Allison Fisher 6 Time Winner! “I am finally back,” said an excited Allison Fisher moments after capturing her sixth International Tournament of Champions title. Allison now leads Ga Young Kim who holds five Tournament of Champion titles. The thrill of victory was all the greater since it had been several years since she won her last Tournament of Champion title. The spirited $15,000 winner-take-all event was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, September 21. Fisher, the 2016 Masters Champion, defeated Kelly Fisher in the final match and was crowned the new Woman’s “Champion of Champions.” The semi and final matches require a player to win two sets, race to four games each set. In the event of a tie, the pressure becomes brutal with a one game sudden death tiebreaker. The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped for broadcast by ESPN beginning Sunday, December 11 at 1:00 pm EST on ESPN2.

“We may look cool out there, but the pressure is overwhelming,” said Allison. “I knew I had to play well from the start being matched first against Ga Young, and then to meet Kelly in the finals I couldn’t let up.” Kelly Fisher started out strong in both sets of the Final with a 2-0 lead, only to see Allison come back in each set and win 4-2, 4-2 for the Championship trophy and the winner’s take all check. Allison had to go through Ga Young Kim in the first semifinal. Ga Young, the 2016 WPBA U.S. Open winner, got ahead early three games to one but Fisher fought back and won the first set 4-3. Fisher then took complete control, playing perfectly and defeated Ga Young 4-0 in the second set. The other semifinal also brought cheers from the crowd. Kelly Fisher of Ireland prevailed against Jasmin Ouschan of Austria by a score of 4-3 and 4-2. Jasmin played tough and led in the first set but missed a couple of key shots allowing Kelly to close her out. The crowd gave Allison Fisher a standing ovation when she won the “Champion of Champions” title, her sixth, making her the winningest player in Tournament of Champions history. She raised her arms in victory and then accepted the winner’s purse of $15,000. The trophy and the check were presented by Gregg Hovey of Billiards International. The 2016 event was the 19th Annual International Tournament of Champions. Bill Talerico, Executive Vice President of Sports & Entertainment for Trump Taj Mahal, was delighted with the play and the crowd of pool fans. “We were extremely pleased with this event,” he said. “This is the last event to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal, and it was first class all the way. I wish we could hold this event next year. It was great for Atlantic City.”

Jayson Shaw Wins 25th Int’l Challenge of Champions “I watched this Tournament as a young boy and to now win it is amazing” said an elated Jayson Shaw moments after capturing the 2016 International Challenge of Champions title. The pressure packed $25,000 winner-take-all event was held at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 20. Shaw, from Scotland, defeated Shane van Boening of the United States in “sudden death” in the final match and was crowned the new “Champion of Champions.” The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped by ESPN for telecast beginning Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 EST “You have to play your best the entire tournament,” said Shaw “There’s no margin for error. I won the lag to break in Sudden Death and I knew if I missed one shot I would lose $25,000! That is pressure.” Shaw played Kevin Cheng of Taiwan in the first Semifinal match. Cheng was off his game and Shaw played flawlessly winning both races to 5 handily 5-0 and 5-3. Shaw, the 2016 Derby City Classic 10 Ball Champion and Bergen Open 9 Ball Champion 9-Ball Champion then met Shane van Boening in the Finals who had defeated Alex Pagulayan, the 2016 Canadian Open Champion, in a sudden death tie breaker in the other semifinal. Alex won the first set 5-3 and Shane won the second set 5-4. The sudden death game went back and forth with Shane pulling out a victory. In the Finals, battling back and forth Shaw won the first set 5-4 and Van Boening took the second set 5-1. The momentum appeared to be with van Boening, but in the one game sudden death Shaw won the lag, ran the table, and emerged the winner. The crowd gave Shaw a standing ovation when he won the final match. He raised his arms in victory and then accepted the highest single purse in international winner-take-all tournaments. The trophy and the check were presented by Gregg Hovey of Billiards International. The 2016 event was the 25th annual International Challenge of Champions and the very last event to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, set to close on October 10, 2016. Bill Talerico, Executive Vice President Sports & Entertainment for Taj Mahal, was delighted with the event and the support displayed by the crowd of pool fans. “This is a great event for the Taj Mahal to go out on. I am only sorry we will not be around to host this again next year.”

In Memory Of ....

Tom Simpson 1951 - 2016 by: Mark Finkelstein One Saturday morning about a month ago I got a call from Candace Coffin, Tom Simpson’s wife, telling me that Tom had died the night before. He was on the way to the hospital and had a heart attack. His passing was sudden and a shock to me. That is the last thing I could ever imagine. I have been working with Tom for about 10 years and have done close to 100 seminars with him over the years. During that time I have come to understand the passion and love for the game that Tom exuded. Tom was a true pioneer and role model for players and instructors alike. Tom encouraged me to write about pool and was instrumental in exposing me to the bigger pool world. Tom had that quiet ability to motivate me to always be looking for ways to do better. I only know pieces about Tom’s life before he became a full time Instructor, but I have been with him enough years doing the Intensive seminars to understand the great passion and dedication he had to helping pool players improve and bringing more qualified instructors into the industry. Tom had an exceptional ability to look at a player’s stance and figure out a more efficient way for the player to stand. He was also a marketing genius! Puns, turns of phrases, and article titles delighted me over the years. Just look at the chapters of his book “Beat People with a Stick” to get chuckle after chuckle over his use of words. I am also honored to be considered a friend of Tom’s. He was a loyal, dedicated and exceptional man that I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from over the years.

NOTE: Tom’s family has given us permission to continue publishing his articles. They wrote, “In carrying on his legend and contributions we are continuing National Billiard Academy and Tom’s business as he would desire.”

3 USEFUL SOLUTIONS

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

3 Useful Solutions (1 of 3) We are playing a game of 8-Ball and we are down to the last ball, the black 8. The side pocket is blocked by one opponent’s ball and we can’t bank the 8 because of the opponent’s Green Ball. If the Green Ball is placed in a spot which makes it possible for us to have our Cue Ball carom off the 8-Ball and swipe the Green Ball away, then try to use this simple solution: Aim the 8-Ball 3/4 to the right using a 2-tip left English at 9 o’clock on the Cue Ball and a 3-speed stroke. The 8-Ball will pick up the opposite English and start zigzagging, while the Cue Ball pushes itself and the Green Ball out of the 8-Ball’s path. Finally the 8-Ball, after hitting three rails will sink in the opposite side pocket. 3 Useful Solutions (2 of 3)

In this diagram instead, the Green Ball is placed where we can’t remove it with our Cue Ball. Try to hit the 8-Ball almost full, just a hair to the left, using a very smooth follow through and a 6 o’clock, 2.5 tips of draw and a 2-speed stroke on the Cue Ball. The Cue Ball will draw back pretty much in a straight line and the 8-Ball, after bouncing off the long rail, will likely collide with the Cue Ball approximately at point X on the table and its trajectory, with a little luck, will be diverted towards the side pocket. A not-too-easy time shot.

3 Useful Solutions (2 of 3)

X

3 Useful Solutions (3 of 3) This last solution is definitely the fanciest and most effective as the position of the blocking Green Ball does not matter much. We want to have the 8-Ball jump over the blocking ball. In order to do so, elevate your cue about 25⁰ and hit the Cue Ball half a tip above center. Use a 2-speed stroke and a little wrist action. Aim the 8-Ball as if you were banking it into the side pocket. Keep in mind that if the CB and the 8-Ball are closer than the ideal 8”-12”, you will need to elevate your cue a little more and hit the CB a tad higher. According to the position of the blocking ball, with some practice we can even try to make the 8-Ball “on the fly”!

Kick It!

Bob Jewett

October 2016

The other day at the pool hall I noticed a young player practicing kick shots. He was shooting like it was a game of 9 ball, but every shot was a kick. He seemed to be having fun and I’m sure he was learning how to use the cushions. Here is my take on how to do this practice and even play it as a game, which I’ll call Kick It. Here are the rules for the two-person game: Rack for 9 ball and do a normal break to get the game started. If you make a ball, spot it back up and continue shooting. On each subsequent shot, you must contact a cushion before you hit the lowest object ball -- hitting the lowest ball directly is a foul as is any usual foul at nine ball like not getting a cushion after ball contact. If you make a good hit and don’t foul, you get to shoot again. If you make a ball as part of a good kick, you get one point and the ball stays down. If you make a ball on a foul, it spots back up. If you foul, your opponent begins with ball in hand anywhere, but of course he has to shoot a kick shot. You can either play for cumulative points over several racks (maybe first to 20) or first to five points wins the rack. In the diagram is a typical situation right after the break. This is a fairly easy shot in that the 1 ball is directly along the path for kicking the cue ball to the side pocket A, which most players are familiar with. Shown in the diagram are some details from the standard mirror system of aiming kick shots. The black ball is the mirrored target for the 1 ball. In theory, if you shoot straight at the black target, you will hit the one ball full. The target is even with the 1 ball (north/south) and as far from the rail groove as the 1 ball is. (The rail groove is the worn line you can see on old cloth that is half a ball from the nose of the cushion.) This mirror system is used by some pros and I’ve seen them measuring out the target using theshaft of their cue stick as a ruler. The system is useful enough that I think it merits its own practice session. Make a circular ball-sized target out of paper to put on the cushion and mark the cue ball and object ball positions, and see how well the shot works for you with various speeds. The most common problem is putting unintended side spin on the cue ball which can ruin the mirror reflection. Also, faster shots will tend to go more perpendicular off the cushion (called “shorter”). Of course if the 1 ball was a little up or down the table, you would need to aim not to hit it full but to cut it a little. For example, if you’re kicking the 5 ball to pocket G, you need to hit somewhat towards the bottom of the ball as a full hit off the right side cushion will send it into the bottom rail. One of the easiest shots in this game, and a shot that is very useful otherwise, is the short kick to the 2 ball from the cue ball position shown -- hit the cushion near B to pocket the C. It turns out that the normal mirror system usually doesn’t work well for this shot because the cue ball tends to bend back towards the cushion a little when shot softly. If you made a target for the 1 ball shot, you can also use it here -- experiment to find out where it needs to be for a soft shot at the 2 ball.

As you get better at this game you will start to see position possibilities because you get to play again after a good kick. For a shot like the 3 ball from the cue ball position shown, you can do something like a short kick off of D to move the 3 ball down to E. The cue ball will still be near the 6 ball so you will have a kick off the cushion at F to make the 3 in pocket G. Or at least that’s the plan. When you make the initial short kick, you have to be careful to get a cushion. The easiest way to do that without sending the 3 ball farther than you want is to get the cue ball back to the side cushion by hitting the 3 slightly on the rail side. I hope you enjoy Kick It either as a practice or a game. If you find any problems with the rules or discover some other clever plays, please email me at jewett@sfbilliards.com and I’ll pass on your insights. For a lot more info on how to aim kick shots with video example, get Disc III in the “How to Aim Pool Shots” video series I did with Dr. Dave Alciatore. DEVELOPING A POWERFUL PRE-SHOT ROUTINE

Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his poolplaying career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

Next time you’re at a pro tournament, be sure to check out what top players do before each shot. A good pre-shot routine is an essential part of the game. It enables us to put ourselves into “Dead Stroke” on demand and focus all of our energy into the present moment. This month we will look at many steps you may want to incorporate into your pre-shot routine. 1. Free your Mind from Negative Thoughts or Expectations: Before you get down to shoot, you should exhibit a positive attitude. You’ll be free of negativity by not thinking about the score, how you are playing, how well your opponent is playing, or the soundness of your stroke mechanics. 2. Make Quality Decisions: Take your time and make sure that you pick out the right shot. Always think at least three balls ahead. You will also need to determine the correct amount of speed and spin needed to execute the shot properly. Remember to make all of your conscious decisions from a standing position with chalk in hand. 3. Align: This is the fundamental that requires the most maintenance and you need to make sure you’re perfectly aligned to the shot at hand. You should aim from a standing position then lock your eyes in on the contact point of the object ball as you settle into your stance and sweep your cue onto the shot line.

aiming checkpoint. This is where you stop your cue tip around 1/8 of an inch away from the cue ball and take one final look. You should note that it takes the human eye two to three seconds to focus on a target from a still position. Therefore, it is imperative that you come to a COMPLETE STOP to zero in on your target. You will want to note that your eyes will move back and forth, but should be focusing on the cue ball at the end of the “Set” position. During practice, you should remain completely still and say, “1…2…3…” 6. Pause: The next thing you should do is move into what many instructors refer to as “Pause.” This is where you will slowly pull back your cue and stop at the end of your backswing. When making the transition from “Set” to “Pause,” your eyes should move from the cue ball to the point of contact on the object ball. A good pause helps remove a jerky forward swing and should help you maintain accuracy. As you practice the “Pause,” you will want to pull your cue back and say “1…2...” (second stop). 7. Finish: The third part the process is commonly referred to as “Finish.” During “Finish,” you should smoothly accelerate your cue and follow through the cue ball. Always remember to keep your eyes on the object ball during this phase. 8. Freeze: The fourth and final part of the stroke is called “Freeze.” During “Freeze,” it’s important to keep your body, head, and cue still. This is the evaluative part of the process. It is here that if the shot is missed, you should try to diagnose what went wrong. As you practice “Freeze,” you should remain completely still and say “1…2…3…4…” Furthermore, most good instructors teach players that their timing in an actual game will be roughly half of the duration of what it was during practice. In other words, during a real game, your “Set” will last around 1.5 seconds, your “Pause” will be around 1 second, and your “Freeze” will last approximately two seconds. Personally, I like to emphasize “Set,” and I don’t teach my students to cut it in half. I want their eyes to have plenty of time to focus on the target.

4. Practice Strokes: Next, take several slow warm-up strokes to ensure everything is correct. This is your second aiming checkpoint to ensure accuracy. If anything does not look right at any time, you should get up and start the entire process again.

You should continually work to improve your ability to focus specifically on each step. Once you master the process, you will develop a much stronger mental game. In the words of the late Larry Liscotti, “You will make more money and less friends.”

5. Set: The first part of your “Stroke” is called “Set” and is your third

Mika Immonen th is the 76 World 14.1 Champion New York City- It seems only fitting that two adopted New Yorkers play for the World 14.1 Title on the 15th Anniversary of 9/11. Mika Immonen is from Finland, but he has resided in NYC for over 15 years. And Earl Strickland, who hails from North Carolina, has lived in New York for about five years now. In the end, it was Immonen who was able to sigh a deep breath of relief. “Between the nerves and 6 hours of play, I was shaking. I have to admit I was more of afraid of losing in the finals again then thinking of the joys of winning”, admitted Immonen. “But I now have this huge weight off my shoulders finally. I can’t believe it. I’m the World 14.1 Champion and it is just such a huge honor.” Immonen, age 43, was inducted into the BCA HOF in 2014 while Strickland, age 55, gained entry in 2006. Both players have been at the top of the pool world for so long that they have become one name icons of the sport – if you say Mika or Earl, everyone knows who you are talking about. Both players have excelled in 9-ball. Strickland has won a record five US Open 9-Ball titles and four World 9-Ball championships. Immonen has won back-to-back titles in the US Open 9-Ball and a world title in 9-Ball and 10-Ball.

scenario, from long runs to defensive battles for the table. Immonen and Strickland have been in the game for so long now that they each have developed huge and enthusiastic followings. The audience was very equal in terms of rooting for each player. THE FINALS: FIRST HALF Mika Immonen 180 - Earl Strickland 80 Immonen won the lag, Strickland broke, Immonen missed a long combo, and Strickland was off and running as he quickly cleared the first rack. But then he missed the break shot, setting in motion an uncharacteristic series of misses that would plague him throughout the first half of the match. Immonen did run the second rack, but he missed the stack on his break shot and, after a safety battle, Strickland made a few balls, then ran 31 and now led, 53-13. But he missed another break shot and Immonen ran 48 to forge ahead, 61-53. Strickland managed to run 15, but missed again. Immonen ran

Straight Pool Hall of Fame inductee Pete Margo congratulates Mika after commentating on his match. They had developed a bond after meeting earlier in the week and Margo had been texting him well wishes in his matches.

In straight pool, Immonen won the 2007 Derby City Straight Pool title. He has finished third in this event in 2006, and was second in 2009 and 2010. Strickland had never cracked the top three in this tournament until this year, but he has run over 400 balls and he definitely plays world class straight pool. While both have secured their place among the game’s all-time greats, a World title in 14.1 would look great on their resume and it would boost their credentials as an all-around superstar. The Rasson TV table has super tight side pockets but the players have adjusted to it – Strickland ran a 135 and out on the table while Immonen had two runs in the fifties and a 69 and out in his semifinal match. Today’s final match is to 300 points, so they will likely be playing at least 35-40 racks. We should therefore be treated to every kind of layout imaginable, and we should see a mix of every kind of

23 but got stuck on the stack, played an intentional foul, and now led, 83-65. Strickland managed to make only three balls before missing for the fourth time. Immonen responded with a run of 52 before his key ball skidded. Strickland ran 12, but missed. Immonen managed to run four before getting stuck on the stack on a break shot. But after he played a poor safety, Strickland missed his first shot and Immonen ran 44 balls before committing a foul – so at the break he led by a score of 180-80. THE SECOND HALF

went back to work, running 61 balls before missing a ball on a skid and scratching in the side. He caught the ball before it went it, so he lost 16 more points – 1 for the scratch, 15 for the penalty. The net result was that Immonen now led, 200-182 and was at the table with a break shot after making the final ball. Can you spell MOMENTUM CHANGE?

Earl Strickland 190 - Mika Immonen 120 The 30-minute intermission was just what the doctor ordered for Strickland as he came back with a vengeance, running 57 balls to narrow the gap – the score: 192-137. After his miss, Immonen ran 20, then made a huge error by failing to make contact with a ball near the jaws of the side pocket. So, with the score now 199-137, Strickland

Immonen ran a rack, but jawed a close to the rail break shot and Strickland ran 32 before missing. The score was now tied at 214. But Immonen then ran 38 to take a 252-214 lead, but he failed to get shape on his break shot, so a safety battle ensued. The proceeding included several intentional fouls

and three in a row by Immonen. At this point the score was 235-212. Strickland put together a run of 48 then missed, but he was now leading, 260-236. Immonen came back with a run of 21 but got stuck on the rack and a safety battle took place. After several intentional fouls and short runs the score was 285 to 260 in Immonen’s favor. Strickland ran 10 balls, but missed a break shot and Immonen struggled through the last 15 balls to win the six-hour marathon, 300-270.

KAREN CORR Makes History! On the weekend of Sept. 10-11, Karen Corr became the first female to ever win an Action Pool Tour open event. It looked as though she would fall a little short after losing the hot seat match to Brett Stottlemyer by a score of 7-5. However, Corr rebounded by defeating Kenny Miller in the semi-final to force a rematch with Stottlemyer. The final would be a single extended race to 9 in which Corr won with relative ease 9-4.

$1.2 MILLION+ AWARDED AT LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (Sept. 9, 2016) — The American Poolplayers Association (APA) sure knows how to throw a party. And the party was in full effect in early August for the recently rebranded APA World Pool Championships. Record attendance? Check. The most recognizable stars in the sport of pool? Check. Live streaming of all five event finals? Check. Epic pool party? Check – times two! Throw in more than $1.2 million in cash, front row viewing of an iconic casino implosion and 10 days of non-stop pool playing action, and it all adds up to a party unlike any other. For thousands of die-hard APA members, it was paradise. For APA’s staff and officials, it was business as usual, helping to make memories of a lifetime for their members. This year’s version of the world’s largest pool tournament saw more than 12,000 players from 48 states and three countries competing on nearly 320 tables. APA members rubbed elbows with billiard celebrities like “The Black Widow” Jeanette Lee, “The Striking Viking” Ewa Laurance, Florian “Venom” Kohler, “Dr. Cue” Tom Rossman and instructor Lee Brett. In the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 16, many of those in attendance took in the opportunity to see the Riviera Hotel & Casino come tumbling down in a rare Vegas implosion. After 23 years of hosting APA tournaments at the now extinct “Riv,” the timing couldn’t have been more appropriate. In the end though it was pool tournament action they came for, and it was pool tournament action they received.

will host RTC for next 3 years

The Women’s Professional Billiard Association (“WPBA”) is pleased to announce the signing of a 3-year deal with Zingales Billiards in Tallahassee, Florida, to host the prestigious WPBA Regional Tour Championship (“RTC”). Each year, top-ranked players from each WPBA sanctioned Regional Tour receive special invitations to compete for thousands of dollars, a WPBA Pro Tour Card, and the auspicious title of “WPBA Regional Tour Champion”. The RTC happens only once a year, showcasing the greatest, semiprofessional pool players in the U.S., aspiring to raise their game while competing on a WPBA Regional Tour. In late 2015, after an extensive vetting process, Zingales was selected to host the 2016 RTC, and following all of the positive player reviews, WPBA made the decision to bring more stability to one of its longest-running, annual events. “We’ve signed a venue that the regional tour players love, and established firm dates in order for them to plan their trips in advance, for the next three years”, says Kim Newsome, WPBA President. Michael Zingale and the entire Zingale family couldn’t be happier. “I’m excited about the 3-year deal with the WPBA. The 2016 event was great. It was the first time we worked with the WPBA, and the first time we had a full field, women’s event. The thing that stuck out the most from that event was how wonderful all the ladies were. There is always at least one issue when I have my open events with players. We didn’t have one issue and the women were so polite to our staff and very complimentary of our place. The event really went well. I can’t wait to see some of the ladies again and hopefully some new faces too. The 2017 RTC will be great and we can’t wait to watch the ladies in action. Many thanks to the WPBA for this opportunity,” says owner Michael Zingale. This year, there will be some new upgrades in store for WPBA Regional Tour

Players. New Delta-13 Elite Racks will be provided for all twenty (20) 9’ tables and some of the older tables have been improved with new anchors for rail bolts. “I always try and do a few upgrades to the room every year for the players. Upgrades are pricey, but well worth it in the long run”, says Zingale. Aside from the impeccable playing equipment, Zingales is adding an 85” and two (2) 70” TV’s for its guests. “Watching the live stream on the 85” will be awesome for spectators who can’t get a birds-eye view of the table”, says Zingale. For the next three years, the RTC will be held on January 12th-15th, 2017, January 11th-14th, 2018, and January 10th-13th, 2019, at Zingales Billiards, located at 1861 W. Tennessee St., Tallahassee, FL 32304. The annual event consists of sixty-four (64) WPBA Regional Tour invitees from across the U.S. and Canada, competing in a 4-day, round robin, double-elimination format. Spectators will enjoy watching the best semiprofessional players that women’s billiards has to offer, in person, or via the WPBA Live Stream available at www.wpba.com. The WPBA invites everyone to share in the thrill of this billiard extravaganza! The WPBA is the governing body of women’s professional billiards in the U.S., and this year, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The WPBA Regional Tour System is the grass roots system that feeds the WPBA Pro Billiards Tour. Amateur and semi-professional, female players, who aspire to play women’s professional billiards, must qualify through this elite system in order to attain the sought-after title, WPBA Exempt Professional. Exclusively, WPBA Regional Tour Players gain access to WPBA Pro Event Qualifiers and earn valuable WPBA Regional Tour Points which count toward earning invitations to the prestigious WPBA Regional Tour Championship and WPBA Pro Events.

IVO LINKIN AND LUKAS FRACASSO-VERNER Joss Junior 9-Ball Champions from: Mike Zuglan Congratulations to the winners of our first ever Joss Junior 9-Ball Championships, 12 year old Ivo Linkin in the 12 & under division, and 14 year old Lukas Fracasso-Verner in the 18 & under division. Each winner received an engraved Joss Cue and case plus trophies for the top 3 finishers in both events. Runners up were 11 year old Zach Hemendinger (2nd) and 12 year old Ralph Ramos (3rd) in the 12 & under division. And 15 year old Peter Abatangelo (2nd) and 16 year old Emily Herpel (3rd) in the 18 & under division. Let me tell you, “these kids can play”! Some of the kids were well versed in the art of tournament play and some were, more than likely, playing in their first event. It was a pleasure hosting this event and watching all of the 22 youngsters having a great time playing pool! Every player even got the opportunity

to pick at least 2 of the vast array of donated products, and in addition, we gave away 5 various cue and case combos by way of random raffl es. The events were double elimination races to 7 on the 7 foot Diamond tables for the 12 and under and races to 9 on the 9 foot Diamonds for the 18 and under. Zach Hemendinger defeated Ivo Linkin 7-6 for the hot seat. Ivo then defeated Ralph Ramos 7-3 to get to the finals and avenged his previous loss by wining 2 sets 7-4 and 7-3 for the win. Over on the 9 footers it was Lukas Fracasso-Verner who went undefeated for his title besting Emily Herpel 9-4 for the hot seat. Emily then fell victim to Peter Abatangelo who then lost in the final match 9-4 to Fracasso-Verner. Hopefully it was a great time and learning experience for all of the participants in both events.
