Come Create Your Own Way: The Brickstreet Art Gallery and Studio by Julia Jensen

Kathleen Wakefield has worn many hats. For fifteen years, she worked as a contracting officer. After leaving that job, marrying her husband, Tim, and moving up and down the East coast, she went back to school for medical billing and coding. After working as a contractor for doctors’ offices for over a decade, she moved to Breese and became caretaker for her parents. After her father’s passing, Wakefield knew she didn’t want to go back to her old career. A self-proclaimed art hobbyist, Wakefield decided to open her own gallery and studio, Brickstreet Arts, in downtown Lebanon, Illinois. Wakefield feels as though this is her calling. Though claiming she isn’t a classically trained artist, she has taken classes in various mediums and has learned how to do many things through lots of trial and error. “It’s awesome to come in every day and love it,” Wakefield says of her new venture. “It’s still work, but it’s different.” Brickstreet Arts opened in May and has quickly become a hit in Lebanon. The exhibition space at Brickstreet Arts is a welcoming cozy space, providing visitors with the perfect atmosphere to stroll through and enjoy the artwork currently on display, most of which is made on site. They currently offer classes for adults and children in pottery, ceramic painting, drawing, and glass slumping. Plus the ever-popular adult sessions of “Cork and Canvas” which combines the experience of creating one’s own painting while sipping wine with friends in a comfy, friendly atmosphere. Wakefield and her staff expect to expand those options soon. They plan on teaching wet clay work as well as classes in stained and fused glass. Whether self-produced or by one of their displaying artists, Brickstreet is a perfect place to get that unique gift for that special person or special occasion. Every home loves fine works of art. Located on Lebanon’s “Brick Street” next to Fezziwig’s Marketplace, Wakefield and her staff have completely transformed the space at 218 West St. Louis Street. This includes a complete transfor4

mation of the studio behind the gallery. What used to be a storage shed, Brickstreet Arts’ studio now houses two kilns and the artists’ workspaces. Since completing renovations and opening, Wakefield and her staff now have time to experiment and play in their new studio. The interior of the gallery is outfitted with custom cabinetry built by Wakefield’s husband and metal work by local blacksmith Cameran Kepper (artworks in themselves). The gallery is a beautiful showcase of both the artistry on display as well as the craftsmanship that went into the space. Tricia Rehkemper is one of Wakefield’s resident artists. Rehkemper graduated with her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts with a specialty in ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She’s worked throughout Europe and was a resident artist for four months at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary. Though she considers herself more of a sculptor, Rehkemper is schooled in many mediums and has trained as a painter as well as a ceramicist. Wakefield and her team dream of their gallery and studio becoming a popular spot in downtown Lebanon. While currently offering classes in drawing, ceramics and acrylic painting for adults and children, they plan also to work with other merchants in Lebanon for joint classes and have already started to schedule special events with other shops in town. Already

on the schedule is wine tasting with neighbor Fezziwig’s while brushing canvas in the gallery workspace. Wakefield has plans for a second space in New Baden. The second location would be used as a studio for production and classes with studio spaces available for rental in the second location. “People don’t realize how many artists there are in the area,” said Rehkemper. They foresee the creation of a co-op between other artists throughout the area. The main goal of Brickstreet Arts is to make culture and art approachable and available to everyone. “Art in everyday life improves quality of life,” Rehkemper said. “It forges a connection between you and the artist.” When visitors attend a class, they

have the opportunity to make something unique and personal that they can use and enjoy every day. “It’s a different experience when you’re connected to it and it makes you happy,” Wakefield said of handmade goods. The joy of creating something yourself adds a new facet to the routine. Having art in your everyday life may sound like a small thing, but it allows you to connect to the person who created it and creates a cultural awareness. Everyone makes things differently and distinctively because everyone is different. That’s the beauty of art. “The potential is unlimited,” said Wakefield.

Art

July 2014

Gateway to the Arts by Nancy Palmer The Gateway East Artists Guild is a non-for-profit organization made up of artists and art enthusiasts who have been assisting members and the public to explore the world of art since the group formed in 1971. That exploration of art takes many forms at many different levels. The Gateway East Artists Guild’s goal is to inspire artistic expression in everyone from students of art, to amateurs and professional artists, as well as the art lover, through monthly meetings and member activities, workshops, and exhibitions.

Monthly membership meetings of the Gateway East Artists Guild are open to guests and those interested in membership. Most members are from the Metro East, however the group is open to anyone who wants to join. The monthly meetings consist of a demonstration or presentation on a variety of art forms and topics, a brief discussion of Guild business, and an art contest and critique for participating members. The demonstration or presentation allows each attendee to explore a new art medium that he or she might not have otherwise learned about and/or tried. “In-house” member artists or special guest speakers are the presenters at the meetings and share insights into a particular art form or process. Recent topics include the art of paper cutting, artful leather tooling, 3-D photography, and professional framing. The upcoming August 6 meeting will feature Rachel Santel demonstrating encaustic wax painting. Also known as hot wax painting, this is a process of using colored, heated beeswax as a painting medium. The Guild monthly meetings are a great way to associate with and exchange ideas with fellow art enthusiasts. Meetings are at 6pm on the first Wednesday of every month and are held in the PSOP Center of Southwest20

ern Illinois College in downtown Belleville. Annual membership fees are $35, or $5 per month July - December. Workshops and educational programs arranged by the Guild can assist the novice as well as seasoned artist to master techniques in a variety of art mediums. The novice artist may have difficulty getting started or knowing what to do and a workshop will often provide the structure and guidance needed to spark creativity. A seasoned artist may be inspired by a workshop to try new methods and techniques, or may discover a totally new preferred art medium that they may not have tried without the workshop. The Guild also sponsors activities for members such as the recent field trip to see the French Impressionist Exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum. Exhibitions sponsored by the Gateway East Artists Guild provide opportunities for members and local artists to present their artwork to the community. The Guild participates in several large local shows and exhibits throughout the year. Besides offering opportunities to members for exhibiting and selling their work, the Guild also sponsors demonstrations to the public at some of the large shows such as the annual Art on the Square in Belleville, Illinois, and the Midwest Salute to the Arts in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Exhibits include the annual Framations show in St. Charles, Missouri, The Hettenhausen Performing Arts Center in Lebanon, Illinois, Downtown Belleville Art & Wine Walk in Belleville, Illinois, and the upcoming Gateway to Art show and sale at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Snows in Belleville, Illinois. The members of the Gateway East Artists Guild would not only like to extend an invitation to our monthly meetings, but to come out to our biggest show of the year at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. There will be about 130 pieces of artwork displayed including sculptures, paintings, and various other mediums. The opening reception will be from 1-4pm on July 20, 2014, with an award presentation at 2pm. The exhibit hours for the duration of the show through August 15, 2014, will be Monday 10am-3pm, and Tuesday – Sunday 10am-6pm. Please join us!

A Rose by Any Other Name – The New Neighborhood Herb Garden by Michelle McIntosh A new public herb garden is making its home at the West End Public Square in Belleville. The West End Public Square is a pair of city parks on the South and North sides of West Main Street at 11th Street. The spaces have been the home of a pair of rose gardens maintained by the Belleville Area Rose Society. Though the roses will remain in the North park, it was recently decided to remove the roses from the South park as they were dying there due to the lack of sunlight in this beautiful shady grove. “I went out to introduce myself to the workers and explain about the coffee shop that my daughter and I opened and how I grow herb plants,” said Sharon Egler, manager of Miscellanea House Coffee Shop – just across the street. Interested in replacing the roses with an herb garden, “They told me that they were pulling out the roses on the south side because they were dying and I should contact the city about taking over the area.” Eglar contacted the Belleville Parks and Recreation Department and submitted a plan for what she wanted to do in the small garden area. Within a week of submitting the plan, she received the approval for an herb garden. “I feel it’s a chance to bring a little bit more history back to the house that sits on the adjoining area”, said Egler, “I feel almost everyone can relate to going back to their grandma’s house and smelling mint plants.” And history is definitely something this neighborhood has. From 1852, this area was the independent Village of West Belleville and this corner was the village public square. The Village of West Belleville, which encompassed the area from Richland Creek to 17th Street, existed until 1882 when it merged with the City of Belleville. Historic Ebeling-Maurer House is on the grounds of the West End Public Square park and sits directly behind the proposed new herb garden. The park happens also to be the starting point of the Old West Belleville Walking Tour. The tour is hosted by the Belleville Historical Society and led by local historian, Robert Brunkow. In 1836, Theodore Hilgard bought 134 acres in this area that included what is now 10th Street Baking Company, the West End Public Square rose garden, the new herb garden and the Eberling-Maurer house. Hilgard was a German immigrant and was attributed to be the first person to introduce viticulture (the culture or cultivation of grapevines and grapes) to Illinois. First, he tried to discover which of the Rhenish or French vines were best adapted to the climate, but soon found the indigenous Catawba grape most suitable, and he produced a wine that acquired a high local reputation. The village of West Belleville grew up around him and was incorporated in 1852. Some of the older historic buildings can still be seen around the neighborhood by driving or taking Dr. Brunkow’s Walking Tour. Over time, this wine-centered village became one of the region’s beer brewing centers. Amongst the historical features of the neighborhood, many new things are happening. Author and illustrator Sindi Smith recently moved into this neighborhood. “Simply Sindi Smith” is her book and card shop adjacent to the new herb garden. She loves her “new” neighborhood and the advent of the herb garden. “I think it’s a really beneficial thing. Herbs have healing properties,” said Smith. Like her Miscellanea House neighbors, she is pleased that the City of Belleville is beginning work on a new streetscape project for this section of West Main

Street. The streetscape, to be modeled after the recent renovation of the downtown section of Main Street, will take 2-3 years to complete. Workers from Kaskaskia Engineering can be seen going up and down Main Street researching and measuring for the construction plan. Belleville’s new Police Station will be on West Main at 6th Street. It will be at the head of the revitalized Main Street. The new Main Street will continue to the 2600 block to include the campus of Lindenwood University. The herb garden is just a small piece of what this area has to offer. Within just the two blocks either side of the park, one could easily spend the day getting lost in both the new and old. The beautiful historic buildings. Numerous services, shops and restaurants. Get your car repaired. How about a hair cut? Taste and smell those specialty cakes and coffees. Search out antiques and hobby items. A meal with your favorite beverage? Have your canine friend groomed and pampered. And rest on a park bench to smell the mint in the herb garden. Find out more about the Walking Tours at the Belleville Historical Society. Take the West Belleville Walking Tour (benefits the Belleville Historical Society) by contacting Robert Brunkow at 618-236-7481 or rdevb@earthlink for reservations and more information. The tour starts at the West End Public Square herb garden from which you will also find: Miscellanea House Coffee Shop, Kutz and Fadz Barber Shop, 10th Street Baking Company, Forgotten Treasures Antiques, Flamingos Restaurant, Simply Sindi Smith Books and Gifts, Harter’s Hobby Shop, Stein Automotive, and Downtown Dog.

Kathy Gomric - Cover Artist

Drawing is my PASSION! A God given talent discovered at an early age and nurtured in my teen years and in the 70’s and early 80’s entering the competitive ring. Predominantly pencil drawing in black/white and grey, I master many techniques that bring the paper to life. When I draw, I am often inspired by something, but as I draw it evolves on its own. I let it take me where it will. I never know what the finished product will be until it presents itself. This month, I will be exhibiting at the Art At The Square, Alton (IL) Square Mall and at the Gateway East Artist Guild exhibit Gateway to Art at the National Shrine of our Lady of the Snows (see related article in this edition of Str8Up Magazine). In August I am going to be in the Midwest Salute To The Arts, Fairview Heights (IL), and in October, Art In The Park, Highland (IL). I am a member of local art organizations including Gateway East Artist Guild, St. Louis Artists’ Guild, Art St. Louis, and the Jacoby Art Center. I am also a member of the Artists Registry which does special benefit shows in the area from time to time. Explore my works and contact me at DrawingFantasiesbyKathy.com Editor’s Note: The remarkable work of Kathy Gomric was previous featured in Str8Up Magazine in May 2013.

I spent most of my childhood in the Belleville Metro area. I graduated from Freeburg High School in 2007 and attended SWIC, where I found my love for the medical field. I will begin Nursing school at Lutheran School of Nursing in St. Louis this coming January 2015. Art has been the ultimate avenue for me to express myself in ways that words couldn’t. I have had no formal training in art since high school, and have always used my art as more of a therapeutic hobby than anything else. It wasn’t until I saw that Sole Survivor Art Gallery in Belleville supported local, unknown artists, that I thought to enter my own work. Sole Survivor gave me the chance to put my artwork in their gallery and I was overjoyed, and a little shocked! I didn’t think that I could turn my love for all things art into something that might inspire others. I find inspiration for my own art from the world and the people around me. I channel my emotions into my art. I use the love from my fiancé, family, and friends as a driving force behind my color choices and subject matter. I’m infatuated with color - bright, rainbow like strokes against a solid and dark background - anything that pushes the boundaries of a “normal” color palette. I’m inspired by my vintage lifestyle of victory rolls, cat eye glasses, and head scarves. I most often paint the human form, mostly in nude or in portrait form. I prefer a challenge. The human form is the most challenging for me. I use a wide variety of mediums including beads, pearls, glitter and gems, mostly to emulate the decadence of the 1920’s and even the swirls and twirls of the Art Nouveau period! I use anything from Prismacolors to acrylic and oil paints. For me art is a way of life, something I’ve always had, and without it I’d be lost. You can find me at Facebook.com/ReneeCanettaArt.
