Sunset & Beyond
The Grand Strand is famous for its gorgeous beaches, but after the sun goes down, local theatres take the stage with fun, exciting entertainment. Our theatre scene offers a huge variety - check out the list below and pick a night to light up the stage! The first of its kind in Myrtle Beach, Calvin Gilmore launched The Carolina Opry in 1986. His classic live music variety show features a cast of 36 of the nation’s top singers, dancers, comedians, and musicians. While taking you back to an age of bravery and honor as you witness epic battles of steel and steed, Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament will serve you a fourcourse dinner fit for royalty. As the battle rages, noble guests feast on garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes, the pastry of the Castle, coffee, and two rounds of select beverages. Pirate’s Voyage Dinner and Show offers a swashbuckling adventure, complete with dinner. Join Captain Blackbeard, the most famous pirate to ever sail the seven seas, and his quartermaster, Calico Jack, as they lead the Crimson and Sapphire crews in an epic battle for lost treasure on land, on deck, in water, and high above full-sized pirate ships in a 15-foot deep indoor hideaway lagoon.
Offering wholesome, family entertainment, The Asher Theatre showcases celebrities as well as emerging artists. The owners are passionate about working with students and helping them become future artists through their many programs fit for different ages ranging from elementary through college. For Motown, Magic & Comedy, and Elvis, visit GTS Theatre. Offering intimate Cabaret evenings with audience participation, this theatre gets rave reviews. February through October, Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing delights audiences with “One: The New Show,” while November and December are reserved for the theatre’s special holiday musical experience. Legends in Concert features five or six tributes in each show that look like and sound like the stars they re-create from Elvis, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, The Temptations, and many more! Shows nightly from February through December at Broadway at The Beach. 19

The Carolina Opry
On June 2, 1986, The Carolina Opry opened its doors for the first time. Not only was this new entertainment the first show to open in Myrtle Beach, but it was the only show in the area for seven years after its grand debut. The impressive variety of live music shows is traced back to one man, Calvin Gilmore, and his vision that first-rate entertainment could thrive along the Grand Strand. The Carolina Opry quickly outgrew its original locations, so in 1991, Gilmore broke ground on the 2,200-seat stateof-the-art theater that The Carolina Opry now calls home. The Carolina Opry remained the standard that others tried to live up to and was one of the few theatres to remain not only standing but successful through this period. As the only show on the Grand Strand to have an owner that is local and
one who performs, produces as well as directs his own show, Gilmore’s dedication, creativity, and courage brought theater to the Grand Strand and is the reason that The Carolina Opry has remained at the forefront of the industry. Going on their 36th year of awardwinning live entertainment, The Carolina Opry brings shows to the Grand Strand throughout every season. The classic Carolina Opry show blends two hours of high-energy music, comedy, and dance. Time Warp showcases the best music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s blended with rich multimedia screens, special effects, and elaborate costuming. The Christmas Show of the South brings stunning changes every year, but the show always blends beautifully with time-honored tradition to create an unforgettable holiday experience with friends and family. 21
All Hopped Up!
We know how hot summer days on the coast can be, but don’t fear! We have just the right thing to compliment that heat, tall glasses of ice-cold beer. At the very south end of the Grand Strand in Georgetown, Winyah Bay Brewing Company is at a new location (120 King and 932 Front Street) where they have added a brand-new kitchen to serve food as well as incorporated great indoor and outdoor spaces for special events. This small craft beer maker is focused on the rich history of the town and its great community members. www.buzzsroost.com/winyah-bay-brewing-co Quigley’s Pint & Plate, located in Pawleys Island, is a family-friendly restaurant and brewery coupled with southern hospitality. Be sure to grab a 32oz Crowler (growler in a can) on the way to the beach so you can sip local craft beer safely as you relax under the sun. www.pintandplate.com Nestled in The Market Common of Myrtle Beach, Tidal Creek Brewhouse has craft beer as well as a craft kitchen. They offer coffee, tea, beer, breakfast, lunch, shareables, and even a dog-friendly menu. They have a spacious outdoor area and a Kids Korner to “Crabitat” in. www.tidalcreekbrewhouse.com New South Brewing, located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, has been serving fresh, flavorful ales and lagers since 1998. Luckily, you can find some of their popular beers around the area,
but make sure to check out their Tap Room for special brews unavailable elsewhere. You can also place orders online for curbside pickup. www.newsouthberwing.com Just a block away from the beach, the Grand Strand Brewing Company in downtown Myrtle Beach is ready to pour you their specialty beer. They have a full menu and offer both indoor and outdoor seating. www.grandstrandbrewing.com Independent Republic Brewing Co. is another microbrewery and beer garden in Myrtle Beach. It’s located along the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway at the landing of The Boathouse, a popular music venue. Enjoy a delicious dinner, a breezy view of the water, high-quality talent, and craft booze all in one place. www.independentrepublicbrewing.com In North Myrtle Beach, Crooked Hammock Brewery is a backyardcookout-inspired brewpub and restaurant located in the ever so dynamic Barefoot Landing. The owner has created a backyard escape where people (and their animals) can gather, relax, and listen to live entertainment. The backyard has games, a kid’s playground, and of course, hammocks. www.crookedhammockbrewery.com 23

Culinary Creations Well-prepared and delicious, a good meal is one of life’s pleasures, and an important part of any vacation is enjoying your favorite foods. Locally, trained chefs prepare a dynamic variety of cuisines for your dining pleasure. Seafood, of course, is served in every way imaginable, from the traditional Murrells Inlet or Calabash seafood platter to fresh and tasty sushi or a perfectly grilled piece of freshly caught fish drizzled with a rich, complex sauce. Our local blue crabs are a delicacy steamed, prepared as crab cakes, or in she crab soup. Oysters are another local favorite
and depending on the time of year, can be eaten steamed, fried, or on the half shell. A regional favorite, shrimp and grits, comes to your table piping hot, creamy, and unforgettable! One of our favorite restaurants to enjoy all of the above is Carolina Seafood & Steak, located in Myrtle Beach. Barbeque is another popular South Carolina dish, but even within the state, there is an ongoing and sometimes heated debate over which type of sauce is the best. Our coastal area prefers a spicy, vinegarbased sauce, and can be found at many local barbeque restaurants,

paired with sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and always, banana pudding. From Georgetown all the way up the South Carolina coast, the Grand Strand has a plethora of fine dining prepared by the best of the best local chefs. We have a huge appreciation for our International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, the exquisite chefs
they create, and all the work they do for our community. No matter what delicious cuisine you decide on, be sure to take note of the chef ’s specials - these are only available for a short tine and are always a divine choice!
Bon appétit!

Culture Abounds
Even if you’ve spent your vacations along the Grand Strand for years, a trip to a local museum or a historical piece of land gives a fresh perspective and stirs your emotions while connecting you with the past.
While we agree that the beaches are outstanding, our marshes, rivers, and estuaries are some of the most unique on the East Coast, and a trip to Hobcaw Barony will give you a new respect for our amazing tidal waters. The foundation’s primary mission is to conserve the land’s unique natural and cultural resources for research and
education. Discover all 16,000 acres of history and ecology by reserving your spot on one (or more) of their many illuminating tours. Step back in time to Hopsewee Plantation on the North Santee River and experience life on a typical low country rice plantation in the 18th century. The Rice Museum on Front Street in Georgetown is located in the historic clock tower and explores the area’s fascinating rice culture. The Georgetown County Museum highlights nearly 300 years of local culture, and The Kaminski House, built

in the late 1700s, features a large collection of fine antiques and still has many of the original floors and moldings. In Conway, learn about Horry County history at The Horry County Museum, and while you’re visiting this historic riverfront city, take a walking tour and learn more about our county seat. Be sure to explore the local art scene in Conway. The downtown area has wonderful galleries and events throughout the year. An afternoon or evening enjoying a cultural arts performance is a pleasure to be savored. Coastal Carolina University in Conway has a full calendar of events from September through May.
Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum
In fall and winter, The Franklin G. Burroughs and Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, an off-the-beaten-path treasure of Myrtle Beach hosts special exhibits and events, as well as fascinating permanent collections. Maybe theater arts are your favorite? Community theaters along the Grand Strand produce quality plays and musicals. The Strand Theatre in Georgetown and Theatre of the Republic in Conway produce dynamic shows and use their “dark” nights to show classic and independent films.
Enjoy the Grand Strand’s cultural arts!
