very city has its secrets, but close to Rome’s most famous attractions lie subterranean archaeological sites that many tourists are unaware of. In this issue, we take you deep beneath the Eternal City to a world of atmospheric passages, ancient homes, beautiful frescoes and carvings, and remarkable catacombs. Back above ground, but still hidden from view from most visitors, are the shikumen, or stone-gated terraced houses of Shanghai. We explore these fascinating communities that offer a glimpse of a fastdisappearing way of life. In Toronto, two of the city’s leading interior designers, George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, open their little black books for us, offering their insight into the city’s best restaurants, cafés, bars and shops.

It’s no secret that the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens takes place this month, and we chat to the captain of the Hong Kong Sevens rugby team, Rowan Varty, about how to make the best of this thrilling three-day spectacle, whether or not you have tickets to the matches. In winning the Mumbai Sevens, thanks to a 28-7 victory, Hong Kong claimed the title of Asian champions for the first time. With that came a place in the main competition at this month’s Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. It was the culmination of four years of hard work under the watchful eye of Rees, a man schooled on the battlegrounds of Welsh national rugby. “We had lost to Japan many times, so it really was satisfying for the whole squad to get one back on them in Mumbai,” says Rees. “Over the past four years, we have had a core group of eight players and we have grown as a group. Coming into Mumbai, we had already won in Shanghai so we knew it was winner takes all, and we took it all.” Winning their first HSBC Asian Sevens Series, though, was just part of Hong Kong’s 2012 success story. The events of the past 12 months have set 2013 up to be a season like no other. A top-three finish at November’s HSBC Asian Sevens Series tournament in Singapore – a world cup qualifying event – ensured Hong Kong a spot at this year’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow in June. Before that, in May, Hong Kong will be playing for a place as one of the HSBC Sevens World Series’ 15 teams when they take to the pitch in the Marriott London Sevens for the first time. Looming on the horizon, for Hong Kong and for every nation involved in the game, is also perhaps the greatest sporting challenge of them all – the rugby sevens debut at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a point not lost on Rees.

“As Asian champions, we can come out in front of the home crowd at the Hong Kong Sevens and play against the top teams, and that is something that everyone can be excited about,” he says. “On top of that we’ve shown that, with a small group of players, we can compete to an Olympic standard, and that goal is there for us all.” Rugby sevens’ place at the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Sha Tin also seems assured. The Mumbai victory followed on from silver medals at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong. These successes are expected to be enough for the government to support it as one of the city’s “elite” sports from April this year. Sevens players have been previously rewarded for their efforts at the Asian and East Asian Games with funding under the Individual Athletes Support Scheme. The sport’s admission to the expansive academy in Sha Tin, though, will mean an injection of millions of dollars of support, with players in line to receive as much as HK$30,000 a month. This means some of them might well decide to become full-time athletes. “With the support of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, as well as sponsors such as Cathay Pacific, we’ve been able to build up a sense of professionalism around 22 DISCOVERY March 2013

A packed house of 40,000 saw the home side reduced to six men against Japan – something that had happened to them both at the 2010 Asian Games gold-medal match and last year’s Borneo Sevens final – resulting in a 10-5 defeat in the qualifying tournament quarter-finals. Alvin Sallay has been reporting on rugby in Hong Kong for more than 20 years. He believes the victory in Mumbai shows how far the squad has come. “That game against Japan in Mumbai proved Hong Kong had learned their lessons and they produced a fine performance,” says Sallay. “Another difference was the squad’s fitness. The past year has shown the value of the work of Dai and his team.” Sallay also praises the new generation of sevens players, led by full-back/winger Alex McQueen and his brother and fellow winger Tom, and back Kwok Kachun. “The squad really has improved and the results speak for themselves,” he says.

去年香港國際七人欖球賽的失望賽果似乎已被淡忘。當時四萬球迷看著香港隊只剩下六人與日本隊對壘（同樣情況也出現在 2010亞運金牌賽及去年七人欖球賽婆羅洲站賽事），在八強淘汰賽中以 5比 10落敗出局。在香港報道了欖球賽事逾 20年的 A l vi n S a l l ay指出，港隊在孟買奪冠，展現球隊在戴里斯領導下發揮潛力。 S a l l ay說：「在孟買出戰日本隊的比賽，證明港隊已汲取了教訓，表現出紀律精神。另一明顯分別是球員的體能和狀態，反映過去一年戴里斯和球隊付出的努力。」 S a l l ay又指出，香港已培養出新一代的七人欖球隊員，當中包括 Mc Q u e e n 兄弟，哥哥 A l e x 任後衛及翼鋒，弟弟 To m則是翼鋒，還有後衛郭嘉進等。「香港隊整體實力有了很大的進步，近期賽事的佳績就是最好的證明。」戴里斯對此表示認同：「未來的一年是球員和教練的良機，而一切將從香港國際七人欖球賽開始。」他說：「我們有一群在香港出生的球員，他們緊緊把握機會，在國際級賽事爭取好表現。」
