Letter from the Editor

We are excited for the residents of Madokero and the surrounding suburbs who now have access to fantastic food and fun, shops and services within the environs of the community. After the recent opening of the Madokero Mall residents no longer have to travel to Westgate or the Harare central business district to access upmarket and sophisticated retail and food outlets as well as service providers. The Mall is another development by Terrace Africa who built and manages Borrowdale Walk, Chinamano Corner and the new Highland Park shopping malls. Michael Nott walks us through the development and the carefully selected tenants and activities.

Still in Madokero, find out how Northwest High School is nurturing global citizens through a unique approach in unlocking learners’ talents. The school has an enrolment of both day scholars and boarders drawn from the surrounding Madokero and Westgate suburbs, as well as scholars from further afield who have been impressed by the educational and boarding facilities. It is envisaged that future enrolment will include scholars from the region and beyond. Already, the school has twinned with learning institutions in South Africa, Zambia and Germany, China as well as some in in greater Europe. This gives learners the opportunity to learn about other cultures and lifestyles. So, if you’re looking to secure your child’s future success Northwest High School is one of the best options available in Zimbabwe.

Issues around mental health have become of great concern lately. Mental health is the core of all aspects of health. This is more so with the sad loss of life through suicides. These have involved various age groups and gender and have affected communities and families negatively. At Refined Magazine Zimbabwe we believe that it is not a matter that should be ignored. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lotus Wellness Spa collaborated with Leonard Makoni to offer mental wellness services to the Spa’s patrons. In this edition we take note of the fact that in this troubled world, everyone needs to take heed of issues surrounding mental wellness.

Glytime Foods proffers advice on how a balanced and healthy diet contributes to positive mental wellbeing. The health food processor promotes ‘lifestyle medicine’ to prevent and treat disease by treating the cause of the problems rather than the symptoms. They advise healthy eating, avoidance of substances that may cause harm to the body and getting help from a health professional when you consider yourself to be suffering from Chronic stress. Glytime is also running a competition in this edition of Refined Magazine Zimbabwe, so sign up and be in the running to win fabulous prizes.

It is wonderful to have in this issue, The Apple Centre Zimbabwe. The ICT solution store is an independent Premium reseller of Apple products and the first in Zimbabwe that is affiliated to different Apple distribution centres around the world. What we specially like about the Apple Centre is that it is customer centric. Every gadget bought from the store is eligible for Apple Care support under the official Apple on Year Warranty Coverage. Apple is an American brand and the dealership has created an Apple experience that matches with the Zimbabwean market and lifestyle. The Bonaqua African Triathlon Cup Troutbeck was held on Saturday 1 April at the Troutbeck Resort in scenic Nyanga. This year marks the 15th edition of the event and the sixth anniversary for Bonaqua as the official sponsor. Coca-Cola and Schweppes Zimbabwe are joint sponsors of the event, which had 51 athletes from 20 countries competing in various categories. Other sponsors included Toyota (CFAO), iGo from Cimas, EcoCash, Rooney’s and African Sun, Troutbeck Resort, Simbisa among others. It is pleasing to note that the event is endorsed by the International Triathlon Union (ITU). This means participants score points within the ITU ranking system and ultimately points for the Olympic Ranking Qualification for the 2024 Olympics. Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Kirsty Coventry, hopes the event will inspire young athletes to train harder and develop their skills in order to participate in both local and international competitions.

The new Mahindra XUV700 is the leading pioneer of a new generation of SUVs manufactured by the Indian automobile manufacturer. The XUV700 is miles ahead in terms of sophistication, technology and luxury. It is a robust yet stylish well equipped and safe family car. From the onset, the automobile gets all the basics right and then wows you with its segment-first features.

Mahindra Auto Zimbabwe, the new flagship Mahindra dealership, will set new standards in the local automobile industry as it will be the biggest Mahindra dealership in the country. To elevate its customer experience, Mahindra Auto will offer an unparalleled experience with regards to new vehicle sales, parts supply and aftersales support.

Looking at the new SUV, which is an upgrade from the XUV500 range, the change in proportions has made the car flow better, giving it a mature look with lines that are softer and cleaner. The exterior design’s stylishly sleek lines and aerodynamic shape gives it a bold and dynamic look.

Automobile reviewer ZigWheels admits that the car is “big enough to look confidently straight at its rivals”. The reviewer adds that “it does not have elements that are shouting out for attention which makes it look memorable and likeable”.

The cheetah inspired frontage is a unique characteristic of the XUV700. The grille has a blacked out visage coupled with chrome finish on vertical slats and links seamlessly with the sleek LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps (DRLs). Below the headlights, the SUV has a dual fog lamp assembly. Generally, the front section is imposing and gives the SUV a dominating road presence. Moreover, the Alloy wheel design gives it a beastly elegance.

Mahindra debuted its new ‘Twin Peaks’ logo on the XUV700 and it will be introduced on other SUV models in a phased manner. The new emblem is inspired by the brand statement ‘Explore the Impossible’.

Smart door handles that sit flush in the body give the car a clean look that is devoid of any protrusions. They come in two variants, the first being manual and with the other, the

handle pops out when the door is unlocked.

Well-crafted interiors that include soft touch finishing and stitching of the leatherette upholstery and air purifier are the epitome of luxury on four wheels. The three-row SUV is the first car in its segment to offer smart air filter technology that filters 99 and 95 percent of bacteria and viruses respectively. The large windows provide ambient lighting and a vista of the scenery outside whether you are in the driver’s seat or a passenger.

The SUV has ample knee room and accommodates five to seven people comfortably. The flat floors and wide cabin make it an ideal family car. The boot space is expansive and the seats can be folded for additional luggage holding capacity.

The XUV700 provides a comfortable and luxurious ride experience, thanks to its sci-fi technology, spirited performance and world-class safety.

It comes with world class safety features, reaffirming Mahindra’s commitment towards safety. This is notable in that it is not only meant to keep you safe in the event of an accident, kudos to the seven airbags, but rather it keeps you from getting into a collision. The radar based ‘advanced driver assistance systems’ (ADAS)

that include lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning means you can avoid collisions.

Four advanced wide angle cameras work together to give a 360 degree view of the vehicle and blind spot monitoring. The cameras continuously record and store footage for up to 11 hours. You will definitely not miss the adrenaline fuelled moments. The Digital Video Recorder (DVR) feature allows you to capture the feed from all the cameras just like a dashboard camera. The XUV700 also features a lap timer.

The climate control console is easily accessible and the driver’s seat has a 6 way adjustable capability.

A high powered Sony system equipped with 12 speakers provides three dimensional crispy clear sound. The integrated display panel of 26.03 centimetre infotainment and another digital cluster of similar dimension houses an army of first-insegment, intuitive and advanced infotainment features. You also have a seven inch digital display for the driver above the steering column.

The car comes with petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version is a 2.0 litre turbo motor that makes around 197 bhp. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel churns out 182 bhp. Both engines come with the choice of manual and

automatic transmission, along with optional All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) capabilities. The SUV has multiple drive modes. ZIP mode is for easy and comfortable city driving, ZAP mode gives that extra thrust of power and ZOOM mode allows the driver

The Apple Centre Zimbabwe is an independent Premium reseller of Apple products and the first in Zimbabwe that is affiliated to different Apple distribution centres around the world mainly in the United States of America, China and the United Arab Emirates, India and South Africa.

The Apple Centre Zimbabwe started in 2017 on the back of indepth research into the market looking at existing industry players, customers and regulators in a bid to understand market changes and opportunities.

Apple is an American brand and the dealership wanted to create an Apple experience that matches with the Zimbabwean market and lifestyle.

“From 20182023 we have been providing clients with a variety of our elite line-up of products and testing our

strategies that work with our own people in Zimbabwe,” Warren Sika the store’s proprietor points out.

He explains that the store strictly merchandises Apple products and is therefore not branded as an ‘authorized reseller’. Stores that sell multiple brands need authorization to resell because they are not under the Apple distribution ecosystem, “but we are”.

Apple certified technicians that have gone through training and have completed over 5000 repairs individually over at five year period are at hand to ensure quality repairs are conducted. The entire staff complement has undergone training by South African partner Digicape.

For individuals that are not tech savvy, Warren says his store offers Apple Care support under the official Apple on Year Warranty Coverage. Every phone bought from the store is eligible for this. iPhones purchased elsewhere receive support under a subscriptional charge. He highlights that customers are given assistance in setting up their devices noting that “we are here to provide solutions to every Apple user regardless of their background and which part Zimbabwe they are from.” No fees are levied on enquiries.

Additionally, a wide range of services and on device training is on offer for customers. This is especially for parents who need to monitor what their children are doing and watching on their devices. Remote management systems make it easier for parents to monitor what their children are accessing online.

The spectrum of products includes iPhones, MacBooks and iPads, AirPods as well as iMac Apple Watches and related product accessories.

The general conception is that Apple

Zimbabwean that can afford the latest iPhone or newest products we are not the numbers we are for those that already know their worth enough to afford an iPhone. To those that can’t afford we have custom plans for each individual,”

To that end, the store indicates that there is a lay-by facility if a potential customer cannot make a full payment once off. In the local Information and Communication Technology (ICT) retail industry that has a deluge of players, Apple Centre

“We are totally different from some of our industry players, no, in fact we are in an industry of our own because we are the only Premium Reseller in Zimbabwe and we have the biggest distribution network of Apple products in Zimbabwe and we keep on growing,” Warren states.

The repair system is convenient and efficient. Apple Centre is the only store that delivers nationwide on any day. Stock is readily available in store and the waiting period does not exceed 10 working days for any Apple product.

Being customer oriented, The Apple Centre envisages growth, with Warren hinting that “the business model that we have been using has been working very well and we see ourselves growing even better in the future”. Our aim is to make sure that our customers’ needs and desires are met, it’s all about them not us, he adds.

The Apple Centre Store is located at 147 Enterprise Road, Ridgeway Shopping Centre, Highlands in Harare. Customers can reach them on +263719505917, info@ theapplecentrezimbabwe.co.zw or facebook.com/theapplecentre.zw

Fantastic Food And Fun Shops And Services

All THAT AND MORE AT THE NEW MADOKERO MALL

Residents of Madokero and the surrounding suburbs are delighted by the recent opening of Madokero Mall – yet another fantastic development by Terrace Africa who built and manage Borrowdale Walk, Chinamano Corner and the new Highland Park shopping malls. Previously residents had to travel to Westgate or the Harare CBD to be able to access such upmarket and sophisticated retail and food outlets and service providers. Terrace Africa’s wealth of experience in retail is evident in the design and construction of the Mall as well as in their carefully chosen selection of tenants. The main anchor tenant, situated right in the centre of the

Mall, is a large Pick n Pay supermarket. It’s a well-lit, bright and modern store with a huge range of products on offer –the same range and the same prices that you’ll find at any Pick n Pay nationwide. There’s a great range of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, chicken and fish, dairy products, tinned and dried goods as well as household products. The shop has the usual sections for freshly prepared food, an in-store bakery and a deli counter for the best meat and chicken cuts. It’s well laid out and spacious and there’s a lot of check out tills so you never have to wait too long in line. There’s also a separate Pick n Pay Liquor store just outside for all your liquor requirements

including a wide range of beers, wines and spirits.

Just in front of the entrance to Pick n Pay there’s an open foyer space for customers to load or unload their trolleys under the high outside roof. The foyer or little courtyard has branches of Mukuru and World Remit for convenient financial services to send or receive money.

There’s also a branch of Square Deal for cleaning and household products sold at discount prices. Service provider Liquid Home has an outlet on the corner facing the courtyard

on one side and the parking area on the other side. You can make payments and request assistance for any problems or apply for a new installation.

Immediately to the left of the Pick n Pay entrance – still under the high roof – is Zaywa Linen. Zaywa Linen stocks an exclusive and luxurious range of sophisticated bed linen, duvets, pillows, bed covers and throws and de-luxe blankets. They stock a select range of décor items like vases, candles and candleholders, cutlery, crockery and glassware.

REFINED | ISSUE 7 | 2023 | 25

Their first branch opened in Lubumbashi in 2021, and this is their first branch in Zimbabwe.

If you’re looking for a brand-new bed for your new bed linen, you’ll find a branch of TV Sales and Homes who supply a wide range of household furniture, appliances and accessories. They have branches across Zimbabwe and stock an extensive range of leading brands.

Just next door to TV Sales and Home is the latest branch of Jet Stores. Jet stocks some selected household goods as well as cosmetics and fragrances but their main focus is on affordable good quality clothing for men, women and kids.

If you’re looking for more kids’ clothing, toys and accessories there’s a branch of TUDiki. They stock the best brands of clothing for children from new-borns to young teens. They also stock furniture and accessories for kids’ rooms as well as a wide range of toys and games.

On the subject of kids – there’s a children’s play area at the left-hand side of the Mall and a little further down there are two Futsal sized soccer fields for adults and kids to enjoy friendly games in a safe environment while their parents shop or eat.

To help keep you looking your best there’s Craig’s Studio for all your hair and beauty products and services. This is their third branch after Avondale and Highland Park. Treat yourself to a new hair style or get your nails done in comfort and style.

Of course, to look your best you need to keep your clothes in their best condition. There’s a depot for Central Dry Cleaners where you can drop your special or delicate garments for cleaning and freshening up when you do your shopping. They also clean carpets and curtains to keep your home looking good too!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Eye Clinic Opticians are eye care specialists known for delivering their services to the best international standards and expertly taking care of your eyes and vision. They service a clientele of all ages, whether they require ordinary eye checks or more advanced attention.

The company has been in existence for 20 years, contributing its specialist services to an expanding target market in the northern suburbs of Harare and beyond, and is one of Zimbabwe’s better-known optometry sector players. As a sign of their continued growth and appreciation of their services, they recently opened a new branch, Shop Number 11, Madokero Mall, Tynwald, south west of the Harare CBD. The branch will service the Madokero Suburb and neighbouring areas and promises to deliver the best service for every client who walks through their doors.

The company says that the provision of basic eye care is the entry point for patients to receive refractions and glasses or contact lenses, referral to specialists, coordination with other aspects of eye medical care, and much more.

The company recommends that regularly scheduled eye exams must be taken for one to enjoy life with reduced chances for eyesight problems. This step is a non-negotiable requirement as it allows the early detection of any vision challenges that may occur. Once one has undergone this, specific recommendations are made to take up the respective vision challenge with a recommended eye care specialist.

For all residents of Madokero and surrounding areas, Eye Clinic Opticians is the ideal healthcare facility to consult for all your eye care needs.

Opens New Showroom in Eastlea, Harare

Founded in February 2018, Jekesa Electrical Hardware Store and Showroom, has opened a new and spacious showroom in Eastlea, Harare. The wholly-owned Zimbabwean company, operating within the construction industry sector is making a bold statement of its intentions to lead in the sourcing and supplying of electrical goods. The company also does consultancy in wiring and lighting, as well as providing renewable energy solutions such as solar power.

The showroom has pride of place at 4 Donald McDonald Drive, Eastlea, Harare. From here, it delivers a warm and friendly service to a clientele that values quality products.

“We moved into the new showroom on 13 April 2023. This step was beyond being just strategic; it was overdue as the business had outgrown our original space and we needed to move clients to a more luxurious space. There was also the inevitable need to reduce expenses, and make the business more sustainable,” said Mrs Charuma, the founder of Jekesa Electrical Hardware Store and Showroom.

DESIGN 42 | REFINED | ISSUE 7 | 2023

The showroom is a former house that used to accommodate the founder’s family for the past 15 years. At over 280 square metres, it occupies an existing building that was spruced up with minor renovations. The showroom has rooms that enable clients to visualise lighting solutions.

The vision of the company is: To become the preferred supplier of high-quality lighting, electrical, and construction hardware solutions as well as create exquisite interior and exterior

spaces. This foresight is evident in the over 860 lines of products available. Products categories include bathroom lighting, chandeliers, crystal lights, exterior lights, LED lights, garden lights, and wall lights. Extending this range are down lights, rope and strip lights, panel lights, ceiling lights, track lights, extractor fans, inground lights, bulbs, solar lights, and more.

The company represents some of the more reliable international brands including Radiant, Fumagali, Casaluce,

and Bright Star, sourced from markets as diverse as South Africa, Turkey, Italy, and China.

Registered with the Construction Industry Federation of Zimbabwe (CIFOZ), they have been catering to the domestic market (individuals and corporates) with outstanding service and feedback.

Charuma notes that clients walking into the showroom should expect to experience a refreshing and helpful service by knowledgeable staff.

“Our products are of good quality, and our pricing is reasonable. We are also helpful and will tailor make our service to meet or surpass customers’ expectations,” said Charuma when asked why customers should patronise Jekesa Electrical Hardware Store and Showroom.

In the next 5 to 10 years the company expects to have more branches and additional products so that it can be closer to customers throughout the country.

How to Create a Cozy and inviting Home with Lighting

Home lighting is an important part of creating a comfortable and inviting space. The right lighting can help to set the mood, highlight your home’s features, and even improve your safety.

When choosing home lighting, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the function of the space. For example, you’ll need different lighting for a kitchen than you would for a bedroom. Second, think about the overall style of your home. You’ll want to choose lighting that complements your décor. Finally, don’t forget about the importance of safety. Make sure to install lights in all areas where you might need them, such as hallways, stairs, and bathrooms.

Here are a few tips for choosing the right home lighting:

Consider the function of the space. Different rooms in your home will require different types of lighting. For example, you’ll need bright, taskoriented lighting in your kitchen for cooking and food preparation. In your living room, you’ll want a more ambient light that creates a relaxing atmosphere. And in your bedroom, you’ll need soft, dimmable lighting that’s perfect for reading or sleeping.

Think about the overall style of your home. When choosing home lighting, it’s important to choose fixtures that complement your décor. If you have a traditional home, you might want to choose chandeliers or sconces. If you have a more modern home, you might want to choose track lighting or recessed lighting.

Don’t forget about the importance of safety. Make sure to install lights in all areas where you might need them, such as hallways, stairs, and bathrooms. This will help to ensure that you and your family are always safe.

DESIGN 44 | REFINED | ISSUE 7 | 2023

Here are a few additional tips for creating a beautiful and functional home lighting scheme:

Use a variety of light sources. Don’t rely on just one type of light source for your home. Use a combination of ceiling lights, floor lamps, table lamps, and accent lights to create a well-lit space.

Use dimmer switches. Dimmer switches are a great way to create different moods in your home.

For example, you can use a dimmer switch to create a more intimate atmosphere in your bedroom or a more festive atmosphere in your living room.

Use task lighting. Task lighting is essential for any room in your home where you need to do specific tasks, such as cooking, reading, or grooming. Task lighting can be provided by table lamps, floor lamps, or under-cabinet lighting.

Use accent lighting. Accent lighting is a great way to highlight certain features in your home, such as artwork, architectural details, or plants. Accent lighting can be provided by recessed lighting, track lighting, or wall sconces.

With a little planning, you can create a home lighting scheme that is both beautiful and functional. By following these tips, you can create a space that is both inviting and safe.

• Keep on learning

The bottom line Without sound mental health it is impossible to attain complete health. The brain and heart get hurt just as much as a bone can get a fracture. Just as there is no stigma related to going to the dentist, no one should feel ashamed to visit a counsellor. As each of us takes care of our mental wellness, we create a psychologically safe living environment that promotes overall health.

Bonaqua African Triathlon Cup Troutbeck

A Hugely Successful And Well Organised World Class Event

FITNESS 50 | REFINED | ISSUE 7 | 2023

The Bonaqua African Triathlon Cup Troutbeck was held on Saturday 1st April at the Troutbeck Resort in scenic Nyanga. 2023 marks the 15th edition of the event and the 6th anniversary for Bonaqua as the official sponsor. As the manufacturers of the Bonaqua brand Coca-Cola and Schweppes Zimbabwe are joint sponsors of the event. Other sponsors included Toyota (CFAO), iGo from Cimas, Ecocash, Rooney’s, African Sun, Troutbeck Resort, Simbisa and others.

The event was co-ordinated and organised by Rick Fulton in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and the Triathlon Association of Zimbabwe. The event is endorsed by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) which means participants score points within the ITU ranking system and ultimately points for the Olympic Ranking Qualification for the 2024 Olympics, so the results are recognised worldwide.

Events included the Elite and Junior races as well as an African CrossTriathlon (Off Road) Championship, the CIMAS Corporate Triathlon Challenge, Zimbabwe Triathlon Championship over a number of events, Tri-Kidz and

Trisports Triathlon, Aquathlon (an event including running and swimming) and the Open Water Swim with all of the events falling under the umbrella of the Bonaqua Troutbeck Multisport Festival.

It was a truly international event with over 51 athletes taking part from 20 countries including Mexico, Ireland, South Africa, Mozambique, the Netherlands, Chile, Slovenia, Japan, Austria, Kazakhstan, Togo, Mauritius, Morocco, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Romania, Guam and Bermuda.

The men’s Elite race was won by James Edgar from Ireland with Dylan Nortje from South Africa taking second place and Jorge Alarcon Familiar from Mexico taking third place. Shanae Williams from South Africa won the Elite women’s race with second place going to Barbara de Koning from the Netherlands and third place going to Romano Gajdosova from Slovenia. Shaun Wolfaardt won the Junior men’s title and Kadence Ribbink took the Junior women’s title – both of them from South Africa. The best performing Zimbabwean athlete was Anje van As who took fourth place in the Junior women’s event.

Although Zimbabwe was not able to claim any medals Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Kirsty Coventry, was full of praise for the organisers for putting together a world class event. She pointed out that the event has drawn together a number of important sponsors and has survived through 15, sometimes

turbulent, years demonstrating the organisers’ commitment to excellence and sustainability. She hoped the event would inspire young, up and coming athletes to train harder and develop their skills in order to participate in both local and international competitions.

In a press release Coca-Cola Frontline Marketing Manager, Barry Otieno said, “We are delighted that every year, through our Bonaqua brand, we have been able to support Triathlon Zimbabwe to bring this event, which is not only significant for sports but is also a flagship for the country’s tourism industry. Each year, together with our partners and organisers, we strive to make the event more exciting. We, therefore, call the Zimbabweans to come and enjoy as we cheer the future Olympic hopefuls in action in the Africa Triathlon Junior Cup and support the best of our local athletes in the Zimbabwe Junior National Championships.”

Troutbeck Resort demonstrated their outstanding ability to host such a prestigious event with excellent accommodation options for participants and spectators. The Troutbeck Resort area has good road routes for running and cycling, safe and clean water for the swimming events, as well as outstanding scenery and ideal climatic conditions.

Hopefully the event will continue to be staged for many more years to come putting Zimbabwe firmly on the international sporting map as well as motivating local athletes to reach for the stars.
