After setting up a photo stage, one photo of plan view and two elevation views of my croissant should be taken. It is important to make sure that the camera is at the same level as my croissant. At the same time, the bottom plan view of the croissant shall be scanned by using the scanner. After the above processes are completed, use photoshop to arrange all the pictures into an A3 paper. (as shown in the figure1)

Orthographic drawing is one of the important part of this module. In this part, it is required to overlay tracing paper over my top view and apply hatching to show depth and use 0.15 fine line pen to make hatches. 0.4 pen should be used to outline the cut line. While drawing the two elevations, 2B and 4B pencil shall be used to show depth. (as shown in the figure2) For me, drawing is not an easy task, especially using the pens. From my perspective, the detail is which I should pay attention to. As my tutor taught me, use tiny lines to show the depth bit by bit. In addition, the density of the lines can be used to show the depth of the shadow.

5

After cutting the croissant into four parts, three sections should be scanned by using scanner. (as shown in the figure3) Drawing the three sections is also needed in this module. Method is similar to drawing the plan view and elevations, which is overlaying tracing paper over the three sections and use 0.15 fine line pen to trace the section profile, and then 4B and 6B pencils used to show depth. Finally, 0.4 pen used to make the cut line apparent. 6

For the axonometric projection, determine the intersection points of the three sections line with 10*10 mm grid. Along the plan view profile, project a set of 10mm intervals vertically. The above marked intersection is then transferred into plan to construct axonometric projection. One thing to note is that the plan should be rotated 45 degrees. (as shown in the figure5) 7

8

With the axonometric workspace set up, the first 2d elevation template should be forwarded at 45-degree angle, using A3 tracing paper overlaid on the template. This step ensures that the width of the object in my projection is consistent with the original picture. After that, draw a square of 20cm*20cm on A3 paper. Put the square and the picture in a certain distance. Then extend the height of the object to determine the width of the object. In the original painting given, the distance between objects can be determined by the depth of the object’s color. Based on that, the distance between objects can be dealt with well.

Illustrator shall be used to trace the outline first, and then color the object based on the original picture. The most important thing is to distinguish between lightness and darkness. What’s more, the effect of the light on the objects should be considered, too. Texture is also very useful to make the object more natural. For example, I added some texture on the wall, and adjust the transparence to make the walls look more real. On the mountain I also added some dots.

Before the final work of module three, I have tried several types of single model to try to find a satisfied one. As many kinds of shapes as I can created have been tried, finding they are all messy.

13

At last, I decided to design a basic model, and the other models are changed from the basic one. As shown in the picture, the basic one is a normal pyramid, and the other models look like exploded pyramid.

Using rhino to build the basic old quad in order to put character in the following steps.

perspective view

19

The first perspective view is in the morning. According to the story I chose, Marco Polo first described the trade scene in OEuphemia. I think most of the trade between businessmen happens in the early morning. Businessmen carrying their own goods from far area, arrived early in the trade market. This is what my first perspective view wants to express. The story also mentions that businessmen from seven countries sailed here, so characters in the first perspective view will be dressed in different costumes. Then set the background as a coastal market. Also use the illustrator to blur the background in order to distinguish it from the character.Â

The second perspective view is in the later afternoon. Marco Polo described the scene that people sitting together around a campfire after the sky was darker. So, I added a bonfire and some flame characters in the second perspective view to make the scene warmer.

In general, in the story I chose, Marco Polo described a common daily but warm scene. For me, what I want to create is an idealized scenario based on the Marco Polo’s description. What I mean is in my scenes there will be people from different classes and with different identities appear in the same scenes. In the persevere view that I created, there is no class distinction and no race. Everyone is enjoying their own life. This is also the lifestyle that I yearn for, and this is also the reason why I chose this story.

21

As the beginning of the story puts it, proceeding eighty miles into the northwest wind, you reach the city of Euphemia. So, the beginning of the movement was set in the southeast corner. Besides, because Marco Polo described the scene with a long-time span, and the scene changes greatly. I chose a longer distance for the movement. At the same time, the main characters were set in the northwest corner and southeast corner.

In general, Foundation of Design: Representation is a very interesting lesson for me. During the first semester, I learned a lot of skills, especially the use of software such as Photoshop, illustrator, and rhino. Before I learned this course, I had very little contact with the software. Painting is also a very important part of the semester, especially in module1 and module2. To be honest, I’m not very good at painting. However, after this semester of study, I also learned some painting techniques. For example, use hatching and sketching to represent object details. Creativity is very important to a designer. What is even more crucial is how to express the creativity in the brain through physical objects. I think this course is guiding us to release our creativity to create more possibilities. During the course of this semester I also encountered some difficulties. Most of them come from unfamiliar with the use of various graphics software. In the next study of architectural design, I will focus on the understanding and application of software.
