PORT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING Baku, Azerbaijan

Home to 6,500 square meters of trade operations, engineering and customs offices, as well as training facilities for the port personnel, The Port Administration Building functions as the brain of the Alyat International Port. The visual and physical connection to the working quays is critical to the efficiency of the building’s design. A control tower atop the building enables 360 degree monitoring of the international port, while circulation paths provide efficient access to the operation points for the port’s personnel on the ground. Oriented to the direction of trade and conceptually sculpted by the dynamic forces of nature on the site, The Port Administration Building is designed to be a catalyst for international exchange. The movement of the wind, which clearly manifests itself in the form of the surrounding hills and within waves of the Caspian Sea inspired the sweeping form of the design. A central atrium helps to deconstruct the massing and creates a threshold through which currents of ideas, goods, and people flow. With its sculptural form, the Administration Building attempts to become an iconic and functional centerpiece within the Alyat International Port, welcoming the arriving vessels into the new commercial port and Azerbaijan.

PORTFOLIO STRATA PROJECTS

GATEWAY Baku, Azerbaijan

This iconic structure for an International Port, with an area of 6,500 square meters, is primarily comprised of trade operation, engineering and customs offices, as well as training facilities for port personnel. The building functions as the ‘brain’ of the port. The visual and physical connection with the working quays is a critical aspect for the functionality of the design. The control tower at the top of the building has 360 view monitoring the international port operations. The circulation paths for the personnel in and out of the building are organized to establish efficient access to the operation points. In the most general sense, since the movement at the port is the very reason of why and how this building should become, we thought of the movement in terms of its continuity and connectedness at a larger context in which the port belongs. We projected that the new port will be creating new trading routes. The direction of these extended routes could be redrawn on the site to create the basis of the planning. Since the port will be generating these new commercial lines, the lines reciprocates by generating the site lines of the administration building to complete the continuum of movement.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SITE 5809 Kagithane, Istanbul, Turkey

Rolling hills and monumental forms comprise a diverse landscape around the site. Situated atop a vast and sloping ground plane, this project incorporates both the flowing and static elements of its surroundings. Two distinct towers are placed atop a sweeping plinth of retail, which is stretched along the base of the building at street level. A dynamic striped GFRC faรงade wraps up around the two towers. As lateral bands undulate in and out, they become occupied by planters, balconies, and views. The strong horizontality of this composition helps balance and contrast the verticality of the expressive staircases.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SITE 5811 Kagithane, Istanbul, Turkey

This mixed-use project brings a modern-industrial, New Yorkwarehouse aesthetic to the Kagithane, Istanbul area. Two opposing volumes are organized on top of a storefront facade which is pulled laterally across the base of the building. Framed in exposed concrete, these volumes pivot to create a dynamic faรงade, accented by two window types as well as interspersed voids where outdoor public gatherings can occur. The layout of the building is efficiently designed around the core, which contains the circulation space and serves as a spine around which the residential volumes hang. Clad in a rich corrugated metal, the staircases become an expressive element which both interrupts and highlights the framed facades.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SITE 6601 Kagithane, Istanbul, Turkey

The starting point of the project is a traditional residential block in an urban renewal area of Kagithane, Istanbul. The building is comprised of four distinct volumes that appear to hover atop a transparent and active base. Situated atop a rolling hill, the building volumes move across the landscape in response to the topography beneath. The residential tower consists of framed volumes which hang gracefully off of the core, which intermittently reveals itself between the residential program. As the frames rotate, they present unique window typologies, textures, and composition, giving the building a dynamic facade on top of a simple, elegant form. Each apartment designed for ample natural daylight and beautiful views onto the park below.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SITE 7666 Kagithane, Istanbul, Turkey

Inspired by the rolling hills in the area, two main volumes appear to be suspended asymmetrically off of the core. Framing and highlighting drove the formal concept of the project. Differentiated by two strong planes which define its orientation, the active core provides a both a sculptural and structural base, off of which the residential program hangs. Encased in extruded concrete frames, the main volumes offer two complementary and contrasting facades, which are articulated by unique compositions and typologies of windows, balconies, and planted surfaces.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SITE 6242 Kagithane, Istanbul, Turkey

Inspired by the rich hues of the iconic Istanbul sunsets, the residential project incorporates beautiful ombre tones into the angular mid-rise tower. The program incorporates various sized apartments as well as retail space located at the base of the building. Sandwiching the core, two narrow volumes appear to hover above the transparent base of the building. Each tower's distinct orientation is reinforced by mirrored planes, which offer contrasting canvases for the composition of punched and cased windows. Creating further differentiation between the two volumes, the core pulls out to interrupt the facade and create a thin corten steel reveal between the opposing frames.

MODULAR HOMES Palo Alto, CA

Cost and practicality traditionally drive modular home construction. This project strives to inject architectural rigor and richness into the dearth of generic and mainstream prefabricated housing. Concept design is underway for luxury two to three bedroom modular homes. Vaulted roofs, lofted levels, and open floor plans create uninterrupted spacious zones within the homes. Thoughtful application of natural materials and built-in furniture helps differentiate spaces and movement within the homes.

PORTFOLIO STRATA PROJECTS

AMPHITHEATRE Brooklyn, NY

Purposed as part of a master plan for a park and public space, the Amphitheatre would replace the current concert and event field with a unique iconic space. The overall design is integrated within the landscape and takes full advantage of its environment. Both the roof structure and the seating platforms are embedded within the landscape in such a way that it reveals itself as an oasis within the park. The roof structure acts as a unifying device, carrying acoustic reflecting and absorbing panels, lighting elements and audio equipment. The asymmetric shape of the structure amplifies the acoustic and light towards the desired areas of the field where seating occurs on both lawn and wooden seats (3500 seating). Aside from its simple function, the roof structure can adapt the space to meet the needs of an acoustic space; suspended acoustic panels can be re-positioned, and the vertical acoustic panels on the seating sides rotate in order to enclose the space or vent the acoustic energy towards the lawn seating area.
