WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) The rules established by Durer when it comes to perspectival projection are: 1.)All perpendicular or orthogonal lines meet at a central vanishing point (determined by the perpendicular drawn from the eye to the picture plane). 2.)All parallels should have a common vanishing point no matter what direction they lie. If it lies on a horizontal plane than the vanishing point should lie on that horizontal line. 3.)The equal dimensions progressively get smaller as they move further into space - this is so any portion of picture is calculable (if the location of the observing eye is known).

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is unchanging and infinite. It is the central perspective, a vision that is seen by a single and immobile eye. A point in a homogenous space is a mere determination of position, holding nothing that is unique to them outside of this context. Every point in a homogenous space should be a plausible distinction of similar figures from every magnitude or direction.

Throughout this module, I stuck with the basic structure of the old quad building, in order to add something interesting and relevant my world I included balcony railings at the side.

The nototations were meant to represent what Marco Polo was observing in the city of Andria. Sensory icons were used to give viewers an experience of what it feels like to be in certain parts of the city. Having the icons help to set a narrative to the world, the quiet sacred study area where astronomers gather and the bustling city life where traders gather.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective one ‘among the stars’ I wanted to highlight the centrality and how it is a space for scholars and people of knowledge to study the stars and universe. This scene was meant to represent the ‘night’ part of the city.

Perspective two, ‘peaceful city’ is a scene that shows the transtion from night to day. It is meant to show the right side from Marco Polo’s point of view. For this scene I aim to show the differences between the bustling city life and the productive industry to the quiet serene atmosphere in perspective 1.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

In Andria Marco Polo described it as a city that was strongly associated with the celestial heavens and the sky. He also mentions about astronomers who would stare into their telescope to discover what has caused a change in their city. Sky and city correlates one another in this city. Objects such as telescopes, armillary sphere and notes on constellations were included in this scene to highlight the role of the astronomers and their impact on the city.

For perspective 2, I wanted to give the audience a peek into the civic life of the citizens of Andria. Showing more discussion and liveliness and ‘life’ into the scene. Marco Polo descirbed that citizens of Andria calculate the risks and advantage before making a decision. I had people of Andria interacting with one another to suggest that they are ‘discussing’ about the decisions on how to improve Andria as a city. Cogs on the walls were use to symbolise this idea of ‘order’ and the importance of maintaining balance to the city.

WEEK 10 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic and allographic are two kinds of art forms. Autographic is associated to arts such as sculpture and paintings where its authenticity depends on direct contact with the author. On the other hand allographic is linked to poetry, music and theatre which can be produced in many copies. Its authenticity it not determined by having direct contact with the author rather it can be worked at from a ‘distance’ through notation. Allographic does not imitate something that already exists, instead it creates different variations, new realities through notation.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) A new representational technique is required because as time passes cities start to change, form and layouts become unpredictable. ‘Modern’ cities have evolved to the point where structure is lost and is no longer coherent or predictable, arising problems for architects in terms of how they can represent this complexity. Urban sites are no longer just geographical due to the beginning of information technology and social changes, therefore architects have to go beyond the ‘image’ and figure out a solution to represent the unmappable territory. Traditionally, representation involved stable objects and fixed subject, something that cannot relate to current contemporary cities. Cities now have interlinking complex relationship between subjects, arising new tools of representation and diagrams for architects to use in order to work with the contemporary cities.

There are also speech bubble symbols to represent the discussions and conversations in perspecctive 2. The circular celestial city ‘calander ‘ was meant to enforce the circular threshold from the isometric drawing as well as the idea of a planet’s orbit which Marco first described when he was in Andria.
