The Arts
February 2014
McKendree Presents: The Hett Experience by Julia Jenson Exciting things are happening at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. With a broad variety of performances, the second half of the 2013-2014 season is sure to offer something to everyone. Director Peter Palermo has been with The Hett since day one in 2006. When planning each season’s schedule, Palermo looks for events to represent all disciplines of art. What began 8 years ago has grown to encompass a wide range of topics and events. With the Film Art Series, Met at The Hett, Distinguished Speakers series, live professional performances and student performances, The Hett offers over 120 programs each year. “We like to offer a diversity of content to give people in the area the widest possible array; to challenge them to think and explore different methods,” Palermo said. The 2014 schedule has no shortage of variety, which Palermo says “is the fuel for a creative spirit.” The Distinguished Speaker Series aims to bring in individuals whose lives and stories will have a cultural impact on the community and students. These events are free to the public. Temple Grandin, whose incredible story has been explored in film, television, and print, was diagnosed with autism in 1950, a time when little to no achievement was expected for those on the autism spectrum. Dr. Grandin has accomplished more in her lifetime than most. A prominent author, advocate, and speaker, she used her skills to revolutionize livestock-handling equipment as well as become a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Dr. Grandin speaks worldwide on both autism and cattle handling. Though her visit on February 28 is already sold out, The Hett is also showing the critically acclaimed 2010 biopic “Temple Grandin” starring Claire Danes on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00pm free of charge. The Hettenhausen Center offers musical acts to suit a plethora of tastes. Jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli has been playing since he was 6 years old. Brought up in the jazz community, Pizzarelli has performed with some of music’s best acts like Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, Natalie Cole, and Rosemary Clooney, just 4

to name a few. “He’s got great stage presence, a charming voice, and great guitar licks. He’s the total package,” Palermo said. Drawing from the likes of Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin, and Lennon and McCartney, Pizzarelli is quite established with the Great American Songbook. The John Pizzarelli Quartet performs Friday, February 21 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $8 for students and children. Russian classical pianist Valentina Igoshina will perform Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30pm. She has performed throughout the world to critical acclaim. Igoshina has won numerous prizes and awards at international competitions. General admission is $5. The Hett will also feature smaller chamber ensembles from the St. Louis Symphony on Monday, March 31 at 7:30pm. Admission is free. The St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra is also a big draw for The Hett. “They play as well as some mid-size cities’ pros,” said Palermo. “It’s a treat to hear that big of an orchestra in such an intimate setting.” The Youth Orchestra will perform Sunday, May 4 at 3:00pm. Admission for that performance is free. The Met at The Hett series is a continually popular event. Audience members are treated to high-definition simulcasts from the New York Metropolitan Opera. Opera stars host the series, which includes interviews and behindthe-scene features from each performance. The 2014 schedule includes “Rusalka” (Saturday, February 8, 12:00pm), “Prince Igor” (Sunday, March 2, 1:00pm), “Werther” (Saturday, March 15, 12:00pm), “La Bohéme” (Saturday, April 5, 12:00pm), “Cosi Fan Tutte” (Saturday, April 16, 12:00pm), and “La Cenerentola” (Sunday, May 11, 1:00pm). Seating is general admission. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children and student. “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo” is a whole-family experience unlike any other. Erth Visual & Physical Inc. invites audience members on an incredible journey to prehistoric Australia with giant puppets, stilt-walkers, aerial creatures, and inflatables. Children can feed, water, and care for

the dinosaurs brought to life at the “Dinosaur Zoo.” Using sophisticated technology and design, the company collaborates with paleontologists and current scientific interpretations of fossil records. The result is an experiential theater that engages children’s imaginations while connecting them with the science of paleontology. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Due to the popularity of this event, a second show has been added Saturday, March 8 at 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $5 for students and children. “The Intergalactic Nemesis” is a live-action graphic novel, combining science fiction, comic books, and the pulp serials of the 1930s. Performed like the radio dramas of old, this sci-fi adventure features three live actors, one Foley artist responsible for hundreds of sound effects, a keyboardist, and over 1,000 hand drawn color comic book images projected on a huge screen. The story follows reporter Molly Sloan, her intrepid assistant Timmy, and a mysterious librarian named Ben Wilcott as they prepare for the impending invasion of sludge monsters from the planet Zygon. An illustrated story dramatized live, “The Intergalactic Nemesis” makes for a fun, family-friendly night out. The performance is Thursday, April 3 at 7:30pm, and tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $5 for students and kids. The Film Art Series events are free and open to the public. This year’s series explores two themes: “Vengeance is Mine” and “Standard Deviation: Diversity in Film”. Informal discussions follow each screening. The newest addition to the schedule is critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated “12 Years a Slave”, the harrowing true story of Solomon Northup. The film will be shown Sunday, February 23 at 2pm and 7pm. Upcoming films include: “Temple Grandin” (Wednesday, February 12), “The Crying Game” (Tuesday, March 4), “Titus” (Thursday, March 20), and “Manon of the Spring” (Wednesday, April 16). All films are free. Polermo says that the best part of his job is working with McKendree students and having a positive effect on their lives. “Art is beneficial for young people. They become more empathetic when they walk in the artist’s shoes. It creates a more civil society.” The Hett is Southern Illinois’ premier perJohn Pizzarelli forming arts venue, presenting world class dance, StraightUpMagazine.net
drama, classical music and jazz. The 488-seat auditorium is located on the McKendree University campus in Lebanon, Illinois, 25 miles east of St. Louis. Opened in 2006, The Hett is named for Russel E. and Fern M. Hettenhausen of Belleville, IL. Mrs. and Mrs. Hettenhausen shared a lifelong love for the arts. Following the death of Russel, Fern sought out a way to memorialize him in a fitting manner. She stepped forward with the lead gift of six million dollars and jump-started the effort to construct a new arts center on McKendree University’s beautiful campus. Her gift is a lasting tribute to her husband and her commitment to the arts and young people who study here. At the time of this printing, tickets are still available for most of the events. For a complete schedule and more details about each performance, visit The Hett’s website at McKendree.edu/the_hett.

I don’t worry about what time it is while I’m working because it’s not like work for me - it’s real-time with people I’ve grown to care about and everyday, more come through the door, and I feel as though my life is rich,” Raghda said with a calmness in her voice and a stern expression on her face - there was only truth in her words, that I knew for sure. As one long-time client described Renaissance, “(It’s an) oasis and a profoundly nurturing space (full of) vibrant kindness.” But the “oasis” doesn’t stop with Raghda - there’s the second level to explore too, full of the scent of lavender oils, calm music and inviting walls. Raghda has Douglas Hill, an Illinois and Missouri certified massage therapist, working on the second level of Renaissance. Hill is retired, but wanted to reach out and help others with the extra time on his hands, literally. “It’s great. I come in and I help provide a relaxing, but yet stimulating environment for our clients,” Hill said. “This gives me a chance to give back to the community. Raghda continued, “I have a lot of clients, but am willing to take new clients. It doesn’t matter what you do, because I treat all my clients

the same - with respect and love. I celebrate life. I don’t think there’s any harm in being happy and sharing it with the new and the old in my life. How lucky I was to have been able to touch so many people’s lives, as they have mine. My mother once said to me many years ago, as she watched my clients with me, ‘these aren’t clients, they are family.’” Asked about any other caIL. & MO. Certified Massage reer highlights, Raghda had two key Therapist Douglas Hill experiences to share: “About 15 years ago, I was visiting Ramallah in Jerusalem and came in contact with the FAROUK Systems. Back then, this Egyptian company was well known in Middle-Eastern and European countries; they were not yet known in the United States. They approached me to help them market in the U.S., especially their CHI products, which are hair irons and other tools. Now those products are top of the line here in this country - but back then, that was new territory. I remember coming home to my husband Mike (he sometimes likes to go by ‘Mr. Raghda’) and told him about this exciting opportunity. It would mean travelling internationally on the weekends, and that I would still run the shop, and what did he think? He said, ‘Whatever you want to do, Raghda, whatever makes you happy.’ He is incredibly supportive. I still was raising the youngest of my three sons, and family is just so important to me. So I turned them down - and I have no regrets. There is nothing in life more valuable to me than my family. My family is my joy.” Another opportunity came a few years later. “I had been to training in Las Vegas, at Caesar’s Palace, and in Los Angeles - which was so exciting! Soon after that, I went to a training show in Paducah, Kentucky - featuring RUSK products and technology. Owner Irving Rusk came up to me and said, ‘I know your work - from LA and Vegas shows.’ He asked me to come to be a part of his team, to join with his international artists, to train and present with them. He introduced me to one of his assistants, who told me later, ‘I’ve been working with him for many years now and I have never seen him approach anyone to be on his team.’ I was truly honored. And, as with FAROUK, I told him that my family comes first - they are my joy. And.... here I am! Renaissance in Belleville, Illinois. And I still love it!” “I’ve been doing this for over 37 years and have learned so much about hair, about people, about the human condition, love, pain, family - so much,” Raghda said. “No one has guarantees in life; it is what you make of it. Life changes and change is one thing you can count on. So, I live it, and everyday I try to change people’s lives...they usually end up changing mine too.”

Dinner and a Movie—at the Same Time! The Edge Bistro Theaters by Dan Cross “We always wanted to open a theater; that was always our goal all along,” says Mary Dahm-Schell, co-owner of the amazing entertainment complex which includes D.S. Vespers Sports Pub and Eatery, two large rooms full of arcade games, and Laser Rock (the world’s largest laser tag facility), a 14,000 square foot wonderland of day-glo blacklight forests and mazes three stories tall. “Showing movies is probably the least profitable
they began running D.S. Vespers (then located on West Main Street in Belleville). After learning that St. Louis was one of the largest metropolitan areas without a laser tag venue, they sensed a business opportunity and decided to fill the void. That led them to relocate to their current building at 701 South Belt West (the former site of Russell’s Grocery) back in 1998. Laser Rock soon became the largest such venue in the world, accommodating up to sixty players at a time. The décor alone is worth the price of admission. It looks like a place straight out of J. R. R. Tolkien, with trippy
part of our business,” adds Keith Schell, Mary’s husband and partner. “But it’s something we always wanted to do.” The results of this dream (and lots of research and hard work) are the new Edge 5 Theaters which opened last year in a brand new addition to the sprawling fun spot. The Schells first got into the bar/restaurant business in 1995 when
day-glo airbrush murals, trees with faces, secret passageways, and towers. Keith and Mary did much of the construction themselves, with the help of volunteers. Keith explained, “We had a friend who worked restoring religious icons; he came in and helped us design and build a lot of what we have. He didn’t ask for money—he just wanted to help. We did give him free laser tag.” After 15 years of success operating Laser Rock and Vespers, Keith and Mary took the plunge and launched a big expansion of the space and the business, adding movies to their entertainment Mecca. All five theaters were constructed with state-of-the-art digital technology. “We use Christie projectors, the brightest digital projectors there are,” Keith explained. The

screens are slightly curved, making for optimal viewing from every seat in the theater. Top it off with Dolby Digital surround sound and the overall experience for the viewer is exhilarating, the kind of whole-body immersion you can only get when you see movies on the big screen. But the joy does not end there. Taking in a movie at The Edge 5 is like flying first class. The seats are large, cushy, and incredibly comfortable, and the rows of seats are spaced far enough apart so every patron enjoys luxurious legroom and no one has to stand up if someone needs to get up for more popcorn. But if you want more than popcorn with your movie, check out the two Movie Bistro theaters at The Edge 5. Every seat reclines, and each is equipped with a small swinging tray and a call button you can press to summon a server who will bring you your choice of food and beverages from Vespers’ excellent menu. You can choose from salads, appetizers like Hummus or Smoked Gouda Bites, sandwiches and wraps (the Alamo Wrap and the Chipotle Chicken Melt are two of my favorites), and delicious sides like sweet potato fries and homemade onion rings. And finally, the coup de grâce: your choice of beer or wine. The menu lists 18 different draft beers ranging from Stag to more exotic choices like Affligem Noel and Dragon’s Milk, nearly 50 different bottled beers, eight different wines by the glass and another 20 by the bottle. You’d think table service during movies might be distracting, but it is not at all; the aisles are so roomy and the servers are so discreet (“We are all ninjas, stealthy and silent,” my server Kyle explained) that you barely notice when another frosty cold one suddenly appears on your tray. By the time the movie is finished, you have received and paid your tab, and the whole experience is pure smug pleasure.
The Movie Bistro Theaters are quite small, seating fewer than 60 people each (the other three theaters seat two or three times that number) and since they serve alcohol, the Bistro Theaters are limited to people age 21 and up (another big plus, in my book!). The other three theaters are open to people of all ages. Keith and Mary have an impressive knack for thinking up new ways for people to have fun in their place. Besides the eating, drinking, gaming, and laser tagging that go on every day, there are often special events like Super Bowl Sunday in the Movie Bistros, where guests will enjoy table service while they soak in the game (and the commercials) on the largest screen EVER. They have also hosted local film and video events and hope to do more in the future. The Edge 5/D.S. Vespers/Laser Rock is a great venue for people of all ages. It is a friendly environment with lots of loyal long-time customers and new ones all the time. With the addition of new movie theaters, Keith and Mary have built an entertainment venue unlike any other in the St. Louis area. Check it out!

Bringing Organic to Music Production by Brenton Ebersole
In the summer of 2013, Belleville natives Richie Ducksworth, Alex Surmeier and a few friends in the local music scene, had a vision of musicians and recording artists working together in synergy, pooling resources to better work with each other. “I had been producing for a while already and I had this idea one day while I was at work,” Richie said. “Why isn’t there a collection of people that are like minded about music, that help each other go places or do things… not just with recording artists, but just anyone one who is trying to create something.” Alex had recently completed the audio engineering program at Vatterott College - ex’treme Institute by Nelly and Richie had completed the program at Full Sail University earlier that winter. Alex and Richie started building music together. Since the beginning, it’s been a creative blend of knowledge coming from two parallel schools of music; a true collaboration. This became the foundation of their business; a joint effort between musicians and recording artists. They would help artists create their musical vision through a more organic approach to music. The Great Joint Commission (TGJC) has been built bare bones from the ground up. Surmeier explained that they figured out what they needed to provide the service they wanted for other musicians. Alex said, “It’s just been us two; we’re the only people answering all the emails, mixing the recordings... we’re just trying to do what we want (on all levels).” Keeping things this streamlined keeps costs down and allows them a more hands-on approach with each production. Posted on their website, The Great Joint Commission has beats to sample, for sale or for lease. This is a very attractive option to musicians in a changing industry where often a produced song may only capture an audience’s attention for a short time. Segments are available to lease individually or in package deals of two, five or ten. Leasing a beat grants the artist the rights to distribution, up to two thousand copies, but TGJC retains the legal rights to the recording. If the artist really digs one of the beats, they also have the option to purchase the rights to the track. Hosting the files on their website is a great way for people to sample what TGJC is capable of. Many of the beats listed on their site have been leased or sold to artists, some as far away as Texas and Oklahoma. Their Twitter page keeps them in real-time direct communication with their customers, further streamlining the process and allowing for custom beat works even for artists that can’t readily collaborate in person. Having premixed tracks grants them stability for the business and a way to spread their art out to interested ears. But Alex and Rich’s true passion 24
Str8Up Magazine
lies in the real-time work with artists, working on custom collaborations. “It’s one thing for us to sit down in the studio and make beats, but you never know what the artist is really going to be feeling,” Alex said. The Great Joint Commission now has a production studio in Swansea, IL. This allows them to have a deeper involvement in the creative process and a space to cater to each artist’s specific style or instruments. Richie explained, “That’s our specialty, that’s what we like doing more than anything. We like to meet people and work with people. Come to us with an idea, and we’ll make it happen.” This adaptability is important for almost every kind of music, and particularly in the music scene The Great Joint Commission has been most actively working with: the St. Louis area underground hip-hop community. Hip-hop beats are always about what’s hot. So, once they sit down with an artist and hear what concept they’re going for, they try to work at the fastest possible pace. Alex said, “You can hear the difference in the end result when people work together.” Working for the fastest possible response time gives the artist the best chance to stay on the edge of what’s fresh. Many artists are calling in Alex and Rich’s help with both building beats and completing their recordings. Metro East hip-hop artists the Great Joint Commission has worked with include “Doorway” of Fairview Heights,

“Network” and “Scripts and Screws” of Belleville and “E.S.E.” of East St. Louis. Artists from the West side of the Mississippi have been taking notice as well. TGJC has worked with acts like “Family Affair”, “Rockwell Knuckles”, “Indiana Rome”, “Tef Poe” of St. Louis and “Monkh”, “Lot 7” and Tony Walker from Columbia, MO. Doorway’s video ‘Out There’ won Best HipHop Video of 2012 at the St. Louis Underground Music (SLUM) Fest in January 2013. Richie produced that video. And Doorway won the RFT’s Best Hip Hop Group award that same year. “Some of our stuff that’s come out recently and stuff that’s about to come out in the next couple months is real ‘hood’, street stuff. There’s this song by “Doorway” called ‘Hero Inside’. It’s an old school hip hop, anti-heroine song that has guitar, strings and live bass,” Alex said. This type of song, released in the same range of work, shows they’re open to fit into each artist’s unique vision for each song. It’s a great opportunity for them to be involved with instruments and genres they may not have been exposed to previously. It’s a learning experience each and every recording. This keeps them well saturated in all the many shades of music, giving them a broader range to draw from for the next time they’re producing or recording a track.
Even though most of their experience to date is with hip hop artists, they are looking to work with any musician, singer, band or musical act, giving people a helping hand with the experience of extracting music from a thought and turning it to an audible format.

Zeke Genard “My name is Zeke Genard. I am 23 and from Collinsville, IL. I currently don’t have a set focus on any particular subject or style for my art. I enjoy keeping a fresh eye on new subjects and taking in new styles. The goal is to create a unique style I can call my own. Anyone interested in my paintings can contact me by e-mail. Open to commissions; we can discuss the size, the color scheme, and subject of your composition. I currently have work on display through the month of February at Cafe Ventana in St. Louis, MO. Thank you Friends and Family for all your support! E-mail: dangerzeke@gmail.com Facebook.com/ zeke.danger.3
