Need to know GETTING AROUND The New York subway is the quickest and easiest way to get around the city, with a 24 hour service and 34 lines that serve over 420 stations. To travel on the subway, you’ll need to buy a MetroCard and use it on a pay-per-ride, unlimited ride or 7-day ride basis. Stations offer multilingual vending machines to purchase these cards and most have staff on hand to help. Taxis are all over New York and can be hailed if the rooftop light is lit. If it’s not lit, the taxi is already in use. For a personal car service, please contact your hotel’s concierge.

WEATHER New York is a city that truly sees all four seasons with hot, humid summers, cool, dry autumns, cold winters and wet springs. January highs average at under 5 degrees Celsius, while July temperatures average at nearly 30 degrees Celsius.

GRATUITY Americans are big on tipping, and New York is no exception. Customers are expected to tip in restaurants, bars, clubs, cabs, beauty salons and anywhere that provides a service. While tipping is at your discretion, it is an expected part of the bill and goes without saying. Most New Yorkers tip a minimum of 18% in restaurants, while the average cab/hair salon tip is around 10 – 15% of the bill. In bars and at hotels, it is customary to leave bartenders and hotel staff $1 – 2 per service interaction.

GENERAL SAFETY & SECURITY Any reputation New York has of being dangerous comes from a hangover of the 1980s, when New York City crime was at its highest. Nowadays, it’s one of the safest cities in the United States. Most areas of New York are safe and patrolled by police officers, who are friendly and helpful. Like in all international cities, don’t leave your bag unattended and be vigilant in crowded areas. The national emergency number for the police, ambulance and fire services is 911.

LOCAL CELL / MOBILE SIM The calling code for the United States is +1, and the New York area code is 212. Local sim card providers are located all over the city. To learn more about taking your current phone, please contact your local provider.

WATER Tap water in New York City is world-renowned for its quality, and is completely safe to drink.

Restaurants The best advice for those travelling to New York? Arrive with an empty stomach. The cuisines of the world collide in this melting pot of flavours, allowing you to try each dish from every corner of the globe and all the fusion your heart desires. With this choice comes a variety of the world’s best restaurants, which has made New York somewhat of a Mecca for Michelin lovers. There are umpteen restaurants with Michelin nods, from honourable mentions to the full 3-star experience. Here are some of our favourites.

Triomphe Merging innovation and authenticity, the refined yet comfortable Triomphe Restaurant is a critically acclaimed French favourite among midtown locals. Opening its doors in the autumn of 2000, Triomphe has garnered praise from esteemed publications such as The New York Times and the New York Observer, among others. Chef Florian Wehrli provides a tranquil space with an all-day menu inspired by the elegant flavours of France, with a standout wine list. 49 West 44th Street NYC, NY 10036 iroquoisny.com/triomphe

Casa Mono What Casa Mono lacks in size, it makes up for in ambience. That is the beauty of this small tapas restaurant – it pulses with energy, and you can be sure to taste some innovative tapas from owner and executive chef Andy Nusser. While the dishes are made to be shared, you won’t leave hungry with an exceptionally diverse range of flavours available. Seafood is prominent, there’s a range of succulent meat dishes and those with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed. Stand out dishes include octopus with fennel and grapefruit, bacalao croquetas and crema catalana. 125 E 17th Street, New York City, NY 10003 casamononyc.com +1 212 253 2773 View on map

The Musket Room Chef Matt Lambert has a penchant for the food of his native New Zealand, offering up a creative interpretation of Kiwi cuisine with a contemporary twist. You’ll find Kiwi classics, such as an extensive (and exquisite!) New Zealand wine list and traditional pavlova, as well as wacky and wild creations such as a rum-cured torchon of foie gras and Ora king salmon topped with freeze-dried Satsuma. It’s no wonder the Musket Room was awarded a Michelin star rating – the food, and the farmhouse-chic décor, are definitely worth writing home about. 265 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY 10012 themusketroom.com +1 212 219 0764 View on map

Sakagura Tucked away in the basement of a generic midtown building, Sakagura makes what could have been bland empty space into a stunning Japanese immersion experience. As soon as you’ve entered the restaurant, you feel like you’re in the middle of Japan with an indoor outdoor feel with the appropriate foliage, rice paper dividers and a chic wooden décor. Sakagura offers delicious fresh sashimi, a variety of udon soups and so many meat dishes it’s hard to choose just one. 211 E 43rd Street Basement Level New York, NY 100 sakagura.com

Bars & Cafes Famed for good coffee and great cocktails, there’s always the chance to sip on your favourite drink in New York. This is the city that gave us so many of our favourite cocktails, that popularised coffee houses, that is famed for its second-to-none drinking experiences. Whether it’s the best iced latte in town or the latest innovative cocktails, here are our favourite watering holes.

Happy Bones Tucked away near Little Italy is Happy Bones, a small and somewhat obscure café that is known amongst New Yorkers as a destination for great coffee. From flat whites to espressos to iced coffees, their drinks menu is sold with a focus on quality. Its setting is minimalist, with white exposed brick, concrete floors and wooden benches for seats. But the quality brew is also matched with a zealous desire to have a positive impact of the world, with sustainability a priority. It’s a guilt-free coffee stop with the added bonus of delicious sweet treats. 394 Broome Street, New York, NY 10013 happybonesnyc.com +1 212 673 3754 View on map

P.J Clarke’s Third Avenue Since 1884, this once Irish-owned pub has been serving New Yorkers with beer, wine and fantastic cocktails (the apple martini is a must!). The interior merges classic Irish pub with the glam of 1800’s Americana, which can be seen in the gold detailing of the roof and ceilings. P.J Clarke’s is also notable for its past visitors – Nat King Cole claimed the bacon cheeseburger was “the Cadillac of burgers”, Buddy Holly proposed to his wife here and the characters on TV’s Mad Men frequented the bar. 915 Third Avenue, at 55th Street, New York, NY 10022 pjclarkes.com/location/third-avenue

Death and Co. Don’t be put off by the name – the only thing deadly about this place is how much fun you’ll have! Established in 2006, this East Village cocktail bar has won a string of accolades and is internationally renowned for its stellar cocktail list. Death and Co. isn’t your average cocktail bar – it’s like cocktail university. The bar offers a definitive guidebook to the craft of mixology (available online), which can be seen in the quirky creations that merge flavours and textures. They’ll also be more than happy to whip up a classic Manhattan for traditionalists. 433 EAST 6TH STREET (B/W 1ST & A), NEW YORK, NY 10009 deathandcompany.com +1 212 388 0882 View on map

Buvette Gastrotheque An elegant Parisian-inspired café with an edgy New York flair, there are few places better to brunch than on the marble-topped bar of Buvette Gastrotheque. The menu may be small, but this place knows that less is more when you’re dealing with quality. Combining its hole-in-the-wale allure with its devotion to delicious creations and perfectly-roasted coffee makes this a staple on the New York brunch scene. For a sure fire hit, try the fluffy steamed eggs with prosciutto. 42 Grove Street, West Village, NY www.buvette.com

Sightseeing & Recreation The Statue of Liberty! Central Park! Times Square! There are too many things to see in New York, and you can never run out of options. This is the city that never sleeps, so day and night you can make the most of this bustling mega-city. Here are some of our most independently minded things to do in the Big Apple.

Bond No.9 If you could bottle what it is that makes New York so alluring, it’s fly off the shelves. Well that’s what founder Laurice Rahme did in 2003, with the aim to create a fragrance for each of the city’s neighbourhoods. The name of the fragrance collection is the address of the flagship store in NoHo, and each scent represents a different side of the Big Apple – downtown, midtown, uptown and more. The perfumery sums up its home city with the artistry of fragrances, with specific scents available for both men and women (including unisex options). 9 BOND ST www.bondno9.com +1 212 228 1732 View on map

Green-Wood Cemetery Founded in 1838, Green-Wood is 478 acres of hills, ponds and paths with one of the largest collections of 19th- and 20th-century statues and mausoleums. The spectacular architecture is breath-taking in its grandeur, and the actual grounds are famed for being a battle site during the Revolutionary War. Nowadays, the park is perfect for enjoying a rich history of architecture and design as well as visiting some well-knows graves such as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and musician Leonard Bernstein. Brooklyn Night Bazaar The Brooklyn Night Bazaar is open Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm – 2am, and offers an unrivalled selection of activities involving food, drinks, markets, games and live music. Housed in a former Polish catering hall, the bazaar offers a music venue and over 50 vendors selling anything and everything, as well as a permanent restaurant offering tasty Southern treats. On top of this, you can opt for a more active night by making use of the city’s first (and only!) entertainment complex that merges ping pong, mini golf, arcade games and karaoke. 150 Greenpoint Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11222 bkbazaar.com View on map

Empire State Building after dark If this is your first visit, you’ll no doubt be going to the top of the Empire State Building to admire the unmatched views of the New York skyline. If you’ve already been, you’ll still probably have a pinch-me moment when you see the icon of New York City. Either way, you should beat the crowds and experience the Empire State after midnight. Enjoy a quiet viewing platform and an eerily silent cityscape, where it feels like a date between you and New York City. 17-25 W 29th St, New York, NY 10001, USA www.esbnyc.com

Culture It’s not hard to find culture, in any form, in New York City. From high culture to contemporary culture to world culture, this is the place to be for the culturally inclined. Every form of art and performance and creative expression is available here, and New Yorkers are avid fans of supporting both local and international art. Here are our independently minded tips to experience the best of New York.

Live comedy New York is home to some of the best live comedy in the world, and is the birthplace of the careers of some of the greats. The Comedy Cellar has a rotating line-up of pro comics, with very regular guest appearances from household names. The Gotham Comedy Club is Chelsea’s resident club, with a diverse line-up of comics every night. To see the rising stars of improv and sketch comedy, head to the UCB Theatres in both Chelsea and East Village. Both theatres provide multiple shows each night, from improvised plays to stand-up specials to experimental theatre.

First Street Garden For an alternative art experience, head to the First Street Garden Park. In 2008, a derelict building was converted into a living art space for locals to express their creativity. From edgy street art to contemporary architecture, the park is full of incredible pieces and hosts ongoing cultural activity with emerging artists, architects and cultural groups. This is a refreshing look at modern art and an intriguing glimpse into how residents of a global city are bringing the local community together through creativity. 33 East 1st Street, NYC www.firststreetgreenpark.org +1 917 622 2462 View on map

Blue Note Jazz Club It’d be a crime to not see some live jazz at a quintessential New York music club, and there’s no better place than the home of jazz, the Blue Note Jazz Club. The ever-changing rotation of jazz stars ensures the line-ups vary from week to week, and the Sunday jazz brunch is a special treat. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled – stars who have made guest appearances include Stevie Wonder, Liza Minelli and Tony Bennett. 131 W. 3rd St, New York, NY 10012 www.bluenote.net/newyork

Outdoors For such a big and busy city, New York isn’t short of outdoor spaces. Every inch of the city is utilised in some way, ensuring there are creative, innovative ways of enjoying the outdoors (High Line, anyone?). From unique parks to rooftop bars, there’s always a good view to be enjoyed in New York City. Here are our best suggestions to enjoy the great outdoors in the Big Apple.

The High Line and the Lowline In a crammed city like New York, no space goes unused. In recent years, sustainability has been a driving force behind some of the most innovative creations of public space. The High Line is the perfect example of how New York is taking its disused spaces to create its sensational places! What was once run down train tracks heading to the city’s west is now a public park set above the stylish streets of the Meatpacking district, with unmatched views that allow you to enjoy the skyline up close and personal. 820 Washington Street - New York, NY 10014 www.thehighline.org +1 212 500 6035 View on map

Rooftops Not going to a rooftop bar in New York would be criminal, so head to some of the city’s off-the-beaten track rooftops. The Pod 39 Rooftop Bar is a spot of calm in the storm of activity that is Manhattan, offering unseen views of the city amongst Neoclassical Italian architecture. You are able to sit back and sip on a Manhattan (in Manhattan!) at Rare View, a cocktail bar surrounded by lush green bush and the concrete jungle of midtown. For a year-round vistas of the city from the top, the Refinery Rooftop is the perfect place for some lunch overlooking the Empire State Building.

The Brooklyn Bridge There’s no better view of the downtown and midtown skyline than the views from the Brooklyn Bridge. If you face one way, you see the prodigious Freedom Tower dwarfing the surrounding skyscrapers. Do a 180, you can see the never-ending Manhattan skyline stretching to the horizon, with the city’s most famous landmarks clearly visible, such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.

Elizabeth Street Sculpture Garden Located opposite the Elizabeth Street Gallery is a garden space like no other in New York. It’s not the green space nor the trees that draw people into the Elizabeth Street Sculpture Garden in Nolita, but the unique collection of sculptures. We’re not talking one or two dotted around the garden, this is a park of 20,000 square feet featuring countless reproductions of famous sculptures as well as original pieces. It’s the perfect place to get some peace and quiet during a busy day in New York, and you’re sure to have hours of fun exploring the various sculptures decorating the park. 235 Elizabeth St., Ste. 23, New York, NY 10012 elizabethstreetgarden.org View on map
