ROME

Need to know GETTING AROUND Rome is a sprawling city, but many of its main attractions are around the famed historic district. You can easily rely on the city’s metro, which offers three lines that take you to various parts of the city. Rome also has an extensive bus network and a tram system. This public transport will come in handy as, while you can discover most of Rome by foot, there are a few must-see things that require access by public transport. While station staff and multilingual ticket machines can offer assistance, it always pays to check with your concierge or reception staff to confirm directions to stations or to organise a private car for your comfort. Taxis are readily available in the city, but can only be taken from designated taxi stands which are dotted around the city. Taxis will not pull over if hailed.

WEATHER

GENERAL SAFETY & SECURITY Rome is generally a very safe city for all travellers, and violent crime is extremely rare. As in all big cities, care should be taken (especially at night and around Termini Station) and usual precautions adhered to.

LOCAL CELL / MOBILE SIM The Italian calling code is +39. Check with your local provider for further information on taking your phone to Italy. You can buy a sim at one of many shops in Rome, but English-speaking staff are never guaranteed in Italy so be sure to bring your phrase book.

WATER

Rome enjoys a traditional Mediterranean climate, including hot, dry summers and cool, humid winters.

Not only is the tap water safe to drink (and rather tasty, at that!), but you will notice running taps and drinking fountains all over the city.

August is the hottest month, July the driest, with January the coldest month and November the wettest.

This water is a free for all, and is cold and refreshing. Romans are extremely proud of this free water, so make sure you take a sip as you discover the city to really live like a Roman.

Warmer days are known to start as early as March and can last well into October, while snowfall is extremely rare.

GRATUITY Tipping is not compulsory in Italy, but leaving a few Euros for the waiting staff or chef after a good experience will be appreciated.

Restaurants Of Italy’s gifts to the world, none are as evident as the cuisine. From plates of pasta to the perfect pizza, Italy’s cuisine is arguably the world’s favourite and it only gets better once you step foot in the country. Here, food isn’t just something to fill you up – it’s an expression of love from the locals, and everyone is invited to the romance. Here are some of our favourite Roman restaurants.

Sightseeing & Recreation A day sightseeing in Rome could involve a crypt of skulls, an opulent palace from the 1500s, a bustling suburb with quirky boutiques and an historic piazza full of fresh produce. Few cities can match the beguiling energy of Rome, and there is a never-ending list of must-dos and must-sees. Here are our top picks for independently minded sightseeing and recreation in Rome.

Capuchin Crypt Welcome to a place of worship that looks more like an episode of Tales from the Crypt. Occupying the tiny space beneath the Santa Maria della Immacolata Concezione dei Cappuccini on Via Veneto, the Capuchin Crypt is comprised of six tiny chapels containing the skeletal remains of thousands of bodies believed to be Capuchin friars. This eerie experience can be summed up in the expression displayed in the church: “As you are, we once were. Palazzo Barberini The elegant grandeur of Palazzo Barberini’s Baroque façade is a symbol of Rome’s architecture – historic, celebrated and purely Italian. Many high profile architects worked on the structure, including rivals Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini, which was commissioned to celebrate the Barberini family’s rise to papal power. Be sure to wander the magnificent gardens, which provide a moment of tranquillity in the chaos of Rome. Inside the palace is a myriad of artistic gems at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, including work by celebrated artist Caravaggio. Monti The trendy quarter of Monti is home to Rome’s hip kids, with its quirky independent shops, an abundance of restaurants and numerous funky hangouts. Every weekend, the suburb is home to a vintage market, held in the conference hall of Grand Hotel Palatino since 2009. The market is an eclectic mix of the old and the new, merging vintage treasures with a modern twist and contemporary creations with lots of sass.

Piazza Campo de’ Fiori This is the little black dress of Roman piazzas – it’s appropriate for any occasion. During the day, a lively market is abuzz with fresh fruit and produce vendors serving locals with delicious Italian foods. The flower section of the market adds a natural decorative feature to the experience, the colours and scents of the season washing over the piazza. By night, the restaurants that line the square come to life with diners sipping on prosecco and enjoying food most likely created from the day’s markets.

Culture In the place that created much of the western culture of today, it’s no surprise to discover that culture runs through the city’s streets like blood through veins. The most interesting thing about cultural activities in Rome is how they span generations. Historic art merges with contemporary creations, and all can be seen in the Eternal City. Here are our top picks!

MAXXI The MAXXI is a national museum with a focus on present-day art and architecture. The museum is a masterpiece designed by the late Zaha Hadid, and is famed for launching her career. Even if the MAXXI wasn’t full of cutting-edge, experimental displays of today’s artistic expressions (and it is), the building is worth a visit for its awe-inspiring outer aesthetics. The external visual representation channels the city in all its unashamed glory – complex, confusing, mesmerizing, and – as are all things Roman – beautiful. Parco della Musica This is the place to see music in Rome, not only for its incredible showcase of music but for its remarkable aesthetic. Designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano (who is known for The Shard in London), the auditorium is a multi-functional music complex with a number of different spaces, including a Greek-style theatre and three large concert halls that are known as “the blobs” or “the beetles”. Book a ticket to one of the many music shows to see why this is the most visited music facility in Europe. Keats-Shelley Memorial House Housed in a building that sits right next to the famed Spanish Steps, the Keats-Shelley Memorial House is a museum dedicated to the poets lauded for English Romanticism who were captivated by the beauty of Rome. Throughout the beautiful rooms of the house are artefacts associated with the lives and the works of English poets John Keats and P.B. Shelley, including two typical Roman terrace houses, a small cinemas featuring films on the poets and the preserved bedroom where Keats lived and died in 1821. Outdoors Sun is never too far away in Rome, so enjoying the al fresco lifestyle is a part of the fun. Whether it is enjoying a stroll in one of the city’s parks or wandering the streets in the sun, Rome provides many options for you to enjoy the great outdoors. Here are some of the best options available!

Villa Borghese No park in the city is as loved by Romans as Villa Borghese, with its grand manor and stunning gardens. Inspired by the quaintness of English landscape design, it is built on the site of a former vineyard and features a number of heritage buildings. Curious things about Villa Borghese include the fact the gardens feature in composer Respighi’s Pini di Roma and a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was built in the park in 2003.
