PRACTICAL MAGIC Barbara Bryant used to laugh at the women chosen for makeovers on TLC’s What Not to Wear. “They just need to get over it,” she thought as they saw their clothes dumped into a garbage can. It was pure entertainment for Barb and she never imagined she would be in a similar situation. But, after seeing an article about local stylist, Karen Herrema, in the Columbian and attending one of her demos, Barb realized she was a candidate for a makeover. “But I thought I just needed a few tweaks.” stated Barb. Karen Herrema is a trained and certified Personal Stylist. She works with the D.R.E.S. system which is a trademark of the Northwest based company, Holobi. Founded in 2008 by Seattle resident, Margaret Spencer, Holobi is a group of personal stylists who are independent contractors using the system and materials created by Spencer. The D.R.E.S. system takes away the stereotypical body types of apple, pear and rectangle, instead categorizing women into the shapes of gemstones: Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire. Once categorized, participants are taken through a three-step process; Profile, Organize and Shop.

PROFILE The first thing Karen noticed when she began working with Barb was that many of her clothes did not fit. Barb lost 30 pounds a few years ago, but has not changed her wardrobe to accommodate her new size. “I don’t think I really saw myself in the mirror as I currently am,” Barb said. Karen explained

that this is typical. “Women are so used to camouflaging themselves and hiding behind baggy clothes.” One of the most important parts of the process is the Profile. “It all starts here,” says Karen. “This is where I get to know my client’s personality. I can’t remove things from her closet until we determine her personal style, body type, best colors and clothing needs. This sets the tone for what is to come.” According to Karen Herrema, statistics show that only 1% of women are completely satisfied with their bodies. “Women are way too hard on themselves. As a stylist, my goal is to showcase a woman’s assets and downplay her flaws. A focal point can be created to take the eye away from the flaws with the right accessories and details in the style of clothing. Typically the idea is to bring the eye up which often takes the focus away from the hips, thighs or middle. It’s all about creating illusions to achieve balance!” says Karen. Barb’s personal style leans toward engaging textures, funky accessories, and vintage pieces. “I prefer a more Ethnic style, but have to observe a classic dress code at work. Sometimes it’s hard to mix the two.” Barb is a petite Sapphire (formerly known as pear) with some Emerald (formerly known as rectangle) characteristics. The goal was to balance her shoulders and hips; creating a waistline and elongating her torso, making her look taller and thinner. 12

Karen’s Tip: Many women won’t go near a heel and Barb was no exception. There are shoes out there with a 1-2 inch heel that are extremely comfortable. It’s just a matter of knowing the right brands and what to look for to match your foot. Pants should be hemmed ½ inch from the floor to extend the leg line as much as possible. A slightly pointed toe creates an illusion that helps the leg look longer. These tips can add height and very quickly take away pounds.

ORGANIZATION Now that Barb has been profiled, the next step is organization. Karen reviews Barb’s wardrobe and guides her in deciding what to keep and what to toss, ending with an efficiently organized wardrobe. Of course you have the final say. PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS

Karen uses the criteria developed in the profile to determine whether an item stays or goes. She says, “Sometimes I don’t have to say a thing as the client starts complaining about a piece. If they are pointing out flaws, it’s not going to get worn and needs to go.” Karen often says, “It’s ok but we can do better.” She teaches her clients how to find a flattering fit, choose the right colors and make overall wise choices. According to Karen, women waste hundreds of dollars each year on clothing that is wrong for them. “Many times I see pieces hanging in the closet, unworn with tags still attached,” she says. As Barb went through the closet organization and the fitting process, she learned that it was more flattering to her figure, if she did not tuck in all of her tops. When wearing a jacket or cardigan, buttoning one or two buttons directly underneath the bust helps show off her waistline and creates more of an hourglass shape.

SHOP When it comes to shopping, Karen helps clients get the most for their shopping dollars. She says, “In this economy, I want to help everyone and work within the budget they give me. I know how to shop the right stores and find a bargain. I teach women where to put their money and where they can cut corners.” Karen created a brown “capsule” for Barb that consisted of two pairs of pants she ADVERTISING INFORMATION AT WWW.SNAPSHOTEMAGAZINE.COM

Karen’s Tip: Spend your money on a structured jacket with a flattering fit. Look for seams that add a curve and a style that nips at the waist. A good jacket is a woman’s best friend because it hides the flaws we all talk about; our hips, middle and upper arms. Anyone from a size 2-22 can show shape, curves and hide flaws with the right jacket. already owned (one solid brown, one with a subtle pattern). The jackets, sweaters and tops purchased all coordinated with those two bottoms. “Many women consider brown to be a boring color, but it is a basic neutral that is just as versatile as black and is often more flattering,” says Karen. And that’s truly practical magic!” Lily Atelier in Downtown Camas, Washington is known for fitting many different shapes and sizes of women. Barb was not so sure. “I was nearly in tears,” she said. “But Karen and the women at Lily Atelier kept insisting that the jeans really were flattering. I finally bought a pair just so I wouldn’t have to try on any more. I rely on my friends and co-workers to give me their honest opinion, and everyone, including my friend Jack, says the jeans I bought fit great. I’m still having a hard time seeing it, but part of this experience is to really look in the mirror.” According to Karen, “The sales staff at Lily’s is the best! They listened, understood Barb’s hesitations and encouraged her to see her curves in a new way – in jeans!” 14

Karen tells us, “I am constantly amazed at what takes place with just a few changes in the style of clothing. Whether it be a subtle tweak, or a dramatic transformation, it is extremely gratifying to see how this process can affect a woman’s confidence and total outlook on life. Barb has taken it to a whole new level. I’m so pleased with her willingness to “step out of the box” and try new ideas. I really enjoyed working with her, and I think she looks fabulous!” PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS

Glance at the top 150 Privately held Oregon Companies list and you’ll find women CEOs scarcer than hen’s teeth. Beth Skillern, a former middle school teacher who worked her way up to CEO at law firm Bullivant Houser and Bailey is one of the few. Ironically, despite a keen interest in the law, graduating college with a teaching degree in the ‘60s seemed like a smart way to go for a woman back then. And Beth loved teaching. But when the time came to trundle her youngest child off to kindergarten, Beth decided if she didn’t pursue her dream then, she probably never would. When asked why there aren’t more women in her position, Beth’s focus is on the future, noting many more women entered the profession over the past 30 years and are in good positions to successfully work their way up, too. Perhaps that kind of quiet success is just what you’d expect from someone who for the last 24 years starts her day off with the same group of neighbor-friends, rain or shine, at 6 am to walk. Or from a CEO who insists that economic down times are not the time to jettison personnel and market development and whose open door policy is not just a figurative term, it’s a literal reality. Or from someone whose greatest on-the-job pleasure is mentoring, then seeing her mentees pass those lessons on to others, recognizing and fostering their skills and strengths.

Over the years, Beth worked hard to balance career and family demands. Unexpected family crises, and attending a soccer game took priority when it needed to, though that may have meant working long evenings after putting her daughters to bed and pulling weekends, too, especially when there was a big case coming up.

BUSINESS + CAREER

“I must have done something right,” Beth chuckles, “My family’s still speaking to me.” Bullivant prides itself on its acceptance of diversity, family-friendly policies and even its willingness to support part-time employees. Still, Beth pragmatically advises women raising a family while wanting to follow in her footsteps, “You can have it all, just not all at the same time. There’s an ebb and a flow, and sometimes you’re just going to be tired.”

On those rough days, the kind of day tough enough to take a walk, Beth finds sitting down with a cup of coffee and a cookie, any kind of cookie (from the woman who admits “I never met a cookie I didn’t like”) is the simple guilty pleasure that gets her through it.

After hours, Beth restores her optimism with stories, typically true, of courage and success in overcoming obstacles, like the building 0f Afghan schools for women, “Three Cups of Tea”, the deliberately intertwined lives of an Arab That same practicality pushes Beth to focus attor- and Israeli family in The Lemon Tree” and the neys now more than ever to get out of their safe, delightfully told tale of German resistance, “The cozy offices and market, seek out new opportuni- Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”. ties and directions. Bullivant Houser Bailey PC is a Portland-headquartered business and commercial litigation firm employing over 140 attorneys with six offices on the West Coast and alliances with several of China’s largest law firms. Chambers USA “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business” singled out Bullivant as a “West Coast litigation powerhouse” with clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 corporations. Winning Web Search Some Sneaky Simple Success Shortcuts by Dana Greyson

Winning in web search can take a twist on the “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” cliché… It’s “Know when to join ‘em to beat ‘em – for free!” Huh? HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Give Yourself the Local Edge

Imagine you offer housekeeping services in Portland, and business could be better. You’ve heard your website can be a valuable competitive tool, but yours is way past the first three pages of search and your budget is, well, broke. What to do?

Likely the first names that come up in search are some big national services, and yours is a one-man (or woman) business. But if someone looking local puts “Portland OR” into their search, their first listings past a few ads will be those savvy businesses who have taken a few minutes to fill out Google’s free business profile. Just go to www.Google.com/LocalBusinessCenter.com and create your profile. It literally puts you on the map of Portland house cleaning services. Statistically, most folks looking for local services will select someone within 15 miles.

Put Yourself in Your Prospective Customer’s Shoes If your prospects were “Googling”* for services like yours, what terms might they search on? House cleaning? Maid service? You get the idea. To find the top ones, try out a couple, and enter them into the free http://freekeywords. wordtracker.com. Use those words in a way that makes sense to prospects in your website title, descriptions and meta keyword tags, headings and more, especially in first 100-200 words on your page. Search engines are a lot like most of us -– they skim, expecting the most important stuff to be in big headlines or in the beginning. ADVERTISING INFORMATION AT WWW.SNAPSHOTEMAGAZINE.COM

Nab a Nice Niche Are there some other angles that you can use to differentiate yourself from the competition at large? What are your top web competitors touting? If they’re promoting environmentally friendly cleaning, is that something you can offer? If so, make it readily searchable throughout your web site description, text and tags. 31

BUSINESS + CAREER

Promiscuity Pays

WRAPPING UP

Ok, this is not about the latest sex enhancement tool or offering escort services with fringe benefits. It is about getting chummy and upping your search popularity by promoting logical links on each other’s sites. For example, maybe your green cleaning supplier gets great rankings and is also willing to list some of their clients, like you. Or your favorite customer is an eco-friendly bed-and-breakfast, and you put a link with their testimonial to their website. What about writing a review for a popular Amazon house cleaning book and linking to that review on your site? Maybe there’s even a top local professional commercial cleaner who doesn’t do houses and you can co-promote each other on your respective websites.

Web search success is serious stuff. As “The Truth About Search Engine Optimization” author Rebecca Lieb declares, “Searchers either find you, or they find your competitors.”

Time to take some action!

Shortcut to Search Success 1. Start by thinking like a cus-

Interview Strategies Three Simple Steps by Connie Dorigan

Photographed by Ilona LaRue

BUSINESS + CAREER

Many job searchers show up for an interview in a nice suit, with a copy of their resume and some research on the position in hand, but with little thought about a strategy for actually landing the position. The great thing about creating a “job search strategy” is that once you have it you can use it for every interview. The requirements for this tool are to simply follow the steps below. Take the time to think about the answers to the questions and write them down. Review you notes and practice or rehearse answering and asking questions before each interview. OVERVIEW When job searchers don’t get a job it is often not because they don’t have the skills, but simply because they didn’t interview as well as the person who was hired. As a job applicant your part in the hiring process is to articulate specifically why you should be hired. As they lead you through a series of questions, the company hopes to get to know you: your character, track record and reputation. This is one area where many people struggle. The following exercises will help you prepare. You will want to write out your answers so that you can review them before each interview. You may not have an opportunity to share all of the information during the interview. Your strategy is to fit it in as much as possible. This tool will help you identify the strengths the company wants and needs to know about you.

high. Once you have completed the exercises below create a key point outline on a note pad and bring it with you to every interview. A casual glance at the outline you have created will help keep you on track.

THE BASICS Review everything you have written several times before the interview Dress professionally/conservatively and wear no perfume or cologne. Bring a few copies of your resume Arrive early and be friendly to the receptionist Review the company website Follow up. Get a card from everyone you talk to during the interview. Send them a personal note thanking them for their time.

36

Step 1 Previous job experience All too often your thoughts about your job history aren’t all great. After all, you are leaving or you have already left. This exercise gives you a chance to pre-think the best possible aspects of your experience and allows you to keep a positive focus during the interview. Bottom line, it conveys that you are an enthusiastic person, productive employee and well respected by your employer. Answer the following three questions for each of your past jobs. • List three things you like about your current/ most recent job • List three of your best accomplishments or contributions in your current/most recent job • Quantify the impact of your accomplishments in your current/most recent job • List three things you are most known for in your current/most recent job

Step 2 What are your strengths? Identifying strengths and sharing them is a struggle for most people. This step will help you prepare a list of your strengths. Knowing your strengths makes it easier to share them. First choose 5 people in your life with whom you have a good relationship and ask them “What are the top 5 reasons someone should PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS

hire me?” Ask your best friend, your favorite co-worker, mentor or boss. Family members are also a good choice. Write down their feedback. You’ll draw on this information during your interview. Usually this exercise gives you a whole new view of yourself. Next, make a list of your own perspective of your strengths. You should now have a list of 8-10 strengths that you can share about yourself. Come up with examples to support each strength. If you cannot come up with an example, maybe it is not really a strength. If you say, “I am a hard worker” back it up with an example that will benefit your employer. The “I am a hard worker” statement now becomes “I am a hard worker, which means that you can count on me to always complete assigned tasks and find more productive work to do should I have time on my hands.” Another way to back up each strength is to ask yourself why you are good in that particular area. For example, someone who is always punctual may have an extremely strong commitment to being responsible or doing what he or she says. This is a great insight that you can share to support your character strengths which are often more important that your skills. ADVERTISING INFORMATION AT WWW.SNAPSHOTEMAGAZINE.COM

Step 3 Questions to ask during the interview Having a set of prepared questions in more important than you might think. Often, not having questions to ask during an interview can be a deal breaker. Not having questions can convey that you are not prepared or not interested. Below are questions that get the interviewer sharing their thoughts with you. (Note: Avoid asking 37

questions about salary or benefits during the first interview unless the interviewer brings it up.) About the company 1. Tell me how you would describe your department’s/company’s culture? 2. What is new and exciting in your company/ group/department? About the position 1. How would you describe the person that has performed the best in these positions? What about them contributed to their success in the position? 2. Can you tell me about any challenges or obstacles I should be aware of in this position? About the manager 1. Describe your management style. What would it be like to work for you?

Becky Tengwall 503.691.9909 Voice Gene Hamilton 503.691.9909 Voice For more information and other meeting locations, go to itakethelead.com

2. What are your expectations of me or of those in your department? 3. When you made the move to come here, what was the most compelling reason? 4. What is the most pressing problem or challenge to be solved in the next 60 days? 5. Profile your top performer for me. What does he/she do that makes him/her stand out? 6. What do you think of my skills and chances for this position? The opportunity to share information about you is during the interview. If you don’t say something about yourself, the interviewer won’t know it. If you are reliable, say it, if you are punctual, say it, etc. They are hoping you are the one… as much as you are hoping you are the one.

Minimizing Bathroom Clutter While bathrooms are some of the smallest rooms in the house, they tend to be the areas where a lot of personal items are stored. Typical bathroom sink counters and shelves are crammed full of cosmetics, medications, hair-styling items and dental care tools, looking cluttered and messy and making it difficult to clean them. “Research shows that many homeowners don’t like clutter in the bathroom and seek storage at their fingertips,” says Steve Bissell, president of Robern, a Kohler company and leader in bath storage solutions. For an innovative storage option, Robern has designed a new mirrored cabinet for people who want storage along with the aesthetics of a seamless mirror. The Uplift cabinet isn’t like the standard medicine cabinet over the vanity that opens out and may block your access to the sink. The seamless mirror lifts upward, with a position-hold feature allowing you access to everything inside. It is deep enough to safely contain medicine bottles, toiletries and a small radio and has an optional mount for an LCD TV. Interior lights and outlets for up to six electronic devices make the Uplift cabinet perfect for bathroom storage so you can have all those items you need at your fingertips. Athletes Do Yoga by Dana Layon

YOGA AND ATHLETICS Everyone is doing it – this thing called yoga. Doctors are prescribing it as an alternative therapy to reduce stress; physical therapists are recommending it to help patients rehabilitate; personal trainers are suggesting it as a complementary activity to cardio and weight training and schools are offering it as an elective in physical education courses – learning to balance the mind, body and spirit. 42

Simply put, yoga means “union” – uniting breath and movement, uniting mind and body – being present in every moment – not thinking about the next.

Some of the most prominent women in sports practice yoga. Tennis pros Venus & Serena Williams and Martina Hingis swear by their regular yoga practice. Golf pro Annika Sorenstam, basketball star Lisa Leslie and the entire US Women’s Soccer team have admittedly improved their athletic performance through a regular yoga practice. MIND + BODY + ORGANIC

BENEFITS FOR ATHLETES All athletes can benefit from a regular yoga practice – football players, swimmers, triathlete, cyclists and gymnasts to name a few.

INCREASED AWARENESS It all starts with the breath. Through slow, rhythmic breathing we become more aware of our surroundings and what is happening within our body. The breath is the foundation of reducing performance anxiety and improving concentration.

INCREASED MUSCLE FLEXIBILITY, RANGE OF MOTION, CORE STRENGTH AND BALANCE All of these things benefit athletes no matter what the sport. All yoga poses require core strength and stability; routines are comprised of dynamic flowing poses lengthening and strengthening the muscles. By relieving tension from the muscles we can increase our range of motion in our hips, shoulders and spine.

INJURY PREVENTION Probably the most important benefit of a regular yoga practice is injury prevention. When we are more aware, more focused and strong through our core – we are less likely to get hurt.

Pinot Noir for November Pinot Noir may be the toughest grape to grow, but the effort is well worth the investment. It is a fickle grape that demands optimum growing conditions, demanding warm days consistently supported by cool evenings. Pinot Noir is a lighter colored and flavored red wine. It’s flavors are reminiscent of sweet red berries, plums, tomatoes, cherries and at times a notable earthy or wood-like flavor, depending on specific growing conditions. Pinot Noir is well-suited to pair with poultry, beef, fish, ham, lamb and pork. It will play well with creamy sauces, spicy seasonings and may just be one of the world’s most versatile food wines. FAIR PAY FOR THE

LIFE OF THE PARTY

In Portland, OR, musicians rarely introduce themselves as musicians. The more common introduction is along the lines of guitarist/bartender or singer/receptionist. The optimist might view this as an enriching lifestyle honing many skills, but it’s mostly an issue of people torn between pursuing their passion and making a living.

Photography by mgvphoto.com

This has been a discussion held among musicians in this town for years. Recently, a coalition of Portland musicians have pushed these discussions into action and created the Free Trade Music Campaign. With a battle cry of “Because music IS a day job!” it is an effort to establish a basic minimum wage for musicians. For over a year and a half members of Portland’s chapter of

PHOTOGRAPHY + ENTERTAINMENT + EVENTS

the American Federation of Musicians, Local 99, have been brainstorming and painstakingly building a plan to continue their goal of improving the lives of musicians. “If the situation that we’re trying to fix didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have to be trying to earn [a living] 7 days a week,” says professional bassist and FTM committee member Sean Hudson. Those of us regularly attending local music events where we pay a cover charge might be swallowing skepticism right about now. But the fact is that there are lots of employees involved in your night of entertainment: the person checking your I.D. and collecting the cover charge, the bartender serving you drinks, the sound engineer keeping the head-splitting feedback to a minimum, and the promotions person who alerted you to the show in the first place. Traditionally, the aforementioned employees are paid by the venue, but unfortunately, an increasingly common practice is allotting musicians only a fraction of the money paid at the door. Bruce Fife, president of the Portland Musician’s Union, explains part of the coalition’s goal. “When you, the consumer, pays $5 or $10 at the door, we want you to know that your money actually makes it to the artists.” The American Federation of Musicians is not just a bunch of musicians giving each other pats on the back. This is a respectable national union 56

continually representing and protecting musicians since the end of the 19th century. When the Titanic sank, the organization helped the widows and children of musicians on the ship. When recording technology surfaced in the 1920’s, the AFM not only protested the massive loss of jobs in live theatre orchestras to “canned” music, but also established a minimum wage for studio musicians hired for recordings. Portland’s Musicians Union, Local 99, was established at the end of the 19th century as well. Some of their recent accomplishments have been overturning the prohibition

of underage musicians in venues serving alcohol, major involvement in the city’s smoking ban, and the creation of a new OLCC license allowing music venues more freedom to host all-ages shows. Considering some of the goals they’ve set and achieved in the past, the Free Trade Music Campaign will perhaps someday soon be another notch in their belt, even though it’s a rather grandiose goal. For well over a year, the Free Trade Music steering committee has been discussing ways to define what musicians’ wages should be. campaign, describes one of its main components, “What the campaign is trying to do is establish an hourly rate based on the capacity of the venue.” They call this the Fair Pay Scale, and it is a 5-tiered system assessing what tier a venue should be categorized in, and then suggesting an hourly rate of pay depending on how many members are in a band. Whether a venue has a

as a subjective system and is willing to engage in dialogue with interested venues. “We want feedback from the venues, too,” says Jenn Woodall, who is a professional clarinetist participating in the campaign. “What is confusing to them? What do they need from us?” she asks.

“There’s no one way to run a business. We understand that,” Fife admits. The campaign’s initial exposure to the community has garnered considerable support, but what the committee feels is glossed over is the fact that they are trying to build a relationship with the venues, not reprimand them. “We don’t want to put [venues] out of business,” Woodall explains. “That’s shooting ourselves in the foot.” The FTM comliquor license is also taken into acmittee acknowledges that many count. thing. Venues paying musicians more money might expect more of them and musicians, in turn, might hold themselves to higher standards, thus altering Portland’s musical culture for the better. Because both the venue and musicians have a vested interest, “It keeps the bands and the clubs honest,” Fife concludes. Portland being the musical Mecca that it is, however, ensures that any band/musician that really has the itch to play will make it happen. There will always be places for musicians to play, its just a matter of getting paid. Graham White-Smith, union member and campaign participant, points out that musicians are often not defined within the same parameters as other artists. “There is a line between culture and commerce,” he explains. “Restaurants not only charge money for food, but for the skilled person who prepares it. You can’t just take a painting off the wall in a gallery or a book off the shelf in a bookstore.” In essence, the FTM campaign hopes to, at the very least, ensure that musicians are paid by the hour like staff; like the bartender or sound engineer. Very much defined by the musicians involved, the FTM campaign has only matured through the efforts of its proponents. These folks know that the issues involved with the campaign are not black and white. Philosophies may vary even within the coalition; but they respect one another’s ideas. By incorporating these different perspectives into the campaign, it can only become more solid. Musicians, venue owners and employees, and venue patrons are all encouraged to become involved with the campaign. A good place to start is Tuesday happy hour at the Standard (14 NE 22nd at Burnside) from 4-6 pm. But visit the Fair Trade Music website for all updates at www.fairtrademusicpdx.org.
