For example, if you tell yourself that you really can be the best player in the room your entire body will work in better synchrony, allowing you to casually walk in, warm up, and play your game. On the other hand, if you don’t feel like you have much game, your body will respond by being tight, and you might even give away your nervousness with shaky hands and twitchy body movements that are driven by anxiety. The way your body responds, however, is largely up to the way in which you program it (believe you can or you can’t, but the choice is up to you). When I suggest to “walk the walk,” it really means for you to think through how you want to be perceived by the competition. When you appear to be confident, it often has the exact effect
on the competition – meaning your confidence will likely strike anxiety and fear into their game. In order for you to enter the room at your peak state, consider the following tips: •

Review your goals. Before you go to the pool room take a moment to read through your personal goals (yes, you should set some!), and try to focus on the things you want to achieve today. Be realistic. While you always want to strive to be the best, it is important to play within yourself and focus on the things that are more realistic to happen today. For one player that might be running a single rack, while another player may have realistic expectations of running through a tournament. One game at a time. Yes, this sounds cliché, but how many times have you allowed your thoughts to jump too far ahead and ended up missing an easy shot as a result? Believe it or not, staying in the moment and only focusing on the next shot is a very challenging skill for players to develop – but one very worthwhile to learn. Stick with routines. Your pre-game routine is vitally important toward your success! Learn about the significance of deep breathing, imagery, and positive selftalk to name a few, and develop your own re-game routine that allows you to play with comfort and confidence. Take a timeout. Sometimes when we feel the wheels falling off we simply keep playing, missing shot after shot and only becoming angrier with ourselves after every miss. Why do we do this when we play a game that allows for brief timeouts to re-gather our thoughts?? Sometimes it’s best to step back, breathe, and re-think the table so that you can regain your confidence and composure and still save the rack (and maybe the tournament).

Most of us don’t have the raw natural talent to become great players without working at it. If you’re good, you practice. If you want to be good, you practice. You won’t be getting better if you’re not practicing. And meanwhile, somebody else, who may beat you in the future, is putting in that practice time.
object ball is hanging in the corner pocket, drawing more accurately, remembering to plan at least three balls ahead, checking where your tip is actually hitting the cueball (vs. what you believe), experimenting with controlling sidespin, jumping, curving, rail shots, kicks, banks, etc. There is enough to keep you engaged for a lifetime.
If you actually want to get better, you’ll make time for practice. 15 minutes of concentrated practice will do more for your game than hours of play.
So, there’s banging balls around the table, and then there’s practice. BCA Master Instructor Jerry Briesath says “Perfect practice makes perfect.” He means you get better not just because you practice, but because you practice the right things, in an effective way. I say “Practice makes permanent.” You have to “burn in” your improvements, or they will fade away.
“OK. I practice. I drill a few straight-ins, shoot a coupla spot shots, try a cross-side bank, and I’m ready to play,” you might say. I’d say this is all useful, but it’s not practice. It’s checking out the equipment and your stroke. Many players practice by throwing a few balls on the table and trying to run them out. Other times, they shoot low percentage shots. This is fun stuff. When you succeed, you look good and feel good. When you fail, well, it was a low percentage shot, what the hey? This type of practice is getting you nowhere. If you only practice what you’re already good at, you’ll look great, but your game will not improve. Practicing what’s easy is too easy. On the other hand, don’t spend your practice time on extremely difficult shots. You’re going to miss them and not know why. You won’t get better, and with all that missing, you won’t be building your confidence. Practicing failure is not a good idea. What types of things should you practice? Practice the things you do worst. This is obvious, but how many players actually do this? How else are you going to get better at them? Improving your worst things will raise your entire game. How about practicing that shot that cost you the match, that angle you always see wrong, shooting softly, shooting hard, getting position when the

Often, the most effective way to practice is what’s called “progressive practice.” Billiard Digest columnist Bob Jewett promotes this method, and I’ve seen it yield wonderful results. Here’s how it works. Pick a shot or skill to work with. Let’s say it’s medium speed spot shots. The usual practice method – setting it up and having a whack at it 5 or 10 times – is not going to help much if you’re only making it 1 time out of 5. The trick to progressive practice is to start with the easiest possible version of the shot, instead of starting where you’re already having trouble. So, for our spot shot example, spot the object ball, and then move the cueball forward along the line to the object ball until it’s only a diamond or so away. Shoot the shot. If you make it, move the cueball back a diamond or a half diamond for the next try (making it progressively harder). Shoot 15 or 20 times. If you miss, move forward to the next easiest shot position. When you make it, make the next one a little tougher. This type of practice quickly shows you where your trouble begins, and keeps you working right near the edge of your current ability. Try it. Make progress.

PIN BALL POOL Here is one of my creations from a long time ago. Since there is a lot of action and ricocheting going on, this shot reminds me of a pin ball machine. It is not an easy shot but it should definitely be made within 5 tries. All four object balls must be pocketed.

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
Let’s start by setting up the first couple of object balls, the Black and the Brown one. The Black ball needs to be situated at one-ball + 2mm distance from the long rail, at the first diamond from pocket C. The Brown ball must be frozen to the Black ball at one-ball distance from the rail. As a result, their line of centers aims at the right point of pocket A, as shown in the diagram by the dotted brown line. Add the Red ball hanging by pocket C and the Blue ball by pocket D. Then place the Cue Ball at about 1.5 diamond distance from the Black ball and in a straight line with it. In this shot it is particularly important for all the balls to be very clean.

Let’s aim the left half of the Black ball and use a 4 o’clock, 1 tip of English, 2.5-speed stroke on the CB. By doing so, provided, as I said, the balls are fairly clean and therefore there is not much friction between them, the Brown ball should sink into pocket A, while the CB hits the long rail, bounces off of it, makes the Red ball F and travels towards the Blue ball to pocket it as well. In the meantime, the Black ball hits both long rails to end into pocket C, while avoiding colliding with the CB.

The only adjustment that may be necessary, in case the Brown ball hits the long rail and does not sink into pocket A, will be to place the Black ball closer to the long rail, using for both the Brown and the Black ball the same one-ball distance from it, in order to compensate for the excessive throw.

I recently took a lesson from the former European Champion Alex Lely. One of the drills he had the students do was a series of kiss shots. For some of them I was surprised by how easy they were if the balls were sitting right. I don’t propose that you make this drill a weekly practice but if you spend 15 minutes with it two or three times, I think your percentages will go way up and you will start seeing more kiss shots in games. The point is to get some feel for kiss shots before you have to play one in a match.

This kind of shot is very useful on a crowded table such as eight ball right after the break. Another good place to use it is when the ball you are kissing off of, such as the 4 in Shot 1 is part of a cluster. That kind of break-out is often overlooked. In Shot 1, put the 4 ball about a diamond out from the side. From where it is sitting, the 1 ball needs to hit the 4 nearly full to get the kiss angle into the pocket. Try it several times and move the 1 ball towards the 2 if you need to. You will have to shoot firmly to hard to keep the 1 ball from acquiring follow on the way to the 4 ball.

Next in Shot 1, try playing the 2 ball off the 4. You have cue ball in hand for the shot. With this intermediate angle, you can let the 2 ball roll into the 4 at much slower speed and that is the best way to play the shot. Have the 2 ball hit about half the 4. Finally, play the 3 off the 4 with a pretty thin hit. I think you will find this angle really tough. Shot 2 is similar, but the balls are farther from the side pocket. With the kiss ball (4) in the middle of the table, is any angle odds-on to go? After you have some experience with them, try each shot 5 times and note your success rate. Shot 3 is a less structured practice I like to play. With balls in random positions and cue ball in hand, find and play a kiss shot. Which shots do you see at that end of the table? The 5 off the 7 is similar to the 1 ball in the first set of shots. With the greater distance to the 7, you have to be more careful not to let the 5 ball acquire much forward roll before contact. The 5 off the 8 is similar but even a little harder. Shots like this are a lot easier if the cue ball is in hand or just happens to be in the ideal spot. Do you see any shot at all with the 2 ball? The kiss off the 5 with a softly rolling ball is nearly a

natural. I think off the 7 is impossible since it is about 90 degrees. Kissing off a ball to a side pocket or the other end of the table looks unlikely. The 6 ball has three easy shots. You can slow roll it off the 7, 2 or 8. This kind of slow roller with about a half-ball hit comes up all the time in the rack area and you have to be ready to see them. The main things to note when you are practicing kiss shots is which angles are total naturals for a slow roller, which require more care aiming, such as the very thin hits, and which require high speed to preserve the ideal kiss angle.

The guys over at Accu-Stats, have a huge amount of data from hundreds of thousands of games that were played in the 1980s. As of late 1987, top professional players operated with a Total Performance Average of .811 (meaning the were successful with whatever they attempted to do during a game around 81% of the time). They successfully kicked balls 79% of the time. They ran-out 56% of the time, and they pocketed roughly 90% of the shots they decided to shoot. Professionals also pocketed a ball on the break 51% of the time and got position on their next shot 93% of the time. Most amateurs could easily narrow the gap between themselves and professionals by: • Increasing their overall knowledge of the game. • Implementing better patterns when choosing to run-out • Knowing when and how to play safe • Developing a consistent pre-shot routine • Practicing their kick shots TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME What are the more important technical aspects of the game? To increase your overall performance, you’ll need to become proficient in the following areas: 1. STROKE If you’re not making consistent contact with the spot on the cue ball you intend to strike, your fighting an uphill battle. In studies that have been done on the subject most amateur players do not hit the cue ball exactly where they intend to contact it. Most amateurs need to put their stroke in a groove. You can do this simply by getting a coke bottle and stroking your tip and ferrule in and out of the bottle repeatedly. If you can do this regularly without touching the side of the bottle you have developed a fairly accurate stroke. 2. AIM Being able to aim is just as important as striking the cue ball where you intended to hit it. If you can’t pick out the spot on the object ball that needs to be struck then you are going to have some serious work to do. Pick out an effective aiming system and learn it well. It will pay dividends quickly. 3. SPEED CONTROL Speed control is just as important as your stoke and aim. Without it you

IMPORTANT MENTAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME 1. POOL KNOWLEDGE When I give lessons to professionals, I have noticed over the years that their shot selection is always good. Most amateurs however, need a lot of work on their “KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME” that is, picking the right shot to shoot. Most amateurs play the wrong patterns and tend to play safe at inopportune times. They are also ineffective kickers. Being able to choose the right shot doesn’t require any skill development, it’s just about gaining knowledge. You can gain that knowledge from watching lots of professional pool matches. 2. PROCESS What is that you need to focus on during your “preshot routine” to maximize your chances of success? Professional players won’t attempt a shot unless they are 100% committed to it. I can guarantee that! The first thing to do is look at your current angle and determine the speed and spin the shot needs to be hit with to get to the desired position area. From there it’s all about subconscious delivery. Implementing an effective pre-shot routine will also help you keep negative thoughts from entering your mind. 3. Lee Van Corteza Makes History 1st Asian World 14.1 Champion

The historic finals proved that a lot was at stake with either Thorsten Hohmann getting within 2 wins of tying Mosconi’s 7 All Time World 14.1 wins or Lee Van Corteza becoming the first Asian World 14.1 Champion ever. Philippines’ Lee Van Corteza did what no other Asian before him could do, win the World 14.1. The slim, smooth playing Filipino became the Bottledeck.net 77th World 14.1 Champion, and doing so in fashion by defeating none other than

pool player on the planet as he ran 112 and out to advance to his 6th World 14.1 semi-finals.
The week-long event was challenging with Corteza playing a total of 13 matches and pocketing almost 2000 balls. Hohmann had pocketed over 1700 shots. The World 14.1 title is perhaps the most hard-earned title in billiards with no luck or short cuts in winning games. Day 6, which took place the day before the finals, saw the quarter-finalists duel it out for a place in the semi’s. Top American 14.1 specialist Danny Harriman had defeated 2012 World 14.1 Champion John Schmidt in the final 12, but fell 200-111 to the powerful Darren Appleton of the UK. Newcomer Del Sim of Scotland had his dream run through the field finally ended by a fellow Scotsman Jonni Fulcher 200-105. USA’s hopeful Max Eberle of Las Vegas was 8-0 undefeated until he ran into the buzzsaw in Lee Van Corteza, 200-44, where he had very few opportunities.

The most thrilling match of the day was reigning champion Mika Immonen of Finland versus Thorsten Hohmann. Leading 184-88, Immonen went for an aggressive bank and then played a mediocre safe. The minute error seemed innocent to an ordinary 14.1 pro, but Hohmann proved why he is the greatest straight

The semi-finals first pitted Appleton versus Hohmann, which would be the third time the two champions faced each other in the World 14.1. In the match, neither could get things going but it was Appleton who made the most errors, opening up Hohmann for the win and making him 3-0 versus Appleton in World 14.1 competition.
“I haven’t played in three months, so I wasn’t really expecting a big result. That’s why I continued my high run the other day after the match. To shake off the rust”, said Appleton. He

In the finals, this was the third time in history that Asia versus Europe faced each other. Previously, Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes of the Philippines came short against their western opponents for the World 14.1 title. Lee Van intended to change that and in his first try no less, as this was his first appearance at the World 14.1. The final was a race to 300 points with a 30-minute intermission at 150 points. Hohmann was the dominant player in the first half of the match and held a sizable lead after his 83-ball run. He stood at 146-78 lead over Corteza. But by the second half of the match, Corteza came back with his own 60 ball run. Helped by uncharacteristic misses by Hohmann on routine shots, Corteza kept extending his lead. Hohmann returned to the table 2 more times but could not put together any significant runs, and at 217-183, he relinquished the table the final time with Corteza running 83 and out for the championship win. Ironically, equaling Hohmann’s high run of the match.
“Of course, I would have loved to win another World 14.1, but Lee Van played great. He deserves the win” said Hohmann. “I just tried to stay focused. Straight pool takes a lot of concentration. I’m happy to be the first Asian to win the World 14.1” said Lee Van. Corteza also held the high run for this year’s event at 130. Hohmann had the second highest at 112. On his Facebook Corteza wrote: “Wow!!! The first Asian to win since 1912
Champion Lee Van Corteza ran a 268 unofficially after his 100-point game with Michael Yednak in the round robin. In the other semi-finals, Fulcher and Corteza both struggled. The beginning of the match saw both players consecutively foul in a defense battle that saw the score in the negatives for the first 45 minutes of play. After one hour, neither player had even 1 rack in the positive scoring. Eventually Corteza pulled away and sat at a comfortable 70 ball lead needing less than 3 racks to win. Fulcher was determined and clawed his way back to within only 2 racks from tying Corteza. A costly scratch put Lee Van back at the table, and then he missed an easy 7-ball which ended up banking and fluking back into the called pocket. The good fortune was huge and the first and only lucked in shot of all the TV matches. Unfortunately for Fulcher, this sealed his fate with Corteza running out the rest of the match for a 200-145 win.

This weekend, October 14-15, 2017, Elizabeth City, NC was the place to be for this year’s US Open 9 Ball warm-up the 3rd Annual Dismal Swamp 9-Ball Classic. Owners Jimmy, Ashley and Scott Cartwright - father & two sons – laid out the red carpet at Colonial Cues. With tournament sponsors Glover Law Firm, Biggs Cadillac, Jim Todd, Toyota of Elizabeth City, East Coast Landscaping, McDonald’s, David and Allison Cianciulli, Mike Burton with Joss Cues and the City of Elizabeth, the Cartwrights put together another great event. The star-studded thirty-two player field included former US Open champs Shane Van Boening, Earl Strickland, Tommy Kennedy and Jeremy Jones as well as Hall of Famers Loree Jon Hasson and Karen Corr. In addition, Billy Thorpe, Alex Pagulayan, Brandon Shuff, Danny Basavich, Dennis Orcollo, Devin Poteet, Jayson Shaw, Sky Woodward, Shaun Wilkie, Tony Chohan, Max Eberle, Ernesto Dominguez, James Aranas plus Petri Makonnen and Jani Siekkinen from Finland put up $250 to take their shot on the nine foot Brunswick Gold Crowns. The format was double elimination – race to 9 on the winner’s side, race to 8 on the one loss side – winner break, rack your own. On Friday night, everyone was treated to an exhibition by Venom Trickshots the one and only Florian Kohler. This is definitely not your grandfather’s trick shot show! For those who haven’t seen him in action, he’s incredible! This was followed by the players auction and then most headed to bed – first round matches started the next day at 10 am! First round action saw Alex Pagulayan over Karen Corr, Devin Poteet lost to Tommy Kennedy, Jayson Shaw beat Jeremy Jones and Sky Woodward defeated Shaun Wilkie. Tony Chohan was taken down by Jani Siekkinen while fellow Finn, Petri Makonnen, lost to Shane Van Boening. Second round action was really brutal! Loree Jon Hasson lost to Billy Thorpe, James Aranas bowled over the always tough Alex, Brandon Shuff trimmed Earl Strickland, Dennis Orcollo defeated Danny Basavich, Jayson Shaw sent Tommy west, Sky won over Jani and Shane dispatched Max Eberle to the west side of the chart. It wasn’t getting any easier! In the third round, James sent Billy to the one loss side while Dennis did the same to Brandon. Sky polished off Jayson while Shane dusted off Kevin West. By now, there were four players left on the winner’s side of the chart – James Aranas vs. Dennis and Sky vs. Shane. Dennis and Sky emerged for the hot seat match while James and Shane headed over to the other side to duke it out with the remaining players. The battle for the hot seat resulted in Dennis locking up his spot in the finals 9-5 and Sky going west to await the results of the Jayson-Shane match. Jayson moved on in a nailbiter – 8-7. Shane had to settle for a 4th place finish. Looking to avenge his earlier defeat by Sky, Jayson was a man on a mission. He won 8-6, leaving Sky in third place.

October 15, 2017 was the date of The BPT Monthly 10-Ball Open at Markley Billiards in Norristown, PA. There were 12 entrants in this $30 entry, race to 7 tournament. Benny Blanco met Scott Haas in the hot seat match with Scott sending Benny (7-2) to the one loss side. Shaun Dobson denied Benny (7-3) another shot at Scott, leaving Scott in 3rd place. The final between Scott and Shaun was very close, with Scott edging out Shaun by a score of 7-6.

from: Mike Zuglan - Joss 9-Ball Tour Congratulations to our 2017 Joss Junior 9-Ball Champions, Thomas Haas won the 18 & under division and Zach Hemendinger prevailed in the 12 & under division. Thomas Haas made it to the finals undefeated rather easily but it was no easy task from there. Canadian Brenden Croft, who had lost his first match to last year’s 12 & under champ, Ivo Linkin 9-7, eventually avenged that loss by besting Ivo 9-8 to make it to the finals. As the event was played just like our regular Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour events, it was true double elimination in the finals. Brenden, with the momentum on his side took the first set 9-5 forcing another to determine the winner. Thomas was not deterred however and came back strong for the win by a 9-4 margin. Great play was witnessed by all of the 18 & under players and you will definitely be seeing their names rising to the top soon. In the 12 & under division, it was Zach Hemendinger prevailing over Kailey Bombard 7-4. This division had a small field and it was decided to play a round robin format followed by single elimination. Each play had a chance to play every other player at least once until the single elimination rounds. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day playing some pool. I would once again like to thank the many people and companies who generously donated products and their time to help. I would like to acknowledge and thank them all as it is because of them that each participant received some of their items. There were also 6 free raffles for the players for the larger items. Jim Prather Prevails at Stix-n-Stones
of the day, Jim Prather. Rich Senna beat out Ryan Lineham, Clyde Matta, and Al McGuane, before his loss to Jamie, leaving him in 4th place. Clyde and Rob Diehl finished out a tough day in 7th/8th, while Al and Ben Savoie wound up as 5th/6th finishers. Congratulations to all our finishers, and all who came and played their hearts out! JIM PRATHER I want to start out by thanking Stix & Stones in Abington, Ma in for adding $750 to our 2nd of at least 15 Ride the Nine tournament stops, and for hosting our event on September 30-October 1, 2017. I would also like to thank all of the players who came out to play a fun filled day of pool! The day started out with 33 hungry players, all with their eyes on first place. The hunt began with Jim Prather forcing his will on opponents such as Cameo Moy, Clyde Matta, Ben Savoie, and defeating Danny Pavao to win the Hot Seat in a 6-0 victory. Before his loss to Jim, Danny had taken out the likes of Kevin Piccinin, Jared Young, Paul Rota, and Al McGuane, landing ultimately in 3rd place. Continuing to the one loss: Jamie Moniz stormed through the one loss side after losing a close race to Jared Young, becoming a giant killer and taking out behemoths the likes of Kevin Piccinin, Rich Howard, Rich Senna, and Danny Pavao, to land in second place after a close match with the Winner

Melendez Undefeated at TriState Steinway
Juan Melendez was undefeated in Tri-State’s Tour Stop at Steinway Billiards, (Astoria, Queens, NY) tournament on October 26, 2017. There were 47 players at this $1000 added 9-Ball Event. Juan’s winning trail to victory included wins over Jamie Parker 6 - 4; Allison LaFleur 6 - 4; Marisol Palacios 6 - 3; Luis Jimenez 8 - 6; and John Francisco 8 - 5 for the Hot Seat. The Final between Juan Melendez and John Francisco see sawed; however, Juan took advantage of a missed shot and claimed the victory 8 - 7.
The next Tri-State event will be on October 29, 2017 at Clifton Billiards, Clifton, NJ. MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.
7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs.
