Create cherished memories in Åland! Some of my favourite holiday memories are from my family’s summer cottage on the island of Kumlinge. I find energy and inner calm when I spend time among the old red storehouses on the little island, which sits right in the middle of the Åland archipelago. There, I can sit on the sun-bleached pier while the kids play along the shore. We fish and eat the freshly caught smoked perch. In the winter, we cosy up in front of the fireplace while snowflakes float down outside the windows. You, too, can create your own cherished memories of Åland. With the sea all around and more than 6,700 islands, there are endless places to explore in the world’s most beautiful archipelago. Distances are short and it never takes long to find a place for a swim, a sight to admire or a restaurant for a delicious bite to eat. We Ålanders say that we’re ‘on island time’– there are no queues or long commutes – which is why we’re able to get more out of our days. It seems almost as if we have 25 hours in the day instead of just 24. Even though many think Åland is beautiful in the summer, I’d like to point out that every season has its special charm. Floral displays, our marvellous bird life and the Åland in Greenery open house event in the countryside are just three reasons to visit in the spring. Autumn is high season for sport fishing and outdoor activities, and the charming Harvest Festival is a good place to sample delicious raw ingredients and fantastic artisanal foods. The winter is a time of repose in Åland, and there is plenty of time to wind down and rest both body and mind. Why not try long-distance skating on the brilliant expanses of a frozen bay? An evening sauna is always so much more enjoyable after a day out in the bracing archipelago air. Naturally, summer is also a great time to be here, with its white nights, the glittering blue of the sea and action-packed days filled with all manner of events and activities. I wholeheartedly recommend that you come to Åland during every season to make lovely new memories – they will be sure to bring a smile to your face in the years to come. Welcome!

This is how to get to Åland!____________ 78 Maps_______________________________ 80

Self-government Åland is the oldest autonomous region in Europe as well as the smallest. Åland was granted autonomy after a decision was issued by the League of Nations in Geneva in 1921. A strong movement in Åland had been campaigning for its incorporation into Sweden, but Finland refused to relinquish control. The decision issued in Geneva became a compromise. Åland’s first parliamentary body, with 30 members (today called the Parliament of Åland) held its first plenary session on 9 June 1922. The Parliament of Åland passes legislation on the economy, education, transportation and health care. The Government of Åland, Parliament and regional administration offices are housed in the Åland Parliament Building, which is located on the Mariehamn market square. From June 2021 to June 2022, “Åland 100 år” will be celebrated with a variety of activities.

Symbols In 1954, Åland introduced its own flag - a red and yellow cross on a field of blue. Åland has its own postal service, which issues its own stamps. Many of these stamps have won awards in international competitions. Åland has its own license plates for motor vehicles. These all begin with the identifier ÅL.

Currency

Islands of Peace

Åland’s currency is the euro and both Åland and Finland are in the Eastern European time zone. When it is 12 noon in Sweden, it is 1:00pm in Åland.

Åland is known as the Islands of Peace. Åland has no defence forces or active military bases. Ålanders are exempt from military conscription in the Finnish Defence Forces.

Population What a pleasing development – more and more people want to live in Åland! Over the past few years, Åland’s population has grown by 200-300 persons and will soon reach the 30,000 mark. Nearly 12,000 people live in Mariehamn, Åland’s only city. The official language in Åland is Swedish.

Åland – Always close to the sea To get to Åland you’ll need to cross the sea - what will you find when you arrive? Seafarers and boat builders? IT experts and chip manufacturers? Farmers and opera singers? There’s a simple answer: All of the above and then some. Åland is just this diverse. Just as active and modern as it is tranquil and traditional. Åland is a patchwork of islands strewn across the middle of the Baltic Sea. It has one city, Mariehamn, and a vibrant countryside. You’ll always be close to the sea, washed by briny sea breezes. Åland is a country in the middle – a mixture of Sweden and Finland seasoned with influences from the time when Åland was part of the Russian Empire. Today, Åland is self-governing and, thanks to its autonomy, able to create a society according to its own needs and conditions. THE ÅLANDERS are an enterprising people. They are used to doing things themselves and relying on their own abilities. But, they never turn away from the world at large, either. They have sailed the seven seas and returned with new ideas

and dreams. In many cases, they also came home with the wherewithal to realise them. IN ÅLAND, tradition and modern thinking go hand in hand. Windmills are restored and midsummer wreaths are made while high-tech companies serve customers all over the world. These two worlds can easily be brought together on such a small scale. THE CLIMATE is temperate and summers are typically sunny. Åland is said to have the most hours of sunshine in the Nordic countries from May to August. It tends to be windy – usually blowing in from the southwest – and numerous wind turbines provide Åland with green power.

ÅLAND’S ORIGINAL centre is where the village of Långsbergsöda is located today. This is where the very first Ålanders arrived. One might wonder just how they managed to find their way to Åland, which was an expanse of barren islands in the middle of the wide open sea, but the waters surrounding it were rich with seals, fish and sea birds and the first Ålanders were devoted hunters and fishers. IF YOU WOULD like to learn more about Åland, visit the Cultural History Museum of Åland. A new permanent exhibition presents 7,500 years of Åland history, from the first inhabitants in the Stone Age to modern-day society.

It’s easy to fall in love with islands here How many islands can you visit in one day? It’s a legitimate question to ask in Åland. The main island is surrounded by scores and scores of islands big and small, all peppered across one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world. It’s easy to fall in love with islands in Åland - to start collecting them, visiting as many as possible. Most people arrive in Åland on one of the big passenger ships, coming ashore on the main island, which many Ålanders refer to as the mainland. THIS IS WHERE you’ll find Mariehamn, Åland’s one and only city, which is surrounded by a rich, vibrant countryside. The main island is ringed by thousands upon thousands of islands, both big and small. Many of these are inhabited all year

Å LA N D T R AV E L M A G A Z I NE 2020

round and have daycare centres, schools and grocery shops, not to mention cottage villages, restaurants and guesthouses, which welcome visitors. INTER-ISLAND FERRIES, which also carry cars and bicycles, make runs from the main island out to the inhabited islands several times a day all year round. It’s quite an experience to sit out on the deck and watch the beautiful archipelago from your high ferry perch. Bridges and causeways have been built between many of the islands.

6

IN OTHER WORDS, it’s quite convenient to drive or bike around the spectacular archipelago. You can stay on an island for a day or two and then move on. If you’d like to find your inner Robinson Crusoe, you can rent a cottage on its own little island and have it all to yourself. MANY COMING TO ÅLAND from the east take the Archipelago Trail, where you take an inter-island ferry from Osnäs or Galtby in the Turku archipelago. And, you’ll get an extra dose of islands to boot.

Entertainment or the beach it’s all just a stone’s throw away Everything is close by in Mariehamn – beaches, entertainment and shopping. The best, simplest way to get around is by bicycle or on foot. Mariehamn is a lovely holiday city, where stress and long queues are unfamiliar concepts. A city where nature and entertainment of all kinds can be found side by side. You can saunter along at a leisurely pace and still manage to get in a full day. If you’re pressed for time, you can rent a bicycle and pedal around town. THE CITY CENTRE and its pedestrian boulevard Torggatan is convenient for shopping. Here. you’ll find both Ålandic handicrafts and speciality boutiques with popular brand name products and second-hand goods. Cafés and restaurants line the streets and, in the evening, the city’s pubs, bars and nightclubs open their

doors. Many of these establishments offer live music. If you want to take a dip in the sea, you can actually do it right in the middle of the city. There are several beaches from which to choose. YOU CAN TAKE a relaxing day cruise on an old-fashioned steamer-style excursion boat with meal service on board. You can even rent a boat yourself and take a spin out on the inlet, or take a stroll along the beautiful shoreline and across forested meadows. If you’d like to learn more about Åland’s history, just head over to one of the city’s museums. Mariehamn was founded in

1861 while Åland was under Russian rule. The matriarch of the city is none other than Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Russian Czar Alexander II. THE PLAN of the city was modern for its time, with large, rectangular lots and straight streets. This prevented the spread of fire, which was the scourge of cities with timbered houses. Today, buildings are set much closer to one another and the large lots have been divided into several smaller ones. A broad esplanade, lined by linden trees, runs from the western harbour to the eastern harbour, and is one of the city’s most well known landmarks.

Mariehamn – A city for seafarers guano for shipment to London. The voyage had gone well and the crew was looking forward to spending Christmas with their families. However, just a few nautical miles from Mariehamn, the ship ran into heavy weather and ran aground. Twelve men were lost and four managed to The barque Plus. survive. The Plus lies at a depth of 20 to 30 metres and is today a popular spot for sport diving. The Åland Maritime Museum also has an exhibit with items salvaged from the sunken barque, Plus. In addition to these, the anchor outside the entrance door and the anchor and chain in the park to the south of the museum are from the Plus.

If you had to choose only one label for Mariehamn, the choice would be an easy one – A city for seafarers. Ever since the city was founded, it has been home to successful shipowners. Why is Mariehamn located right here, on a small peninsula sandwiched between two bays? There was a very good reason for this when the city was founded in 1861. It allowed for the building of two very good harbours. One in the east, in a sheltered bay, primarily for the domestic passenger steamships of the day. Another in the west for the larger sailing ships which needed deeper water. THE FIRST MAJOR SHIPOWNER in Mariehamn was the merchant Nikolai Sittkoff. A statue of Sittkoff stands outside the shopping centre that bears his name. Many have followed in his footsteps, including August Troberg, Gustaf Erikson, Hugo Lundqvist and Algot Johansson, who owned Finland’s largest shipping line in the 1960s. The profits they brought home have contributed to Åland’s prosperity. At the same time, of course, they could also suffer big losses. A major disaster happened on 14 December 1933. The barque Plus was on its way home to Åland after sailing the world for just over a year. It had carried lumber to Africa and then headed north again via the Seychelles, where the Plus had taken a load of

MARIEHAMN IS STILL very much a maritime city. Large passenger ships come and go in the western harbour, several times a day, all year round. Numerous shipping lines have their headquarters in Mariehamn and many Ålanders work at sea. Since 1868, deckhands and engine room personnel have been trained in Mariehamn.

talks about life at sea! Could a maritime city have a better symbol than the world’s only sailing ship that has been preserved in its original condition? The Pommern, which is moored in the western harbour, is now better than ever before. Join the crew for a voyage of a hundred days at sail! Just look at the photo above! It was taken on 4 March 1934, when the Pommern was heading toward Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. The crew had survived terrible hurricane conditions through the night, with massive waves

Å LA N D T R AV E L M A G A Z I NE 2020

crashing over the decks. This night was later described as the worst in the ship’s history. In the photo you can see heavy lines pulled across the ship. These were set for the crew to hold on to when

moving about the deck. Might that be the captain at the far right, standing tall on the rolling deck without holding on to anything and a rope tied around his waist? What’s going through his mind at that moment? What is his assessment of the situation? THE MUSEUM SHIP POMMERN is the pride of Mariehamn and all of Åland. Nowhere else in the world is there a ship like the Pommern, which has remained practical-

www.visitaland.com

ly unchanged since her construction in Scotland in 1903. The Ålandic shipowner, Gustaf Erikson (also known as the “King of sailing ships”), purchased the Pommern in 1923. Under his ownership, she mainly carried wheat between England and Australia. When she had reached the end of her service life, Gustaf Erikson’s heirs donated the Pommern to the City of Mariehamn. IN RECENT YEARS, Åland has invested

ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2020

heavily in the Pommern. A new quay with a built-in dock was constructed to protect the ship, and all new shipboard experiences await the visitor. DECKHAND Johan Strömberg, cook Henry Nilsson and five other crew members will take visitors on a voyage from Mariehamn to Port Victoria in South Australia and back again. Walk around the vessel, take a peek at the galley, the crew quarters and captain’s stateroom, and listen to the

15

crew’s experiences and thoughts. Young visitors can follow Ruby the ship’s rat and her life on board the Pommern. THE ENTIRE SHIP is more accessible than before - visitors can now go to the various decks and there is also a lift. In steerage, visitors can try their hand at different activities, such as sailmaking and dancing. In the mammoth hold at the bottom of the ship, visitors can experience weather and wind with an audiovisual presentation.

Nature’s own remedy A healthy dose of nature is the only way to heal. You relax, breathe easier and think more clearly. And, best of all, experiences in nature are free, don’t need to be booked in advance and can be had every day the whole year round. In Åland, you’re always close to nature, and the variety you’ll encounter is amazing for such a small place. From the smooth, red, weather-worn rocks of the outer archipelago to enchanting spruce forests filled with deer. And between these, forested meadows sprinkled with wood anemones, cowslips and rare orchids. Could it be any easier to get your fill of nature’s own medicine?

This might be a series of large rollers, a narrow slackline or any one of a dozen obstacles that swings and sways. A visit to Åland’s first Flow Park, which is located in Vårdö, will be sure to boost your adrenaline levels. The adventure course is built on three levels. Anyone who is at least 7 years of age and 120 cm tall may do the course. Visitors are given an orientation before starting and all climbers are provided with a helmet and safety harness.

The most daring eagerly make their way between the trees, crossing on swinging car tyres and slacklines 15 metres above the ground. Others choose to stay a bit closer to the ground. The Flow Park adventure course is a place for challenging yourself and keeping active all rolled into one. For anyone wanting a nature experience at ground level, there is cycling, paddling and a whole host of other activities in Åland. The climber moves slowly but surely through the adventure course, from one swinging car tyre to the next. And the next. There’s a 15-metre drop to the ground below and a ways to go to the

is a wide variety of alternatives from which to choose. You can find yourself a base somewhere and make day trips, depending on how you feel and what the weather gives you (i.e. headwinds or tailwinds). Or you could plan a cycling tour, staying at different places each night. In recent years, Åland has invested in its light traffic infrastructure, with new cycling routes being built along some of the main roads. One eventful two-day tour would be to start from Mariehamn and cycle north to Geta, where you can stay overnight in a hilltop cottage. Then, on the next day, continue your tour to Skarpnåtö in Hammarland before returning to Mariehamn. Along the way, you can visit medieval churches, enjoy delicious meals and home-baked coffee bread, take in an enchanting sunset from a rocky hilltop

(weather permitting), visit the Sålis military battery for a taste of history from World War I, and stop by a real ceramics workshop. There are many other routes from which to choose, particularly in the archipelago to the east of Mariehamn. There, you will be able to take a break from pedalling with passages on inter-island ferries. IF YOU NEED SOME HELP planning your route, just turn to Viking Line and Eckerö Linjen. They offer cycling packages which include a bike, helmet, ready-made tour itineraries, lodging and delicious meals. from which to choose. Many of these have been improved during the past few years, with better markings and more info-boards. The latest addition is the St. Olov Waterway pilgrimage route, which opened in 2019 and runs throughout Åland. JUST ONE LOOK at a map of Åland and it will be plain to see that it is positively made for watersports – paddling, surfing, kite surfing and jet-skiing. There is water in all directions, with both calm inlets and the wide open sea. There is no shortage of islands to land on – maybe even just to stop for a refreshing dip. With proper planning, you can paddle from the main island to one of the inhabited islands of the archipelago and then take an inter-island ferry back. There are even operators which rent equipment and organise guided tours. WHEN THE WINTER ICE has settled in for the season, a whole host of new experiences awaits. There seem to be more and more long-distance skaters out on the ice – but this shouldn’t come as a surprise. More and more people long to glide across the smooth, mirror surface of the ice and, if conditions permit, even skate out to the edge of the archipelago, where sea and sky blend seamlessly into one another. Åland also has several lakes, which freeze solid early in the season and are ideal for proper day skates. If you’d like to cap off an active day out with yoga, just head over to any one of the gyms or yoga studios offering guided classes in the various yoga styles.

More seaside views on the renovated Slottsbana golf course A Danish golf course designer came to Åland to redesign Slottsbana, Åland’s oldest course. His guiding principle? To make the course’s beautiful seaside location even more beautiful. The new Slottsbana course will open, as planned, just after midsummer this year, offering a whole new playing experience. Golf course designer Philip Spogárd has totally re-imagined the course. He has added completely new holes, combined two holes to make a new, longer one, and changed the direction on several holes. Groves have been cut down, red granite rock faces have been exposed and several of the tees have been placed at higher elevations. In short, this means that Slottsbana will offer the golfer new views over the course. There will be even more beautiful views of the sea from all 18 holes, and the medieval

castle will become an even bigger focal point at some holes. MANY OF THE HOLES run right alongside the shoreline, where golfers have to make adjustments based on their ability. Do you dare make a shot over the water to hit the green or will you take a safer route? The quality of the renovated course is much higher and the greens are considerably larger than before. The Åland Golf Club, which runs the Slottsbana course, has hosted thousands of satisfied guest golfers since its inception in 1983. The Club also runs Kungsbana, which is an 18-hole course in a more forested

setting, and Prinsessa, a course with six par3 holes. A practice area, pro shop, dressing rooms with showers and sauna, and a restaurant with outdoor terrace complete the whole. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO golf more during your visit to Åland, you can head over to Eckerö Golf on the west coast. Eckerö Golf also offers a special new feature – four tees designed to suit both children and adults, beginners and more advanced golfers. When driving from the shortest tee, the course length is just over 3,200 metres and from the longest, over 5,700 metres. It is much more fun to play when everyone – regardless of their skill level – has a chance to make the hole at their handicap. The course is located close to the ferry harbour in Eckerö and there are several lodging alternatives nearby.

“Warmly recommended” “A professional, entertaining guide. Really knew the area well and where to find pike. Plenty of delicious food for lunch and just a great time all around. Warmly recommended!” Åland’s fishing guides often receive praise on Facebook. This really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The work these guides do is their great passion, i.e. sport fishing all year round, and their mission is to ensure that everyone else gets as much out of fishing as they do. Fishing guides provide both equipment and knowledge. They have well-equipped boats and know just where the fish are biting on any given day. And, when it’s time for a little bite to eat and something refreshing to drink, they’ll serve up a treat from their own larder. Hire a fishing guide for a day – or even several days! After this, you’ll be ready to head out and make those big catches on your own, if you should so desire. ÅLAND IS A FISHING PARADISE all year round. A speciality is the voracious pike, which can be fished with both spinners and flies. And, if you get tired of pike, there are also plenty of perch and pike-perch to be had! Åland has beautiful lowland shorelines facing the open sea that are tailor-made for fly fishing, whether from the shore or on a float. In the winter, when the ice has set, anglers can head out with their jigs and a thermos. BOOK YOUR FISHING PACKAGE, with everything you’ll need already included, through one of the tour operators listed on page 28–29 or directly with a fishing guide.

Fishing permits online! The waters surrounding Åland are divided into several large and small fishing permit areas. All visiting anglers must have a valid fishing permit. Fishing permits may be purchased at www.visitaland.com Cottage villages and shops in Åland also sell fishing permits over the counter.

FOOD IN THE TOWN CENTRE ENJOY SEAFOOD BY THE PIER

Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan has a great location in Mariehamn. Just a stone’s throw from the town square, yet at the pier with a nice sea view over the bay and marina in the Eastern Harbour. The restaurant offers a special atmosphere because the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, which gives an illusion of being outdoors when indoors. In late summer and autumn evenings there is extra magic in the air when the natural daylight is shifting into a starry sky. The open kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. You can see the chefs working next to a big stone oven made of local recycled red bricks.

Mariehamn attracts visitors with good food and entertainment. Take a food walk and discover four restaurants with atmosphere, style and variety – everything from great lunches, seafood and à la carte dishes to stone oven baked pizzas. In between you can play adventure golf.

The place for horses and dogs Åland is a great place for horse and dog lovers. You’ll run into like-minded people all over the place, and you can train in top-class facilities. Ålandic dressage rider, Caroline Anderson-Granlund, has realised her dream. Her newly built Granlunda gård equestrian centre welcomes guest riders and horses for training and private lessons. Horses are stabled in the guest stables, while riders stay in Granlunda’s hotel. HIMMYRA GÅRD is another newly built equestrian centre of the highest standard. It offers training packages for riders with their own horse. There are also several riding schools that welcome guest riders, both for riding in the riding hall and the surrounding countryside. Riding camps are also offered. TROTTING ENTHUSIASTS won’t be left wanting in Åland. The world-class track for the Ålandstravet trotting race is located just a few kilometres from the Mariehamn city centre. Numerous trotting races are held here from May to October. Bettors are welcome to put a few euros on their favourite horses. Just outside the racetrack is a multipurpose equestrian centre, which includes a riding oval for competitions with Icelandic horses. Åland is also ideal for dogs and their owners. Each September, some 1,700 dogs are entered in the venerable Åland Dog Show. AGILITY ENTHUSIASTS have no shortage of options. An outdoor course has been open to the public for some time and a centre built exclusively for various types of dog training opened last year. Åland is perfect for a sporting mini-adventure! Åland has the most sport halls per capita in all of the Nordic countries! This was announced by Åland daily newspaper Ålandstidningen last year, counting all the sport halls and facilities throughout the region. It was an impressive list. Åland has invested heavily in sports and has numerous sport halls located throughout the island province. It’s something of a challenge to find a sport that can’t be played indoors. Floorball, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and futsal can be played in any of the seven multipurpose sport halls located throughout Åland. Allhallen in Eckerö is big enough to fit a full-size football pitch! Then, there are several speciality halls for tennis, badminton, gymnastics, ice hockey, curling, judo and other martial arts. Last year saw the opening of a new

sport facility – a padel court. Vikingahallen in Jomala boasts its own squash court. OUTSIDE, there are several football pitches, even some with artificial turf to allow for year-round play. A full new track and field arena was built in the south part of Mariehamn and inaugurated last summer. The arena offers state-of-the-art track and field facilities. AND, BEST OF ALL, booking these sport facilities is a snap! Keep this in mind the next time your organisation is planning a

training camp. A sporting mini-adventure awaits in Åland. The ferry trip is an experience in and of itself, and you can stay close to any of the halls, which are often within easy walking distance. This is certainly something that is appreciated by all visitors. Shorter travel distances mean less stress and more time to train and socialise. ÅLAND HAS a long list of races for elite and experienced athletes. Just choose the races you want to compete in and start training!

Wow! (Almost) anything can happen in Åland! Åland is a place of surprises. Unexpected encounters, discoveries and adventures can pop up around every corner – always when you least expect it.

Pär Björkman, Picture Editor in Chief at Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, drove out into the Åland countryside and saw a sign: Fotografiskt Museum (Åland Camera Museum) He followed the sign and found himself a real gem – a museum filled with photographic equipment from the earliest days of photography to today. His visit resulted in Dagens Nyheter donating its collection of photographic equipment (from 1910 t0 2000) to the museum last year. The donated collection includes a mobile darkroom used in the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, among other things. The collection couldn’t have found a better home! The museum, whose driving spirit is Olle Strömberg, is considered to be one of the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. Talk about passion and interest!

The electric butter cooler Buttercup is a unique Ålandic invention. It is a stylish addition to any table and keeps the butter inside spreadable. These are manufactured in Åland, but are available for sale all over the world. Talk about great ideas and ingenuity!

If you can make chips in the US, then you surely can in Åland, too! That was the thinking of several enterprising businessmen in Åland in the 1960s – and the rest is history. Today, Ålandic farmers grow potatoes in large quantities and the factory in Åland supplies all of Finland with snacks. Talk about going for the gold!

Wait a minute – can that be? Is that Bill Clinton, the former president of the United States, standing there on a stage in Mariehamn? Of course it is. He came to Åland one July evening last year, invited by successful businessman Anders Wiklöf, to talk about the environmental challenges of the future. Wiklöf celebrates his birthday by hosting a big free concert. Famous artists usually perform and, last year, President Clinton joined the festivities. Talk about a surprise!

scale and people from all over Russia came here – military personnel, stonecutters, merchants, journeymen, carpenters and convicts. CIVILIAN SOCIETY, with everything from shops to schools and pharmacies, sprouted up around the fortifications. Bomarsund became Åland’s economic and political centre, with between 3,000 and 3,500 people living in the area. High-ranking officers and others of similar status lived an upper class lifestyle, replete with champagne and caviar. Over the years, Makeyev became an influential person and renowned as a philanthropist, who gave “hard cash” to the poor. When he died in 1853, it was for this reason that his grave should naturally be a stately monument. On the island of Prästö there are several burial grounds from the period of Russian rule. THE FORTRESS was never completed to the extent intended in the original plans. In 1854, it was taken by French and English forces and later demolished by explosives. All civilian buildings, many done in the Empire style, were burned to the ground. Visitors to Bomarsund today can see the remains of the main fortress, defence towers and scores of foundations from

Merchant Kosma Makeyev from St. Petersburg, Russia died in Åland in 1853 and was buried on the island of Prästö underneath a stately monument. He first arrived in Åland in 1809. It was a time of great upheaval – the map had just been redrawn and the balance of power had shifted. During the peace following the Finnish War of 1808-09 between Sweden and Russia, Sweden was forced to cede all of its eastern provinces – Åland and the rest of Finland – to Russia. This meant that the new border between Russia and Sweden had to be drawn straight through the Sea of Åland and Åland became, to say the least, a strategic spot as the westernmost outpost of the Russian Empire. AFTER THE WAR ended in 1809, Russia sent a regiment to Åland. The regiment was joined by a merchant – a quartermaster - who supplied the military personnel with the goods they needed. This was none other than the above-mentioned Kosma Makeyev, who, according to the historical description, sold his goods “at very reasonable prices”. The Russians were not satisfied with having only a single regiment in Åland. They wanted a coastal fortress and began construction on one in 1830. Their plans were grand in

civilian buildings. Hiking trails with additional information on the sites pass through the beautiful nature of the area, and there is a small museum in a former pilot’s house on Prästö island. ANOTHER REMNANT of the Russian period in Åland is the stately Mail and Customs House in Eckerö, which was completed in 1828. The building is open to the public and has handicrafts on display as well as for sale. You will be taken a few hundred more years into the past with a visit to the ruins of Kastelholm castle. It is situated on the shore of a bay and most likely dates back to the 12th century. The Jan Karlsgården open air museum is just adjacent to the castle ruins. Older buildings that had served various purposes were moved here. A variety of activities are organised here and at the castle.

Pub Stallhagen.

Delicious and sustainable go hand in hand A map of Åland is hanging on the wall. The pub’s local suppliers are indicated on the map. These include farmers who grow fruits and vegetables, sheep breeders who supply fresh meat and a mill which sells ecologically produced meal. At Pub Stallhagen, you can enjoy delicious food with a good conscience – locally produced as much as is possible Åland was the first in Finland to certify restaurants according to the Green Key sustainability standard. PUB STALLHAGEN, under the leadership of Johanna Dahlgren, was among the first of the businesses in Åland to do this. In order to be awarded with the Green Key certification, a business must meet several criteria. In order to keep it, the business must show improvement every year. Stallhagen has an extensive network of local suppliers, uses energy sparingly, composts its food waste and rejects anything that does not fit its philosophy. This includes energy-consuming ice, the socalled “mandatory” lemon slices for fish dishes, and soft drinks from the big soft drink manufacturers. DO YOU WANT to know what Pub Stallhagen will be serving next month? Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. You can always

Å LA N D T R AV E L M A G A Z I NE 2020

choose between a fish, meat or vegetarian dish, but the catch and pick of the day is whatever happens to be available at that time. STALLHAGEN CAN stay true to its sustainable Green Key commitment thanks to all the devoted and ambitious farmers working all over the Åland countryside, which is as vibrant as they come. Ranks of apple trees stand branch to branch. There are scores of onion and vegetable patches, cows and sheep graze and artisan foods are exploding in popularity. Many farms refine their own produce – milk is turned into all kinds of cheeses, meat becomes mouthwatering mettwurst and other charcuterie, berries are cooked into juices and curds, and ecologically grown grains are ground into meal. Many of the artisan food producers participate in annual taste competitions outside Åland, bringing home some pretty impressive prizes.

46

An excellent way to explore all the good things on the menu is to go out and visit the farms, which are open during the Åland in Greenery open house event (23– 24 May) and the Åland Harvest Festival (18–20 September). ANOTHER WAY is to look for local produce in grocery stores. You’ll always find a wide selection of dairy company Ålandsmejeriet’s outstanding, award-winning cheeses, beers from Stallhagen and Open Water Brewery, and breads from local bakeries. MANY OTHER restaurants do the same as Stallhagen – they favour local produce and serve dishes that combine Åland’s food traditions with modern influences. Five of these have qualified for the White Guide Nordic: Nautical, Indigo and Kvarter5 in Mariehamn, Smakbyn in Kastelholm and Havsvidden in Geta.

The novel Ice by Ulla-Lena Lundberg, who was born on Åland, won the Finlandia Prize in 2012. “A quietly epic journey into a life and mindset of an island community, filled with humor and empathy.”

Life in Åland on the pages of a book Katrina came to Åland and married a sailing man. She is the main character in a novel that has been translated into over 20 languages and tells the story of life in the archipelago.

Ulla-Lena Lundberg.

Pamela Eriksson.

THROUGH THE CENTURIES, life in Åland has certainly provided enough drama to fill the pages of a book. Many authors, both today and in years past, have found plenty of material in actual events that they have been able to embellish in their own way. SALLY SALMINEN was born in the village of Vargata on Vårdö island in 1906. She came from modest beginnings and, like many other youths of her day, she emigrated to the United States, finding work as a servant for a wealthy family in New York. Her life was changed completely when she entered her book in a writing competition held by a Finnish publisher in 1936 – and won! The main character, Katrina, in the eponymous winning novel is a strong woman, who does everything in her power to ensure her family’s well-being in a society where the class divisions between crofters and wealthy shipowners are enormous. The novel was translated into many languages, including English. THE MARIEHAMN CITY LIBRARY contains just about everything that has ever been written about Åland in its Alandica collection. There are roughly 10 fiction works in English at the library. In addition to this, there is a wide variety of non-fiction literature in English. STOP BY AND BROWSE the shelves. If you’d like to read epic tales about magnificent sailing ships there’s plenty to choose from, including Pamela Eriksson’s book, “The Duchess”. It tells the story of the grand vessel, Herzogin Cecilie, which was owned by the renowned Ålandic shipowner, Gustaf Erikson. The “Duchess” ran aground off the coast of England in 1936 and was lost.

Although mezzosoprano Jenny Carlstedt performs on stages all over the world, she still calls Åland home.

What a musical island! Are Ålanders especially musical? Or are they just very adept at refining their talents? It’s difficult to say, but the fact is that many Ålanders have sung and performed on stages all over the world, and musical events of all shapes and sizes are held in Åland. Song and jazz festivals. Organ concerts. More than a week’s worth of pop and rock music. World-class chamber music and bold, home-grown opera productions. Dancing band music for summer evenings. FANS OF MUSIC, regardless of the genre, will find something to their liking in Åland, with performances by foreign and Ålandic artists alike. And there are certainly many from Åland. Opera singers Sofie Asplund, Frida Österberg, Jenny

Carlstedt, Therese Karlsson and Philip Björkqvist started their careers as singers in Åland before heading out to perform on the big stages of the world. Every now and then they come home to put on their own concerts. ÅLANDERS are also active choir singers. They sing in a variety of styles and enthusiastically join major projects led by Åland jazz singer Johanna Grüssner, who is also well-known outside of Åland.

THEATRE AMATEURS also get into the act by participating in both well known musicals and their own projects. Alandica Culture & Congress in Mariehamn has a large auditorium that seats 600. A perfect stage for both theatre and musical performances. This is the place to see foreign artists, who will gladly make a stop in Åland on their Nordic tours, as well as Åland’s own stars.

Artistic encounter – Billgren vs. Wilén Expectations are high. What will artists Ernst Billgren and Jonas Wilén have to offer in their joint exhibition at the Åland Islands Art Museum this summer? Ernst Billgren is a major name in Sweden’s art scene. Jonas Wilén is one of the most well known artists in modern-day Åland. They are said to have a lot in common in that they are versatile, have an intelligent sense of humour and love to create fantastic interpretations of animals. ÅLAND ISLANDS ART MUSEUM has invited both to exhibit their work, which will be on display from May to September. Precisely what it will be remains to be seen. “Something new, something old,

something borrowed”, said Billgren in a newspaper interview. Wilén, on the other hand, wants to explore the human psyche. Don’t miss the highlight of the summer at the museums on the Mariehamn market square! THE NATURE, people and cultural landscape of Åland have inspired many artists through the years. The Åland Islands Art Museum also has a selection of artwork related to Åland in its permanent exhibition. The Art Museum shares a building with

the Cultural History Museum of Åland, both of which are open for most of the day the whole year through. ANOTHER ART MUSEUM, the Önningeby colony museum, exhibits paintings by members of the artists’ colony that ran in the village of the same name from the 1880s and for several decades afterwards. Many famous artists from both Finland and Sweden joined the colony, with many finding inspiration in the village and its surroundings.

This is the place for families with children! A lovely day at the seashore. A walk among the flowers. A spot of fishing from the pier. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that are the best for kids. It’s easy for families with kids to have fun in Åland. Because the distances between places are short, the smallest members of your family won’t have to endure long car trips. Sometimes, people just want go where the wind blows them. Find a lovely little beach somewhere, dig in the sand and just be. In Åland, there are shallow sandy beaches, beaches with smooth, rock expanses, and beaches with diving platforms. Both www.visitaland.com

swimming centres have separate sections devoted exclusively to children. IF YOU’RE STAYING IN A COTTAGE, you will often have access to a boat and fishing grounds. You can have yourself quite an adventure just by rowing to a nearby reef and hooking a perch. On your way home, you can land on a little islet and explore a bit. Nature has so much to discover: flowers, butterflies, seed pods and stones. Many of the shorter hiking trails, such as the trail that passes through forested meadows at Ramsholmen or the forest path at Godby, are also suitable for children. A favourite trail is Trollstigen (“Gnome Trail”) on Getabergen Hill, with its tale of the giant

named Singer and the cunning ice gnomes. SOMETIMES, you might prefer organised activities. Several museums, such as the Åland Maritime Museum, Cultural History Museum of Åland, Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum and Jan Karlsgården open air museum, have special programmes intended just for kids. Families with children can spend an entire day in Eckerö. Aimed at families, Smart Park offers a wide variety of fun activities and Leklandet has all manner of inflatable castles and forts for the kids to bounce and tumble in. Right next to Leklandet there is a game enclosure, with such animals as deer and wild boar, and a beach with canoes and watercycles.

Then, a cottage stay is for you, and there is a wide range of alternatives available. There are cottage “villages”, which have multiple cottages in a given area, or single, standalone cottages. The former is for anyone wanting to socialise with their neighbours. The latter is for those who want peace and solitude, possibly even on an island all to themselves. In order to ensure that you find just what you’re looking for, check out the services offered, such as access to a rowboat, bicycles, canoes, meals and shops.

More sustainable with Green Key Many hotels, restaurants and other businesses in Åland are certified to display the Green Key label. This shows that the business is committed to the sustainable use of resources and constantly works to reduce its environmental impact. Check out the list of Green Key businesses at visitaland.com/ greenkey-blueflag!

THERE ARE COTTAGES located throughout Åland. If you choose a cottage on one of the islands in the archipelago – Föglö, Kumlinge, Brändö, Sottunga or Kökar – you will be taking one of the inter-island ferries from the main island. The trip can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two and a half hours, depending on the island you have chosen. There are also guesthouses and hotels in the countryside. IN MARIEHAMN, you’ll always be close to shopping and entertainment as well as to the nearest beaches. There is no shortage of hotels, guesthouses and cottages to choose from, all within walking distance of the city sights. And don’t forget – Wherever you are staying on the main island, the distances are short and you’ll be able to drive quickly to any of Åland’s sights and activities. You can stay in Mariehamn even if you want to go fishing or golfing – and vice versa. You can also stay on the coast, even if you want to go shopping and visit museums. CAN’T DECIDE? Just contact Viking Line and Eckerö Linjen, which have a wide range of choices available and can help you find the alternative that will best suit your own needs. A bank for people who choose to follow their own path. An independent bank, with Åland common sense and a global view Ever since the Bank of Åland (Ålandsbanken) was founded in 1919, our focus has been very clear. We have built our operations in harmony with Åland Island entrepreneurs, who over time havenot only expanded their businesses but have also benefited the Åland community. Our operations span a broad horizon, from private individuals who need a bank they can rely on to well-established corporations that are internationally successful and growing small businesses that were recently only good ideas. We are now more than 650 people, working in nine different locations towards the same objectives. Magical experiences on your own boat Rödhamn is one of the most popular guest harbours in Åland. It is perfectly situated, with the open sea on one side and sheltering archipelago on the other. Add a charming restaurant, a museum and a wood-fired sauna on the smooth shoreline rocks and you have yourself an absolutely wonderful and unforgettable setting. Many people choose to come to Åland with their own boat. Those coming from the east get to pass through an archipelago, with islands stretching off into the distance as far as the eye can see. Those arriving from the west will cross the Sea of Åland, which is so large that no land will be visible at the halfway point of the crossing. ÅLAND’S ARCHIPELAGO is a veritable paradise for boaters. Its nature is like nothing else in the world and the route possibilities are nearly endless. Fairways are rarely crowded and guest harbours

and piers can be found in just about every corner of Åland. Circumnavigating the main island is just one of several popular alternatives.

seaman’s chapel can be found in the island group as can inscriptions made by seamen in the shoreline rocks. There is also a museum in a former radio beacon here.

FEW PASS UP Mariehamn, which has two popular guest harbours – MSF (Mariehamn Yacht Club) on the east side and ÅSS (Åland Yacht Club) on the west. Another guest harbour in Åland is Rödhamn, which is located ten nautical miles from Mariehamn. The harbour has a history: Seafarers have stopped here for centuries before making the crossing over the Sea of Åland. The remains of a tavern and

SOME OF THE HARBOURS are polar opposites. Havsvidden in the north of Åland sits next to the wide open sea, while Kastelholm is tucked right in the heart of Åland’s cultural landscape. There are also several guest harbours in the archipelago east of the main island. At these harbours, you can rent a bicycle after mooring your boat and explore an Ålandic village.

It’s easy to travel to Åland – the whole year round. You can choose to come by passenger ship, flight or interisland ferry. Åland has excellent connections with the outside world. The big passenger ships, which have large car decks, depart from two terminals in Sweden (Stockholm and Kapellskär) and three in Finland (Helsinki, Turku and Naantali). These ships depart several times a day all year round. Åland also has a direct connection to Tallinn, Estonia. Viking Line, Eckerö Linjen and Tallink ships offer a wide array of restaurants, entertainment and tax-free shopping, not to mention affordable fares. Flights from Sweden depart out of Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, and from Finland out of Helsinki and Turku.
