Engrammetron
The Learning Kit Project, led by Dr. Phil Winne one of the Canada Research Chairs in our Faculty and a co-editor of the The Handbook on Educational Psychology, is mapping pathways and developing catalysts to empower people who live, work and learn in Canada’s knowledge-driven economy. The aim of the Learning Kit Project is to accelerate, coordinate, and expand research and development in e-learning and the learning sciences. The research team has developed software tools to assist learners across the life course so that they can study more effectively, learn more easily, and continue to improve skills for life-long learning.
Dr. Stephen Campbell has established the ENGRAMMETRON, one of the world’s first mathematics educational neuroscience laboratories. Dr. Campbell’s work in educational neuroscience advances knowledge and understanding to improve the effectiveness of Computer-Enhanced Mathematics Learning Environments in mathematics teacher education. His research explores computer-assisted learning and the ways it may contribute to or inhibit the learning of mathematics. To date, the ENGRAMMETRON has been granted more than one million dollars in research funds, including the Canada Foundation for Innovation: New Opportunities grant.
Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG) The IERG is founded on the work of SFU education professor and
internationally-renowned scholar, Dr. Kieran Egan, a recipient of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and winner of the Whitworth Award. The theories, principles, and practices developed by Dr. Egan and the IERG researchers is called Imaginative Education, which focuses on engaging the imaginations of students and teachers to make the learning experience meaningful. The work of IERG has been developed and expanded world-wide and the practice of Imaginative Education is demonstrated in classrooms locally and abroad.
CRECHE
The Centre for Research on Early Childhood Health and Education (CRECHE) focuses on child health and early education, specifically in relation to the interplay between biology and environmental experiences that influence child health and in turn, psychosocial development and learning. The Centre’s mission is to generate and share knowledge about child health and early education to enrich the lives of young children and their families. Through community outreach in real world settings, the Centre also strives to promote change that favours children in early education and public policy at local, national and international levels.
Centre for Education, Law, and Society (CELS) CELS is an endowed centre within
the Faculty of Education and was created to promote an understanding of law and its role in society. Working primarily with teachers, school administrators, as well as, educational and legal organizations, the main purpose of CELS is to improve the legal literacy of children and youth through a program of teaching, curriculum development, research, and community initiatives. Law-related education addresses issues of social justice, human rights and multiculturalism and has a natural connection with peace and global education. Rethinking Teaching in Higher Education
Rethinking Teaching in Higher Education is a group of researchers based at Simon Fraser University, McGill University (Montreal), and Concordia University (Montreal). The primary research interest of this group is teaching development as they work with professors through workshops to draw on their understanding of knowledge development in their disciplines, and link this understanding to the way they teach. In the process, an analysis of the rationale for a teaching method and how it relates to learning occurs, as well as, different strategies for teaching also emerge.

Academic Programs
WE DELIV E R ACADE M IC PROGRAM S THAT ARE INNOVATIVE AND RESPONSIVE For example, our graduate programs are identified with a record of academic excellence, our field programs are designed based on the needs of teachers in today’s classroom, and through a differentiated staff model, our PDP modules are infused with the expertise of teachers from your communities. In the Faculty of Education, we have five program areas:
Undergraduate Programs
Professional Programs
We have a range of undergraduate programs for students in all faculties interested in learning more about the field of Education. Opportunities range from selecting a single course elective to completing one of our many Education minors.
Professional Programs sponsors the acclaimed Professional Development Program (PDP). The PDP was the foundation on which Simon Fraser University built the Faculty of Education, and is a full-time, one-year program that is offered in the Lower Mainland and various communities throughout the province.
Students who wish to become teachers must prepare their undergraduate coursework accordingly by selecting the appropriate majors and minors and then applying to the Professional Development Program (PDP). Normally, the PDP year is either a fifth year of a B.Ed. degree or part of a second degree course sequence. A unique initiative administered by the Faculty of Education through Undergraduate Programs is the Foundations of Academic Literacy (FAL) program. FAL was designed with the aim of enhancing the confidence and ability of SFU’s students to have a successful post-secondary experience through the development of written and oral literacy skills.
We are dedicated to the development of outstanding teachers – ethically responsible and competent professionals who are committed to preparing children and youth to live as ethical, informed, and contributing citizens in a democratic, pluralistic society. Successful completion of the PDP leads to a recommendation to the B.C. College of Teachers for a B.C. Teaching Certificate. www.educ.sfu.ca/pdp

Commu n i t y i n volve me n t The Faculty of Education is a global education leader with a reputation based on engaging meaningfully with communities. From these partnerships have emerged innovative and responsive programs that meet the needs of classroom practice today, and our academic research pursuits inform dialogue for education issues in the future. Over the years, we have worked closely with schools, school districts, administrators,
government, and networks of educators. These partnerships essentially facilitate knowledge sharing and collaborative initiatives that include the expertise and voice of a diverse group of education stakeholders. Engaging with the community is also a way for us to ensure we are responsive to needs and that our programs are relevant. In terms of program delivery, we offer Education courses at all three of the
SFU campuses – Burnaby,
Surrey, and Vancouver – and have established off-campus programs that are delivered directly in some of the communities we serve. In the Faculty of Education, community partnerships will continue to be a priority as we continue and expand our work throughout British Columbia, across Canada, and around the world.
