Hackney WeekendHeadlinedby Jay Z & Rihanna Radio 1’s Big Weekend bucked the

trend for being held in venues off the beaten track; in celebration, or competition, of this year’s OlympicsHackney in East London was where all roads led to. Previous headliners included Lady Gaga, The Foo Fighters and Madonna, but this year’s lineup promised to leave the crowd begging for more. Rock lovers were entertained by Kasabian, who swam against the urban-pop tide including Trey Songz, Ed Sheeran and Nicki Minaj, who each packed out their stages with ease. Jay-Z later announced that this was a “Roc Nation party” as he brought out label employees Rihanna, MIA and Kanye West for a stunning headline spot that included an encore of recent hit ‘N***az in Paris’, which even got his wife Beyoncé moshing at the sidelines. As to be expected, most of the crowd had come to see Miss Fenty. The singer lived up to her raunchy image dressed in biker boots and a baggy T-shirt as she powered through a selection of her biggest hits. Jay-Z joined her towards the end of her set, leaving the crowd suitably pumped for closing number ‘We Found Love’. A fitting finale for a festival that lived up to its promise of being the biggest music event of the summer!.

ased in London’s Hyde Park, the music event is one of the more popular city festivals because of its calibre of world-famous performers. Friday’s traditionally quieter day included an eclectic mix of emerging hip-hop talent and top dance DJs. Childish Gambino had the crowds bouncing along to hits from his debut album Camp in a rare London performance, while Santogold enchanted spectators with her blend of tribal beats and pop hooks. Deadmau5 topped the bill with a hi-NRG set that reverberated across the borough of Westminster, making for one of the biggest raves the capital has ever seen.

1xtra Live featuring Trey Songz

Monday evening saw BBC Radio 1Xtra

launch its fifth annual 1Xtra live event at London’s Brixton Academy. Headline act Trey Songz took to the stage and charmed the crowd with his track Simply Amazing. His abs also made an appearance as he ripped his white vest off and thrust it into the willing hands of a screaming fan. Performing Bottoms Up without Nicki Minaj to do her rap clearly didn’t faze him as the crowd stepped in and recited every word. He finished the night by getting as close to the crowd as his bouncers would allow, and basking in the rapturous applause.

THE CLOTHES SHOW 2012 For all the fashion conscious amongst us, the Clothes Show

Live graced us with its stylish presence- giving Birmingham an extra Christmas bauble to add to the tree. The annual five-day event featured fashion shows, makeovers, the popular champagne bars and guests, including host Henry Holland, stylist Grace Woodward, Peter Andre and TV reality stars Sam Faiers and Amy Childs. The most eagerly awaited appearance without doubt was from boy band JLS- performing live with Dad-to-be Marvin impressing with his DJ sets at each performance in the Suzuki fashion Theatre. Friday’s fashion show, hosted by Chanel and Vivienne Westwood model Daisy Lowe, featured a dazzling array of outfits to keep the heaving crowd entertained,

fascinated and astounded. For those wanting a career in fashion, there were Q&A sessions with industry experts, career seminars and Poppy Disney interviewing CSL’s ethical ambassador VV Brown and fashion expert Caryn Franklin. The Show saw its first live appearance from Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model winner Letitia Herod and the other finalists who walked in shows throughout the day. Rounded out by a live appearance from JLS, Stooshe and X-Factors hunky trio Times Red- The Clothes Show Live brought the cold with it to Birmingham but also a fantastic and colourful spectacle.

BIG SCREEN - WHAT’S IN THE BOX

BIGScreen Edited by Ian McLaughlin

INSIDE:

An intelligent time-travel story, Superheroes finally rule the world and a brilliant James Bond back to form for his 50th Anniversary! Here’s my personal choice of the top five 2012 movies in what has been a great entertaining year! MARVEL ITEM 47 STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

BIGScreen

TOP 5 MOVIES

Looper

Edited by Ian McLaughlin

5

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano Director: Rian Johnson Worldwide Box Office Gross: $162,569,599

In the future, time travel is banned but the mob still uses it to send targets back in time where they are eliminated by waiting assassins. When one of the mob’s killers (GordonLevitt) recognises his next target as himself (Willis), he’s presented with an obvious dilemma. The movie’s talented director brought us ‘Brick’ and ‘The Brothers Bloom’. This is a great, film with well-presented time travel rules, strong characters and uniquely shot action. Indirectly, a tribute to the short story ‘The Hit’ from the British graphic comic ‘2000 AD’ some years ago.

4

The Amazing Spider-Man

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan Director: Marc Webb Worldwide Box Office Gross: $752,216,557

Spider-Man got a slightly uncalled for reboot

that took him back to high school. 27-year-old Brit Andrew Garfield is the new Peter Parker and Mary Jane is nowhere to be seen, replaced by first love Gwen Stacey, played by Emma Stone. This time Spider-Man has to face down against Ifans’ villain The Lizard, a character from Marvel’s vintage years. The director of ‘500 Days of Summer’ took over from trilogy director Sam Raimi and it was great Marb Webb went back to basics, especially featuring Parker’s invention of his ‘web-shooters’. Great character work, great use of 3D and pretty good SFX but The Lizards CGI was very disappointing.

OF THE YEAR 2012 Avengers Assemble 3

BIGScreen

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans,Mark Ruffalo Director: Joss Whedon Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1,511,757,910

Everyone thought this movie would take second place

to The Dark Knight. The hype for The Avengers paid off both for fans, for Marvel and the worldwide box office. The line-up included Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Mark Ruffalo replaced Ed Norton as The Hulk, and he completely stole the show every time the man-monster was on screen. Loki’s megalomania was thrown in for good measure. Director Joss Whedon had a daunting task on his hands, but as a former Marvel writer and a pro at ensemble films, he has made an instant classic.

2

Skyfall

Starring: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes Director: Sam Mendes Worldwide Box Office Gross: $794,300,577 (and still counting!)

MGM’s bankruptcy troubles was truly sent to its grave. Bond is finally back.... with a bang! The plot sees him question his loyalty to M when her past actions bring serious consequences to the present. After MI6 itself is attacked, Bond must seek out and eliminate the threat. Javier Bardem plays the main villain, Fiennes’ role may set him up to be the new ‘M’ and young Ben Whishaw is great as Bond’s new Quartermaster, Q. Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) directed from an intelligent script by Wade and Purvis, who’ve been the main writers on every Bond since ‘The World Is Not Enough’. Quantum of Solace was a stumble for them but from Casino Royale, they took the freshness and packing it back into the Bond formula. The producers have learnt from their mistakes and have made this Bond blockbuster hit nearly $800 million in the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

BIGScreen Edited by Ian McLaughlin

1 It was a brave move naming a Batman film ‘The Dark Knight’, since it didn’t have the word ‘Batman’ in it. There’s nothing bold about the title here. That aside, this is easily this year’s mainstream highlight, and it was, by far a better film than Marvels’ Avengers Assemble. The film dominated coverage. The plot involved the whole of Gotham descending into anarchy and mob rule, while Batman is put out of action. Tom Hardy looked imposing as Bane but his vocals was a little incomprehensible, Anne Hathaway played an angry Catwoman who steals from the rich, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the honest cop a beat cop and Marion Cotillard also featured as a Wayne Enterprises board member with a dark secret. Director Christopher Nolan made it clear this is the final chapter for his Batman, so although slow in parts, the fireworks did fly. A great end to a great film triology.

The Dark Knight Rises Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Director: Christopher Nolan Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1,080,940,218

Marvel One Shot: ITEM 47 (12)***** Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Bradford, Maximiliano Hernandez. Directed by Louis D’Esposito ‘ITEM 47’, if you haven’t already heard of it, is the latest in the Marvel One-Shots. This time it’s on THE AVENGERS Blu-ray; (available now) as if we needed another reason to buy the Avengers! That said, is the 12 minute short film any good? Well, it’s not THE AVENGERS and it can’t live up to that hype but, yes, its great. Its well written, funny and delivers quite a lot in 12 minutes. First of all, there’s no superheroes, so none of the Avengers themselves make an appearance. ITEM 47focuses on the world outside of the superheroes, making it a refreshing change from the movie it comes attached to.

BIGScreen

In short, ITEM 47 is a great focus on the little guy for a change. We may see more of this in the future, especially when AVENGERS director Joss Whedon and Marvel recently announced the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D tv series.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Gets It’s Own IMAX Prologue; Trailer To Premiere With THE HOBBIT This film does still exist! Many had been previously worried about Paramount’s complete lack of marketing and notice for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, but news recently hit that the sequel will be getting its own Dark Knight Rises-style prologue, as the first nine minutes of the movie will show in front of IMAX showings of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ from December 14. Thankfully, it will be all IMAX screenings, instead of just 70mm ones like The Dark Knight Rises was. Additionally, the first trailer (seperate from the prologue screenings) will also premiere in front of The Hobbit, ahead of the movie’s May 2013 release date. Read what TrekMovie learned below: “TrekMovie.com has exclusively learned from multiple trusted sources that the first trailer for Star Trek

Into Darkness will premiere with screenings of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ on December 14th. To be clear this Trek trailer is a completely different thing than the 9-minute preview of the beginning of the new movie which will be shown at IMAX screenings of the Hobbit film.” ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ is released May 17, 2013.

“My baby turns sweet 16! MARK DWAYNE

Founder Mark Dwayne developed

Street Cred at the tender age of 17, as a young black entrepreneur who took it upon himself to setup a platform that would give the youths of his community a chance to showcase their talent. As a top entertainment and lifestyle magazine, Street Cred was created to highlight and promote positivity in the community where

the talents of our youths are often overlooked due to the lack of opportunities available to them. Mark understood the need for a publication like Street Cred, created by the youth, for the youth. We caught up with Mark and he spoke of his journey from starting Street Cred, the challenges he faced, what keeps him going and the secret to his success!

In the beginning, did you ever imagine Street Cred would reach this stage ? Yes I did! When I was young, I always had a vision of doing something really big. I was a very confident kid at school but I didn’t really concentrate on education as such because I knew where my path lay. I used to be on a road show when I was 9, travelling around the UK mimicking acts like Stevie Wonder and performing at theme parks. I became more confident as I performed to such large crowds at a young age. That boosted my confidence, so when the idea of Street Cred came to me- It was going to be successful! Yes, I did think with that- that’s what innocence and unshakeable belief can do. What inspired you to have a magazine in particular as opposed to a radio station or a record label? I did think of having a radio and record label, however, the magazine served as an excellent platform. Later on, I did go on to have a radio as well as a record label- but the magazine was the launch pad; Print media is powerful and at that time there was no media representation for young black people. As a young artist who knew about the struggle to get talent noticed, I decided that the most powerful medium to use would be print as people read and retain the information. This was when I realised I wasn’t the only one facing the same challenges- struggling as an artist trying to get some media representation- so I put my music career on hold for a while then went on to juggle both, which was very hard, but felt good as I was helping others. Anything hard is worth doing

Mark & Kelly Rowland

“I put my music career on hold for a while then went on to juggle both, which was very hard, but felt good as I was helping others” When was the moment you realised that you had a powerful magazine in your hands? Apart from working with Destiny’s child, it had to be in 1999 where Street Cred won the Best Media Newcomer at the EMMA awards. We were up against Pride magazine and it was quite overwhelming sitting in the midst of such important people. I was stunned when our name was called out, I happened to be eating at

Mark & Keri Hilson that time which was quite funny! I managed to get to the stage somehow and wished I had prepared a speech. But certainly, that was the day it dawned on me that Street Cred had become very powerful.

I’m sure it hasn’t been an easy journey, what kept you going through the hard times? It got to a stage where it was the only thing I knew and enjoyed. At 17, there was a lot of pressure on me from work as well as the readers. But at the same time I was enjoying it as it was what I always wanted to do- the passion kept me going. I really wanted the magazine to be a successful as people needed it; I saw how it inspired young people and at that time there was a lot of crime in Birmingham. So when I put them in the magazine it inspire them to change their ways and to see that there was more to life than crime. Just seeing the change it made in people’s lives kept me going.

Can we expect any Street Cred surprises? World domination!(Laughs). We’ve gone worldwide online and we would like to dominate the world with positivity, helping people lives, sorting out the economy, aiding young people achieve their dreams and continue being a good influence on people. I’d love us to leave that legacy. What was the key to the success of Street Cred? The people- plain and simple. They wanted it, they understood the product and they needed it. Street Cred was the voice of the people in the community- the voice of the unheard. What would you like to say to all the people and organisations who have supported stretched over the years? Thanks for all the pressure because without it- Street Cred would not be here! Thanks to everyone who has bought a copy of the magazine, read the magazine, who came to the Street Cred parties and wanted it to do well.

“Thanks for all the pressure because without it- Street Cred would not be here!” Some people say you don’t get support from your own community, I never experienced that. People made it their own- the support I got was astonishing and for that I’m ever grateful. With Street Cred, people work with us, not for us; we are created by the community for the community. The success of Street Cred is due to it being For The People!

intake through foods such as the green vegetables, cabbage, broccoli and beans and fruits such as kiwi, oranges and berries. Scientists have found that zinc may stop cold viruses from multiplying, which is brilliant if you just want to get on with enjoying yourself. Foods containing zinc include dark chocolate, pumpkin seeds, beef, wheat germ and oysters.

4

Exercise

Keep moving! Regular exercise will make you feel much more energetic. Even moderate exercise can strengthen your immune system, reducing the risk of colds and flu. Also, we tend to eat more during the winter months. What better way to stave off the pounds?

5

Moisturise

You must moisturise. Winter weather unbalances your skin, leaving it irritated and susceptible to harsh environmental factors regardless of your skin type. I recommend vitamin E oil to my clients of all ages, male or female. Vitamin E oil is replenishing and nourishing oil that has been used on skin for centuries to restore pallor and elasticity, as well as to speed up wound healing. Use 6-10 drops day and/or night depending on your skin’s needs and type and watch your skin flourish!

6

Health and Fitness

Exfoliate Winter weather causes an increase of dead skin cells, which may clog pores – and, in turn, worsen acne. Use a very light facial exfoliator at least once a week. Make sure it is formulated for the face and not the body. Apply with fingertips only. Dampen fingers for a bit of glide, and very gently sweep over skin in a circular motion for about 45 seconds. Don’t press too firmly – this will only irritate those already puffy sebaceous glands! Doing this should leave your skin polished and refreshed. Please remember to put a nourishing moisturiser on following your exfoliation for maximum glow!

7

Keep Warm Ahhh . . . who doesn’t like to be toasty warm? The best way to keep your body warm is by layering your clothes. You don’t have to forsake looking good in winter because of bulky jumpers and thick socks; pop on a cotton vest, then a t shirt, then your sweater over the top – this layering action keeps you insulated. Woollen hats, gloves and socks are the best insulators for the head, hands and feet. These areas leak vital heat from the body much more rapidly than anywhere else, so keep them in the woollies as much as you can when outside. Although she studied Medicine at Glasgow University, Emeli had her heart set on a music career, but was well aware of the pitfalls. Top Gear live Maserati Quattroporte Review

V8 TWIN TURBO ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE •

The engine produces 390kW (530 hp) of power at 6800rpm and accompanies this with 650Nm of torque from 2000rpm to 4000rpm.This maximum normal torque figure can be overboosted to 710 Nm from 2250rpm to 3500rpm.

Another ground-breaking figure is the Quattroporte’s top speed, comfortably breaking through the 300km/h barrier to reach 307km/h (191 mph). Again, this makes it the fastest four-door Maserati in history and second amongst all Maserati production cars behind the mighty V12-powered MC12.

THE NEW MASERATI QUATTROPORTE

Review

The flagship of the Maserati product range, the

Quattroporte, is larger, lighter, more luxurious and more practical than the globally acclaimed car it replaces. With a 307km/h (191 mph) top speed, it’s also as fast as most two-door supercars. The 3.8-litre V8 engine provides Maserati’s new performance benchmark, reaching 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds and achieving a 307km/h (191 mph) top speed. It is 20km/h faster than the Quattroporte Sport GT S and delivers up to 200Nm more torque as well. The V6 twin turbo doesn’t lack in performance, either, reaching 285km/h (177 mph).

The all-new architecture retains the Quattroporte’s traditionally exquisite handling thanks to its 50:50 weight distribution, a double-wishbone front suspension and a state-of-the-art five-link rear suspension. It can now deliver the added security and all-weather assurance of all-wheel drive as well. Maserati has been considered a master of sports saloon design from the day the original 1963 Quattroporte became the first automobile to blend speed and luxury with four doors.A powerful engine and a large cabin are at the core of the Quattroporte’s design, dominated by a long, impressive nose with its short overhang.

or four days from the 25th October, Clarkson, May and Hammond brought their hit motoring show Top Gear to Birmingham’s NEC.The event was split into two parts, the “tyre-kicking” motor show most people would be expecting, showcasing some of the biggest brands, and most expensive and luxurious cars money can buy in the main hall, alongside an arena show of epic proportions filled with the kind of mayhem we’ve all come to expect from the TV show. There were a large number of European supercars on show, ranging from the Lamborghini Aventador to the Bugatti Veyron and the Ferrari Enzo, however the most crowded section of the hall had to be the 6 car display put out by the British luxury sports car makers, Aston Martin. Alongside the standard road cars, as far as “standard” can be used for an Aston Martin, and 2 of their professional racing cars, Aston Martin also displayed the jewel of their range - the 220mph One77 (top right). One of only 77 units in the world, this 7.3L V12 supercar was constantly surrounded by members of the public, and it is easy to see why.

Alongside the displays, there were manufacturers of everything you can think of when talking about cars. Tracking systems, stain removers, accessories and car care products were amongst the many items available from the stalls. For a small fee you could try the simulators, driving around the Top Gear test track with The Stig, as well as a lap from the cockpit of a Formula 1 racing car driven by Michael Schumacher.

INTERVIEW TIPS HOW TO SECURE THAT DREAM JOB

We are in the middle of one of the worst recessions in living memory; jobs are thin on the ground and the competition for them becoming increasingly challenging. With thousands of university applicants graduating each year with high expectations, Street Cred has talked to Hays public sector recruitment consultant Michael Watson who gives you some tips on how to bolster your chances and avoid the pre-interview nerves.

10 TOP TIPS FOR AN INTERVIEW: 1) Research , Research, Research.

7) Avoid Negativity

Find out about the company and your interviewer. Ensure you understand the job role (being able to give examples that demonstrate your ability to do the role) - The more info you have and can demonstrate in interview, the more enthusiastic and credible you will appear.

Saying negative things about a previous employer show a lack of professionalism. Make sure any comments about a difficult situation are objective and not based on your emotional feelings. You should aim to be positive.

2) Plan Your Route Don’t leave it to chance, use Google Earth to plan you destination and estimate your journey time. Always consider the time of day and make allowances for traffic/ rush hour.

3) Be On Time

8) Answer Questions. . Even Awkward Ones Be prepared to discuss the reason why you want the job- this should not be based on money - always give other reasons outside of the financial benefits.

9) Watch Your Body Language

Don’t start things off on a bad footing way by being late, this will only go against you. Aim to be at your interview destination 15 minutes before your interview start time.

Actions speak louder than words - Think about your body language - keep a good posture, maintain a good level of eye contact. Avoid crossing your legs and arms as it signals defensiveness.

4) Start As You Mean To Go On

10) Mobiles OFF

Introduce yourself courteously –first impressions last so make yours a good one. Express yourself clearly; show tact, manners and courtesy at every opportunity. This will build rapport and ensure the interviewer is engaged. Also thank the interviewer at the end for the opportunity.

If you have to leave it on make sure it is for a good reason and inform the interviewer before the interview begins. No call is so important that you potentially lose a job for it.

5) Ask Questions Think about at least two or three questions before hand (one about the job, one about the company). This helps to convey your interest in the role.

Michael Watson Specialist in Office Support recruitment in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. (Public sector, Commerce and Industry and professional Services)

6) Long Term Plan Show your willingness to start at the bottom and work your way up. This demonstrates you have the determination to succeed.

The Skills Show, UK’s largest skills

and career event, drew thousands of young people over a three day period at the NEC. The exhibition drew over 200 companies, educator and training providers including the RAF, Land Rover, Solihull College and BMW to name a few. Graced by prominent personalities such as the Princess Royal, president of the City & Guild of London Institute and Dragons Den’s Theo Paphitis, official patron, the event pulled out all the stops in making sure that everyone knew about it. It was an event unlike any other. Visitors got the chance to literarily get their hands dirty with over 45 opportunities to “Have a go” at a new skill like floristry, bricklaying, games design, dentistry etc. The show’s aim was to inspire young people with various exciting

opportunities in further education, skills and apprenticeships. It was also a platform for some of the best of the nation’s talent to showcase their work. Speaking to multimillionaire Paphitis, he was passionate about the issue of young people getting the right skill-set praising on-the-job training. He said: “If someone has a skill, they have a tool for life that can transform their fortune and form the basis for their own enterprise”. David Cragg, Deputy Chairman of The Skills Show, conveyed that the Skills Show was also aimed at tackling the deficit in the UK of undervaluing practical and vocational applied skills:“This is first of all opening their eyes to what opportunities there are. In the current environment, it is also giving young people some hope and optimism about the range of opportunities” He concluded by encouraging business and educational institutions to adopt this experience based approach to learning such as organising have-a-go days and getting their experts to talk to young people.

ason Craig, a Coventry University journalism graduate, has won a prestigious industry award. The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has named Jason as the winner of the Renault MSA Young Motor Sport Journalist of the Year 2012. Established in 2002 in association with Renault UK, the prize is designed to recognise the most promising journalists aged 25 or under working within British motor sport. Jason, aged 25 from Co. Antrim, studied Journalism and Media at the Coventry School of Art and Design from 2006 to 2009. He returned home to join the Coleraine Chronicle after graduating with first class honours.

confidence boost with 2013 just around the corner. I look forward to collecting my award at the RAC’s Pall Mall in London at the Night of Champions in January – it promises to be a very memorable occasion.

A keen motor sport enthusiast, Jason’s nomination for the MSA award was supported by Damian Mullan, Jason’s sports editor at the Chronicle, who credited him with significantly increasing the paper’s coverage of rallying over the last two years. Former British Historic Rally Champion Dessie Nutt also praised Jason for helping to raise the profile of motor sport in the region.

Andrew Noakes, Senior Lecturer in Automotive Journalism at Coventry School of Art and Design, was delighted to hear of Jason’s success in the MSA competition. He said: “On behalf of all of my colleagues within the Department of Media I would like to congratulate Jason on winning the Motor Sports Association’s award. He has done fantastically well to win what is a very highly esteemed prize within industry circles.

Beating off stiff competition from across the UK, Jason impressed the MSA judges with his accomplished news writing, the breadth, depth and originality of his stories, and the sheer amount of copy bearing his by-line. He will be presented with his award at a special ceremony being held in London in January 2013.Jeremy Townsend, Communications Director of Renault UK, said: “The standard of entries was as high as ever with a very impressive breadth of work. Of all though, Jason’s work stood out with unanimous agreement from the judges. I wish Jason every success with his future career.” Jason Craig said:“To win this prestigious accolade is extremely humbling and the culmination of two years hard work with the Chronicle. It is always nice to be recognised by your peers, and no doubt the award will serve as a huge

“It’s always pleasing to see ‘one of our own’ succeed but knowing Jason as an ambitious, enthusiastic and committed student I was sure that he would go on to do well after leaving us. I share Jason’s passion for all things motor sport so I’m really pleased to see that he took ‘pole position’ in the MSA Competition. Jason will collect a trophy and a cheque for £1000 at the Motor Sport Association’s Night of Champions at the Royal Automobile Club, London, on 19 January 2013.

LOVE ACROSS BORDERS IMMIGRATION with ADVICE

elcome to this inaugural Immigration Advice Page. We encourage questions but strongly urge you to seek individual advice on your particular circumstances. Our focus for this month is the effect of the law when the love of your life is from a non-EEA country. How do you approach the immigration issue of your non-EEA partner coming to the UK to live with you here? Although there are some limited provisions for fiancé/fiancées, the primary immigration rule is that the partner seeking to come to the UK must be a spouse, or unmarried partner or same sex civil partner. The partner living in the UK must be a British national, EEA National resident in Britain, or Non-EEA National with Indefinite Leave to Remain. In order for your partner to join you in Britain five main criteria must be satisfied: you have both met, are married, have a genuine relationship, adequate accommodation and sufficient funds in the UK. Unless yours was a cultural wedding allowing for persons to marry without meeting each other, most persons will easily meet the first and second criteria. Also, most persons in the UK rarely have difficulty with accommodation as, even if it is inadequate, you can change to a new tenancy. It is the funds and the relationship requirement that tends to cause problems for

THE GIRLS ARE BACK IN TOWN!!! S

TEN: REVIEW

ince wowing us with their debuted “Sound Of The Underground” in 2002, Girls Aloud have since become one of UK’s top girlbands with 20 top ten singles and four #1s. In total, the girls have sold over eight million records with each of their five albums going platinum or above. After announcing in July 2009 that they were taking a year-long hiatus to pursue solo projects, the girls have done just about everything in the show-biz industry between them, from Cheryl’s Xfactor stint to Sarah’s acting, Kimberley’s strictly come dancing, Nicola’s Make-up collection and Nadine’s album. It seems Girls Aloud have now realized that they are indeed better together, as they are now back with their greatest hits album Ten-this is a collection of the award

winning group’s singles over the last ten years as well as four new songs, which the girls have worked on over the past year. I was particularly impressed that they made an effort to offer their fans four new tracks as well as their previous songs. In terms of their new sound with “Something new”, “Every now and then”, “Beautiful cause you love me” and “On the metro”. I was a bit disappointed that they sounded the same, I would have been nice to see them be a little more adventurous and maybe do something besides pop and ballads. Overall, I believe the band has matured and it is good to see them back together again. Cheryl, Kimberley, Nadine, Nicola and Sarah will be back on tour in February next year with ‘Ten – The Hits Tour 2013’.

ALICIA KEYS TO SET THE NIA ALIGHT Following her sizzling performance on the X Factor, multiple Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, and producer Alicia Keys will hit Birmingham for ‘Girl on Fire – The Tour’. “This album has been a labour of love and full of new beginnings, new perspectives and fresh starts,” said Keys. “I’m so excited to be touring again and it’s great to be back in the UK. I’m looking forward to performing and feeling the energy of the crowd—there’s nothing like it.” Since 2001, Keys has built an unparalleled repertoire of hits and accomplishments with more than 30 million albums and 30 million singles sold worldwide, and over one hundred award wins, which also includes eleven Billboard Music Awards and three MTV Europe Awards. Her most recently released, multi-platinum fourth studio album, Element of Freedom, sold one million copies in the UK alone and was one of Britain’s top 10 best selling albums of 2010. The album was written and produced by Alicia alongside collaborators Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Bruno Mars), Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas), Frank Ocean, Emile Sande, and Jamie XX among others.

RoXxan live – ILUVLIVE, Nine Bar, Birmingham 12th December 2012 Bringing her debut mixtape to life with the

help of the ILuvLive house band, RoxXxan was back in her hometown of Birmingham last night for the third date of her first national tour, ‘Prepare 4 When I Land’ Happy to be home, RoxXxan bigged up Brum and ILuvLive for their support over the past few years; and, judging by the hyped-up crowd, Birmingham was very happy to have the female Mc back, albeit for one night. RoxXxan began proceedings by performing the widely supported ‘Too F****** Facety’, followed by the straight-talking and, I must say, amusing ‘Kween Richard’. While she wasn’t able to perform everything from her 12-track-deep mixtape, and despite having a set list of only four songs (prompting the audience to “awwwww” when announced), she did give us a couple of extras thanks to a series of audience-led chants along the lines of “we want Alarm!” and “Dagga!” “No ‘Dagga’! – my mom’s here..,” she insisted. But, by popular demand, an impromptu snippet ensued, with the band following RoxXxan’s lead with “a little bashment beat”, in true iLuvLive stylee.

Backpack Gang in town and with a room full of supporters, no call and response attempt was left unanswered. But that’s really no surprise; RoxXxan clearly has a great way of building rapport with her listening public, in both onstage conversation and performance. RoxXxan’s prowess as a storyteller shone especially during ‘Real Talk’, a track where she raps about some of life’s trials and tribulations. Even with her eyes closed, the crowd remained engaged regardless, so much so that it felt like the audience was on the iLuvLive stage with her. This may have a little something to do with the crowd-tovenue-capacity ratio, but still….

SO BRANDNEW presents....ILUVLIVE Wednesday 12th Dec

In the absence of music producer Mikey J, who features on the track, RoxXxan used his part of the song as an opportunity to thank the audience, promising not to get all bourgie on us when she hits the big time. Not prepared to end her show with a “p****hole song” (her words, not mine LOL), RoxXxan then flipped the sedate mood on its head and performed the final track on her setlist, ‘Power’. Leona Lewis

McFly

Saturday 15th December 2012

back stronger than ever with a fantastic line-up amongst which were McFly, Leona Lewis, Labrinth, Stooshe , Little mix and JLS. The Show was opened by McFly with a mind-blowing performance that set a standard for all the artists that followed. The atmosphere in the auditorium was an exciting one with many spectators obviously enjoying themselves, getting out of their seats to dance. The organisers did a great job with regards to audience participation by having real-time tweets from the spectators displayed on a big screen and having a hamster cam which placed whisker on the faces of some unsuspecting spectators.

Labrinth pulled down the roof with his smash hit “Earthquake” and his number one single “Beneath your beautiful” while girlbands Stooshe and Little mix reminded us why girlbands are a necessity. Other performances from hunky boyband Lawson, Amelia Lily, Scouting for Girls and JLS who closed the show with a few of their top hits “Everybody in love”, “hottest girl in the world” and their latest “Hold me down ”capped the show as a show that will be remembered for time to come. Overall, the show was flawlessly executed and I have to agree with Labrinth when he mentioned that it was his best show of the year, it was mine too!

CHRIS TUCKER Live UK Tour Birmingham Symphony Hall 90 minute stand-up he told a story about his trip to Africa to trace his ancestors. He was not amused when an even more distant relative turned up, hand outstretched.

Chris Tucker made the leap to prominence in the 1995

film ‘Friday’ alongside Ice Cube, and then appeared in Luc Besson’s ‘The Fifth Element’ before the ‘Rush Hour’ films. In 2006, he negotiated a $25 million deal to appear in Rush Hour 3, which at the time made him the highest paid actor in Hollywood. But recent media reports say he owes $12 million in taxes. However he has had no movie roles since Rush Hour, and kept a low profile, only returning to stand-up last year. His special three-date UK tour is a massive sell-out and with a scene-stealing cameo in the recently released Oscar tipped ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ should place him back on the map. Did he ever leave? A packed Birmingham Symphony Hall saw him reflect on his youth during his energetic on stage style, ignoring the small amount star-struck individuals armed with their camera phones, scattered in Birmingham’s beautiful massive complex, trying to be Paparazzi’s for the evening. Most annoying I must say and distracting. Even with the army of usher’s approaching them every couple of minutes they try and take a photo of the Hollywood star. But the smart, white-suited 41 year-old quickly ranted how he was once so rich he bought two houses next to each other: “I was my own neighbour!”. He kept returning to the subject, joking how following his Hollywood success, relatives emerged from everywhere asking for handouts with Tucker wanting a mug shot in return! Later, during the

Parenthood and religion was touched upon, but Tucker’s other main speciality was impressions. Bill Clinton was well executed but Barack Obama was not quite on point, and the extended routine about his friendship with Michael Jackson, frequently breaking into crowd pleasing songs and hip-swivelling dance moves was classic Tucker. In respect of Jackson, never did he make any jokes about the media created dark side of the late king of pop, but he could not resist taking the mick at Michael’s ‘pet’ giraffes and his Neverland mansion. An amusing evening all round, but one thing he did announce to the audience there will be NO new ‘Friday’, the movie that kicked started his Hollywood career over 20 years ago. But I can confirm ‘Rush Hour’ is currently in development. Now, that movie should throw him back into the black...

XFactor Special

Nicole Scherzinger JUDGE

As we all know, this year’s X Factor had its ups and downs ,however, we here at Street Cred thought that despite all the drama that went on, these people deserve an acknowledgement and praise for a job well done at being a positive influence on the public. Find out why below:

We admire Nicole Scherzinger because she did

an amazing job this year not only because she is the first ever judge to secure all her contestants a place in the final, but also because its obvious that she is a genuinely lovely person,a people’s person. She helped her contestants harness their talent without demanding they loose their individuality. She also worked with them,by being hands on, practicing and eventually performing with them. Thumbs up Nicole, you have set a standard for all female judges, we hope to see you next season!

Jahmene Douglas RUNNER UP

Jahmene Douglas was different, and by different, we mean good

different. He had something very special about him that raised goose-bumps on your skin when he starts to sing. He is spiritual and gifted and we believe that he has been placed in this xfactor this year to cause a change in people’s life somehow. Despite the fact that he did not win the X Factor, we believe Jahmene’s future is very bright and we wish him all the best in his career. He has now been signed to Sony Records.
