G DI: Building Dreams on the water
Text by Michael Nott | Photos courtesy of GDI
GDI was established in 1957 as a small family business, by Georges Demblon, initially doing sheet metal and switchboard fabrication.
The expertise gained in detailed sheet metal work led the company to successfully expand into the building of kapenta rigs, in 1984, for the growing market in Kariba.
As a logical extension of their boat building enterprises, GDI further expanded into designing and manufacturing a wide range of boats from weekend runarounds to luxury, high end houseboats and river cruisers.
In 2020, GDI diversified further to incorporate Solar Solutions which provides energy systems for boats that are eco-friendly and sustainable.
Shortly after leaving school in the early 80s, Gerard, Georges’ son, joined the family business and worked his way up through the company from the lowest position, through every department, to become the managing director in 1995. On the way he gained an in-depth understanding of every aspect of the business, and now has years of practical experience and a wealth of hard earned knowledge.
GDI are now the industry leaders in the custom design and construction of houseboats and river cruisers from fairly modest projects to ultra high-end luxury vessels.
With a history of over 38 years in the industry, GDI has manufactured over 100 large houseboats and cruisers as well as hundreds of smaller boats, each custom designed to the owners specifications.
Through their meticulous attention to detail GDI has established a great reputation both locally and internationally.
GDI is the secret behind countless unforgettable vacation experiences for travellers and tourists from around the world – always keeping in mind both the comfort, and most importantly, the safety and well-being of the passengers.
Their vessels are specifically designed with Southern Africa’s unique conditions in mind.
Similar European boats, for example, are designed to be warm and cosy, while in Zimbabwe GDI designs boats to keep passengers cool (in temperatures
that can reach up to 40 degrees) with shaded decks, natural cross ventilation and air conditioned rooms. Most of the bigger boats have Jacuzzis or plunge pools on board so passengers can relax and cool off in style and safety.
Whether it’s a monohull, a catamaran or a shallow draft hull, each boat is designed for the ideal performance in the place where it is intended to be enjoyed.
A boat planned to sail on the river at Victoria Falls needs very different specifications to a houseboat on Kariba.
Therefore each design needs to incorporate many factors such as water current, prevailing weather conditions, water depth, and mooring facilities. Weight distribution is also crucial to the vessel’s stability and safety.
Consequently careful attention is paid to the weight and placement of every section of material, every piece of engineering, all appliances, interior decor and a host of other considerations.
All the materials are selected to be of marine quality – marine quality steel and timber – to withstand the corrosive, hot and humid conditions and ensure the longevity of the structure.
GDI also takes into account the transportation of the vessels to their intended destination from the factory. Factors like weight, height, length and width are carefully considered to allow for road access.
To accommodate height restrictions on the road, all larger boats are constructed so that the top deck can be detached and then reassembled on site.
Their design, engineering and manufacturing processes are accomplished by a highly skilled and experienced team of experts with Gerard overseeing each and every detail.
They also specify and source the correct size and type of engines needed to power each boat, favouring Volvo engines which have very strict standards, limiting emissions and pollution.
As the world is moving towards greener and eco-friendly awareness GDI is rapidly following suit. Through SOLAR Solutions, headed up by Ryan Demblon, they are able to supply and install solar inverter systems to replace the old, noisy and polluting diesel generators.
On some of the latest vessels, GDI has on board water purification plants utilising water directly from the Lake, as well as environmentally conscious treatment for black water waste, so passengers can be assured that their travel experience is kind to the ecology.
In addition, GDI supplies a superior interior décor service with careful attention to the smallest detail including the interior layout, kitchen and bathroom designs with top of the range fittings, paint colours and finishes, furniture and accessories – right down to the linens and soft furnishings. They even cater for the passengers’ entertainment with a selection of books and board games.
DStv can be installed on the boats with self-seeking and self-tracking or manual systems. Interior design for boats is different to residential design; for example, there can’t be low hanging pendant lights that would swing around in a storm and all decor items need to be fixed down for safety.
As well as manufacturing and fitting out some of the most iconic boats in Kariba, Victoria Falls and the region, GDI also provides maintenance, repair and renovation services. They have recently renovated and refurbished the Nyami Nyami houseboat including all new, updated décor.
The legendary African Dream was recently hauled out of the water on rollers to allow for maintenance to the hull. GDI is currently constructing a huge dry dock for export, so boats can be lifted out of the water for inspections and maintenance.
Just a few of the most well-known and luxurious vessels manufactured by GDI include the African Dream and the Zimbabwean Dream, both owned and managed by the prestigious Croisi Europe establishment.
The boats are booked out with back to back charters for months in advance. Other vessels include the African Queen, the Lady Livingston based in Zambia, as well as the Zambezi Explorer in Victoria Falls, renowned for sunset and dinner cruises.
GDI creates dreams and magic for unforgettable holiday experiences from the relatively simple to the most luxurious. They have made an invaluable contribution to the tourism industry in Victoria Falls, Kariba and the Southern African region.

Discovery Wellness Lounge:

The inspiration behind the creation of Discovery Wellness Lounge at Robert Mugabe International Airport stems from its sister company, Discovery Ambulance Services, a renowned provider of emergency medical services dedicated to delivering top-tier care, had established a strong market presence.
This success encouraged the founders to venture into the wellness industry, establishing a business within the airport’s new International Departures Wing. This extension of their services offers wellness amenities to both premium and non-premium members.
“Our vision aligns with Zimbabwe’s goal of achieving middle-class status by 2030, leaving no place behind.

Munowenyu believes the wellness industry in Zimbabwe is thriving and poised for significant growth in Southern Africa over the next five years. A Safari Guide For The Discerning Traveler To Mana Pools
Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, beckons with its untamed beauty, diverse wildlife, and unparalleled remoteness. Here's your comprehensive guide to crafting an unforgettable safari experience in this haven for nature enthusiasts:
Planning Your Safari:
When to Go: The dry season (April to October) is ideal for spotting wildlife as animals congregate around shrinking waterholes. However, the green season (November to March) offers lush landscapes and birding opportunities.
Accommodation: Mana Pools offers a range of camps, from rustic bush camps to luxurious tented accommodations. Consider your budget, preferred level of comfort, and desired location within the park.
Permits & Visas: Secure your park entry permits in advance. Visa requirements vary by nationality, so research Zimbabwe's visa policy well before your trip.
What to Pac Clothing: Pack neutral-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants for sun protection and warding off insects. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes. Evenings can be cool, so pack a light fleece or sweater.
Mana Pools Safari Experience: Game Drives: Embark on thrilling game drives led by experienced guides. Explore the park's diverse landscapes, spotting iconic animals like elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and zebras. Be awestruck by the powerful presence of Nile crocodiles basking on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River.
Safari Essentials:
A good pair of binoculars is a must to witness wildlife in detail. Don't forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.
Photography Gear: If you're a photography enthusiast, pack a camera with a telephoto lens to capture wildlife moments. A dust cover for your camera is also recommended.
Walking Safaris: For a more immersive experience, opt for guided walking safaris. Traverse the bush on foot, learning about the intricate web of life within the ecosystem. Observe smaller creatures, insects, and birdlife often missed from a vehicle.
Canoeing Safaris: Mana Pools offers a unique opportunity to explore on the water. Canoe safaris along the Zambezi River provide a different perspective of the park. Witness wildlife coming down to drink, and hippos basking in the shallows.
Non-Wildlife Activities:
Birdwatching: Mana Pools is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 400 recorded species. Look out for iconic African birds like African fish eagles, lilac-breasted rollers, and wattled cranes.
Fishing: The Zambezi River is a haven for anglers. Catch legendary tigerfish, known for their aggressive fights, or reel in a hefty bream. Remember to obtain the necessary fishing permits beforehand.
Cultural Experiences: Explore the cultural heritage of the area by visiting a local village and learning about the traditions of the people who have lived alongside these lands for generations.
Responsible Tourism:
Respect Wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from animals and follow your guide's instructions. Avoid loud noises or disruptive behaviour that could startle wildlife.
Minimize Impact: Practice responsible waste disposal and minimize your environmental footprint. Opt for eco-friendly lodges that support conservation efforts.
Community Support: Consider purchasing souvenirs from local craft markets, supporting the communities that call Mana Pools home.
Mana Pools offers an unforgettable safari experience, allowing you to witness the wonders of Africa in their raw and untamed beauty. Following these guidelines, can ensure a responsible and enriching adventure that leaves a positive impact.

Amplifying The Voices Of Female Wildlife Rangers
Text

World Female Ranger Week, the pioneering global awareness week, spearheaded by international NGO, How Many Elephants (HME) celebrates and supports female wildlife rangers. Women rangers are bold, changing the game and paving the way for women to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation, but they need allies.
by
| Photos by Holly Budge and James Eades and CWF
Champions:
Building on their success of World Female Ranger Week last year, reaching over 500 million viewers worldwide, this year’s event was set to be even bigger. There were be online and live events, global media interviews, plus a fundraising platform to raise vital funds for the rangers worldwide.
As champions of wildlife conservation, role models, educators and beacons of hope, female
rangers are not only transforming attitudes towards the role of women around the world; they are showing the capabilities and success of females in traditionally male roles. However, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. With women being natural communicators, protectors and investing their earned income in their families, bringing gender equality into the workforce is enhancing community conservation efforts and relationships.
Solutions:
The founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week, Holly Budge says, "Having patrolled with multiple ranger teams across Africa, I've seen first-hand how these bold women are impacting lives; protecting wildlife, uplifting communities and empowering other women. WFRW highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation. My team and I will continue collating gender-specific data about female rangers globally, enabling us to identify their needs, find tangible solutions and help build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes; for female rangers and conservation as a whole."The pandemic crippled tourism and funding for conservation projects globally. The lack of tourists visiting national parks led to many rangers losing their jobs or having significant salary cuts. The knock-on effect of this was huge. For example, one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. Additionally, reduced vigilance in tourist hotspots left wildlife even more vulnerable to poaching.
Stigma:
The often-challenging work of rangers is paramount right now. Day and night, female rangers patrol wilderness areas, monitor wildlife, seize snares, work with communities and in some cases, arrest poachers, all to protect nature. Some rangers are away from their families for long periods, sometimes facing workplace security issues and battling social stigma.
Many of these women have overcome adversity, poverty, and marginalisation. Becoming a ranger has empowered them, turned them into breadwinners and property owners, and has allowed them access to higher education and muchneeded healthcare.
Conflict:
Female rangers work in human elephant conflict zones, where large populations of elephants exist, like in Hwange National Park, where around 45,000 elephants roam freely, sometimes coming into close contact with local communities.
Human elephant conflict arises when elephants are forced into human settlements in search of food, water, or space, sometimes leading to the destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and even fatalities. For communities living on the fringes of protected areas like Hwange, the stakes are incredibly high. How Many Elephants is deeply committed to working towards a future where women and men work side by side to safeguard the planet’s precious biodiversity.
‘I’ve seen first-hand how female rangers are impacting lives through education. As role models, educators and beacons of hope, female rangers are transforming attitudes towards the role of women within their communities and around the world,” said Holly.
Impact:
In Hwange, the newest female recruits have already made a big impact. Their integration into the ranger units has brought fresh perspectives and new skills, supporting efforts to mitigate Human-Elephant Conflict.
The training for female rangers is as tough and thorough as it is for their male counterparts. It includes ‘Lala Vuka’ walking patrols, where the rangers carry their supplies and log natural springs for water sources testing their physical and mental endurance.
Holly and her team have identified over 4500 female rangers in 18 African countries so far, and over 5500 female rangers around the world.
“Investing in women and girls has far-reaching benefits for communities and countries. By involving women in conservation efforts, stronger, more resilient communities are built, better equipped to face the challenges of climate change and human-wildlife conflict,” says Holly. WFRW Ambassador, Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka from Uganda, says “I’m delighted to support World Female Ranger Week. Gender equity in the conservation arena is such an important and prevalent topic. There is still much work to do but World Female Ranger Week plays a key role in raising awareness of the work of female rangers and women in conversation in the broader picture.”
HME welcomes strategic partnerships to expand the campaign's reach to strengthen the support of female rangers.
Sustainable tourism in Zimbabwe A Better Way To Enjoy Your Travel
Sustainable tourism is a fairly recent concept; it’s very different to the older concept of tourism whereby travellers would stay in luxury accommodation, view the sites (usually with a tour guide) and have very little contact with the local people, culture lifestyle and food.
According to the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sustainable tourism “refers to the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions”. Similarly, the World Tourism
Text by Michael Nott
Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities".
Closely linked, but subtly different, are Ecotourism and Responsible Travel. Ecotourism is a specialised segment of tourism in natural areas while Responsible Travel refers to the behaviour and actions of travellers that has a positive impact for the destination and the locals.
It has been said that the three pillars of sustainable tourism are people, planet and profit. People refers to the whole of the local society and culture including those within the tourism industry and outside it affected by tourism.
It refers to decent accommodation both for workers and the surrounding
community, fair wages, and suitable training and development and good labour relationships. Planet refers to environmental issues like minimal pollution, wise use of resources, sourcing and supporting local suppliers, recycling and waste management. Profit refers to the financial viability of the tourism business so that fair wages can be paid and local industries supported for the benefit of the community.
Tourism with a conscience can support schools, clinics and local infrastructure, provided funds are available. All forms of tourism have the potential to be sustainable (and profitable) if planned, developed and managed properly. Furthermore, sustainable tourism can enhance and enrich the tourists’ experience.
The Zimbabwean economy benefits greatly from both local and international tourism and postCovid the tourism industry is once again booming but many travellers are looking for a different type of experience. African Bush Camps in conjunction with the African Bush Camps Foundation offers truly sustainable tourism options. The organisation was founded in 2006 by Beks Ndlovu, a Zimbabwean professional guide with the aim of providing unique, tailor made safari experiences that are sustainable and benefit local communities and the environment.
African Bush Camps operate across Zambia and Botswana with their main focus being Zimbabwe. Most of their camp sites are found around Zimbabwe’s two World Heritage sites, Victoria Falls and Mana Pools, and they also have camps in Matusadona (Lake Kariba) and Matopos. Their award winning collection of lodges and camps offer authentic safari experiences as well as luxury accommodation for the most discerning traveller.
The Foundation aims to create sustainable solutions for the neighbouring communities through projects that support and enable them as well as the preservation and enhancement of surrounding wildlife areas and natural landscape through conservation programmes.
Projects deal with local issues like food scarcity through agricultural training, dealing with unemployment through education and supporting school infrastructure, improved health services, human- and wildlife coexistence, poaching and conservation.
The Foundation is funded by the African Bush Camps safaris whereby for every night spent in camp USD10 is contributed to the Foundation’s operating costs. They have also partnered with various travel agents and safari operators as well as conservation communities who assist with the implementation of projects, and other NGOs including The Global Development based in Australia for international funding.

Exploring The Unique Art World Of Zimbabwe A Must See Experience For
Text by Michael Nott
For tourists, both local and international, Zimbabwe has a lot more offer than stunning landscapes and fascinating wildlife. There’s a wealth of art, culture and heritage to explore in order to get the true flavour of this extraordinary country and its people.
For international travellers, visits to the many amazing art galleries can really enhance their experience and make their tour so much richer and their understanding of the country much deeper. Here’s just a small selection of the best ‘must see’ art experiences.
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) has its home at 20 Julius Nyerere Road in the heart of Harare. Established in 1957 the National Gallery’s main aim is, “to preserve, conserve, research, and publish the artworks collections for the education of present and future generations of Zimbabwe” They have a notable collection of art works from all over the world as well a comprehensive collection of traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean and African paintings, sculptures and craft work, undoubtedly the best in the country.
The NGZ has a branch in Bulawayo, situated in the historic Douslin House,
Travellers
an outstanding example of colonial architecture, on the corner of Leopold Takawira and Main Street. Apart from the exhibitions there are artists’ studios where viewers can watch artists at work.
There’s a branch in Mutare opened in 1999 in another historic building, Kopje House, built in 1897. It exhibits works on loan from Harare as well as an interesting selection of paintings sculptures and crafts from local artists, giving them a platform to get their work recognised. In 2011 the NGZ acquired Tengenenge – a community set up of artists living, working, exhibiting and selling stone sculptures. Its situated in Guruve District about 130 kms north of Harare.
It was established in 1966 and over the years many internationally renowned sculptures have lived and worked there. Well worth the visit especially for international tourist looking for a truly Zimbabwean experience and the chance to buy original artworks.
The latest project of NGZ is the establishment of a gallery in Victoria Falls at stand 4224 in Chinotimba Township. There a number of artists and craftsmen in Victoria Falls who will now have the opportunity to display and sell their work in a more formal environment. It’s also a chance for tourists to experience township life.
Also in Harare is the First Floor Gallery, ironically situated on second floor of the Karigamombe Centre in heart of the CBD at 53 Samora Machel Avenue. They also have a branch in Victoria Falls at the Elephants Walk Complex. The gallery is artist run and apart from ever changing exhibitions it also hosts events like film, poetry and music.
It is dedicated to supporting and mentoring upcoming Zimbabwean artists, many of whom don’t get the chance to exhibit anywhere else.
Village Unhu is a unique art gallery situated at 1 Rowland Square in Milton Park.
The ‘Village’ part of the name explains that it’s more than an exhibition space, it’s a community of artists working together to support each other. ‘Unhu” refers to a social philosophy of mutual assistance, trust and sharing. Village Unhu collaborates with other galleries (like First Floor Gallery and Mbare Art Space) and institutions on mutually beneficial projects both as consultants and participants.
The gallery also functions as the studio for co-founder Misheck Masamvu who has exhibited internationally and is considered part of the Goodman Gallery family. Village Unhu has recently exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Fair and the Latitude Art Fair. They describe their mandate as a celebration of existence, diversity and humanity.
Apart from exhibitions they conduct workshops, training, art lessons and artist residencies. They have worked in conjunction with international organisations like the Goethe Institute, Alliance Francais, the EU, the British Council, the Spanish Embassy and Pro Helvetia.
They work with other artists including painters, photographers, sculptors and multi-media practitioners to set up and curate exhibitions at their own space or at other galleries.
It’s a creative space available for many different functions –performance art, poetry reading, dinners or even fashion shows. Recently they have been in the process of establishing a new ‘Village” at the old Drifters Lodge just outside Mutare.
The Mutare branch will become the new headquarters but the Harare site will continue to operate as a satellite venue. If you’re touring the Eastern Highlands or en route to Mutare the new venue is a great space to stop over, view the art on offer and refresh yourself.
Among the many other galleries in Harare the most recently opened is Art84 at 84 Pendennis Road in Mount Pleasant. Apart from changing exhibitions, mostly by local artists, they offer framing, art lessons, art supplies and a great coffee shop.
In Victoria Falls you’ll find the Prime Art Gallery, specialising in art work made from recycled materials, the Tami Walker Gallery, offering wildlife and landscape photography, the AVAC Art Gallery, specialising in soap stone sculpture, the Nicole Sanderson Gallery supplying original paintings, prints and wallpaper and the Victoria Falls Art Gallery exhibiting the best upcoming local artists.
These are just a few of the many galleries across the country – there are too many to mention them all. Suffice to say that wherever you travel to in Zimbabwe there are amazing artists and art works to be discovered.
Series Of Comfy Beds Wrap Up Of Restapedic's
Text by Martin Chemhere
After previously taking a closer look at the Firm and Medium beds, the focus is on the third and last bed brand known as Dream Wave. This bed sees Restapedic Bedding up the stakes in their tradition of bringing to the market, innovative sleeping and lifestyle solutions.
Special:
The different bed styles from Restapedic have different firmness ratios to suit the client’s sleeping style.
The Dream Wave bed is suited to side sleepers as its plushness supports the hips and spine. It features various comfort layers to support and mould to your body shape. It's important, to note that the type of materials used in the manufacture of any bed determines its sleep quality.
Therefore, there are specific materials that have been used in the comfort layers of the Dream Wave bed.
The materials provide superior body contouring and include a pocket spring system for optimal support and pressure relief, a copper gel-infused pillow top mattress, and a quilted cotton top for a soft and breathable sleeping surface.
“The design of the Dream Wave bed differs from other beds in terms of firmness and support, contributing to its own uniqueness in comfort. This bed offers optimal support and pressure relief while promoting joint relief. The quilted top offers a breathable surface that’s designed to give you a restful night's sleep,” said Denise Collett, Sales Manager.
She highlighted that beyond side sleepers, there are other sleeping styles that might benefit from the plushness of this particular bed, but this largely depends on the sleeping style of an individual.
Sleeping style examples:
Stomach sleepers, which is not recommended as it can cause neck and back pain, as well as increase the risk of sleep apnea (a sleep-related breathing disorder), would greatly benefit from the Dream Wave range as it helps with full body support.
Back sleepers, which can help relieve different types of pain while also taking pressure off your spine and promoting good spinal alignment, would see many back sleepers experience better sleep and continued back support.
Dream Wave bed features:
The Dream Wave bed offers pressure relief features specifically for the hips and spine. There are pressure relief features that help with joint health and exceptional support that can see the hips and spine benefiting greatly. The bed addresses common concerns side sleepers might have, such as shoulder or neck pain. It offers optimal support, as side sleeping is best for decreasing snoring and alleviating joint and back pain.
This would be the best bed for side sleepers due to its focus mainly on joint health. Another key feature is the core construction of the bed, which contributes to the overall comfort and support. The construction process includes a pocket spring structure, a copper gel-infused pillow top, giving the best of both worlds, and a quilted cotton top for a breathable sleeping surface.
Bed sizes and materials:
The beds come in two sizes, queen and king, to accommodate various sleeping arrangements.“Various kinds of mattress covers or toppers are recommended for the bed to optimise its lifespan. Typically, mattress toppers last on average between 3-5 years, and so our pillow top has always exceeded the average lifespan of our beds. With this particular line, we take pride in our 8-year warranty,” said Collett. Restapedic ensures the quality and durability of the materials used in the Dream Wave bed. The manufacturer only uses the best materials and craftsmanship for our beds, we ensure we have used the best elements from start to finish, from the timber to the trims.
The market success and popularity of the Dream Wave bed have not only been phenomenal but also ground-breaking in the history of sales at Restapedic Bedding. Customer reviews or ratings available provide insights into the user experience of the bed.
“We have reviews that go as far as testimonies on Facebook regarding our Dream Wave bed. We sold out on the range within the first two weeks of its debut. We have customers that have referred others to purchase that particular bed,” noted the sales manager.
Potential customers can find more information about the Dream Wave bed, including authorised retailers or online stores. They can visit the official Facebook page and website for a deeper insight into where they are located, where the bed can be found, and how much they go for.
6 Takeaways from McKinseys
On Tourism and Hospitality 2024 Report
Text by Farai Chaka
Global strategy and management consulting firm, McKinsey’s 2024 report on global tourism and hospitality offers an exhaustive overview of the industry's current trends, challenges and opportunities.
The report points out several key insights that are pivotal for stakeholders aiming to navigate the evolving landscape of travel and hospitality worldwide.
Domestic and Intra-Regional Travel Dominates
Despite the allure of international travel, the bulk of travel spending remains close to home. Domestic and intra-regional travel represent significant opportunities for growth.
Travellers are increasingly looking to explore local gems and nearby countries, making it essential for stakeholders to create offerings that cater to these preferences. Strategies to capitalise on this trend include promoting lesserknown local destinations and making sure travel experiences are seamless across neighbouring regions.
Emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, India and Southeast Asia are becoming major sources of outbound tourism. This shift necessitates targeted marketing strategies and infrastructure development to attract these new demographics. Established destinations need to innovate and tailor their offerings to meet the expectations of these diverse and tech-savvy travellers.
Evolving Luxury Travel
The demand for luxury travel is growing faster than any other segment, particularly in Asia. Luxury travellers today are looking for personalised and unique experiences rather than standardised offerings. This trend highlights the importance of segmenting the luxury market by age, nationality, and net worth to better understand and cater to varying preferences and behaviours.
Sustainability and Overcrowding
As tourism continues to grow, managing overcrowding and enforcing sustainable practices are becoming critical. Destinations must develop and invest in strategies to handle large tourist flows without compromising their natural and cultural heritage. This includes improving infrastructure, enhancing data collection and analysis capabilities and training a tourism-ready workforce.
Technological Integration
Technology is playing a crucial role in modernising the tourism experience. From facilitating seamless travel arrangements to enhancing the personalisation of travel experiences, leveraging technology can significantly improve customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Tourism stakeholders must invest in tech-driven solutions to stay competitive and meet the expectations of contemporary travellers.
Strategic Collaborations
The report also emphasises the importance of collaboration across the tourism ecosystem. By working together, different sectors within the industry can create more cohesive and attractive travel experiences.
This approach not only adds to the appeal of destinations but also drives innovation and growth within the industry.
McKinsey’s 2024 report highlights a transformative period for the tourism and hospitality industry, driven by shifts in traveller preferences, emerging markets and technological advancements.
By focusing on domestic and intra-regional travel, targeting new source markets, evolving luxury travel experiences, promoting sustainability, integrating technology and promoting strategic collaborations, stakeholders can manage to effectively navigate this continuously changing industry and drive future growth.
