A partnership that began in 2011, benefiting People's City Mission in Lincoln, created such impact that in 2020 a partnership was created with Stephen Center to provide support to the Omaha community as well. WoodmenLife Awards Students $347,500 in Scholarships
The WoodmenLife Focus Forward Scholarship® was given to 578 students across the country.
WoodmenLife announced the recipients of its annual Focus Forward Scholarship, with a total of $347,500 awarded to 578 recent high school graduates from across the country. To qualify, students had to submit applications showcasing their academic achievements and community involvement and an essay on patriotism.
The top prize of a $10,000 scholarship was awarded to three individuals this year. They are Josie York, a senior at North Oldham High School in Goshen, KY, who intends to major in political science in the fall; Abby Morgan, a Bristow, OK, student who plans to pursue a career in physical therapy or athletic training with the help of her scholarship; and Rykir Evans of Bowie, TX, who is currently working on a degree in computer science at Midwestern State University.
Additionally, the program awarded 15 $2,500 scholarships and 560 $500 scholarships to assist deserving students nationwide in reaching their goals in higher education.
“We are honored to be a part of helping these students follow their dreams and continue their education,” said Denise McCauley, WoodmenLife President & CEO. “These young students showcase WoodmenLife’s values each day, and we have high hopes for what they will accomplish in the future.”
Since starting the scholarship program in 2017, WoodmenLife has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships to 5,202 students who are furthering their education at trade schools, colleges and universities across the country.

Omaha's Blackstone District Welcomes New Barbecue Joint- Lazy Buffalo BBQ
Omaha welcomes the Blackstone District's first barbeque joint. Lazy Buffalo BBQ opened this April near 39th and Farnam Sts. The restaurant is connected to Scriptown Brewing Company.
“We want to provide our own twist on traditional live-fire BBQ with a mix of other menu items that remind us of old family recipes,” CoOwner Brady Hess said in a statement.
The menu for Lazy Buffalo BBQ, will feature smoked meats and some “unique twists.”
The barbeque joint will be replacing a Blackstone favorite: Kathmandu Momo Station.

Centris Announces 90th Anniversary Community Concert
Centris Federal Credit Union has announced that, in honor of their 90th year of business, they will host the Centris Music Fest at Stinson Park, located in Aksarben Village on Saturday, July 27.
Centris was the 28th federally chartered credit union founded in Omaha in 1934 by employees of the Omaha Telephone Company. For 90 years they have served the banking needs of those who live or work in many Nebraska and western Iowa communities.
“We are very excited to host a free, daylong concert event for our employees and the community in honor of our 90th anniversary,” said Dawn Gonzales, Vice President Community Relations for the credit union. Centris Music Fest will feature multiple local bands, food trucks, face painting, the Centris Chill Zone, balloon art, yard games and other activities for the daylong celebration. The concert event begins at 2 p.m. and will end with a special Centris fireworks show at 10 p.m.

Tell us a little about your business. - 1-800-BoardUp provides customer/victim services after a fire or other emergency once the emergency itself has been managed by first responders. We help citizens start on their road of recovery. The immediate help we provide can be anything from securing their home/property to providing victims with toothbrushes, diapers, other personal needs, assisting with finding a place to stay or even getting needed medical attention for their pets.
Additionally, our association with Belfor Property Restoration allows us to assist victims all the way to completion of their journey to their new normal after their emergency.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I was a first responder for 39+ years. I spent time as a police officer and career firefighter/paramedic. My last 14 years at the fire department I was a captain in charge of a shift.
At my fire department retirement party I was asked the same question. The answer today is the same as that day. At the end of every 24 hour fire department shift, all of the men and women I supervised during that previous shift went home. Maybe tired or sore but they still went home. No one I supervised was ever seriously injured or died under my watch.
Tell us a little about your family. - My wife, Cheryl, and I met when we both were police officers in Norfolk. 40+ years later we are still together. We have three children, all sons. All are first responders. We have a firefighter/paramedic on Omaha Fire, a conservation officer/game warden in South Dakota working out of Rapid City and a firefighter/paramedic on Grand Island Fire. All three are married and between them we have six grandchildren.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Anything with my grandchildren.
Who inspires you? - My wife. She is smart, intuitive and the most giving/caring person I know. I would not have been able to do a tenth of the things I have done in my life without her love, guidance and unwavering support.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Caring.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - That answer has changed over the years. Today I would be full-time day care provider to my grandchildren! Selfishly, spending more time with the grandchildren would be great. I would also want to help out my kids and their spouses because of how expensive daycare is for them.
What is your favorite TV show? - The original NCIS.
What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - Summer Kitchen Café in La Vista. While not a restaurant but Graley’s Creamery and Confections in Papillion has the best homemade ice cream ever!
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - While not famous, except to me and my family, I would love to have dinner one more time with my parents.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - It’s a mixed bag -- I love to read, organize/simplify things in the home – it’s cathartic for me, anything out of doors, yoga and pilates.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote is by Dr. Maya Angelou, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I try and live by this quote.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? - I would like to be able to teleport. I love to travel and visit friends and family. Sometimes, the travelling “to and from” is tedious and can be tiring. Teleporting, would lessen the stress and give you more time for the relevant activities, visiting with friends and family and experiencing the adventures of the location.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Either a teacher or health care professional. Both professions require selflessness, a view greater than your own, compassion, continual learning and a connection with the individual. For both, you are ultimately giving of yourself and providing for the greater good.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - NorthStar Foundation. Their mission is to change young men’s lives through programming that supports, challenges, inspires and instills a life rooted in education, self-discipline and service to the community. Their mission, along with the Executive Director, Scott Hazelrigg and the entire team’s dedication to and passion for the mission are creating successful outcomes for many young men and their families thereby bettering communities.

Tell us a little about your business. - AR Solutions was founded to provide the most professional, ethical and innovative accounts receivables collection solutions for our clients.
How did you get started in the business? - Like most professionals in the debt collection space, I “fell” into the opportunity. While in college I worked as an auto mechanic and autobody technician, so when I graduated I had little to no professional network in the legal field. I took a job preparing legal documents for a local collection agency. The owner “took me under his wing” and taught me the business.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Keeping up with the ever changing governmental regulations and making changes on the fly.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Being able to be in business from a startup to almost 20 years later and realizing a minimum of 15% growth year after year.
Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married to my wife, Jori, for 26 years, we have three girls. KiLee is finishing up her second year at UNL, Kassie is a junior at Wavely High School, and Khloe is an eighth grader at Waverly middle school. We also have two labs, Ranger is a yellow lab and Ruger is a chocolate lab.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Having children.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love traveling, I try to get to the Caribbean as often as I can.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I am working on getting my private pilot's license.
Who inspires you? - People who are honest, have integrity, are true leaders and genuinely care about people.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - I have several but the one that sticks out the most is, “The only risk you regret taking is the one you never took.”
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Integrity.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? - "You've Got to Stand for Something" by Aaron Tippin.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Being in multiple places at the same time.
Which talent would you most like to have? - Playing a musical instrument. I have tried learning to play the guitar several times but it never seems to stick. Or speaking multiple languages.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I read a lot so that is a tough one but the last two books I listened to that that were quite profound were Outlive by Petter Attia and The Alchemest by Paula Coelho. Neither book has to do with leadership which is what I normally read, but they both were quite impactful.

Nick Wimmer UNION BANK & TRUST Meet Nick Wimmer, Vice President –Commercial Lending at Union Bank & Trust.Tell us a little about your business. - As a commercial lender, I assist business owners and CFOs/Controllers of companies of all sizes with lending and depository services. One thing that attracted me to UBT is that we are a big enough bank to handle almost any deal regardless of size or complexity, but small enough to be nimble and get things done.
How did you get started in the business? - As much as I love my job, I often tell people that no one grows up wanting to be a banker. I graduated from the University of Nebraska with two things - an accounting degree and a high level of certainty that I never wanted to work as an accountant. Banking (specifically commercial lending) was appealing to me because I thought it would give me the ability develop relationships and work with people while still utilizing my numbers background.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I think the COVID-19 Pandemic was a challenging time for every banker. Between processing PPP loans, deal flow being heightened from borrowers capitalizing on historically low interest rates and trying to operate in a client-facing role from a home, there were all sorts of challenges. But I’m also quick to recognize that a lot of people, especially frontline healthcare workers and essential employees, were dealing with a lot more at that time.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Every time I am able to help an employee become an employer via startup or business acquisition loan, that is when I have felt the greatest sense of professional achievement. As cheesy or cliché as it sounds, it is extremely rewarding to play a small part in making an aspiring entrepreneur’s dreams become their new reality.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Fishing, golfing or hunting. And if all of those activities are off the table, then working in my yard. For being a generally laid-back guy, I have a pretty hard time sitting still for too long.
Who inspires you? - I’m constantly inspired and motivated by my father and my grandfather, both of whom have passed away. My father treated people better than anyone I’d ever met and my grandfather was the hardest worker I’d ever known.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Why worry? If you’ve done the very best you can, then worrying won’t make it any better.”
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Genuine.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - When I was younger, I wanted to be a sports agent. I don’t really know why, but I suspect it had something to do with me knowing even then that being a professional athlete was off the table, so I figured that would’ve been the next best thing.
Which talent would you most like to have? - I think a photographic memory would be extremely helpful. Otherwise, I would love to be a better golfer (without practicing or spending money on lessons, of course).

Tell us a little about your business. - Strictly Business is a business magazine that highlights news, businesses, and the community of Omaha and the surrounding areas.
How did you get started in the business? - I initially started out my career as a graphic design intern for a FinTech. When I graduated school in December 2024 I found Strictly Business and was so excited to elevate my skills in a different industry.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced professionally would have to be finishing school. As an out of state, double major, transfer student, I faced a lot of adversity in finding my path. Luckily it all led me to a place where I can continue to grow and learn every day.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Holding the position of Art Director is very important to me. I get to create something every day, learn new things, communicate with clients and more. This sense of responsibility and accountability is crucial to my motivation.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The pandemic really changed my life, as well as the lives of so many others. It was a turning point for me because it marked the change from childhood to adulthood. I had to move home during quarantine and after I left for school the next year, I never lived at home again.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to take care of house plants, so on my days off I can be found on my front porch repotting and enjoying the company of my pets.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I used to live in Alaska.
Who inspires you? - My mother. She is my hero and the strongest person I know.

Tell us a little about your business. - The Greater Omaha Chamber is the oldest business membership organization in the State of Nebraska that drives regional economic development, champions a strong business climate and serves it’s nearly 3,000 members through various programming and events that assists them advancing their mission.
How did you get started in the business? - I served a volunteer with Greater Omaha Chamber and the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce for the past six years, assisting primarily with public policy and education-related matters.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Finding “work-life” balance in technology-connected world. While I still have not found balance completely, I have become more mindful of others boundaries even if I choose to spend my time writing emails or memos.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?Being elected by my fellow state legislators as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in 2013.
Tell us a little about your family. - I’ve been happily married to my wife Catherine for nearly 14 years and we have a 10 year old daughter Angelina and an eight year old son John.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - My election to the Nebraska Legislature in 2008 at the age of 29.

With the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center close to completion, MICAH House is happy to introduce the Childcare Center Director, Jess McGee. Jess brings with her over six years of childcare classroom and director experience.
“I grew up within a large family with a single mother, so childcare was something I was involved in from a very young age. With three younger siblings and two that were severely premature and medically fragile, my mom needed a lot of support, and I loved helping with my siblings,” says Jess.

Nebraska Community Foundation Announces Two New Hires
Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) recently welcomed Jean Hinton of Lincoln and Maggie Smith of Albion to its talented team of professionals committed to building stronger communities and a Greater Nebraska.
As the Office and Gift Processing Assistant, Hinton is responsible for managing efficient and accurate gift processing records and procedures, ensuring effective use of information systems and technology specific to donor and volunteer information, providing a wide range of confidential administrative support services for NCF staff and volunteers, as well as assisting in maintaining an efficient office.
Prior to joining NCF, Hinton worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in a variety of administrative and supportive roles for a cumulative 16 years. Her experience handling confidential data and helping departments stay organized will be an asset to the NCF team. Hinton obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Smith joins NCF as the Affiliated Fund Development Coordinator for Northeast Nebraska, where she will work with volunteer leaders to build community awareness, conduct fundraising efforts and increase community impact through grantmaking and citizen engagement.
Smith most recently served as the director of economic development and housing for Albion Economic Development Corporation in Albion, Nebraska. Her work there, combined with her experience as a director of faith formation for Families in Faith Catholic Parishes and as an assistant for the University of Nebraska Extension in Seward County, prepared her for the relationship-building and guidance role she will occupy for NCF affiliated funds in northeast Nebraska. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education-Leadership and a Master of Science in Leadership Education-Human Resource Development from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Pending final approval by the President and Board of Regents, Dr. Armstrong will begin her appointment on July 1st.
A titan in her field, Dr. Armstrong has been leading the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice since 2016, guiding it to unparalleled excellence. Throughout her leadership, the unit has maintained a national top 20 undergraduate and doctoral program ranking and a top 10 master’s program ranking! She is also codirector of the Nebraska Collaborative for Violence Intervention and Prevention, and in 2023 began serving as the UNO Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA.
With a passion for nurturing talent, Dr. Armstrong has been a guiding light for junior faculty and students alike, fostering a culture of growth and empowerment. COPE added a new Program Director, Panashe, to the team. Panashe will be leading the case management and housing stability program.

Omaha National Insurance Company announced today that Jim Hempel has joined the company as General Counsel and David Bird has joined as Vice President, Accounting. Additionally, Derrald Farnsworth-Livingston has been promoted to Vice President, IT Infrastructure.
Hempel joins Omaha National from Blue cross Blue shield of Nebraska, where he served as associate general counsel for more than 13 years. His range of experience includes providing executive legal support and direction while managing vendor services, corporate governance, legal and risk management programs in the insurance industry He will advise and support the Omaha National executive leadership team while managing legal initiatives for operational teams throughout the enterprise. He received his juris doctorate from the university of Nebraska and is licensed through the Nebraska State Bar.
Bird has more than 20 years of experience in the accounting and finance field, most recently holding leadership positions at publicly traded companies in the Omaha area. He started his career in public accounting at Deloitte, where he spent more than eight years in their audit and assurance group work ng on mid-market and large SECreporting clients. At Omaha National, he will assist the chief financial officer in overseeing the accounting, payroll, and financial reporting functions. He is certified as a management accountant through the Institute of Management Accountants and is a licensed CPA in the state of Nebraska. He holds a BSBA and master’s degree in accounting from the university of Nebraska.
Farnsworth-Livingston joined Omaha National in 2019 as director of information technology, where his role includes service desk operations, server and network implementation and support, and information security. Before joining Omaha National, FarnsworthLivingston had 20 years of broad-based experience in crafting and implementing successful IT strategies, architecting large-scale resilient systems, and managing technical teams that deliver exceptional customer service. Kuhn 'Grateful' to Lead Pro Volleyball Federation’s Inaugural Season
The inaugural year in the Pro Volleyball Federation wrapped-up with Laura “Bird” Kuhn as the interim coach for the Omaha Supernovas.
“My whole reason for doing this was to be a part of the first season for our sport and for these athletes,” Kuhn said.
The Omaha Supernovas were one of seven franchises starting from scratch in the country’s lone conventional pro volleyball league — also starting from scratch — and a big dose of unexpected happened after Omaha’s first two matches.
Kuhn was the first assistant hired by coach Shelton Collier, whom she played for at Georgia Tech in the early 2000s. But after starting the season one to one, Collier moved out of the head coaching role and into an advisory position. Kuhn was then tabbed interim coach to finish the season.

Our dedicated staff review police reports and proactively reach out to families in need of assistance. Upon contact, our team engages with the young person and their family to devise a comprehensive intervention plan, which includes tailored individual and group therapy sessions.
Our overarching goal is to shift perceptions surrounding runaway youth, moving beyond simplistic labels and instead understanding the underlying reasons for their actions. Girls on the Run Recruiting Coaches and Sites for Fall
Be part of the friendship and 5K fun of Girls on the Run (GOTR) next fall – COACH! The fall GOTR season will serve teams across the OmahaLincoln metro region and we need two to three coaches for every team.
You don’t have to be a runner to be a great GOTR coach. If you are a positive person who wants to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, you’ll be a great coach!
GOTR combines lessons to foster social skills and characterdevelopment with fun running games to train for a 5K run at the end of each eight-week season. Led by two to three trained coaches, teams of 10 to 20 third- through fifth-/sixth-grade girls complete a nationally standardized confidence-building curriculum.
Since its inception with 11 girls and two coaches in September 2003, Girls on the Run of Nebraska has expanded to serve more than 25,000 girls and 3,000 coaches at 100+ sites across the state.

Camp Quality Heartland is looking for volunteers for their week-long overnight summer camp being held July 7-12 in Fremont. Opportunities are available to be a Camper Companion, Medical Team Member or Support Staff.
This camp is for kids impacted by pediatric cancer and their siblings. Camp Quality provides FREE year-round support activities for children with cancer and their families. “Playing outside is so beneficial for young children,” said Executive Director Rafel O. Hart. “It’s time to explore new things, move around and have fun. Outdoor play can lead to better physical and mental health, improved sleep and cognitive, social and emotional gains.”

AIM Institute’s Code School Helps Participants Navigate Basics of Technology
La Fuente Business Center Receives $90K in Grants
AIM Code School, a State Department of Education accredited school, launched two technical training cohorts shortly after the new year. First, its Foundations of Technology cohort helped participants navigate through the basics of technology including: networking, IT infrastructure, at- home troubleshooting and WordPress site creation. The instructor facilitated the class in a Spanish/ English bilingual format, making this AIM’s first bilingual course offering, which received positive feedback from students.
AIM’s popular Foundations of Web Development launched mid-January. While still in progress, this class is currently on pace to certify eight participants, all with refugee status. Students in this class will graduate equipped with the ability to produce front-end code necessary for website creation. Additionally, this skill set allows students to begin creating work samples that can be used to network with and apply to local tech companies. This class is unique in that all students are practicing Muslims; AIM’s community partner, International Council for Refugees and Immigrants, connected these participants with AIM Institute. This class is comprised of students from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso and Tajikistan.

Christian Record Services Celebrates the Growth of PhoneFaith
Christian Record Services, Inc. is thrilled to share news about the growth of PhoneFaith as part of its outreach ministry to the blind community.
When Christian Record Services (CRS) acquired PhoneFaith from another nonprofit in 2020, it had approximately 20-30 participants a month. Since then, the program has grown, and in January 2024, there were 217 total participants, peaking during the revivals and other special programs with well-known presenters.
In addition, PhoneFaith is piloting programs in Spanish this spring and summer. The programs will be available on the second Tuesdays of the month, starting on April and continuing through August.
Daily PhoneFaith dial-in presentations offer opportunities to inform and encourage, through mental health and wellness sessions, social meet-and-greet interactions, Bible games and prayer.
PhoneFaith was started by CRS Board Member, Dr. Dexter Thomas, who is blind, as he searched for tangible ways to connect with other people who were blind or visually impaired. It continues today under the leadership of Dr. Leanora Ruff, who organizes and coordinates the volunteer hosts and presenters needed for the weekly presentations.

Governor Pillen and UWM Announce Big Expansion of JAG Nebraska Program
On April 10, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO, United Way of the Midlands (UWM) announced a big expansion for the JAG Nebraska program.
They also welcomed Janelle Duray, president and CEO of the national JAG program, who was in Nebraska to highlight JAG’s success. “Nebraska is one of the highest performing JAG programs in the country,” Duray said. “It’s amazing to see the strong support JAG has here and I’m excited about its ongoing growth potential, which will benefit so many youth across the state.”
Since its beginning in 2019, JAG Nebraska has grown from three schools to currently serving 1,500 students in 34 middle and high schools for the 2023-24 school year. This new expansion will add an additional 51 programs for the 2024-25 school year – increasing the number of programs in Nebraska to 85, with a capacity to serve 4,000 students.
“We need more of our young people to pursue and find meaningful careers that interest them and connect with employers in Nebraska –and the JAG Nebraska program is helping us with both of these goals,” said Governor Pillen.
Powered by UWM, JAG Nebraska is a for-credit, classroom elective for middle and high school that helps students develop their personal and professional skillsets to overcome challenges they face. It provides hands-on instruction, career development, leadership skills and more to help students graduate and find success in college, the workplace and life.

Temperatures are rising and Stephen Center is collecting bottled water in preparation. Water is always in demand at Stephen Center, but it is imperative to bulk the supply as the warmer months approach. The high temperatures of summer pose a significant risk to anyone exposed, specifically people experiencing homelessness as they navigate through the process of finding permanent housing. Water is an essential item for the safety, well-being and success of clients at Stephen Center. “The majority of people served through Stephen Center programming are on foot as they tend to their schedule.” said Interim Chief Executive Officer, Teri Corcoran. “Whether they are employment-seeking, going to appointments or going to work, we want to help people avoid dangerous consequences of heat exposure by keeping them properly hydrated. Our community was generous last year, and we call on them again now to help us accomplish our mission.”
Donations can be brought to the Donation Center located on the south side of the 2723 Q St. building. The Donation Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Wounded Warriors Family Support (WWFS) will be holding a Ribbon Cutting and Open House to celebrate 20 years in Omaha on Monday, May 6, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at 11218 John Galt Blvd. STE 103. Every warrior has a next mission. They know that the transition to civilian life is a journey. And for every warrior, family member and caregiver, that journey looks different.
Their mission is to provide support to the families of those who have been wounded, injured or killed during combat operations. The families of our casualties suffer in many ways: some physically, some psychologically. WWFS services US Military Veteran Families in the Greater Omaha Community with a number of programs. Project Play Champion recipients are celebrated for their innovative approach to ensuring that sports serve the health and well-being of all children.
The "Girls Ref the World" program exemplifies what it means to be a Project Play Champion. By offering a comprehensive four-week academy for young women aged 14-24, teaching the basics of sports officiating and imparts essential life skills. Upon completion, participants are provided with everything they need to begin their journey as sports officials, including registration with the Nebraska State Activities Association and a stipend, ensuring they are ready to secure employment and certification as officials in Nebraska.

Outlook’s annual Tee It Up Fore Sight raises money to support Outlook Enrichment programs, which provide blind and visually impaired individuals with a wide range of resources and recreational activities helping people on their journey beyond vision.
“As we learned more about people who are blind and all of the work they do, we found that a paycheck alone wasn’t independence. So we were able to form other organizations, such as Outlook Enrichment, to serve many aspects of a life of a person who is blind or visually impaired to help them fulfill their personal and career goals,” says Eric Stueckrath, President and CEO of Outlook.
Blind and visually impaired golfers who will participate in the tournament are practicing now as part of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Jr. Blind Golfer Clinic. Participants partner with an adaptive sports specialist to practice putting, chipping and driving techniques. The group utilizes a state-of-the-art sports simulator at Outlook Enrichment, 72nd and F Sts.

Angels Among Us Named Runza’s Dine Out Partner
Angels Among Us was honored to be chosen as the Dine Out Partner for Runza’s Lincoln Co-op locations on March 26 raising just shy of $10,000! 10% of sales were donated that day from 25 locations in the following communities: Lincoln, Beatrice, Crete, David City, Fairbury, Geneva, Milford, Seward, Syracuse, Waverly and York.
The co-op of Runza owners voted to support Angels Among Us’ mission and engaged their staff and networks to promote the day and make it a success. All Runza staff wore stickers, put fliers in every bag, placed yard signs at their locations and helped to spread awareness leading up to the day. Angels Among Us had volunteers are various locations greeting folks and thanking them for their support. In addition to many people participating by dining or going through the drive-through, corporate partners stepped in to support. Angels Among Us’ partners such as Pinnacle Bank, Lutz, Don’t Panic Labs, Talent Plus and others made catering orders for their staff lunch that day to help support and have the opportunity to tell their staff about Angels Among Us.

The Malone Center Breaks Ground for New Building
The Malone Center is transforming its 14,000 sq. ft. building that stood as a staple in Lincoln for nearly 70 years. The new 55,000 sq. ft. building projected to be complete by 2025 will be built to withstand 100 more years of service to the people of Lincoln.
CEO of The Malone Center, John Goodwin, says the demolition and construction of the old building aren’t stopping their programs. He said if anything it’s lit a fire inside those with the center to get out into the community. “We’re more than just a building,” Goodwin explained. “Our job is to be out in the community, bringing that community center to them.”
Goodwin said they are temporarily relocating some of their offerings like their maternal wellness program to First United Methodist. Their Preschool program will be moved to City Impact.
According to the CEO, the Malone Center is excited to serve up longawaited updates for people who need it. He says the $25 million project will feature a large gymnasium with a state-of-the-art scoreboard, as well as classrooms to carry out programs.

Comprehensive Housing Report Focused on the Need of Adults with Autism and/or Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities in Omaha is Now Available to Public
In 2023, Omaha-based nonprofit, Autism Action Partnership (AAP), partnered with leading national experts and commissioned a housing market study to comprehensively assess the housing needs and preferences of adults living with autism and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities (A/I/ DD) in the Omaha area. A detailed summary of the project and its findings is now available to the public, with the goal of encouraging the creation of local neuro-inclusive housing developments.
The 2023 Omaha Housing Market Analysis: Data Driving a Place in the World for Autistic Adults and Others with Neurodiversities was conducted by the Make Waves Center for Community Development, as one of five centers of the Global Leadership Institute based at First Place® AZ. This organization is a charitable nonprofit in Phoenix with the vision of ensuring housing, healthcare and community options are as bountiful for people with autism and other neurodiversities as they are for everyone else.
This first-ever comprehensive study, commissioned by AAP of Omaha, addresses the housing needs and preferences of adults with A/I/DD. The analysis educated consumers on potential options, collected data on their needs and preferences, identified barriers to meeting demand and explored how public, private, nonprofit and philanthropic sectors can work together on market solutions.

Over 150 individuals converge to Omaha area lake site to qualify for August’s 50 Mile March.
On Saturday, April 13, the 50 Mile March Foundation welcomed over 150 individuals to Chalco Hills Recreation Area to ruck march 15 miles to qualify for their signature event to be held in August 2024.
The 50 Mile March is a 50 mile ruck march from the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol to Omaha, Nebraska to raise awareness and funds to support our community's Veterans. Founded in 2020, the March began as six individuals walking and fundraising. Today, over 150 walkers, nearly 100 volunteers and even more supporters helped execute this exciting community event. Participants trained, fundraised, and built a community in preparation of 22 hours and over 120,000 steps each August. This year's march, Operation Noble Watchman, will be held August 24-25.

Structural Steel Work Nearing Completion at Omaha Central Public Library
People passing by the corner of 72nd and Dodge Sts. can see the progress on the new Omaha Central Public Library. Construction crews expect to complete the structural steel work this spring and have the building exterior fully enclosed before summer.
The tower crane that has been used in construction is the first of its kind to be owned and constructed in the United States. The 180-foot-tall crane was customized for this project and can lift up to 35,000 pounds.
Crews will place a high-tech collection system called an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) inside the structure and keep it safely encased until it is installed later in the construction process. Omaha Public Library (OPL) will be the first public library system in the United States to have a storage system like this. Once the Central Library opens in 2026, the ASRS will support citywide distribution by storing items from OPL’s large collection, allowing library branches to utilize more space for neighborhood-driven programming while still providing an abundance of books and materials in every branch for patrons to discover and enjoy.
Omaha Public Library staff, Do Space staff and the construction and design teams continue to work on the interior and exterior details of the library, including planning for the selection of furniture, art, technology and more. Their goal is to make the library an inclusive, accessible and inviting hub for creativity, collaboration, education, innovation and workforce development. Located at the heart of a beloved neighborhood in North Omaha, the Father Tom Fangman Playground represents a significant milestone in CUES’s ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of their students, families and community. This vibrant space will be meticulously designed by Eric Crouch and Crouch Recreation to foster creativity, promote physical activity and encourage meaningful connections among families and friends.
Key features of the Father Tom Fangman Community Playground include: inclusive design, interactive play structures, out-door learning spaces and community gathering areas.
This groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 17, at Sacred Heart School. The Sacred Heart staff, students and parents got together with Father Tom and the CUES staff to celebrate the beginning of the construction.
The playground is set to be finished in August. They will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in the fall to celebrate the new playground!

Building Support for Housing Needs: Metropolitan Utilities District
Do Good Days recently wrapped up, but people continue to ask, “What does it mean to do good?” For Metropolitan Utilities District it means championing support for housing needs in the community.
As a customer-owned public utility, M.U.D.’s mission is to provide safe, reliable and cost-effective natural gas and water services to the community. They are making this happen every day for a population of more than 600,000 in Omaha and the surrounding areas.
M.U.D.’s 900-plus employees are dedicated to delivering these lifeessential services that people depend on each day. Utilities are used for heating, cooking, drinking, cleaning and laundry, which are vital to maintaining healthy and comfortable homes.
Although M.U.D. strives to keep rates among the lowest in the country, some customers in the community continue to struggle with utility expenses. M.U.D. began a utility assistance program in 1983 for seniors, people with disabilities and limited-income customers suffering severe financial hardship. The M.U.D. Home Fund connects those in need with those who can help. To date, the fund has raised more than $5 million and served more than 37,000 households.

The American Stroke Association Focuses on Defeating Stroke Through Education and Collaboration
Stroke can happen to anyone, at any age. In fact, globally about one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. During American Stroke Month, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, as part of a nationally supported collaboration with HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation, will teach people everywhere that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable.
A stroke happens when normal blood flow in the brain is interrupted. When parts of the brain don’t get the oxygen-rich blood they need, those affected brain cells die. In cases of stroke, response time matters. Unfortunately, most adults in the U.S. don’t know the F.A.S.T warning signs of a stroke.
Here are six ways you can act now to beat stroke:

The F.A.S.T. Experience (www.stroke.org/fast-experience) is a new digital tool launched by the American Stroke Association this month that engages users in a virtual experience educating them on what the warning signs of a stroke look, feel and/or sound like. By helping users to experience the stroke warning signs in a simulated way that is both educational and engaging, the expectation is that they will retain this information longer and share it with family and friends.
By simulating the symptoms of a stroke – Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 911 – the general public, caregivers, family members, and friends can better understand what stroke patients experience and equip them to spot stroke warning signs and help save a life in the future.

Your Pharmacist and Physician can provide valuable insights on cost-saving tips related to your specific medications. Ask about potential generic alternatives, switching to 90-day supplies or utilizing pharmaceutical company discount programs. Hospital-based social workers can help you find both local and federal assistance programs that can help with medication costs, along with manufacturer savings programs for chronic conditions such as cancer.
Use a Free Prescription Discount Card or Coupon:
Some of the most popular programs are GoodRX, SaveOnRx, Blink Health, SingleCare and WellRX. It’s worth noting that the Federal Trade Commission recently filed a complaint against GoodRx, alleging that the company violated the law by sharing personal health information about its users. GoodRx has agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine and stop sharing sensitive data with advertising companies. (The settlement still needs to be approved by the court.)
Join a Paid Prescription Savings Program:
With all the free prescription medication savings programs out there, you might wonder whether paid services are really necessary. It might come down to your personal preference, especially if you have a long-term relationship with a local pharmacy like Walgreens, which offers a $20 per year prescription savings club.
Or you could already be a member of a service like Amazon Prime, which has recently launched a prescription savings program for its members. While anyone can sign up for Amazon Prime, you’ll have to weigh the hefty $139 annual membership fee if you’re only signing up for the prescription savings and not using other Prime services like video or two-day shipping.
Before investing in a paid program, compare the savings (minus the fee) with free prescription drug savings programs.
Go Directly to the Drug Manufacturer for Discounts:
If the medication you need is a name brand without a generic available or if you prefer to use the name brand, you could find discounts directly from the drug manufacturer—but you typically must meet certain criteria.
Explore Online Resources:
You can visit the NeedyMeds website to search for medications by diagnosis or condition. You can review different drug manufacturer savings programs, find coupons and explore rebates.
RXAssist is a database that allows you to search individual drugs and compare prices by pharmacy. Physicians can also use RXAssist to find drug safety net programs or representatives who can offer coupons or drug samples. To qualify for most patient assistance programs, you’ll need to be uninsured, a U.S. citizen and meet income guidelines. For example, to qualify for Pfizer’s prescription assistance programs, income guidelines will vary by medicine, but start at “400% of the federal poverty level, adjusted for family size.” (For 2024 income, 400% of the federal poverty level is $60,240 for an individual.)
The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation:
The (PAN) Foundation is a non-profit organization based in the United States. Its mission is to help Americans pay for medical procedures and alleviate the financial burden associated with healthcare expenses. PAN focuses on supporting individuals living with life-threatening,
chronic and rare diseases. These patients often face significant outof-pocket costs for their prescribed medications. PAN covers more than 70 diseases. If you’re dealing with a specific condition, check if there’s a relevant disease fund that can help you. PAN also provides financial aid for transportation costs related to medical appointments.
Use an Online Mail-Order Pharmacy:
Check out online pharmacies like Mark Cuban’s Cost-Plus Drug Company, Blink Health, GeniusRX and DiRx. While you likely won’t be able to use your insurance at these online pharmacies, you might find that paying out of pocket will be at a lower price than you’d pay using insurance.
An obvious downside to mail-order pharmacies is that you won’t get your meds right away. If you need a medication right away, you’ll need to fill your first prescription locally and then transfer your prescription to the mail-order pharmacy.
Know Your Insurance Formulary:
With so many prescription drugs on the market, it’s hard for you or your doctor to know what will be covered by your prescription plan. But you can better equip yourself to save with your insurance plan’s formulary (the list of drugs covered by a prescription plan) at your side. When you get a new prescription, call your local insurance agent so she can look it up for you to see where it is on the formulary and what your co-pay will be.
Buy from Canada:
One of the most compelling reasons to consider buying prescription drugs from Canada is cost. Unlike the U.S., Canada regulates drug prices, resulting in significantly lower average costs for consumers. The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) ensures that prices remain reasonable. As a result, American drug prices are, on average, 218% higher than their Canadian counterparts, even though the products are often identical. Canadian drugs undergo rigorous testing for safety, like the United States. Health Canada, akin to the FDA, ensures the safety of Canadian drugs. Canadian pharmacies require a prescription from an authorized Canadian practitioner. However, American doctors can call or fax prescriptions to Canadian pharmacies through a process called “cosigning”. For the most part, if drugs require prescriptions in the U.S., they are only available by prescription in Canada as well. Remember to consult with your healthcare provider and explore reputable Canadian pharmacies for a reliable experience.
The important thing to remember about prescription medication is that you will always be your own best advocate, and it’s okay to ask questions of your doctor and pharmacist about any medication you’re prescribed. You might be surprised how a single conversation about drug costs can help you and your healthcare providers find savings—both today and in the future.
