Africa Travel Brochure

Page 1

Welcome I love Africa. I love everything about it, from the deep red of the earth to the smell of the forests after rain, and the vast peace of an African morning to the shrill bark of a hyena at night. I love its colours, textures, sights and of course, its people. For Africa is not just one place, Africa is a collection of some of the most amazing countries and cultures on earth – which is why my company and staff are devoted to the place. We all know it, love it and want to share it with you, and that is what this brochure is all about. We have assembled it with joy and knowledge and extreme care so that you too can discover the beauty of this great continent and the many experiences it holds, whether that be viewing the migration of wildebeest across the great plains of Tanzania, enjoying the hidden waterways of the Okavango Delta, absorbing the exotic scents of Zanzibar & Lamu, or marvelling at the spectacular Victoria Falls. In this brochure Zimbabwe, a long time favourite of mine, makes a very welcome return to our portfolio, with the remarkable gorillas and game of the Republic of the Congo making their exciting debut. I hope you enjoy our brochure and we look forward to hearing from you.

How to use us and our brochure Our brochure has been designed to whet your appetite and entice you to Africa’s huge choice of destinations. It will also give you ideas of where to visit or explore, but it is simply the beginning of your journey. When you need help, extra information or guidance that is when to call us at Africa Travel and we will help you to arrive at your perfect tailor-made holiday. Unlike many tour operators & experts we recommend what is right for you, not for us and above all we will be honest with you, especially if you are being too ambitious and want to pack too much into a break. Distances and transfers in this vast continent are often much greater or less frequent than in other areas and it is our job to alert you to this and to explain exactly how far or quickly you can travel whilst still enjoying it to the maximum.

The people who know people Africa Travel is not just an office, a brochure, or a website. Africa Travel is composed of a group of people whose passion and job it is to ensure that you have the best African experience anyone can offer you. Our enthusiasm and thorough knowledge of Africa also means we know the right people on the ground to make your holiday that much more special; • if you want the best table in Cape Town’s top restaurant, we know it and will book it for you • if you want to explore the unknown Republic of the Congo, we are the people to ask • if you want to float over the Masai Mara in a hot air balloon, we can arrange it • if you want to play golf on South Africa’s best course, we will reserve your tee-off time • if you want to quad-bike for miles across the Botswana desert, we can take you there • if you want a wine-tasting tour by Harley-Davidson, we will organise it • if you want to enjoy an elephant-back safari, we know the right jumbo • if you want to consult with a traditional Zulu healer, we will send him to you • if you want to experience a migration river crossing, we know the riverbank to sit on • if you want to canoe down the Zambezi, we know the best stretch of the river • if you want to go on safari with South Africa’s last Master Tracker, we will book him for you • if you want to go cage diving with sharks, we will hire the boat • if you want to sleep out under the stars, we know just the place • if you want to track the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, we will obtain the permits We at Africa Travel know all of these and many more. Why? Because between us we have more than 250 years of experience and knowledge of Africa. And if you think that is an exaggeration just remember that the three directors of the company have over 75 years experience alone! Add to that our own local Cape Town office, the number of our staff who are African, and the rest of us who visit frequently and have grown to love the “dark continent”. We can guarantee you will have the best holiday of your life when you talk to us.

South Africa A golden country which has everything to offer the traveller – vast empty spaces, wilderness, glorious beaches, dramatic scenery and scorched plains. It is a country where two oceans – the Atlantic and the Indian – meet and converge to provide a spectacular coastline, a country so rich in soil that it’s fynbos is a protected element, and yet it still houses one of the most inhospitable deserts on earth, the Kalahari. But most of all it is a land rich in wildlife; it teems with lion and elephant, thousands of antelope, the elusive leopard and the endangered wild dog, not to mention a myriad of

antelope, zebra, wildebeest & giraffe and hundreds of species of bird. It is also the ideal place to see the greatest creatures of the deep during the whale-watching season and is one of the few places on the planet where you can spy penguins on the sands & dive with great whites. Add to that the lushness of the Garden Route, the bounties of the Wine Region, the riches of the Kruger National Park and the cosmopolitan glamour of Johannesburg and Cape Town and you have a land for all seasons, all tastes.

Zimbabwe A landlocked country which is often described as the most beautiful in all of Southern Africa. Bordered in the north west by the great Zambezi and in the south west by the Limpopo, it is home to the awesome majesty of Victoria Falls, to swathes of wild savannah and to the magical wilderness of Mana Pools National Park. The Matusadona National Park and Lake Kariba offer a water wilderness while the Matobos National Park is where to go to see 20,000-year old San paintings and for bird-watchers it is as near to heaven as is possible, as it is home to one third of the world’s species of eagle. Nature’s largesse also knows no bounds when

it comes to the Hwange National Park, for here some 30,000 elephant are free to roam, whilst the Matopos National Park remains a sanctuary for rhino. It is a country so rich in nature’s gifts with a super abundance of flora, fauna, game and wildlife. From its great evergreen forests and acres of bush come 360 different species of mammal and more than 500 different species of birds, and well over 130 different types of fish. It is a naturalist’s idea of heaven and still almost unspoilt.

Victoria Falls

Zambia A country abundant with protected wilderness, massive lakes, rich wetlands and spectacular waterfalls. From the mighty Victoria Falls, known by the locals as “mosi-oatunya” or the smoke that thunders, and the great Zambezi River to two of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa – the Luangwa and the Kafue National Parks – the scenic splendour of Zambia has no rival in Africa. David Livingstone was the first European to see the great Falls and named them Victoria after the English Queen.

On the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe they are the most extraordinary spectacle and one of the main tourist draws. Zambia is achieving a growing popularity amongst discerning travellers, with its lodges and camps concentrating on catering for this market on a small, highly personalised scale which makes them some of the best on the continent.

Botswana Botswana is a true wilderness, where twenty percent of the country is a protected national park. Often thought to be Africa’s best-kept secret, it houses amazing areas like the Okavango Delta, the Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve – all with a multitude of game. In addition to being a place of forests, deserts, great plains and wetlands it is also home to Africa’s third largest river, the Okavango, which creates the Okavango Delta, a warren of lagoons, streams, channels and islands which provide one of the finest game-viewing regions in the world, and also one of the best for birdlife. The finest way to explore the Delta is by mokoro,

a type of dug-out canoe, which is both a magical and near mystical journey, especially at sunrise or sunset. The world’s largest inland delta, one of its more astonishing elements is that it eventually disappears into the vast drylands of the Kalahari Desert, where the original Bushmen still live. Botswana has purposely aimed for and achieved a policy of high-income, low-volume tourism, and as a result it is now home to some of the world’s finest safari camps and lodges.

Namibia One of the oldest places on earth and one of the youngest nations – Namibia gained independence only in 1990. An extraordinary place – magnificent, magical and mysterious, Namibia is a land of two deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari, acres of nothingness and a coastline where the icy waters of the Atlantic meet the searing heat of the African desert. It’s where you will find penguins playing on the beach next to the remains of wrecked ships and lost whales – chillingly it is known as the Skeleton Coast! Inland there is the drama of Damaraland with its petrified forest, 1,000-year-old Welwitschia plant

and the endangered desert elephant and rhino, while at Sossusvlei, one of the oldest and driest eco-systems, climbing to the top of the highest sand dunes is a must. Then there are the famous salt pans of the Etosha National Park with their abundance of game, the wilderness of Kaokoveld in the far north, and the Fish River Canyon in the south – second only to the Grand Canyon in size. There is also the Caprivi strip – a narrow strip of lush wetlands extending across the top of Botswana where the Chobe and Zambezi rivers meet.

Kenya is the country which almost invented the safari holiday, as it was one of the first to embrace this extraordinary and exciting experience, showing the wonders of the wild. It was also the first to introduce the concept of the Big Five – elephant, lion, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard – because it is possible to see them all here. A vast land which stretches from the Indian Ocean across the low plains to Lake Victoria on the border with Uganda, and to the central highlands which are bisected by the Great Rift Valley, right through to Mount Kenya, the country’s highest point. It is a land of explorers, farmers, adventurers and more than 70 indigenous tribal groups, while offering the most

magnificent national parks and nature reserves on the continent. There is the Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro or the Masai Mara at the northern end of the Serengeti, which is part of the whole migration experience where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and antelope follow the rains. Then there is the desert-like Samburu Reserve and the Rift Valley Lakes – both freshwater and salt and famed for their profusion of birdlife, hippos and crocodiles – and not to mention the beaches of the seductive Indian Ocean resorts.

Tanzania and Zanzibar An extraordinary mix of vast open plains stocked with great game and a land of spices, souks, pristine beaches and bazaars. Tanzania provides some of the greatest game experiences in Africa and the wildlife here is considered by many to be the best anywhere. It is particularly spectacular during the migration in which over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebra head south every October and November, returning northwards after the long rains from April to June – an amazing experience to see and hear. All of this happens through the Serengeti, the most famous of all East Africa’s safari parks, where the Masai tribesmen have grazed their cattle for millennia and which they know

as Siringitu “the place where the land moves on forever”. To this, add 350 species of bird, the chance to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the remote Selous Game Reserve, Olduvai Gorge, where the fossil remains of the two-million-year-old Nutcracker Man were discovered, the Ngorongoro Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera which provides nature’s own theme park for game, the silken beaches of the Indian Ocean and the hidden streets of Zanzibar’s magical Stone Town – and here is a destination that cannot disappoint.

Rwanda Just a few degrees south of the equator, Rwanda is a jewel of a land, from the deep emerald of its forests to the brilliant sapphire of its lakes. Known as the land of a thousand hills, for wherever you look you will find hills, mountains and volcanoes towering above, it is also the place where Dian Fossey fought off poachers and politicians to save the deeply endangered African Mountain Gorilla. Now it is a country in recovery from the genocide which near devastated it, but its tourism and hospitality industry is already giving it a whole new lease of life. Most visitors come to see the gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans

and with the number of permits to view these gentle giants strictly limited these need to be arranged well in advance. The gorillas are a magnificent sight and one never forgotten, while the Parc itself is a dramatic chain of seven volcanoes which provide a border with both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Aside from the gorillas, other primates can be tracked in the Nyungwe National Park, or time can be spent relaxing on the beaches of Lake Kivu.

Lake Malawi sits at the southern end of the Rift Valley and provides a fantastic playground for all with its superb beaches and great fishing. Also home to some 500 varieties of the tropical cichlid fish, at night everyone can see what Livingstone meant as the lake lights up with the reflection of millions of stars, and in December another spectacle is on view as its shores become home to a myriad of different species of orchid.

For centuries it has absorbed what it needs from visitors, conquerors, traders and pirates, whether they were French, Chinese, English, Dutch, Indian or East African, who all came to rest, stay or plunder. Hence it is now the most cosmopolitan of all the Indian Ocean islands. Whilst the coastline is near perfect with beautiful beaches and hidden coves, its interior

offers mountains and forests, waterfalls and sparkling rivers alongside the occasional dormant volcano. The rich and luxuriant soil is why the vegetation is dense with more than 1,000 indigenous plants, and it is also why the island once got so rich from its sugar crops and plantations, remnants of which can still be explored today.

A wonderful description of these tiny islands, just over one hundred of them and spread across 455 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean, as they are indeed a thousand miles from the African mainland, with the Indian sub-continent twice the distance in the other direction. Madagascar The world’s fourth largest island, Madagascar is a vast magical land just waiting to be discovered. A former French colony, it offers a beguiling range of things to do and see as well as many areas to be explored. Rich in flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else on earth, a typical trip can include the lemurs of the Perinet Reserve, the baobabs of Morondava, the whales of Sainte Marie and the narrow streets and alleyways of charming Antananarivo, and while the infrastructure may be poor, the rewards are rich.

The jewel in Madagascar’s crown, however, is the offshore island of Nosy Be and its outlying neighbours. Largely undeveloped but boasting some superb beach hideaways, this really is island paradise. With whiter sands, clearer seas and more dramatic settings and sunsets than any of its Indian Ocean rivals, the idyll is completed by virgin beaches with nesting turtles and playful dolphins.

Morocco Morocco is as exotic as it is exciting, from the tip of its snow-capped mountains in the High Atlas to the edge of the great Sahara desert. There are a multitude of towns, villages, settlements and oases – some as old as time, not to mention the majesty of the Atlantic coast and the hedonistic warmth of the Mediterranean. It’s a place of history and mystery with great food, amazing markets, luxurious hotels and riads, magnificent palaces and secret gardens. It is a land of colour, shapes and fragrance, from the deep red earth of the north and the shades of ochre and russet that make up the buildings and walls of the old

imperial cities of Fes and Marrakech, to the vibrant green patches of the oases which dot the desert, it is a place to reawaken all your senses. Witness the silence of the desert and then the cacophony that is Djma El Fnaa, the magical main square of Marrakech with its snake charmers and story tellers. Weddings and Honeymoons africa travel

Weddings and Honeymoons Let Africa Travel help you plan one of the most important days in your life, or organise the most memorable, romantic and idyllic holiday you will ever enjoy. Our experienced travel consultants have arranged weddings, blessings, renewing of vows and honeymoons for couples and their families & friends all over Africa and the Indian Ocean and are happy to lend their expertise to you.

Weddings More and more couples are choosing to marry, or even renew their vows, abroad in tropical and exotic surroundings, from a deserted island or cliff-top at sunset to a picturesque wine estate or atop two magnificent elephants in the African bush. Call one of our wedding co-ordinators to talk through your requirements and everything from the minister, location & flowers to witnesses, the cake and even the dress can be organised, minimising the stresses of the bride & groom to be. We can also look after the travel arrangements of your family and friends, helping them choose where to stay and holiday either before or after the happy event.

Honeymoons If there is one holiday that really has to be idyllic, it’s a honeymoon. Whether you choose to remain in the same place that you married or to travel onwards for your honeymoon we can help. We offer a stunning choice of locations, all personalised to create the most important and memorable holiday you will ever take. Upgrades and romantic surprises are the norm, from champagne, flowers and secluded suites, to a couple’s massage or a sunset cruise for two. Whether you want to stay on a secluded island, take a cultural tour, join a walking safari or enjoy the bustle of a glamorous city location – we know the places and the locations where all of this is possible.

Wedding List In response to requests and enquiries from relatives and friends of the happy couple Africa Travel has developed a flexible wedding gift concept by compiling a list containing elements of the honeymoon that friends and family can purchase or contribute to – a romantic sunset cruise or a hot air balloon ride being examples. Guests enjoy a little insight into your honeymoon, appreciate the convenience of the online wedding gift system and are truly excited about giving an experience instead of an object. The wedding list remains open right up to the wedding day and, after receiving regular updates of the wedding list and returning from a memorable honeymoon, the newly-weds are then sent a final list, making it easy to send out thank-yous.

Healing Holidays africa travel

Healing Holidays was born after we noticed a growing interest from our clients in taking healthy holidays – holidays where they want to get fit, to detox, to lose weight or gain it. To travel to places which offer more than just the chance to refresh, but places which will give true relaxation and help rejuvenate tired and over-stressed minds and bodies. Healing Holidays is dedicated to those looking for health, fitness, rejuvenation or simple pampering. Our staff are both passionate and knowledgeable about spas and recognize their ever-growing importance in what people look for in holidays – so bring us your problems, needs or desires and we will help to sort them.

Asia has of course been the birthplace of so many healing therapies which is why the spas we have selected there are some of the best you will find – offering traditional ayurvedic treatments as well as massages and programmes of all types alongside meditation, yoga and tai chi, which all exercise the body and the mind. Talk to us at Healing Holidays – tell us your needs or simply discuss with us what you might be looking for. We have the knowledge, will make suggestions and help you to come to the decision that’s right for you. Healing Holidays does exactly what it promises – it takes you to a place of health and healing where you can benefit from care and cossetting. You can rest assured that all our recommendations are places we have both visited and vetted, and we are committed to regular site inspections to keep up with any changes.

africa travel Giving Back

Giving Back At Africa Travel we are strong believers in ensuring that those who live in destinations visited by tourists benefit from such visits – whether it be directly through employment in the travel industry, or indirectly via community programmes, outreach projects or educational schemes. Whenever possible we try to feature and recommend those properties and suppliers ‘who give something back’ and who have policies of employing staff and utilizing resources from the local community.

Chipembere Rhino Foundation Conservation is key to Africa, its livelihood, its future and its people which is why maintenance of its forests, flora and fauna is of such importance and conserving its animals and birds vital. One of the most threatened of all species is the rhino – almost driven to the point of extinction 50 years ago, a huge conservation programme swung into action and the species was preserved. However, it is under threat once again with only 20,000 white rhino left in the world and an average of one rhino per day currently being poached. Meaning rhinoceros in the local Shona language, the non-profit Chipembere Rhino Foundation is committed to assisting in the protection and conservation of one of Africa’s most beloved creatures, and was set up when the Amakhala Private Game Reserve lost two rhinos in a single night. The long-term vision of the Foundation is to provide on-theground equipment support for anti-poaching teams, to supply monitoring assistance in the form of tracking devices, veterinary procedures & ear-notching kits, and to create a media awareness campaign though youth education.

Grootbos Nature Reserve Grootbos has always shown a serious commitment to conservation. However, a major threat to this is high local unemployment and a lack of access for local communities to natural resources, which the Reserve has set out to redress and has resulted in many accolades. The Grootbos Foundation works tirelessly in the conservation of the biodiversity of Grootbos and its surrounds and also with the development of sustainable nature-based livelihoods through eco tourism, research, management and education projects. One such project is the Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College which provides training programmes for local unemployed people as well as transport, meals, uniform,

equipment and a basic wage. Linked to the college is a plant nursery and landscaping business which generates income, and Grootbos’ guests are always encouraged to visit the school, and of course to contribute. Another project is the Spaces for Sport Project where, with the encouragement and passion of Grootbos, the Gansbaai Communal Sport Centre was opened for the use of the local community and townships. Add to this a Future Trees Project and a number of greening initiatives within local communities and guests can easily see and understand Grootbos’ commitment to its locality, to conservation and to eco-tourism.

Uthando Uthando South Africa is a non-profit organization and a truly unique Responsible Tourism initiative based in Cape Town. Its mission is to provide a platform and infrastructure to raise funds from individuals, groups and organizations who have an interest in the region. Money generated from organizations such as Africa Travel supports a broad range of local communitybased, innovative empowerment projects with substantial and enduring value to the beneficiaries. In addition, Uthando aims to provide tourists with an authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many South Africans, and the innovative and inspirational ways in which these problems are being handled. The exposure of this programme to overseas visitors facilitates a vital role of ongoing awareness, creation and education, which in turn helps to make a significant difference to the lives of the most destitute and marginalized communities. One of the many projects supported is Nazareth House, an orphanage for children living with HIV/AIDS, with visitors to Cape Town able to share in a truly moving and uplifting experience. Other supported projects include drug rehabilitation, housing and shelter support, human rights development and sustainable economic development.
