Mykonos

Need to know GETTING AROUND The entire island of Mykonos is just over 100 kilometres squared, so it can be easily navigated in a relatively short space of time. There is no public train service on the island, but there is a reliable and affordable bus network that offers an increased service during peak tourist season. For those who prefer private travel, there are many taxis available (see your concierge for further details). It is also worth hiring a car whilst there, which can be organised online, through your travel agent or via your concierge. Please note the bus services are much less frequent outside of peak season and will not pull over if hailed.

Mykonos is famed for its sunshine, which can be enjoyed for as many as 300 days per year. Summers are dry and pleasant, with the daily highs averaging in the late 20s Celsius (or early 80s Fahrenheit) and sometimes reaching up to 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Winters tend to be short, mild and wet, but sunny days are known to last into winter.

Mykonos

Introduction From the natural sea blues and lush greens to the zesty, electric party scene, Mykonos is famed for being one of the most vibrant and buzzing of the Greek islands. Traditional Greek villages are dotted around the island, with a contemporary tourism clientele ensuring the island offers an authentic slice of Greek culture amidst luxury amenities, from high-end restaurants to modern, cutting-edge galleries.

GENERAL SAFETY & SECURITY Mykonos is generally a very safe place to visit, with very little risk or danger in any capacity. It pays to take care whilst driving (particularly when on a motorbike or quad bike) as roads are narrow with sudden curves. It also pays to carry a hat and sunscreen with you, as parts of the island (and its surrounding attractions) offer little shade on a hot, sunny day. The emergency line for an ambulance, the police or the fire service is 112.

would do – we reached out to them to ask them about their Mykonos. Where they eat, where they socialise, where they enjoy the island’s history and art. So welcome to the SLH Mykonos Guide – an in-depth look at the top spots in Mykonos, curated by us using information from local Mykonos experts and our very own club members. With an overkill of tourist information floating around the internet, it can be hard to discover the real essence of Mykonos and we aren’t about to give you fluffy soundbites from the latest travel blogger. We’re independently minded like that, and we also happen to have access to some of the best concierge services in the world with over 520 luxury hotels in over 80 countries. LOCAL CELL / MOBILE SIM WEATHER

Independently minded in

The international dialling code for Greece is +30. It pays to contact your local provider to enquire about roaming fees. You can also buy a pre-paid or pay-as-you-go sim from a variety of providers in Mykonos.

WATER On the most part, tap water is safe to drink in Mykonos but may taste unusual due to the high mineral content. It is recommended that, for peace of mind, you opt for bottled water.

GRATUITY Tipping in Greece is by no means a requirement, but it is anticipated by wait staff. The normal expectation is that, upon receiving good service, customers will offer a 15 – 20% tip. It is also common to round up the figure and leave the change. Please be aware that some Greek restaurants have a “cover charge”, which is to cover the bottled water and bread on tables. It is usually around €1 per person, and cannot be removed from the bill.

Restaurants

Bars & Cafes

You won’t struggle to find good food in Greece. There’s a tasty taverna at almost every turn, and the “in” crowd that frequents the island as a holiday destination has brought a stunning range of fine-dining options with them. From a simple and traditional Greek dish to elaborate international flavours, Mykonos has it all…and then some! See our favourites below.

The Greeks are known for their buzzing nightlife, and at the centre of this is the electricity of Mykonos after dark. But fear not – it’s not all super clubs. You can dance the night away to the beats of internationally renowned DJs, or you can sip on a cocktail as you watch the sun set (and all that comes in between!). Here are our favourite bars and cafes on Mykonos Island.

Interni

Veneti 1948

Welcome to the world of Interni, where al fresco dining is the norm, where the high-end design and décor offers an authentic Greek flair and where executive chef Christos Fotos offers a tantalising menu of modern European dishes. Opt for fresh fish or a hearty meat dish, choose a sauvignon from New Zealand or a rosé from Italy, and soak up the cool, calm energy of this haven in the centre of the buzzing Mykonos Town.

It wouldn’t be a holiday to the Mediterranean without stocking up on pastries, and there’s no better place to go in Mykonos than Veneti 1948 patisserie. Peruse the many tasty treats on display and select your chosen favourite for a delicious (and local!) breakfast or lunch. Be sure to try an amigthalota, a delicious Greek sweet pastry made with almonds.

Kuzina Mykonos

Scarpa Mykonos

Kuzina is famed in Athens for its quality ingredients, stylish atmosphere and ability to fuse traditional Greek dishes and contemporary flavours with ease. For the last few years, Mykonos Ammos Hotel has housed the restaurant’s summer kitchen in the Ornos area, offering a delicious bite of Mediterranean food right on the beach. True to the vibe of Mykonos, Kuzina offers an alluring mix of tasty fresh food and a buzzing ambiance right on the water’s edge. For a treat, try the spicy tuna with ginger and wasabi sauce – it’s to die for! Ornos Beach, Mykonos www.kuzina.gr/en +30 2289 026434 View on map

It’s not just the seaside location and the incredible views of Mykonos Town that make Scarpa so worth the visit, but also its ability to morph from a quaint bar that sits on the edge of Little Venice into a pulsing nightclub with world-class DJs spinning tracks as the waves gently crash to shore under the bar’s terrace. Only Greece does outdoor bars this good, and Scarpa is worth the visit for the tasty cocktails alone. Little Venice, Mykonos Town, Mykonos https://www.facebook.com/scarpamykono

Nammos Mykonos

Cavo Paradiso

There’s nothing quite like a scrumptious lunch in the middle of a beach day, particularly when the food is as good as what’s on offer at Nammos Mykonos. Situated on the white-sand shores of Psarou, Nammos redefines the classic beach bar with a serious injection of opulence. Overlook the beach as you snack on fresh local seafood and a selection of cooling drinks, ensuring that you can be as glamourous as a movie star as you sit in your swimmers.

Mykonos is one of Europe’s original party destinations and, while it offers so much more than a buzzing nightlife, it’s the place to let your hair down and dance the night away. Cavo Paradiso is widely regarded as one of the best clubs in the world, set atop a cliff that overlooks the sea. Not only is the view and the setting spectacular for watching the sun set (or rise, depending on your preference), but the nightclub offers a list of world-renowned guests DJs, from Steve Aioki to Fatboy Slim.

Galleraki

Don’t let the queues put you off – this place is simply sublime! All the frills aren’t required when there’s a grill, some drinks and a stellar view. This is the spot for you to try some traditional local cooking with an off-the-beaten-track feel. Needless to say, the seafood is so fresh it will blow your mind, the service gives you a dose of real Greek hospitality and it will offer you a real pinch-me moment that you’ll remember for years to come.

Greece is famed for its Instagram-able views, and Mykonos is no exception. Head to the buzzing bar of Galleraki, right smack bang in the middle of the butsle of Little Venice in Mykonos Town. Grab yourself a cocktail just before dusk, get a prime position outside and take in the energy of one of the island’s most vibrant areas. Sightseeing & Recreation

Culture

For such a small island, there’s a dizzying amount to see and do. From exploring the hidden beaches to discovering magical, mythical islands with generations of history. There’s no wrong way to see Mykonos, but here are our must-do and must-see things and places!

Mykonos offers a range of cultural activities, from sipping on chilled wine over a live jazz set to discovering the unbelievably rich history of the island at the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. You can enjoy internationally renowned art at a world-class gallery or discover ancient whitewashed churches. The choice is yours!

Scorpios

Live Jazz at Vinos Mykonos

A beach day at Scorpios offers more than your average beach bar. This contemporary beach destination, located on Paraga Beach, is a cultural revolution of sorts. The ethos of Scorpios is plain and simple – fun and frivolity, with a dash of creativity. The food is amazing, the beach is unmissable, the socialising opportunities endless, the live music mesmerising and the style and décor impeccable.

Vinos Mykonos is a charming, stylish wine bar and restaurant in its own right, but it’s the regular live jazz nights that really give this place its edge. The walls are decorated with chic art pieces, the style is elegant yet cosy, and the variety of wine, both local and international, is easily paired with the exquisite cuisine on offer (including incredibly good local cuisine!). Add live saxophone and vocals from local jazz musicians, you have yourself the perfect recipe for unforgettable ambiance. Jazz is usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but it pays to check the official website beforehand. Kalogera Str, Mykonos Town, Mykonos www.vinosbar.gr/en +30 2289 028622 View on map

This strip of picturesque Greek architecture set beside the sea with buzzing cafes, restaurants and bars really gives you the best of Greece – the sun, the sea, the food, the drinks and the alluring call of bustling bars that never cease to excite.

Rarity Gallery is a lauded art gallery in Mykonos Town, giving the island a serious dose of contemporary cool. Not only are the gallery staff eager to take you through the different artworks with an insider’s eye explanation, but the works are particularly top notch, rivalling galleries in cities like London and New York. Head here for some curious discoveries and to mix up the Mykonos experience from days by the sea to afternoons perusing a well-respected international art gallery with a flair for the quirky. 20 - 22 Kalogera Str, Mykonos Town, Mykonos www.raritygallery.com +30 2289 025761 View on map

Delos Island

Panagia Paraportiani

Step into the magical, mythical world of Delos Island, which is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The captivating island is not only famed for its beautiful landscapes that are known for being sacred to a Greek goddess, but it also has ongoing excavation works for all of the artefacts that have been found and are currently being found under the direction of the French School at Athens. The boat trip over is short and pleasant, but be sure to wear sneakers – you’ll want to explore in comfort! Delos Island, Greece View on map

On the most western part of the town lies the alluring beauty of the Panagia Paraportiani, a beautiful white-washed church that is a true gem of the Byzantine era in the historic Kastro district of Mykonos Town. Of all the churches on the island (and there are over 400!), this could be the most impressive – not only does it date back to 1425 but it offers you a real slice of Greek architecture that is complemented by sensational sea views. Kastro, Mykonos Town, Mykonos View on map

Tinos

Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

Only a short boat ride away from Mykonos is the charming island of Tinos. The island’s most revered landmark is the most famous and important church in Greece, the Panagia Evangelistria, which is known for its miraculous icon and magical atmosphere. After taking in the church’s grandeur, explore further afield with the traditional village of Volax, home to a charming community of basket makers, before enjoying the fresh seafood at one of the authentic tavernas in the peaceful fishing bay of Panormos. Tinos, Greece View on map

For a taste of history, head to the impressive collection of ancient Greek pieces at the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. Open daily from 8.30am to 3pm (except Mondays), the museum showcases a large number of cultural artefacts ranging from the prehistoric to the late Hellenistic period (25th-1st century B.C.). The collection and its history is captivating and mindboggling, and the museum – like all things in Greece – is set in a beautiful location overlooking the sea.

Outdoors It won’t be hard to find some peace and quiet in the great outdoors of Mykonos. If your eyes are open, it will happen with minimal effort as every view is picture-worthy. There are, however, a few sneaky ways to make the most of Mykonos and its nature. See our top tips below!

Agios Sostis Beach One of the reasons Kiki’s taverna is so popular is because it sits above the remarkably beautiful (and even more remarkably blue!) waters of Agios Sostis beach, one of the finest – and most secluded – white-sand beaches on the island. The sheltered bay is the perfect swimming beach for families, with shallow, still waters that are warmed by the sun but still refreshingly cool. This is Mediterranean blue at its finest!

Scuba diving There’s no use being so close to the sparkling waters of the Greek Islands if you’re only going to discover what’s on land. Plus, there’s no better excuse to spend the day on a boat than scuba diving! The clear waters offer a whole new world to discover, with schools of fish at every turn. Take the plunge off of the island’s more sheltered south coast, at the legal scuba coves of Paradise or Kalafáti. See your concierge to book with the island’s best scuba tours.

Fokos Beach Like all good things in life, Fokos Beach isn’t easy to reach. This explains why it is often neardeserted in the months leading up to summer, its white sands and inviting waters just begging to be appreciated. It’s so secluded and peaceful here, the energy and vibrancy of Mykonos Town seems like a million miles away as you listen to the waves lap onto the shore. Don’t worry, you won’t go hungry – the charming Fokos Taverna is open in summer months, offering traditional Greek fare for when you’re peckish. www.fokosmykonos.com
