While small in scale and budget compared to most Hollywood movies, the production of “Belleville” brought a level of filmmaking experience and professionalism rarely seen in the Metro East. Accompanying Trentman, Ewald, and O’Leary from Los Angeles were Director of Photography Brett Frager and location sound mixer Johnny Kubelka. Most of the other cast and crew positions were filled by locals, including by several current and former students of the film program at Southwestern Illinois College: First Assistant Director Damon Taylor, Production Coordinator ShaTonya McClain, and Script Supervisor Logan Short along with others. “I couldn’t have asked for a nicer bunch of people to work with,” Logan said after the film was finished. “They definitely guided me and helped educate me about the industry and what it takes to work in film. If there is any magic in filmmaking, it’s in the way that everyone works together to achieve a common goal. November 2013 delivering port-a-potties, a generator to provide electricity for lights, and a camper trailer which served as a combination mess hall and dressing room for the actors. Like many local people who have never witnessed a film shoot, Bob Trentman was very impressed by the operation. “It’s just cool to watch how these guys work. I’ll probably never see anything like it again in my life.” The farm was the site of perhaps the biggest logistical challenge for the filmmakers, when over 100 extras converged for a scene in which the townspeople come to help rebuild Willie’s house. A large crane was brought in for a birds’ eye views, and a remote-controlled Quadcopter hovered in the air overhead with a tiny GoPro camera recording aerial shots. The army of extras, ranging in age from 10 to 80, seemed excited to be a part of the project, and several lingered after the shoot was completed to have their pictures taken with the director and the stars of the film. Ewald and Trentman treated everyone from the lead actors to extras and production assistants with the same respect and gratitude. “My brother is awesome,” said Bob Trentman, observing the filming from the seat of his John Deere tractor on the family farm in Freeburg. “He is just a totally genuine guy.” That’s quite a compliment coming from a guy on a tractor. Ted’s salt-of-the-earth character was revealed dramatically one night during an unexpected mishap on the set. While filming a quiet scene around a campfire on the Trentman farm, suddenly the borrowed generator burst into flame. Fire spewed from the gas tank while the crew watched in horror from a distance, wondering what to do. Camera operator Christopher Jordan, like a true camera guy, kept filming to capture the drama, while others recommended letting the fire burn itself out. Not Ted. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket, rushed to the nearby horse trough for water, and charged at the fire. He hurled bucket after bucket of water at the flames until, like Red Adair battling an oil well fire, he scored a direct hit on the burning plume and put it out cold. Try to imagine an actor or producer on a Hollywood movie doing that! Trentman grew up in Belleville, attending Henry Raab Elementary School before going on to high school in O’Fallon and college at Illinois State. After filming on the “Belleville” movie was complete, Trentman visited Henry Raab Elementary and Central Jr. High to talk about the project and show a few scenes in what must have been one of the most exciting assemblies of the school year for the kids there. When asked how they liked making movies here compared to in L.A. (where they all worked together on the feature film “Hidden Hills” last year), the filmmakers were unanimous: “I like it here much better. It’s so hard to make the kinds of movies I want to make in Los Angeles.” Actor Tim O’Leary agreed. “There is such a community here. In L.A. you don’t have that. You have to make your own community there, but it’s not the same.” According to Script Supervisor Logan Short, “What was so cool about the movie was seeing the community of Belleville do exactly what the community in the story was supposed to do—come together for a common goal. And how Ted Trentman, even though he was the producer and star of the film, always kept such a positive attitude. I think it was mutual; the people of Belleville made it easy for him to always stay positive.” In the end, what is most remarkable about Trentman and Ewald is their motivation for making movies. They are clearly in it for something other than money. They enjoy making movies that make a difference in the world and provide inspiration to others. With their skill and experience, it would be easy for them to make a good living working on commercial movies, but they would much
rather make the kind of movies they want to make, even if it means investing their own money in the projects. “People need to understand that I’m not just making this movie for myself. I’m making this movie for US.” By “us” he meant Belleville, the town that launched him into the world. Judging by Trentman’s accomplishments and character, Belleville did a good job. Trentman and Ewald plan to finish editing “Belleville” by early next year, and are hoping to screen the film at the Lincoln Theater and at Southwestern Illinois College, possibly in conjunction with Belleville’s bicentennial celebration. Stay tuned to Straight Up Magazine for updates and release information. Ted and Dan are already talking about another film project they hope to come back to the Metro East to shoot. It’s a story about a high school speech team, like the one Ted was on as a student at O’Fallon High School. “Being on the speech team was what got me interested in acting in the first place.” It is only natural that he wants to celebrate the experience in a film. “It’s a way of giving back,” he says, just as he gave back with his film, “Belleville.”

Str8Up staff writer Dan Cross teaches film and runs the film program at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, and served as set photographer. He was “imbedded” with the film crew of Belleville during their work in the Metro East. He also works on other local films, including the recent feature “Go South for Animal Index,” on which he served as editor, assistant director, and co-director of photography. “Go South for Animal Index” will screen at the St. Louis International Film Festival on November 24 at 6:30pm at the new KDHX Performing Arts Center at Grand Center. A River of Pines Runs Through It – The Tiadaghton House by Julia Jenson Jim and Holly Lovell had a dream. And when Jim retired after 28 years in the Air Force in June 2013, he and his wife Holly realized that now was the chance to open their dream store. And they knew just the place. The couple fell in love with historic Lebanon when Jim was stationed at Scott Air Force Base from 2005-2008. Having grown up in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, Jim and Holly loved the quaintness of small towns with all their charm and quirks. Holly told her family for years that she wanted her own store. After twelve years in retail, she knew she loved working with and getting to know people. There is truth in doing what you love and, with Jim’s career in the military, the couple began collecting arts and antiques that were unique to each area in which they lived. The dream

took on a life of its own from there. They wanted to give real people the opportunity to show local artwork. They opened Tiadaghton House on August 31st. The house, located in Lebanon at 111 West St. Louis Street, became available in 2012, and the Lovells jumped at the opportunity, working long distance from Washington, D.C. for a year. After living in Boston, D.C., and other big cities, Jim and Holly missed the charm of small town life. An homage to their hometown’s history, they named their new space the Tiadaghton House. Tiadaghton is an Iroquois word that means “River of Pines.” The residents of Jersey Shore signed their own declaration in conjunction with the Declaration of Independence, and every year under the Tiadaghton Elm, the town would reenact the signing. Built in 1912, the space in Lebanon was originally the home and office of the town’s doctor. Now, the location is home to over 60 different artists and craftsmen. Jim and Holly are focused on showcasing local talent; over 50 of the artists are from the area, and only a few are from outside of Illinois. Jim and Holly want to represent local artists at all levels from novice to award-winning professionals, as well as all mediums: mixed media, ce-

Jim said it’s fun to be able to provide them the opportunity to show their work in the space. “We wanted to be a place for artists to have a space to show off their art,” Holly said. Since opening this fall, over half of the artists have sold artwork. Holly hopes to sell art from all of the artists soon. They hope the Tiadaghton House becomes a fixture in the community, bringing people in from all over. The Tiadaghton House is also home to four studios upstairs. Currently, three of the spaces host resident artists who are there a few days a week and on weekends. Customers can interact with the artists on a more personal level, watching them practice their skills and learning about each piece.

A Record, A Decade: EarthSol’s Second Album Release by Mark Johnson Ten years; one could say it’s been awhile since a new EarthSol album has come out. But the beloved Belleville act never left their instruments to gather dust and have constantly written songs and played shows throughout that release hiatus. After a return to the mixing boards, they’ll soon release their second album, “Testament”, at a release party at Cicero’s in St. Louis on November 23rd. Even if it’s been awhile since they’ve put out a new recording, EarthSol has been anything but inactive: “Creation never took a backseat; production did,” Kim Vrooman, lead vocalist and one of the two founding members, said. For the uninitiated: EarthSol is comprised of Kim Vrooman on guitar and vocals, Matt Scott, her brother-in-law, on guitar, Dan Cross on bass and Larry Hoff on drums and kit. The group formed around Kim and Matt who began jamming in 1999. The name comes from a sci-fi story Kim wrote for a creative writing class, from the moniker she bestowed a group of people who resisted plugging into an internet afterlife in the story’s techno-dystopian future. Kim and Matt have been the principle songwriters for the band over the years, and they’ve had one bassist previous to Dan, and Larry, the original drummer, rejoined the band just last year after moving back from Colorado. Although their fourteen-track second album has yet to be released, long-time fans will likely recognize some of its tracks. EarthSol is a band that gives primacy to performance, and they have stuck to that mode, playing monthly shows even with a load of professional and social responsibilities in their daily lives. That means that a lot of new recordings are songs that fans have heard at shows already, tunes they can already hum and sing along to, now in a package more portable than a four-person band. For Kim, familial obligations were one of the major factors that kept her from finishing production on “Testament”. Kim became a mother twice over during that ten-year gap, and she also opened a business and quit smoking. With a full plate and empty ash tray, Earthol’s fans were often the main motivating force for getting the band off stage and in the studio to finish production on their album.
EarthSol’s fans insistence on them finishing the album is thanks to the band’s eclectic sound and lyrics that focus on sharing positivity and love. With a wealth of subjects channeled through imagery of the elements, of war and peace, and through musical styles ranging from blues to folk, rock to country, EarthSol is a band that one must see live. Those who have followed the band over the years will feel a sense of familiarity with the new release, but, perhaps, they’ll also sense more of the songwriting alchemy that has fueled the band for over a decade in this collection of songs. Much of the songwriting for “Testament” has been the result of Kim and Matt’s collaborations. The duo penned nine of the fourteen tracks on the album, and cowriting has become a more important part of EarthSol’s artistic expression over the years. The connection the two have when writing songs has comes across in the newer material through songs that more fully embody the band’s kind-heartedness and joyful approach to life. “We want people listening to us to feel like they’re a part of the moment,” Kim said. And hear more of that axiomatic positivity that surges through their live shows: “We’re all here to help each other and to enjoy life.” Melding musical talent with their outlook, the band also shares a commonality with many of their fans that creates a unique sense of community at their shows: “We’re soul searchers, and we welcome other soul searchers to our shows,” Kim said. Sammylane Wirth My interest in photography began when I was in elementary school and used a 35mm camera, an Argus C3, which still works today! Fast forward a few years, and I found my children were often my favorite subjects through the viewfinder. In 1993, I began getting more passionate about photography, and purchased a Canon SLR. My enthusiasm increased after a few “lucky” shots and I joined a local camera club to learn how to make my “luck” more consistent—and what fun to discover more “like-minded” people! My passion has been in capturing images of the natural world; my by-line has been “Beauty is Nature’s First Language.” I have recently become absorbed in creating more abstract images.

Southwestern Illinois College and the St. Clair County Office on Aging partnered with the Gateway East Artists’ Guild and Art on the Square for this unique annual art competition and exhibition. More than 60 senior artists showcased their artistic abilities in several different art categories. The opening reception for this exhibit was Friday, October 11 at the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center on the SWIC Belleville Campus. The exhibition continued through Wednesday, October 16.
