rior to 1800, Nappanee was home to the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. In 1830, the first white settlers came to the area and by 1870 there were seven farms in what is now Nappanee. The population was nearly 40. The Coppes Family and Mutschler Brothers provided a way to make a living . . . making cabinets and furniture. This has led to Nappanee being known as the Kitchen Capital of the World! In the last 140+ years, Nappanee has grown to house a diverse and progressive population of over 6,700.

The Gateway to Indiana’s Amish Country
or over 140 years, Nappanee has been synonymous with everything gracious, desirable and enjoyable. We are a tradition you can return to. We invite you to sample the varied charm of our city . . . a friendly city with strong civic pride. Nappanee offers the opportunity to experience Amish culture. Living a simple, quiet life in the country, most of the men work in a factory, in construction or are in business for themselves, while the women tend to daily household tasks. Horses can be seen pulling the machinery that is used to tend the fields and transportation is provided by horse-drawn buggies, bicycles or on foot. In fact, the Amish remain the primary reason tourists travel to Nappanee. The citizens of Nappanee make a concerted effort to respect and preserve the Amish way of life while recognizing the enormous interest of its visitors. We hope you will too! Merchants and townspeople welcome the first-time visitor and repeat visitors to Nappanee with the same hospitality they extend to their long-time neighbors. In Nappanee, parking is always free. Park your car next to the buggies and shop and eat where the locals do. Shopping Nappanee is a satisfying experience from one end of the city to the other. Whether it’s hand made quilts, fine wood products, antiques or country crafts that you wish to see . . . Nappanee has it all!

hile visiting Nappanee be sure to make the Nappanee Center at 302 W. Market Street one of your top destinations. With over 10,000 sq ft. of free Nappanee History at your fingertips, the displays will amaze you. Learn while enjoying a free cup of coffee or tea. Be part of Nappanee’s history as you enter the first jail cell, see Lee Weaver’s NASA and Aerospace display including a prototype space capsule. In the military room, you will find Lt. Col. Todd Beer’s Air Force uniform and information about his time flying Air Force One. Many military items are permanently on display as we are proud of our service men and women. Kitchen cabinets and the history of why we call ourselves the Kitchen Capital of the World are on display as well. And don’t forget to come inside one of the oldest homes in Nappanee that is attached to the Nappanee Center. While you are browsing and need a laugh, look no further than Nappanee with its six nationally known cartoonists - more than any other city per capita can claim. The museum is FREE of charge and is open Monday through Friday 8-5 and Saturday 9-4. It is open Sundays 1-4 June through September. Come in today and see what discoveries you can make inside the Nappanee Center. Questions? Don’t hesitate to ask the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce also located inside the Nappanee Center.
