Spread Local Love this holiday Season!
Here we are in December, fully submerged in the joyous holiday season. My mantra of the month (and of all time, really) is SHOP LOCAL! Our shopping habits definitely increase around this time of year as we hunt for gifts to put under the tree for our friends and family members—or employees and team members. Though online shopping at larger, out-of-market retailers is attractive for the sake of convenience and maybe even lower prices, I encourage you to prioritize the prosperity of this community we all call home. Spread “local love” this holiday season by doing your Christmas shopping at small businesses right here in Omaha!
As Michael H. Shuman, author of the book Going Local, put it: “Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.”
Small business owners invest more than money into their business. For many, their business is who they are—their livelihood is ingrained in their DNA. Small business owners have a lot more at stake than a CEO of a large corporation in the sense that their customers and employees are far more than just that to them. If we want to keep Omaha an amazing place to live, work, and play, we all have to do our part by supporting them—and the holidays are a perfect time for that!
In addition, as it is the closing month of 2022, I want to take this time to thank my amazing clients, readers, staff, and family and friends for making this year another great one. Being a business owner comes with challenges, as does anything in life, but all of these people in my life make it worth it. I truly feel blessed when I look around and see all the
people who have either trusted Strictly Business as an advertising partner or have become a meaningful part of my life in one way or another. Shayne and I are looking forward to going into 2023 with renewed energy and commitment to our clients. Every new year brings new highs and lows, new opportunities and challenges, new clients and friends, new events and experiences—I’m excited for it all!
However, even though the calendar will soon be changing, something that will not change is Strictly Business’s foundation of storytelling and building credibility for our clients, both in print and online. Advertising with Strictly Business is so much more than just running an ad. You’re working with a real team that is committed to local business. We value putting a face to the name. You can see this in the magazine through all the amazing free, valued-added editorial we offer. Whether it’s a press release, feature story, or River City Six, our goal is to help your audience make a personal connection with your organization. If you’re interested in making Strictly Business a part of your advertising strategy in 2023, please give me a call!
Lastly, I want to say a bittersweet farewell to our editor and director of operations, Hannah Hundley. Hannah has been with the magazine for almost five years, and we’ve enjoyed having her on the team. She has done a great job serving our amazing clients and has enhanced Strictly Business as a whole with her enthusiasim and commitment to our company values. Hannah will definitely be missed, but we are excited for her next adventure and wish her all the best!
Replacing Hannah is Cemre Lively, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her on board. Cemre has already shown that she is going to thrive in her role here at the magazine and continue to meet the needs of our advertisers and partners. Please help me welcome Cemre to the team! You can learn more about her by reading her press release in this month’s issue.
Let Strictly Business help you lock in your status as THE ExPErT in your industry, utilizing print, the internet, and social media. Find out how by contacting Paige at (402) 466-3330.

WE OWN IT SHARING A PIECE OF THE PIE
Farris Engineering, Inc. (Farris) has been a proud and successful 100% employee-owned company since 2012. Thanks to the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), Farris’ employees can share in the growth and prosperity of the company.
“I am proud to be an employee owner,” said Kate Breitenfeld, controller. “Employee ownership has been great for the company, our customers, and our team, and has made us even more invested in success.”
Employee-owned companies tend to see the biggest performance advantages when employees think and act like owners. The fact that Farris is 100% employee-owned closes the normal loop between what employees want to do and what owners manage to. Built on trust and accountability, employee ownership unifies and empowers Farris to better serve their clients, industry partners and community.
From well-known national brands to small local businesses like Farris, employee-owned companies are all around us. They create wealth for working people who are rooted in local communities. On average, employee-owners have nearly double the retirement wealth compared to non-employee-owners.
Farris employees automatically become an owner after regularly working 30 hours per week for one year. They also have the opportunity to purchase additional shares using funds in their 401K account and increase their ownership share. So, Farris’ employee-owners can literally say “We Own It” as they each share a piece of the pie.
“Farris has been in business for over 55 years, and we are very proud to be an 100% employee-owned ESOP company. We take pride in the company’s history and are just as pleased with the financial stability we have created over those 55 years of being in business,” said Breitenfeld. “Our financial position allows us to be an exceptional business partner and ensure our clients that our doors will be open for another 55 years, and beyond.”
Farris Engineering, Inc. is an industry leader in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering since being founded in Omaha in 1967. The employee-owned company provides value added expertise with employees versed in LEED AP, fire protection, geothermal and lighting design, sustainability and energy conservation, and commissioning.

Closet Organization Ideas from ShelfGenie
ShelfGenie knows what real organization is! On top of custom shelving, they also are the pros when it comes to updating a closet. Their closets are designed to the client’s needs, including the use of drawers, custom pullout shelving, and the height of closet rods that work for their clothing. ShelfGenie also does a no-cost, no obligation visit with the client to design a solution that is customized to their needs. Plus, their products have a lifetime warranty, so it is a one-time purchase. Some of ShelfGenie’s clients also add lighting to the sides of their closets or other spaces to offer additional illumination. This especially helps when the closet or cabinet has little light, and provides assistance to people with limited eyesight. If you think ShelfGenie’s services can be beneficial to you, reach out to them today to get in touch with a designer.
Every square inch of any closet is prime real estate. Give your space an organizational upgrade with one of these genius storage ideas for small closets. When a closet is well organized and easily accessible, you have peace of mind, which adds to your quality of life. When unorganized, closets can really weigh you down. This is even more important for smaller closets, where there is little room for error. ShelfGenie has the tips and tricks to get your closet in the best shape it can be in!
1. Expand Closet Space from Floor to Ceiling
Lacking closets in your older home? Adding a reach-in closet that spans from floor to ceiling is an elegant solution to upgrade your entire room. Another way to expand your space? Use mirrors on your sliding closet doors. Visually, mirrors expand any cramped space.
2. Find Studs, Add Shelves
If you find unused wall space in your closet, think about adding shelves. Shelf options are unlimited—metal, natural wood, laminated particleboard. Find which shelf brackets will best sustain the shelves you desire. Then, locate your wall studs. If needed, you can even install a mounted cabinet to serve as an extra closet.
3. Baskets & Bins
It can be unsightly to see stacks of clothing when the closet or shelving space is exposed. Baskets are a beautiful way to contain your things and maintain your closet’s aesthetic harmony. Options range from wicker baskets to linen bins to removable fabric bins to drop-front boxes. These elegant boxes, made in shirt or sweater-size, protect your clothing from dust, wrinkles and time.
4. Master Your Shoes
Shoes take up a lot of space, and when this area is disorganized, locating the right pair can be maddening. Stack your shoes behind doors, hang them in shoe organizers, or organize them on their own shelves. Plastic or linen drop-front shoe boxes can also help you protect and organize your shoes. For small closets, try stacking drop-front shoe boxes in the corner. These can be stacked high, yet shoes remain easily accessed by the drop-front door.
5. Think Outside the Box
When it comes to closet solutions that maximize space, thinking out of the box is what ShelfGenie does. Their custom solutions are individually tailored to your specific needs. ShelfGenies’s quality products and lifetime guarantees will improve your home’s value, as well as your daily quality of life. Schedule a ShelfGenie free design consultation to evaluate and optimize all your home’s problem areas to make your organization dreams come true.

Brian Edwards S CANTRON T ECHNOLOGY S OLu TIONSMeet Brian Edwards, director of information technology at Scantron Technology Solutions.
Tell us a little about your business. - Scantron Technology Solutions provides technology solutions and managed services to customers nationwide. Our focus is managed IT, managed print, hardware support, and project services for SMB, mid-market and enterprise customers. Our vision is as simple as this, to ignite achievement and growth with our expertise, technologies, and commitment to service.
How did you get started in the business? - When I was working for a computer reseller, I got experience with hardware, software, and networking. I also had several part-time programming jobs and database work. I continued to be exposed to a wide range of technology and industry as a result of working at a consulting firm, and I eventually started my own company. I developed software, did system integrations, managed infrastructure projects and provided business intelligence and virtual chief information officer (vCIO) services. I’m grateful for my consulting experience and the opportunity to learn about different businesses, what makes them tick, and how they deliver value to customers.
Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Megan is my best friend and a prodigious reader who can always recommend a good book. Our daughter Lucy plays volleyball and basketball and our son Henry is a swimmer. Otherwise they are typical teenagers! Our pets include dogs Gus and Norm, and the rabbit is Snowball. We have close relatives, shirttail relatives, in-laws and out-laws scattered across Nebraska and, for those less fortunate, other states.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - The poem “If-” by Rudyard Kipling is probably too long at four stanzas to include here, but I really like the themes of humility, integrity, and overcoming challenges. “If you can fill the unforgiving minute / With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, / Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, / And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!” There’s a lot more to it, check it out online.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I believe it is starting a business and running it for twelve years. The experience I gained working with diverse organizations at all levels was the most important reward and it is something I’m able to leverage in my current role at Scantron.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Growing the business, innovating, and delivering value – these are all challenges our customers also face. A motivated, talented team is a critical component of achieving these goals and needs to be a top priority for the organization, something that we’re always working on.
What is your favorite movie? - Tin Cup – every time it’s on I’m pulling for Roy McAvoy to win the US Open.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Optimist. It’s not always possible but I will search far and long for the silver lining or win-win outcome.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - We built a Little Free Library in front of our house and it gets a lot of circulation from both kids and adults. I found a book someone had left in there, Virgil Wander by Leif Enger, and really enjoyed it – a tale set in small Midwestern town about rebuilding and moving on.

Other significant achievements include increasing the attendance and attendee satisfaction at the CODE Conference this year and expanding our partnership with Quantum Workplace and UNO to offer the CODE assessment twice a year. Nikki Goff OVATION H EARTWOOD P RESERVEMeet Nikki Goff, memory care director at Ovation Heartwood Preserve.
Tell us a little about your business. - Ovation Heartwood Preserve is an urban, upscale retirement community with a continuum of care located in west Omaha. Ovation focuses on ensuring our residents are still exploring, engaging in an active lifestyle with the support they desire or need at any time. Ovation is an amenity rich experience for our residents and our staff; that has on-site 24-hour nurses. We are happy to have Meadowlark and Cottonwood as our two memory care neighborhoods at Ovation. Each neighborhood has 30 private suites with Meadowlark designed for only female residents and caregivers.
How did you get started in the business? - As a little girl I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. My first job, around the age of ten, was taking care of an elderly woman in the small town I grew up in. I would get her meals ready, clean her house, and help her pay her bills. I became a nurse because I thrive off the enjoyment I get from taking care of others. When you look in their eyes you can see so much love and appreciation. There is truly nothing better. I have been in the healthcare field for 27 years. My true passion is caring for those with dementia.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Helping residents and family overcome the stigma of Alzheimer’s disease. Removing the negative labels associated with the disease can help all who love and care for the resident to realize that their loved one can still live a beautiful life.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Becoming a licensed practical nurse, memory director at Ovation, receiving my CDP (Certified Dementia Practitioner) and MDCP (Montessori Dementia Care Practitioner).
Tell us a little about your family. - I have been blissfully married to my gorgeous husband Ryan for 26 years. We have four wonderful children Kirsten, Taylor, Averi, and RJ. They have blessed us with four grandchildren: Hadley, Waylon, Ty, and Kelby.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? Finally going to nursing school in my 30’s with three very busy daughters and a son on the way. Tell us a little about your business. - Strictly Business is a local news and direct marketing magazine in Omaha and Lincoln that is strong in print and online. We are all about branding names and faces because people like to do business with people they know, like, and trust. With over 29 years of experience, we are proud of our reputation as a reliable and positive publication and grateful for the opportunity to promote so many amazing local businesses and organizations each month.
How did you get started in the business? - I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May of this year with a degree in advertising and public relations. I got to experience a lot of different aspects of the advertising and journalism world while at school, so I was definitely hoping that I would find the right fit for me. I spent the summer looking for jobs, and Strictly Business just felt like the perfect place to start my career.
Tell us a little about your family. - I have three siblings, along with my dad and stepmom. We are all spread out across the country. My sisters live in Portland and Phoenix, my stepbrother lives in Nashville, and my parents can be found in the Orlando area. Both of my sisters got married this year, so it has been an exciting year for our family.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I am a homebody so I love to watch movies, but I am always down to hang out with my friends and go to concerts or musicals in the area.
Who inspires you? - My sisters. I am the youngest of my siblings and seeing my sisters achieve their goals and follow their ambitions has always been inspiring. I am grateful for their guidance and friendship every day.

CSi Announces Renovations at Spellman Child Development Center
The College of Saint Mary has finished renovations on the Spellman Child Development Center. The center, managed by Child Saving Institute (CSI), provides early childhood education services to families of college students and the general public. The renovations included new flooring, paint, a newly renovated commercial kitchen, a newly added staff lounge, a mother’s room, upgraded staff office and meeting space, and much more.
“The intent of the renovations is to make the day-to-date experience more enjoyable for the kids, parents, and teachers” said CSI’s Director of Early Childhood Education Kathy Hubbard.
The Spellman Child Development Center is currently enrolling toddlers and preschoolers.
Child Saving Institute’s Early Childhood Education curriculum implements the latest research on brain development and attachment. Children’s brains are wired to learn through play and through exploring the world around them, and CSI provides an optimal environment of individualized, responsive, and stimulating experiences. So much more than a daycare, the childcare program utilizes an evidence-based assessment to promote academic and developmental growth, ensuring children who leave the program are ready for kindergarten.
Child Saving Institute realizes that mental health is equally as important as physical health for people of all ages. They understand that to come together and move forward as a community, we have to take care of each other. To learn more about CSI and the programs and services offered, please visit www.childsaving.org.

heartland hope Mission Seeks toy Donations for “Adopt a Family” program
The holiday season can put a financial strain on many struggling families in the Omaha metro. You can help by “adopting” a family in need with Heartland Hope Mission. By adopting a family, you will help to provide children with new toys for Christmas. With the current inflation, Heartland’s pantry numbers have increased by 45% since last year. This year, they are anticipating serving 4,000 children. Another way you can help is through monetary donations. To sign up to adopt a family or give a donation, go to heartlandhopemission.org.
Heartland Hope Mission also has several volunteer shifts available during the holidays. Volunteers can help distribute toys during their Hope-Filled Christmas event during the third week of December. If you are interested in volunteering, email eddimar@ heartlandhopemission.org.
Heartland Hope Mission operates one of the largest food pantries in the state, but they are “More Than a Pantry” by helping families work toward self-sufficiency. MiCAh house in need of pantry Donations
After price increases
With the prices increasing nationwide, MICAH House is struggling to feed clients nutritious meals each day. Prepandemic, MICAH House had many local community members and businesses donate pounds of meat and pantry items throughout the year. MICAH House is now having to purchase canned goods and fresh produce, not just groceries needed to complete recipes. Last year this time, operations would on average spend $250 on recipe items. Over the past few months, MICAH House has had to spend $700-$1,000 every two weeks. In total, MICAH House served more than 29,000 meals to families and women in need last year.
To help put this into perspective, MICAH House Operations Manager shares “It’s hard for people to understand what it takes to feed our clients even just for one meal. Spaghetti, for example, for just one meal we need ten one-pound boxes of pasta and five large Ragu bottles of sauce. Normally we make our own sauce, but with produce prices the way they are, that is out of the question.”
MICAH House is asking for your help to stock the pantry! Organize a personal or company-wide donation drive and collect canned fruit, vegetables, pasta, and other goods to provide healthy options for children, families, and women experiencing homelessness and living at MICAH House. Check out their page “How to Host an Inkind Drive”, or make a monetary donation at themicahhouse.org.
Christian Record Services Releases Mobile App for Member Resources
Emerging technology has been a part of Christian Record Services since its start in 1899, from a braille press to producing recordings on vinyl records, to cassette tapes, digital cartridges, and mp3 files. With smartphones being so prevalent, and an essential tool for many people who are blind, it’s only natural the organization would develop an app as a new way to share uplifting content.
The Liberty Link app by Softlink International can be found on Google Play and Apple. Christian Record Services members can listen to audio books, download DAISY and BRF files (proprietary formats for audio and braille), request books from the library to be sent in the mail, read large print books online, and have audio programs pushed to their email accounts.
Currently, more than 650 audio books are available through the app, with more than 75 members accessing the library features, including the ability to request more than 1,500 titles available through the library. Christian Record Services has worked with Softlink, the parent company of Liberty Link, to develop key features which improve accessibility, and anticipates the usage of the app will continue to increase.
Each year, Christian Record Services impacts thousands of lives through services provided to them without cost. All people who are legally blind or have physical impairment that prevents them from holding reading material or focusing on ink print are eligible for free services. For more information, please visit christianrecord.org/member-services.

project harmony Seeks Vehicle for AntiTrafficking Services
Project Harmony’s Anti-Trafficking Services needs another vehicle! To support at-risk youth and meet them where they are, the Anti-Trafficking specialists require a reliable car to keep their identity safe from traffickers. Not to mention, December is National Donate a Car Month! Help them by donating a vehicle for this much-needed service for victims and youth at-risk of trafficking in the community by contacting Amy Chisholm at achisholm@projectharmony.com.

The job of the specialist is to build rapport with the youth, help the youth with their basic needs, and hopefully build enough trust with the youth to allow them come forward with information about their traffickers and/or their situations. They also have a services coordinator who works to identify available services in the community for trafficking survivors as well as to gather professionals for a multi-disciplinary team response to help these youth that have been identified for the program.
The vision of this program is to help lead Omaha Police to arrests or criminal charges on the traffickers while providing youth and families with the necessary services to help them heal and move forward from the trauma of sex trafficking.

Beginning as the “Mobile Kitchen”, New Visions provided nightly meals to the homeless and hungry from a bus under the Council Bluffs viaduct. Two years later, a new facility named “MOHM’s Place” was built to provide thousands of meals annually to hungry men, women, and children. As community need increased, MOHM’s Place expanded and began providing shelter, transitional living, increased meals, and support services for the homeless. In September 2008, New Visions built the “New Visions Complex” in Council Bluffs as the first facility in Southwest Iowa that provided a 62 bed men’s shelter, 26 permanent supportive housing facility for single men and single women, a meal site that would seat 250, and an administration building for the homeless and near-homeless. In 2012, “New Visions Omaha” was built, providing 26 transitional living units for veterans at no cost to the veteran and an additional 14 permanent supportive housing units for the veterans to discharge to if they are still in need of supportive services. The campus is the only facility of its kind in the Midwest. In both locations, clients are provided with individualized case management, therapy, jobtraining, budgeting education, and community support services. Community impact grant Awards Make holidays Brighter for western iowa Families
During the 2022 Community Impact Grants Cycle, the Community Foundation for Western Iowa funded four holiday projects and events dedicated to making the holiday season brighter for families in the cities of Avoca, Carter Lake, Council Bluffs, and Treynor.
Community Impact Grants are awarded annually to eligible taxexempt, nonprofit organizations or governmental entities and used for creative or impactful projects that meet a clear, identifiable need in Pottawattamie County.
The Community Foundation supported two “Sensory Santa” events for the Dexter’s Dream Foundation for 60 families of children with disabilities or special needs. Families experienced an individual 20-minute visit with Santa in a judgement-free zone, complete with refreshments and cookies, a flash drive full of photographs, and special sensory-seeking toys.
Additional Impact Grant funding supported the City of Avoca’s “Santa’s Ho Ho Hoe Down” on Avoca’s Main Street that provided free activities and entertainment to more than 500 rural Pottawattamie County residents, the Carter Lake Winter Village Festival’s annual holiday event where grant funds were used to purchase gifts for more than 175 children, and The 712 Initiative’s “100 Block Holiday Lights” project that upgraded power outlets for 28 trees to provide a holiday essence and vibrancy throughout the winter months.

The discussion around mental health has been spotlighted more and more over the last few years. In 2013, former President Barack Obama launched a national conversation on mental health to reduce the shame and secrecy associated with mental illness, encourage people to seek help if they are struggling, and encourage individuals whose friends or family are struggling to connect them to help.
From 2013 to 2016, 8.1% of American adults aged 20 and over had depression. In 2022, one in ten adults struggle with depression of some kind, while almost 20% are struggling with different types of mental illness. The stigma around mental health has improved with the commonality of experiencing mental health issues, but it hasn’t gone away completely.
Going into the fourth year of a global pandemic, many people have had to adjust their lives in more permanent ways than originally anticipated. Whether it was permanent job loss or the loss of a loved one, the toll that the pandemic has taken on people around the world has started to feel somewhat like the norm.
While medication and other treatments can make things easier, it is important to continue the conversation and support those around us. People feel obligated to lie or power through their struggles, but having grace and giving them the freedom to slow down and take a breath can be the extra bit of support they need that day.
One of the most effective methods to treat mental health is through counseling and therapy. Clearwater Counseling, PC is one of the many resources available in Omaha. We spoke to Kayla Leddy for more information on improving the stigma and experience for those struggling.
compassionate team of professionals work with our clients to evaluate and treat a variety of mental health diagnoses so that they can live happier, fuller lives,” said Kayla. “We work with our clients to treat a wide variety of mental health diagnoses. We know that mental health is just as important as physical health. Many people experience mental health struggles at some point in their life. Mental health battles may vary from anxieties, behavioral, life transitions, depression and stress, all of which can affect our mood, thoughts, and behaviors.”
While getting the help you need is important, people struggling with mental health also need support and understanding from their loved ones and community.
“Those who seek therapy are looking for clarity in certain areas of their life. They are also wanting to work through complex emotions or even a traumatic experience. Sometimes, those who seek help are challenging their negative thinking patterns and striving to learn new techniques to cope with difficult scenarios,” explained Kayla. “The more we talk about mental health, the higher chance we have of saving more lives. It’s important to take steps to educate yourself and others. Consider talking with a health care professional or mental health provider about your own mental health.”
Clearwater Counseling, PC is committed to making a difference in the way our community approaches mental health and the stigma around getting help. If you are looking for a place to start your journey, look no further than the wonderful team at Clearwater Counseling, PC.

With winter settling in and the holidays in full swing, this season is beyond busy and it can be easy to push therapy to the side. Senior Living
The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for seniors who can’t be with family due to a variety of issues or if they struggle to participate in holiday traditions they once practiced in the past. If you have a senior loved one in your life that has these struggles, you may feel overwhelmed with uncertainty of how to care for and include them. We want you to be able to enjoy this wonderful time of year with your loved ones safely and happily. This is also a good time of year to prepare your senior loved ones for the winter, so keep reading to learn how you can keep them safe during the change in season.
Catering to Every Stage of Life
Making the right choice when moving into a senior living facility is important. Many facilities have different divisions that cater to your needs in every stage of life. Immanuel in Omaha and Council Bluffs serves seniors at 11 communities on six campuses. Immanuel provides senior living options in independent and assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing, and long-term care communities. Each of the Immanuel communities offers a whole host of amenities, robust wellness, and life enrichment programming, exceptional dining, and spiritual programs and support.
The holidays at Immanuel are an extraordinary time for both residents and staff. Connie Chisholm , the director of communications at Immanuel, gave us a glimpse into the magical time that is the holiday season at Immanuel!
“Our executive chefs create menus and services to build holiday cheer, our Life Enrichment leaders produce robust and active programming that quickly becomes holiday tradition inside the community, and our Mission and Spiritual teams provide a full range of worship opportunities and support throughout this time of year,” said Connie. “Recently, Immanuel kicked off the holiday season by hosting Mr. Gerald Charles Dickens, the great-great-grandson of the author Charles Dickens, for an exceptional performance of his one-man show of A Christmas Carol.”
While the holidays are an exciting time at Immanuel, they aren’t complete without the people you love. To show extra appreciation for your loved ones living in a senior living facility, Connie recommends giving the gift of connection.
“More and more aging adults are comfortable with using technology. They are looking for devices to stay connected to friends and family, up on current local and national events, and hobbies and interests,” Connie shared. “Immanuel community residents are going digital through our resident portal, where they can get their wellness and life enrichment invitations and program information, dining venue menus, and can send messages to fellow residents and staff all from any laptop or mobile device.”
After experiencing a global pandemic, it has become clearer that time is precious and we may not always have access to our older relatives, whether it is because safety or lack of travel options.
While they may be physically isolated in an event like this, having the option to video call or see photos of loved ones can make the world of difference in their daily mood.
Keep Moving
According the CDC, adults 65 years of age and older who are generally fit and do not have limiting health conditions should get 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week, and work on musclestrengthening at least twice a week. This aims to prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with age, as well as grow one’s muscles to allow them to continue to perform their day-to-day activities without becoming dependent on others.
Injuries come when you least expect them, and as you age, the healing process often becomes longer, leading to difficulties in living your day-to-day life. To get yourself or your loved one back into their pre-injury health and strength, visit See The Trainer .
See The Trainer has a variety of sports medicine products that can help seniors who want to live an active lifestyle protect themselves from aggravating a past injury or a weak part of the body. They also offer exercise products, such as exercise balls, shoulder pulleys, foam rollers, and more, so you can stay fit right from your home.
In the event that you or your loved one finds themselves going into surgery, See The Trainer can help you through the rehabilitation process.
“We have a variety of helpful products that can assist someone going through rehabilitation after a major surgery or injury so that they can safely get back to their normal routine as soon as possible,” shared Owner Kristie Egan . “We understand that it would be challenging to have to adjust your daily routine for weeks or months due to something unexpected. Our products can help you through your recovery to ensure everything heals properly and you can get back to your pre-injury routine.”
Visit See The Trainer today to see how they can help you or your loved one continue to stay active and live comfortably at home.
Person-Centered Care
When visiting loved ones for the holidays, you may see a change in their wellness, which can be overwhelming if you are unsure of what steps to take to keep them protected. “Ovation’s mission is to enhance the life of every person we serve and the holidays give us the opportunity to create events that make the month of December memorable,” said Collette. “Ovation is celebrating this special time of year with life enrichment programs that include a holiday music performance, armchair world travel, featured menu items in Lorraine’s Kitchen, a Christmas luncheon and family gatherings to name a few,” stated Collette.

Know the Signs
Kyle Johnson with CCA Home Care had much to say on the importance of addressing all aspects of physical health for seniors as early as possible, especially leading into the winter months.
“Declining eyesight or hearing, mobility problems, and memory issues can lead to losing the ability to drive, an increased risk of falling, and everyday tasks becoming more difficult to perform,” he said. “These health concerns are even more important to take into consideration during the winter. Making sure seniors have mental stimulation, companionship,
transportation for outings, and assistance with personal care or household chores can help keep these issues under control.”
CCA refers caregivers who are CNAs and can assist seniors with companionship, personal care, light housekeeping, and much more. They have caregivers available to help starting at one hour or up to 24 hours a day, along with access to short-term assistance in the case of an emergency. This flexibility gives families the peace of mind knowing their loved one is being cared for by a qualified and caring individual.
CCA Home Care also produces the ElderCare Resource Handbook. The Handbook is an all-inclusive listing of services, programs, and other resources available for the aging in each area. With this handbook, they hope seniors and their families can make informed decisions to enhance their quality of life and independence.

Don’t Compromise Comfort
Pat Killeen, owner of Engineered Controls believes both comfort and energy efficiency are achievable with the right tools.
“Today more than ever, building owners want their facilities to be environmentally responsible and healthy places to live and work,” emphasized Pat. “They also want to optimize the energy usage without compromising comfort. Together a tall order to accomplish, but at Engineered Controls that technology is available today.”
Engineered Controls can play a very big part in assisting new and existing building owners with controlling their buildings’ energy costs. Considering the fact that a building’s lighting and HVAC loads account for nearly 80% of a building’s energy usage, there are plenty of energy strategies that a Building Automation System can provide maximizing the energy strategy options available to building owners. Essentially, Engineered Controls can assist in total building control and help provide a healthier and more energy-efficient environment for occupants.
“To help our customers in identifying efficiency areas in their buildings, Engineered Controls has developed Energy Optimization programs,” Pat explained. “They are designed to leverage a broad portfolio of energy efficiency products and solutions, as well as offer a high level of energy expertise to commercial buildings in the hands of our skilled and knowledgeable professionals. Our team can help building owners and managers obtain realworld data to help them make fact-based decisions about how to optimize their buildings for occupants’ comfort while saving energy at the same time.”
Engineered Controls’ mission is to provide their customers with high quality products and services that create efficient, safe, and comfortable building environments. Their team of qualified and
experienced employees must strive to be the most cost-effective producers in the marketplace by consistently focusing on improving processes, innovation, and teamwork. When you work with them, you know you are getting the best possible results and helping save energy at the same time.
Solutions You Can Count On
Regular maintenance of your furnace will ensure it’s operating properly and save you money on your monthly heating bills. When you get regular maintenance from the pros at Ideal Heating & Air Conditioning , you will have peace of mind that your system is working the way it should and that your family is safe and will remain comfortable no matter the weather.
Looking for an environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your Nebraska home? Consider a geothermal heat pump. These pumps can be installed in new construction or existing homes. They use special piping and equipment to transfer the natural heat of the earth to your home. These systems need little maintenance and use only a small amount of energy. When you heat or cool your home with a geothermal heat pump, you reduce air and water pollution, produce few emissions, and lessen your carbon footprint.
Simply put, a geothermal system pulls heat from the ground to heat your home in the winter, and it dumps heat from your home into the ground to cool it in the summer. Just a few feet below the frost line, the ground is a constant ~50 degrees Fahrenheit year round. A water-based solution circulates through underground pipes where it absorbs the ground’s heat and is carried into the geothermal heat pump.
The solution exchanges its heat with the liquid refrigerant inside the heat pump. The refrigerant is then vaporized and passed through a compressor where its temperature and pressure are increased. Finally, the hot vapor enters a heat exchanger where it transfers its heat to the air. This hot air is distributed through the home’s ductwork and warmed to whatever temperature set on the thermostat.
For every 1 unit of energy used to power your geothermal system, 4 units of heat energy are supplied. That’s about 400% efficient! Geothermal heat pumps can achieve this efficiency because they don’t create heat – they just transfer it. Only about one-third to one-fourth of the energy delivered in heating with geothermal systems comes from electricity consumption. The rest is extracted from the ground.
If there are areas in your Omaha home that are consistently colder or hotter than the rest of your house, you may want to consider a zone control system installed by the professionals at Ideal Heating & Air Conditioning. This system works hand in hand with your thermostats to heat or cool only the necessary rooms and keep temperatures consistent throughout your entire home.
The system is connected to a central control panel that blocks or releases either cold or hot air to create a stable temperature in every room. All you have to do is set the temperature for each zone on your thermostat and the system does the rest of the work for you. Zone control systems are ideal for multi-level homes, those with a concrete slab for a foundation, houses with large open areas, homes that have finished attic or basement bedrooms, or large floor plans with many different spaces.
Not only does a zone control system make your home more comfortable, but it can also save you money on your monthly heating and cooling costs.
Seal in the Savings!
The Streamline Energy Solutions team of energy-efficiency specialists operates with the goal of saving energy—and saving you money. Streamline’s energy auditing services coupled with a variety of weatherization upgrades maximize your savings while minimizing your home’s energy usage. Whether it be new
construction or retrofitting existing structures, contractors, builders, and homeowners can rely on the team to go above and beyond.
Established by cofounders Nathan Capps and Jen Keller , they provide a holistic approach to energy efficiency to keep money in your wallet and take it easy on the environment. Streamline prides themselves on being a one-stop-shop for all of your home energy-efficiency needs, providing various insulation and weatherization services, coupled with a crucial blower door test, to create immediate improvements in how your home uses energy.
“One of the biggest upgrades we recommend to create the maximum impact when someone wants to insulate their home is air sealing,” said Jen. “We’ll locate all the accessible crevices in your attic, including around your fixtures and top plates and seal them so to prevent conditioned air from leaking into the attic space. That preps the attic for us to insulate with blown-in fiberglass. We prefer this product over cellulose because it doesn’t settle over time, does not absorb moisture, and is a lot cleaner product. Of course, the baffles we install in an attic are a crucial step in the process, too, because they keep the insulation from blocking air flow through your soffit vents and provide necessary ventilation. Proper attic ventilation reduces the risk of ice dams in the winter and the build up of condensation in the attic space, which could lead to mildew or mold.”
Streamline uses CertainTeed Insulsafe SP blown-in insulation not only because it doesn’t settle but also because it provides better coverage, excellent sound control, lasts for the life of your home to reduce long term energy demand and costs; is environmentally sustainable and formaldehyde-free; and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. This isn’t your typical itchy fiberglass. It is actually soft to the touch! Another fabulous offering from Streamline Energy Solutions that is not universal to all insulation companies is a blower door test because not everyone is BPI (Building Performance Institute)-certified to administer them. As a BPI-certified auditor, Jen starts by connecting the blower door device to one of the exterior doors of your home to audit energy loss.
Jen also owns Halo Custom Lighting. This sister business has become tremendously popular with versatile and fully customizable lighting options for your home.
Halo Custom Lighting is a permanent lighting solution for all your holiday needs. The team at Halo will help install your lights, and then they’re built to last around 20 years. The lights have so many different options to cater to any holiday or special day, and are conveniently controlled by an app where you can create your own colors and patterns. These lights can be used for more than just
the holidays with a full spectrum of LED colors that can highlight your home during any time of the year.
Upgrades That Save Power
At Langer Electric , they pride themselves on the relationship that they build with each of their customers. The chances are that you will have more than one electrical need in your lifetime. They want to earn your business for life. They will do so by providing quality work, competitive pricing, and convenient servicing, all while being quick and efficient. Langer Electric strives to provide 100% customer satisfaction with affordable, efficient, and convenient servicing.
With energy costs rising, energy efficiency is more important than ever before. Perhaps your home is not as efficient as it could be. However, electrical repairs and upgrades can offset high utility prices and, in some cases, pay for themselves in the long run.
There are many ways to upgrade your electrical system to become more eco-friendly and efficient. If you live in an older home, chance are there hasn’t been an update to the wiring and other components for awhile.
If your home still operates using outdated aluminum wiring, you’re not only consuming more energy than necessary, but you’re also walking a very thin safety line.
Aluminum wiring presents a hazard when connected to light fixtures and receptacles because it cannot maintain a connection without some degree of deterioration. As the wiring continues to deteriorate over time, be ready to deal with persistent, daily power outages and soaring energy bills.
Saving energy can come from more than just updating your outdated system. Even if you live in a newer home, there are technologies created every day with energy efficiency in mind.
We all have lighting in our homes, and many of us probably don’t think about the little changes we could be making to the lights in our homes. Modern LED bulbs can reduce lighting-related energy usage by 50% to 75%. Both LED and CFL bulbs use less energy and now produce light as vibrant as their incandescent counterparts. These bulbs last longer too, meaning you save on replacement costs.
“It’s pretty common for electrical work to include upgrading everything to LED,” shared Owner Chris Langer . “LEDs use 90% less electricity than the standard incandescent bulb, so you’re getting more light for less power.”
Along with the upgrade to LEDs, a great energy saving option is light switch timers and dimmers. Sometimes, the most energy wasted at home comes from lights staying on and forgotten. Installing light switch timers can help cut your light consumption significantly. With timers, you’ll be able to set a specific time at night when your lights turn off without you having to remember every day.
Additionally, dimmer switches can help you set a comfortable mood while shaving off the amount of energy used per light. Lightbulbs’ lifespans also increase with dimmers, helping you save on lightbulb replacement overall.
We should all try to be more energy efficient, but if you’re unsure of where to start, we recommend contacting these local professionals. They have the tools and resources you need to relish in the benefits that come with energy efficiency!
