Welcome & Objectives

Welcome to Abu Dhabi, where ultra-modern architecture meets ancient heritage and the desert meets the sea. On behalf of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) Board of Directors, we welcome you to Sigma’s 34th International Nursing Research Congress.

The 2023 congress theme is Connect Nursing Globally Through Research and Evidence Dissemination, which you will see reflected in plenary sessions, the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame, and the hundreds of oral and poster presentations designed to make an impact on your professional and personal life.

Sigma’s congress provides a unique opportunity to exchange evidence-based information, learn, and connect with nursing colleagues from around the globe in a positive atmosphere of support and encouragement. While you are contributing to that positivity, we ask that you please be respectful of your colleagues and our hosts and exhibit cultural humility while in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and throughout your time here.

As we continue to reduce the size of printed material footprint, we encourage you to download and use our event app. The app allows you to build your own personal schedule, link to presentation materials, and access any last-minute updates. Visit the app store to download the app for Apple and Android devices.

Two great opportunities for networking and a taste of the Emirati culture are the Welcome Reception Thursday afternoon and the Cultural Event Sunday evening. The Cultural Event will feature a live band playing traditional music along with a variety of Middle Eastern food.

Enjoy your time in Abu Dhabi and remember to make some time to discover the sights, tastes, and hospitality of our host city and the Middle East. We look forward to sharing Sigma’s 34th International Nursing Research Congress with you.

Sincerely,

Support nursing research through the Sigma Foundation for Nursing

Support the Kenneth Dion President’s Circle and answer the organizational call to action to Be Bold. Make two donations this biennium and you will be recognized in his President’s Circle. To learn more, visit the Foundation table or donate at SigmaNursing.org/Donate.

Grant Recipient Testimonials

“This research will provide the first steps to the theoretical constructions and start an epistemological dialog from the Global-South to the Global-North. The essence of being a nurse in Latin America will be described and theoretical postulates to overcome language barriers in theoretical development and promote the advancement and growth of the core disciplinary nursing knowledge.”

“This study will provide critical data needed to design culturally appropriate physical activity (PA) interventions for middle-aged US South Asian Indian (SAI) women at risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The data gathered will contribute to the national goals of reducing health disparities among minority groups and chronic conditions that affect the health of individuals, families, and communities by informing the future development and testing of interventions to promote PA among middle-aged US SAI women at risk for T2D. The overall goal of this study is to promote health and reduce mortality and the health disparities related to T2D. The proposed research is innovative because it seeks to understand new, relevant knowledge regarding cultural factors that promote and/or hinder PA in this socially vulnerable, underserved, highly understudied minority population with a qualitative approach using the Theory of Planned Behavior to design focus group discussion. This is critical for informing the development of effective PA interventions to reduce the risk of chronic health conditions by understanding the factors that influence the SAI women’s participation in PA.”
