest Salute to the Arts is, of course, an art show. Gathering one hundred artists who create art in eleven mediums, the juried competition gives awards in four categories: Art Council Choice Award, Best in Show, Best of Category, and Award of Excellence. Artists from all over the nation come to compete and we get to come buy it and talk with them about how they do what they do. At a quarter of a century, the show is the oldest art fair in the area, the concept being brought to Fairview by Gene Ellerbusch after visiting an art show in Mystic, Connecticut. The first committee was originally led by Mrs. Billy McLemore, and together they produced the first show in 1988 on October 1st and 2nd. One of the most noticeable features of this show is the absence of individual tents for each artist. Instead, as you can see on the event’s logo, the show makes good use of much larger tents that keep everyone out of the sun, artists and guests alike. And with that comes a sense of inclusiveness which makes it all the easier to talk to anyone you wish. The result is an art show that doesn’t just feature artists but fully integrates them into the experience. 4
Str8Up Magazine
That experience has something to offer everyone in the family, from children to adults, from art lovers to people who love a good weekend. The Salute features a bevy of foods, all of which is sold by non-profit groups who get to keep all of the proceeds they raise from the event. Kids have the option of many different make-and-take arts in the Creation Station, as well as the opportunity to pick out their favorite piece of art in the Children’s Gallery. The parent-free experience is designed to foster an appreciation for art, and for $5, they get to go in with a volunteer and bring something home with them. The Salute has many activities for children. This is the organizing committee’s acknowledgement that art programs in many schools are going by the wayside, leaving it to parents and the community to find ways to nurture this important aspect of culture in our youth. Salute Director Sharon Kassing herself volunteered in the children’s area for years before switching to her current role. Volunteering at the Salute can be infectious – many volunteers have been a part of the event for years, and many families, such as Kassing’s own, find themselves becoming involved. For an event that has spanned so many years, some annual attendees have grown up coming to the event. In a way, one of the musical performers for this year’s Salute has done exactly that as well. Friday night, from 7-9 pm, the Salute will welcome back local performer, Erin Bode, who performed at the Salute years ago before she had achieved her current fame.

“The Erin Bode Group creates music forged from the Americana of its members’ midwestern roots, infused with jazz grooves and made magic by Bode’s bell-like voice. Sophisticated arrangements and attention to phrasing, both vocal and instrumental, further distinguish the band’s fresh sound.” (ErinBode.com)
Saturday will follow Bode with local blues diva Kim Massie, another vocalist known for wowing audiences. “Kim Massie is one of the most recognizable vocalists in the Midwest. Her ability to sing not only the blues but rock, pop, country, gospel and R&B has earned her two Best Female Vocalist of the Year Awards from the Riverfront Times as well as a Grand Center Visionary Award in 2005.” (KimMassie.com) Sunday will close with Krysl & Sconce, an acoustic duo whose original arrangements of popular songs put them in a wonderfully grey genre of a cover-but-not-quite band. “An evening with Krysl & Sconce is not the same ole, same ole you might expect from an acoustic duo. It is an evening filled with an eclectic mix of classic rock, pop & blues covers, original tunes by Mike, and upbeat conversation.” (KryslandSconce.com) Since the Salute has no admission fees and free parking, it is entirely run by volunteers. Kassing herself spent nearly twenty hours a week this year planning. For such a long-running event, you can be assured that organizers receive much support from the city of Fairview Heights. “The old adage that it takes a whole village – in this case, it’s true,”
she said. “We would never be able to do this each year without such great support from the city, the parks department and our city council.” But Kassing and the volunteers don’t really consider volunteering to be work. “It’s a part of my life, and we all do it because we love it so much,” she said. That love is certainly something Kassing and the thousands of at-
tendees over the decades share, and this August, if you haven’t already, maybe it’s time you discover why.

Leaving His Mark – A Public Display of Creativity by Julia Jensen Historic Lebanon is getting a bit of a makeover. Freelance illustrator, artist, and Lebanon native Jacob Eveland is paying tribute to his hometown with a new mural on the side of Ahner Florists located at 120 West St. Louis Street. The Virginia Commonwealth University senior returned to Lebanon after being contacted with the opportunity. With a semester left, Eveland thought it would be the perfect chance to return to the town that has inspired so much of his work. Growing up in his grandparents’ antique shop, Grandma’s Attic, Eveland was surrounded by the past: oil lamps, phonographs, and mementos from another time. This influence is evident in the mural, which combines Lebanon’s landmarks, history, and native flora and fauna. When Lebanon was founded, the cedar tree was chosen to represent the new town. The Bothwell Chapel on McKendree University’s campus has become synonymous with Lebanon. The cardinals in flight, red fox, and morning glories are all indigenous to the area. Emerald Mound, which was established by Native Americans just east of Lebanon before the town existed, is symbolized by the arched mounds at the top of the piece. The deer drinking at the lake stands for Lebanon’s Horner Park on the north side of town. Eveland has loved creating for as long as he can remember, turning to art as an escape from reality. He loves art because it feeds a drive that doesn’t stop. “My style is more ornamental. I want to keep the eye moving, like a collage. I try to keep interest and please all – young and old,” Eveland said of his latest project. Attending VCU was a dream come true. Of the thousands of applicants, 1500 are waitlisted. Only 200 get in. The response and support he’s received over his college career from professors and peers means the most to Eveland. He’s already shown work in New York City as one of only 200 artists chosen for the show. His dream is to have his work in the Arcadia Gallery in NYC or a solo show in California’s Thinkspace Gallery. Eveland has also been writing and illustrating a book, which he hopes to someday get published. Talking to Eveland, you can feel his passion for his work. As he flipped through photos of his pieces on his phone, he enthusiastically explained the meaning of each detail. Eveland seamlessly combines objects, each with their own meaning and story, into something larger. Like pieces of a puzzle, it builds to create the whole story. 6
Str8Up Magazine
Eveland wanted to do the mural for the community and to give new life to the town, helping it move forward. He hopes it opens up the area and sheds light on the community that inspired so much of his work. “It would be awesome if this can bring more art and murals to town.” Eveland can also use the mural as a permanent billboard for his talent. When asked for the best piece of advice he’s received, Eveland’s answer was beautifully simple. “You know what’s right for you. Be selfish and stick to it because you’re the one who knows and is trained for this. Be happy.” “A mural is a painting done directly on the wall. It comes from the Latin word murus, which means wall. Murals often show the concerns, hopes, values and memories of the community where the murals are painted. Murals are not like other paintings. They have a different purpose, a different kind of effect on the lives of those who see them. They are public art in the best sense, because they are actually created in public, with the community looking on. Good public art says something about the community. It says, this is who we are or, this is what we think, this is where we came from, this is what we want. And it says these things in a way that everybody can understand and enjoy.” From www. demoliart.com To see more of Eveland’s work, visit www.JacobEveland.com or www.evelandsart. tumblr.com. August 2013
Keeping Generations Together by Robyn L. Kirsch The Third Annual Acoustic Four & Twenty Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute concert hosted by Belleville’s Cehans’s Irish Bar was a roaring success. With the venue packed like a can of sardines, happily full to the brim, the band kept the crowd on the edge of their seat. I love these guys! I live in another state, but when I am in town, I track down where they’ll be playing so I can get my fill,” said Kathie Gluck, loyal fan of 12 years. According to Jim Viviano, producer for the show, the annual concert was sold out three weeks prior to the event with about 160 tickets sold. The show began at 4pm, Sunday, July 21 with a standing ovation from the crowd. One audience member, Scotty Sutton, said he showed up an hour or two beforehand in order to ensure he would have prime seating, but much to his dismay most seats were taken despite his early bird arrival. “The band did a great job, as Photo by Mark Polege always—I wasn’t even bothered by the fact that I stood at the bar the whole time—the music was worth it,” Sutton said. Amongst the crowd was talk of fond memories of growing up listening to the music of CSNY, and to hear it again performed by world class musicians such as the Four & Twenty CSNY tribute band brought chills and smiles to many. CSNY left its footprint on the landscape of American music, and the Four & Twenty tribute band takes that impression a step farther. According to member John Mondin of Alton, people love the tight harmo-
nies, the musicianship and the intricate musical arrangements. “The music of CSNY allows for people who like different types of music to enjoy. There’s some for those who like folk, or jazz, or rock. It really crosses over a vast majority of age groups and genres actually,” Mondin said. Terry Jones Rogers and Scott Nienhaus, of Rogers & Nienhaus, along with percussionist, drummer and vocalist Tim Politte, Bob Werner and Mondin of the Mondin Band, put on a stellar show said one local Bellevillian Gail Reinhimer. “The way they harmonize and rock those instruments is just awesome, to say the least,” Gail said. “My husband and I were very excited to see the annual show.” Gail’s husband Jim concurred wholeheartedly, he said. “I wouldn’t have changed a thing—and when the crowd was hollering for an encore, and they did it was just a perfect way to end the night.” The Third Annual Acoustic Four & Twenty concert was sponsored, in part, by Straight Up Magazine. The next Four & Twenty show is 7:30pm, Friday, August 2 at the Peoria Riverfront CEFCU Center Stage at 200 NE Water Street, a.k.a. Peoria’s Landing. The band will also be playing the St. Charles Family Arena in early winter of 2013, making it their fourth year with more to come. My passion and inspiration exceed the limits of my pen and paper as I have dedicated my time to teaching others about art. After submerging myself for years in art history, techniques and methods I obtained my Bachelors in Art Education from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO. I have taught art camps both locally in O’Fallon, IL and in the St. Louis area. Seeing my students have fun while learning about art and creating their own masterpieces only further inspires my own work.
Dabbling in the art world since the age of five I have yet to find a medium I do not enjoy. While my main staples are graphite, charcoal and pastel drawings, I have found a creative outlet in some of the lesser known fields such as Chinese brush painting, basketry and sculpture, as well as photography. I like to use my experience to compose mixed media works; creating an overall reflective and intriguing piece of art.

If I could just paint with acrylics all day, I would. But there’s something about photography that is most inspiring, the ultimate way to show the world how I see things”. Daniel Nygard Collinsville
