US Celebrity Chef Carla Hall
explores Victoria Falls, & showcases a passion for all things African.
Her passion for all things African, from people and community, local and fusion cuisine, art, history, and dance – was evident in a four-day cultural immersion experience at the Victoria Falls.
The trip to Zimbabwe began in early 2022, when a friend and colleagueZimbabwean born, makeup artist and entrepreneur, her colleague and close friend Chef Carla Hall, the

Within minutes of touchdown at Victoria Falls airport, Ms Hall joined in dance with the traditional dancers, to the beat of the African drum.
As one observed her African dance moves, not only at the airport but on several other occasions during her Vic Falls holiday, it became apparent that there was more to Miss Hall’s very expert dance moves.
It turns out that Carla Hall has a strong long-standing passion for African dance and has even taken lessons on the art of African dance with an instructor in the USA!
Her passion is infectious. Arriving at Mbano Manor hotel, hotel staff were each greeted with a warm hug. And she toured the Mbano hour of arrival!

tradition, Mbano Manor Hotel welcomed a sister home with a special festive meal. The team hosted a special “Mabiko nanaTete” (Meal with the Sisters) luncheon, which brought together women from different backgrounds, across the community of Victoria Falls to celebrate
food, music, art, and dance. Working together with the Mbano chefs, several community women also showcased some of their favourite traditional dishes for Chef Carla & guests. Starters were served by the hotel poolside. Salads were served in the hotel herb garden.
The main course was an to barbeque cooking. Entertainment included a local high school marimba band, a mbira and dance group.
A hotel public courtyard was dedicated to showcase local ladies with their arts and crafts.
A well-known local barista, Loretta, showcased her local brew, made with local-grown Zimbabwe coffee. Guests for the luncheon included business managers and community partners of the hotel in Victoria Falls.
Another nod to tradition during the luncheon was when Carla Hall was bestowed by the Mbano team with a local name, Zanele, which means “the girls are enough”. “Your visit completes us as sisters”, explained Dr Mati.
For the hotel chefs, another highlight was the following morning, when Carla Halls donned her apron and assisted in cooking
breakfast in the hotel kitchen. Carla also spent time in the Mbano herb and vegetable garden, exploring ideas.
As Dr Mati explained “Today’s global tourist wants to explore local culture and cuisine. Increasingly, there is a shift towards fusion cuisine where chefs combine elements of different culinary traditions from different cultures.
Mbano has embraced this trend and our menu
and traditional meals, or a fusion of both. Our pesto, for example is made from combining a local vegetable – tsunga, with basil – both of which are grown in our herb garden. Locality and sustainability are central themes to our delivery.”
“Chef Carla is someone who I have admired and
follow as a successful black businesswoman in the culinary industry. I am delighted that she “booked that trip” and came all the way from the USA to support a fellow sister. Carla also shared how my story resonated with some of the challenges she faced in her own career journey. Her advice and expertise in the kitchen are something my team will always treasure!”!
In the words of Chef Carla from her personal newsletter: “I am so in awe of the wonderful people, food, culture, and nature that I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying since we landed. I am so happy I said yes to this adventure”.

York Lodge is the perfect place for business travellers who want to be pampered in a luxurious bed and breakfast setting. Nestled in a lush and peaceful garden oasis in the heart of Harare, the lodge offers topclass facilities and service.
The lodge dates back to the 1950s, but it was only in 1998 that the owners, the Wild family, developed it into an accommodation
facility. By 2008 the lodge stood at 12 rooms and by 2023, it had expanded to the current 19 rooms.
On offer are elegant, spacious rooms with large verandas overlooking the gardens, a marvel for guests all year round.
Rooms and communal areas are typical of a large hotel; with the service, personal touch and privacy matching a family-run bed and breakfast facility.
For more than two decades, the three different types of rooms at York Lodge have captivated guests, who have either returned for more memorable stays or recommended them to others. Rooms 1 to 8 make up the oldest wing and are the epitome of old-world charm with high-pressed ceilings,
of a luxurious country cottage. Guests who appreciate this feel, often request these rooms when they book! Number 8, is the original bedroom that dates back to the 1950s.
Rooms 9 to 12 make up the second wing of rooms that were added to the lodge. These spacious and light rooms infuse classic African luxury with country cottages and all the amenities that guests would expect from any luxury accommodation. With free-standing bathtubs garden, four-poster beds, and large private verandas, the rooms at York Lodge offer a more modern take on old-world charm and comfort.
Rooms 13 to 19 form the newest wing of York Lodge, incorporating variations of indigenous woods: jacaranda, teak, mahogany, pine, and cedrela in the large rooms to give it that African welcome and fresh look. These rooms are in keeping with the rest of the lodge: tastefully furnished and welcoming after a long day of work or travel. The entire lodge celebrates Zimbabwe and its heritage local artists.
drive from the city minutes from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, it is perfect for either a discerning business executive or holiday maker.
“We are a familyowned and managed lodge offering personalised luxury accommodation. We keep the visitor numbers small and most of our guests are repeat customers from the executive business fraternity. We host
guests from local and institutions and mining houses. As well as from overseas embassies, corporate and multinational sectors of the economy,” said Sarah Wild, York Lodge’s Manager.
They are also a good stop over for tourists landing in Harare and going to Mana Pools and Hwange.

Bulawayo’s Wedding Venue With
A Touch Of Safa And Wildlife
Step Into The Wild and the Free 2 Be Wild board partnered to create the venue, envisioning a space that blends natural and wild elements with the celebratory elements of a special life event.
The concept was to provide a unique experience to foreign brides who wanted to do something more than just get married. The proceeds from the venue hire go towards Free 2 Be Wild, which allows couples to make a positive contribution to the environment. This has been quite successful for intimate weddings, and has been gaining attention from the local market.
At Free 2 Be Wild, visitors have the opportunity to observe the animals in their natural habitat, with the beautiful sunsets as a backdrop. The semiwild site is a perfect spot for people to appreciate the beauty of these animals and enjoy the wonders of nature.
The charm of this venue lies in its size and setting. Its intimate size creates a close, personal atmosphere, making it perfect for small, cozy weddings. The venue offers a unique backdrop that regular venues cannot replicate, making the wedding a truly special and meaningful experience.
“Step Into The Wild venue is ideal for bridal couples, both locally and from abroad, who want something special and unique with a touch of safari and wildlife,” noted Baye Pigors, Free 2 Be Wild founder. “As a result of Covid, couples are more likely to opt for a less expensive wedding, yet still desire something beautiful. Eloping has become increasingly popular, with the intention of having a more elaborate celebration in the future”.
Step Into The Wild offer a range of packages to suit different budgets - from hiring the venue and taking on the responsibility of organising the day yourself, to the Style Package where the venue is hired and Step Into The Wild will take care of the rest. The Wild Weddings package is the premium option, providing couples with everything they could need; from the venue and cake to background music and a photographer. This package is perfect for the bride who is overseas and wants to be taken care of.
When hiring a venue for your wedding, it is important to be aware of any associated costs. The venue hire usually includes tables, chairs, cutlery, crockery and glassware, but if you have a more elaborate design in mind, you may need to factor in additional hiring costs. You should also be aware of any restrictions on times and numbers and be aware of any cancellation fees that may apply if you need to cancel within a certain time frame.
At Step Into The Wild venue, a generator is available to provide lighting and music. Caterers in the onsite kitchen are able to prepare meals for special occasions. However, it is important to note that as the venue is located within a wildlife sanctuary, there are certain regulations and cut off times that must be followed. Guests must also be mindful of the fact that they are entering the home of various wild animals and must respect their privacy. According to Pigors, this is the most important message.
Although some may not be fond of the size or time limitations of the venue, it has proven to be an excellent choice for small, intimate weddings.
Management of the sanctuary has to take the animals’ needs into account when making decisions, but the uniqueness of the location makes it worth the effort. To provide maximum safety, staff are stationed at the venue to minimize animal interference and to ensure the safety of both animals and visitors.
Guests are limited to the venue and if they wish to explore the sanctuary, they can arrange for a personal guide.
From hosting breakfast meals to school events, the venue offers a wide variety of functions such as lunches, private dinners, and cocktail events.
The management of the venue are continually making changes to ensure that the space is as animal friendly as possible. They are continually looking for ways to improve the venue and keep it fresh and exciting. Their key goal is to keep the venue small, cozy and unique to the Bulawayo area, and to provide guests with the opportunity to experience the incredible work that Free 2 Be Wild sanctuary is doing.
