editor’s comment Industry Girls Network was pleased to host their second annual IGN Design Indaba in Parklands on the 14th and 15th of July this year. The Design Indaba was a great opportunity for Zimbabwean designers to exhibit their works and to network with other people in the industry. Apart from showcasing some of Zimbabwe’s best crafts and designs, the Design Indaba was also a lovely family day with music, and food on sale for guests. This year’s event was organized by the IGN committee comprising Lee Sanderson (Burnt Earth Designs), Laura Tofts (Artisan Design), Natalie Fisher and Karen Nyenga (Fine & Country). Thanks also to Rooney’s Hire Services for providing stands. Founded in 2014 by Holly Hudson (Holly Hudson Furniture and Design), Lee Sanderson and Laura Tofts, the Industry Girls Network exists to provide a support network for women in the design industry as it is a male-dominated field. The founders of IGN believe that Zimbabwean companies can provide world class services at better rates than international firms with the added benefit of personalized services. When the three women met to discuss their different projects, they had no idea IGN would be formed but now the network has been thriving for four years and boasts a membership of 200 people. This year’s Design Indaba had an excellent turnout and companies with outstanding exhibits included Copperwares, Collaborative Crafts Projects and Burnt Earth Designs. Additionally, members who exhibited at this year’s Design Indaba stand the chance to participate in the Sign exhibit at Zambia’s Arts and Crafts Design Show (ZADS), to be held in Lusaka in November this year. What are the exciting services offered by Zimbabwe’s finest furnishers, contractors and artisans? Read on and find out more. Industry Girls Network HOLD THEIR SECOND STUPENDOUS DESIGN INDABA

T

HE second IGN Design Indaba was held on 14th and 15th July at Parklands in Borrowdale following up on the success of the first ever event last year. It was a great day out for the whole family with coffee supplied by Zimbabwe Barista, bar service provided by The Horsebox from their mobile stall, amongst other service providers and a variety of delicious food and snacks ranging from pizzas to chips to ice cream, burgers from The Burger Boys, fine food from Antonio’s and great grilled chicken from Alechi Restaurant. Rooney’s Hire Services supplied all the individual exhibition stands and also created an elegant entrance foyer showing off their latest design and decor options, while Sign Creations did the exhibitors banners.

to “share ideals, exchange ideas, network and form strategic alliances for the benefit of all”. They also felt that the construction and manufacturing industries are often largely male dominated and that women are frequently sidelined or not really considered seriously as major contributors, whether as architects, designers, builders, landscapers, furniture manufacturers or in other related fields. The initial concept for IGN came about when, after a particularly hard and demanding work week, three women in local creative industries got together to wind down and share their problems over a few glasses of wine. After much commiseration and discussion the idea for the Industry Girls Network (IGN) was conceived. This was back in 2014 and the IGN network has continued to thrive. Their first ever Design Indaba was held at Parklands in Borrowdale on the 15th and 16th of July 2017. The second Design Indaba proved to be every bit as good as the first and shows IGN’s commitment to promoting and supporting local women in business.

The Design Indaba was an extraordinary opportunity for exhibitors – mostly members of IGN - to get their work seen and to meet other like-minded creative people. For the public it was an opportunity to see the best products and services that Zimbabwe has to offer. IGN are of the opinion that many people think that Zimbabwean products and service providers are not as good as their South African or international counterparts and they set out to prove that Zimbabwe can offer world class services and products, often at better prices and with more personalised attention.

Their current membership figures are around 200, although the numbers are fairly fluid as some women leave the workforce or move on to new jobs and new members are added. Members are required to fill the following criteria; they must be female (obviously) and over 18 years old, and they must be the owner or partner of a recognized professional company, or hold a senior executive decision making position. Members’ applications are carefully vetted and considered so a referral from a current IGN member is a good recommendation. Membership is free and membership application forms are available on their website or from secretary@ign.co.zw.

Holly Hudson (Holly Hudson Furniture and Design), Lee Sanderson (Burnt Earth Designs) and Laura Tofts (Artisan Trading) were the founding members of IGN, representing women in different creative industries. They felt that women in industry, particularly in the fields of design, construction and manufacturing, needed a dynamic and supportive network

IGN 2018

There are several ways that women in industry benefit from becoming a member:1. IGN holds regular meetings every 6 to 8 weeks where members can network with other women in similar industries and they hold an indaba – the word means an important conference or gathering - to discuss significant relevant issues. They discuss their respective problems or difficulties in their fields and seek to find solutions together, while promoting and supporting each other. They can hear talks by professional women on a number of different topics and they can listen to motivational speakers for inspiration. Themes for the Indabas have included access to business financing, marketing and branding, human resources and advice about entrepreneurship from established business women. They also enjoy good food and catering while mingling in a relaxed atmosphere. Indabas are held at the Burnt Earth showroom 50 Edinburgh Road in Borrowdale, usually on Friday afternoons. Most of the members are working mothers so the time is slotted in between the school run and preparing supper. 2. Members who exhibited at this year’s Design Indaba will also be given the chance to collaborate on the wholly Zimbabwean IGN stand at Zambia’s Arts and Crafts Design Show (ZADS), to be held in Lusaka in November later this year. ZADS is a well established event that’s attended by people from across the region. It’s a great way to for members to get regional and international exposure for their products and services. 3. IGN also offers members the chance to reach out to a targeted audience through adverts on their Facebook page and sent out to their extensive database. The advertising rates are extremely competitive and you can be assured that you’ll be reaching out to the right market. Contact secretary@igm.co.zw for more information. 4. In their programme to support and develop women in industry IGN are offering to assist women who can’t afford college or university to further their studies. They are offering a one year placement for the right applicant to spend a month at each of 12 of their most prestigious member companies to learn more about the trade and help them make the right career decisions. This year the Design Indaba was co-ordinated by four members of the IGN Committee – Lee Sanderson (Burnt Earth Designs – tiles, ceramics and mosaics), Laura Tofts (Artisan Trading – paints and accessories and Cemcrete), Natalie Fisher and Karen Nyenga (Fine and Country Zimbabwe – real estate). Exhibitors who received special mention for their outstanding displays were Copperwares, Collaborative Arts and Burnt Earth.

COLOUR FACTS

CHOOSING A WALL COLOUR

Paint Effects

Colour can indeed influence a person, however, it is important to remember that these effects differ between people. Factors such as gender, age and culture can influence how an individual perceives colour. For example, males reported that red coloured outfits made women seem more attractive, while women answered that the colour of a male’s outfit did not affect his attractiveness.

There’s a lot you can do with paint so there’s no need to do the walls all in the same color. Think outside the box and be creative!!! Try some different paint effects and patterns on a feature wall. You can use different colors on the same wall or for a subtle effect you can use different paint finishes. For example, painting a wall with Cashmere which gives matt finish and then stenciling a diamond design with a glossy paint. The effect is subtle yet elegant.

Choosing a color is not easy but then again it’s not as hard as you think! What is important is to find that one shade that will create the desired mood and make you happy. If you really don’t have any idea about what color to paint, try pulling a color out of a piece of art or area rug that is in the room. It’s a sure way to find a complimentary color. Go into a paint store or hardware and look for several paint colour chips and see how they look in the room. Hold them up to the furniture, floors, artwork, cabinets, and anything else that’s already in the room. Try to narrow it down to three or four choices. You can also get the Plascon tester 250ml pots in your chosen colour and paint a large square on the wall to see how it looks on the wall. Watch how the color changes as the intensity of light in the room changes or if its outside, how the sun moves across the sky.

Choose a Finish Once you’ve chosen a paint color and design, you’ll need to decide on a finish. Matt: This is a type of paint finish that does not reflect light and is not shiny. (Products: Interior-Plascon Cashmere and ExteriorPlascon Wall and All, Micatex) Satin: This type of paint has a satin to a shimmer finish and is very easy to clean (Products Plascon Double Velvet, Astra Superwashable satin). Gloss: Quite shiny and are recommended for trims and also hold up very well to cleaning. IGN 2018

11 Interesting Facts: Yellow is the lightest and brightest colour on the Basic Colour Wheel and in the full spectrum of light. Even some blind people can detect yellow. The meanings of yellow can be very contradictory. Yellow is one of those colours that you either love or hate. For some, yellow gives them a happy, uplifting feeling. For others, yellow gives them a headache, quite literally especially the more intense hues. Negative Symbolism: Cowardice, Deceit, Betrayal, Jealousy, Illness

Interesting Facts: Violet / Purple is the hardest colour for the eye to discriminate. That’s because it has the shortest wavelength in the light spectrum. The next shortest wavelength is Ultraviolet which is invisible to the naked eye. Purple is a regal color which can denote nobility, dignity and luxury. Deep purple or plum is a wonderful color to have in a guest room to make your visitors feel like they are getting the “royal treatment.” Negative Symbolism: Conceit, Pomposity, Arrogance, Instability, Indulgence, Immaturity, SelfInvolvement, Entitlement

BURNT EARTH 50 Edinburgh Road, Borrowdale, Harare

Founded by Colleen Meyburgh in 1998, Burnt Earth Designs plans, manufactures and supplies high quality tiles and ceramics. In 2015, Lee Sanderson took on the role of Director at Burnt Earth and has since applied her unique approach to business and creativity to broaden Burnt Earth Designs’ client base. Burnt Earth designs can be found along Edinburgh Road in Borrowdale where their catalogue of tiles, ceramics and beautiful mosaics is made. Burnt Earth Designs can guarantee durable products of premium quality as each tile is hand made with careful attention to detail. No design is the same as any other as each mosaic is designed specifically for each customer and they often create designs that are carried thematically through entire homes or work spaces. Burnt Earth tiles can be installed in bathrooms, kitchen or on pillars with bright colour schemes that include; Vumba Blues & Greens, Khami Red (inspired by the Khami ruins) whilst subdued designs are available in Doma Terracotta and Lowveld Browns. The main aim of Own You Rubbish is to raise awareness about their carbon footprint, especially in a consumer driven environment. Laurie was able to secure funding from the European Union via the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe. In addition, Own Your Rubbish works with five different community groups and twelve local artists. To date, Own Your Rubbish has produced a stunning range of furniture manufactured from recycled drums and light fixtures made from recycled plastic. Their exhibited furniture pieces at the IGN Indaba were colourful, funky and futuristic. It was even difficult to believe that some pieces had been made from rubbish. The Own Your Rubbish Exhibition launched at National Gallery of Zimbabwe and included artworks made using the four main categories of rubbish: glass, metal, plastic and paper. Artworks were designed by photographer, Laurie Macpherson and the following artisans put the artwork together: Glass 4 Africa, Hope Group, Happy Group, Laurie Macpherson, Lia Brazier, Lorraine Muwuya and Shingirirai Trust.

MOSAIC ART Mosaic Art is run by husband and wife team Ingrid and Steve Tucker. Their products include mosaic furniture, murals, floors and pools. 15 years cutting stoneware tiles for these tables and murals. Mosaic Art was founded in 2002 when Ingrid Tucker decided to fuse her skills in textile design with her flair for mosaics to create mosaic furniture and murals. The majority of Ingrid’s artworks are framed or supported by metalwork pieces, created by Ingrid’s husband Steve. Steve has designed and made the chairs and tables that are structurally sound and his cured concrete surfaces can live both outdoors and indoors. Steve fashions a variety of decorative household fixtures designed to either stand-alone or compliment Ingrid’s work as well. Ingrid’s designs generally centre on functional pieces such as garden furniture, bathrooms, kitchen counters, showers, sinks and mirrors. Mosaic Art’s pieces are not only featured in many homes but they have become the go to Mosaic supplier for boutique lodged in the country as well as outside of it. Her designs are often colourful and abstract, generally drawing on the unique tastes of her clientele for inspiration. However, nature also influences her work heavily and flowers, birds, insects and reptiles often find their way onto her mosaics. Some of her best mosaics incorporate geckoes and flame lilies to give vibrant, colourful masterpieces. The tiles she uses are produced in Zimbabwe and stone fired, making her artworks durable. “The mosaic medium, although physically gruelling is artistically fluid,” says Ingrid, “being able to accommodate the most creative designs as well as lending itself equally well to the more conservative approach.”

Nowadays, Feather Comfort imports sterilised duck down and feather in addition to cotton fabric that is pre-feather proofed, ensuring improvement in the quality of their product. Each pillow is filled with down and feather, weighing them to give soft, medium or firm fill. Their product range includes: lumbar rolls, neck rolls, pillows and duvets.
