Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols?

Zeara Polo discusses the diagram as having ‘abilities to describe relationships and prescribe performance of space and its relation of processing matter’. Therefore, according to the author the diagram is an instrument in displaying and understanding spacialising information. For example, it may be a diagram of how to move precisely through space. Signs and Symbols, however, have no correlation between form and meaning and relies on associative techniques rather than depicting precise relationships.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Top RIght; Unfolded origami model Top Left; Folded origami model Bottom Right; Dimensions added to the model Right Photo; Unknown, Serpentine Gallery. 2001, photograph, accessed 17/03/19, https://libeskind. com/publishing/serpentine-gallery/

The structure was established on the idea of an origami figure. This produced an angular pavilion that continuously raps over itself creating a spiral aesthetic. I began the modelling process with the unfolded model. I then proceeded to rotate and angle these pieces to reflect the elevations and sections. Dimensions were then added to the model.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use.

Herberger throughout the text discuses the ‘in between’ as a threshold that provides a special condition in which there is a meeting of interior and exterior spaces. This correlated directly to Serpentine Pavilion as Leberskin is continually exploring this ‘in between’ space by crating areas that merge with the exterior and interior of the space. Herberger also discusses the habitable space between things, in which he implores designers to produce a space that is receptable to different situations. This related to Leberskin’s pavilion as it is a very versatile space. The structure functions as a lecture theatre, cafe and gallery party venue.

Week Two

Isometric

Leberskin’s Serpentine Pavilion I struggled throughout the modelling process, as I found it a very difficult to visualise from the provided unfolded origami model. To assist me in this process I made a small paper model which assisted me greatly in fully comprehending hoe the structure seems to wrap over itself. From this I digitally produced the model using predominantly rotate3D command. Once the model was completed I decided to incorporate the directions of the aluminium panels as they are very unique and distinguishable to Leberskin’s work. The modelling process allowed m to see how the slated walls and roofs seems to govern how people moved within the pace. Through this exercise I also was able to see the differences between the exterior and interior and how Leberskin blurs these lines creating an ‘in between’ space.

This diagram describes how the walls of the structure influence ones path; the angles almost directing someone through the space.

This diagram explores how Leberskin blurs the thresholds of interior and exterior to crate an ‘in between space’.
