FUN DINING
FUN DINING SHINES THROUGH IN THE FOOD
Three Monkeys Delights Harare Diners Text By Michael Nott
6 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
T
he new Three Monkeys restaurant in Harare offers more than just delicious food – there’s a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, an extensive menu to cater for all tastes, a huge selection of wines, beers, spirits and cocktails, excellent service and a child friendly, family oriented policy, so everyone can enjoy an outstanding dining experience. Their sister restaurant in Victoria Falls, the original Three Monkeys, has been awarded four and a half points out of a possible five by the international reviewer TripAdvisor. The Harare restaurant is relatively new so it doesn’t have very many reviews yet, but it has already garnered four points in just a few months!
The restaurant, designed by architect Gemma Temlett from Architexture Spatial Design (together with extensive input from the landlord Dustin Wilcox and one of the owners of Three Monkeys Ilan Wiesenbacher) has a wonderful indoor/outdoor feel with views across the landscaped garden to a small dam and water feature. Apart from more formal indoor seating there’s also the option for outdoor al fresco dining on the deck. The interior design enhances the beautiful setting with a rustic, industrial look made up of exposed brickwork, teak floors and high ceilings.

White Thread Interiors has added touches of elegance and sophistication in the selection of the lighting, luxuriant, tropical foliage wallpaper, feature tiles and a green marble countertop for the bar. It’s a light and airy space that feels laid back and comfortable but it’s still chic and stylish. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week and its open from 8am with last orders at 9pm in the evening. The breakfast menu is served until 11am. The menu offers a variety of choices including the standard bacon and eggs and a full English style breakfast among other options including muesli and smoothies.
All the breads, cakes, pastries, pizza bases and pies are freshly baked daily on site by their pastry chef. Greg Paymans, executive chef, creates and curates the menu. The menu is similar to the menu in Victoria Falls with a few small tweaks for different tastes and the availability of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The head chef on the ground (or in the kitchen) at Three Monkeys in Harare is Ricky Moyo and there are an additional three sous chefs, all of whom are very experienced and professionally trained in culinary skills. It’s an extensive menu that caters for a wide variety of different palates whether it’s simple or sophisticated. To whet your appetite and wake up your taste buds they have a selection of ‘small plates’ including beef carpaccio, chicken livers, spring rolls, prawns and calamari. One of their outstanding specialities is Tiropitakia – a Greek inspired treat of phyllo pastry parcels filled with feta with mint and grape jam. It’s a must if you’re craving something different and delicious.
8 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
For main courses or entrees there are burgers, wraps, a wide variety of pizzas as well as steaks, chicken and fish from the wood fired grill. The menu includes a selection of sauces and side dishes too. There’s also a decent selection of choices for vegetarians so there really is a good choice for everyone. Oh, and there’s a kids’ menu too for the little ones. Groups of 10 people or more can select the special sharing menu – similar to the main menu – but set up in a buffet, ‘Sunday lunch’ style. Platters of meat, chicken and fish together with vegetables, salads and sides are set out along the centre of the table and diners can help themselves and pass the platters around. It makes for a relaxed and convivial atmosphere and a great dining experience.
The emphasis is on a fun dining experience that’s relaxed and sociable, rather than a stuffy and formal fine dining experience. It’s not just about the great food but also about the whole experience and atmosphere. There’s no ‘smart dress’ code so patrons can wear casual and relaxed clothes - or dress up for a night out if they choose.

Three Monkeys believe that everyone should feel comfortable and at home. It’s family orientated and kid friendly with loads of open space in front for kids to run around as well a supervised play area. Parents can relax and enjoy their meals without the children disrupting their experience or worrying about what mischief the children are up to. The table settings and the seating are simple but elegant and functional so there are no starched linen table cloths or cut glass crystal wine glasses. The restaurant is particularly appealing in the evenings when the lighting inside, on the deck and in the garden creates a really romantic ambiance.
10 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
It’s also great to take a gentle stroll around the lake to digest the very generous potions that Three Monkeys serves up.
Apart from the good food and excellent, fast and friendly service one of the things that makes Three Monkeys special is their extensive wine list. They have over 100 wines on offer including local and South African wines and others from well-known international wine producers. Three Monkeys has worked with Tinashe Nyamudoka to curate their wine list. Nyamudoka has competed in the World Wine Tasting Championships in Cape Town as well as in similar competitions in Europe earning a respectable place in the finals. He has a number of qualifications including a certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers Europe and years of experience at leading restaurants in South Africa. He’s now producing his own range of wines called Kumusha, blended from some of the best wines from the Eastern Cape, which is gaining international recognition.
REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023

He’s even helped Three Monkeys produce their own eponymous brand of wine which is produced and bottled in South Africa. Nyamudoka has also helped to train Three Monkey’s team of sommeliers to advise diners how to select the best wines to complement their meals. Apart from their wine list Three Monkeys offers local and imported beers and ciders as well as local beer on tap from the River Brewing Company. There’s an extensive range of spirits, liqueurs and shooters.
12 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
Their cocktail menu includes all the classics like Martinis, Pimm’s Cups, Mojitos, Daiquiris, Bloody Mary’s and other more exotic creations prepared by their trained mixologists. Most of the staff have had previous exposure working in South Africa or internationally. The whole team is professional and friendly to cater for the 185 diners which the restaurant can accommodate.

Nearly all the ingredients for the meals, apart from things like the calamari and the prawns, are locally sourced helping to support local producers and reducing the restaurant’s carbon footprint. In fact, a lot of the vegetables, leafy greens for the salads and a variety of fresh herbs are sourced directly from Food Lovers farm. This means that the produce is incredibly fresh and supports Three Monkey’s farm to fork policy.

They have recently hosted very successful functions, including a three course special for Mothers’ Day. They also cater for other events like office parties (book now for your Christmas party) birthdays, cocktail parties, romantic Valentine’s Day dinners and wedding receptions and offer some selected packages for Zimbabwe’s national holidays. Future plans might include live Jazz bands on a Sunday and other entertainment. The restaurant is fairly new so they’re still finding their feet and discovering what appeals most to local diners.

The Rise of Athleisure TEXT BY PERRY KAANDE
A
thleisure is a type of comfortable and fashionable clothing that is designed to be worn for both workouts and everyday activities. It combines elements of athletic wear and street fashion and is often made from soft, breathable fabrics. Athleisure can be worn to the gym, to run errands or even to work, making it a versatile and practical option for people who are always on the go. There are a number of influences that have contributed to the rise of athleisure. One is the increasing popularity of fitness and wellness. People are more conscious of their health and fitness than ever before, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they are looking for clothing that is comfortable and functional for exercising.
20 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
Another factor is the changing workplace culture. Many workplaces are now more casual, and employees are allowed to wear athleisure clothing to work. This is especially true in tech companies and creative spaces, where a casual dress code is seen as a way to foster creativity and innovation. Additionally, the rise of social media has also played a role in the popularity of athleisure. Celebrities and influencers are often seen wearing athleisure clothing, which has helped to make it more mainstream. Athleisure clothing is designed to be comfortable and functional, making it perfect for everyday wear. The designs have also become increasingly stylish in recent years, with many brands offering fashionable designs that can be worn for both workout and casual wear. Brands such as Nike, Addidas and Puma as well as Under Armour are among the world’s leading players in the Athleisure industry. The fashion trend is very versatile and be dressed up or down, making it an option for a variety of occasions. Due to its informality, Athleisure clothing is more affordable than traditional formalwear, making it a more accessible choice for many people. On the flip side, some critics argue that Athleisure is lazy and unfashionable. The older generation who grew up on Saville Row-inspired fashion worry that it is contributing to the decline of formal attire. However, with the demographic dividend leaning toward the youth, the athleisure trend is unlikely to slow down. In fact, it is expected to continue to increase in popularity in the coming years. The athleisure trend is here to stay, and it is only going to continue to grow in popularity in the years to come. As people become more and more conscious of their health and fitness, and as the workplace culture continues to become more casual, athleisure clothing will become the norm for everyday wear.

Zimbabwean riders participate at the world equestrian finals in South Africa Text by Martin Chemhere
T
wo riders Nicholas Nicolle and Zoe Roberts represented Zimbabwe at the FEI (World Jumping Challenge Finals) 2023, staged in Polokwane, South Africa from 3 - 8 October. Show jumping is a popular equestrian sport in Zimbabwe. It is governed by the Zimbabwe Equestrian Federation (ZEF). The ZEF organizes many show jumping events throughout the year, including the Zimbabwe Open Show Jumping Championship, the Harare Show Jumping Festival, and the Bulawayo Show Jumping Festival.
28 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
There are many show jumping clubs in Zimbabwe, including the Harare Show Jumping Club, the Bulawayo Show Jumping Club, and the Mashonaland East Show Jumping Club. These clubs provide training and support for show jumpers of all levels. Zimbabwe has produced some successful show jumpers, including Colleen Parkes, who won the Zimbabwe Open Show Jumping Championship in 2019. Parkes also represented Zimbabwe at the 2018 African Games, where she finished in 10th place in the individual show jumping competition.
ZEF is a member of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), organisers of the FEI Jumping World Challenge Final, which is open to 20 riders, which are the 2 best-placed Category A from the 10 regional Zones The last challenge was held in 2019 from 9 to 15 September at Club Rancho San Francisco, in Quito, Ecuador, South America. As one of the host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Polokwane has a proven track record in successfully organising major sporting events and is known for its vibrant equestrian community.
“We are delighted to have such an experienced organiser take charge of the FEI World Challenge Cup Final and we are confident that they will deliver a high level of competition facilities for our human and equine athletes,” FEI President and Chair of the FEI Solidarity Committee Ingmar De Vos said. The FEI Jumping World Challenge Final is open to all National Federations outside of Western Europe and North America. The two best athletes from each Regional Zone based on the 2022 rankings are eligible to take part in the Final. During the FEI Jumping World Challenge Final, athletes compete on borrowed horses that are aged six years or more and meet stringent criteria of a minimum 1m20 level. Twenty athletes, along with a maximum of two wild cards, have qualified for the Final with the top two athletes from each of the ten FEI
regional rankings representing their countries in Polokwane. “The FEI Jumping World Challenge Final will serve as a defining moment in the careers of many athletes, as it offers a rare opportunity for them to experience the intensity and demands of high-level equestrian competition,” Chair of FEI Group IX Gigi Mathias said. ZEF (formerly called the Horse Society of Zimbabwe and previously called The Rhodesian Horse Society) was founded in 1954 by the amalgamation of the Bulawayo Showing and Jumping Association and the Mashonaland Horse Society. Currently, ZEF is composed of two branches, Mashonaland and Matabeleland. The Zimbabwe Equestrian Federation is the National Federation that represents equestrian sport in Zimbabwe. It has been a member of the FEI for over 50 years now.

The championship showcased the incredible athleticism and skill of dogs in obedience, agility and jumping. The competition also included navigating challenging obstacle courses. During the prize-giving ceremony, one of the judges commented that the handling of the dogs was much improved this year compared to the previous edition. The judges noted that the dogs were more obedient and responsive to their handlers who have become more skilled and experienced.
“I am told the handling has improved. It was quite good today,” he said. The Kennel Club of Harare has been providing training for dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes for several decades. On Saturdays and Sundays, the club offers classes in a variety of disciplines, including basic puppy socialisation, good manners, obedience, jumping and agility. The dog club’s training programs are designed to help dogs develop their skills and confidence, while also strengthening the bond between the canines and their owners. The club’s experienced and qualified trainers use positive reinforcement methods to teach dogs the skills they need to be well-behaved and obedient companions.

Some dog owners choose to only give their dogs basic training, while others decide to compete in dog shows. For those who choose to contest, there are a number of shows held throughout the year where dogs can compete against each other in a variety of disciplines. The Kennel Club of Harare arranges and collaborates with international organisations to offer training workshops for its members. Recently, two top South African trainers conducted workshops on canine behaviour and agility. During the behavioural workshops, members learned about the Canine Ladder of Aggression, which is a visual representation of the gestures a dog may use when feeling stressed or threatened. GADGETS FOR THE HEALTHCONSCIOUS HOME
TEXT BY PERRY KAANDE
I
n today’s world, there are a multitude of gadgets available to help us live healthier lives. These devices can help us monitor our health, save energy and automate tasks. If you are looking to improve your health and well-being, here are a few gadgets that can help to do that.
Fitness Trackers Fitness trackers are a great way to track your steps, distance, calories burned, and other fitness metrics. They can also be used to set goals and track your progress over time. These are wrist-worn devices that can detect some combination of walking steps, running distance, heart rate, sleep patterns and swimming laps. Fitness bands interact via Bluetooth with an app in a mobile device that configures the device and downloads the wearer’s activity data. Most smartwatches support some number of physical actions via a health application. However, dedicated trackers tend to monitor more functions.
34 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
Air Purifiers Air purifiers remove pollutants and allergens from the air in a home. This helps improve respiratory health and overall well-being.
Smart Scales The scale is a pervasive fixture in many homes, often tucked away in a snug corner in the bathroom. It sits there, silently reminding us to check in on our weight, whether we want to or not. For some, the scale is a source of love and hate. We may dread stepping on it, but we also know that it can be a helpful tool for tracking our progress. Smart scales are more than just weight-measuring devices. They can also assess body composition, such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, and bone mass. This information can help people better understand their overall health and make informed decisions about their fitness goals.
Sleep Trackers Sleep trackers can track your sleep quality, including the amount of time you spend in each sleep stage. There are many different types of sleep trackers and some of the most popular types include wearable trackers that you can strap to your wrist, clips that you can attach to your pillow, and devices that sit on your bedside table. The devices can determine the duration of sleep by tracking the time you’re inactive, recording when you fall asleep at night and when you stir in the morning. They can detect sleep quality by letting you know when you’re tossing and turning or waking during the night. A few systems track your sleep phases and set your alarm during a period when you are sleeping less deeply. Some monitor environmental factors, such as the amount of light or temperature in your bedroom. In some trackers, you are asked to enter information about activities that can affect sleep, such as caffeine intake or stress levels.
Purifiers filter and decontaminate indoor air by removing pollutants in a multi-step process. First, the purifier draws in air from the room. This is then passed through a series of filters that trap different types of pollutants, such as dust, pollen and pet dander. The purified air is then released back into the room. Safety features should be considered when choosing an air purifier. It is also important to ensure that the air purifier does not generate any secondary pollutants. These are just a few of the many gadgets that are available to help you live a healthier life. Also note that when choosing gadgets for your health-conscious home, it is important to consider your individual needs and preferences. These may include, your budget, compatibility with other devices in your home and their ease of use as well as the features that are important to you.

Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Chlorophytum Comosum, also known as the spider plant or airplane plant, is a popular houseplant that is native to Southern Africa. It is a perennial plant with tuberous roots and long, sword-shaped leaves that grow from a central rosette. The leaves are green with white stripes or variegation. The plant blooms in the summer with small, white flowers that are arranged on an elongated raceme. Spider plants are easy to care for and can thrive in a variety of conditions. They prefer bright, indirect sunlight, but can also tolerate low-light conditions. They are also droughttolerant and can go for long periods of time without water. Spider plants are known for their air-purifying abilities. They can help to remove harmful pollutants from the air, such as benzene and formaldehyde. This makes them a good choice for homes with young children or pets.
38 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
Succulents (Succulent plant)
Succulents are plants that have adapted to store water in their leaves, stems or roots. The leaves of succulents are often thick and fleshy, but some genera and species have thicker leaves than others. They are popular houseplants because they are relatively easy to care for. They can be watered infrequently and do not need to be fertilized often. Ideally, they should be placed in a spot where they will receive bright, indirect sunlight. Remember, when choosing plants for small spaces, it’s important to consider the amount of light they need, how much water they require and how much maintenance they need. You also want to make sure that the plants you choose complement your décor.
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) The Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, also known as the ZZ plant, is a lowmaintenance houseplant that is known for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in low-light conditions. It is native to Zanzibar and is named after its Zamioculcas genus and Zamiifolia species. The ZZ plant is a slow-growing plant that can reach up to about 60 centimetres tall. It has glossy, dark green leaves that are arranged in a fan-like pattern.
Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
The Sansevieria Trifasciata, also known as the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, is a popular houseplant that is native to Africa and Asia. It is known for its long, swordshaped leaves that grow upright and can reach up to around one metre long. The leaves are dark green with yellow or cream edges. The Psychology of Colour in Interior Décor
Text by Perry Kaande

C
olour is one of the most important elements of interior design. It can be used to create a specific mood or atmosphere in a room, and it can also be used to visually expand or contract a space. The way a space makes us feel varies from person to person. Some people may feel a sense of calm and peace when they enter a space, while others may feel energized and ready to take on the day. Still, others may feel tension and anxiety in a particular space. There are many factors that can influence how we feel in a space, including the colours, lighting, furniture, and overall design of the space. A space with calming colours, soft lighting, and comfortable furniture may make us feel relaxed and at peace. Conversely, bright colours, harsh lighting, and sharp furniture may make us feel tense and anxious.
lightness of a colour. When choosing colours, it is important to consider the function of the room. This will determine the mood or atmosphere you want to create. For example, you would want to use calming colours in a bedroom to promote relaxation, while you might want to use more stimulating colours in a living room to create a lively and energetic atmosphere. Also take into consideration that rooms with a lot of natural light can handle brighter colours, while rooms with less natural light should use softer ones. Lighter colours will make a room feel larger and brighter, while darker colours will make a room feel smaller and cosier. Personal preferences also have an effect, because ultimately, the colours you choose should be those that you like and that make you feel comfortable.
By carefully choosing hues, interior designers can evoke certain emotions in people and set a particular mood. In addition to the hue, other factors such as tint, saturation, and tone can also affect the emotional response to a colour. Tint refers to the amount of white added to a colour, which makes it lighter. Saturation refers to intensity, while tone refers to the darkness or

tepping out every day in the African summer calls for confidence and self-belief in how we look and portray ourselves. Skin condition plays a huge role in how we do this, as it shows the extent of our investment in our image; it tells a lot about an individual’s personality and approach to beauty care. These tips when adhered can assist all of us to be able to confidently muster that awesome spring in the step, whether the setting is business, wedding, church or party. In the African summer, the best skin care tips should consist of things like cleansing the skin gently, moisturising regularly, protecting the skin from the sun, exfoliating regularly, avoiding harsh products, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet, among other dermatologist and other medical recommendations. When cleansing you have to use a gentle cleanser that does not strip your skin of its natural oils. Cleansers that won’t clog your pores are recommended. The skin should be moisturized twice a day, in the morning and at night. Moisturizers that are oil-free and won’t clog your pores are ideal.

Broad-spectrum sunscreens with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 should be worn even when the sun’s heat is minimal due to clouds. For those that sweat a lot the sunscreen must be applied several times a day. Exfoliation must be done once or twice a week, using an appropriate exfoliator, to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh, new skin. Do not use harsh products on your skin like scrubs as you will risk irritating the skin. Irritating your skin can make it weak and therefore open it to infections. Sleeping for at least 7 hours per day ensures a good rest and contributes to the good looks of one’s skin. Making a routine to eat healthy foods and fluids also gives your skin much-needed nutrients that are important to living healthy. Recommended are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet.
Darker Skin: People with darker skin need not worry during the African summer. The wide range of available tips and advice should make them live a confident and beautiful life out there. KIDS CORNER
How to Help Kids Make Friends TEXT BY PERRY KAANDE
J
ust as adults may have difficulty making it into social or business circles, kids are also likely to experience difficulties in creating and nurturing friendships that will last. Making friends is essential for children’s development as it provides a platform for companionship, support and fun. Friends also help children learn how to interact and resolve conflict. Parents, guardians and the community at large can play their part to help children who are struggling to make friends.
Start at home
The best way to help your child make friends is to teach them the skills they need to be good friends. -Empathy. By treating everyone in the family fairly and with kindness, we are setting a good example for our children. We should intervene when siblings fight and avoid snapping at our partners, even when we are tired. Children learn from the adults in their lives, so it is important to model the behaviour we want them to emulate. 48 REFINED ISSUE 9 | 2023
Curiosity about others. Make it a habit for your family to ask each other about their day, their interests, and their thoughts. Communication skills. In today’s world, devices are a major obstacle to developing important skills. To counteract this, turn off your devices, have family dinners, and talk to each other. Cooperation. Engage in family activities that require teamwork and cooperation, such as projects, games, and chores. This will help your child learn about taking turns and valuing the input of others. Regulating emotions. It is normal for children to experience strong emotions. When they do, it is important to help them understand and manage their emotions in a healthy way. Knowing when and how to apologise and forgive. Teaching your child how to apologise for their mistakes, make amends, and forgive the mistakes of others is very important.
Make interactions easier When your child is around other kids who share their interests, they are more likely to connect with them and form friendships. Encourage your child to participate in activities that involve their peers, such as sports or clubs. Make sure it is something they are interested in and enjoy doing. Invite the parents of your child’s friends to a meal or outing. This would allow the children to get to know each other while easing some of the pressure. Think about fun, cooperative activities such as going to a museum or park. Encourage your child to be themselves It is important for children to feel comfortable being authentic around others. If they are trying to be someone they are not, they will be less likely to form genuine relationships. Therefore, let your child know that you love them for who they are and encourage them to be themselves around others. Keep an eye out, but don’t hover Ultimately, your child needs to learn how to make friends on their own. You don’t want to embarrass them by hovering over them or forcing them to interact with other children. However, if the children are not interacting at all, you can suggest some activities that they can do together. You can also facilitate the conversation or play,
but then step back and let them take the lead. If there is any fighting or meanness, you should step in and make it clear that such behaviour is not acceptable. Communication and support Have regular conversations with your child about their day, their interactions, and how they felt about them. Listen more than you talk. Remember that being supportive also means understanding your child’s personality and seeing the world through their eyes. You cannot make your child into someone they are not. Patience pays Making friends takes time. Don’t be discouraged if your child doesn’t make friends right away. Just keep giving them opportunities to socialise, and they will eventually find their people. Making friends can be challenging for some kids, but it is an important skill that they will need throughout their lives

Summer is perfect for that outfit you dearly love for its visual appeal and design elements that come out clear and stunning. You can walk across the gardens in style, with the fresh winds breezing by and throwing the sweet scent of that extra special scented scent.

documented through photographic and video shoots, ensuring the vendors produce some amazing products at the end. There are fewer insects in summer, which can be a major plus for couples who are planning an outdoor wedding. Widely considered the peak season for weddings, summer draws more vendors to be available to offer their specialized services and therefore more options for couples to choose from. This can make it easier to find the perfect venue, caterer, photographer, and other vendors for your wedding. For most African cultures, summer is a time of celebration, which can make it a more festive and joyous time to get married. Overall, summer is a popular season for weddings in Africa as it is a great time for a more enjoyable wedding experience. Parties: Sunny skies and the marvellous weather conditions make it pretty much the favourite season for planning events. Birthday parties held in summer tend to come out better and are popular. Remember that the winter season makes it quite a challenge to host birthday events. Summer is great for you, together with your friends and family enjoying entertainment and refreshments and a cold beer. Family reunions are great and most enjoyable in summer as everyone is keen to travel for that journey on a blue-sky-lit day, ideal for that cold beverage. Summer is great to invite friends and loved ones to an event hosted by the lake, pool, or a favourite picnic spot. It is also very perfect to host an event late at night under the stars. Employers can also look at thanking their workers during this time. The party has the impact of enhancing relationships with workmates.
