BEAUTY AND FASHION Summer means making memories with friends and loved ones. There are more cameras at summer events than there are at a movie premiere, and you’ll want to look your best while you beat the heat.
hot and tired feet and legs in seconds with Community Trade peppermint from England.
Fortunately, a handful of products that should have a spot in your beauty bag can protect your skin while giving it a sun-kissed glow. Here are the top five affordable luxuries you should have in your makeup kit this summer to keep skin looking healthy, glowing and gorgeous:
If a vacation or quick weekend getaway is in the cards, make sure your travel kit is packed with travel-sized essentials like mini body butters, scrubs and skincare travel kits from The Body Shop. They save room in your suitcase and provide a beautiful summer glow no matter where you jet off to.
1 Bronzed Beauty
Just a few years ago, women spent hours soaking up the sun without the protection of sunscreen. Today, we know the dangers of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays and their potential to seriously damage skin. Instead, try Bronzing Powder from The Body Shop in a shade to match your skin tone. Each shade contains the antioxidant vitamin E to protect your skin and Community Trade marula oil, a highly effective moisturizer. Apply bronzing powder over foundation or add shimmer by wearing alone on the face and cheeks.
5 Vacation beauty
With your summer beauty bag packed, make sure you’ve got other essentials covered. Rock the retro look with a pair of candy-colored, 80’s inspired sunglasses. A stylish and oversized black straw hat looks at home on the runway or shading out the sun and a brightly colored sarong that can go from beach cover-up to casual dinner wear will having you feeling like a gilded goddess. For more information on summer beauty essentials, visit www.theBodyShop-USA.com. Courtesy of ARAcontent
2 Mascara that stands up to summer
The heat of summer can lead to less-than-beautiful raccoon eyes, so it’s important to have a good waterproof mascara in your toolkit that can stand up to the ocean, the pool and even an afternoon running through the sprinkler.
3 Bright eyes for hot nights
One of the most affordable ways to update your summer look is with eye color and this season’s hottest shades are intense. Celebrity makeup artist Chase Aston recommends Hot Brights Eye Color (available at BodyShop-USA.com). His favorite color combinations? Violet Sunset -- a flirty pairing of dusky pink with rich mauve and Pearly Sky - a vibrant deep aqua combined with earthy cream.
Karen Herrema Personal Stylist 360-256-7479 hercm@comcast.net www.holobi.com
“Violet Sunset is the perfect color palette for summer smoky eyes. For both the day and night, smudge this intoxicating color palette around the eyes,” says Aston. “These satin soft shades in Pearly Sky glide onto the eyes, creating a burst of color that shimmers in the sun for fresh, flirty hues for those hot summer days.”

BACK-TO-SCHOOL
back-to-school
“on a budget” Looking for recession-friendly ways to save on school supplies? Try these tips to stretch your dollar without depriving your kids. By GreatSchools Staff Unclutter your closets: Does it seem like your child outgrows his clothes every season? Instead of tossing out the too-small tees and jeans and hitting the mall, try organizing a clothing swap with friends and neighbors, preferably those with kids of varying ages. You’ll update his wardrobe while clearing out your closets — and saving money. Reuse and revamp what you already have: Many school supplies can have a second life, such as backpacks, binders, folders, and even pens. If a notebook has been only lightly used, tear out the marked-up sheets of paper and have your child decorate the cover with stickers, stencils, or colorful paper to give it a fresh look. Does your child’s backpack have a lifetime warranty? Some companies like Jansport will repair broken zippers or replace damaged backpacks for free. Keep an eye out for sales and deals advertised in the newspaper and online. Stores will try to lure you in with their promotions in the hopes that you’ll buy everything there, discounted or not. Be sure to stick to the bargain items — if something is not on your list, just say no. Dig into discounts at dollar stores: Substantial savings abound at your local dollar store. Scissors, glue, erasers, rulers, crayons, and more can be purchased for far less than at chain or office supply stores. And you’ll find that many of the items are the same familiar name brands. LOCAL ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
INTERVIEW:
with an artist
Katie m. Berggren I absolutely love Katie’s art... so inspirational and loving... you can see emotion in the curves and the colors are warm and nurturing. Shiela: Where is home for you? Short description of where you grew up. Have you traveled anywhere? Katie: “Kalama, Washington was the place where my serious inspiration for painting found its wings. It is the place where my children were born, where I painted at the kitchen table before I set up my small studio space. I worked in Kalama for 5 years before our very recent move to East Vancouver. I now have a larger studio where I feel my work can really grow – the new studio is indeed a place where magic will happen. I grew up with my brothers and sister in Yacolt, Washington where we drew and wrote stories in our free time – we all four grew to be creative individuals in one way or another. In 2007 I traveled to Sweden to be with my brother as he got married, and experienced incredible creative and peaceful influences there – and filled many pages of my sketchbook with compositions that later became paintings.” Shiela: What brought you to art? Do you have any formal training?
“Crush”
“You May Say I’m e” “More to Giv 10
A Dreamer”
Katie: “I always (always) knew that I would be an artist; drawing and writing from the time I was very young. In High School, I studied Architecture as a way to use creativity towards a “career”. After completing the available drafting classes I moved onto Graphic Design – being told that I should come up with some employable way to be creative since I may not be able to make a living as a fine artist. Graphic Design and illustration took me to Clark College, then on to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. Graphic Design later made room for illustration and illustration eventually gave way to fine art, painting.” PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS
LOCAL ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
“Lyric”
“Absorb”
Shiela: What are the tools you make use of? What medium do you paint with? Katie: “I adore Golden acrylic paint on canvas. With brushes!” Shiela: How do you arrive at your subject matter? How do you decide on the names of your pieces? Katie: “Frequently, I stand before a blank canvas; closing my eyes and opening my heart to music, thoughts and memories. The forms and images come quickly. I also often draw my inspirations for my paintings from sketches placed into my sketchbook. The names of the paintings nearly always come first – as I’m regularly coming up with arrangements of words (or single words) that I think would make a great title. Adding them to my list, I then scan the list and see if any images emerge. Or, once a piece is in process, I look through my lists of words and phrases to see if anything jumps out.”
Shiela: From where do you draw your inspiration? Katie: “I find inspiration around every corner, on a good day. The way light bounces through a window – the curve and springiness of my sons’ bodies – a mother with her child in a public place – an image in a book – a lyric from a song… Most often, I intend to soak in the time I spend with my sons; their faces and voices, and draw from those emotions later when they are asleep and I’m alone in my studio, with my music. Because I am a graphic designer at heart, I am also inspired by logos and design. While designing, I was drawn mostly to logos and brands - the simplicity and power of a single mark or graphic and how it could provoke emotion. I look at each of my paintings as a type of logo and treat them as such as I create them without color – focusing on the composition and balance first and foremost.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

LOCAL ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT Shiela: Does your art have a deeper meaning? Katie: “I’d like to think that my art does and will help women to realize the value they are providing as mothers; the value in spending time; in doing less and being more. A very early piece for me was titled “Life, Then Work” and I feel that way still. My work definitely has a deeper meaning for myself as each piece strives to remind me that I need to enjoy each moment instead of focusing on what I “need” to do next.” Shiela: Is there any specific message you wish to convey with your artwork? Katie: “For me, my work is meant to provoke, to stir feelings, to move memories. To open eyes. I say this because this is what the process does for me – and the experience of creating something based on passion, gut feeling, naked and raw emotion makes me feel like I am doing something important.
Don’t be afraid to ask: for advice, for mentorship, for feedback. Don’t ever feel as though you are less valuable than any other human – get out there and show people what you do – no one is going to come looking for you (or your work).”
“Cling”
Shiela: What are your future plans?
Near daily I hear from someone who has taken out of my paintings what I have carefully put into them - in regard to emotion - and that is the most rewarding element – that I can possibly help another mother to take notice of how her life and the lives of her children, throughout their busy day together, affect each other.”
Katie: “I plan to meet more mothers and fathers – those who feel what I intend to portray. I intend to build more relationships, to learn from as many people as I can, and I look forward to building networks that can help connect others and help ease my work and my message out into the world.
Shiela: What has been the best advice given to you by another artist?
I plan to continue growing as an artist, investing time in a variety of classes and educational materials over the years. The work will grow as my children grow, I know, and I look forward to seeing where it will take me. I know that I love painting emotion and relationships between individuals – in particular the mother/ child relationship.”
Katie: “I paraphrase some advice given to me by Quentin Robbins: If color makes you unsure when beginning a painting, then do not use color! Do the whole painting in brown and white and then add the color as you choose. I took his advice to heart, instantly, and have been working with this technique for several years. I begin each painting in umber and zinc white – finessing form, value and figures. I then add color as it suits me.” Shiela: What advice would you share with an artist starting out? Katie: “Enjoy those who enjoy your work – get to know them and find out how your work can affect them on a positive level. Keep in touch with those who find value in what you do, collect their positive feedback and appreciate them whenever you can for supporting you. 12
“I paint because I must, and it is my desire that another may connect with the images as well.” – Katie m. Berggren My current work stylizes intimate daily moments of life – grabs hold of the tactile and visible affection between mother and child. The new paintings evoke light and texture – playing with how two or more confident figures can fold, bond and tuck together within a whimsical atmosphere of energy and sparkle. The Chewaucan River offers an aesthetically pleasing experience. You can choose to find a rustic secluded area to camp at or a well developed campsite. Marsters Spring Campground sits right on the river, 8 miles west of Paisley, Oregon; it offers 11 campsites (rock fire rings, pit toilets, hand pumped drinking water and a few picnic tables). There are pleasant undeveloped sites along the river amidst the ponderosas, pines and junipers both down and up stream from Marsters. Camping in the area around the Chewaucan River is free. The Chewaucan River is known to be one of the best trout streams in South East Oregon. It is home to the wild redband rainbow and brook trout. Growing Roses? Now is the Time to Show Off Your Rose Growing Skills
LaRue
It has been said that growing roses is a labor of love, because we all put a great deal of effort into their cultivation. It takes a lot of time and energy to grow the perfect rose!
©Studio Lumiére - Ilona
We should all be proud of the roses we grow, proud to share them with others and proud to display them for our family and friends. So how do you show off your skills? Here are three different ways to become a “show-off” and share your rose garden treasures.
1. Display your blooms half open.
Cutting buds that are just half open allows them to continue slowly opening for the next few days. They must have started to open, the tiny, thin green leaves below the bud should have started to curl back, or the process will not continue. This pristine, slowly opening bud can easily become an intriguing talking point. Cut them with a short stem and one clean leaf and use them as individual place settings for your dinner guests, perhaps a different, single color for each place setting. Or use empty votive candle glasses (without the candle that is!) and float a half open miniature rose bud in each glass. This makes a great centerpiece for a dining table especially outside. Or how about floating a large bloom, about two-thirds open, in a large brandy glass? (...with water not brandy of course!) One of the most stunning displays I ever saw was of five pink blooms, not fully open, floating on an almost flat, white smoked glass dish... and the scent wasn’t bad either!
2. Photograph your blooms.
Try taking close-up pictures of your open rose blooms. Morning light is best, and remember to remove any damaged petals first. Two dramatic methods of displaying your rose pictures require fairly large scale prints of, preferably, single booms, which could be printed directly from your computer. One way is to print the picture on to a cloth backing and stretch it across an artists picture frame to make a border-less wall hanging.
The second is to print a large version of your photo but in black and white. This is very dramatic especially in a black frame. Try a Sepia copy for the old historic look.
3. Don’t forget your roses at party time.
You have worked hard in your rose garden, and the results were stunning. What better way to share your success than to “ eat them”! There are recipes for making rose-water which is used in cake-making and punches. There are recipes for rose-jam and rose-hip marmalade as well as rose-hip syrup and tea. All great additions to a Mothers Day tea, by the way! And what about party time gift giving? Dried petals and dried rosebuds make excellent potpourri, petals can enhance paper making and candle making. You can even use your rose petals in making “bath bombs” or moisturizer cremes: and how about making rosary beads? Some great gift ideas and a marvelous way to share your roses. Why don’t you show-off your roses to your friends and relatives. Display them, photograph them, use them for gift giving or even to eat! Share your roses with others. We can show you how to achieve all this. You can do it, we can help. Organic Gardening Articles: http://www.organicgardenarticles.com

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
ZEN FLOW YOGA
The Spirit of Yoga Spirituality can be defined as a sense of connection to something greater than oneself, which includes an emotional experience of religious awe and reverence. Equally important, spirituality influences physical and psychological health. Cultural historian and yogi, William Irwin Thompson once said, “Religion is not identical with spirituality; rather religion is the form spirituality takes in civilization”.
Dana Layon, ERYT Former President of Satsang Yoga and Wellness Now Independent Yoga Instructor
Yoga is not a religion but it can be the most powerful spiritual journey you may ever take in your life. It is a personal practice which brings us closer to our spirit, our inner guide, our intuition, our emotional and spiritual self. By quieting the mind, we hear the most. In its simplest form yoga means union: to unite – bringing mind, body and spirit together. To be present in every moment – whatever it is we are doing: walking our dog, or playing with our kids. Each of us arrives with different intentions: peace, empowerment, strength, guidance or just a great stretch. We come to class, free of distraction and honor our personal intentions for one hour, ultimately connecting with our spirit. Most often, we are too busy to unlock the potential of our mind and spirit. How do we feel? What are we thinking? What is important to us? These thoughts can become overwhelming without deeper examination. We come to yoga to slow down – to breathe deep and focus inward to evaluate. Yoga can bring us closer to our religion through spiritual contemplation if that is our intention. However, yoga can also create openness in our hamstrings that we have never felt before. Yoga can introduce us to the people in our community – creating new relationships. It can make us physically stronger through sun salutations, warrior poses, plank and downward facing dog. Yoga can help reduce our stress and increase our immunity. Yoga can help relieve all over body pain resulting from chronic illness such as arthritis, insomnia and fibormyalgia. It can also help people going through cancer treatments, recovering from a stroke or dealing with cardio vascular issues. In our Western World, we tend to dismiss these healing modalities that have been around for thousands of years. Yoga, massage, acupuncture,

HEALTH AND WELLNESS reiki, reflexology, meditation: they all have merit in healing. They have helped to heal the sick and comfort those with terminal illness. They have helped people become stronger physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Come to yoga with your own personal intention. Erase the misconception that is a religion. Accept that it can elevate your sense self through spiritual meditation. View massage and acupuncture as a healing modality and not a luxury. For those of you who already do this – hoorah for you! You have found a key to spiritual and emotional health.

“This teacher training is so much more than simply learning how to teach yoga. Along with learning how to do and teach asanas (poses), I am learning a lot about myself.” “I am growing in ways that I never imagined. Spiritually. Mentally. Emotionally. Physically. This program not only teaches yoga, but it allows you the space to be honest and open and genuinely challenges you to dig deep and learn about yourself and the true meaning of yoga.” “Along with gaining wonderful tools to teach to yoga poses, I’ve felt a deeper connection to myself, my daughter and my practice. I’m experiencing a “balance” in my life for the first time due to the openness of communication I’ve come to know and use from this training. I’m going into situations where, in the past, I would have been very tense and fragile, but now I go with a feeling of calmness and courage.”

It’s Easier Than You Think:
Tips for Building Healthier Habits When it comes to healthful aging, a preventive approach Between juggling work, soccer practice, ballet and household chores, taking the time to build healthier habits can be a seemingly daunting task for moms. But a new survey reveals a startling misconception. Despite the fact that it’s generally agreed upon that it takes just three to six weeks to form a new habit, the overwhelming majority of respondents think it takes six months or longer. “I want to educate moms and their families about how easy it can be to form new, healthy habits,” says Bob Greene, founder of the Best Life program. “For example, the simple act of swapping a sugared beverage for water is an easy change that can shave calories and add up to big results over time. Replace one typical 12 ounce sugared beverage daily with water and cut 3,650 teaspoons of sugar a year from your diet – that’s 38 pounds of sugar a year.” “We owe it to future generations to be environmentally responsible.”
To help empower families to take it one step at a time, Bob Greene and Nestle Pure Life brand bottled water joined forces to launch the Pure Life / Best Life Challenge at www.purelifebestlife.com to help make families small changes in four key areas: eat right, drink right, get active and get green. Following are a few simple steps that families can take to acquire new healthy habits.
Drink Right • “Exercise is a key ingredient in the formula for living your best life.” 20
• •
Put a water bottle in your kid’s bag before they head off to practice or a game. If your family drinks whole milk now, switch gradually, first to 2 percent and then to 1 percent. Before your workout, drink 8 ounces of water.

FINANCES AND LEGAL
The Business of Business By Scott E.. Nielson, J.D. Attorney at Law
One of the most interesting and exciting parts of my practice is to help people be successful in setting up and running their businesses. Make no mistake about it; how to design your business and how to operate your business are the most important decisions you will make.
Scott E.. Nielson, J.D. Attorney at Law “A Full Service Law Firm” 812F NE 81st Ave., #147 Vancouver WA 98665 (360) 921-5049 NielsonLaw@me.com www.scottn.info
We already know you’re a talented person. In my experience, few people want to suffer for their art – at least for very long. You’ve suffered enough to get to the point where you can strike out on your own to make a living. Maybe your decision was forced onto you because of downsizing at your old company. Maybe you’ve decided on your own. In either case, now is the time for the world to reward you for your talent! Your business will support you financially if you’ll only pay attention to a few serious ideas: What kind of business? It’s important to think ahead to decide how to structure your business. Too many people think: “Well, I’ll hang out a sign and maybe advertise. Lots of people already know me, so I’m ready.” With the help of a lawyer experienced in new businesses, you will want to explore a few basic questions. Who will be the owner or owners of the business? Will I make it a sole proprietorship or a partnership? Should I investigate making it a corporation or a Limited Liability Company? There are several advantages and disadvantages to every answer to each of these questions. In future articles, we’ll look at each in detail. For now, it’s sufficient to understand simply that these questions – and others – need to be discussed with your lawyer in detail. Your future success depends on it! What kind of finances? It’s vital that you treat your business as an entity separate from your personal life. Too many people discover that running their business from their personal checking account is a plan filled with danger.

You must have a separate business account. You must keep separate financial books. You must keep detailed and daily track of every expense and all income. You probably will need to complete separate tax returns, or at least separate calculations. Most people – talented people like yourself – find this mindset difficult to learn. It’s boring! But it’s essential for your business’s health. How will you get your business started? Do you have a fat bank account to keep you going until your cash flow can support the business? Or have you found a way to finance your start-up? It’s a historical fact that many more businesses fail in the first year than succeed. The primary reason for those failures is that the businesses didn’t have enough up-front cash (savings or loans) to PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS

What kind of people? You have heard the phrase, “Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan.” In our context, this means that nobody succeeds alone, but it’s easy to fail if you are alone. Luckily, there are many people who want to help you be a success. The key to your success is to find the right people who are compatible with your personality and talent.

Who will be your financing expert? Who will be your banking expert? Who will keep your financial books up to date? Who will be your management expert? Who will be your marketing expert? Who will design and maintain your internet presence? Who will be your sales expert? This will sound self-serving, but your best option is to find a lawyer who is experienced in all these areas. This is not a common combination, but it is important for you. In my nearly twenty years of practice, I have learned that entrepreneurs have unique ways of looking at the world and individual attitudes about how they earn their livings. This is good – and why I enjoy working with people like you. The right lawyer can help you structure your business life to free you to concentrate on you and your ideas.

Your lawyer will bring together financial people, technical experts, government/regulatory offices, and marketing and management people as your team to protect you and your business. In short, the right team will give you more flexibility to develop your craft and help your business to thrive. But, the cost! The good news is that the costs don’t have to be high. Find a lawyer who knows this area and is willing to work with you as you go along. In a future column, I’ll go into more detail about how to interview your future lawyer. For now, understand that the right lawyer will find a way for you to get the right help. Until next time: Keep those questions coming! Twitter For Business Ever wonder how to use Twitter in your business? By Dotty Scott
Get customers with Twitter. I will be speaking and teaching this topic, please contact me for more information on when and where. If you have ever wondered how to use Twitter in your business effectively then come and learn about some tools and ideas that will make it work for you. Here is a Twitter story taken from an article called Conversational Marketing with Twitter by Kalena Jordan. In February 2009, Utah-based Mexican restaurant “ chain Costa Vida sent a one-day-only offer for a free burrito to its 80 Twitter followers. As part of the promotion, Costa Vida required customers to have an electronic coupon on their mobile phone.
I build better websites for small businesses. Getting your website up and running is just the first step. Marketing your website and services comes next. I also teach people how to market on the Internet effectively.
The burrito was designed to test the effectiveness of leveraging social media websites like Twitter and Facebook in brand building and driving restaurant traffic. However, Costa Vida customers tweeted about the promotion and forwarded the offer to friends via mobile phone. Their followers told their own followers and so on, until more than 2500 people inundated one of Costa Vida’s stores looking for their free burrito.

ROSIE’S RAVES
You Don’t Have a Grandmother Who Quilts? By Rosie Rhine Howard and Dee needed a throw that matched their penny-colored sofa. Dee looked everywhere but couldn’t find the right match or the right design. Cathy loved quilts and wanted a small quilt designed especially for her good friend as a birthday gift. Cori wanted a home-made quilt for her king sized bed but was a business woman and had no time for quilting. Liz wanted a quilt for her sister that expressed her gratitude for having her for a sister. Michelle was expecting soon and wanted a little quilt for her baby what matched her nursery, but she was a computer expert, too busy to quilt. Robin wanted a quilt with a rhino on it for her friend who loves rhinos.
Cathy’s Gift Cathy’s friend was reportedly very kind, feminine and spiritual, so I designed a small pink wall hanging with lovely blue spheres gently rising throughout.
Personal Quilter Needed Each needed a personal quilter. Rhino Quilting came to their rescue: Dee and Howard With a penny in hand, I scoured the fabric store and found the perfect colors for a quilt to match Dee’s sofa.

Cori wanted a quilt that was green and gold and king sized, but not too expensive, so I designed a quilt with larger blocks, cutting the cost in half. PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS
ROSIE’S RAVES Not only was I able to design a lovely wall hanging for Liz’s sister, with colors to match her décor, but added her personal message at the bottom.
Using the colors that Robin suggested, I created a unique gift for Robin at a reasonable price. She was so delighted with the quilt, she ordered matching shams.
Unique Gifts
Sweet Dreams Michelle found the perfect baby jungle quilt to match her baby’s jungle theme in Rhino Quilting’s array of quilts.
Rhino Quilting makes custom quilts because each person is an individual. Store bought quilts can’t address this situation, and many people don’t have a quilter in the family. People get very enthusiastic about having a quilt designed to their very own needs for color, design and size, whether it is for themselves or is a gift for friends and family. These quilts, which can be viewed at www.rhinoquilting. com, are examples of Rosie’s quilts. www.rhinoquilting. com was founded in 2008 to provide custom quilting for those people who do not have a quilter in the family. PARTIES AND ENTERTAINING
Easy Entertaining Are you planning on having guest over? Easy entertaining depends on preparation. Having these items on hand at all times will prepare you for an intimate meal for four or a boisterous gathering of 10. Throwing a party for friends and family should be a joy, not a chore. Always having a few items on hand makes it easy to entertain, no matter how much (or little) time you have to prepare. We all want a simple but gourmet approach to entertaining... we like to wow our friends! Choose a recipe for your occasion. Search the internet for food resources, recipes... Food Network, Martha Stewart, Family Fun, etc or create your own. Keep in mind that you don’t want a recipe that will keep you busy in the kitchen away from your guests all night. Pick one that will allow you to do some (if not most) of the preparations ahead of time. Write down all of the ingredients needed for a complete meal, including an appetizer, beverages and dessert. Dinner parties are primarily about the food and drinks. However, you don’t need to be a chef to create an excellent meal that will wow your guests. When it’s time for dinner, you can enjoy a quick, easy and affordable meal. Remember presentation, present your food in an appealing way, not in the frying pan or pot. Here are some ideas: Click words in red to open the recipe. 28

Turn on the music... with hours and hours of music stored in your MP3 player... create and keep a dinner party playlist with your music. An mp3 dock with speakers makes it easy to play music at a low level in the background for instant atmosphere. Most of us even have Comcast or some type of cable with music stations; pick a smooth jazz or classical station. Do whatever else you can to set an inviting mood. Greet guests immediately upon their arrival. Mingle with your company a bit before returning to the kitchen so they feel welcome.
Keep a few bottles of wine and mixers for cocktails around. Shiraz or Chianti go well with red meat, a bright and flowery Pinot Grigio complements shrimp and seafood and dusky Pinot Noir or Merlot pairs well with poultry dishes. Make sure to have appealing non-alcoholic options, as well, such as sparkling water or soda.
Invite guests to help you with some of the preparations. For example, don’t be afraid to ask someone to attend the grill or stove, carry out items or do anything else you could use help with. This makes them feel like they are really part of the party and often makes everyone feel more at ease.
Shop for your items close to the day of your party so you will have the freshest ingredients. Remember to pick up fresh-cut flowers that will go with your menu and table settings.
Serve dinner and offer a brief explanation of what the meal is. Relax and enjoy your guests. Finish with dessert and more conversation. Consider making coffee if it looks like some might need it; the smell of brewing beans sends a subtle sense message that the night has come to an end. Happy Entertaining.

CUISINE PACIFIC NORTHWEST – GREAT EATS AND DRINKS
EATS Celebrate National Panini Month with bold flavors
The trend of gourmet panini is still hot and people continue to look for ways to duplicate and enjoy the bold flavors of restaurant grilled sandwiches in the comfort of their own home. While there are countless ways to create a warm delicious panino or grilled sandwich, natural cheese serves as the common thread throughout most recipes. Over the years, sandwich making has evolved beyond the simple stacking of ham and process cheese on white bread. Today, delicious fresh ingredients like turkey, sharp provolone and arugula are combined on grilled ciabatta bread to create more memorable gourmet panini. To honor this evolution and the popularity of the panini, Chef Jason Denton, author of “Simple Italian Sandwiches” encourages everyone to celebrate with Sargento in declaring National Panini Month this August by creating their own twist on the classic grilled sandwich. “When I prepare panini, I only use the freshest ingredients and natural cheese in my recipes,” says Denton. “It is important to remember that choosing to cook with deli-quality natural sliced cheeses, like the newly introduced Sargento Sharp Provolone, Vermont Sharp White Cheddar or Reduced Fat Pepper Jack, will offer a greater variety of flavor and complexity to hot grilled sandwiches.” When it comes to key ingredients like cheese, consumers know natural is best. In fact, 82 percent of consumers list natural cheese among their favorite toppings on hot grilled sandwiches, versus only 27 percent that choose process cheese. 32
“In the first bite of a perfectly made hot grilled sandwich, you’ll taste how natural cheese gives panini a creamy texture and full-bodied flavor that process cheese can’t deliver,” says Denton. For the best results, practice these panini tips from Jason Denton:
Fresh ingredients Good ingredients make a great sandwich. For the freshest taste, use seasonal vegetables and a flavorful natural sliced cheese.
Keep it simple When it comes to panini, less is more. Try not to put more than three main ingredients in your panini. This allows all the great flavors to come through and ensure a simply delicious sandwich.
Be patient Patience brings perfection. Lightly cook a fresh ciabatta loaf or roll, so it doesn’t become too brittle, and most importantly, grill your panini slowly. Natural cheese melts more slowly than process cheese, but the result is more than worth the wait of a few minutes. This recipe for Smoked Turkey, Pine Nut Pesto and Sharp Provolone panini created by Jason Denton will show you the delicious difference natural ingredients can make in a grilled sandwich. I love this little cafe! If you have a craving for a panini, this is the place to go in Vancouver. I always order the turkey with provolone and avocado... scrumptious! They have nice panini and soup or salad combos for only $6.50. It is a wonderful little spot to enjoy lunch or a gelato with friends. My husband worked downtown for a while and frequented Dolce Gelato with a friend for lunch. The owner Courtney knows what he orders and knows him by name. Very friendly staff. Italian sodas, coffee, tea and delicious pastries are among their menu. Other lunch items include: Soup of the Day, Bread Bowl, Green Salad, Chef Salad, Quiche, Caprese Calazone and Croissant Sandwiches. This Italian Cafe is cute and cozy, with a nice conversation area which includes a fireplace and sofa. Indoor and outdoor seating. FREE Wi-Fi! It’s a must!

DRINKS Iced coffee
A cool way to entertain this summer Summer and entertaining go hand in hand. But how do you find economical ways to entertain at home while maintaining your own signature style? Anthony Carroll, green coffee expert for Starbucks, suggests entertaining at home with coffee. While many coffees taste great chilled, Carroll recommends high-quality specialty coffees like Kenya or African Kitamu from Starbucks. Both coffees make a wonderful option for serving cold because hints of citrus and floral notes become more pronounced when iced, and pair beautifully with favorite summertime treats. African coffees are especially good over ice, with crisp, caramel notes that pair perfectly with fresh berries or a moist lemon pound cake.

CUISINE PACIFIC NORTHWEST – GREAT EATS AND DRINKS
Sauvignon for the month of August Sauvignon Blanc has the ability to wrap itself around flavors from many cuisines. Its inherent clean acidity acts to cleanse the palate and set you up for the next bite. This crisp acidity is nicely balanced by tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple and mango. New Zealand is known for Sauvignon Blanc’s that push the envelope in terms of bright acidity and tangy, citrus flavors like lemon, lime and grapefruit. Sauvignon wine pairs with any food which you’d enjoy a squeeze of lemon or lime on such as oysters on the half shell or sashimi. Sauvignon Blanc is also a delicious contrast to grilled fish, poultry and vegetables such as peppers, eggplant and mushrooms. It’s a perfect dance partner for tangy cheeses such as fresh goat cheese served either alone or as part of a dish. Mediterranean antipasto or small plate dishes which combine many flavors like salty olives, dried meats such as serrano ham or prosciutto, tangy cheeses like marinated feta and the like are also where these wines shine. Also appealing with the wide range of curries from many cuisines including Indian, South East Asian and even “jerk” preparations from the Caribbean since the acidity brightens and cleans the palate with each bit and sip. This month we paired garlic humus with pita bread sprinkled with feta, grilled lemon pepper chicken and vegetable kabobs, tomato salad with fresh mozzarella balls, a fresh summer watermelon/feta salad with sprigs of mint. For dessert we enjoyed a delicious truffle (honey-lemon tapioca folded into whip cream, layered with lemon cake and fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and sprigs of mint. Mike Tallman: (Age 30 - 50’s). Quick, wise guy, con artist. Must be sympathetic and calculating, but not cold like Roat. In the right situation, he might just change and turn out to be a nice guy. Carlino: (Age 35 - mid 50’s) A real physical presence, not necessarily big, but prefer physically menacing. Carlino is an ex-con not unfamiliar with violence and willing to resort to it. He is a little slow, but gets the job done. More loose cannon then Mike, but not a complete maniac like Roat. Plays “Seargeant Carlino” role through most of the show. Brooklyn or other New York accent preferred. Sam: (Age 30s to 40s) Susy’s Husband - An aspiring professional photographer. Ex-marine. He is brisk, and sometimes short with Susy, but cares a great deal for her and is helping her to cope with her new blindness. PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS
