November 2014 The Future of Filmmaking: November 13, 14, and 15 by Dan Cross

The people of Belleville had to wait 200 years for their first red carpet movie premiere, but they will only have to wait six months to have another. Expect Delays, the second feature film produced in Belleville by Dan Steadman and Ted Trent will premiere in November with screenings at the Lincoln Theater and in the sanctuary at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.

Rachel Farrell explained what had to be done. “One of the cast members works at the airport, and she was able to borrow the uniforms we used. I went to a craft store and got materials to make the airline logo you see on the podium, we brought in a computer, and a phone, and I just made sure to keep all the extras moving around like people do at the airport.”

Everyone who has seen the resulting scene finds it completely convincing, including Ted Trent. “I was not in that scene, so the only time I have seen it is in the movie. To me, it is an airport.”

“I used to go to St. Paul’s church when I lived here, and it is a Christmas movie, so it was a perfect place for us to screen this film,” explained producer and star Ted Trent, a native Bellevillian who now lives in Los Angeles.

For the second consecutive time, the filmmakers had a great experience working with all the local cast and crew. “I discovered so many talented actors here when we were auditioning people for Belleville, but most of them only got small roles in that film,” says director Steadman. “So for Expect Delays, I actually wrote most of the parts specifically for people who were in the first movie. Wayne Ault was one of them. He just blew “It is a Christmas movie, but it’s not a kid’s movie,” explains director Dan me away with his ability to improvise dialog.” (Ault had a bit part as a Steadman. “It’s about adult characters with grown up problems, because I janitor in Belleville, and in Expect Delays he plays one of the main roles, don’t think there are enough films like this. I wanted to make a Christmas the father of Ted Trent’s character). “Another one was Andra Harkins. movie that I would want to watch. I mean, yes, there is an elf in it, but She was the bookstore owner in Belleville, and she was so great, I would the elf is filling up Ted’s coffee cup with a little flask of liquor. If you watch have flown her anywhere to be in my next movie, but I didn’t have to. Love Actually or Home for the Holidays, you’ll see what we were going for.” Fortunately, everybody I wrote a part for said yes.” Because of this, the film is recommended for audiences over age 12.

The movie was filmed here this past May, not long after the debut of Steadman and Trent’s previous movie Belleville, which premiered at the historic Lincoln Theater in April. Filming a Christmas movie in May was challenging, but it led the crew to find creative ways to make the warm, green, Midwestern springtime look wintry.

“We filmed most scenes inside, and we used some footage I shot in Montana to help establish the winter time period. When I watch the movie now, I forget that it was actually hot outside when we shot. It looks like winter to me.”

Clever art direction helped. SIUE grad Rachel Farrell, who designed sets and costumes on both of the movies, shared one of the tricks she used. “We covered the windows with a solution of laundry detergent, dish soap, and water. At first, it just looks wet, but then it would crystallize and make the windows look like they were covered in frost.”

Another impressive bit of fakery the crew pulled off was transforming the Liberal Arts Building at Southwestern Illinois College into an airport terminal for a key scene in the movie. Actor Mike Cowan admits that he had his doubts about the idea. “I didn’t think they could pull it off. I was thinking that there was waaaaaaay too much stuff identifying the location as SWIC and they would not be able to cover it all. But the footage I have seen looks great.”

Several principal crew members on Belleville returned for Expect Delays, including camera operator Christopher Jordan, set and costume designer Farrell, production supervisor ShaTonya McClain, and First Assistant Director Logan Short. “It was great making our second movie here,” Trent said. “People seemed even more excited, and more professional.”

The cast and crew also clearly enjoyed working with Trent and Steadman again. “Ted is very sweet and patient, not a diva at all,” said Rachel Farrell. “Sometimes it would take us a while to finish the set, and he would just say, ‘we’ll shoot when you’re ready.’ And it was great working with Dan; he was always open to our suggestions and input, so we felt really free to experiment.”

Local businesses appearing in the movie include the Pie Pantry, the TOCO Shop, Miscellanea House, and Blanquart Jewelers. Feature film production is a boon to any area, as shown by the success of the recent blockbuster Gone Girl, which was filmed in Cape Girardeau, MO. As Mike Cowan puts it, “I think it gives Hollywood a wake up call to an area that is ripe for the picking and has the best tax credits around.” Farrell agrees. “This is so great for our area. There is so much support from the local community; they want to be involved, and they want the movie to succeed as much as the filmmakers do.”

Trent and Steadman are working diligently to achieve that success. They recently signed a distribution deal with Cobalt Pictures, who will work on

November 2014 marketing the films internationally. A consequence of this deal, however, is that the movie Belleville now has a new name: Neila. Apparently, the distributor didn’t think the name Belleville would have enough meaning for audiences internationally. Sorry, Bellevillians, but Neila (alien spelled backwards) will make it easier for Cobalt Pictures to market the film as a sci-fi movie.

mainstream movies lack. You can see what that future will look like on November 13th, 14th, and 15th. Come out and show your support for these talented, hardworking filmmakers and all the excitement they are bringing to our area!

What: Premier of Expect Delays, a locally produced feature motion picture Trent and Steadman are already planning their next movie, which they hope to shoot here in 2015. The film is still in development, but it will most likely be a sports movie (Steadman often cites Friday Night Lights as an influence). The filmmakers are hoping to attract more big-name actors next time, which will help them reach a wider audience. “Our distributor told us that our films already look like Hollywood movies, just without the big stars,” Trent explained.

Where: Lincoln Theatre / St Paul’s United Church of Christ, Downtown Belleville When: November 13, 14, 15 / 6:30pm Who: Ted Trent and Dan Steadman plus lots of other local talent How: Get your tickets at www.expectdelaysmovie.com

Follow on Facebook Expect Delays will premiere at the Lincoln Theater in downtown Belleville on Thursday, November 13th, at 7:30 pm. The red carpet gala and preshow (an hour of music by local artists) will begin at 6:30.

The film will then screen at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Belleville on November 14th and 15th at 7:30 pm, also with an hour of local musical entertainment beginning at 6:30. Tickets are available at the official movie website, www.expectdelaysmovie.com

Let’s hope that local film production like this will continue. Trent believes it will. “The future of filmmaking will look like what Dan and I do.” Making movies on location outside Hollywood with local talent is definitely cheaper, but also lends the films an authenticity that

Family Matters at Stur

Alex Lopez took care of me that night, explaining the menu, offering suggestions, making recommendations based on my feedback.

by John Dorroh Did you know that Edwardsville has its own Cheers? Well…sort of. “Stur,” located at 4 Club Centre Court on Highway 159, has a strong family feel when it comes to its clientele. I witnessed it one Wednesday night in midOctober, and if I’m not mistaken, I got adopted!

“I’ve been here since Angie and John opened back in May,” he said, “…it’s family here,” he said. That theme rang constant throughout my three-hour visit. The Food

Appetizers include Baked Heartland Goat Cheese Tart, Vietnamese Lemon Grass Chicken Wings, and Rohans I don’t think it would be fair, however, to call Stur Restaurant and Lounge a bar. It’s certainly more than a bar, al- Dumplings, which is the one I chose. I’ve had all kinds of though the bar, which is huge, seems to be the focal point dumplings in my life – Southern style chicken and dumplings like my mom used to make, steamed dumplings in of the restaurant. Diana Fields was the mixologist on the night of my visit, and she stayed busy preparing delightful Chinese restaurants, and German baby dumplings, spaetand innovative concoctions such as the signature cocktail, zle. These rather large dumplings looked like mini-bread loaves and contained a stuffing of two different meats, “Creating a Stur.” lightly fried and served with a thin, honey soy sauce for I was eager to sample it and learned that it’s made of dipping or pouring directly onto the plate. I had had cucumber trees. No one has ever had to call me to dinner and that martinis before, but this went way beyond that. I asked night was no exception. I won’t cover that here since The music it’s a story all by itself. I can, however, tell you that from its humble beginnings, Mastermind is expanding after When Stur opened in the late spring of 2014, three local having won awards in several trade competitions, creatmusicians who have each played with several other bands, ing a world-class vodka using only local products and local performed and have been there ever since. November 2014 I had a feeling that this trio was holding back that night. Don’t get me wrong… many of my seasoned friends and I appreciate a restaurant, such as Stur, that values conversation over loud music. But I suspect that Night Train could raise the roof should they so choose. Later in the evening, a local DJ from WIL (92.3fm) sat in with Night Train and sang several songs. He was a good fit. I’d probably pay to hear him perform, with or without the band. Yet another example of the Stur family.

Who: Angie and John Schmitt

In addition to Wednesdays, Stur has live music on Friday What: Stur Restaurant and Lounge and Saturday nights. Check out their website or find them Where: 4 Club Centre Court in Edwardsville on Facebook or give them a call at 618-307-9613 to see who’s playing. When: Tuesday through Friday: 4 - 9pm, Saturday: 11am 10:30 pm In closing A man named Mark appeared from the kitchen with a tray of cordial glasses filled with minced strawberries and chocolate mousse. He didn’t have to twist my arm at all. Nor anyone else’s. No charge, just another example of feeling at home in a friend’s big dining room.

Why: Wonderfully Welcoming Unique Local Restaurant How: 618-307-9613

And then a piece of cake somehow jumped up onto my plate and made my taste buds go into overdrive…again. That piece of heaven had creamy caramel goo in between the layers, and it was like being a lucky participant in the audience who gets chosen to eat the finished products in one of those decadent dessert competition shows on the Food Network.

Angie and John Schmitt have found their niche in the restaurant scene in the Metro East, but without you there, it’s not complete. The staff is waiting to welcome you into your home away from home, so what are you waiting for? StraightUpMagazine.net

Dimitrina Stamboldjiev Kutriansky was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. After immigrating to the United States with her parents as a child, Dimitrina obtained a bachelors of arts in fine arts from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and a masters of arts, specializing in printmaking, from the University of Iowa. She later obtained her certification and masters in education and is now working full-time as an artist. “The two distinct types of images that I create are, in many ways, complementary to each other. The more stylized, graphic representations of the figurative roots represent the darker, more cynical side of the mind, while the realistically rendered landscapes become the expression of the more pliable, understandable human emotions. I believe that both are part of our wholeness, although we are not always keenly aware of either one.” Dimitrina lives in Collinsville, Illinois with her husband and daughter. www.dimitrinakutrianshy.com

When You Awake by Mytchy Mitch

When you read this I shall stand behind my word Waiting for you like an egg hatching to be a bird I shall call you my Cajun Beautiful eyes you are very special creation I speak in tongues but only you can decipher what I mean When you awake I can picture your eyes in my dream Only the truth in my words make you see whom I am You listen and also keep a conversation stronger than a dam If I were to be a reason for you not to leave this city For I see your inner beauty and a face so pretty

You say I’m not like everyone which is fake When I saw you at first glance I had to take a double take You say you are afraid you might scare me away That has only been proven wrong and I shall not stray I make you smile when you day is grey I keep a balance in life like a dancer in ballet So as you continue to read Food for thought you mind I feed I leave you with this Your presence I miss
