Coloring Seattle’s New Architecture
Green
Seattle is recognized as a leader in sustainability for its modern approach to green design and its commitment to citywide carbon neutrality. As we see the trend to build green becoming mainstream, b9 architects, a leader in Seattle, explores new ways to achieve sustainability in all projects. Our practice is known for a strong design approach integrating technological considerations as well creating community. Awarded with the 2010 Young Architect Award by AIA Seattle, we create innovative, sustainable, modern architectural solutions. We transform urban spaces in and around Seattle with a uniquely green approach, utilizing open, connective spaces and maximizing access to natural light. Several of our projects have been recognized for their design and dedication to green approaches, materials and technologies. Urban Canyon, a seven home community in Seattle achieved the highest green certification (the first multifamily project to do so in Seattle) highlighted by solar technologies, green roofs and reclaimed and recycled materials. It also was recognized as one of five winners in this year’s AIA Future Shack awards, for creating innovation in residential projects. We designed and developed the Judkins Park House, recognized nationally for its unique approach to creating infill development. Our design saved a 1900 farmhouse and created a new neighbor, a modern green home partially attached in the old driveway. That’s green! Urban Trees was recognized as one of four example projects for the Seattle City Council during its update to Seattle’s Multifamily Zoning code. It too won a Future Shack award a year ago for its focus on community and innovation in site planning, achieved through Seattle’s public Design Review process. Our values are further exemplified in a current project that saves a 1904 home in Seattle, adding a new duplex behind. Designed to achieve the highest green certification, the home will save 35% of the homeowners’ energy for heating, reducing the carbon footprint of the homes by 20%.
RENAISSANCE SEATTLE HOTEL Lobby Court Bar & Lounge
Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle’s refined luxury destination offering premier skyline views and downtown amenities, announces the addition of the Lobby Court Bar & Lounge. Now opened, the Lobby Court Bar & Lounge serves lunch, small plates and hand-crafted cocktails daily. “We are excited to announce the addition of Lobby Court Bar & Lounge as part of the completion of our significant renovation project,” said Nancy Helms, director of sales and marketing, Renaissance Seattle Hotel. “We designed the space with our guests in mind and hope they enjoy the fine nuances of luxury and drama, allowing it to be a place that moves effortlessly from day to night.” Renaissance Seattle Hotel partnered with Zena Design Group, a Seattle-based interior architecture and design firm, to create a custom space that is playful, sophisticated and relaxing yet meets the diverse needs of the hotel’s guests. The bar was constructed to offer three distinct zones – social communal area to network and dine; individual area to recline and relax; and service area. Inspired by the hotel’s location in the Pacific Northwest, the design concept included creating a warm, indigenous space that surprises guests around every corner.

I’ve been a member at Verity Credit Union for ages; they set me up with a great auto loan with no payments for 90 day. I just heard about their Platinum Passport Visa and figured I’d try it out on girls’ night. We went to Ray’s Boathouse where I get one entrée free, just one of many participating restaurants whenever I use the card. No embarrassing coupons – just my credit card. Also, Verity refunds up to $25.00 in ATM fees every month. So I don’t have to run around looking for a free ATM. I saved money and stress because my credit union cares about me. Save Hundreds of hours a year By Raegan McKibbin, Laughing Budda
The art and science of cosmetic tattooing goes by many different names. Permanent makeup, micropigmentation, permanent cosmetics, derma pigmentation, intradermal cosmetics, and dermagraphics. The most obvious benefit of cosmetic tattoos is that it saves time. People with busy schedules or long commutes can take several minutes out of their routine each day. Your makeup now won’t smudge or fade, won’t come off after swimming, a work out, or shower. For women who may have lost breasts, skin pigmentation such as vitiligo, or eye-brow hair, the aesthetics of cosmetic tattoos could rejuvenate self-image and self-esteem. It would also alleviate the related self-consciousness experienced by many in such positions. Women finding it difficult to apply makeup because of poor eyesight, impaired motor skills, arthritis, Parkinson’s or M.S., find cosmetic tattooing to be the perfect solution to makeup. Women with lip scars can use permanent lipstick to hide the marks. Cosmetic tattoos can also benefit women with cosmetic allergies.
“DIGESTIVE FAILURE” THEORY By Jonathan V. Wright, MD
The proliferation of over-the-counter and even vending-machine versions of Zantac,® Pepcid,® and other patent-expired “acid-blockers” has prompted this brief note to remind us all of yet another theory of aging, the “digestive failure” theory. It’s long been noted that grandpas and grandmas have considerably more indigestion than younger folks, but their indigestion generally has been ascribed to “being older.” Not much thought has been given to the possibility that the “being older” could (at least in part) be due to the indigestion! Let’s give it a little thought. If we have bodies made up of some 60 or so essential nutrients (essential being defined as nutrients without which we sooner or later would drop dead), then how healthy are we going to be if even one of those essential nutrients isn’t getting through very well? Like engines running on a lean fuel mixture, our cells are going to misfire, sputter, and ultimately choke. What if a dozen or more nutrients are in short supply? How are our bodies, particularly older bodies, going to keep themselves in good repair? Like older houses, older bodies require more parts and maintenance, not less. It just makes sense that, if we’re not digesting and assimilating properly, not supplying all the cells of our bodies with a full complement of essential nutrients, we’re going to age and fall apart more rapidly. A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association tells us that “only” 10% of “healthy” older folks have inadequate levels of stomach acid production. (Apparently, that doesn’t include all those older folks gulping down over-the-counter and vending machine Zantacs and Pepcids, persuaded of their virtues by the barrage of newly-unleashedby-FDA direct-to-the-public TV, radio, and print advertising.) Back in the 1930s, studies by the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins on several thousand older folks told us that by age 60 nearly half of us had functionally low stomach acid. After some 27 years of nutritionally oriented medical practice, I’m more inclined to agree with the researchers at Mayo and Hopkins, especially since I’m working mostly with folks who don’t consider themselves healthy. Moreover, this problem is not limited to older people. To read the full article and other articles by Dr. Wright, please visit www.TahomaClinic.com

The Secrets of Younger Looking Skin by Peter J. Jenkin, MD, FRCPC, FAAD
When we think of a child’s skin, we think of how it glows and appears almost radiant. As we age, we lose that radiancy and our skin begins to lose it’s lustre and smoothness. Sunlight, both natural and artificial, are the main causes of what we associate with aging. We can help preserve that youthful appearance with protection and repair. Protection: Sunlight consists of two main types of ultraviolet light - UVA and UVB. UVB is the wavelength which mostly accounts for our sunburns and is the prime contributor towards skin cancer. UVA is the wavelength which causes most of the “ageing” of our skin. It causes the wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels and the lack of lustre we associate with older skin. It also contributes to the development of skin cancer, especially melanoma. In order to protect our skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light, we need to be using sunscreens which block both UVA and UVB. Because UVA will go through windows and windshields in our cars, we need to be using these sunscreens every day. The effects of the sun damage are cumulative so everything we can do on a daily basis to protect our skin will pay off down the road with younger looking skin and fewer skin cancers. Repair: Much of the damage from sunlight is caused by the formation of what are called “free radicals”. These molecules seek to stabilize themselves and in doing so, cause damage to a variety of skin cells. Collagen, a protein which gives our skin its suppleness and tautness is especially susceptible to damage from free radicals. Antioxidants are a sort of cell rescue team helping to neutralize the free radicals and repair the damage left behind. Antioxidants can be obtained in a healthy diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables. They can be applied topically in different products and when added to a sunscreen can actually make the sunscreen perform better. Vitamin C is the commonly used topical antioxidant. Vitamin A derivatives are widely used to repair sun damage. Over-the-counter preparations containing retinol have been shown to be effective at repairing the skin, especially when used in higher concentrations. The best results come from using prescription tretinoin (Retin-A). Results can be seen within a few weeks and continue to improve for up to 1 year. Continued use maintains the improvement when combined with a sunscreen. Improvement in texture, colour and tightening can be seen and there are no side effects to be concerned about long term use. So how do we achieve and maintain the most youthful looking skin?” 1: Daily use of a sunscreen which blocks both UVA (zinc oxide, titanium, avobenzone) and UVB. 2: Daily use of a retinoid - prescription strength tretinoin is best. 3: Topical antioxidants daily and a diet containing lots of fruits and leafy green vegetables.
Your Incredible Feet By Mary VonRanker, LMP CR, CedarMists Healing Arts
People who truly enjoy massage often comment, “I wish they could linger longer on my feet!” Over 70% of our nerve endings land in our feet, ears and hands. This means when someone touches your feet, they are virtually soothing those nerve endings and relaxing the rest of the body. When specific touch is applied to your feet, stress deposited in various parts of your body is reduced because of your system’s natural inclinations to be well balanced and have been stimulated. Reflexology affords you a simple way to access this natural wisdom for healing and wellness. Reflexology has been found to be extraordinarily effective at reducing stress in digestive, sinus, musculoskeletal, immune and hormonal systems. In addition to reflexology, there are some simple things you can do at home to rejuvenate your incredible feet. After a long day at work, fill up a dishpan halfway with some tepid water, 2 cups of Epsom salts and several drops of your favorite oil such as lavender or eucalyptus. Next time you are near a shoe store, take the time to measure both the length and width of your feet keeping in mind muscles that control your feet and body are strengthened by free natural motion and we should give them minimally constrained toe room. Lastly, purchase a simple wooden flat roller to get instant relaxation across your feet.
The Truth about Disposable Diapers Disposable diapers contain Tributyl-tin (TBT), a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals, as well as Sodium Polyacrylate which is the same substance that was removed from tampons due to its link to toxic shock syndrome. Although no long term studies have been done on the effects of these chemicals being in constant contact with your baby for up to 24 months, studies have been done to prove the chemical emissions from disposable diapers can cause asthma and respiratory problems in children who use them. A by-product of the paper-bleaching process used in manufacturing disposable diapers, Dioxin, has been shown to cause cancer, birth defects, liver damage, skin diseases and genetic damage. Trace quantities of this most toxic cancer related chemical may even be found in disposable diapers. Cloth diapers delivered by a professional diaper service are: • More cost effective than disposable. • Are much better for the environment. • Better for the health of your baby. • Greatly reduces the amount of air pollution. • Uses half of the water used in at home laundry. • Free from many of the chemicals contained in disposable diapers.
“My life changed when I started practicing Bikram Yoga” Jackie, age 41, Seattle. The first class of Bikram Yoga can be intense, overwhelming, hot. The second class is easier. The third class easier and it goes from there. Practicing Bikram Yoga is like cleaning your body and mind from the inside out. You sweat, you toil, you find muscles you never knew you had and then, one day, you feel different. You have more energy. You feel happier. Your skin glows. You crave foods that are healthier. You drink more water. And the list goes on. When considering Bikram Yoga make sure instructors are highly-trained teachers who are certified and regularly re-trained. Sponsored by Sweatbox Yoga

the condition of the colon & and body’s circulation can be analyzed. While the iris reveals very little change, the sclera shows the most drastic changes taking place in the body. Sclerology (study of the white of the eye) is focused mainly on the red veins and is indicative of more current conditions. Often the reddest vein shows chronic, congested or inflamed organs. In addition, Sclerology shows more of the healing process. When the veins show recession, or spaces where it looks like the vein is partially erased, we know healing has taken place. Also, the Sclerologist observes the location, color of red, the width, and the intensity; the way the vein travels across the whites reveals parasites and tumors. These also reveal blood pressure, specific organs in distress, including the cause of the problem. Example: if the stomach shows up in the iris as a white cloudy patch in the stomach area one can determine over-acidity, putrefaction and perhaps the beginning of a hiatus hernia in the stomach. This putrefaction or lack of acid makes it difficult to digest foods. When looking to the sclera we can determine what is not being digested specifically protein, carbohydrates or fats. We also can see what other organ, such as pancreas and/or gall bladder is involved. NOTE: this is not a medical exam or a definitive diagnosis of disease and consulting a Naturopath with the Iridologist/ Sclerologist results is advised. Personality Iris This is another subject we need to consider - the tie between the iris and the personality - the newest study which ties many of these facets together using the emotions as a basis.
Your Eyes tell the whole story By Nancy Seals The eye is an extension of the brain, recording patterns relating to physical conditions of the body. By using a specially designed high tech digital camera the Iris and Sclera are photographed, by the Iridologist/Sclerologist and transferred to a computer screen and the evaluation takes place immediately. Iridology/Sclerology is originally from Europe; it is fast becoming a main stream alternative here, but not commonly recognized by the allopathic practitioners. Health practitioners have questions such as: How can this help me or my clients? Can this be an effective tool in prevention? Can it reduce the need for expensive tests? We provide education to help clients understand the body in a unique way. We can spot problems by looking at the entire body, not just a piece of it. It is a fraction of the costs of regular tests and it is a great teaching tool. It is used extensively in Russia & taught in their medical schools. Why? Because it is cost effective and simple. Naturopaths, chiropractors, nutritionists, massage therapists and acupuncturists all can use the Iridologist/Sclerologist evaluation effectively. Iridology (study of the color part of the eye) shows inherited strengths & weaknesses within the organs of the body. In examining the iris the focus is on light, dark, color changes, and patterns in the iris of the eye. During one’s lifetime very little notable change will take place in the iris, however, here
Northwest Women at highest risk for vitamin D deficiency By Dr. Lucinda Messer and Sidse Powell
Hopefully, most of you reading this article are taking a much higher dose of vitamin D than the miniscule 600 IU recommended by the new RDA. Maybe you’ve read about its significant health benefits, or perhaps your doctor has put you on a high dose because you tested deficient. Or worse yet, you’re suffering from a disease or condition with a known link to vitamin D deficiency; such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), depression, and even skin cancer. What links vitamin D deficiency to so many serious diseases? The answer lies within the true nature of vitamin D. Which is: vitamin D is not a vitamin, but once activated in the body, becomes a powerful hormone capable of turning genes on and off. Genes which are responsible for cancer detection, which can reduce tumor size, protect against autoimmunity, regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation, provide an overall sense of well-being and much more. Because vitamin D is not inherent in our body, our skin is brilliantly designed to harness the power of sunlight and synthesize vitamin D. For fair skinned persons, a 15-30 minute exposure will yield upwards of 15,000 IU of vitamin D. It isn’t likely, evolutionarily speaking, that our bodies would allow such a grand production of D if it wasn’t needed. With our major source of vitamin D coming from the sun, it’s important to note that not all sunlight is created equally. Afternoon, evening and wintertime sunlight for anyone above the 35th parallel, is not hot enough or strong enough to synthesize vitamin D in our skin. What this means for the PNW, with an annual average of 29 hot, clear summer days, is the health effects on our cloudy region have been tragic. Did you know that Washington State has the highest rate of breast cancer diagnosis in the country? Did you know that rates of Multiple Sclerosis are higher in the PNW than anywhere in the world? Did you also know that MS is almost completely unheard of near the equator where strong, hot sunlight is plentiful year round? The good news is natural sunlight is not the only source of vitamin D. And while food fortification is a negligible source, a good quality supplement, in a high enough dose, can effectively raise your levels and activate the miraculous system of health protection our bodies came designed with.
Hire a Wingwoman It’s Just Lunch Directors Betty Sinclair & Sara French offer a personalized and “insider” approach to successful dating in Seattle
Hire a wingwoman!
The scenario: You’re at a social gathering having a great time. The little problem: As you look around at all the friends and family with partners, dates or spouses, that feeling comes up again. You know that having someone by your side doesn’t define you – it’s just that sometimes you think it would be nice to have someone to share all this with. Not that your family and friends haven’t been trying to hook you up. But the truth is, you just don’t have the time, visibility or access to the caliber of people you want to meet; and you’ve experienced the cookie-cutter dating services that will have you believe some computer algorithm – or the random experiences single dating groups offer – will produce a perfect Barbie or Ken for you. What about a twist on a popular element – that person who rides shotgun and gives you advice on how to meet people? Maybe you need a wingwoman. You outsource a lot of things in your life, so it makes sense to give this job over to the matchmaking professionals at It’s Just Lunch Seattle. Having your own personal wingwoman adds an old-fashioned component to this modern, sophisticated dating service. With over 8 years of business in the Seattle dating scene, this well-respected agency knows their city, and really knows their clients. “Once people have made a call and expressed initial interest,” says Owner/Director Betty Sinclair, “we invite them to come in for an interview. This is where we get to know the client and what they’re looking for, and only after that do we decide whether we’re a good match – for each other.” It’s Just Lunch Seattle has hundreds of success stories. The agency coordinates over 900 first dates a month. Clients are guaranteed a minimum of 12 introductions over the course of a year’s membership. Sixty percent of referrals come from those clients. Advance Techniques for Botox By Teri Burnett MD
The good news is that recent developments in the use of Botox and Dermal Fillers can now provide solutions that we have never been able to achieve, even with surgery. Difficult areas such as the under-eye area, the corners of the mouth and even the tell-tale neck and hands are now treatable with no down time. Many advanced techniques have been developed for Botox. Botox is a muscle relaxer which has traditionally been used only in the upper face, Lower lid bulges, “gummy” smiles, chin dimpling, nasal tip droop, sagging eyebrows, plus “necklace” lines and neck bands can now be improved in a simple office visit. Fillers aren’t just for the lip area anymore. These products are designed to replace the volume loss that occurs with aging. Not only does skin tend to thin with age, but the underlying fat and even bone reabsorb over time. More advanced techniques allow for treatment of additional areas including cheek and chin augmentation, blending of lower lid hollows (tear troughs), nasal tip sculpting, jowl reduction, brow lifting and hand rejuvenation. Newer dermal fillers also last much longer. The most common are made from a major component of skin, Hyaluronic Acid. While collagen lasted about 2-3 months, these last 6-12 months and require no allergy testing. Other types of fillers can last even longer. Very recently, Lidocaine has been incorporated into some fillers, providing for numbing without the time required for creams or the discomfort of dental blocks. If you are trying fillers for the first time, you may wish to opt for a shorter acting product and keep in mind that with both fillers and Botox, lesser amounts usually give a more natural result. A bit more can be added at any time. Finally, when selecting a provider, make sure you feel they understand your goals and answer any questions you may have. Also, look for someone whose aesthetic sense you trust and who has an appropriate background as well as extensive training and experience. They will be able to combine the use of fillers and Botox for the best possible results.
Balance your life with
Chinese Medicine By Nancy Knode Licensed Acupuncturist, Harbor Healing Center.
Women’s health care is an area in which Chinese medicine is particularly successful. Good health is all about balance. In order to be healthy there must be a balance of the vital energies of the body -- Qi and Blood and Yin and Yang. This becomes even more important as we age. Energetic deficiencies and/or stagnation can cause fatigue and illness. Whether a woman is in need of support during pregnancy, or is suffering from PMS, perimenopausal symptoms, menopausal symptoms, or simply fatigue, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be extremely helpful. Acupuncture is also a wonderful support for a stressful life. Acupuncture is very calming to the nervous system, and people are usually quite surprised at how deeply relaxed they feel after having acupuncture. With regular treatments, acupuncture can help the body and mind relearn how to relax. Chinese medicine works best as a regular part of a health program. Seeking treatment only when a condition becomes acute is not the best approach. Preventative treatments can keep the body in balance, and can help to prevent many ailments.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects many people in the United States from children to the elderly, both men and women. IBS is a common functional bowel disorder. That means at this time there is no known physical cause. Typical symptoms are abdominal pain associated with bloating, constipation or diarrhea, and pain relieved by a bowel movement. Over 2 million physician visits each year are related to this illness making it one of the most expensive gastrointestinal disorders in the U.S. Researchers have identified several factors that underlie symptoms of IBS. Some of these include changes in intestinal motility, sensitivity to intestinal sensations, mild inflammation in the intestines, bacterial in the small intestines, genetic predisposition, and emotional distress. A number of medications and non-drug therapies have helped people with IBS. Treatments include diet changes, increasing coping skills, hypnosis, and relaxation skills. Sometimes working with a therapist can make it easier. Exercise may also help. Researchers are trying to understand what causes or triggers IBS and find effective treatments. With advances in technology, new methods are becoming available. For example, researchers are studying the role of inflammation inside the intestine and the use of antibiotics to decrease over grown bacteria. Others are looking at changes in hormones and genetic influences. If you suffer from IBS or know of someone who suffers from IBS symptoms, there are numerous resources and selfhelp programs available. However, it is still best to seek the advice of a health care provider who is knowledgeable about IBS first.
Untraditional method of managing Chronic pain
If you or a woman close to you suffers from chronic pain, know that medical marijuana is a legal option for a happier life. Medical marijuana is becoming increasingly popular among sufferers of extreme and debilitating menstrual cramping. Many women claim significant relief when medicating with marijuana alone or when paired with conventional pain medication. Women experiencing menopause have also claimed medical marijuana eases the stress their body is going through, allowing them to enjoy their day and get a peaceful night’s sleep. Medical marijuana has also proven helpful for conditions that are – while not gender exclusive - prevalent among women. Many patients claim the chronic pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome [IBS], a condition twice as common in women as it is in men, is greatly reduced by medicating with marijuana. Other painful conditions found more often in women, from migraines to multiple sclerosis, are becoming more widely treated with marijuana. Women who thought there was no relief for their condition are finding answers through the expanded use and research of medical marijuana especially here in Washington State. For these symptoms, as with most chronic pain, we recommend marijuana strains that are high in CBD content – the chemical compound in marijuana that promotes relaxation. Most indica or indica-heavy hybrids are known for these effects, but always do your research and ask your local cooperative for the best strain for your condition. Sponsored by 4 Evergreen Group Today, new studies are being published in peer-reviewed journals that demonstrate cannabis has medical value in treating patients with serious illnesses such as Aids, Glaucoma, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Arthritis, Migrains and Chronic pain. Cannabis has enormous potential for protecting the brain and central nervous system from the damage that results from various movement disorders. Researchers have found cannabis fights the effects of strokes, brain trauma, spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. Much research has been done on how cannabinoids act as neuroprotective agents to slow the progression of diseases such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s which affects over 52% of people 85 or older. Cannabis therapies have also been effective in treating pain from Arthritis and other rheumatic and degenerative hip, joint and connective tissue disorders. Cannabis has been shown to have powerful immune-modulation and anti-inflammatory properties indicating treatment of chronic inflammatory disease. With Cancer, cannabis has been found to help cancer patients with pain and nausea resulting from radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Recent research indicates it has tumor-reducing and anti-carcinogenic properties as well. Cannabis can provide relief from pain itself or it can control the nausea associated with taking opiod drugs. It may also control vomiting and dizziness that often accompanies severe, prolonged pain. Sponsored by Cascadian Natural Health
Aging in Body but Not in Soul Kellie Moeller
After spending many years in ministry, fully engaged in the spiritual needs of people, it was a surprise when I began my work in senior housing. The spiritual aspect of life was barely given a nod. Having ignored the significance of faith, many communities have lost the means to a holistic approach in caring for seniors. In the absence of a holistic approach, the later years of life are often heavy and burdensome. Though the body may break down, faith can be renewed through cultivating a relationship with God. Studies have shown that 75% of Americans past age 65 consider religion to be very important. Medical studies indicate that spiritual people exhibit fewer self-destructive behaviors (i.e. smoking, drug/alcohol abuse, depression and even suicide), and in turn feel the benefits of less stress, improved blood pressure, boosted immune system, and a greater total life satisfaction through the gained sense of peace, security and community. Their hope is in the “life that is to come.”
We recognize that faith matters and it is an intricate part of everything we do. CRISTA TIPS for keeping spiritually healthy while you age: • Stay spiritually connected. This may be a prayer group, bible study, ministry volunteer involvement, etc. • Join with a faith community or church regularly. • Read books that express spiritual ideas and share ideas with someone. • Share with your children and grandchildren your “God Stories” of how your faith was made real. • Do a “spiritual genealogy” project. Through researching, I found out that my great aunt, who was in full-time ministry in Africa, retired and lived several years at CRISTA Senior Living. Now, full-circle, I am part of the CRISTA team. Come see Crista Living for yourself what faith in action looks like. Call Kellie Moeller at (877) 639.3292 or email kmoeller@crista.net.
