MJ rakes in 400 million since death in 2009

T

he king of pop is constantly the talk of the world with his new Xscape release, hologram, and apparently 12 more albums are due for release in the next 10 years. He may be dead but his brand certainly is not. The music industry is making mil-

lions out of this mans death and that doesn’t sit well with MJ fans but at the same time we are happy that the world is reminded of his legacy which needs to be known. What a catch 22! The biggest artist alive as well as being the biggest artist dead.

SPOTLIGHT

F

or fans of current chart hits and older styles of music alike, the arrival of Postmodern Jukebox at The Institute on the 16th June was a welcome change of pace.

The 11 strong band brought their mix of 1940’s charm with gusto, and after starting by asking everyone to get into the swing of the era, by not using their mobile phones or cameras, and just to enjoy the moment, they kicked it off with a bang. With Drue Davis as the Master of Ceremonies, after the first of a number of comical “short messages from our sponsor”, introduced the sublime Robyn Adele Anderson to perform a number of songs, including Thrift Shop, Don’t You Worry Child and Die Young. Ashley Stroud then took to the stage, belting out Dark Horse and Fancy, along with a dual tap dance solo with Alex MacDonald, who had tapped along to Die Young previously. After an amazing instrumental take on the Game of Thrones theme song by the band, Robyn returned with Gentlemen, Talk Dirty and Just Dance. Taking her place on stage after Robyn was the supremely talented Christina Gatti, performing renditions of Sweater Weather and the Beyoncé herself endorsed version of Drunk In Love. Our MC for the evening then took to the stage himself to own a Motown version of Nickelback’s How You Remind Me with Tim Kubart a.k.a. “Tambourine Guy” and Ashleigh. With further performances including We Can’t Stop, Timber and Burn, everyone returned to the stage for the finale of Get Lucky, including solos from every band member, rounding off a brilliant evening of musical festivities. Scott Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox will be returning to the UK in the not too distant future, so if you missed out this time, make sure you get your tickets for next time! I

got the new single link from Sony in my email by one of my favourite artists, when I saw his name I was verity excited as you do because it’s Usher.

Usher is someone I have interviewed on many occasions and grown up listening to. When it comes to the coolest of cool in R&B then it’s this guy, in terms of new

generation R&B as well as a trendsetter in fashion. This guy changed 90’s pop music making it extremely cool especially with the 1st no 1 single in the UK “U make me Wanna”, as well as “Nice and slow”, “U Turn”, “You got it bad”, “Yeah”, “Burn”, “U remind me” and many other hits.

COVER STORY Do you remember that 14 year old boy who burst onto the scene in the early 90’s with the Jodeci produced “Can you get with it” which was a video of him being escorted driving down the street slowly with him singing on the cadllac bonnet. Yes Usher is classic and he even said to me in a previous interview that he was the only one left, which was before we had Chris Brown, Omarian, Trey Songs, and even Justin Timberlake . At the time he said it he probably couldn’t be wrong as when it came to R&B he was the leader and even got approval being a great artist by his icon Michael Jackson who he also performed with at his 30th anniversary concert when he was alive. In my personal opinion in recent years his releases have been questionable, the vibes dramatically changed musically where we saw the R&B don transform into a David Guetta style artist and personally I wasn’t feeling that sound at all and all these artists say that they have to do dance to keep with the current trend but aren’t those artists meant to set the trend? I think now due to feedback and a drop in sales he has finally realised he should go back to what made him most successful and that is cutting edge

soul music. So back to the email I received from Sony - I didn’t even read the press release, I clicked straight into the track which also was the link to the video and at first, second, third, and fourth listening i didn’t buy into it, although it was Usher back as an R&B artist. The sound was not fitting but what happens you keep hearing a song and it gets into your head and then you are sucked in. As a DJ I said I couldn’t play this and until I heard the track at a local bar one night and it had everyone jumping, I still didn’t like it, but that was when I actually started to like the song. Maybe that was what I needed to see to feel the song. All the ladies were singing and getting down low crazy style to the song and now I’m obsessed with the recording and cant wait to play it myself! Yes I am now proud to represent the Usher street team once again! Good Kisser is a jazzy and soulful banger that hits you hard in the clubs very sexy and atmospheric. The video I actually liked better than the song at first as I was impressed with the direction, the dark dance moves and the seductive scenes with that hot chick that made me imagine being Usher! Ha! Now I am sold on the song and video. I am humming the Bang Bang Bang lines ever now and again. Is it Usher classic? I don’t think so but it’s a sure fire hit and it’s risky, got a new sound for the R&B of today Usher tricks me a lot with his music to be fair, there are many songs I’ve hated then loved. But I heard the remix featuring rising star Mila J and its like POW Usher is going in! New album to come this year and I hope to god its R&B, not saying I don’t like dance, but you ain’t a dance artist Usher! Good Kisser Out Now

Coming Soon Paolo Nutini LG Arena, Birmingham 5 November 2014

W

ithout doubt 2014 is the year of Paolo Nutini. Acclaimed third album ‘Caustic Love’ went straight in at number 1, quickly reaching platinum status, and now with his biggest tour to date scheduled for the autumn, Paolo Nutini looks set

to cement his place as one of the country’s leading artists. Currently playing a few dates in the USA, Paolo returns later this month for what promises to be a sensational Glastonbury performance on Friday 26th June (Other Stage). He is also performing as the penultimate act at this year’s T in the Park on Saturday 12th July and V Festival in August.

was one of the most talked about performers at SXSW this year. The ‘Crescendo EP’ will be released by Polydor Records on July 1st and will feature remixes by Icarus, Infinity Ink and Zed Bias. Following the release of the ‘Crecendo EP’ Jetta will be supporting John Newman on tour in the UK in October.

Let Young Lions ‘RAW’ in ‘16

T

he minute that England’s World Cup chances were officially ended, after Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0 to remove any mathematical hopes, the English press, unsurprisingly, did not take the news well, even if it was not a huge surprise. With the Three Lions finishing bottom of Group D, after a miserable tournament, it should be an ideal time to take stock of the situation at hand and look at the best way forward for the national team. While some England stalwarts were sizing up there individual international reputations, and futures, several young players such as Daniel Sturridge, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling, who were blooded in Brazil, did impress and, within the right

structure, should be ready to blossom, in time for the 2016 European Championships in France. After all it the relative performances of the young guns was the shining light in a sea of dull, ‘dish water’ showings on the World’s stage. England exit, with a solitary point and two goals to show for all the blood, sweat and millions of pounds spent, was hard to take, yet, fans of a certain vintage are mindful that this is nothing new. But why is it so regular? Why, since ‘66 and all that, do England fans build up so much expectations, before big tournaments, and cry for scapegoats and dig for excuses when what happened in Brazil happens?

Perhaps, for international football to flourish in this country, why not have players at every level ‘singing from the same hymn sheet,’ with ‘one voice,’ let the naturally gifted express themselves - if they make a mistake, let them have the courage and confidence to try again and let them entertain their demised loyal supporters. For the powers that be, at the helm of the game; for coaches like recently ‘former’ U19’s boss, Noel Blake, who were not scared to try something different, who helped develop a core of the young bloods on show in South America, can you really afford to lose to the national game? Come UEFA Euro 2016, there really should be no excuses.

house, teenage hissy fits, Caitlin has finally finished her GCSE’s. I cant remember me being like that when i took my exams (a few years ago haha) but no doubt I was. So congratulations to everyone out there who have finished their exams and studied hard, and await their results in August.

Hey Guys and Gals! Well im still hanging on in there and still trying to get used to all this hustle and bustle that’s surrounding me and the family, not too sure if I ever will though - but I’m gonna surf this wave and see where it takes me. Had a great day on Sunday at Planet Ice Coventry, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Charity - oh my days, haven’t been ice skating since I was about 14 years old and really didn’t hold much hope that I would actually stay standing upright - but I did, yay me. Took Gerrard with me and for someone who has never been ice skating in his life, he took off like an Olympic speed skater. Met some amazing people, we took part in an ice skating lesson, met some of the characters from Disney’s Frozen and above all made some well needed money for such a good cause. On another completely different end of the scale, I was invited to France to cook for a 80th Birthday party in a little bistro, called Chez Maebro in a small very beautiful village. A lot has been said about me and my friends and a lot of people presume we live on take outs and junk food, not in my house.

My kids have been brought up on fresh fruit and veg since they were babies, and thats mainly thanks to daddy dearest and his 4 allotments. One take out a week at a push for my gang. This experience was a million miles away from cooking at home, watched eagerly by a french chef, as I prepared the veg and gutted the fish, yep I definitely like to get

my hands in there when cooking. I must say even though I felt the pressure, I can stand the heat and will stay in the kitchen, dinner was served and they whooped it off, so I can safely say the French enjoyed my home made fish stew. Just before I sign off another column, after a few very hard stressful weeks of no sleep, constant tantrums, screaming around the
