Culture

October 2014

Comic Book Culture in the Metro East by Stephen Harrick Their characters dominate the box office and television screens. They appear in newspapers and online. Collectors spend hundreds of millions of dollars to procure the issues that they seek. Comics are everywhere, including the Metro East. San Diego may be home to the largest comic convention in the United States, but especially for those who cannot make it out to the West Coast, Illinois has much to offer comics enthusiasts. During the month of October, the Metro East will play host to a number of events that will entice any fan of comic books and comics culture. First up is Archon. Dubbed “The Midwest’s Premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Event,” this will be the convention’s 38th annual offering. Paul Daly is this year’s Artist Guest of Honor. He has illustrated and written a variety of comics, including Planet of the Apes, Alien Nation, The Terranauts and the Eisner Award-nominated series Athena Voltaire. Actor Tony Todd, who appeared in the film adaptation of the graphic novel The Crow, will also be on hand. Dozens of artists, writers and dealers (both local and national) will be in attendance, selling all forms of merchandise. Many of the artists will likely sketch commissions of your favorite characters, but be aware: the larger and more elaborate the request, likely the more expensive the price. The convention will also offer music performances, gaming, a grand masquerade, an art show, children’s programming, film screenings, dances both Friday and Saturday night, and much more. 6

Str8Up Magazine

The convention will take place October 3-5 at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville. Ticket prices vary according to which day you want to attend (adult tickets range from $25-$45, though prices for children are even more affordable). For tickets, panel information and updates on artists and dealers, check out www.archonstl.org/38. (See the QR Code) Anime Getaway is next up on October 25. Even though it might seem geared more for anime fans, the convention will offer plenty for fans of comics and manga as well. Also at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, the event will include panels, a cosplay contest, video games, the dealer’s room and more. In attendance will be comic book artist Jenn Blake, who has published work in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. She has also worked on the comic Albert the Alien. Other guests will include Todd Haberkorn and Three Rivers Okiya. The former is a voice actor whose talents may be heard in Star Trek Continues, Pokémon, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The latter is a group of historians and performers devoted to educating and promoting awareness of Japanese art and traditions through performances and demonstrations. With such a diverse array of talent in attendance, fans of anime, comics, gaming, television, and history buffs will find plenty of interest at Anime Getaway. Tickets are a mere $5 and available at the door. For more information, visit www.animegetaway.com/stlouis. (See the QR Code)

October 2014

Finally, McKendree College in Lebanon will host the cartoonist and film director Marjane Satrapi on October 27. Her most famous work, Persepolis, is an autobiographical look at Satrapi’s upbringing during the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Persepolis won the prestigious Prix Alph’art Coup de Coeur at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. She went on to co-direct a film adaptation of the book, which garnered Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations. She also wrote and illustrated Persepolis 2, Chicken with Plums, and Embroideries. This will be a unique opportunity to interact with an internationally respected creator of graphic novels and films. The program is free but tickets are required (available at www.mckendree.edu/the_ hett/speaker-series.php). (See the QR Code) Taken as a whole, these events only begin to demonstrate that comics and their readers and fans are a creatively rich and vibrant community within the vast shared culture of the Metro East. And by expanding the radius slightly, the month’s events list grows to include Lit in the Lou, a literary festival across the river in University City. Running October 10-12, the free event will feature Ignatz Award-winning cartoonist Kevin Huizenga. Whether you like superheroes, science fiction, memoirs, manga, or more, the Metro East has plenty to offer both first-time comic book readers and seasoned veterans alike. Archcon:

October 2014 “A Second Look at The Second Reading Book Shop” by John Dorroh In this day of chains -- big box stores, restaurants, car parts and service shops, etc. – it’s refreshing to find a locally-owned bookstore with character. The Second Reading Book Shop at 16 East Broadway Street in Alton seeks to meet the needs of a discerning reading public who want more than ordered rows of highly categorized books in an ‘antiseptic environment’. John Dunphy, a native Altonian, and somewhat of a Renaissance man, owns and manages the establishment, which is inhabited by three feline friends. (My favorite was Brisket, who looked like a …well… like a well-done beef brisket.) Dunphy’s great-uncle Joe became his role model, taking young John on field trips into the newsroom and printing plant of the local newspaper where Uncle Joe worked as the assistant editor. Dunphy’s love for reading (and eventually writing) followed him into the classroom. He is a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate with two degrees in history and is living a life that reflects his passions. He reads, writes, and interacts with customers - meeting the needs of people who want what most chains don’t offer. True, there is no coffee bar with biscotti and highlypriced muffins, but there is a nice selection of books in a shop that feels like home. Along with his taste for history, Dunphy delved into political science and philosophy, feeling that such a foundation would help him begin writing non-fiction articles and books. In fact, it did. Dunphy taught writing at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey until 2006 when he decided to devote his time to helping the book store cats keep house at 16 East Alton.

A brief history of the structure.… The original book store, Crivello’s (Mike Crivello), was founded in 1979. John discovered it as a patron and bought the place in 1987. The structure is an 1831 Federal-style building along Alton’s busy riverfront Broadway Street. “This is the final store,” he said, adding that he owns the building. That building, by the way, played a significant role in the Underground Railroad.

The guts… I had visited the store last winter on a blitz trip through Alton but did not have much time. During last week’s visit, I casually strolled through the shop and made some observations, first noting vintage classics lined and stacked along a wall. It smelled like what I think a bookstore should smell like – books! -- and I felt comfortable and at home. There was a cookbook section, philosophy, history, and a room for younger readers. I thumbed through sci-fi titles, pulp fiction, and spotted several slightly used modern novels. There were many books about and by locals.

John Dunphy, the writer… Just as it did not take Dunphy long to write his first non-fiction book (Lewis & Clark’s Illinois Volunteers, 2003), his fiction garden began to produce fruit with two chapbooks, Old Soldiers Fading Away and Stellar Possibilities. Several additional titles are on display and for sale, all written by Dunphy and his haiku group, The Mississippi Mud Daubers.

October 2014 What: The Second Reading Book Shop

The small group meets whenever they feel it’s time. There are no dues, no officers, no written guidelines.

“We have all bases covered in our shop,” said Dunphy, “and we also have first editions, collectibles.” His first book rests on one of the glass countertops next to Abolitionism and the Civil War in Southwest Illinois. Near that title, stands From Christmas to Twelfth Night in Southern Illinois. Needless to say, Dunphy is

a prolific writer. Uncle Joe’s inspiration was like some magic long-lasting tonic. It went a long, long way. His numerous titles of haiku - and forms of haiku – dotted the landscape. I couldn’t help buying three for myself: Touching Each Tree, (2014), Confluence: A Haiku Collection (The Mississippi Mud Daubers, 2009), and Zen Koanhead: A Senryu Collection, (2008). And there are others.

“We receive visitors from all over the country, all over the world,” said Dunphy. Alton may not be noted for its literary dominance, but people who like books and book stores seem to find their way to The Second Reading Book Shop. The building is well-marked. Look for the American flag… and a cat or two in the window.

National acts like The Beach Boys, Head East, Confederate Railroad, and the Roots and Boots Tour drew huge Even the attempt to cook a world-record breaking crowds as expected. But what was really nice to see was 200-foot-long bratwurst went off without a hitch. The brat how many local bands were invited to share in the spotwas made by Shubert’s Packing Co. in Millstadt, and a light. Local acts ranging from German brass bands to matching 200-foot bun was made by Belleville’s 10th Street bluegrass veterans George Portz, jazz virtuoso John FarBaking Company and carried a mile down Washington rar, Belleville rockers Earthsol and crowd favorite Old Salt Street to the grilling site on North Jackson by members of Union, all were given their time on the two stages. Kudos the Lindenwood football team. According to grill master to the organizing committee for including so much aweLarry Shubert, the huge brat was the result of two years of some homegrown talent! planning, including two practice runs of 50 and 100 feet. The experience showed as the record feat was performed with incredible discipline and effort from dozens of volPhotos by Dan Cross, Kathy Sax and Mark Polege unteers. Each time the giant sausage needed to be rolled another quarter turn, a coach called out over the bullhorn, “One! Two! Three! Hands on the brat! Now roll!”

The whole process was incredible.

How do you make a 200-foot-long grill? (Answer: with a sort of long, metal gutter propped up on bricks and boards on a long table). How much charcoal does it take to cook a 200 foot long bratwurst? (Answer: A lot. More than organizers expected, apparently, as they had to hurry and fire up several more bags after the first batch was used up.) Incredibly, the brat actually got uniformly cooked to a perfect golden brown without a single break. But perhaps the most surprising thing of all was how delicious the finished product was. Hundreds of people bought tickets to get a piece of the monster wurst (proceeds going to local food banks), and eating it felt exactly like taking communion, ingesting part of the history of the town.

Under the Cushions and

Between the Words

by Sandy Watts What I needed was a good ol’ fashioned typewriter to feed paper to and make solid clank rhythms with the tapping and pounding of keys in shared instants with the pop of every letter hitting the page. Sweet ding at the end of every line would be nice. Find myself beside kitchen windows, on bus benches, in passenger seats, always ready to write. Not worth thinkin’ that writing required a typewriter but it was a perfectly good place to put my mind on its mark; to sit settled & set and wildly ready to run - A solidly tangible material thing that only dollar bills stood in the way of. The cracked screen was less than helpful to what could easily be myriad great and crap collages of words. The small computer didn’t have to go, it just wasn’t made for the road. I say ‘road’ meaning continent-crossing journeys and trips across town or state… And though I’ve seen many a countless mile disappear beneath me over the years and decades, it ain’t even the beginning of it. It starts now with planted feet settling in the moment for a ‘typewriter-esque’ font appearing and disappearing behind dark cracked formations eclipsing much of the words as they take life on the screen. It’s just poetic fiction from here: Whatever name could apply to an American generation such as mine, it wouldn’t do it justice. We closed out and birthed millenniums while embarking into the age of the internet. Whispers and rumblings of a third world war, the arrival of terrorism into the limelight, Y2k and 2012 all made for a bit unsettling times for many and yet now entirely new waves of youngsters come up learning about them in history books. Seems reasonable to say that the life and times of our youth were a bridging period into a new world. I remember one night round 3am, looking around the room with my fingers still floating above the keys, seeing all manor of images and items whose main or only function was to be seen. Art, photos, nick-knacks - found and collected from one spot or another over many years. Those years over which the collection had been acquired were still smoldering behind us. Delivered unto this world with answers now lost in adulthood, we blazed quiet and tumultuous trails through the dry and dusty wheat fields of circumstance. Looking back is like falling upwards and context is never the same and rarely describable.

At one point or another I could have conveyed my entire list of possessions by inventorying my pockets and listing the items of my attire. Other times I could reasonably complain of having too much crap in my house. In this country, there are more empty houses, indefinitely vacant, than there are homeless folks. Our landfills rise halfway to the clouds with ‘disposable’ decadence, discarded toxins, and items of would-be-treasure for the have-nots going without. The rest of the waste mountains are comprised of the excess food that compost heaps crave and elsewhere citizens of the world give last breath in lack of. But treadmill sales and gym memberships remain forever on the rise, and size 0 dresses fly off the racks. Glued to couches and beds and driver seats and chairs, this new world fits into our skulls and has easy hands free devices so you can enjoy without taking your hands off of this, that, or…whatever. Sliding like snakes around blades of grass, gliding overhead like a bird of prey with no shadow, there are those among us inclined to tend to the fire and find new wood but hell if I got half a chance of describing in proper articulation. “I can write about ‘em but I can’t punctuate it” – Keroac… I couldn’t find my keys that morning, and now I was late. Priorities of all other sorts fell wayside quick and hard as I lifted and shifted papers and books and dishes and clothes. “Check the couch cushions.” She said, as if it was the only legitimate place to look. So to the abyss with it all if they weren’t there right next to my lighter and every kind of coin our country mints. I flew down the stairs like my feet were wheels and made my way out into the sun. Five blocks and two lefts, he was waitin’ out front as the jeep pulled to a halt skinning a touch of rubber against the curb. Brian had been in and out of town several times since we last exchanged more than a moment’s social pleasantry in passing. Here like a valet or doorman brimming with a reserved excitement that never came off beyond subtle; bearing a sort of ‘much-to-tell’ smirk that scarcely would be noted or even seen, save for those who knew him. Once inside, up a squeaky elevator, and down the hall to the right, we kicked off shoes and made way toward the balcony. “Care for a drink?” he said with a prior-century New York barkeep tone. “I’ll murder damn near anything you can pour into a glass at this point.” I told him. We must’ve smoked a pack and a half between us as several hours slipped away to the soundtrack of conversations musing over this and that and lingering long on happiness and the greater good. “Wise man once postulated that everything human beings do is selfish, at least somewhere in its roots… Generosity gives the giver joy, we find vicarious happiness in making others happy… So, he says, if everything one does is selfish, best to choose your selfishness such that it is also good for others.”

October 2014 “Coming from the idea that selfishness is unavoidable and that we don’t do ourselves much service in obsessing over the ‘sinful’ nature of selfishness and attempting to eradicate it from ourselves completely?” “Ya that’s the trip,” I said resting my glass on the black metal rail high above the mild hustle of the street below. “The Buddha himself made it clear that the aspiration of a compassionate life is fully incomplete without self-compassion. And try being compassionate with yourself meanwhile chastising your every thought, feeling, or action that you can possibly label as selfish. It’s tricky like that.” “Reminds me that it is said the last desire when letting go of all desires is – the desire to have no desires.” He said with a soft brief chuckle. “You have to seek it without wanting.” “You have to allow it and have patience.” I said turning to face the sky. “Once you’re that far, the seeking only sets you back. It resonates similar to the quandary of being committed to a goal but unattached to the results. Climbing the lengthy while up towards a peak without any attachment to actually getting there; therein lies the challenge.” “The challenge is essentially the same – to care without attachments. But ya, it’s a fair question of how does one be desireless and unattached and still be counted on to reach one’s goals.” “It’s odd because most of us would venture the assumption that if a man who works at a bank was suddenly and zenfully struck with enlightenment, his days at the bank would surely be over. But while its naturally possible for that to be the case, enlightenment doesn’t mean no more laundry and dirty dishes – or as I’ve read in many places, “chopping wood and carrying water”. Getting there isn’t about checking out of your life, though that may seem to happen at some point… it is about really being in it.”
