Unique Eco-Tourism Experiences On The Limpopo River
Text

Nottingham Estate is a privately owned farm located on the banks of the Limpopo River in Zimbabwe.
The farm not only produces quality citrus for export, but it also offers unique ecotourism experiences through their two lodges: Nottingham Retreat and Kuduland Lodge.
The venue may be located outside the traditional tourist hubs of Vic Falls, Kariba, Hwange, and Great Zimbabwe, but it has been well supported by travellers passing through to and from Beitbridge who still find it to be a great stop over “The estate attracts a steady
flow of mostly local clients as the rates are favourable compared to well-known tourist hubs. Guest visits are usually on the weekend or a public holiday, leaving weeknights mostly free,” said Angela Mason, Bookings Manager at Nottingham Estate.
Despite its disconnection from the major tourist areas, most visitors, whether local or international, find it an ideal destination. Perfect for those seeking a de-congested safari and resort experience outside the traditional tourist itinerary.
Accommodation facilities:
Nottingham Retreat provides a tranquil escape from its majestic location adjacent to the scenic Mthilashokwe Dam. Seven kilometres of pristine water offer prime bass and bream fishing, as well as myriad birdlife and wildlife.
The dam is surrounded by baobab, mopane, a variety of other indigenous trees, and numerous rocky outcrops. Wake up to beautiful sunrises and the call of the iconic fish eagle.
The retreat has seven rooms, all air-conditioned waterfront chalets, fitted with a single king-size bed and two three-quarter beds. Guests can sleep between 3 and 4 people.
Couples can share with their children if they are under 12 years of age. Room 8, still on the waterfront and air-
conditioned, is a self-contained chalet with a lounge and kitchenette and 2 bedrooms, sleeping a maximum of 4 people. Room 9 is an air-conditioned, luxury family 3-bedroom chalet with 2 bathrooms (one off the main room), an open-plan kitchen (dining or lounge) area, and a front veranda with a view of the dam and camp grounds.
“Clients can hire a boat with an experienced boat driver who knows where the best fishing spots are,” said
Kuduland Lodge is situated on the banks of the mighty Limpopo River, nestled under a canopy of fever trees and a majestic Nyala tree. Verdant green lawns roll down to the river’s edge, providing a tranquil escape for families and weary travellers. The venue is also ideal for weddings and other functions.
The lodge offers a choice of six airconditioned rooms with two, threequarter beds in each room or five Borrocs rooms, which only have fans, gauze windows, and their own swimming pool. These can sleep four, one person in each of the four, three-quarter beds. Guests can unwind by the pool, overlooking the river, or indulge in delicious meals served in a thatched lapa or under the shade of the Nyala tree.
The camps offer various amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible. “We have a camp cot and high chair for families with toddlers or babies. Due to us having only showers at Kuduland, we do have a toddler / baby basin to use for smaller kids. Please request this when booking. We have two swimming pools, each with a holding capacity of 25 000 litres, and a jumping castle at Kuduland to entertain young children,” said Mason.
The camp allows guests to observe these magnificent creatures up close as they playfully devour discarded oranges. Other wildlife to be encountered, besides elephants, are kudu, impala, baboon, porcupine, eland, and warthog.
“Those are the animals that can be seen feeding at the camp, although we have many more species of animals on the farm. The nights at Fly Camp are alive with the sounds of nature, from the calls of hyenas to the breathtaking spectacle of a starstudded sky. This experience is seasonal, available from May to September,” said the resort’s booking manager.
The viewing of the elephant and other species feeding at Fly Camp does not have an age restriction, but all children need to be supervised by an adult at all times.
Guests should make sure they include the Fly Camp elephant feeding experience when they are booking and confirming accommodation, as Fly Camp is available to camp clients only.
Dining experience and sustainability:
Several dining options are available for memorable stays at the Nottingham Estate Resorts. The chefs make a decision on what they are preparing based on the client’s dietary requirements and the menu options for the day.
Mason revealed plans for the future including expanding their activity packages, which are currently underway. This move will see exciting activities like cycling tracks, brunches out in the bush, and more being introduced. “In the near future, we will offer expanded activities according to the client requests.
All activities will need to be booked in advance so that we can organise accordingly,” she said.
Upgrading the décor at camps to usher in a newer and fresher look is also underway.
An unwavering commitment to sustainability that extends beyond ecotourism is evident. The estate has a rich history of adapting to challenges.
Facing water scarcity, they constructed the Mthilashokwe Dam in 1995 and the Mpande Dam in 2017 to ensure sustainable irrigation practices. To
combat rising electricity costs, they built a 1.5-megawatt solar power station in 2016, showcasing their dedication to renewable energy.
Nottingham Estate has clearly demonstrated a passion for eco-tourism, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of Zimbabwe’s Limpopo River region.

In a landmark event for regional conservation and tourism, Livingstone, Zambia, played host to the inaugural Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA) summit in late May 2024.
Over 400 delegates, including the tourism ministers of the five member countries – Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – converged to assess progress, address challenges, and forge a unified vision for the KAZA TFCA's future.
Established in 2011 through a treaty signed by the member states, the KAZA TFCA is a bold experiment in crossborder collaboration. It encompasses a vast swathe of southern Africa, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife populations, and rich cultural heritage.
Through harmonizing conservation efforts and tourism policies across national borders, the KAZA TFCA aspires to create a seamless wildlife corridor, boost tourism revenue for the region, and ensure the long-term sustainability of its natural treasures.
The summit served as a critical platform to evaluate the strides made since the KAZA TFCA's inception.
Zambia's Tourism Minister, Rodney Sikumba, highlighted the importance of reviewing the progress achieved in implementing the 2011 treaty and the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
These agreements laid the groundwork for the KAZA's ambitious goals, and the summit aimed to identify areas where collaboration could be further strengthened.
One key area of focus was the relaxation of border restrictions for tourists. Currently, navigating between the five KAZA member countries can involve cumbersome visa processes and border crossings.
The summit explored ways to streamline these procedures, potentially through the introduction of a single KAZA visa or a harmonized border crossing system. This would allow tourists to explore the entirety of the KAZA expanse more effortlessly, maximizing their experience and boosting regional tourism revenue.
Outside administrative hurdles, discussions centered on wildlife conservation strategies. The KAZA TFCA is home to iconic species like elephants, lions, and rhinos, facing constant threats from poaching and habitat loss.
The summit aimed to solidify a united front against these threats by fostering information sharing, coordinating antipoaching efforts, and implementing best practices in wildlife management.
The summit further recognized the crucial role that local communities play in the KAZA's success. Ensuring that these communities benefit directly from tourism revenue and conservation initiatives is essential for long-term sustainability.
The discussions explored ways to empower local communities through capacity building programs, promoting cultural tourism experiences managed by local residents, and ensuring equitable distribution of tourism benefits.
The KAZA TFCA holds immense potential for southern Africa. The regional grouping is fostering a thriving tourism industry alongside robust conservation practices, and can become a global model for sustainable development.
The inaugural summit marked a significant step forward in realizing this potential. With continued commitment from member states, collaboration between stakeholders, and innovative solutions, the KAZA TFCA can ensure a future where breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cultures are
New Training Facility To Boost Capacity For Wildlife Conservation In SADC Region
IUCN ESARO launched a new Training Facility for Wildlife Rangers and TFCA Managers at the KAZA Summit, aiming to enhance conservation efforts across the SADC region through the SADC
TFCA Financing Facility.
IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature) Eastern and Southern African Regional Office (ESARO) successfully launched the Training Facility for Wildlife Rangers and TFCA Managers.
The event, held on the sidelines of the KAZA Summit (27 – 31 May 2024), was officiated by Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba.
Attendees included Ministers of Environment and Tourism, or their representatives, from Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—the five KAZA TFCA Partner Countries.
Senior officials from the SADC Secretariat, the German Government, KfW, and conservation organisations working in KAZA TFCA were also present.
The Training Facility and Programme for Wildlife Rangers and TFCA Managers in the SADC Region is a regional initiative designed to provide needsdriven, workplace-related training for wildlife rangers and TFCA managers in specific conservation areas focused on transboundary conservation management.
By joining fragmented wildlife habitats across international boundaries, this programme aims to maintain
biodiversity, enhance the socioeconomic conditions of rural communities through eco- and cultural tourism, and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.
The KAZA Heads of State Summit was the ideal platform for this launch as it is not only the largest TFCA in the SADC region but also the largest terrestrial Transfrontier Conservation Area in the world.
The programme begins with an inception phase from June to December 2024. Implementation will run from 2025 to 2028, during which funding will be disbursed to support the training of rangers and TFCA managers in selected courses to enhance their capacities and competencies.
This programme is part of the broad German Development Cooperation with the SADC Secretariat. The German
Government, through KfW, committed EUR 11 million towards ranger capacities for protected and conserved areas in TFCAs.
The SADC Secretariat is working in partnership with IUCN for implementation of the Training Facility.
The SADC Secretariat remains dedicated to implementing the SADC Protocol on Wildlife and Law Enforcement through various strategies, including the TFCA Programme, Law Enforcement and AntiPoaching (LEAP), and Wildlife-Based Economy Strategies.
These efforts, approved by SADC Ministers in June 2023, underscore the region's commitment to sustainable wildlife management and conservation. This programme contributes towards the implementation of these strategies.
The desired outcomes of this Training Facility include:
• Well-trained Wildlife Managers and Rangers: Ensuring sufficient numbers of capable park management staff, government agencies, communitybased organisations, and local administrations in the SADC region.
• Enhanced Training Venues and Equipment: Providing nearby access to in-field training venues and appropriate equipment for workplace and cost-efficient training.
• Improved Training Infrastructure: Developing adequate infrastructure to improve the provision of workplace-related training in terms of quantity, effectiveness, and efficiency.
• Sustainable Financing Mechanisms: Establishing a mechanism to finance and provide needs-driven, workplace-related training for wildlife management teams in specific conservation areas.
Hon. Rodney Sikumba remarked, “This training comes at an important time as we begin to guide our young men and women in Zambia towards careers as rangers. Effective protected conservation areas are essential for achieving worldclass TFCAs and tourism destinations.
By launching these training facilities for wildlife rangers and TFCA managers, we are sending a clear message that our governments are committed to the welfare of our rangers, who stand on the front lines to protect our natural capital."
SADC Secretariat represented by Domingos Gove noted, "This programme is part of the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030.
It aligns with the Protocol on Wildlife Conservation and Law Enforcement of 1999, which emphasises building national and regional capacity for wildlife management and conservation. This launch represents a significant step towards achieving these goals through cooperative efforts."
KfW Representative Christiane Laibach stated, “We firmly believe that the people that can be trained in the new program are at the core of transfrontier conservation and in the end, key for success. KFW have been involved in training schedules and programs and shaping institutions for some time on behalf of the German government t, starting with the Southern African Wildlife College. And since then, more than 200, 000 rangers and wildlife managers have been trained.”
The German Ambassador to Zambia H.E. Anne Wagner-Mitchell noted, "Germany has long been a committed partner in protecting and preserving wildlife, biodiversity, natural resources, and ecosystem services globally and regionally. Beyond supporting the KAZA TFCA, Germany is involved in various
conservation initiatives in Zambia, including the SADC TFCA Financing Facility, the Legacy Landscape Fund, the IUCN Green List certification, and COVID-19 mitigation funding for TFCAs.
Our holistic approach to conservation includes fostering community-based natural resource management, comanagement arrangements, business models for national parks, promoting tourism and infrastructure development, and developing standards and
procedures for cross-border operations in transfrontier conservation areas."
IUCN ESARO Regional Director Luther Anukur added, "The training programme underscores our commitment to enhancing the capacity of protected and protected area managers, rangers and other stakeholders in the SADC region by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary for effectively conserving and managing these critical landscapes.
We are investing in the long-term sustainability of our natural heritage and the well-being of local communities.
The training programme is an opportunity for all of us to learn from each other, to extend ideas and best practices, and to forge lasting partnerships that will strengthen the resilience of protected areas in the SADC region."

GWM Tank 300 HEV:
A Hybrid SUV for the Zimbabwean Landscape
The Great Wall Motor (GWM) Tank 300 HEV has taken the off-road world by storm. This colossus is no stranger to tough terrain, and with its impressive hybrid powertrain, it offers a compelling package for Zimbabwean drivers seeking both capability and efficiency. Let’s delve into the key features and performance figures of the Tank 300 HEV to see if it’s the perfect fit for your next adventure.
Built to Conquer: The Tank 300 HEV boasts a powerful ladder frame chassis, making it incredibly rigid and perfect for handling the harshest terrains that Zimbabwe has to offer. Its impressive approach, departure, and break-over angles ensure that you can tackle steep inclines, descents, and uneven surfaces with confidence.
Taming the Engine: A real monster lurks within the engine bay. The Tank 300 HEV combines a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. This translates to an impressive power output of 270 horsepower and 640 Nm of torque.
That’s more than enough muscle to conquer any off-road challenge you might encounter in Zimbabwe! But the beauty lies in the hybrid system. When venturing off-road, the petrol engine takes centre stage, providing ample power.
However, during highway commutes or city driving, the electric motor can take over, offering excellent fuel efficiency and reduced emissions – a welcome feature for the environment. Let’s not forget it’s impressive fuel efficiency of 8.4Litres per 100km that will have you reaching for your wallet less at service stations.
Geared for Adventure: The Tank 300 HEV comes equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission that seamlessly shifts between gears, ensuring a smooth ride on any terrain. Selectable drive modes allow you to optimise the vehicle’s performance for different conditions, whether you’re cruising on the highway to Bulawayo, navigating rocky terrain on the way to a mine, or meandering the roads less travelled while you are on holiday.
But it isn’t all about the outward looks and performance. Open the door and you’re greeted by a sense of rugged refinement. The generous use of soft-touch materials throughout the cabin gives a premium feel that surpasses expectations for a vehicle in this class. The star of the show is the dual-screen infotainment system. Two large 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard – one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for the central touchscreen.
The instrument cluster offers a customisable layout, allowing you to prioritise the information you need most, while the touchscreen handles everything from navigation and entertainment to climate control.
The Tank 300 HEV doesn’t skimp on comfort features. Heated and ventilated seats are a welcome addition for long journeys, especially in Zimbabwe’s hot climate. Quilted leather upholstery adds a touch of luxury, while ample legroom and headroom ensure a comfortable ride for both driver and passengers.
Despite its rugged exterior, the Tank 300 HEV’s interior designers haven’t forgotten to have a little fun. Unique touches like the airplane-style gear shifter and the fighter jet-inspired grab handle on the passenger side add a playful character to the cabin.
The Verdict: The GWM Tank 300 HEV is a compelling choice for Zimbabwean drivers seeking a vehicle that can handle anything they throw at it in a surprisingly value minded package. For Zimbabwe, the forum presents a golden opportunity to showcase the unique tapestry of flavours that defines its cuisine.

Grosvenor House is the ultimate in luxury for a comfortable and relaxing stay, guaranteed to make you feel pampered and extra-special. It’s ideally situated at the corner of Ridgeway South and Grosvenor Road in Highlands with easy access to the CDB and to Borrowdale.
It’s so quiet and serene it’s hard to believe that you’re in the centre of bustling Harare. There are a number of top class restaurants and amenities close by, all within easy driving (or taxi) distance.
A high brick wall ensures privacy and security and shelters the lush garden with well-established trees and manicured lawns. The garden also has a sparkling pool and various options for outdoor dining or just chilling with afternoon tea or a sundowner cocktail.
It’s a great place for guests to socialise. The guest house has only a modest number of rooms – eight in total – so every guest is assured of undivided attention from the friendly staff.
Visitors can be confident that all their needs will be amply catered for in a timely and professional manner.
There are three rooms within the main body of the guest house plus five outside rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. The inside rooms have a charming and intimate old world feel enhanced by the carefully curated décor.
The rooms were decorated by the owner/general manager Hayley Oberholzer with assistance from Michelle Davis from MAIA Design Studio, particularly with the soft furnishings like curtains, carpets and cushions, as well as other accessories.
Part of the renovations which the new owners undertook was glassing in the front verandah to increase the public lounge space, as well as adding an inside wood burning fireplace and an outside deck. The dining room ceiling was raised to make the space more spacious and airy.
The bar area was also renovated with custom made furniture. The bar operates on an honesty system so guests can help themselves to drinks at any time. There’s a wide variety of spirits, wine, beers and liqueurs – both local and imported - available for the most discerning guests.
The rooms have either a private courtyard or views of the pool and garden. Room number 6 is a very spacious double room and can be booked as a family room with extra beds for children, on request. It was converted from an old existing barn which was a bit run down.
Rooms 7 and 8 are the latest additions to the guest house, built in a style that’s sympathetic to the existing structures with Chromadek roofs, sheltered front entrances and private courtyards at the back, all seamlessly integrated into the beautiful gardens.
Each room has been individually designed with its own character and personality, although all are elegant and extremely comfortable. The rooms each have wall heaters and electric blankets for the chilly winter months and extra blankets are stored in the built in cupboards if needed.
For summer months there are overhead fans to keep the rooms cool and also keep the dreaded mosquitos at bay! Personally I find the gentle hum of ceiling fans very soothing and comforting, enough to lull me in to a gentle sleep.
Luxurious linens, fluffy pillows and soft duvets ensure a perfect night’s rest. Amenities include in-room tea and coffee making facilities, private digital safes, DStv, high speed Wi-Fi and laundry services as well as airport transfers.
Full board includes bed and breakfast – a real treat for guests. Breakfast is served from 6.30 to 9.30 and guests can choose from a continental style meal that includes homemade pastries, biscuits and granola, or a full English breakfast freshly prepared to guests specifications. And of course there’s fruit juice and lashings of tea or coffee included.
Tripadvisor has awarded Grosvenor House an exceptional five stars and one of their reviewers has described the food as ‘out of this world’. High praise indeed from an international reviewer.
Grosvenor House is happy to accommodate guests’ wishes and can also provide a full sit down lunch or a picnic lunch if requested in time.
Guests at the lodge can also invite friends, family and associates to join in their meal. The guest house can provide deluxe room service if guests prefer to take their meals in their rooms.
Two world class chefs oversee all the food produced as well as assisting Hayley in the serving and presentation of the food. The kitchen functions mostly on gas.
Dinner is by arrangement and guest can order in the morning for their evening meal. Grosvenor’s two high end chefs can cater to any dietary requirements and preferences, including halaal, kosher, piscatarian, vegetarian or vegan. Dinner is generally a set menu.
The whole complex can function off-grid with an extensive solar power set up and an additional generator for emergencies.
Water is supplied from a borehole and stored in an array of tanks for the guests’ needs as well as for cooking and cleaning.
Visitors will never be without water or power – an important consideration in Harare these days – all designed to create the ultimate luxurious and comfortable experience.
A visit to Grosvenor House is an unforgettable experience which guests will remember – as certified by the fact that many of the guests are returning customers.
