The Luxurious Transformation of The Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre luxury suites

-

Where African Heritage Meets Modern Elegance in the Heart of Harare"

Nestled at the periphery of Harare’s central business district, dominating the city skyline, the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre has long been a symbol of luxury and sophistication. With its recent rooms refashioning, the hotel’s luxury suites, aptly called ‘the diplomatic suites’ have undergone a stunning transformation, embracing an Afro Chic aesthetic that seamlessly blends African heritage with contemporary design.

The result is a collection of suites that are as rich in culture as they are in comfort, offering guests a unique and immersive experience.

The Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre was honoured to have hosted the first guests to enjoy these suites, seven of the Leads of State and their delegations who attended the 44th Ordinary Summit of the SADC Heads of State in August 2024.

The Vision: The refashioning of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre’s luxury diplomatic suites was driven by a desire to create spaces that reflect the essence of Africa while catering to the tastes of today’s discerning traveler.

The design was inspired by the continent’s diverse cultures, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns, resulting in a style that is both authentically African and unmistakably chic.

Large windows provide sweeping views of Harare’s skyline, The suites are designed to be both a retreat and a celebration of Zimbabwean culture, providing an environment where guests can feel truly at home.

Cultural Connection: The Afro Chic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the suites but also creates a deeper connection with the culture and history of Zimbabwe. Each suite features art pieces, celebrating the country’s key tourism wonders such as the mighty Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe. The big five wildlife also feature prominently on the walls. These artworks, combined with the thoughtful design, make each suite a living gallery, offering guests a taste of Zimbabwe’s rich cultural landscape.

Guest Experience: The response from guests has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the suites for their unique blend of luxury and cultural authenticity. “Staying in these suites feels like being wrapped in the warmth and spirit of Africa,” says one recent guest. “It’s a truly special experience that you won’t find anywhere else.”

By embracing an Afro Chic aesthetic, the hotel has created a space that honors Africa’s heritage while providing the utmost in modern comfort.

Whether visiting for business or leisure, guests of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre are invited to indulge in the beauty and elegance of these newly transformed suites—where every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to reflect the soul of Africa.

Moments under theRainbow

with RTG Chief Executive Mr. Tendai Madziwanyika

DZW: Congratulations on the completion of the refurbishment of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre and the Harare International Convention Centre. How much was invested in the refurbishment of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre and HICC Convention Centre?

TM: RTG has invested US$26 million in product refurbishments over the past 5 years, of which US$10 million was invested in the Rainbow Towers Hotel and the Harare International Convention Centre. In the current scope of works a total of US$5 million was utilised for all works to re-do the rooms at the hotel as well as the Harare International Conferencing. In the HICC all carpets and chairs were removed and replaced with modern carpet and chairs. In the hotel three floors were re-done completely including the

Rooms:

The rooms were completely stripped by removing all plastering, all fittings & fixtures, ceilings, flooring, electricals, all plumbing and all furniture.

The rooms were recreated, adding modern features such as bulk heads with downlights, new flooring, complete remodelling of the bathrooms with brand new smart modern features and fixtures that ensure sustainable operations. We replaced all the furniture with brand new contemporary units enveloped by afro-chic décor and artwork.

DZW: What was the scope of the refurbishments?

TM: I prefer to call the work we did – refashioning as it is more holistic in describing the amount of work which was undertaken. The scope of works included the complete refashioning of three floors, where we created six luxury diplomatic suites by collapsing four guest rooms into one Presidential suite. resulting in a luxurious suite comprising 2 bedrooms (both ensuite), one lounge, one dining room, one kitchenette and a visitors bathroom. Over and above the suites we modernised 48 rooms i.e 16 new rooms per each of the three floors.

The Presidential suite has a large bathroom which has a deep soaking bath tub for a rejuvinating retreat to calm the senses and a spacious walk in shower.

Newly refurbished standard room.

Elevators:

The hotel now has four brand new leading global brand; Kone elevators. Our guest elevators now have key-card access control which only gives access to the floor on which the particular guest is booked, thereby enhancing the security and safety of our guests. We are installing two additional brand new elevators for the main kitchen and a service elevator for HICC in the second half of 2024

HICC:

The HICC, for the first time since it was built - was completely revamped and modernized with brand new chairs that are complete with a full set of power charging options including 3-pin, C-type and USB charging ports. In addition the chairs have an inbuilt writing pad for ease of working and new carpets throughout. It is important for me to highlight that the HICC remains the largest single-use amphitheater colosseum-style conferencing venue in Africa. This facility has the capacity to host 4500 delegates. We are now targeting regional and international meetings and conferences as we have a world-class product.

DZW: Will you be doing any further works at the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre and the HICC?

TM: We will be installing two more brand new elevators which will service the main kitchen and the a service elevator for the HICC. These are the first replacements since the hotel was built. Other than this we have now completed the refurbishments for this hotel. However, we maintain a product improvement plan which ensures the hotels are refreshed every 5-7 years.

DZW: What feedback have you received from delegates and particularly Heads of State who stayed at your hotel for the SADC events over the past few weeks?

TM: We have received positive feedback regarding both the product and the service. We are awfully proud of the small role we played in the successful hosting of the 44th SADC Summit. This showcased our abilities to host world-class conferences as a country. We look forward to continued conferencing business going into the future.

DZW: How has been the interest on the newly refurbished rooms?

TM: There is a lot of interest in the new rooms. At 38m2 per standard room and over 150m2 per suite, our rooms remain the largest in Zimbabwe. We are situated in a prime location that offers guests a safe, peaceful stay away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD, with well-manicured gardens where they can enjoy the fresh air without any disturbance or concern for their safety.

DZW: Can you give me an outlook for the hotel and conference centre?

TM: This refashioning of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Convention Centre has breathed new life into the hotel, offering timeless comfort with a modern twist. The new amenities and features make the hotel a top choice for both business and leisure travellers. We are therefore upbeat about the current business performance and the future this hotel. Having successfully hosted the 44th SADC Summit, and looked after seven Heads Of State we are now confident that Zimbabwe is now well-positioned as the premier destination for regional and international meetings and conferences.

Interesting information about some key tourism destinations in Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is where the name of the country comes from. It is the largest ancient structure in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Great Zimbabwe was built between the 11th-15th centuries. The city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe which was a powerful and wealthy trading empire. Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch. Its advanced architecture features towering stone walls, intricate stonework and a complex drainage system. The structure was built without mortar using a technique called “dry-stonewalling”.

The Victoria Falls are one of the seven world wonders and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are 1708 meters wide and can release up to 500 million litres of water per minute at four different heights: 61 meters for Devil’s Cataract, 83 meters for Main Falls, 99 meters for Rainbow Falls, and 98 meters for Eastern Cataract, are the largest waterfalls in the world. In the core zone, eight breathtaking volcanic gorges and numerous islands serve as breeding grounds for four

migratory and endangered bird species, including the Taita Falcon and Black Eagle. The riverine “rainforest” inside the waterfall splash zone is reliant on the preservation of huge amounts of water from the Zambezi River and high humidity due to the spray plume, which reaches a maximum height of 500 meters and is visible from roadways in Bulawayo and Lusaka, respectively, 50 and 30 kilometres away.(UNESCO)

Hwange National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most diverse game reserves covering 14,650 square kilometres The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife including the Big Five – the African elephant, the lion, the buffalo, the leopard rhinoceros. Other animals found in the park are zebras, giraffe, cheetah, hippopotamus, wildebeest, antelopes, monkeys etc. The park is also home to a diverse birdlife such as ostrich, eagles, vultures, pelicans storks and much more. Wild Is Life: A LEGACY FOR FUTURE

This sanctuary is a refuge for a diverse array of animals, from the majestic giraffe to the often-overlooked warthog. Each resident carries a story of hardship, be it injury, abandonment, or orphanhood. A committed team of carers nurture these creatures back to health, their dedication a testament to the sanctuary's ethos.

“As a manner of supporting the work we do, we offer visitors an opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable Sanctuary Experience where they meet and learn about a number of the precious animals in our care including giraffe, lions, pangolin, hyena and elephants,” said Roxy Danckwerts, the visionary founder of Wild is Life Sanctuary.

In 2016, a pivotal partnership with the Zimbabwean government led to the lease of Panda Masuie Forest, a sprawling 34,000-hectare expanse near Victoria Falls. This became the ultimate goal for rehabilitated elephants and other suitable animals. Wild is Life established bomas within the forest, transitional homes for these animals before their much-anticipated return to the wild.

To date, ZEN has rescued a staggering 50 orphaned elephants, with a substantial number currently undergoing rehabilitation at various stages.

The sanctuary's triumph is evident in the 13 elephants successfully and fully rewilded.

Wild is Life's core mission is as clear as it is compassionate: rescue, rehabilitate, and rewild. It is a commitment to offering a second chance, a path back to the wild.

“One by one, we respect each animal in our care as an individual and sentient being. We live by our culture of care, encompassing people, places and animals,” Roxy emphasized.

The journey began the early 1990’s when Roxy recognised a pressing need: a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, and orphaned animals.

What started as a humble backyard refuge for a few kudu, duiker, and mongoose has blossomed into a comprehensive organization rescuing, rehabilitating, and rewilding a vast array of African wildlife.

The establishment of the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery (ZEN) in 2012 marked a significant milestone. With unwavering determination and expert care, Roxy and her team embarked on the heart-wrenching yet rewarding task of rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured elephants. ZEN, the only facility of its kind in Zimbabwe, stands as a beacon of hope for these gentle giants.

Roxy’s vision extended beyond rescue and rehabilitation. She yearned to return these animals to their rightful home: the wild. This dream materialized in 2016 with the partnership to establish a rewilding facility in Panda Masuie Forest.

“This area, almost 1000kms cross country from ZEN, was identified because of its strategic positioning in the KAZA region and we have since established a 25-year lease with Forestry Commission to ensure that the area is fully protected.

This wild and wonderful space ensures that rehabilitated elephants have a safe natural space to call home once they leave the nursery,” she explained.

Under the directorship of Jos Danckwerts, Panda Masuie has transformed into a thriving habitat conservation project, complete with a dedicated anti-poaching unit.

The forest's remarkable recovery, now home to over 50 large mammal species, including endangered ones, is a true reflection of the sanctuary's efforts.

This corridor between Zambezi and Kazuma Pan national parks is crucial for wildlife. Wild is Life's commitment to excellence is mirrored in several key initiatives.

These include a steadfast dedication to creating a sustainable impact on people, places, and animals; the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital and surgical theatre; the expansion of protected zones for elephants; and a relentless pursuit of best practices, collaborations, and research.

Roxy envisions a legacy where future generations connect, embrace, and protect Zimbabwe's natural world, inspiring conservation efforts globally.

Located a short drive from Harare International Air-

port, the Wild is Life Sanctuary is a haven nestled within a working farm and game park. Its 100-hectare savannah woodland is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, kudu, wildebeest, lions, hyena, warthogs, and numerous other species.

The sanctuary is a crucial contributor to wildlife protection in Zimbabwe, rescuing animals from across the

country and safeguarding the vast Panda Masuie Forest. ts dedicated team of 130 staff members works tirelessly to fulfil this mission.

The ZEN Project, generously supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), is a cornerstone of the sanctuary's work. The costs of rehabilitating a single baby elephant, a staggering $10,000 per month, highlight the financial

challenges faced by the organization. Visitor experiences, popular and award-winning, provide crucial support.

Maintaining sufficient funding and recruiting qualified staff are ongoing challenges. However, Wild is Life's unwavering commitment has fostered a loyal and dedicated team.

The sanctuary's impact extends beyond wildlife. It has created stable employment and supports local communities through education, healthcare, and conflict mitigation, ensuring the building of a sustainable future for both people and animals.

Expansion is a key focus, with a new forest restoration project on Lake Kariba and the successful rehabilitation of bird species. Research initiatives, including elephant satellite tracking and camera trap studies, contribute to a deeper understanding of

on wildlife populations and local communities is undeniable. With scores of locally sourced employees, the benefits ripple through the community. The recovery of Panda Masuie's wildlife is an exciting tale of the sanctuary's success.

Poaching and habitat loss remain significant threats. Wild is Life addresses these challenges through employment creation and a robust anti-poaching program.

Financial sustainability is ensured through unwavering commitment to principles and building strong relationships with supporters worldwide.

Wild is Life is more than a sanctuary; it's a beacon of hope for Zimbabwe's wildlife and a symbol of the power of human compassion and dedication.

Welcome to Nottingham Estate Resorts –

Somewhere special to experience

Nottingham Estate is situated on the banks of the mighty Limpopo River which forms the geographical boundary between Zimbabwe and our neighbour South Africa. It’s just outside the border town of Beit Bridge which is one of the busiest border crossings in the region.

The town of Beit Bridge is quite small and accommodation options are relatively limited so the luxurious choices at Nottingham Estate are very tempting for travellers to and from the southern border for an overnight stay to refresh and revive themselves. It’s just a few kilometres off the main highway, and although fairly remote and in a pristine area, can be easily accessed by road without the need for a specialised 4x4 vehicle. It’s a dusty road but in good condition.

Nottingham Retreat offers seven air-conditioned chalets with a fridge and a kettle. There is one chalet with two bedrooms and one with three bedrooms – with en suite bathrooms, kitchenettes, lounge and dining areas and private verandahs. They can accommodate 4 to 6 people comfortably, making it perfect for families or small groups to stay for a while.

It is situated on the waterfront of Mashilichokwe Dam which offers over 7 kilometres of waterfront with prolific bass and bream fishing as well as diverse bird life and other wildlife –including hippos and crocs – so the relatively newly built dam has created its own ecosystem amid natural

While Nottingham Retreat is more sophisticated the other option is Kuduland Lodge which is slightly more rustic. TripAdvisor has awarded Kuduland Lodge a full five stars, so you know it must be up to discerning international standards.

Kuduland Lodge offers six thatched cottages, which are air-conditioned and have en suite bathrooms, a kettle and a fridge. These chalets sleep two people each and there are an additional five chalets with fans and en suite bathrooms which sleep four people. There’s a pool area for chilling out in the heat of the day and meals can be served in the thatched lapa or under the trees.

rocky outcrops and indigenous Mopani and Baobab trees. Apart from the great fishing it’s an unspoilt wildlife paradise. You can bring your own boat or boats are available to hire.

The Fly Camp is a totally unique experience for both local and international travellers. During the citrus season – from May to September – fruit from the farm that has been pulped or is not fit for the market is distributed for the local wildlife to feed on. Herds of up to 300 elephants are often seen relishing the special fruity treat. A variety of other animals, including baboons and antelope also visit the feeding site in large numbers. It’s a oncein-a lifetime opportunity to view the game close up in a safe and comfortable environment. It was originally designed as a viewing and entertainment platform, but with prior booking guests can enjoy a special three course meal on site to add to the unique experience. During the feeding season travellers can also enjoy a tour of the orange factory which is quite fascinating.

At Nottingham Estate Resorts there are many activities available so if you get tired of just chilling out and unwinding you can enjoy sunset cruises on the dam or game drives. The area also has a rich history and heritage for visitors to take in.

There are the visits to the ancient Bushman (or San people) cave sites, grain bins and some of the best examples of prehistoric rock paintings and engravings.

There’s also the remarkably well preserved dinosaur fossils on the nearby Sentinel Ranch which date back millions of years – something truly exceptional to see.

The current history of the Estate dates back to the 1950s when the land was purchased from the then Rhodesian government by the brothers Bertie and Bennie Knott. The land was completely undeveloped and in a fairly arid area so it was not initially deemed suitable

for agriculture. While living in tough conditions the family began clearing land to plant potatoes, melons and squash and to fence off some paddocks for rearing cattle. In 1958 the first citrus trees were planted which are still bearing fruit today. In the same year more permanent houses for the family and farm managers and staff were constructed – some of which were knocked down by the local elephants before they were finished!

The farm only received electricity in 1973 by which time cattle, cotton and wheat farming were becoming established.

The land was passed down through the family over the years – and is still family owned and managed. In 1980, due to the persistent droughts, the family decided to move away from cattle ranching and diversify into game farming.

The first Kuduland Lodges were built, initially just three chalets along the bank of the Limpopo River, and slowly became popular with local and international safari hunters. In 1993 a dam was built on the Mashilichokwe River, a tributary of the Limpopo River, mainly to provide irrigation for the citrus estate. In 2006 Nottingham Retreat was built which consisted of 8 chalets and it quickly became a hidden gem for fishermen.

In 2008 the family moved away from hunting safaris and began developing into eco-tourism for travellers to experience the unspoilt flora and fauna for game viewing, birding, sustainable fishing and an appreciation of the stunning environment.

In 2016 the Estate took on two more development projects to diversify their interests and support the running of the farm. A second dam, named Mpande, was built to provide additional water for the citrus estate as well as clean drinking water for all the households and lodges.

The area is experiencing extended droughts and the Limpopo River is becoming more saline as water levels drop, so the dam is crucial for future water management, especially as demands on the Limpopo River increase. In addition, they have installed a solar power plant to provide electricity for the farm and the various households.

Nottingham Estate is set to prosper and develop more into a bright future – well worth a visit for locals and international tourists. It’s a special destination and offers so many fascinating activities it should be on everyone’s bucket list.

It’s a bit off the beaten path of the usual tourist destinations like Victoria Falls or Kariba or Hwange but well worth the visit.

Navigating the Unexpected:

Essential Travel Considerations for Global Adventures

Traveling to new destinations can be an exhilarating experience, but it's essential to be prepared for the unexpected. A well-planned journey involves more than just packing your bags; it requires careful consideration of potential risks and ensuring access to essential services.

Airport Pharmacies: A Convenient Solution

Travelers may encounter unexpected health issues or require medication while on the road. Airport pharmacies offer a convenient and accessible solution, providing essential medications and healthcare products. Whether you need to replace lost prescriptions or purchase over-the-counter remedies, having a pharmacy readily available at the airport can alleviate stress and ensure your well-being.

Airport Medical Emergency Services: A Lifeline in the Sky

Airports are bustling hubs of activity, and accidents or medical emergencies can occur at any time. Having reliable airport medical emergency services in place is crucial to providing prompt and effective care to travellers who require immediate medical attention. These services can range from basic first aid to advanced medical treatment and evacuation, ensuring that travellers receive the necessary care when they need it most.

Holiday Travel and Medical Insurance: A Safety Net

When traveling, especially to unfamiliar destinations, it's prudent to have comprehensive travel insurance in place. This insurance can cover a wide range of medical expenses, including emergency treatment, hospitalization, and evacuation. Additionally, travel insurance can provide financial protection against lost luggage, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.

Air Road Remote Rescue: A Lifeline for Remote Adventures

For travellers venturing into remote areas, air road remote rescue services are essential. These services can provide rapid assistance in case of accidents, medical emergencies, or other unforeseen situations. Having access to remote rescue teams can be crucial in ensuring timely and effective response, especially in areas with limited medical infrastructure.

A Thoughtful Approach to Travel Planning

Before embarking on a journey, it's essential to conduct thorough research and plan accordingly. Consider the destination's medical facilities, the availability of essential services, and the potential risks associated with your activities. Pack a small firstaid kit, familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers, and inform your loved ones of your travel plans.

By taking these proactive steps and ensuring access to airport medical emergency services, pharmacies, travel insurance, and remote rescue, you can significantly enhance your travel experience and peace of mind. Remember, prevention is key, and being prepared for the unexpected can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.

Essential outdoor gear

As we’re heading into the summer season local and international adventurers are looking at the options of outdoor camping, experiencing the splendour and unspoilt beauty of Zimbabwe.

There are stunning landscapes to explore from Victoria Falls, Kariba, and Mana Pools in the north to the majestic rocky outcrops and the hills of Matopos in the south. Options include Hwange in the west of Zimbabwe to the breath-taking scenery of Nyanga and Bvumba in the east. And in the centre of the country is Antelope Park in Gweru and, of course, Great Zimbabwe which is unique and should be on every traveller’s list. to enjoy your holiday

There are so many exciting and special places to visit and lots to see and enjoy. Camping is a great option to experience the wonders of the country without being stuck in a hotel or lodge. It also gives you the freedom to explore and stay as long as you like, or move on when you’re ready. But whether it’s a one-day hike through the wilderness, a weekend adventure or a longer stay, there is some essential outdoor gear you need to take with you.

hat is recommended as well as sunglasses and sunscreen cream. It’s easy to get sunburnt without even noticing and the results can be painful. Sun protective clothes, like long sleeved shirts and long trousers, are also a good idea. For a longer stay, not just a day trip, include something warm for the evenings. Even if the days are hot the nights can sometimes get quite cold. Something waterproof, like a

Especially if you’re travelling to more remote areas a good old-fashioned map is essential as the phone or internet signal can be unreliable and you really don’t want to get lost in the wilderness, however romantic it might seem! Other techie stuff you might want to take with you would include a compass and some kind of GPS devise. Sun protection is pretty important so a wide brimmed

jacket or rain coat, can keep you more comfortable in an unexpected downpour. If you can afford the extra weight a small tarpaulin can provide good protection against the vagaries of the weather.

While on the topic of clothing – sturdy boots or shoes will keep your feet comfortable and safe. A nasty thorn or an insect or snake bite can ruin your trip. Sandals or open shoes are not recommended even if they feel a bit cooler.

A small First Aid kit is a great addition to your packing – not necessarily too big or heavy – just the essentials like plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream and insect repellent. If you’re planning on a longer trip you might consider a more comprehensive kit including cleaning wipes, scissors, clips and pins and an aluminium blanket for emergencies.

Always take more water than you think you’ll need. It’s easy to get dehydrated which will make you feel weak and disorientated. Not a great feeling when you’re in a remote area!

For longer stays you might consider adding rehydration salts and water purification tablets to your First Aid kit. Water from a river or a dam might look clean but can still carry bacteria and micro-organisms that can cause upset stomachs or worse. Extra food is also a good idea to boost your energy –

snack bars, chocolates and trail mix can boost your energy as well as boosting your mood. A small square of chocolate can be really comforting when you’re feeling the need for a bit of a lift.

A trusty knife, like a Swiss Army knife, can be used for so many different needs, from fixing small problems like loose screws on your sunglasses, or removing thorns, to chopping, cutting, or opening tins or bottles. It even has a cork screw so you can open your bottle of wine! It’s a whole tool kit in a small lightweight form. If you’re away from civilisation a screw driver or a pair of pliers could be essential for minor repairs.

Fire starting equipment is also a good idea to include in your packing. Matches, a lighter or fire starting briquettes can really help you out for an overnight stay, or even for a warm meal on a day trip. A small fire is great for a feeling of security, warmth and comfort at night as well as for cooking and heating food and water.

For longer stays a small gas burner is more useful than collecting tinder and firewood and so much more convenient. It can be a bit heavy to carry for a day trip or a weekend stay but for longer trips it’s invaluable. It’s great to wake up and make your morning coffee and breakfast without the fuss of making a fire.

So whether it’s just a day trip or a few days of adventure make sure you’re well stocked and well packed.

Off the beaten track in the middle of Zimbabwe

Naletale Ruins or Monuments (sometimes spelled Nalatale) are a bit off the usual tourist routes which tend to focus on the attractions in the north and the east of the country, but they are really worth a detour to explore this unique cultural site. It’s on the way to become a Zimbabwe UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to local and international interest.

The monuments are situated in the centre of Zimbabwe around 85 kilometres south east of Gweru or 25 kilometres east of the town of Shangani so well off the beaten track. The roads are a bit rough and there’s a walk of about 800 metres at the end so visitors need to be

fairly determined and dedicated – so bring water, sun protection and maybe a few energy snacks. Also make sure you have some sturdy boots or shoes.

Be sure to bring your camera as the ruins themselves are spectacular and the views across the remote Somabhula Flats are unmatched. In 1960 it was declared a National Monument.

Nearby, about 22 kilometres away, is the Danan’ombe Monument, which is perhaps slightly better known. Danan’ombe was reputedly the capital of the Kalanga Torwa State, often called Butua, in early sixteenth Century maps.

As Great Zimbabwe declined, the Torwa dynasty stepped into the spotlight. They founded Khami (near Bulawayo) in the late fifteenth century and Dhlo Dhlo (near Gweru) in the sixteenth century. Eventually, they decided to move their capital to Nalatale in the seventeenth century and so history was made.

The main structure at Naletale is relatively small, compared to Danan’ombe or Great Zimbabwe. It’s an oval-shaped enclosure with a maximum diameter of 53 metres built of dry-stone walling. It was probably used by the chief or local ruler as a part time residence or retreat for

him and his family, or as an administrate centre for meetings and consultations. It probably also functioned as a way for the local ruler to show off his wealth and influence.

The walls are generally 2 to 2.5 metres high and vary from 1 to 3 metres in width, but the most intriguing thing about them is their elaborate design. They feature all the designs of the Zimbabwe architectural tradition found in many other monuments, including chevrons, herringbone and chequer patterns, cords, and ironstone coloured bands, so they form an integral part of the country’s design heritage.

Researchers have suggested that the patterns might be part of a complex visual code – for example the chequer pattern would represent a man of senior status, and the herringbone pattern would represent a woman of senior status, and the chevron would represent the fertility of the earth.

Over the centuries the dry stone walls have been subject to natural subsidence and decay, especially by trees and aloes growing through the structure. More recently treasure seekers have vandalised the site looking for gold or other ancient artefacts. Restoration efforts were initially started in the 1960s but halted in 1980 due to a lack of funding.

In November 2013, the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe were awarded a grant from the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation of the U.S. Department of State, for the restoration of the collapsed walls of the Nalatale ruins.

The project was completed in September 2014 and included restoration of the walls, clearing rubble, improvements to the access road and the addition of a small site museum, interpretative signs, and benches for visitors to rest for a while.

There are around 300 examples of drystone wall monuments across the country but Naletale is probably one of the most picturesque, both in its unique structure and architectural design, as well as the beautiful environment and the incredible views across the plains. It might be a bit off the route for most travellers but it’s worth the diversion to appreciate the local heritage and listen to the whispers of past cultures.

ZIMBABWE’S GASTRONOMY

Comedian, celebrity chef, and entrepreneur Carl Joshua Ncube made history in August 2024 when he was appointed the UN Tourism Special Ambassador for Gastronomy at the inaugural UN Tourism First Regional Forum on Gastronomy for Africa. The forum, held in VicFalls, was attended by high-level dignitaries, including the UN Tourism Secretary General and the First Ladies of several African nations.

Ncube was honoured alongside three other chefs representing different regions of Africa: Chef Yohanis Gebreyesus from Ethiopia, Chef Adenike Adefila from Nigeria, and Chef Mounir El Arem from Tunisia. The award was a well-deserved recognition for Ncube's significant contributions to the tourism industry of Zimbabwe and Africa, both as a chef, comedian, and entrepreneur.

A Passion for Zimbabwean Cuisine

"This is such an amazing opportunity and is just the position I have needed to amplify the work we have been doing over the last 15 years," said Carl Joshua Ncube, CEO of Rural BnB and Rural Expo 2024. "

This basically means I have the opportunity to interact with important stakeholders on the future of Zimbabwean food which means Government, corporates, NGO sector." Following his appointment, leading corporates, such as Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited, showered Ncube with congratulatory messages. Schweppes praised Ncube's incredible work in promoting Zimbabwean cuisines, especially his famous Mazoe Chicken dish.

A Vision for African Gastronomy

Ncube's new role has given him the authority to create an innovative blueprint for African food experiences. He aims to continue curating more on Zimbabwean and African cuisine, amplifying his collaborative work across Africa on the food agenda.

"So, before this UN Tourism Designation I had been working on redesigning our perspective on the concept of what Sadza is," he said. "It's so funny that my current mandate is to rethink everything regarding what we eat why we eat it and what other potentials do our traditional ingredients have."

Inspired by the First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa's efforts to promote local ingredients and dishes, Ncube wrote his Chikafu series of books. He believes that the involvement of leaders is crucial for the development of food culture.

Promoting Zimbabwean Cuisine Globally

Ncube plans to leverage his new platform to promote Zimbabwean cuisine on the global stage. His internationally recognized comedy career has already made him known to many people who are aware of his passion for tourism and food.

He is actively working to develop the gastronomy sector in Zimbabwe through festivals, television shows, cookbooks, culinary academies, and more traditional inspired cuisines in the tourism sector.

Technology and Innovation in Gastronomy

Ncube sees a significant role for technology and innovation in the growth of Zimbabwe's gastronomy industry. As part of the Innovation Hub at the University of Zimbabwe, he believes in the potential of streamlining innovations in food production, processing, equipment, cooking, plating, and exporting.

His video titled "Zimbabwe's Exotic Meats" on TikTok has over 3.2 million views and has attracted numerous clients for his rural tourism business and filmmakers interested in trying his alternative recipes.

The Future of Gastronomy in Zimbabwe

Ncube envisions a future where Zimbabwe's gastronomy sector is more focused on innovation and collaboration. He believes that his new designation will help to bring other sectors into the conversation and promote the use of local ingredients and indigenous systems of agriculture.

Ncube will be engaging in presentations during the Rural Expo, sharing his findings, lectures, speeches, and workshops conducted since he began his rural journey pre-COVID. He will also be discussing his Unofficial Book of Sadza, inspired by a documentary he did with the Embassy of Switzerland.

A Bright Future for Zimbabwean Gastronomy

With his passion, expertise, and global platform, Carl Joshua Ncube is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of gastronomy in Zimbabwe. His efforts to promote local cuisine, foster innovation, and contribute to sustainable tourism will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the country's culinary landscape.
