Plant Power: Cadets help plant over 900 trees at school

Strathallan School is on course to plant over 1,200 trees this year and Army Cadets from Strathallan’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) have been getting their hands dirty, helping to plant over 925 native species of trees since January.

Working towards their CCF Community Engagement Award as well as a John Muir Award, the cadets in conjunction with the School’s Estates & Grounds team, have ensured that the school is well on target to exceed the anticipated number of trees planted.

Cadets such as Shannon P in Third Form have helped plant over 525 native trees around school and potted a further 250 trees ready to be planted in October. The School’s Estates & Grounds team have planted a further 400 trees in key areas to encourage re-naturalisation and growth around the Perthshire School campus.

Their combined efforts have helped create biodiverse copses around parts of the 53 acres dedicated to rewilding through the Northwoods Rewilding Project which Strathallan is partnered with through Scotland: The Big Picture.

When asked why she felt it was important, Shannon said, “Personally I feel that planting trees around school is key in saving our environment and keeping our ecosystem as healthy as possible. By planting native trees we provide essential food and shelter for all the wildlife in school and keep it clean and green. It also gives students like me who have planted some of these trees a legacy at school as hopefully they will survive for hundreds of years and I hope to come back and see them flourish long after I leave.”

Mr Leslie Kent, Biology Teacher who leads John Muir Award at Strathallan said, “I’m immensely proud of our pupils and how quickly they’ve got involved and wanted to help plant trees. If a mature tree absorbs around 10-40kg of carbon per year and assuming 80% of the trees survive, just planting 1000 trees would eventually be absorbing 8,000-32,000kg of carbon a year. That’s the equivalent of 20,000-80,000 miles travelled in a standard petrol car. Planting native trees is definitely to be encouraged in all schools, parks and gardens.”

Rachel called up for Scottish Hockey Squad for 8 Nations Tournament

Recent Strathallan School graduate, Rachel Fagerson, has been selected to represent Scotland in the prestigious 8 Nations Tournament with the Scottish Hockey Aspiring Girls Squad in Granada.

This exciting news came during her final week at Strathallan School, capping off her school career on a high note.

Rachel, who has been playing hockey since the age of eight, expressed her joy and pride at being chosen for the U18 team following her selection for the U17 team last year.

She said, "Getting the call-up for the U18 team after my selection for U17 last year is a great feeling. Knowing that I can play for Scotland makes me so proud. I hope we can give it our all and enjoy every match."

Gill Green, Director of Hockey at Strathallan, praised Rachel's dedication and positive attitude. "Well-deserved selection for Rachel with all her hard work and positive attitude. We wish her and the Scotland squad all the very best for Granada," Green commented.

Strathallan School to launch two new Sport Academies

Tennis and Swimming academies will join Rugby and Shooting at the leading Perthshire School in September

Strathallan School proudly announces the launch of new Sport Academies in Tennis and Swimming following recent success in both sports. The new Academies will expand and enhance the school’s sports academy provision, which has seen prodigious success with its existing Rugby and Shooting academy programmes.

The school has enjoyed success in both sports over the most recent academic session, with two championship titles earned in the 2024 Scottish Schools Tennis Championships as well as preparations for pupils to take part in the European Juniors Swimming Competition. Strathallan’s sports academies offer an enhanced programme to provide the resources and see the potential in each student, giving young athletes the drive to succeed from the youngest years upwards. Strathallan’s extensive indoor and outdoor facilities allow all-year-round training for talented young players.

The new Tennis Academy programme will allow players to progress from beginner to district, through to regional and national levels, helping pupils to develop their tennis as a main priority as well as building up skills for an allround, player-centred approach. Lead by Tommy Ogilvie, with opportunities to play at least once a week, over all three terms, as well as open drop-in sessions for activities that specifically focus on developing skills while still having fun, the Tennis Academy offers the chance to become a part of development groups, and for performance players competing at county, regional or national levels.

Under the guidance of Elaine Johnston, the new Swimming Academy offers a programme unlike any other in Scotland, offering Swimming scholarships to day and boarding pupils. Talented swimmers will benefit from expert guidance, support and encouragement to maximise opportunities, allowing them to release their full potential in the pool.

Record-breaking Swimming Captain, Evan D, who was recently selected for the European Junior Swimming Championships in Vilnius, has seen success has had an immense amount of success over the past few years, including at the Youth Commonwealth Games as well as the European Youth Olympics in which he won Individual Bronze Medals. Evan follows keenly in the wake of Strathallian Duncan Scott, who made history after winning four Olympic medals in Tokyo, in 2020, more than any other British athlete has won at a single Olympic Games. Scott now remains Great Britain's most decorated swimmer in the history of the Olympics.

Strathallan's Director of Sport Mr Jim Thompson said "I am delighted with the formation of the new Swimming and Tennis academies after seeing continuous progress in these sports under the guidance of Elaine Johnston and Tommy Ogilvie. Our Rugby and Shooting academies have progressed fantastically well since they were launched and I am now looking forward to welcoming new pupils as well as supporting current pupils at the school, to be part of these new academy programmes."

Speech Day 2024

We were delighted to welcome our pupils, parents, staff and honoured guests to Strathallan to celebrate our amazing community.

Huge thanks to former pupil Charlie Guest, who gave us a stirring speech about perseverance and the mountains we can climb when we climb them together.

Strathallan Shortlisted for Sustainability in Boarding Award

We are thrilled to announce that Strathallan School has been selected as a finalist for the new Sustainability in Boarding Award in this year’s Boarding Schools’ Association Supporting Excellence Awards 2024.

New for 2024, this award recognises the efforts made by boarding schools to make a meaningful and positive environmental impact both in school and within the local community.

Strathallan School’s nomination for this presitigous award reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship within our community. This includes: pupils presenting their sustainability plans with COP28, rewilding and renaturalising large parts of campus, planting over 400+ trees of native Scottish species to encourage greater bio-diversity, reducing waste in our Dining Hall and becoming a home for rescued hedgehogs.

Cricket Coach

As the school year comes to a close, so too does a remarkable innings for Iain Philip, our longstanding cricket coach.

Known by many as Philpy, Iain has been a fixture at Strathallan since 1987. He began part-time, coaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays, before transitioning to a full-time role in the 1990s.

After retiring from playing and moving back to Perth, Australia, where he lives, Iain initially stopped his commute back to Forgandenny. However, in 2009, he was invited back for what was meant to be a one-season stint, and to our delight, he has continued to help coach ever since.

In total, Iain has dedicated 24 summers to Strathallan, cultivating a deep affection and respect for the school and everyone involved in its cricket program, which as grown substantially over the years.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Iain for his contribution to Cricket at Strathallan and wish him all the best in his retirement.

Team GB selection for Strathallan Pentathlete Jacob

Strathallan School student Jacob H said he is over the moon to be selected to represent Great Britain in the upcoming European U17 Pentathlon Championships, taking place in Ankara, Turkey this July.

The Perthshire pupil said he was beyond thrilled after his hard work to bounce back from a serious injury in 2023.

He said, “After last year and the disappointment of not being selected due to my injury I knew I had to work hard over the winter. After the competition in Bath a few months ago, I knew I competed well and gave it my best shot. Once the email came through, I was over the moon. I’ve had a lot of obstacles and exams. I’m just glad my perseverance to overcome has shone through.”

Jacob overcame his setback in 2023 to win the Royal Windsor Horse Show Tetrathlon in June last year and has been focused on his training over the winter ever since.

Jacob said he fell into Pentathlon by accident with his brother Blake, having both started their passion for pentathlon on horseback before the equestrian element was removed from Modern Pentathlon in November 2021.

The brothers last competed together in the summer of 2022 at the World and European Laster-Run Championships before Blake left Strathallan for the University of Edinburgh.

“I’ve always been inspired by my brother, Blake and his support at home and when he was at school has pushed me to want to go further.”

Looking ahead to Ankara, Jacob added, “As an outcome, getting to the final would be great, I feel ready to give it everything.”

Jim Thompson, Director of Sport at Strathallan, said, "Huge congratulations to Jacob on his selection for Team GB at the U17 European Championships. We have no doubt he will represent Great Britain and Strathallan with distinction in Ankara. Good luck, Jacob."

Strathallan Prep Pupils sprint to success in triple Cross Country triumph

In the whirlwind of cross-country competition, four Strathallan Prep School pupils have ran their way to success, clinching three team victories in a row.

Led by Prep Captain of Sports Will L, alongside teammates Sebastian D, Findlay B, and Charlie C, the team conquered the Belhaven Cross Country, smashed the Merchiston Cross Country Relays, and soared to triumph in the SSAA Scottish Primary Schools Cross Country Championships.

They were named overall P7 Champions out of hundreds of school-age athletes taking part in the SSAA Scottish Primary Schools Championships and were joined on the podium by our U14 Girls, Anna G, Alia D, Anna H and Annabel A, who finished third in the SSAA Senior Schools Cross Country Championships.

When asked about their incredible run of success, Will L said, "It’s been a great Cross Country season for us this year. We’ve all trained hard and our hard work paid off and gave us some great results which we are all really proud off. I’ve really enjoyed running with my team mates in SPS and will miss it next year when I move up to the senior school."

Reflecting on their success, Director of Sport Jim Thompson said, "The boys have put in countless hours of hard work, both on and off the track. It's truly rewarding to see their efforts pay off in such a remarkable way across three major events."

Joshua secures British and Scottish Fencing crowns

In May, Strathallan School student Joshua B added to his impressive trophy cabinet by becoming the U16 British Champion at the British Fencing Youth Championships in Sheffield.

Less than a month later, he followed up this achievement by retaining his title as the Scottish Schools U16 Sabre Champion for the second year in a row.

After first picking up a sabre at Salle Ossian Fencing Club at the age of 8, the Perthshire pupil has represented Scotland and Great Britain at numerous international events over the last nine years, most recently at the World Cadet Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Reflecting on his recent achievements, Joshua said, “The Scottish Schools Championships were really good. I had a great start and gave it my all right from the beginning. The British Championships were great too. I was confident, went in with a good attitude, and did my best. Now I’m focused on training as much as I can for the World Championships next year.”

As a Fencing Scholar at Strathallan School, Joshua trains five times a week at Salle Ossian in Perth, representing both his club and school on piste. Joshua holds titles as the U15 and U20 Scottish Fencing Champion and was one of two Salle Ossian fencers selected for the World Cadet Championships in Saudi Arabia, a significant achievement given that only three GB fencers are chosen each year.

“The highlight of my year was definitely being chosen to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in Riyadh. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best competitions I’ve ever had,” Joshua shared.

“Results-wise, the European Championships in Italy earlier this year made me fully believe in myself and back myself when it comes to my training and focus.”

Jim Thompson, Director of Sport at Strathallan School, praised Joshua's accomplishments, stating, "Joshua's outstanding achievements reflect his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. We are incredibly proud of his remarkable journey and can't wait to see what he does next."

Introducing our new Captains & Vice-Captains of School

We are delighted to announce this year’s Captains of School: Eve B and Fergus T, who will be joined by Vice-Captains Louise B and Constantin B in their leadership roles.

Together with our new school authority, they will help lead our school in the upcoming academic session.

We caught up with them before they headed off for a welldeserved summer holiday.

Speaking of the year ahead, Fergus said, “I’m really excited to give back to the school that has given me so much. I want to build on our strong sense of community here and make Strathallan even more inclusive and welcoming.”

Eve added, “It makes me feel very proud and I’m glad to be leading such a great school. I hope to give all our pupils a voice.”

When asked what it means to be Vice-Captain, Louise said, “It’s really exciting. It’s a big chance to make the changes we want to see in the school, hear what my peers are saying, and bring things forward.”

Constantin shared, “It feels great. It’s a massive opportunity to represent the student body and prepare the school for the future. I’m thrilled to be part of that.”

Good luck in your new roles! We can’t wait to see what you achieve in the new school year.

Strathallan Netball team crowned National Champions

Strathallan Netball U14 Team were named S2 National Champions after a 32-17 victory over North Berwick High School in the Scottish Schools Cup Final.

The win not only secured the Perthshire team as the best under 14 squad in the country but brought an end to the second unbeaten season in a row for our U14 players, who won all 8 fixtures in 2022/23 and all 11 fixtures in 2023/34, scoring an incredible 365 goals during this season alone.

Co-Captain Harriet R was named Player of the Match and alongside her Co-Captain Anna H, the pair led the team to a resounding success at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Harriet said, “Winning was an incredible experience and a dream come true, all are hard work and determination had paid off and it felt amazing to win with such a dedicated team full of friends.

“Winning the Cup final made me feel proud not only of myself but all my friends who are a part of the team. It was also a relief because we had been training very hard and I was very nervous for the final. Looking ahead, I would love for us to retain the title for the third year in a row and remain undefeated. A personal goal for me is to play at a national level.”

Anna added, “Winning was such an amazing feeling, it made me so happy knowing that all our hard work paid off. Our team definitely deserved it and this season has brought us so much closer together. But winning wasn’t just the final score it also showed all the teamwork and determination we have put into this year. Our next goal is to inspire future netballers and keep our title as Scottish C Champions.”

Head of Netball at Strathallan, Louise Waugh, said, “This team have shown a huge amount of dedication and teamwork. Players have worked hard to create connections on the court and show control and composure in critical games.”

“They are always on time to training, supporting each other to be the best they can. There have been a few positional changes on the team and it has worked well and I am excited for the next chapter on their journey.”

Team Coach, Miss Wardlaw added, “A fantastic season for the U14A Netball Team, to go unbeaten and top it all off by being crowned Scottish Champions. They have worked relentlessly to improve their skills and tactics, which showed in the final. I was delighted to work with the girls and congratulations to them on their achievements this season.”

Top shot Molly guns for gold at British Shotgun Series

Strathallan School pupil Molly H shot to top place at the British Shotgun Series in Cambridge earlier this month, setting a new Scottish Record in the process.

In a final showdown of the top six shots, Molly clinched first place, earning her a GB qualification spot before her exams begin at school.

Reflecting on her achievement, Molly said, “It was my first ever Olympic Trap qualification after being selected for the development squads alongside Alasdair in November. It was nerve-wracking competing against unfamiliar faces, but winning gold in England felt amazing."

Molly, who gets to train several times a week at Strathallan Shooting Academy’s purpose-built shooting range, became the first Scottish woman to win the Welsh Junior Open in 2022 and has been on top form since picking up shooting in 2020.

Harriet Nets Three National Titles in a Single Season

Strathallan School pupil Harriet R has clinched three national netball titles this season.

In June, she helped Perth & Kinross District Netball secure the Scottish Youth Cup, completing a trio of victories at Club, District and School levels.

Co-Captain of Strathallan’s U14 squad, Harriet has helped the School team go unbeaten twice in the Scottish Schools Cup, most recently being named Player of the Match after a thrilling 32-17 final against North Berwick High School at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Speaking of her success, Harriet shared, “I’m thrilled to have played my part, and it’s been fantastic getting to play with the different teams and variations at Club, District, and School levels.”

Harriet began playing netball in Year 4 (P3) and has been a key player progressing through Strathallan’s Netball squads ever since.

“My goal is to represent Scotland, so training with all my clubs gives me a huge sense of pride and helps me improve,” she added.

Louise Waugh, Head of Netball at Strathallan, commended Harriet’s accomplishments, highlighting her hard work and composure under pressure.

“I am delighted for Harriet this year. She has worked hard to improve her skills and has maintained calm under pressure. She is a fantastic player and is able to play a variety of positions, making her a critical member of our school netball team. I look forward to her continued success and hopefully national representation in the future.”

Carol Harvey, Director of Development at Netball Scotland, also praised Harriet’s season, emphasizing the broader significance of her success.

“Congratulations to Harriet on a fantastic season! Her dedication and success highlight the importance of girls engaging in sport, building confidence, and developing essential life skills.”

Andrew Butchart

We were delighted to welcome Olympics Long-Distance Runner Andrew Butchart to Strathallan.

Despite being in recovery, the Team GB athlete gave up his time to take some of our student-athletes through Olympic-level drills on Big Acre and then shared insights and answered lots of great questions about his own inspiring journey to become the Scottish Record-Holder in the 3000, 5000 and 10,000m events and Park Run Record Holder.

We are immensely grateful to Andrew for his guidance and words of wisdom for both our students and staff!

Touch Rugby Talents Selected to Represent Scotland at European Championships

Strathallan School students Conor F and Fergus O-L have been chosen to represent Scotland in the Mixed U18s division at the European Youth Touch Championships.

The European Youth Touch Championships are scheduled to take place in Vichy, France, from 15th to 18th August and will see Connor and Fergus compete against teams from Ireland, Wales, Cayman Islands, England, Italy and Belgium.

Touch Rugby is a fast-paced, six-a-side variation of the game with two twenty-minute halves.

Speaking of his selection, Conor said, “I’m honoured to be selected. I think being selected for this summer gives us both an incredible opportunity to showcase our skills outside of the UK. I’ve been playing for 10 years and I love the community rugby creates.”

Adding his thoughts, Fergus said, “It’s a huge honour to represent my country and it has been a goal of mine to represent Scotland internationally. Touch Rugby is up and coming, it’s very fast, a lot faster than fifteens and requires a lot of new skills and moves.”

Calum Anderson, Director of the Scottish Touch Rugby Youth Academy, said, “Connor and Fergus’s selection for this event is a testament to their skill, dedication, and commitment to the sport of touch rugby.”

Andrew Henderson, Director of Strathallan’s Rugby Academy said, “It’s such a great honour for the boys to be selected to represent Scotland at the tournament in France. We have had former pupils selected in the past and I know from their experiences how fast and demanding the game of touch is. It is also highly tactical so not as straightforward as people might think. We wish both boys the very best in France and hope they have a fantastic time.”

Evan aims to make waves at European Juniors

Captain of Swimming at Strathallan, Evan is set to make his mark at the upcoming European Junior Swimming Championships in Vilnius at the start of July.

The Perthshire pupil is one of five Scottish swimmers to be selected for the five-day event, which serves as a crucial stepping stone for emerging athletes aiming for success on the senior European and world stages.

Captain of Swimming at Strathallan, Evan is one of 30 GB swimmers looking for success in the Lithuanian Capital.

Speaking of his selection, Evan said, “It’s an honour to have been selected for the third year in a row. It’s a step up, as it's U18 rather than 16 and under. I’m excited to get more experience under my belt and race internationally again.”

With aspirations of reaching finals and embracing the heightened competition, Evan said he sees this as an opportunity to further hone his skills in the pool.

The 17-year-old from Forgandenny has been on top form over the last two years, training at Strathallan with Director of Swimming Elaine Johnston. He has his sights set on the British Summer Championships at the end of July, where he will compete against the top 28 swimmers in Britain.

Evan, who represented both Team Scotland and Team GB last year, swam again for Team GB at the Ontario Junior International earlier this year and won the 400IM B Junior Final at the Speedo British Swimming Championships in London last month.

In November at the Scottish National Short Course Championships, Evan broke a ten-year-old Scottish Junior Record in the 200m freestyle, set in 2013 by former Strathallan student and Great Britain’s most decorated swimmer, Duncan Scott.

Strathallan Highland Dancer flings to first place at Scottish Schools

Competition

Strathallan School pupil Erica M showcased her Highland Dancing talent at the 2024 Scottish Schools CCF Annual Highland Dance Competition earlier this month.

Competing for Strathallan for the first time, Erica secured an impressive six out of seven first-place finishes and clinched the coveted Special Fling Trophy, emerging as the overall winner in her section at the competition held at Merchiston Castle School.

Reflecting on her achievements, Erica said, “I was so chuffed to come first because it’s the first time I’ve ever danced for Strathallan and the competition was really strong. All the dancers were lovely.”

Despite the high level of competition, which was organised and judged by the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing, Erica’s hard work and dedication shone through.

Erica, who began dancing at the age of three and took up Highland Dancing at five, said dancing had always been there for her.

She added, “I enjoy it because I’ve always danced with friends and I associate dancing with fun. Any younger pupils interested in Highland Dancing or any dancing go for it. It keeps you fit, it makes you part of something bigger. It’s exciting and exhilarating when you have an audience, whether on a stage or in a competition. Highland Dancing gives you a feeling of doing something for your country too, and you might get the chance to represent your country all over the world.”

Whilst at School, Erica trains under the guidance of Miss Chloe Roome, Highland Dancing and History teacher at Strathallan, and attends Fiona Henderson’s School of Dance when at home in the Borders.

Miss Roome commended Erica’s dedication, stating, “Erica has worked very hard in practice sessions to get her dances up to top standard. Hard work has paid off, and I commend Erica for always putting in 100% and being receptive to feedback. Well done, Erica!”

Highland Dancing is one of the many Scottish culture subjects on offer at Strathallan since the launch of the Department of Traditional Music & Scottish Culture in September 2021. Led by former Red Hot Chilli Piper, Craig Muirhead, the department offers exciting opportunities for students to learn about and immerse themselves in Scottish Culture.

Our First Form Art class has delved into the fascinating concept of biomimicry this term, exploring how artists, architects, and designers draw inspiration from the natural world.

They began with initial drawings of plant seed pods, progressing to the study of pattern-making and contrasts of light and dark. This journey culminated in the creation of three-dimensional paper structures.

Mr Tod said, "I have been thoroughly impressed by how each pupil has discovered their unique direction, producing personal and inventive outcomes. Their playful approach to drawing, collage, and sculptural research has been particularly noteworthy and a true highlight of this project."

Second Form Scientists

Scientists from Second Form visited Heriot-Watt University to become forensic scientists for the day! They donned their metaphorical detective hats to unravel the mysteries of chemical compounds through hands-on experiments and analytical challenges.

The students learned how chemical analysis aids in crime scene investigation, from analysing fibres under the microscope to using chemical reactions to identify unknown substances.

The CSI Chemistry Event sparked curiosity, fostered collaboration, and inspired a new generation of chemists to pursue careers in forensic science, research, and beyond. And to top a great day off our team placed third in the competition! Well done to Amy M, Gregory B, James D-H and Eloise R.

Ready, set, jam

As part of the Futures Programme, all of our Lower Sixth Form students are engaging in a variety of activities to develop essential personal and work-based skills.

The first challenge of the week, Enterprise Day demanded creativity, team-work and excellent pitching skills to support the culinary skills of each team’s chef; as groups of pupils rushed to develop a new concept for Mackays preserve portfolio.

The most creative jam was awarded to a Mackay’s Sabor Da Sol tropical jam, which included mango, pineapple, guava, cantaloupe and strawberries to give the ‘flavour of the sun!’

The most flavoursome award went to Mackay’s Mimosa Raspberry Preserve, which included Raspberry, Prosecco and Orange flavouring

The best overall jam was awarded to a team who invented the ‘Perfect for Porridge’ Scottish Blueberry and Apple Preserve, with strong visuals, brand identity and concise customer information.

Well done to all our chefs, design teams and marketers.

Piping

Castle Pipers achieve historic Scottish Bagpipe Qualifications

Germany's Castle Pipers have reached a significant milestone in their piping journey, with ten members of their Pipe Band achieving top marks in their SCQF Grade 2 and 4 Scottish Bagpipes examinations thanks to an innovative collaboration with Strathallan School.

Under the expert tutelage of Strathallan School Pipe Major Josh Fraser, part of the School’s Department of Traditional Music and Scottish Culture, the Castle Pipers dedicated themselves to ten weekends of online study and two intensive weekends of in-person training, culminating in ten members receiving top marks in their grades earlier this month.

Reflecting on the journey, Josh said, “I am extremely proud of all of the students from The Castle Pipers who successfully passed their PDQB assessments. It has been an amazing experience teaching this qualification to such a determined and enthusiastic group of people.

“It is amazing that we have managed to build such a great connection with a Pipe Band in Germany and help them learn more about our national instrument. Thank you to Thomas Zoller and The National Piping Centre for their help facilitating the examinations and thank you to Lothar and Barbara Beckers for helping to bring this partnership together. We are looking forward to many more exciting opportunities with The Castle Pipers.”

Set at SCQF levels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, the National Progression Award (NPA) in Scottish Bagpipes provides a progression route for candidates who are learning to play the bagpipes, taking them from beginner stages to an advanced level. This practicalbased qualification covers the knowledge pipers need for performing in Scottish pipe bands and offers a consistent approach to the study of bagpipes in Scotland and internationally.

Barbara Beckers-Lingener, who achieved Level 4 alongside her husband Dr Lothar Beckers, said the for a large part of the band they are probably the first pipers in Germany, especially the western part of the country, to achieve the qualification and it sets a high-quality standard for the growing Castle Pipers band, already well respected in Germany and internationally.

Speaking of their success, Barbara, said, “We as a band are incredibly proud to have the opportunity to develop our bagpiping skills with the SCQF exams, initiated by Constantin who joined Strathallan School in 2022. We have thoroughly enjoyed the time we have spent with Josh Fraser, who has supported us both as a friend and a teacher. We believe that with the standard of bagpiping we have achieved, we are now able to perform our repertoire with even more professionalism and confidence, from small family gigs to large stages. We now look forward to maintaining the strong partnership between the Castle Pipers and Strathallan School.”

It’s braw in Barbados!

Our pipers had a phenomenal time at the Barbados Celtic Festival, catching up with old friends and making new memories together.

They’ve been gigging at Worthing Square, Speightstown and Harbour Lights, had a detox day on catamaran in the Caribbean Sea and caught up with Strathallian and friend Ben Muir who is now a full time teacher and performer with the six piece trad band Falasgair.

Outstanding Performance by Rory M!

Congratulations to Piper Rory M who had a phenomenal weekend at the Highland Games!

On Saturday, July 20th, at the Tomintoul Highland Games, Rory mastered the Solo Piping competition, winning both the U18 Piobaireachd and U18 Light Music, and claiming the Junior Overall title.

Rory's winning streak continued on Sunday at the Stonehaven Highland Games, achieving another clean sweep!

This is a fantastic accomplishment, Rory! Well done!

Alfie P

Massive congratulations to Alfie P who placed Second in the European Solo Drumming Championships at Lochgelly High School. Well done, Alfie!

Music

Head Man's Music

At Head Man’s Music, Strathallan student Constantin B made his debut as a conductor, leading the orchestra through the exhilarating first movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

Speaking of his experience, he told us, “I was nervous to conduct live for the first time especially with such a challenging piece. But once we started, everything fell into place, and it felt amazing. Being a conductor has always been my childhood dream, and I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”

A huge congratulations to Constantin and thanks to our talented musicians for delivering a phenomenal performance!

Strathallan School hits a high note with launch of in-house record label

Student Maia’s Dream Becomes Reality as Strathallan Studios Empowers Young Musicians to Shine

Strathallan School is excited to launch a new project to nurture young musical talent and bring original work to new audiences around the world. Strathallan Studios’ mission for inspiring original sounds provides creative pupils with access to top quality producers and facilities to record and release their own original material.

Director of Music at Strathallan, Jason McAuley said, “I’m thrilled to announce the launch of Strathallan Studios. Giving our pupils the chance to produce and release their own music is a rare opportunity within a school environment and I am excited to see what our talented musicians create and launch in the near future.”

For Maia B-A, the announcement has helped her to realise a lifelong dream to release her music. Giving particular credit to her music teachers Mr Fraser Christie and Mr Pete Murch who produce the music, as well as being mixed and mastered by Mr Christie, Maia recognises how her transformation into Maia B-A has been a result of the experience and expertise offered to her by the instrumental staff.

Giving a small insight into what she plans to release, Maia describes her music to be a “development of her emotions over a period of time,” demonstrating how it is through the medium of songwriting and producing she manifests her self-expression.

Maia goes on to speak of how the new record label allowed her to collaborate with her friends, something she relished. Helping students to strike a balance across academic studies and extra-curricular hobbies and activities is a goal embodied in the Strathallan’s ethos, and demonstrates the school’s commitment to adapting to students, like Maia, and their interests.

For Maia, the launch of Strathallan Studios has advanced her musical opportunities, allowing her artistic image to be understood, bringing her music to new audiences and breaking out of restrictive genres. She explains how she can be in the Chamber Choir whilst simultaneously release modern music, and she is excited to see how the label will expand the musical opportunity at Strathallan, welcoming students to engage with many genres.

Although Maia did not reveal too much, she spoke of her future plans to take up music full-time, with a few exciting things coming up in the following year. We look forward to seeing what Maia and her fellow musicians do with the introduction of Strathallan Studios, an incredibly exciting addition to the array of opportunities Strathallan has to offer pupils.

National Youth Orchestra

Olwen H took to the stage with the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland - NYOS Development Orchestra, performing a rhythmic, Latin-American inspired program at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday, April 13th.

Recognized as Strathallan's Young Senior Musician of the Year in November, Olwen had recently been invited to join the NYOS Development Orchestra. She had been rehearsing with them all week as they took up residency at Strathallan School during the Easter break.

Reflecting on her week with NYOS, Olwen said, "Joining NYOS and finding my place within their strings section was incredibly rewarding. I've had some amazing insights this week, and I was looking forward to our performance on Saturday."

Performing Arts

Smash hit ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ graces Strathallan Stage

From set design to spine-chilling performances: Little Shop of Horrors: The Musical wows audiences at Strathallan School.

Mrs Irene McFarlane, LAMDA Teacher, reviews the latest production to take centre stage at the School.

A well-deserved standing ovation was bestowed upon the cast, band and crew of Little Shop of Horrors on the final evening of the show. This was Mrs Carr-Bates’ first senior School musical since arriving at Strathallan. And it was, indeed, a stunning success in every respect.

This hugely popular musical, with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, was first staged in New York in May 1992 and has since been performed hundreds of times all around the world. There is also a movie version.

Pupils and staff watched with amazement as the set build gradually took shape over recent weeks. Piece by piece the stage was transformed into a multi-level cityscape of New York, with its crowded streets and skyscrapers. Once again, the School is indebted to Strathallan alumnus, and real-life award-winning architect, Oli Beetschen, for his set and lighting design. The experience must have brought back many memories for Oli because, when Strathallan last put on Little Shop of Horrors, he was a pupil here and had his first experience of being Stage Manager. In this production he was assisted by an extremely competent group of pupils, including fourth formers, building up their skills.

We are fortunate indeed in having so many talented musicians in the School and from among their number, and with a couple of the music staff, Musical Director, Mr Hamilton formed the band. I’m sure everyone appreciated what a difference it made to the show having such excellent live music to accompany the fine performances by the soloists and the whole ensemble.

And then there was the cast! All credit to Mrs Carr-Bates who used her very experienced directorial skills to select performers ideally suited to the roles they were given. In his buttoned cardigan, baggy trousers and slippers, Maximilian E so realistically portrayed the world-weary, Mr Mushnik, the elderly shop owner. Carter R made a perfect Seymour, torn between his conscience and his desperation to please shop assistant, Audrey. Annabel A gave a flawless depiction of Audrey, the abused girlfriend of the all too realistically portrayed sadistic dentist, Orin Scrivello. Kyle F’s Orin would discourage anyone from ever attending a dentist appointment again!

Then, of course, there was Audrey 2, the flesh-eating plant that Seymour cultivated to bring prosperity to the shop and to impress his beloved Audrey 1. Rather than use a puppet for the mature Audrey 2, Mrs Carr-Bates opted to costume Emma K as the plant. Emma’s performance was disturbingly excellent! Even with her face totally covered in green, she was able to portray by facial expression the disturbing reality that this was a plant that would eventually take over the world.

All credit to the choreography provided by Robyn Goodfellow (assisted by Miss Chloe Roome and Eve B), particularly for the group of five girls who were on the stage for much of the time, almost as if in the role of a Greek chorus – Amelie S, Olwen H, Megan A, Evie B and Josie C. The whole ensemble, in fact, gave us an outstanding evening’s entertainment.

The production was an example of great teamwork, from the staff involved, to the stage crew, under Jayden M’s experienced supervision. Sound design was by Paul Smith of Apex Sound. All credit to the sound team under Lisa B, make-up team led by Sophia E, props led by Rebecca J and all those others assisting and building skills for the day when they too can step up and take charge.

It was a colourful and thrilling experience. Well done to everyone involved!

Strathallan Prep School Launches ‘Story Explorers’

Free Storytelling Programme for 3-5 year-olds

Strathallan Prep School proudly announces the launch of Story Explorers, an initiative designed to ignite the imaginations of preschool children through the magic of storytelling and adventure. This immersive storytelling programme, tailored for children aged 3-5, aims to engage young learners in captivating tales set against the backdrop of Strathallan’s lush 153-acre Perthshire campus.

Scheduled for a Saturday morning, with six dates across the academic year, Story Explorers invites young adventurers to embark on a magical journey into the enchanting world of stories. From Gruffalo hunts in the woods to visits to the Three Bears’ house, each session promises a morning filled with adventurous activities and child-led exploration, all carefully crafted to spark creativity and curiosity.

Under the guidance of Strathallan’s Year 1/2 teacher Mrs Rhiannon Gilbert, young adventurers will have the opportunity to bring classic tales to light and learn new skills through hands-on activities from making tea for a tiger to building a logpile house for a fearful Snake.

“At Strathallan Prep School, we recognize the impact storytelling can have on young minds,” says Mrs Gilbert. “Through Story Explorers, we aim to spark a sense of wonder and curiosity in our young learners to inspire a lifelong love for learning and reading.”

The heart of Story Explorers lies in its commitment to community and to making literacy accessible to all. The programme is free of charge and open to any child aged 3-5 within the local community.

“We are dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for children to explore, learn, and grow,” remarked Mrs Gilbert. “By offering Story Explorers as a free programme, we hope to empower families to connect with literature and nature in meaningful ways.”

Young Explorers will have the opportunity to collect special book badges, commemorating their journey through stories and the friendships made along the way. The upcoming session, scheduled for 9am Saturday 11th May, will feature “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” and invites children to step into the pages of this beloved tale and embark on a magical adventure. Families are encouraged to register online to secure their child’s place in this adventure.

They then showcased their impressive new talents under the big top for everyone to see!

Our Year 5 pupils were excited to meet new friends on the other side of the globe, telling them all about life in Scotland and at Strathallan, and learning about life for their counterparts at SUSTECH No.1 Primary School in China.

This memorable experience - made possible through an innovative Friendship School exchange - has seen our Year 5s presenting on their daily adventures, whilst their new friends in China shared their own stories about life in various Chinese cities. Pop quizzes added another layer of excitement as both groups of children shared and learned from each others' cultures

Big round of applause to Prep pupils Philippa W, Kate M, Scarlett O, and Paige M for 'banding' together to fight Cancer with a bracelet initiative, which they came up with themselves.

By creating bracelets and selling them around the Prep and Senior Schools for a £1 donation, the four friends have raised over £120 for Cancer Research UK.

Well done girls!

“You

may be moving on, but you will always have a home at the Prep School.”

Congratulations to our Prep School Class of 2024 as they prepare to embark on new adventures at our Senior School and beyond.

Following a heartfelt Leavers’ Service led by Rev. Jonny Wylie, our outgoing Second Form were honoured with memory books and Prep School pin badges. The celebration was made even more special with a beautiful song performed by our Prep Voice Choir from the younger years.

The memory books are filled with empty pages for the pupils to collect names, memories and best wishes this week as they look forward to what their bright futures hold.

We were thrilled to welcome Dr Callum Leese, Clinical Support Fellow for Physical Activity at the Royal College of General Practitioners, to assembly to discuss the significance of exercise for good mental well-being with our younger pupils.

Now a GP Trainee and researcher at the University of Dundee, Dr Leese shared his insights with our Prep pupils, highlighting the importance of cultivating healthy habits.

Year 5 shared their knowledge of deforestation and its farreaching effects with Year 1 & 2, taking them through our forests and discussing the impact humanity can have on the planet.

They passionately shared everything they know about environmental conservation including their own experiences planting trees around campus.

Into the Woods

Before the end of term, students from Years 1 to Second Form in the Prep School captivated parents, senior pupils, and staff with a mesmerizing interactive performing arts display in the valley.

The students voluntarily crafted and devised the show, during which they invited guests to journey through the forest, encountering flashes of beloved fairy tales along the way.

Double crown delight at Lathallan 7s!

Good luck to our Captain of School, Joe T and former pupil Callum Beckett who have been called up for Edinburgh Rugby Super Series squad ahead of the Battle of the Capital against Watsonians.

Joe, who helped Team Scotland win Gold in Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Youth Games, said he was thrilled to be selected for Edinburgh Rugby.

“Men’s rugby is an entirely different game, I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Joe will join former pupil Callum Beckett on the bench for the capital’s side. Callum, who left Strathallan in 2021, has had his own epic journey to the Super Series. After suffering a severe injury, the young kicker bounced back and through intense rehab helped the Currie Chieftains win the Men’s Premiership 2023/24 in his first season back to the game.

Speaking of his selection to the Super Series, Callum told us, “It’s super satisfying knowing that I’m back to an even better level than I was at before and that’s all thanks to the support Currie have given me.”

The pair are the latest Strathallan Rugby prodigies to join the Super Series, following in the footsteps of 11 former pupils who faced each other across six teams last year. This year, Cammy Fenton is at No. 2 for Heriot’s Rugby Club, Eric Davey is playing for Stirling Wolves, Alex Thom and current pupil Zac G have been playing for the Boroughmuir Bears, Andy Stirrat has been on the field for the Ayrshire Bulls, Jonny Morris and Murphy Walker have been starting for the Glasgow Warriors and Callum Norrie has been playing for both the Stirling Wolves and Glasgow Warriors.

After a strong XV’s season, the school’s Sevens squads have continued to excel, winning four out of six Sevens tournaments this season, including the Lathallan School, Boroughmuir Rugby, High School of Glasgow and the North Berwick Tens. They have only lost two out of 34 matches played in this Sevens season.

Lewis P ties for first place in Junior Golf Scotland Masters. After two days of competition in driving winds and rain, Strathallan student Lewis P, tied for first in the Junior Golf Scotland Masters in Spey Valley.

Speaking of his success, Lewis said, “Initially I was shocked that I had tied for first as conditions were so tough both days and I’d had a few bad holes particularly on the back 9 on day two. I think everyone struggled. I did well to keep the ball in the fairways and made some really good putts. I’ve been playing consistently better in the last few weeks and I’m really enjoying playing new and more challenging courses.”

Our golfers had an incredible day, with both of our mixed teams finishing in the top 2!

Duke of Edinburgh

Congratulations to Jayden M, Head of Nicol House, who received his well-deserved Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at Buckingham Palace.

Reflecting on his achievement, Jayden said, "Celebrating the completion of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at Buckingham Palace was an incredible experience. It was the perfect way to commemorate the hard work that I’ve put in since starting my journey with the Bronze Award four years ago. I have learnt so many new skills, and would highly recommend DofE to all pupils who have the opportunity to."

In the words of Great British Astronaut Tim Peake, who gave a speech at the awards ceremony, "The sky isn’t the limit, it's merely the beginning of a journey filled with infinite possibilities."

Well done, Jayden!

Strathallians

Murphy Walker

We are immensely grateful to former pupil, Scottish Rugby International and Glasgow Warrior, Murphy Walker who gave up his time to come in and speak to our Second Form in the Prep School.

Murphy, who joined Strathallan in First Form, gave a talk on nutrition, sleep, behaviour and mental toughness from his experience as a professional rugby player.

Thank you, Murphy, for your time and motivation.

A huge shout out to Colin Williamson!

We're so proud to see you coaching the Scotland Senior Men at the Home International Regatta on home water at Strathclyde Country Park!

Having represented Scotland as both an athlete and now coach is such an incredible achievement, and we're thrilled to celebrate your 10th season as Head of Rowing at University of Edinburgh Sport.

Here's to many more successful seasons and exciting races!

Rugby Reunion

We were delighted to celebrate the success of seven Scottish Rugby Internationals who all left Strathallan School between 2013 and 2018 at a reunion with former coaches, the Headmaster and Chair of Governors.

Unfortunately, Jamie Ritchie was on duty with Edinburgh Rugby, however, Glasgow Warriors Zander and Matt Fagerson, George Horne, Ollie Smith, Murphy Walker, Leicester Tigers Cameron Henderson and Newcastle Falcons player Murray McCallum all reunited with us at Gleneagles - where we caught up with all their successes on the field, including caps for Scottish Rugby in the Rugby World Cup, and thanked them all their continued support of our community outreach through the Strathallan Rugby Academy, kindly sponsored by Arnold Clark

Andrew Henderson, Director of Strathallan Rugby Academy, said, “What a truly special evening we spent with our former pupils, where we got back together to recognise all their fabulous achievements in rugby. As well as being high-level sportsmen it was so good to see what fantastic people they continue to be, which was demonstrated when a very young fan approached them during dinner to ask if they could provide some autographs it was no issue and the time they spent speaking with the young lad was a real demonstration of the type of people they are.”

Sofapaka F C

Former Pupil Andre Kalama played in the Kenyan Cup Quarter Final, playing for Sofapaka F C.

Ollie Smith

We were delighted to have Megan Petursdottir and former pupil Ollie Smith join us in assembly as they gave a brilliant talk about their charity, Give Blood 4 Good, founded in memory of Ollie’s brother Patrick.

Give Blood 4 Good is on a mission to get as many young people to donate blood as possible. Sharing key facts with our senior students about why donating blood is simple, safe and a rewarding way to give back to society, Megan and Ollie gave us a great overview of what it means to be a GB4G Ambassador and how we can all help.

Whilst on campus, Ollie Smith, who despite recovering from an injury, also generously gave his time to lead a skills session on footwork and speed to our young Rugby Scholars, assisted by senior Academy Players Ollie S and Zac G.

Ollie then shared insights from his professional career in elite sports with our budding Sports Scholars.

Strath Family

Life has a way of bringing the Strath Family together, like when our former Captain of School JB bumped into our Headmaster and his wife Caroline.

Six years after leaving Strathallan for the University of Oxford, JB still carries his trusty school bag on his adventures.

Now a Latin and Classics teacher, he recently caught up with Mr Lauder and Caroline on the Isle of Coll & Tiree ferry.
