WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinder, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. A cylinder surface is formed by a series of parallel lines which can curve to produce a 3D model of a cylinder. A cone can form both smooth shapes with a vertex or a pyramid. Tangent surfaces of space curves are made up by a series of polygons. There are all ruled surfaces where the tangent plane is always tangent to the surfacing along the page and rulings are not limited to single point.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) We must understand the developable suface in order to understand architectural geometry as the series of lines on a developable surface can be read and folded into a 3D model. These straight lines can also be read ad translated into shapes which is important to communicate a certain design. As seen in the stage set for John Jaspere, the lines are translated into a flexible and understandable pattern through the use of lines.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is the use of computer-aided design technologies/applications as modes of representation and contractions. This process calibrates between virtual models and physical artefact and aims to narrow the gap between representation and building, so that a “hypothetically seamless connection is established between design and making. Digital fabriction has made two-dementional representation more efficient, easier to edit, and simpler to learn. Nevertheless, throughit changed the form of drawings from being analog to digital, the fundamental nature of two-dementional representation remained the same.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) 1. In the diversity of contemporary design method, folded as a form of language, a frequent and positive role in the space of the building, structure, organization. 2. Folding expands the three-dementional vobaculatry surface in a straight-forward way, through naturally producing deformation and inflection in the material.
