Tiger SMART gathered for the 2nd Annual Georgia State 9-Ball Championship at Rack & Grill II in Augusta, GA, September 16, 2017. Rack & Grill hosts two events a year and is also home to the very popular Monthly Tournament the first full weekend on each month. Chris Kuneman, owner, is always a fantastic host and Tiger SMART is so happy to have cultivated the relationship.

Tiffany Stidham 7-4 over Lisa Cossette setting up the semi-final match between Stidham and Rice. Showing some signs of fatigue, Stidham was bested by Rice 7-2. The one set final was very well played. Ashley Rice won the South Carolina Championship earlier in the year, showing she’s got game. Calhoun took the match and the title 9-5. Congratulations to all the ladies who displayed their talents, professionalism, and dedication to our sport. Format was double elimination, one race to nine in the final. The event was full of exciting matches including: a hill-hill victory for Debbie Teichert over Marianne Merrill; Tiffany Stidham over Christy Miller 7-5; Tiffany Stidham over Palma “Rose” Kogan 7-5; and Lisa Cossette over Erica He 7-5. There were also some onesided matches including Ashley Rice over Audra Mozee 7-1; Belinda Calhoun over Palma “Rose” Kogan 7-1; and Marianne Merrill over Erica He 7-1. 1st $225 Belinda Calhoun 2nd $150 Ashley Rice Winner’s bracket final was won by 3rd $75 Tiffany Stidham Calhoun 7-4 over Ashley

MORRA takes 44th Texas Open If it’s Labor Day weekend August 31-September4, 2017, players from all over the country converge on Skinny Bob’s in Round Rock, TX for the annual Texas Open. The event kicked off with a player’s auction. Five pool tournaments took place during the course of the five days, not including the minitournaments. Banks Ring Game (30 players Open division/12 players Women’s Division). After a long night, it came down to two players – Sky Woodward and David Henson. The young gun and the Texas legend decided to whack it up and call it a night, splitting $1995. Congratulations to both! Open Division (128 players); $125 entry; $8000 added; Mosconi Cup Qualifier. Although John Morra was striving to repeat as champion, the strong competition wasn’t going to make it easy. Devin Poteet earned the hot seat by spiritly winning the hill-hill match against John Morra. After winning against James Davis, John came back to a rematch with Devin for the finals. John doubledipped Devin to win his second consecutive championship title. The main event drew a full field of 128 players. Young stars of the game like John Morra, Sky Woodward, Justin Bergman, Shane McMinn, Devin Poteet and Benny Conway Jr. went up against some great Texas talent like former US Open champ Jeremy Jones, Alex Calderon, James Davis Sr., James Davis Jr., Erman Bullard, Al Mason, David Henson, Barry Emerson, Charlie Bryant, Manny Chau and Ernesto Bayaua. There were plenty of intense matches over the next few days and by Sunday night, it had come down to 32 players – 8 on the winner’s side and 24 on the loser’s side.

After playing all day, the winner’s side came down to Ryan Lane duking it out with Devin Poteet in the upper half of the bracket and James Davis Sr. against John Morra in the lower half. Devin moved into the hot seat match 9-7 and John claimed a spot also – 9-6. Having come out of a self-imposed retirement a short time ago, Morra – or as his fans know him, “Mr. Smooth,” – had his hands full with young Devin Poteet – a man looking to make a statement. The match was a tight one and when the smoke cleared, it was a jubilant Devin that eked out the win – 9-8! Meanwhile, Jeremy Jones was battling the still-tough James Davis Sr. Strop took it down leaving JJ with a fourth-place finish. Moving on to face a determined John for a shot in the finals, James didn’t have much of a chance – he lost 9-1 and settled for third place. Since this event was true double elimination, John would have to defeat Devin twice to take the title. Ball after ball, game after game, John marched to a 9-3 victory in the first set. The final set was all John. Fans were treated to a world class exhibition of his pocketing skills and pinpoint position play – smooth as silk. Devin could only watch as his hopes for his first major title slipped away – 9-2. John was a gracious winner and Devin accepted his defeat with class. Congratulations to both men for a great tournament!

Brian Fose Benefit Bison Billiards in Williamsville, NY held a benefit for Brian Fose that raised almost $3000 for his fight against heart disease on September 16, 2017. 36 players competed for $3120 in prize money in this 8-Ball tournament. Throughout the day, 50 baskets were raffled off. There was also a very nice 50/50 drawing as well as outright donations. What a great turnout and what a tribute to our pool players for their generous support of our friend Brian. A special thanks to Cheryl Wright and her team, Dave, Dan, Darryl, Vicki, and especially my wife Lynn, who work for 2 days preparing all the food. I’m sure I missed someone, but thank you all. “Choking” is when you know how to do something and have successfully have done it before, yet in pressure situations you fail because of a lack of focus and execution. In the game of pool choking is a common occurrence, especially during tournaments when it seems as though the table gets longer and the pockets become smaller. This month I would like to share with you why choking occurs, and what you can do to minimize choking the next time you play when the stakes are high! Choking always begins with fear. Interestingly, for human beings fear can be real (i.e. somebody shooting a gun at you), or irrational (worrying about what somebody might think if I miss this next shot). Regardless of the source (real or irrational), our bodies respond with anxiety in the same exact way. In other words, your body doesn’t care if it hears gun shots or is afraid of your opponent standing over the pool table – the physical anxiety (i.e. increased heart rate; tense, tight muscles; and shallow breathing are examples) will be experienced the same exact way!

Once fear kicks into negative anxiety, your mind will begin to exclusively focus on the physical symptoms of nerves (the shallow breathing, increased heart rate, etc) instead of thinking about the shot you need to make on the table in front of you! From there, most players will start talking to themselves and say things like “don’t screw up,” or “don’t miss this next shot.” Guess what happens next? You got it – the shot is missed! Once your self-talk becomes negative and conservative, you are basically done (Don’t believe me? Try NOT thinking of as pink elephant and see what happens. Now go tell yourself NOT to miss

the next shot and see what happens). Once the shot is missed, the player usually experiences more negative energy, more fear, more anxiety, and in some cases the day may end up being lost completely. It’s amazing all this starts from fear – and irrational fear at that! Think about it – there is no real fear when playing pool, yet how many thousands and thousands of players allow their minds and bodies to experience fear as though they were in fear for their life?! Seriously, who cares about who you are playing or how many people are watching – they cant take the stick out of your hands and make you miss shots! If you want to minimize choking, try the following tips: • When you start getting nervous while playing, where is the fear coming from? Are you worried what somebody will think if you miss? Are you concerned who is watching you shoot? If you are feeling any of these kinds of things STOP immediately, stand up, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself you are experiencing irrational fear! • Breathing through your stomach is the best way to immediately calm your body down. Try taking 2-3 deep belly breaths and watch how your body responds – its pretty amazing. • Self-talk (what you say to yourself) is also a great way to refocus and remain calm in tough situations. Tell yourself words like “focus” or “stay cool” and your mind and body will respond accordingly. • Once you conquer fear, confidence will take over – leading you to synchrony between your mind and body, experiencing “the zone” more frequently, and positive self-talk (and more wins, too!).

Back in the early 60’s, when I began playing pool, there wasn’t much help available. Mosconi had a little book out, and that was about it. Just like today, there were lots of great players around, but the unspoken attitude of that time was, “I ain’t tellin’ nobody nuthin’.” Many players felt that if they taught you their “secrets” you’d use that knowledge to take their money. Others felt that, since they had to work hard and had to make all the mistakes, if you didn’t earn your knowledge, you didn’t deserve it. You were supposed to learn by losing money to better players. Sharks and fish. Predator and prey. I’m happy to announce that those days are mostly gone. Today, we have good instructional books and videos, training and practice aids, and instructors and schools. Of course, they’re not all good. Like everything, some are good, some are extraordinary, and some are just plain wrong. But it’s possible now to get great help. Some players are blessed with terrific natural ability. They got good very quickly, and never understood what the problem with everyone else was. They saw angles; they saw ball paths; they clearly remembered shots they had seen before. They could take you through a shot by shot replay of a match they played two years ago. Not everyone is wired up this way. Sure, these players still had to go on and do the work—sink those million balls—to really pull themselves up to their personal potential. There is no escaping doing the work. Nobody just walks up and plays great from day one. But somehow, it came easier for them. This is the story of most pros. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of us it’s not that natural. It doesn’t come that easily. It’s not that obvious to us. We’re not full-time players, and we’re frustrated because, lately, we’re not getting better. We need an edge. The edge is available in several dimensions: superior fundamentals, clearer, better knowledge, more effective practice, engaged exposure to higher level play. We have only so much time and energy to devote to pool, and if we really want to get better, we’d better plan on devoting some of that time and energy to things that will improve our game. So what can we do? Read and watch good material. Be very picky about what you choose to believe from the materials you read and videos you watch.

Great players are not necessarily great teachers. In fact, many great players have beliefs about what they’re doing that are completely wrong from a physics perspective. They can get whatever results they want on the table, but their belief about how they are doing it may not be true. Place your faith in the science types for why things work the way they do, and in the great players for how to play smart and how to win. But be skeptical. Practice the right things in the right way. Set aside small amounts of time to work on the worst parts of your game, and do it with all the focus you can bring to bear. Start with an easy version of what you’re working on and gradually make it more challenging, as you improve. Don’t practice failure. Make good use of training aids. Seeing yourself on video is usually a very surprising experience. Most players immediately see things that could be improved. Try working with a practice cue ball, and try to believe what it shows you. Work through drills that look promising. Find a good instructor. There is no substitute for hands-on help and guidance. Ask around. Instructors with advanced certifications usually have a lot of teaching experience, and they would not have gotten all that experience if they weren’t helping players get better. Good instructors have curriculums that take you through a planned series of learning and practicing in an organized way. If someone just wants to watch you hit some balls and then show you how they would have done it, you’re probably in the wrong place. Ask some questions and see whether their answers make sense to you. If you find a good instructor, it will be the best money you’ll ever spend on your game. Spending $600 on yet another new cue is not going to raise your game. Spending $600 on serious, proven instruction will make more difference than you can imagine—for the rest of your pool life! Engage your brain. Actively try to predict and understand what happens at the table. Watch the best players you can find. Think about why they make the choices they make, and how and why their shot-to- shot results are what they are. There is way more to this game than people think. You don’t know what you don’t know—and there’s a lot of it. We need every edge we can get. Make your learning time and your practice time count. The gains will eventually show up in your game.

THE PASSING CAROM SHOT STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

This month’s shot is another very useful one to know as the principle it is based on may help you win any pool game. Let’s suppose we have the 9-ball hanging in front of side pocket B. Our CB is by pocket D, at about one ball distance from the long rail and half ball from the pocket’s right point (the blue-dotted line). The lowest numbered Object Ball (the Red ball in the diagram) is situated in front of the CB, at about one ball + 1” from the long rail at the first diamond. We could try to slice the OB to the right and shoot a combo on the 9-Ball, but I can guarantee you that it would be easier and would give us a better chance of success to slice the OB to the left but, at the same time, use a lot of draw on the CB: use a smooth follow through, a 6-o’clock, 2.5 tips of English and a 2-speed stroke. The CB, after cutting the OB thin, will hit the rail and curve as a result of the backward spin. It will then proceed towards the 9-Ball and precede the OB, likely pocketing the 9-Ball before the latter can interfere with the shot. Nine ball is sometimes criticized for being nothing but a “connect the dots” exercise, but many common situations require good pattern work and reward precise position play. Let’s find some easiest ways to run out. In the diagram your opponent has just scratched on the break so you have ball in hand. What is your first concern? Try to work through the rack before reading on and then see if our analyses match up. The first two balls are obvious. The 1 ball can go to A, B or C with a stop shot and you will have an easy shot on the 2 ball. This is your first chance to go wrong, or thinking more positively, make the run easy. The transition from the 3 to the 4 is not automatic. If you don’t move far enough from the 2 and leave yourself a cut to the right on the 3 ball, you need a hero shot to get on the 4 ball. If you go to far and leave a big cut to the left on the 3, it will be hard to hold the cue ball for the 4. This means that you should really work for ideal position on the 2 ball, not just an easy shot. The arrows show about the optimum angle for the 2 shot to move over to the three with a confidentspeed stun shot with a little draw. What’s the best way to get to that line? Make a choice before reading on. Playing the 1 ball to either pocket A or B is not unreasonable. A requires a few inches of controlled draw, while going to B is more or less the same stun shot you plan to play on the 2 ball. How about the follow shot to pocket C instead? Follow shots generally allow the best control of position, and if you choose the right cut angle for the 1 ball -- very slightly to the right -- you will have good shape on the 2 for a wide range of speeds. The shot to B would be my second choice because when the cue ball hits the 1 ball, it is already nearly on the desired position line. The shot to A has a problem with the stretch if you try to draw straight back and if you over draw it a little, you’ll be on the wrong side of the 2 and looking at long position or a long shot. What angle do you want on the 4 from the 3 ball? If your plan is to go to X to play the 5 in the corner, a 30-degree cut is about what you need. That would be roughly on a line from the 2. With a nearly full shot on the 3 just stun over to that line being careful to get past the 6. If you end up with more angle on the 3 to the point where trying to kill the cue ball is risky, go to the cushion and come out. If you make a mistake on the 3 and leave yourself straight on the 4, the bank on the 5 is as easy as banks get and position on the 6 is automatic. If you do get to the 6 the main thing to remember is to leave yourself enough angle on the 7 to get up the table for the 8. The most common mistake is to get nearly straight and the best way to recover is

usually to play the 8 to pocket A. Here is some additional analysis you can do on this diagram to get you thinking about patterns at nine ball. If you can remove all but one ball before the 9 ball before taking ball in hand, which one ball do you leave up? I hope you said the 7 ball. You can continue this line of thought for 2, 3, 4... balls. Which three balls (in order) do you like? 2-4-7 should be automatic and about the same as 3-4-7, but 1-2-8 is not bad. Remember that all the other balls are off the table. When you are in a match, you can do a similar analysis while your opponent is shooting. How should he run the balls? Where does he have to play precise position? Thinking while sitting lets you get in more practice.

If you’ve had butterflies while shooting the 9-ball, you’ve experienced performance anxiety! If you’ve had trouble going to sleep before an important match, you understand how it can control you. If you’ve ever started panicking during your warm-up strokes because you are afraid you will miss, you understand how it can seriously effect your match play. If you’ve ever rattled the 9-ball you’ve felt it’s daunting effects. But what exactly is performance anxiety and why does it exist? This article is going to take a look into the origin of anxiety, what the effects are, and how you can harness it’s energy it to help you play your best pool. What is anxiety? Generally speaking, anxiety is a reaction to some sort of stressor. If you don’t know the mental game techniques to control it, that emotional response can quickly cause: your heart to race, a loss of focus, fast breathing, tension in the muscles and sweating. As humans, we’ve developed responses to anxiety that have become engrained in us for over a million years. We evolved to to protect ourselves when something is threatening our lives. But, for some bizarre reason, that same response can be triggered today in a game of pool and can be quite challenging to deal with. And for most of us, it creates an even bigger challenge in a game that is already extremely difficult! What do you fear most in pool? It’s probably at least one of the following: • Losing to a weaker player (you’ve invested a lot of time into your practice, so you want to win when you should). • How others preceive your performance – (i.e. you have a big ego ) • Fear of failure (failing to meet your goals) • Fear of winning (self-sabotage puts you back in your comfort zone) What does anxiety do to you? • Anxiety can cause your hands to shake • Your game speeds up and so does your pre-shot routine • You make quick deceisive decisions instead of weighing all of your options carefully (shot selection) • You put the “death grip” on your cue The positive side of anxiety It turns out that there’s a “healthy side” to anxiety, one that drives us to win and become better players. A top pool player’s fear of failure is probably quite different than that of an amateur. Fear of failure to professional players doesn’t represent a loss

of respect from their peers or what people will think of them. This anxiety is a healthy fear. It motivates them. If anxiety is controlled using proper stress management techniques, it can become a very powerful driver to success. Professional pool players want to win. They want to win major championships and see their names and photos in major publications. This is not because they derive their self-esteem from it, but because they are competitors and love the thrill of competition. If you can direct the physiological changes that occur during stress in a positive way, you will gain the ingredients for an extraordinary performance. Your perspective of the “stress” is that it’s a positive challenge, not a negative threat. Your senses are heightened and can be used to take your performance to an even higher level. For the world’s best players, pre-competition anxiety is almost a necessity for them to play their best game. Gaining control of your fears (getting to the root of the problem) To get control of your anxiety, you need to ask yourself some key questions: What do you fear? Why do you fear it? Most of us don’t really know why we are nervous. What is it you want out of pool? What motivates you to succeed? Do you gain your satisfaction from what other people think of you as a player? Is your success tied to your self-esteem, your status in the game and impressing others? If so, this is an unhealthy fear and you’re too emotionally involved in the game to reach your full potential. Ways to conquer performance anxiety in pool • What is the worst case scenario? There are far worse things that could happen to you in life than not playing well. • Look at failure as an opportunity to grow. • Figure out the unknowns, so there is less to fear. • Accept that it’s natural to feel anxious – it’s part of getting better. • Visualization – Imagine yourself in the situations you fear and visualize yourself succeeding. • Set short term goals and work on achieving them. Small incremental achievements might help you improve without creating too much pressure. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” No truer words were ever spoken. His advice can help you in difficult times. Learning to experience your primary emotions without resistance can help you weather all sorts of emotional storms that can occur during match play. The key is welcome anxiety into your game and use all of that added energy to your advantage.

FINALS - Shane Van Boening 13 - Jayson Shaw 4 After some back and forth, Van Boening sliced a ball in the side and ran out to take the first game. In game 2 it looked like Van Boening had an easy run, but he hooked himself, sold out, and Shaw ran out. Van Boening then scratched in game 3 and Shaw executed a 7 ball run to take a 2-1 lead. Shaw then missed a long shot and Van Boening purposefully passed on a cut and played a long rail bank and went on to run out. Scored tied at 2-2. Van Boening then scratched on the break and Shaw ran 8 and out. Then Shaw scratched on his break and Van Boening ran 8 and out – so the score was tied at 3-3. Van Boening played a safe after his break, then got a shot, and ran out. In game 7 Shaw took a flyer, sold out, and Van Boening ran out to take a 5-3 lead. He then broke and ran out 4 times in succession to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Then he made the 9-ball on the break! Van Boening’s streak ended when he scratched on the break, and Shaw ran 8 and out, but still trailed, 10-4. When Shaw scratched on his break, Van Boening ran out to pull within two of the finish line.

In game 16 Shaw jacked up and missed a draw shot, and Van Boening ran 7 and out to reach the hill with a lead of 12 games to 4. The Lion Roars It was pool heaven the last few days, September 20-24, 2017, at Dave Cole’s Carom Room in Beloit, WI. This year’s Fall Classic had three events - a sixteen player one pocket tournament, a sixteen player Saturday Night 10 Ball and the main event – the Fall Classic 10 Ball Championship. No jump cues were allowed in any of the three events. As usual, Dave Coles and his staff went out of their way to provide a first-class event for the players and fans. Play started in the 10-Ball Main Event on Friday, September 22. A full field of 96 players put up their $150 entry fees in the main event. It was bar box 10-Ball, race to 9 with alternate breaks. The tournament chart was filled with names that any pool aficionado would recognize. First round action saw red hot John Morra defeating Chip Compton and Charlie Bryant over Shane McMinn with 25% of the field receiving first rounds byes. Second round saw it tightening up a bit with Skyler Woodward taking down fellow young gun Tyler Styer, Joey Gray over Brian Groce, Jeremy Jones over foreign phenom Can Salim and Jason Klatt sending Houston Open runner-up Devin Poteet west. Notable matches in the third round had Jones beating Klatt and saw two Wisconsin straight shooting legends battle it out - Jeff Carter took down Jayme Goodwin in a close match. The fourth round pitted Jayson Shaw over Jeff Carter with Shaw prevailing. Sharik Sayed sent Morra to the one loss side while Justin Bergman did the same to Alex Olinger. It wasn’t getting any easier in the fifth round. Jones and Bergman duked it

out with Bergman taking the win. Other matches included Tony Chohan over Chad Elston, Shaw defeating Sayed and Jesse Bowman taking care of Alex Pagulayan. It was now down to the final twelve players with Shaw vs. Bowman and Chohan vs. Bergman being the final four on the winners’ side. Jayson motored out to a 6-2 lead until Bowman found his gear and took it down 9-7. Tony then defeated Justin 9-6 in the other quarter-final match. This set up the hot seat match with Tony defeating Jesse 9-5 and arriving undefeated to the hot seat. Jesse moved west to see who emerged from the pack for the semi-final. In the end, it came down to Alex and Jayson being the two remaining players on the one loss side of the chart. Alex was taking no prisoners as he knocked Jayson out of the running with a 9-5 score. This left Jayson with a well-deserved fourth place finish. The match for the other finals spot was a barnburner! Both Jesse and Alex wanted it badly and it finally climaxed at an 8-8 score. Alex secured the win leaving a very disappointed Jesse having to settle for a hard fought third place. Since this event was true double elimination, defending champion Alex would have to defeat Tony twice to claim the title. While both players made very few errors, Alex won the first set 9-5 forcing a second set. A determined Tony Chohan notched game after game and by what appeared to be the end of the match, led by a score of 8-3. Finally leaving his opponent a little daylight, Alex began grinding it out. Slowly and methodically, he tied it up at 8-8! One game for it all and it was Tony’s break! He smashed the balls but came up empty and the Lion roared to claim the title! What a finish!!! Tony played a great event while a determined Alex showed once again why he is a future Hall of Famer! Good tournament, Tony! And, congratulations to Alex for defending his Carom Room Fall Classic title!

Jones One Pocket Champion The one pocket event was filled with top notch talent and sponsored by Durbin Custom Cues, Kamui, Simonis and Aramith. It had a $500 entry fee and was single elimination - race to five. Getting underway on Wednesday, September 20, the first-round surprises included a couple of 5-0 thrashings – Jayson Shaw over Joey Gray and Tony Chohan over Skyler Woodward. Second round saw Chip Compton and Jayson Shaw advance to a chance for a finals slot as well as Larry Nevel and Jeremy Jones. Jayson defeated Chip 5-3 to lock up his seat in the finals and Jeremy defeated Larry in a 5-4 nailbiter to capture the other berth. The final was all Jeremy as he took it down with a score of 5-2 over Jayson. Congratulations to JJ for a great finish!!! Good tournament, Jayson! And, thanks again to our sponsors!

Saturday night, September 23, while the main event was in progress, saw sixteen players vying for the cheese in a $500 entry, race to seven, winner break bar box 10-Ball event. When the smoke cleared, there were two players remaining – Sky Woodward and Justin Bergman. Fans anticipated a real showdown between the two young guns. However, showing why he is widely considered to be the best bar box player in the country, Sky never gave Justin any air and cruised to a 7-0 victory. Congratulations to Sky for a well-played event! Good job, Justin!
