Rooney’s Hire Service, a family-owned and operated business based in Harare, Zimbabwe, but with interests in the southern African region, has been passionately creating events for over 65 years.

NEW HEADQUARTERS
After decades of operation on Seke Road, Rooneys Hire Services will, in the near future, be relocating to a new state-of-the-art head office along Airport Road. Currently under construction, the ambitious project spans 32,000 square meters, and is progressing very well.
Despite the vast size of the land, the building utilization will be relatively modest at 23.28%, amounting to approximately 8,000 square meters, according to the site manager. This strategic decision ensures efficient use of space while accommodating the specific needs of Rooney’s Hire Services.
When the Structure and Design Magazine team visited the site, trusses were already in place, forming the skeletal framework of the building. The focus has now shifted to reinforcing the structural integrity, with workers diligently installing lifting columns and compression braces. These play a crucial role in connecting the columns and providing essential support, ensuring the building’s stability and durability.
This meticulous process involves carefully positioning and securing the trusses in place.According to site managers, the rigging phase was expected to be completed within a week. The hard work and efficient efforts of Brown Engineering are vital in ensuring that the warehouse construction remains on schedule.
Rooneys is currently experiencing constrained space at their several locations they are operating from along Seke Road and now they seek to find a long-term solution to the challenge.
The process of installing trusses is another critical component of the warehouse’s framework. Brown Engineering, a key contractor for the project, has been instrumental in the early stages. The local manufacturing company has expertly fabricated these trusses, as well as taking on the rigging responsibilities.
The project encompasses four distinct buildings, each showcasing Brown Engineering’s engineering prowess. The main storage warehouse measures 138 meters by 30 meters, while the maintenance warehouse is slightly smaller at 102 meters by 20 meters. The administrative building is 48 meters by 18 meters, and the canteen is approximately 44 meters by 18 meters.
The main storage warehouse was meticulously marked, setting the stage for the structural construction to commence. The steelworks involved pouring concrete blinding to create a solid base for the foundation steel.
This foundation steel is strategically placed to ensure that the structural loading is evenly distributed to the ground.
The team then proceeded to set the steel reinforcement for the basements, including stutter piles for the step columns that will support the structural steel above.
After this stage, concrete bases were poured to a specified depth of 400mm. The step columns, which are crucial for holding the structural steel, were then prepared with meticulous precision to ensure the building’s structural integrity.
The structural steel itself was prefabricated at Brown Engineering and brought to the site for installation.
To secure the prefabricated steel, bolts were set in place,
the structural steel could be installed without any problems.
The foundation used 30 MPa concrete to securely hold the structural steel, but the specific concrete strength may vary depending on the building’s size and weight. Engineers carefully design the foundation to accommodate the structural loading and ensure its long-term durability.
As of the time of this publication’s visit, the construction team was working towards reaching the fifth-placing beam, which is the centre of the storage warehouse. This will allow them to start superstructure works from the back while simultaneously completing the front section. requiring precise linear measurements and diagonal accuracy to the millimetre. This attention to detail is
essential for ensuring the structural integrity of the entire building. Once the bolts were accurately set,
The process involves further erecting steel columns, bracing, compression bars, compression beams, and trusses. Before finalizing the bracing, the team carefully checks the levels to ensure accuracy.
With this massive project, Brown Engineering is once again showcasing its huge capacity to help transform the infrastructural landscape of Zimbabwe, one project at a time. And they are doing it in style!

B D Stodart Machinery, a key sub-contractor involved in the Rooneys Hire Services warehouse project, has been instrumental in preparing the site for subsequent construction phases. Their scope of work primarily involves earthworks and sewer installation, ensuring the ground is adequately prepared for other contractors.
The company commenced operations on August 5th, beginning with a thorough topography survey to assess the site’s contours and determine the necessary excavation and filling requirements. This initial step provided valuable insights into the project’s scale and complexity.
Following the survey, B D Stodart Machinery embarked on the extensive task of removing topsoil, a material that is less suitable for compaction and load-bearing purposes. This process involved hauling out approximately 4,000 cubic meters of waste material.
To optimize material usage and minimize costs, the team strategically cut material from the higher end of the site and filled lower areas.
This careful balancing act ensured that the site’s levels aligned with the project’s design requirements.
Throughout the filling process, meticulous attention was paid to compaction, a critical aspect of ensuring
the ground’s stability.
B D Stodart Machinery employed a 12.5-tonne roller, carefully compressing the fill in layers to achieve the desired density.
Once the earthworks were completed to the necessary level, the main contractor, Kalamain, could proceed
with the structural works.
Stodart Machinery then shifted their focus to another platform, continuing their earthworks until reaching the top layer.

by the site’s gradient.
The team had to carefully balance cuts and fills to achieve the required platform levels while minimizing material imports

Known for their expertise in steel-framed industrial and commercial structures, Superstructures is approaching this project with their signature commitment to quality and efficiency. The project spans an impressive square-area, requiring a robust foundation to support the substantial steel structure. To ensure a stable base, the superstructure is being built upon a reinforced concrete foundation. Given the waterlogged area, flood seams were implemented, and ground beams of varying depths were utilized to address the specific challenges of the site.
The steel structure, the building’s backbone, was prefabricated off-site by Superstructures and then assembled on-site. Using specialized equipment, the steel beams, columns, and trusses were precisely lifted and connected.
The company also fabricated the frames and structured all the seams. Steel structures offer numerous benefits, such as exceptional strength, durability, and the ability to span large distances.
After the steel structure was installed, the brick walls were constructed. The bricks were laid in mortar and reinforced with steel bars, creating load-bearing walls that contribute significantly to the building’s structural integrity.
Superstructures’ involvement in this project further underscores their position as a leading engineering firm in Zimbabwe.
Their expertise in steel construction is clearly demonstrated by the meticulous execution of this expansion project.
A critical component of the warehouse’s structural framework, the trusses and girders, were expertly manufactured and installed by Superstructures and transported to the site for installation.
Precise positioning and securement of these trusses were essential for the building’s stability. Bolts were set in place to secure the prefabricated steel, requiring precise linear and diagonal measurements to the millimeter. This attention to detail is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the entire building.
The team also installed steel reinforcement for the basements, including stutter piles for the step columns that support the upper structural steel. Concrete bases were poured, and the step columns were meticulously prepared to ensure the building’s structural integrity.
Kobot is is paving way with all the Kilsud Builders is handling the brickwork, while Pile Africa is responsible for the foundation piles. These companies were some of the additional subcontractors involved in the project.
The Greendale area is experiencing a revitalization, with commercial property developers establishing new businesses and upgrading existing operations.

Progress and highlights
Construction of the Rank Wholesalers warehouse commenced in June, starting with the foundation work. The project is scheduled to be completed by November 1, 2024, allowing the owner to lease the facility to tenants thereafter.
The warehouse shed occupies a total area of 5,651 square meters and comprises of six units.
To ensure a stable foundation, reinforced concrete was used. The building features a specialized foundation with reinforced bases and ground beams. To address the challenges posed by the waterlogged site, flood channels were implemented, and ground beams of varying depths were employed.
The steel framework for the warehouse was prefabricated off-site by Brown Engineering and then assembled on the construction site.
This process involved lifting and connecting steel beams, columns, and trusses using cranes and specialized equipment. Brown Engineering also fabricated and installed the frames and structural joints. The steel structure offers exceptional strength, durability, and a wide span capability.
Once the steel framework was in place, brick walls were constructed using mortar and reinforced steel bars. These walls are load-bearing, supporting the roof and other structural elements.
Throughout the construction process, Brown Engineering implemented stringent safety measures to protect workers and prevent accidents. As a matter of adherence, the warehouse is also being built in compliance with building codes and regulations to ensure its Structural
integrity and safety.

A closer look at the construction process
During a visit to the construction site by the Structure and Design Magazine team, roofing work had been completed. The installation of trusses, a critical component of the warehouse's structural framework, was carried out by Brown Engineering. The trusses were expertly fabricated and installed by the local manufacturing company ensuring precise positioning and securement.
Brown Engineering's steelworks involved pouring a concrete blinding layer to create a solid foundation for the structural steel. This foundation steel is strategically placed to evenly distribute structural loads to the ground.
The team then proceeded to install steel reinforcement for the basements, including stutter piles for the step columns that support the upper structural steel. Concrete bases were poured, and the step columns were meticulously prepared to ensure the building's structural integrity.
The structural steel components were prefabricated at Brown Engineering and transported to the site for installation. Bolts were set in place to secure the prefabricated steel, requiring precise linear and diagonal measurements to the millimeter. This meticulous attention to detail is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the entire building.

This expansion made room for two full-sized hockey or soccer pitches facing east-west and an athletic track.The astroturf field has also contributed to the overall development of the Chisipite Senior School campus. The construction project was completed to exacting international standards, ensuring that the facility meets the highest quality requirements.

We have built something that commemorates Chisipite’s storied past, celebrates its platinum jubilee present, and looks ahead to its promising future,” Dr. Reilly said. Chisipite Senior School opened its doors in 1954 with two members of staff and forty-eight pupils.
